  1. Traditionally... not all matches are #1 vs. #2 or they are those rankings on paper and find out otherwise as time goes on.
  2. Having coached at Midlands for one of those smaller schools, I can tell you that Cyzewski, and Kraft before him, limit the amount of non-D1 entrants/programs to the tournament. The most we ever had was two. As you may know, student-athletes don't dictate team schedules. For the smaller programs, as you call them, that is an added expense to take one to two guys and coaches to said tournaments that can be 700-plus miles away, in some of the cases we are talking about here. Good luck getting your administration to sign off on something like that. As someone who has been in charge of scheduling and budget for one of those smaller schools, I can tell you personally that those conversations do not go far and end pretty quickly.
  3. I am confused why you think Abney "wouldn't compete". Is it because you say so or do you have data to show otherwise? Same with Blubaugh. Streck is a past D1 National Qualifier, and I would feel comfortable saying that he is better now than he was when he qualified. If you're going off WrestleStat for Burks' (I misspelled his name the first time) stats, they're far from complete. Vasbinder "more dominant of a D2 champ" than Abney? We must not agree on the definition of dominant. Not being g listed on the roster in the current semester doesn't mean he is out of the sport. He placed seventh at Worlds this year, and went 6-6 with Uguev at the Olympics in 2021.
  4. Abney and Streck from Central Oklahoma Burkes at Central Missouri Blubaugh from Indianapolis Abdullaev from Menlo One to two others might hang. That being said, yes, there is a sizeable drop-off from Division to division, but that doesn't mean that ALL non-D1 guys are scrubs.
  5. I think it would be great to have some non-D1 guys out there competing at this event. There are a few handfuls who can go toe to toe with the D1ers. Missed opportunity here for NWCA.
  6. Letting Ramos go right now would be a bad move, as he has extremely close ties to one of the best youth/high school clubs/coaches in the country, who happens to have founded a league of elite clubs form coast to coast. Tony will have greater access to more of those recruits than most coaches. Koll didn't get where he is today, making what he makes today, by luck.
  7. And yet the American wrestling' community is fighting the idea of moving the college version to a one semester (spring) sport and finding a solution for the gap between 197 and 285... crazy, man! Craaaaaa-zyyyyy.
  8. My guess is that the academic advisors at SU spoke with him about his long-tearm intentions and gave him the pathway that suited his goals. Add to that alumni base of Stanford and he is going to be just fine, regardless of his chosen major. That said, his major doesn't appear to be a "softer major" - https://sts.stanford.edu/.
  9. Koll has always been very clear on to which coaches wrestlers attached themselves. He has long stated that so-and-so "is a Damian Hahn guy" or so-and-so "is a Mike Grey guy." To his credit, he knows why the student-wrestlers are there.
  10. Didn't Shane Griffith do the same thing? I may be wrong, but I thought I had heard that.
  11. Koll was living on campus in the house that the former sailing coach had lived in while employed with the university.
  12. 1,000,000% accurate https://gostanford.com/sports/2013/4/17/208451665 - the end of the third paragraph addresses this... and it looks like they're struggling to do so.
  13. Coach Spree has really put Indian Hills on the map, and knows how to develop student-wrestlers. Their 125 from last year was another Michigander (Lakeshore) who earned seventh place at Nationals this past season. This young man landed in a good place for himself right now. That said, I was just having this conversation with another poster: it's pretty rare for D1s to recruit from NJCAAs anymore. Most kids have their grades squared away ahead of time, especially once they identify where they want to go. Spending five years at a four year school is what most folks want, as well as the coaches who are recruiting the. That said, this approach has had a direct impact upon the depth of NJCAAs, and it's not like it was up until the early 2000s.
  14. I do not know that, but I have to imagine that the lure of becoming a head coach of a(n eventual) D1 program is appealing to a young coach.
  15. Grant has his work cutout for him. That is not an easy way to start attracting D1 talent, unless they have a VERY defined timeline towards making that happen.
  16. His ability, in my opinion, deserves recognition. His character, on the other hand, well...

  18. https://www.missouriwrestling.com/unexpected-takedown-mario-quezada-and-the-william-jewell-wrestling-programs-abrupt-end/ Looks like almost the entire team is in the portal, too. Word on the street is that those who are in the portal plan to transfer at semester.
  19. According to the UWW database, he finished 9th. He did go 2-1 at the tournament (beating the Armenian 11-1 and the Pole 8-2), but lost 13-0 in the round of 16 to a German with a Russian last name.
  20. I hope BDJr does compete at OTT. He finished top 10 at World's in 2019, so why not? As to his character, he isn't exactly being lead well in that department.
