  1. Yes. They kept his redshirt on after his loss to a well-coached Trepham.
  2. Also "Cael knows what he's doing" (for sure.) It just might not involved Robbie Howard, whom has already retired once.
  3. There was a lot going on there: Joe Russell's injury keeping Dan at home, the ability to still wrestle in D1 for D2 guys, a very strong local wrestling culture and a nearby university... a perfect storm. It is unlikely we would see anything similar today.
  4. It actually was close. Having a grip on someone's leg does not prevent you from being taken down or even pinned. There is a picture in the high school rulebook (rule 5-25-1) that illustrates this. Feldman had Catka's leg hooked. He just needed to get his own right knee on the mat beyond reaction time from what I remember. http://owoa.org/pdf files/2016-17RuleBookIillustrations.pdf
  5. Was a fair to middling wrestler on a top 10 D2 team. It was late 80s to early 90s and we actually had D1 national qualifiers. I beat d1 starters and lost to d3 backups lol. I'm not sure if the difference in talent between divisions was as pronounced back then. I wrestled some Greco, made a decent account of myself against some highly ranked guys. Came out of retirement at an open when I was 33. Took 2nd out of 20 ish. Beat some college guys, lost 4-0 to a pretty decent post-collegian. Was whole body sore for over a week AND got staph!
  6. I agree. My favorite episode might be the one entirely focused on Real Woods transferring to Iowa after allegedly receiving an offer to go to PSU. Basch sounded angry and disgusted. I'm pretty sure Cenzo's voice cracked a couple times, as he was coaching Stanford. Real had already graduated from Stanford and was offered a "bag." Then the story shifted and PSU was supposedly never in the running. Strangely there were never any similar shows angry about Kerk, Truax, Max Dean, Nagao, etc. This is part of the reason why I would think Basch is what Brands calls a "paid hater" and Mineo isn't even on his radar.
  7. I actually heard him tell the story at a clinic in the mid 90s. Both he and Burnett were there, and I lost track of which one said it. Thanks for the reminder, and also the info on the book. I have very good memories of Greg Strobel. When I was coaching high school, my kids used to always go to the Lehigh camp. He took a personal interest in a couple of them. I also used to email him with questions about technique and strategy and he would always respond. Great dude. I'm going to try to find a copy of that book.
  8. Would he be allowed to get an NIL contract and still be employed by WWE? They are extremely protective of merchandising their entertainer name, image, and likenesses. I'm not even sure if full time WWE "athletes' are allowed to manage their own social media.
  9. Squirming is something I definitely look at. Bottom guy legit squirming? He is not stalling. If the top guy is "legit working power halves" but staying on the squirming man's hips and still nothing is happening, I'll give him a little bit of time. After a while it is going to be a stalemate. If the same situation is happening with no scoring, it will probably be stalling on the top guy eventually. I probably give the top man more time than most refs in my area, but at some point he needs to get a turn or get to a new position.
  10. The Hawks are my #2 team, but I won't be overly upset with whatever decision is made. They knew the rules, they messed around... now they pay the price. On the other hand, it looks like the exact thing these guys were doing may well be legal going forward. Someone likened that to keeping marijuana offenders (not dealer level) in state prisons after marijuana was decriminalized in those states.
  11. How long before someone makes a joke on this thread that starts "I bet....."?
  12. It was either Burnett or Strobel who told this story: Basically, in 96, Bruce was pretty upset after not making the finals. I'm sure he was disappointed, hurt, beat up, tired. He initially wasn't going to wrestle for bronze. The coaches were able to convince him that "you already have Olympic gold and silver. Why not get a bronze and complete the set?" Which he did.
  13. When is Basch going to rid of Cenzo from his logo? Cenzo is on that show about as much as Steveson is on WWE!
  14. WCML has had Zain, Reader, and Gibbons on in recent weeks. He does seem to have been putting fewer episodes out lately.
  15. I'm pretty sure medalists are eligible for ORS, but not sure if this includes medalists from the last cycle. Remember discussion as to whether Nagao would ORS at PSU? They were put to rest with "No, that's only for medalists... Nagao placed 5th"
  16. Thanks, but somewhat unfair because a number of those wrestlers haven't been able to compete in Worlds at 65.
  17. "Wrestling Changed My Life" is pretty solid without the homerism and without the religion. (and I am fairly religious, but I understand that some find Basch fairly annoying on this)
  18. Good year for some Olympic shirts. Most of those guys are eligible except for Wyatt (USAFA). (Cass obviously needs reinstatement and does Elam's World junior medal from 2018 count for this cycle?)
