  1. regarding Pat Smith, just as he was the 1st to win 4 NCAA titles, it was also not as common in his era for guys to win 4 HS titles. It was getting more common by then, but still not like now, and if you go back 5-10 years from there it was still a pretty big deal. Funny I had thought of posting about guys who won more NCAA titles than HS state championships. Some recent discussion on Jim Zalesky made me think about when I looked up his bio. 2 time HS champ in Iowa, 3 time NCAA champ at Iowa with a much better overall record in college than HS
  2. impressive but not 55 points
  3. I remember Varnish. Also remember a lot of debate over Hodge the year Jayson Ness won it and Varner was 2nd in vote.
  4. Fwiw Lee Kemp’s wiki page says he retired after being runner-up in the ‘84 Olympic Trials. I’ve not found anything yet that mentions Jimmy Z being runner-up in trials on any occasion. In ‘80 he would have been pretty young to be a contender, ‘84 again was apparently Kemp, ‘88 pretty sure Dave Schultz was runner-up to Kenny Monday. Not sure who Monday beat in ‘92 and ‘96. agree with all you’ve said in terms of Kemp’s great career being somewhat overlooked due to lack of Olympic Gold.
  5. What happens to Duke, Wake Forest, Syracuse and BC?
  6. Marcus LeVesseur at D3 Augsburg excelled in both sports
  7. Thought Schultz beat Lee Kemp to make the Olympic team.
  8. for sure, that should be taken into consideration. Took a quick look I think there were 15 AAs that year from programs that have since been lost, plus a couple AAs from lower division schools that no longer have the opportunity to also compete in the D1 tournament.
  9. in order of impact - PSU, Nebraska, Rutgers, Maryland. But even the 1983 teams in B1G, the traditional schools like tOSU, Michigan, Minnesota, etc., were not exactly killing it then. Heck JRob was still on staff at Iowa, Minny was not very good back then.
  10. I wish the Princeton alum had also noted John Orr as a two time finalist instead of only in '85.
  11. has it been since Mocco and Perry? edit - was typing and did not see post above asking same
  12. Not diminishing the ‘83 team’s dominance but the B1G performance needs a little context. This is before Penn State and others had joined. Iowa was the only B1G team in top 10 at NCAA tournament that year. There were no NCAA finalists from the B1G besides Iowa wrestlers, and only 6 other AAs.
  13. 1997 Iowa NCAA tournament performance is up there with ‘83. 8 AAs, the 2 that did not place made blood round. 5 champs, a 2nd, 2 placed 6th (I think that’s right on those last 2). They were NOT nearly as dominant at B1G though. Jesse Whitmer who would win NCAA only took 4th and Joe Williams who also would win NCAA took 2nd. They also lost dual vs Ok St (Lincoln McIlravt was not in line-up that day). But the NCAA tournament performance was one of the best ever.
  14. Don’t know if he’s a target or not but agree that he hopefully does not leave Tech. And keep the other Sooner Brewer around Blacksburg too.
  15. Recall the year they had 3 champs, scored over 100 points, and finished 3rd under Abel. Crazy. Great teams back then.
  16. Was Aaron Hoelker their last AA before the drop?
  17. @scourge165 if you haven't already read it, try to find a copy of A Season On The Mat. It covers Gable's last year at Iowa so lots of Iowa guys that you and others have mentioned on this thread are in there. Good read.
  18. SJS def had on his track shoes for much of that match, but that duck under to win it in OT was awesome.
  19. I've got Davis and Metcalf on my 1st team posted earlier. Agree Iowa, and PSU, could both piece together very tough 2nd teams as well. Agreed he obviously suffers because of the senior year 7th place after the horrible injury. Note also the guys he beat in finals for the 2 he got - Azevedo was a 3 x finalist, 1 time champ; Burley a 4 time finalist, 2 time champ.
  20. Great group. Love to see Krieger, a career 150 in the 80s make 141 with a 1 hour weigh-in though. He’d be a 157 today.
  21. Pretty sure that’s correct. Transferred in after LSU dropped I think.
  22. Ironside was great and as a 134 should be considered for the new adjusted weight of 141. Except Tom Brands as a 3x champ at 134 should be the 141. so maybe.... 125 Lee 133 Barry Davis 141 Tom Brands 149 Metcalf 157 Lincoln 165 Zalesky 174 Joe Williams 184 Campbell or Alger 197 Ed Banach Hvy Lou Banach
