This was my first thought. You basically will have zero actual escapes at this point. You can simply release a guy who is about to get an escape. And even then it becomes yet another judgement call by the ref? That would make it even worse. The only way I can see this maybe working is by declaring you are releasing a guy before the start of the period when they take down or on the restart. But that just means guys can game the system who are up one point and aren't good at riding. Let's say they are up one point with ten seconds to go and there is a restart. Now they don't have to ride for ten seconds, they can opt for a no point release and run around the mat for ten seconds to win. It just makes no sense.

If you go back and watch you will see that he was 100% warned earlier in the match. He was called for PD in the first for the same thing. It’s why he was dinged a point later.

There is an illness in the room every time Spencer looks vulnerable or loses. I imagine he is on the precipice of his 4th mono infection. Iowa fans are the biggest snowflakes in all of sports. The reality is that Spencer is an all-time talent who has had too many major injuries. His knees are shot. And he is absolutely vulnerable after the first period. He is the Mike Tyson of Mike Tyson’s Punch Out! It’s almost impossible to get out of the first period against him but if you do your chances of beating him goes up drastically. His knee injuries are why I don’t think he will ever be a successful international guy. His knees are already done. It’s a shame because a healthy Spencer could win an Olympic gold. He’s that good.

Penn State has become a team that has been able to get their guys to close the gap on guys who beat them better than anyone. They have a history under Cael of losing a match to someone and then game planning and adjusting for the next time and winning. And outside of a rare occurrence once they overcome a guy they typically don’t let the guy beat them again. And when that does happen they are able to get one back when it counts the most.
