  2. Rank those returning champs from most to least likely to repeat! Note, last year's champs at 141, 157 and HWT graduated. 1. Spencer Lee - short of injury this is a LOCK and 3x Hodge. 2. Yianni - yes he lost to Gomez but that's not happening again. 3. O'Toole - the weight is stacked but this kid is a stud 4. RBY - he's beaten fix in the finals twice already, no reason to think he can't again 5. Starroci - Lewis is still out there but Carter has taken care of him 2x in a row now. 6. Brooks - typically he would be as high as 3 but already has a loss this season. 7. Max Dean - honestly should have lost before the finals last year and has lost several matches already this year
  3. Just a few short years ago Rutgers seemed to be a program on the upswing. They crowned their first 2 NCAA champs in Nicky Suriano and Anthony Ashnault, they were an above-average B10 program and on the verge of becoming a top 10 team nationally. What has happened since then though? They haven't been able to attract the same type of transfer talent and their primo recruits (e.g. Aragona and now Alvarez) have left the program. Rutgers seems to be trending downward back toward irrelevance. Is new coaching blood needed? Has Goodale lost his magic?
  4. Running away is a viable tactic if you can manage to score a few points and prevent your opponent from scoring more points than you - Wrestling John Madden.
  5. Spencer Lee is the best wrestler in NCAAs today. He is better than RBY. Even, I, as a Penn State homer, can admit that. However, this doesn't necessarily mean he beats RBY head to head. He might not even beat Real Woods or Yianni D, despite being so awesome. Even Kervliet might present Lee a challenge. There are weight classes for a reason.
  6. Hogwash. I've been told he would win titles from 125-149. Maybe even 157 (not no bonus in the finals).
  7. The Turk can be used to hurt an opponent's back, like a bow and arrow. It should be made illegal.
  8. Lee has lost more matches but has been much more dominant in terms of bonus point. Dake lost fewer matches but put up less bonus. He did take out David Taylor a bunch of times though and has an Olympic medal. Who is the better NCAA 4x Champ?
  9. According to Iowa fans Lee MAJORS RBY. Steen is a 118 pounder trying to wrestle 125. Iowa's backup would DEC Steen at minimum, maybe major. Lee absolutely should bump up as it will yield more team points. w/o Lee bumping up: 125 Iowa +6 133 Penn State +5 w/ Lee bumping up: 125 Iowa +4 133 Iowa +4 Net 8 points for Iowa w/ Lee bumping up versus net 1 point w/o Lee bumping up. That decides the match for Iowa right there.
  10. I give Iowa a 40% shot to win it all this year. Penn State is still the favorite I'd say 55% chance to win. 5% for the field. Why? 1. Lee is back and wrestling MEAN. He is going to bonus his way to title 4. I see at least 3 pins at NCAAs. 2. Woods is back and looking like he's going to win it all. Totally dominated a good NW wrestler. He will rack up big time bonus in March. 3. Siebrecht is looking like a AA contender at 157. 4. Kennedy is looking like a high AA contender at 165. 5. Warner has dropped a few matches but he turns it up big in March. 6. The demise of Tony Cass has been greatly exaggerated. He just beat Davison last night. 7. PSU will not qualify 125 for NCAAs. 8. SVN is a bit overrated imo. 9. Haines is also being overhyped. 10. 165 is a bit of a mystery with Facundo's health. 11. Dean could easily be upset in earlier rounds like he should have last year to Aiello, De Prez, etc. Again, PSU is the favorite but Iowa's performance last night showed it should not be a shocker if they take team title this March.
  11. My take: 125 Lee by FALL Iowa 6-0 133 RBY by MAJ Iowa 6-3 141: Woods by DEC Iowa 9-3 149: Murin by DEC Iowa 12-3 157: Haines by DEC Iowa 12-6 165: Kennedy by DEC 15-6 174: Starroci by MAJ 15-10 184: Brooks by MAJ 15-14 197: Warner by DEC 18-14 HWT: Kerk by DEC 18-17 Iowa wins 18-17 (This result is subject to Woods being healthy enough to wrestle, of course.)
  12. DeSanto in HS finals Ronnie Bresser Sebastian Rivera (twice I think) Nick Piccinnini (by fall) Forgot: Nate Tomasello Anyone else?
  13. He definitely has the personality to be in the WWE. They should market him as Razor Ramon, Jr.
  14. What does he say? And is he religious? I've never heard him do all the Jesus talk.
  15. Cocky, brash, haughty, pompous, boastful...who is it?
  16. Nah, no matter how much they call Cael Sanderson "Carl" or "Bael" they acknowledge that 159-0 with 4 NCAA titles beats Spencer. Lee, even if he wins his 4th, has lost multiple times in NCAA competition (3?), and been pinned by Piccinninininininini. That can't trump 159-0 even for the biggest Hawkeye Homer.
  17. No, I think Spencer Lee is the Iowa GOAT. I am responding to those other posters on this thread claiming it's Barry Davis or someone else instead.
  18. Spencer Lee is the GOAT according to Iowa fans. Put up a poll on Hawkeye report and list Barry David, Ed Banach, Lincoln McIlravy, whoever, against Spencer Lee and Lee will come out on top. Lee has his own dedicated tab on page on Iowa's official page...and he's still an active athlete. This is just short of erecting a lifesize 5'2 statue outside of Carver Hawkeye next to Gable's statue. I guarantee it. Call it recency bias if you want but as of 2023 Spencer Lee is considered the GOAT of Iowa Hawkeye wrestling.
  19. Would a third win over Lewis be enough to put Starocci in his own tier?
