  1. The big ten was really weak at 184 that year. Going into the postseason Brooks's best win was Abe Assad. He had also lost a match to Venz. At Big Tens he avenged the loss to Venz and was the 3 seed heading into NCAAs behind Lujan and Bolen. If PSU went to CKLV, Midlands, or Scuffle this likely wouldn't be an issue for Brooks or Messenbrink.
  2. Woods and Bartlett are set to meet in two weeks as are Brooks and Glazier in the same dual. Lovett and Gomez are similarly scheduled to wrestle in a fortnight. Bastida and Elam should face each other in the last dual of the season. Lewis and Starocci and Hendrickson and Kerkvliet have already wrestled each other this year.
  3. They discussed it, but the match they showed was Simmons vs Moldova from the World Championships. He says something about a scraplife shirt with that spladle on it and giving it to Velikov. Not 100% sure if the shirt had a pic of the spladle of Velikov from Ziolkowski or Chirtoaca from the world championships. I couldn't find a pic of the shirt in question... Probably don't make it any more. This webpage makes mention of the Velikov spladle and video take down. https://prommanow.com/2011/09/20/nick-simmons-lands-another-spladle-at-world-championships/ and here is the playlist of videos from the event on USAW's YouTube (lacking Simmons-Velikov) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL496A4C75002F58FF If I were Nick Simmons and I could have one just one spladle all over the internet I'd prefer it be the time I spladled for former world champ. I suppose one positive of Flo buying broadcast rights is that they wouldn't entertain a request to take down a match for something like this.
  4. The whole Larry, Lawrence, Zeke thing reminds me of Nate Bargatze's bit where the airline has his name as Nathan, his license says Nathaniel, and people call him Nate.
  5. The match is in the small gym. When Maryland first joined the Big Ten they held the big matches (Iowa, PSU, ect) in the basketball arena, but could never fill it even with all the PSU fans. This is the better option.
  6. Plus it never fit with the original premise. Can't really say Cael recruited over him when he's struggled to recruit a 125 that could even muster a winning record since Suriano left.
  7. I think it's a mistake to look at Taylor vs Bubba's overall career. The conflict only existed for a single season. Bubba only had on year left and Taylor only wrestled one year at 157. The obvious solution would be for Cael to keep Bubba happy at PSU and convince Taylor to move up a year earlier. In a recent interview (post olympics at least) Taylor has said he regretted not moving up in weight sooner. If Cael could have pulled it off it likely would have been a positive for both individuals and the team. In 2011 PSU was not the favorite to win NCAAs. They finished 14 points ahead of Cornell and without the contributions of mid-season Transfer Andrew Long (18.5 points) they probably would not have won. I doubt Pearsall would have been able to contribute the requisite 5 team points to overtake Cornell. Had they kept Bubba he scored 26 points at NCAAs that year (2nd most) and Taylor at 165 would have been an improvement over Vollrath, who did not qualify. If you take away the points scored by Long and Taylor and add Bubba's to PSUs total in 2011 they finish ahead of Cornell. PSUs best team in 2011 would have includes Long, Bubba at 157, and Taylor at 165 and they win NCAAs by 30. Beard is more debatable. I mostly included him because he defeated Dean last season. PSUs post NIL ability to pick up transfer AAs kind of negates the extra years Beard has available, but I suppose we will see. Suriano's name could also be included in this discussion, but Cael didn't really recruit over him and I doubt any program could have gotten 4 years out of him.
  8. That's true, but Iowa was ostensibly still recruiting them. At least after 11 of those 12 things and I wouldn't be shocked if he wrestles for them next season despite the Soldier Salute incident.
  9. Did anyone really expect Iowa fans to run a recruit out of town over a sexual assault allegation when their head coach had one of those back when he was a recruit? So long as Ferrari beat the charges the assault wouldn't be the thing that keeps him off the mats in Iowa City.
  10. It would be at least the third such mistake of Cael's tenure. First Bubba J. then Beard. I think his judgement was good here.
  11. Discussion on the college forum about wrestlers dodging opponents during the regular season and coaches using this not to prevent a loss for seeding but rather as a method of keeping information from potential future competitors, reminded me of the match between Nick Simmons and Radoslav Velikov from the 2011 Ziolkowski tournament. Velikov, a Bulgarian, was world champion in 2006 and Nick Simmons had recently made his first world team. They wrestled in the tournament in a somewhat early round and Simmons pinned Velikov in a spladle. Simmons ended up finishing 5th in the tournament and like all USAW matches at the tournament it was posted on Youtube and also circulated other social media as Simmons pinning a world champ was a big result even if he failed to medal. The video of the match was later removed from YouTube and scrubbed from USAW's social media. The story at the time was that it was taken down at the behest of then national freestyle coach Larry Jones with the thinking that they didn't want potential opponents of Simmons at the 2011 World Championships seeing it and working out counter measures for Simmons's spadle. At the World Championships in 2011 Simmons pinned his second round opponent in a spladle before falling to Velikov in the semifinals and ultimately finishing 5th. I don't know that the video removal was a factor at all in his placement. I think he would have defeated the Moldovan in the second round regardless and his semifinal opponent, Velikov, didn't need the video to know about the spladle. Some 12-13 years hence I tried and couldn't find video of the Simmons-Velikov match from the 2011 Ziolkowski. It is available anywhere on the internet? Simmons's matches from worlds (second round spadle vs Moldova and semifinal vs Velikov) are readily available but not the spladle from Ziolkowski.
  12. Pitt was up 6. Pitzer defaulted which made the final 20-20 and ASU held the advantage on criteria #2 (most 6 team points victories) giving them the dual. Not sure the score of the bought at the time of the default.
  13. I am sure some coaches have used that line of thinking at times. I don't think it was a factor in Brooks not wrestling Beard nor Starocci not wrestling Griffith. The merit of the strategy hinges on whether or not you feel you will gain more knowledge of your opponent than they will of you and who you think is likely to make better use of the knowledge gained. Because the obvious other perspective is that it a risk for Starocci to take on someone as dangerous as Griffith for the first time on the biggest stage. Historically throughout his career Starocci has been the one that either reversed a result (Washington, Kemerer) or separated himself from his competition (Labriola, Lewis, Massa) in subsequent matches. I kind of think PSU might be immune to this kind of thinking. Nolf and Rasheed skipping matches were likely injury management more so than keeping tactics mysterious. I think Nick Lee missed Seabass in a dual a couple years ago, but that was COVID related. These most recent two are the most suspicious, but also unlikely. There is no obvious example of them doing it and there are tons of examples of PSU wrestlers dropping a match and then reversing the result at a later date, often on a bigger stage: Ed Ruth (Amuchastegui, Dean), Wright (Hamlin, Wilps), Joseph (Imar, Subjeck, Isaac Jordan, Lewis), Hall (Bo Jordan, Kemerer), Nickal (Jackson, Martin eventually), Cassar (White), RBY (DeSanto), Lee (Eiereman), Brooks (Venz, Amine), and Dean (Caffey). The best coaching staff in the country probably thinks if there is information to be gained they will likely gather more of it and make better use of it than the other guys.
  14. The only other time I can think of a PSU wrestler missing a big match this season was in the Lehigh dual where Brooks didn't wrestle Michael Beard. At the time some people speculated Brooks skipped because he was wrestling in Senior Nationals/Olympic Trials Qualifier a week or so after that and focusing on freestyle. That ultimately didn't happen (Brooks didn't enter Senior Nationals) and I don't recall any alternative explanations like injury. I don't think the too many feels angle would be relevant for Beard, since being a former teammate, he likely wasn't lacking feels.
  15. According to Starocci it was a combination of health complications and leveling up in life that kept him off the mat last night.
  16. Why did the announcers make a point of when DeAugustino turned to face Davis? DeAugustino was on top! He is really in control of Davis standing with his back to him? Davis was facing him the entire time! It made no sense to show that freeze frame.
  17. Jomboy is a YouTuber that primarily covers baseball, but has branched out into other sports after blowing up during the Astros cheating scandal. He is known for detailed fight breakdowns and lip reading. In a recently video he broke down the ending of the Glazier Ferrari match at the Soldier Salute. I think this is the first time he has done a breakdown for an NCAA wrestling match. In it he points out that Ferrari's strike after the match missed Glazier and actually struck the official. That was a detail that I had not previously realized and I don't think was pointed out by wrestling media. He also noticed an anomaly in the post match handshake. That Kabaddi sport he covers later in the segment looks interesting. Could be an interesting game to play in wrestling practice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtclP75Y5Pk
  18. Unclear from the go fund me if he was using one or not, but always use a jack stand before getting under a vehicle. Don't trust your life to a jack. If possible put some kind of backup in place too in case it falls off the jack stand. For example, if you are taking the wheel off to do the job, place the tire/wheel such that if the car falls off the jack stand it will hit that before it totally crushes you.
  19. Past tense of expose. I image they were using it in one of the following ways. Though I guess I recalled incorrectly. CP exposed himself/Flo on CoC. 1. make (something) visible by uncovering it 2. reveal the true, objectionable nature of (someone or something). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YowvHASAdo
  20. I think Navy has a better chance of finishing undefeated in duals this year than getting an AA. They might be a top 10 dual team without a top 10 wrestler on the team According to intermat they are the #15 dual team and they only have two wrestlers in the top 20; 149 (20) and 285 (13).
  21. Tom has been known to extend a lifeline to a wrestler with a troubled past - DeSanto, Downey, Ferrari, etc. Not all of them ultimately ended up on the roster. He's also given a second chance to some wrestlers on the team that have found themselves in trouble - Stoll, Lofthouse, Dzewia, Meyer, ect. I don't think he has ever given a second chance to someone who he ultimately had to boot off the team. Downey never ended up on the roster and I don't think any of the Ferraris have yet. That fact might show the strength of his process. The fact that Brands initially had an open door for Ferrari might have less to do with desperation and more that he could relate to his situation. There was once a time when Tom Brands was a brash young man with a checkered past that included sexual assault allegations looking for a college wrestling program along with his equally talented and less troubled brother.
  22. Wasn't he exposed by Clash of Combat a couple months ago?
  23. I wonder what this would have meant for the great Anthony Gizoni. I recall reading that he won an NCAA tournament without scoring an offensive takedown. He would deliberately let people take him down, and then reverse them with his signature move. That description is a little hyperbole as there was no such thing as points offensive or defensive back in his day. Matches were either won by fall or riding time/referees decision. Still I wonder if this kind of rule change would Dean Heil him or not.
  24. What is the criteria for the Olympic redshirt? I'm a little surprised Facundo would be eligible. I thought they used to be pretty liberal in allowing anyone with a remote chance to get one. I recall guys like Pataky making use of them more out roster management than having a legit shot at the spot. The last two cycles I thought there was a pretty high bar like needing an age level medal or having made a former senior world team to qualify for one.
