And we can't get more Olympic weights?
Jim L replied to AgaveMaria's topic in International Wrestling
Even if they did in our fantasy world is wrestling the only minor sport that gets moved to the winter. Why not archery and team handball? -

Wrestling would be better served if the super bowl half time show was a wrestling match. Neither is going to happen. They are not going to completely change how the winter games work for a relatively small sport -

Also would be interesting to see, a number of fans attendance . It would not be surprising US folkstyle is the best attended style in the world -

Yes. That is mostly true, but he never stopped and he is the guy at the party you meet that is so interesting, than after 15 minutes you are done with and 2 hours later he is going full speed -

I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it. George Bernard Shaw -

Ha! Took me bit to get the reference. Board is better without him. His ranting against all others styles was beyond tiresome. It was also clear to me that he never wrestled and was living vicariously through his sons -

I guess I am showing my US centric view of the world and though I never thought all that much about, I assumed Youtube was the dominant site across the world. I did spend a little time trying to see some evidence and actually was on the UWW web site looking at what style is more popular based on teams and participants in each style and I don't see much evidence of GR being more popular throughout the world. Areas where we don't usually think that wrestling is popular like Africa, Oceania, Caribbean, etc. generally had a more FS participants thoghh sometimes it was about equal. The only place that I saw a clear preference for GR was at the Nordic games. What style is more popular does not really matter to me. I just find learning about wrestling traditions throughout the world interesting -

Not sure where that is coming from. What is a more popular style is not exactly a scientifically define measurement and I don't see anything wrong with questioning a opinion that is widely held on wrestling message boards. -

A possible unbiased measure could be YouTube views. Looking at the UWW web site, there is no evidence that GR is more popular. With a quick unscientific survey, in almost every category the FR vids have more and sometimes significantly more views. -

Not convinced either way. Most of the arguments I have seen for GR popularity use the participation level in WC as all the evidence needed. Part of my gut feel is obviously biased, being from the US. However, in addition, it was clear from the Iranian fans on the boards is that FR is way more popular and I also remember when Karelin was a star getting some press coverage in the US, the articles seemed to always mention how GR was, like the US, far less popular in Russia -

I have not seen those numbers, they could be partially convincing. BTW, I do believe that GR is the most popular sport in some countries and could be convinced that it is more popular, I just have not seen good evidence that it is and this seems to be a widely accepted assumption. To be fair, other times this has been discussed on the boards LJB was involved and I got tired of his schtick and tuned out -

Again using entry numbers world level events do not reflect that sports overall popularity in a country. For example, US Judo sends as many entries to the Judo Worlds as they do for Men's FS -

Overall number of of people actually doing the sport would be (this is vastly different from the number of entries in a world championship) Also the number of people attending events for each sport would be convincing, This is different that the number of attendees at a 5 day WC event -

I see have seen the numbers quoted and they don't convince me. That there are a good amount of small nations that send GR athletes to a WC does not make it a more popular style throughout the world. -

I have to assume that you are not old enough to remember what South African was under apartheid, . Individual South African athletes were not punished the entire country was. Exceptions were not made for athletes and yes the entire country was made a pariah. Once again, you have a warped sense of perspective if you are focused on the "huge price" an athlete may pay relvative to brutally repressed millions -

In the countries with the biggest fan bases - US, Iran and Russia (probably India as well), Greco is much less popular than FS. there are a good number of countries in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia (and maybe some Ex-Soviet) that Greco appears to be the favorite style, but I have never seen a convincing argument that Greco is more popular worldwide than FS -

The wrestling done in the ancient Olympics was vastly different from both FS and Greco. Greco does not have ancient tradition. -

I have heard that the cultural isolation of South Africa (along with economic sanctions) was a significant in the end of apartheid. Even if this is not true, mentioning the "huge price" S. African athletes paid while not mentioning the suffering of millions live their lives under apartheid is little weird to say the least. And calling a coordinated international campaign making South Africa a pariah nation "virtue signaling" is also making light of the evils of apartheid -

Being an original Olympic event is not a strong argument for continuing inclusion, IMO. I am assuming you are referring to the modern reincarnation of the Olympics in 1896. Some of the sports at that Olympics included a one-handed weightlifting and the Sailor's 100M swimming, open only to Greek sailors. -
Not that we should convict solely on the basis of appearance, but MY GAWD she has some guns!

Does NK has a history of getting caught using PEDs. I don't doubt that they would but I was aware of any history of them being caught or even accused of having a state sponsored program.
