Poll: Which freshman is most likely to win a title?
BigRedFan replied to peanut's topic in College Wrestling
More than whom? Shapiro has been wrestling collegiately for two years now (he's 25-2 over those two years), and he trains with two NCAA *champions* every day in a pretty darned good room. -
Overall, is Cornell the best choice for elite wrestlers?

I'm guessing Lewis Fernandes will be doing just that. -

I'm a good bit older than you (Class of 1980). I lived with a bunch of engineers, and they were pretty dedicated to becoming engineers. I do recall one guy who dropped out of school (and eventually returned), but he was a mess to begin with. My gf at the time was pretty exceptional (SAT > 1500, when that actually meant something!), and she managed. Likely pretty rare, I guess. I don't think I knew any ex-engineering students, but I didn't ask, and I was engineer-adjacent (CS). I applied to schools with architecture programs (Cornell, Rice, Carnegie Mellon), but once I saw what the School of Architorture demanded, I committed to computer science. There was a guy i knew in my class who was on the wrestling team and graduated with a degree in landscape architecture. One of my senior year housemates was a co-captain and got into medical school. What a work ethic these guys had. -

My daughter, class of 2020, makes 100k. Ironically, she graduated from Lehigh. All athletes must meet minimum requirements to be admitted to any university; there is no "pass through." The minimum requirements may be lower for athletes than for the general population, but the same is likely true for the gifted violinist or physics applicant. I cannot recall any Cornell wrestler who had to drop out due to academic ineligibility. It is in the university's best interest that all admitted students can thrive in the academic environment. -
No idea who this guy is, other than he was on Real Housewives of NJ (according to article). Storms onto the mat while ref is counting back points against his son (who was pinned). Overall, is Cornell the best choice for elite wrestlers?

As I said, Cornell doesn't recognize majors. "Engineering" means the College of Engineering. Students don't typically transfer between Colleges at Cornell, and the more typical case is students enrolling at easier-to-get-into colleges and transferring into the College of Engineering after taking sufficient engineering courses as electives*. Those listed as being in the College of Engineering are a senior, a junior, a freshman, a sophomore, and another sophomore. Foca (senior), Cardenas (senior), Fernandez (junior) are the ones in the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning. Not an easy academic load, IIRC. *many years ago, I had a girlfriend in the Ag school who was taking 6-7 courses per semester, including at least two engineering courses, and who did transfer into the College of Engineering and became a structural test engineer. Totally off topic: this led me to find a photo of her from her years at Cornell. Thanks! -

I did a search of the Cornell roster; Cornell does not recognize majors but does indicate college: Agriculture: 13 Arts: 5 Engineering: 5 Architecture: 3 (including three starters, two of which are AAs) ILR: 4 Business/Dyson: 3 -

That lack of infrastructure produced Kyle Dake (World champion), Vito Arujau (also world champion), and Yianni (silver medalist), and helped Shapiro to a U20 world championship. Perhaps not at the current level of the infrastructure at Penn State, but to say it can't advance the careers of many wrestlers may be a bit exaggerated. -
How is Daton Fix still wrestling in college?
BigRedFan replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Yianni was just shy of his 19th birthday (like by three weeks or so), so he was also 18 when he won his first. -
I thought that they never call a stalemate when someone has a pinning combination locked up; in this case, a cradle. Why'd they eventually stop it?

No, it's not the most. Religious, military, and foreign aid service all allow the clock to stop on the "four years out of five" NCAA rule. -
A lot of people were saying that the reason Shapiro lost was due to gas tank (endurance) problems. I had never seen him with such issues, and suspected a concussion-type issue.
-
Jeez, I was riding my bike in the pain cave, planning to watch this match while training. An hour in, they'd only gone four matches. I can only do so much...
-
Who says he had concussion symptoms return in Nashville? Isn't it possible that he had some other minor injury? Sounds like people are coming around to the reason he might have lost in Vegas was concussion or similar issue, and not "gas tank" or other things.

I guess that is his second DQ in his career. Might have ended Lillard's season (or worse).
-
I was wondering about that. Can they wait until the placement matches to pick who to count, or even after the whole thing is over? Norman had 3.5 bonus points plus 3 placement points plus 6 advancement points, whereas his replacement had 1 bonus point plus four advancement points. So net loss of 7.5 points?

Rule for a Flagrant Misconduct (which apparently is the ruling for this match): Art. 3. Wrestler — Prematch, Match or Postmatch Period — Tournament. A flagrant misconduct violation during a tournament shall be penalized by the deduction of one team point, removal from the premises for the remainder of the event, declaration of the opponent as the winner and two team points awarded for advancement. Additionally, the wrestler charged with the flagrant misconduct will not be credited with points earned before the incident, nor receive placement points or an individual tournament award.

He took two swings; I guess the first could be considered a really hard but barely legal "club," but the second was a swing to inflict damage. (edit) Make that three swings, the middle of which was close to a straight jab.

@133... #2 seed and #14 ranked Knox (Stanford) falls to unranked Boarman (Chattanooga) 11-4.

Yeah, an eight hour drive each way is just what I'm looking for. My in-laws (who live ten minutes from me) have YouTube TV, so I may ask to go over there.
