The 2014 Top Gun Wrestling Tournament has the potential to be one of the best editions of the event in its history. Complimenting what is year-to-year an excellent field is No. 4 Clovis (Calif.), three-time defending state champions in single-class California. The Cougars are that state's perennial power having finishing in the top five each of the last seven years, and thirteen of the last fifteen. Nick Nevills (Photo/John Sachs, Tech-Fall.com)However, it is no guarantee that Clovis will travel into Ohio and walk away with the Top Gun title, as two other Fab 50 teams are in the field: No. 8 Massillon Perry, runners-up in the Division I state tournament nine of the last eleven years; and No. 29 Claymont, the tournament's defending champion. Other teams with a shot at a top-five finish in the event are Uniontown Lake, Marysville, Nordonia, Sandusky Perkins, and Akron SVSM. This tournament field has historically featured some star individuals, for example Nathan Tomasello (CVCA/Ohio State), Bo Jordan (St. Paris Graham/Ohio State), Johnni DiJulius (Walsh Jesuit/Ohio State), David Taylor (St. Paris Graham/Penn State), Ben Jordan (St. Paris Graham/Wisconsin), and Colt Sponseller (West Holmes/Ohio State). That pattern does not change this year with the presence of Nick Nevills (Clovis, Calif.), a Penn State commit, who is ranked No. 1 nationally at 285 pounds and the No. 4 overall prospect in the Class of 2014. Despite no nationally ranked wrestler present in the 138-pound weight class, that weight class is projected to have the most depth. Eight returning state place-winners and two other state qualifiers could be present in this field. The group is anchored by a pair of three-time state placers, defending Top Gun champion Cody Burcher (Claymont) and returning state runner-up Ryan Skonieczny (Akron SVSM). Two-time state placer, and current favorite for the Division I state title, Michael Kostandaras (Walsh Jesuit) is also here as are the following additional state placers: Nick Boggs (Painesville Riverside), David Sparks (Marysville), Andy Dobben (CVCA), Dashawn Haynes (Buckeye Valley), and Josh Weber (Loudonville). Returning state qualifiers from the joint team favorites are also present, Lane Barnes (Clovis, Calif.) and Nick Steed (Massillon Perry). Multiple nationally ranked wrestlers are present in both the 106 and 113-pound weight classes. At 106 pounds, it is No. 2 Tyler Warner (Claymont) and No. 11 Justin Mejia (Clovis, Calif.). Additional contenders include NHSCA Junior Nationals runner-up Thomas Genetin (Massillon Perry), along with state qualifiers Anthony Jagel (Middletown) and Dante Ginnetti (Poland). The 113-pound weight class is led by No. 3 Jose Rodriguez (Massillon Perry), who is returning from missing a month of competition due to an injury sustained at the Ironman. He is joined by defending Top Gun champion Dustin Warner (Claymont), who is ranked No. 12 nationally; along with No. 19 Hayden Lee (Marysville), who is a two-time state placer. Others to note include returning state placer Corey Simpson (Field), along with Tristan Gilliland (Clovis, Calif.) and Garrett Lambert (Strongsville). Nevills, a two-time state champion in single class California at 285 pounds, is the obvious favorite in that weight class. Others in the field include state placer Drek Brumley (Akron SVSM), as well as state qualifiers in Hayden Bottorff (Miami Trace), Logan Sharp (West Branch), and Josh Rohrbacher (Sandusky Perkins). Other contenders are Nate Conti (Fort LeBoeuf, Pa.) and Chris Crumb (Olentangy). The other two nationally ranked wrestlers in this tournament field are from Massillon Perry, No. 15 Casey Sparkman at 152 and No. 12 Tony Dailey at 160. Sparkman anchors a weight class that has six others with state tournament experience: two-time state placer Jeff Hojnacki (CVCA), Andrew McNally (Uniontown Lake), Dominic Kincaid (Clovis, Calif.), Heath Phillibert (Nordonia), Dalton Hartshorn (Minerva), and Tristan Stallard (Carrollton). The only other wrestler with state experience in the weight class of defending Top Gun champion Dailey is Josh Hokit (Clovis, Calif.) A key weight class to watch in the team race dynamic is the one at 126 pounds, which features three-time state placer David Bavery (Massillon Perry) and returning state placer Khristian Olivas (Clovis, Calif.). three others in the field have state experience: Alec Cotton (Uniontown Lake), who took Bavery to overtime in the opening dual meet of the season, along with returning state placers Greg Brusco (Delaware Hayes) and Colton Ullman (Loudonville). A pair of freshmen here could make some noise: Matt Steer (West Branch) and Andrew Sams (LaSalle). Four returning state placers are present in both the 120 and 132-pound weight classes. The 120-pound weight class features four such wrestlers, led by two-time placers in Julian Gaytan (Clovis, Calif.) and Ryan Bennett (CVCA); Alex Mackall (Walsh Jesuit), a Cadet National freestyle All-American and the tournament favorite, as well as Trent Duffy (Miami Trace) have also appeared on the podium. Additional contenders here are two more Cadet National freestyle All-Americans in freshman sensation Corey Shie (LaSalle) and Medina Invitational champion Jake Newhouse (Massillon Perry). The 132-pound weight class is led by two-time state placer Isaiah Hokit (Clovis, Calif.). Other such state placers are Nolan Whitely (Walsh Jesuit), Justin Shirkey (LaSalle), and Garrett Carter (Akron SVSM). Returning state finalist Zac Carson (Uniontown Lake), who also placed at the FloNationals, lead the field at 145 pounds. He is joined by two-time state placer Taleb Rahmani (Marysville), along with four other returning and/or previous state qualifiers in Mike DeCesare (Nordonia), Walter Gibson (Akron SVSM), Austin Phillips (Massillon Perry), and Caden Herron (Claymont). Returning state qualifier Matt Dennis (Claymont) is back to defend his Top Gun title at 170 pounds, where the lead challenger is two-time state placer Isaac Bast (Massillon Perry), who was a runner-up in last year's Top Gun at 138 pounds. The other wrestler with state experience here is Brody Brand (Clovis, Calif.), while three other state alternates are in this weight class. The 182-pound weight class features defending state champion Aaron Adkins (Akron SVSM), along with defending Top Gun champion Nate Hall (Olentangy), who was a state qualifier last year. Others to watch are A.J. Nevills (Clovis, Calif.), state alternate Colt Crall (Claymont), along with returning state qualifiers in Mike Audi (Poland) and Shawn Johnson (Delaware Hayes). Three wrestlers with state experience are present at 195 pounds, led by state placers Ryan Weber (Loudonville) and Tyler McClellan (CVCA), along with Tyler Dodd (Carrollton). Lastly, it's the 220-pound weight class, which is led by four state placers. Most notable among them is returning Top Gun runner-up Austin Pfarr (Marysville), who placed second at the Ironman and was champion at SWOWCA and Brecksville this year. Joining Pfarr as state placers are Alex Woicehovich (Nordonia), Harrison Hoppel (Minerva), and Kordell Chaney (Sandusky Perkins). Matt Weiss (Clovis, Calif.), a champion at four tournaments this year including the Doc Buchanan Invitational, joins Austin Bentley (Carrollton) and Stefano Millin (Massillon Perry) as additional state qualifiers in this weight class. Also worth watching is returning state alternate Garrett Harding (Claymont), champion at Medina at the end of last month. Wrestling starts at 10 a.m. Eastern on both Friday and Saturday, while the top six placement finals are slated for a 5 p.m. start on Saturday at Alliance High School.

OREM, Utah -- Former two-time All-American wrestler Cyler Sanderson has joined head coach Greg Williams' staff as a volunteer assistant. The former Iowa State Cyclone and Penn State Nittany Lion will coach middleweights at Utah Valley. "We are very excited to have someone of Cyler's experience working with our guys," said Williams. "He brings a positive energy and winning attitude into our room that will be great for our guys to be exposed to. We are very fortunate to have him with us. "With his background wrestling for his dad, Steve, at Wasatch HS, and his brothers Cael and Cody at Penn State and Iowa State, he will be able to add training philosophies and various technique options that we welcome here in the UVU wrestling program." Sanderson is the younger brother of current Penn State head coach and former Olympian Cael Sanderson as well as Cody Sanderson, the current associate head coach for the Nittany Lions and UVU's first head wrestling coach. Cyler wrestled three seasons under his older brothers' tutelage at Iowa State before following his brothers to State College to finish out his collegiate career. Cyler is a two-time All-American as he placed seventh at 157-pounds during his sophomore season at ISU (2007-08) and sixth during his senior campaign at PSU (2009-10). The four-year national qualifier also won titles in both the Big Ten as well as the Big 12 during his tenure and ended his collegiate career with a 114-33 career record with 18 pins, 25 major decisions and seven technical falls. "This is a great opportunity for me and I'm excited to help build wrestling in the state of Utah," Cyler Sanderson said. "I'm specifically looking forward to helping these wrestlers achieve their goals of becoming National Champions at the Division I level. I plan on helping as many of them as I can as well as the program as a whole, and I am really looking forward to working at Utah Valley.” Cyler hails from Heber City, Utah, where he was a three-time Utah State Champion at Wasatch High School. The new Wolverine coach won a National Junior Championship at 140-pounds and went 163-8 while in high school. He was also a 2005 First-Team Asics All-American and an Amateur Wrestling News Second-Team All-American. Cyler was ranked first in the nation at 140 pounds in 2005 by both the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and Amateur Wrestling News (AWN) as he won the National High School Coaches Association Championship that same season. Cyler received his Bachelor of Arts degree in fine arts from Penn State University in 2010. Cyler — who recently returned home from serving a mission for the LDS Church in Austria, Germany and Switzerland — is currently continuing his education at UVU in business.

FAIRFAX, Va. -- The George Mason wrestling team has added transfer students Patrick Davis and Konbeh Koroma to its roster as officially announced on Tuesday. Davis, a sophomore transfer from NC State, wrestled as a true freshman at 174lbs for the Wolfpack last season where he finished with a record of 13-14. Davis was a two-time Delaware state champion in 2011 and 2012 and was a fourth place finisher at NHSCA Senior Nationals. He is projected to wrestle at 174lbs. for the Patriots. “Patrick has been successful at the high school and NCAA Division 1 level,” commented Coach Joe Russell. “We are excited for him to compete for George Mason University.” Koroma comes to Mason with sophomore eligibility status from Old Dominion University. The Springfield, Va. native wrestled at Robert. E. Lee High School, placing at the Virginia state meet in 2011. He is projected to wrestle for Mason at 149lbs. “Having Northern Virginia wrestlers on our team is important for us at George Mason. We want local kids to grow up wanting to be Patriots. We are excited for Konbeh to wear the George Mason uniform." “We are excited to have these two student-athletes join the team," continued Russell. "Both have worked hard to gain admission to George Mason University and it has been enjoyable to get to know them and see their efforts to become Patriots. We have high hopes for both of them on and off the mat.” Mason returns to competition this Sunday at 5p.m. when the Patriots host the Virginia Military Institute at the RAC.

The individual bracket tournament heavy month of December is long gone, and the mid-January halfway (or beyond) point of the scholastic wrestling season is here. A good mix of individual events and dual meet competition mark the week-to-week docket with perceptions of who is (close to) the best in each state on the line. Don Bosco Prep wins Virginia Duals, but has multiple tests this week Coming into the past weekend with some uneven performances in the first four weeks of their season, Don Bosco Prep, N.J. traveled to the Virginia Duals looking to establish order. Last year's state runner-up at 106 pounds as a freshman, Kyle Bierdumpfel returned to the mats for the Ironmen. Even though not at an optimal weight class, his presence at 126/132 pounds is still an asset. In the semifinals, Don Bosco Prep upended fellow Fab 50 member McDonogh, Md., by a 47-18 score, as they won nine of the fourteen weight classes; while in the final, they upended another Fab 50 squad -- Nazareth, Pa., 32-20, winning nine matches yet again. Those performances moved the Ironmen up fourteen spots in the Fab 50 to No. 23 nationally. However, there is no time for Don Bosco Prep to rest of their laurels, as they have major competition in a home quadrangular meet on Saturday afternoon. They will host No. 25 Bound Brook, defending Group 4 (big-school public) state champions Brick Memorial, and Newark Academy. Then, on Monday, they travel to No. 21 St. Peter's Prep for a dual meet. The Blue Eagles were without state alternate Sage Karam at 145, but that still doesn't rationalize the defeats. As a result, Nazareth drops five spots to No. 19 in the Fab 50, while Bethlehem Catholic jumps seven spots to No. 17. Additionally, McDonogh compounded their semifinal loss to Don Bosco Prep by getting blown out in their next dual meet against St. Anthony's, N.Y. The Eagles only won five weight classes in a 44-26 loss. Even with multiple wrestlers up in weight classes, it was still baffling. As a result, McDonogh drops seventeen spots to No. 32 in the nation. Their performance in particular at the Beast of the East keeps them as a nationally ranked team. St. Edward to dual Fab 50 team for third straight weekend Perennial Ohio power St. Edward continues its rigorous January schedule this Saturday with a home dual meet against No. 5 St. Paris Graham at 2 p.m. For the third of four straight Saturdays, the Eagles will compete in a dual meet against a fellow Fab 50 squad. This past weekend, they upended No. 30 Marmion Academy, Ill., 36-27. Despite losing the dual meet, the visiting Cadets won seven of the nine contested bouts, but had to forfeit at 145, 160, and the last three bouts of the dual meet (220, 285, and 106). Two weekends ago, Marmion Academy had wrestlers compete at 145 and 160 pounds, and both placed at the Dvorak Memorial Tournament. Also of note is that St. Edward won the two most contested matches of the meet: at 113 pounds, No. 11 L.J. Bentley upended No. 15 Anthony Bosco 3-0, while Gabe Dzuro defeated Nathan Traxler 7-6 at 182. The residual of this is that St. Edward drops five spots to No. 26 nationally. After the match was done the Blue Knights let the nation know that a disappointing Walsh Jesuit Ironman was far, far back in the rear view mirror. They won seven of the fourteen weight classes in the dual meet, but lost 27-24. Tossup matches started going in favor of Wyoming Seminary with a second match 5-4 victory from Tyler Ponte against National Prep runner-up Walker Dempsey at 145 pounds. However, Blair Academy was quick to respond with a 7-1 victory in a potential swing bout at 152 pounds, as No. 8 Mason Manville defeated No. 10 Nick Reenan. No. 20 Chris Weiler capitalized on the hole left in Blair Academy's lineup at 160 pounds due to the absence of No. 3 Dylan Milonas, as he earned a fall in 3:20 over Jimmy Stillerman to tie the dual meet at 9-9. The teams would trade decisions in four straight bouts -- No. 16 Brandon Dallavia (170) and David Showunmi (195) winning for the Buccaneers, while the Blue Knights got victories from Greg Kleinsmith (182) and Matthew Doggett (220). Two further consecutive decision victories from Jake Scanlan (285) and John Busiello (106) would give Wyoming Seminary a 21-15 heading to a crucial turn in the dual meet. For the second straight week Requin van der Merwe came up with an important victory for Blair Academy, this time earning a 7-2 victory over Trent Olson at 113 pounds. An 11-3 major decision from No. 17 Chaz Tucker would give Blair Academy a 22-21 lead, one they would keep as the teams split the last two bouts of the meet; No. 5 Matthew Kolodzik earned a technical fall for Blair at 126, while Will Verallis of Wyoming Seminary upended Alex Rinaldi 2-0 in a battle of returning National Prep placers at 132 pounds. The rest of giving Blair Academy a close call is that Wyoming Seminary moves up one spot in the national rankings to No. 6, as they swap spots with now No. 7 Bergen Catholic, N.J. The Blue Knights and the Crusaders will compete in a 5 p.m. dual meet on Friday night at the University of Pennsylvania. The Crusaders dominated their three matches in preliminary competition, as they went 31-9 in terms of bouts during victories over Shawnee (45-21), Passaic Valley (54-9), and Holy Cross (55-18). On the other hand, it was a bit more trying for their championship match opponent, No. 21 St. Peter's Prep, N.J. The Marauders won ten bouts each in victories over River Dell (47-21) and New Milford (48-18), but split the fourteen weight classes in a 32-29 victory over Delbarton, needing a technical fall from Christian Colucci (195) and a pin from Jordan Fox (220) in the last two bouts to win the meet. The championship match started with the Crusaders' ace in the hole Nick Suriano batting leadoff, and the nation's No. 2 113 pound wrestler earned an 18-6 major decision over freshman Nicholas Santos. State placer Michael Russo would respond for St. Peter's Prep with a 5-3 decision over Tyler Casamenti at 120, before a pair of wins from Peter Lipari (126) and J.P. Ascolese (132) extended the lead out to 13-3. State placer Connor Burkert (138) was able to cut into the lead with a 6-3 decision victory. However, five consecutive victories for the Crusaders -- all but one coming with bonus points -- sucked the life out of the dual meet. Notable among those wins was the 5-1 victory at 152 pounds for Joe Grello against returning state placer Ryan Burkert, though Burkert was up one weight class from normal. An 8-0 major decision for No. 2 in the nation Johnny Sebastian at 182 concluded the barrage. St. Peter's Prep would close the dual meet with four consecutive victories, including a last match forfeit at 106 pounds to make the score respectable at 34-21 in favor of the Crusaders. Sooner State journey for supremacy The Geary Invitational, which is the nation's oldest high school tournament, celebrated its 70th edition this past weekend. It was a show fitting of the occasion, as the two highest ranked teams in Oklahoma waged a tight battle all the way to the end. No. 13 Broken Arrow won the tournament with 149.5 points despite having only two champions -- No. 12 Markus Simmons (120) and No. 16 Davion Jeffries (126) -- because of their tournament-high ten placers, including eight inside the top three. Three additional wrestlers for the champion Tigers placed second and third respectively. Runner-up finishes were earned by Shea Conley (138), Tanner Bailey (145), and Paden Bailey (152). For the formerly ranked Tanner Bailey, he was upset 3-1 by Will Steltzen of Collinsville in the final. Third place finishes were earned by Damon Hail (113), Zack Edwards (132), and Isaiah Page (170). Finishing razor close in second place was No. 11 Edmond North with 147.5 points, despite missing returning state placer Cy Trindle (120). The Huskies were led by five weight class champions: No. 13 Paxton Rosen (106), No. 10 Joel Dixon (182), No. 5 Derek White (195), No. 13 at 170 Lance Dixon (220), and No. 11 at 220 Andrew Dixon (285). White was also named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler, while Andrew Dixon earned most falls in the least time. Zach Walton (160) finished in second place, while only two other wrestlers earned placement honors. Finishing in third and fourth place were Tuttle (111.5) and Collinsville (108.5). Despite having only Dakota Head (152) win a weight class title, No. 31 Tuttle had the tournament's second-most placers, as nine earned a podium finish. Of note was a runner-up finish by Riley Fielder (220) and third place finishes from Noah McQuigg (106), Beau Guffey (120), and Blake Dauphin (126). The fourth place finish, led by weight class titles from No. 9 Gary Wayne Harding (138) and Will Steltzen (145), was enough to propel the Cardinals back into the Fab 50 at No. 47 nationally. Three additional wrestlers earned runner-up honors, Nate Keim (106), No. 10 Christian Moody (113), and Roc Robbins (182). Rounding out the weight class champions were Montorie Bridges (Altus) at 113 pounds; Cub Yeager (Locust Grove), who upset previously ranked Jacob Rubio (Canyon Randall, Texas) 2-0 in the final at 132 pounds; Levi Berry (Norman North) at 160; and Drake Pilgrim (Tascosa, Texas). This coming weekend will be the Sand Springs Tournament, where Broken Arrow and Edmond North will be joined by No. 14 Stillwater. Those three teams will be in the same event, something that will also happen a couple times in February, as the teams contest for both the dual meet and individual state titles in Class 6A (big-school). Quick hitters from the past weekend No. 35 Clovis West, Calif. won the Eastern States Tournament in New York State this past weekend with 129 points, which was 30-plus points more than their closest challengers, Springfield Central (Mass.) and Hauppauge (N.Y.). The Golden Eagles had five placers -- which were led by a second place finish from No. 17 Michael Knoblauch (126), as well as third place finishes from Chris Garcia (145) and Cortes Morales (220). Seven nationally ranked wrestlers won weight class titles: No. 13 Vitali Arujau (Syosset) at 113 pounds, No. 5 Nick Piccinnini (Ward Mellville) at 120, No. 15 Travis Passaro (Eastport-South Manor) at 126, No. 14 Burke Paddock (Warsaw) at 170, No. 13 Christian Dietrich (Greene) at 182, No. 11 Levi Ashley (Shenendehowa) at 195, and No. 15 Richard Sisti (Monsignor Farrell) at 220. Of note is the tournament from Passaro, who was previously unranked, but jumps into the rankings are wins over two nationally ranked wrestlers. No. 9 Franklin Regional, Pa., was a dominant host of the 17-team Westmoreland County Coaches Association Tournament this past weekend, as six Panthers won weight class titles while six others finished inside the top four as well. Winning weight class titles were No. 3 Devin Brown (106), No. 1 Spencer Lee (113), No. 2 Tyler Smith (132), No. 2 Michael Kemerer (138), Josh Maruca (145), and No. 11 Josh Shields (152). Lee upended National Prep runner-up Ethan McCoy (Greater Latrobe) 9-5 and Smith beat No. 3 Sam Krivus (Hempfield Area) 3-2 in rematches of finals from the POWERade Christmas Wrestling Tournament. The Panthers amassed 290.5 points, more than 100 points ahead of Kiski Area (187) and No. 42 Greater Latrobe (186.5). Deterring Greater Latrobe from more points was the need for No. 19 Dom Scalise (160) to default from the tournament down to a sixth place finish after making the semifinals. That squad had No. 1 Luke Pletcher (120) and No. 5 Zack Zavatsky (182) win weight class titles, with Pletcher's coming by a 4-2 score over No. 8 George Phillippi (Derry Area) in a rematch of the Super 32 Challenge final. In a battle of the top two teams in the state of Iowa, Bettendorf beat Southeast Polk 37-27 on Sunday morning before Iowa State's dual meet against Oklahoma at Hilton Coliseum. The Bulldogs won eight of fourteen weight classes, and move ahead of the Rams in the national rankings. Bettendorf moves up five spots to No. 22, while Southeast Polk drops two spots to No. 27 in the country. Bettendorf will be one of three nationally ranked teams attending the Geneseo Bi-State this coming Friday and Saturday in Illinois. Joining the Bulldogs in attendance will be fellow Iowa squads, No. 38 Waverly-Shell Rock and No. 48 Cedar Rapids Prairie. A recap of the Detroit Catholic Central Super Duals, which featured six Fab 50 teams in the field and nine dual meets directly involving both of those teams, was published on InterMat Sunday morning. Oak Park River Forest, Ill. remains No. 3 nationally after sweeping four Fab 50 opponents; Detroit Catholic Central, Mich. moves up two spots to No. 18 after going 3-1, including two wins over Fab 50 squads; Montini Catholic, Ill. dropped nine spots to No. 20 after going 1-3 against a quartet of Fab 50 teams; Brecksville, Ohio dropped one position to No. 24 after splitting four dual meets; Davison, Mich. dropped two spots to No. 28 after splitting four dual meets; St. Johns, Mich. moved up one position to No. 37 despite losing to a pair of Fab 50 teams (both were ranked higher) on Saturday. Also on tap for the weekend ahead The Top Gun Wrestling Tournament will be held in Alliance, Ohio on Friday and Saturday. There is a trio of Fab 50 teams in the field: No. 4 Clovis (Calif.), No. 8 Massillon Perry, and No. 29 Claymont. A separate preview for that event will be posted on Thursday. No. 1 Blair Academy, N.J. travels to the Escape the Rock Tournament this Saturday and Sunday at Council Rock South, which is located outside of Philadelphia, Pa. Two additional Fab 50 squads join the Buccaneers in the field, No. 17 Bethlehem Catholic, Pa. and No. 36 Robinson, Va. Also in the field is defending tournament champions Parkland, Pa. From an individual standpoint, it is an extremely strong field anchored by No. 1 Joey McKenna (Blair Academy, N.J.) at 138, No. 2 Thomas Haines (Solanco, Pa.) at 285, and No. 3 Zeke Moisey (Bethlehem Catholic, Pa.) at 126. Both No. 20 Montini Catholic, Ill., and No. 30 Marmion Academy, Ill., will seek to bounce back from short-comings of the past weekend in a triangular meet on Saturday at Marmion Academy. The teams will dual meet each other and Westerville North, Ohio. It will be interesting to see what type of lineup each can muster. Two major showcase tournaments in the Golden State are this coming weekend, the Clinch Gear Battle of the Belt at Temecula Valley and the Five Counties Invitational hosted by Fountain Valley. A pair of Fab 50 squads, No. 39 Pleasant Grove (Utah) and No. 45 Centennial (Idaho) will be at the Rocky Mountain Rumble this weekend in Orem, Utah. Defending champions Maple Mountain (Utah) will also be in attendance. The nation's biggest showcase of below high school wrestling is also this weekend, the 2014 Tulsa Nationals kick off on Thursday and end on Saturday. Results will be available via Track Wrestling.

The backbone of the college wrestling season is not the dual meet, but it's the home-and-away dual meet. There's a reason why Minnesota drew 1,000 more fans for their home dual meet against Oklahoma State in December than they did for the NWCA Division I National Duals Finals in February, when the championship dual was the identical Minnesota against Oklahoma State, and you had Iowa and Missouri wrestling in the background, and, presumably, the teams and fans of Cornell, Ohio State, and Virginia Tech were milling around the Minneapolis area waiting for their flights home. The 2012 NWCA/Cliff Keen Division I National Duals, known as Mat Mayhem, took place at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Okla. (Photo/Austin Bernard)I do support the idea of a National Duals championship, even as earning pre-allocated points towards the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. (I don't feel it detracts one iota from the traditional tournament, other than the fact that Air Force coach Joel Sharratt can't look at the team scores before the event starts Thursday morning and say that he's in first place!) But I feel we have the wrong way of going about it. I would much more easily support a format sort of like what the NCAA College Cup uses, with single home-and-away matches until the Final Four at a neutral site. Here's my suggestion for what we can do in this regard, in what would (in my opinion) be a much better plan, that builds up fan interest (all dates are 2016): Schedule Friday-Sunday, Feb. 5-7 Dual Meet Conference Tournaments (presumably) Monday, Feb. 8 Dual Meet Selection Monday Friday, Feb. 12 NCAA Dual Meet First Round, at home sites Sunday, Feb. 14 NCAA Dual Meet Second Round, at home sites Saturday, Feb. 20 NCAA Dual Meet Quarterfinal, at home sites Friday-Saturday, Feb. 26-27 NCAA Dual Meet Final Four, at neutral site Wednesday, March 2 Individual Conference Allocations announced Friday-Sunday, March 4-6 Individual Conference Tournaments Wednesday, March 9 Individual Selection Wednesday Thursday-Saturday, March 17-19 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships While this might be a short-term cash drain, I think this would drum up attendance and fan interest throughout the championships in a way no proposal I have yet seen would. I also think this would, over the long term, be most beneficial to both our sport and the NCAA financially. Concerns Meet contraction: While most teams use their full 16-date allotment, those that have attended National Duals in recent years have not. I would greatly prefer going to 12 dates, with the current two two-day tournament exemption, and also having single home-and-away duals on a given date count as a half-date, to encourage more of them. (This would obviously require companion legislation, as would my next point.) Gap between dual meet conference tournaments and individual conference tournaments for non-qualifiers: I suspect that his could be filled in by exempting one open tournament per team that took place during this period. Student-athlete welfare: Having all of these competitions might be a concern, with this much time spent away from campus. That being said, it's early enough in the semester where that probably wouldn't be a problem at most schools, and further, you're talking about single duals, with all three being on weekends, and two of the three being on a holiday weekend. However, all of this time cutting weight may take its toll on the student-athlete. Short-term budgetary impact: Yes, there probably would be one. That being said, I feel like this is the best way to grow the sport in the long term. Also, drawing 3,000 to a single two-hour dual meet held at a campus site would be much easier than drawing that number to a six-hour multi-dual event. What it would look like ... DES MOINES, Iowa -- Notre Dame College's wrestling team proved the seed is stronger than the string Sunday at the NWCA Multi-Divisional National Duals presented by the United States Marine Corps and Hibiclens in honor of Cliff Keen. The Falcons, who took home gold in the NAIA National Duals in 2010 and in 2011, claimed the NCAA Division II trophy with a dominating 28-3 victory over Newberry at Hy-Vee Hall. Sunday's gold was nice, but the bigger match might have been in the semifinals. That's when top-seeded Notre Dame used a major-major-pin trifecta to blow open a tight dual and give the Falcons a 23-16 victory over two-time defending National Duals champion St. Cloud State. "We wrestled really hard, and they wrestled good on their feet, which is what we try to do most of the time - if not all of the time - so it worked out well," Notre Dame Coach Frank Romano said. St. Cloud's 54-match string of dual meet victories ended in the semifinals. One of those wins came at Notre Dame's expense - 17-15 in the 2013 tournament finals. Joining the Falcons as champions Sunday were Wartburg College in Division III, hometown squad Grand View University in the NAIA, Clackamas Community College in the NJCAA and King University in the women's tournament. Wartburg won its fourth consecutive team title, 29-6, over Concordia-Moorhead. The Knights were without Coach Eric Keller, who was pinned all weekend by the flu, but a technical fall by 2012 national champion Landon Williams and a forfeit at 197 bolstered their effort. Assistant coach Chris Ortner said there was a benefit to the tournament beyond adding another nice trophy to the school's burgeoning display case that includes 10 NCAA Division III national titles. The weekend showed some strengths, but also some flaws. "It was a good day, but we got exposed in some areas that we know we need to get better at," Ortner said. "There are still some weights we're trying to sort out. This is a good indicator of where we're at as far as that goes too. We won, but we like to learn as well when we win." Grand View is building a reputation for big wins on its home turf. The Vikings won each of the last two national championships in March at the Iowa State Fair's Jacobson Center. On Sunday, the Vikings got pins from 2013 national champions Chad Lowman and Eric Thompson and major decisions from Ryak Finch at 125 and A. J. Mott at 197 in zipping past Lindsey Wilson, 32-6, in the finale. It was Grand View's third straight Duals championship. Grand View Coach Nick Mitchell seemed to have thoughts of a hard Monday practice in his mind just to make sure the Vikings didn't have a lengthy celebration of their most recent championship. "If we sit back and feel good about where we're at...a lot of teams want to close the gap right now," Mitchell said. "We've got two options leaving here: They can close the gap or we can widen the gap. Obviously, the goal is to widen the gap right now." Clackamas used a weekend-long powerhouse effort, capped by a 30-13 decision over Northwest College in the championship, to win its first team title since 2011. "We got hungry for another one," Clackamas Coach Josh Rhoden said. "We came back in (recent) years, got fourth and third, and finally clawed our way back in the finals and won this baby in dominant fashion. These kids couldn't have wrestled any better today. In four meets, the Cougars totaled 20 pins, three major decisions and one technical fall. "I can't say enough about how our kids performed. We were getting falls every single time, and that's how you win dual meets." King got technical falls from Haley Augello, Sarah Hildebrandt and Ali Ragan plus a pinfrom Amanda Hendey to clip Simon Fraser, 21-19, for its first championship. Simon Fraser was led by a fall from Vicky Anthony and techs from Helen Maroulis and Justina Distasio. The women's division wrestles under freestyle rules. The crowd was good all weekend, but the most attention was paid to Sunday morning's semifinal between Notre Dame and St. Cloud. After three lead changes, Romano's Falcons took control with the majors by Joey Davis at 165 and Garrett Lineberger at 174 and the fall by Brandonn Johnson. Lineberger, a freshman, said he heard about St. Cloud State during his recruiting visit and also during practices this season. He did his part to rinse last year's bad taste by exploding on Dylon Braun, nearly pinning him and then scoring some tilts that gave him a 12-0 lead after the first period. Johnson did not require frequent hearing of the Huskies' name. He remembered the loss in the finals last year. Snapping that string was mighty important to the Falcons, just as getting the team trophy was, Johnson said. And the performance might put the unpleasant bulls-eye on their backs come March, but Johnson said the Falcons are good enough to have 10 all-Americans and be the team to beat for the national title. Romano said snapping the Huskies' run was part of a good day. "I really wasn't real cognizant of how long their win streak was," Romano said. "They've got a great team, and I'm sure they will continue to have a great team. It was a great win for us and I feel good about the whole thing in general." DES MOINES, Iowa -- Clackamas completely shredded the competition en route to their second NCWA Cliff Keen title in four years. In Saturday's action CCC demolished No. 19-ranked Pratt CC 52-3, then soundly defeated No. 7-ranked North Iowa Area CC 35-10. Sunday's action should have been more of a test for the CCC matmen, but they completely humbled No. 5-ranked Ellsworth CC 41-4 to set up a rematch with Region 18 rival and No. 2-ranked Northwest Wyoming (Northwest) in the NWCA title match. Northwest had earlier edged the Cougars in a December 14 match 21-20. Northwest came into the match with their own big wins - albeit a slightly easier road -- defeating No. 17 Colby 30-18, No. 8 Muskegon 22-15 and No. 22 Iowa Central 34-6. Northwest tallied the opening victory on a 4-3 decision of No. 4-ranked Cody Vichi over No. 3-ranked Stevan Knoblauch. Both squads traded decisions until the 149 match when No. 5-ranked Kenny Martin pinned Zach Loveless to give CCC its first lead 9-6. Eleazar Deluca's pin of Hayden Heap in the 157 match put the meet at 15-6 and gave the Cougars all they needed for the win. Northwest battled back to a 15-13 score before No. 1-ranked 184 Adrian Salas pinned No. 3-ranked Miles Nixon in the second round to make it 21-13 CCC. 197 No. 8-ranked Ihoghama Odighizuwa scored bonus points over No. 6-ranked Jonathan Wixom when Wixon was injured and couldn't continue. Heavyweight Brandon Johnson closed out the scoring with a 5-1 decision over Gabriel Escobedo. That last time CCC won the NCWA title was in 2011 -- the season they won their last NJCAA national title. DES MOINES, Iowa -- The top-ranked team in the preseason has lived up to that billing all season long, and the King University women's wrestling team proved they are No. 1 once again on Sunday at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals. The Tornado topped No. 4 Wayland Baptist University 36-7 in the semifinals, setting up a clash with No. 2 Simon Fraser University in the finals. King narrowly defeated the Clan 21-19 in the finals to take the championship. In the semifinals against Wayland Baptist, the Tornado got off to slow start, and were trailing 4-1 after the first bout. However, King came back with a vengeance, winning five straight matches to gain control of the dual. Samantha Klingel took a 10-0 tech fall in over Michelle Guerrero at 109, and Haley Augello defeated Lauryn Bruggnik by the same score at 116. Sarah Hildebrandt gave King a 13-4 lead with a 10-0 tech fall win before Megan Black beat Tarkyia Mensah on a fall in 2:37 at 130 pounds. Alli Ragan capped the run with a 10-0 tech fall win over Samantha Villegas at 136 pounds. Julia Salata and Lorrie Ramos then earned tech fall wins, 10-0 and 11-0, respectively. Malexis McAdoo capped the 36-7 win with a win by fall in 2:03 at 190 pounds, advancing the Tornado to the finals. The Clan got off a quick start, winning the 101 and 109 pound bouts to take an early 8-0 advantage. However, Augello and Hildebrandt brought the Tornado back, both taking wins by tech fall at to even the score at 8-8. Simon Fraser then held a 12-8 lead before Ragan, Amanda Hendey and Salata all earned victories to give King a 20-12 lead. Ragan topped Mallory Velte on a tech fall, 10-0 before Hendey defeated Maegan Kuruvita on a fall in 1:39. Salata then took a 6-0 decision over Monika Podgoski to stretch King's lead to eight points with two matches left. Simon Fraser didn't go away easily however, as Justina Distasio took the next bout at 170 to cut the deficit to 20-16 going into the 191 pound match. The final bout came down to the final seconds as the Clan's Jenna Mclatchy made a furious comeback to even the match with McAdoo at 12-12 when time expired. Mclatchy won a tiebreaker to give Simon Fraser three points as McAdoo earned one for the Tornado to make the final score 21-19 in favor of King. "I am proud of what these ladies accomplished. Looking back at what we have done and where we have come from the start of this program," head coach Jason Moorman said. "It was a team effort from top to bottom, and Simon Fraser is a very tough opponent. We are going to enjoy this tonight and tomorrow, and Monday we are going to continue to improve and prepare for individual national championships in two weeks in St. Louis." The title marks King's first as the finished third at the event a season ago, and second in 2012. The Tornado wrap up the WCWA season in two weeks when the travel to St. Louis, Mo., for the WCWA College Nationals. The event will take place at Missouri Baptist University on January 24 and 25.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Trailing No. 11 Illinois, 16-15, heading into the final match, the No. 9 Ohio State wrestling team got the 3-1 win it needed from heavyweight Nick Tavanello to secure its first Big Ten Conference win of the season in Champaign, Ill. Tavanello, a redshirt-freshman, scored a takedown in sudden victory vs. Chris Lopez to lift the Buckeyes (6-2; 1-2 Big Ten) over the Illini (6-3; 0-2 Big Ten), 18-16, Sunday afternoon in Huff Hall. Down 7-0 early in the match, Ohio State owned the lead only once throughout the afternoon before the final score. After redshirt-junior and No. 3 Logan Stieber put the Buckeyes on the board in the 141-pound match with his 2:02 pin over Dominic Olivieri, senior Ian Paddock followed with a 10-4 win vs. No. 16 Caleb Ervin at 149 pounds to give the Scarlet and Gray their first lead (9-7) of the afternoon. The Ohio State lead was brief as Illinois won three consecutive matches via decision between 157-174 pounds to take a 16-9 advantage. However, all three matches were close affairs with Buckeyes Randy Languis, Joe Grandominico and Mark Martin losing by a combined score of 16-10. Facing No. 15 Zac Brunson at 157 pounds, Languis dropped a 4-2 decision, while Grandominico lost a 5-2 decision to No. 12 Jackson Morse in the 165-pound match-up. It took an extra two minutes before Martin’s match against Tony Dallago was decided and it was after the first tiebreaker the score was 7-6 in Dallago’s favor. The Buckeyes answered with three consecutive wins of their own, including Tavanello’s match winner. Redshirt-sophomore and No. 7 Kenny Courts began the run with an 8-1 victory vs. Nikko Reyes at 184 pounds. Down, 16-12, entering the 197-pound bout, senior Nick Heflin, ranked No. 4, faced Jeffrey Koepke and was a 2-1 victor, setting up the heavyweight match between Tavanello and Lopez. Bakersfield, Calif. -- The Oregon State wrestling team claimed its second Pac-12 win of the season defeating CSU Bakersfield 25-10 on Sunday afternoon. After topping the Stanford Cardinal Saturday night, the Beavers kept the ball rolling through Sunday, advancing them to 6-3 on the season. The Runners earned the first four points of the match as Ian Nickell defeated Joey Delgado (141) 9-0. However, seniors Scott Sakaguchi (149) and RJ Pena (157) got the Beavs back on track once again. Sakaguchi claimed a 12-2 major decision over Bakersfield’s Dalton Kelly, while Pena matched that performance with a 14-1 major decision over Spencer Hill, giving Oregon State an 8-4 lead. Bakersfield found their way into the scoring column in the 165 lb. match as David Meza downed Oregon State’s Toney Chay 3-2, bringing the Runners within one. The Beavers responded by winning the next five bouts to clutch the victory. Joe Latham (174) started things off by recording a 12-3 major decision over Jesus Ambriz, giving the Beavers a solid five point lead. Austin Morehead (184) followed in kind, tallying a 16-2 major decision over Sean Pollock. Taylor Meeks (197) earned a 7-3 decision over Bakersfield’s Ruben Franklin, moving the score to 19-7. Amarveer Dhesi (HWT) then recorded a 3-1 decision over Sam Cervantes, extending the Beaver’s lead to 15. IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa wrestling team won nine of 10 bouts to defeat Indiana, 38-4, inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Hawkeyes (10-1, 3-0) scored bonus points in seven wins and won the only match featuring ranked opponents. Third-ranked Bobby Telford used a four-point move in sudden victory to top seventh-ranked Adam Chalfant, 9-5, at heavyweight. "Telford knew it was going to be a tough match," said UI associate head coach Terry Brands. "Chalfant is a big strong kid and he is going to come out and fight, and that's what he did. He came out and got that first takedown." Indiana struck first, in a dual that started at 285 pounds, when Chalfant scored a takedown with 1:36 left in the first period. Telford escaped in the first, allowed an escape in the second, and took his first lead of the match, 4-3, with a takedown in the third. Chalfant regained the lead with a reversal, but Telford escaped to send the match to overtime tied, 5-5. A takedown and two near-fall points 35 seconds into the sudden victory period ended the bout. "The thing that is interesting," added Brands, "is maybe that's the thing that is going to get us moving forward, because he had to come from underneath a guy and it proved to himself that he can do the things he was doing last year." "I'm building right now," said Telford. "I'm building my shape and I'm not where I want to be. I'm building all of my wrestling, but there are times in the match where I'm starting to hit on all cylinders. I'm not there yet. I'm not there at all. I got a little kick-start, a little backfire, so maybe we'll get started here." The dual was nearly all Iowa after the heavyweight bout. Indiana (7-4, 0-3) forfeited at 125, and the Hawkeyes won three straight by bonus-points to take a 23-0 lead into intermission. Tony Ramos recorded his ninth fall of the season at 133, and Josh Dziewa (141) and Brody Grothus (149) each scored major decisions. After the break, Indiana's sixth-ranked Taylor Walsh defeated Michael Kelly, 17-6, at 157, but Iowa rattled off four straight victories to close the dual. Nick Moore (165), Sammy Brooks (184), and Nathan Burak (197) won by major decision, and Mike Evans won, 6-2, at 174. The 38-4 final score was the largest margin of victory in the series since 1976, a 39-2 Iowa win. "Did you get better? That's always the ultimate takeaway," said Brands. "Are you getting better every match, every minute of every match, and then ultimately every moment of every match... "Are we getting to where we're supposed to be? Are we hanging in positions? Are we building our leads? Are we getting back in the match when we fall or slip behind? Those are great measuring sticks to how good a team is and how good a team is going to be tomorrow." Iowa returns to the mat Jan. 18 at No. 8 Nebraska. The dual will be televised on BTN. "Nebraska is next and we have to be at our best," said Brands. "That's the next thing on our schedule, we have got to put the pedal on the mat and it has to be real. I cannot be a cliché. It has to be real and we have to live it and display in on the mat." MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 2 University of Minnesota Golden Gopher wrestling team was able to cruise past border rival Wisconsin in front of 4,217 fans at the Sports Pavilion on Sunday afternoon. The 28-6 victory allowed the Gophers to improve to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in Big Ten competition. The Gophers started the dual with two consecutive losses as Jordan Kingsley (10-7) and No. 10 David Thorn (14-3) fell to their Badger opponents. No. 5 Chris Dardanes and No. 2 Nick Dardanes were able to start the winning streak for the Gophers as they would go on to win eight consecutive bouts and eventually win the dual. N. Dardanes' major decision over Rylan Lubeck gave the Golden Gophers their first lead of the dual, 7-6. Brandon Kingsley was able to improve to 14-5 on the season with his second big win at 157 of the weekend. He was able to defeat Timothy Ruschell by decision, 6-2. Danny Zilverberg came away with a major decision over Frank Cousins Jr. of Wisconsin, 10-2 at 165 lbs and Kevin Steinhaus won by major decision over Dylan Iczkowski. ITHACA, N.Y. -- It was youth vs. youth when No. 6 Cornell wrestled No. 19 Lehigh on Sunday afternoon at Newman Arena, and the Big Red's young wrestlers came through. Behind eight wins, including four by its crew of underclassmen, the home team earned a 33-7 dual meet win over the Mountain Hawks to remain unbeaten at 4-0 on the season. Cornell won the two feature matches before the intermission to take control of the dual, as ninth-ranked Chris Villalonga topped No. 10 Mitch Minotti at 149 pounds, 3-0, and freshman Brian Realbuto upset No. 8 Joey Napoli with an 8-0 major decision. After a scoreless first period, Villalonga rode out Minotti in the second and took down to begin the third. The senior reversed Minotti midway through the period and added 1:26 of riding time to capture the match 3-0. Realbuto dominated the unbeaten Napoli from the whistle, taking down the senior 18 seconds in and catching him for two near-fall points to make it 4-0 before capturing nearly three minutes of ride time. Napoli took bottom trailing 4-0, and not only did the rookie ride him out, but he also turned him for two more near-fall points to go into the final period with a 6-0 lead with ride time locked in. Realbuto escaped with 42 seconds to spare and used more than three minutes on top to take home the 8-0 major decision. Nashshon Garrett had a fairly easy go of it at 125 pounds to open the dual, topping Darian Cruz 10-3. With three first period takedowns, the sophomore rolled to a 6-2 lead after one. Cruz scored the second period's only points with an escape, and a quick escape and a final takedown for Garrett, along with more than two minutes of riding time, made it a 10-3 final. The win was Garrett's 11th consecutive. After Lehigh's sixth-ranked Mason Breckman topped Logan David 12-1 at 133 pounds to give Lehigh a 4-3 lead in the dual, senior Mike Nevinger responded with a dominant 11-0 major decision over Jim Carucci. After a scoreless first and leading just 3-0 heading into the third, Nevinger dominated the final period, earning two stall points from Carucci along with a takedown and a late three-point near-fall to complete the shutout, one of three on the day for Cornell. At 165 pounds, freshman Dylan Palacio won a wild 17-8 major over Ben Haas. Haas got the initial takedown in the first period, but an illegal hold call on the Mountain Hawk and a Palacio escape tied it at 2-2 after the first three minutes. Palacio was able to reverse Haas early in the second and then used a cradle to pick up a pair of two-point near-fall scores to make it 8-2 heading into the third. The third was a flurry of scoring, as Palacio had three takedowns and reversed one by Haas, the final coming with two seconds left in the match to secure the major decision. With Cornell leading the dual 18-4 heading into 174, Lehigh got back on the board when No. 17 Elliot Riddick outlasted Duke Pickett, 7-4. Riddick used a pair of second period takedowns and three overall to enter the final period up 6-3. With the visitor choosing down to start the third, Pickett tried to score from the top, nearly catching his ranked opponent twice, but Riddick was able to earn a late escape to neutralize Pickett's 1:24 in riding time to earn the decision. In his first match since ending the 84-match win streak of Penn State's Ed Ruth, Gabe Dean dominated en route to a technical fall with 44 seconds left on the clock in the third, topping Zach Diekel 20-5. An early takedown and a three-point near-fall in the first gave Dean a comfortable lead, and he just built on it in the second. AMES, Iowa -- The fourth-ranked Oklahoma wrestling team improved to 7-0 in dual competition on the season with a 27-11 win over conference foe and No. 17 Iowa State Sunday afternoon inside Hilton Coliseum. The Sooners, who are 2-0 in Big 12 matchups, won seven of the dual's 10 matches. "We are happy to come away with the win," OU head coach Mark Cody said. "We can definitely take a lot away from this match. These last two matches were big tests for our program. The majority of our team are prepared every time they step on the mat. Our goal for the week is to have everyone prepared for Northern Iowa when it rolls into town next Sunday." The contest began at 133 pounds, and redshirt sophomore and eighth-ranked Cody Brewer registered a 15-0 technical fall of Iowa State freshman Dakota Bauer. No. 12 Nick Lester and No. 4 Kendric Maple both won by major decision at 141 pounds and 149 pounds, respectively. Over 6,300 fans (the 15th-straight home sellout for Penn State), saw head coach Cael Sanderson's squad win nine of ten to rout the Boilermakers 34-3. Junior All-American Nico Megaludis (Murrysville, Pa.), ranked No. 2 at 125, opened up the dual with a resounding 15-4 major over Purdue senior Camden Eppert. The Boilermakers got on the board at 133 when All-American Cashe Quiroga notched a 9-2 win over Lion freshman Jimmy Gulibon (Latrobe, Pa.), who was ranked No. 9 at 133. True freshman Zain Retherford (Benton, Pa.), undefeated and ranked No. 2 at 141, majored Purdue's Danny Sabatello 10-2 to put Penn State up 8-3. Junior Andrew Alton (Mill Hall, Pa.), ranked No. 7 at 149, made his season dual meet debut with a 7-6 win over Brandon Nelsen, using 1:26 in riding time to post the victory. Penn State picked up seven bonus points off Taylor's pin and four majors (Megaludis, Retherford, Brown and Ruth). Taylor moves to 18-0 on the year. He is now 118-3 for his career with 47 pins, 38 tech falls and 26 majors. His 47 pins is six shy of Penn State's all-time record of 53 and he is 11th on Penn State's all-time wins list. Ruth is now 17-1 on the year. He is 119-3 for his career with 41 pins, 22 tech falls and 28 majors and is 10th on Penn State's all-time wins list. Retherford remains unbeaten on the year with an 18-0 mark, including three pins, two techs and four majors. Brown is 18-1 with six pins, two techs and five majors and Lawson is 16-1. Megaludis and McIntosh both improved to 17-2 on the year as well. The dual also featured an appearance by new Penn State football coach James Franklin, who watched the action mat side and addressed the crowd at halftime. Penn State is set up for a `split' Big Ten weekend next week. The Nittany Lions visit Indiana for a 7 p.m. dual on Friday, Jan. 17. Neither wrestler could break through the other's defense for the entirety of the middle stanza and Alton led by three after two. Schultz chose down to start the third period and Dylan was able to control the action from the top until the 1:36 mark. Taylor wasted no time taking Welch down, moving out to a 2-0 lead less than :20 into the bout. Taylor cut Welch loose then quickly moved in on offense again. The three-time All-American added a second takedown and led 4-2 at the 1:30 mark. Taylor quickly took Welch down a third time and then turned the Boilermaker for three near fall points. A quick adjustment led to Taylor locking Welch up and the Lion senior notched his 47th career pin at the 2:23 mark. 174: Junior Matt Brown (West Valley City, Utah), ranked No. 3 at 174, faced off with Purdue junior Patrick Kissel. Brown steadily worked his offense on Kissel, picking up his first takedown at the 2:10 mark. Brown then dominated the action on top until the 1:14 mark and lead 2-1 with 1:00 riding time. The Lion All-American then bulled through a second high single to up his lead to 4-1 with :50 left. Brown then rode Kissel out to lead 4-1 with 1:48 in time after one period. Brown chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 5-1 lead. After Kissel fought off two Brown scoring attempts, the Nittany Lion connected on a high double and took a 7-1 lead with :25 on the clock. A short ride out gave Brown a 7-1 lead with 1:55 in time after two. Kissel chose down to start the third, Brown cut him loose and then scored quickly with a low single to lead 9-3. Ruth quickly took Lynde down, taking a 2-0 lead just :15 into the bout. He cut Lynde loose and then began looking for another chance to score in the middle of the mat. Ruth took Lynde down again at the 1:10 mark and then began looking for a turning combination. Lynde escaped with :25 on the clock but Ruth quickly blew through a double leg to up his lead to 6-2 after one period. Ruth chose down to start the second period and steadily worked his way to an escaped and a 7-2 lead. The Lion senior then connected on a low single leg, turned it into another takedown, and led 9-2 at the :45 mark. Lynde chose down to start the third period and Ruth clinched the riding time point while working for a chance to turn the Boilermaker. Ruth moved out to a 10-2 lead on a Lynde stall and then cut the Boilermaker loose. The Lion senior iced the major with a takedown and ride out at the :15 mark and posted the 13-3 major with 3:12 riding time. 197: Sophomore Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calif.), ranked No. 8 at 197, met No. 16 Braden Atwood of Purdue in the dual's lone meeting between ranked foes. McIntosh scored first, using a low single to takedown to lead 2-0 at the 2:00 mark. He then dominated the action from the top position, keeping control of the Boilermaker for :36 before Atwood escaped to a 2-1 score. McIntosh then added to his lead with a last second takedown, using a high single for a 4-1 lead after the opening period. Atwood chose down to start the second period and escaped to a 4-2 score, but McIntosh continued to pressure the Boilermaker. McIntosh used another high single to force a scramble on the edge of the mat and connected on his third takedown with :30 on the clock. Atwood escaped to a 6-3 score but McIntosh led by three with nearly 1:00 in time after two. McIntosh chose down to start the final period but Atwood was able to maintain control for over 1:00, killing McIntosh's riding time advantage. Lawson used a swift double leg to roll into a takedown and a 2-0 lead at the 1:00 mark. The junior then began putting together a strong ride, looking for a chance to turn the Boilermaker for a near fall. White was able to fight off Lawson's turning efforts but the Lion's ride out gave him a 2-0 lead with 1:09 riding time. White chose down to start the second period and Lawson controlled the action from the start. The 12th-ranked junior built up over 3:00 in riding time while working to turn the Boilermaker senior. Lawson's strong ride gave the Nittany Lion a 2-0 lead with a clinched riding time point (3:09) after two. He chose down to start the third and quickly escaped to a 3-0 lead. Lawson then nearly caught White with a throw, adjusted post-shot and got the takedown with a low single at the end. Leading 5-0, Lawson continued to work from the top position. The Huskies had to do battle against four fellow members of the Fab 50 national high school team rankings in the Detroit Catholic Central Super Duals. It started with an opening dual meet against No. 11 Montini Catholic, Ill. The Huskies are ranked first in Class 3A, while the Broncos are tops in Class 2A in Illinois. Things did not start out well for OPRF as they lost tossup bouts in the three opening matches of the dual meet: Chris Garcia upset No. 16 Larry Early 4-3 at 145 pounds, Luke Fortuna defeated Matt Rundell 3-1 at 152, and No. 14 Xavier Montalvo beat Kamal Bey 6-5 at 160. However, the Huskies bounced back with aplomb, winning the next four bouts to take an 18-9 lead after the 220 weight class. Included in that stretch was two wins in tossup bouts: Andre Lee with a 3-1 overtime victory over state champion Anthony Ferraro at 195 pounds, while Emonte Logan avenged two earlier season losses in a 5-3 victory over Edgar Ruano at 220. No. 9 Michael Johnson, Jr. earned a pin in 55 seconds against Adam Lemke-Bell at 285 pounds to cut the Broncos deficit to 18-15. However, three consecutive victories from the Huskies stretched the lead to 30-15, which functionally clinched the dual meet with three bouts remaining. The final score would end up being 36-18 in favor of OPRF, with the additional notable outcome coming in the final match when No. 8 Isaiah White of OPRF defeated returning state runner-up Vincent Turk 3-2. The additional match in the opening round placing national ranked teams against one another saw No. 20 Detroit Catholic Central, Mich., defeat No. 23 Brecksville, Ohio 40-34. The Shamrocks won eight matches in the dual meet, which included a 1-0 decision victory by Myles Amine in the last bout of the dual against Sonny Lucas. That match at 138 pounds featured a pair of state placers, and it assured that the dual meet did not come down to criteria. Unlike the opening dual meet, No. 3 in the nation OPRF started their second dual meet against No. 20 Detroit Catholic Central very strong with three consecutive victories. The stretch started with junior Matt Rundell upending freshman Tyler Moreland 3-1 at 152 pounds, and ended with No. 9 Davonte Mahomes defeat No. 12 Andrew Garcia 5-3 at 170 in a battle of top 100 seniors. Senior Logan Marcicki, ranked No. 16 nationally, and Jimmy Russell would respond with victories for Shamrocks within the next three bouts to cut the deficit to 17-7. However, that would mostly be the highlight of the dual meet for Detroit Catholic Central, as the Huskies came up with five consecutive victories to make it out of reach. That string ended with OPRF leading 39-7. The last match of the dual meet -- which was at 145 pounds - would be the highlight bout of the dual, as No. 12 at 152 Nick Bennett defeated No. 16 Larry Early by a 13-10 score. This round of wrestling featured two other matches with nationally ranked teams going against one another. Unlike last year when Montini bounced back from an opening round loss (to St. Johns, Mich.), they were unable to do that in this year’s second round. It was No. 26 Davison, Mich. coming up with the 38-24 upset over the No. 11 Broncos. The Cardinals started strong, opening up a 13-4 lead after four bouts. However, Montini Catholic came back with four consecutive wins to take a 20-13 lead. To open that stretch, it was a 2-2 ultimate tiebreaker rideout victory for Anthony Ferraro at 195 pounds, where he upset Jordan Cooks, who is ranked No. 14 nationally at 182 pounds. Starting with a forfeit from sophomore Max Johnson at 113 pounds, and then ending with No. 16 Justin Oliver earning a 9-8 victory over Vincent Turk at 138, Davison turned that 20-13 deficit into a 38-20 lead. Chris Garcia would close the dual with an 11-3 major decision victory over state runner-up Matthew Miller in the match’s last bout to make the final score 38-24 Davison. The third nationally ranked team matchup in round two saw No. 23 Brecksville defeat No. 38 St. Johns. The Bees won eight of fourteen weight classes in a 33-31 victory. They won seven of nine matches after trailing 16-3 through four weight classes to clinch the dual meet with one match remaining. Arguably the most crucial bout for Brecksville was the opening one, when Grayson Davis came up with a 5-4 win over returning state placer Mark Bozzo at 152 pounds. In round three, No. 3 in the nation OPRF continued their assault on the field with a 42-13 victory over St. Johns. The Huskies bounced back from losing two of the first three weight classes with a stretch of eight victories from nine bouts, starting with a forfeit taken by Andre Lee at 195 pounds (Tyler Wildmo did not wrestle in this match for St. Johns) and going through a pin in 1:02 from No. 8 Isaiah White at 138 pounds. The two most notable bouts of the dual meet, the opening bout and the second last one, were both won by Redwings wrestlers. No. 4 at 152 Logan Massa bumped up one weight class, and scored a 15-13 victory over sophomore sensation Kamal Bey at 160 pounds; while No. 3 at 138 Zac Hall also bumped up a weight class to defeat No. 16 Larry Early 7-3 at 145. In other action in round three, Montini and Davison both had reverse outcomes in response to their round two dual meet. No. 11 Montini beat No. 23 Brecksville 36-30, while No. 26 Davison lost 33-32 to unranked Dundee, Mich. The Broncos won the last three bouts of a dual meet that saw four lead changes and an additional tie in order to win their lone dual meet of the day. After the 126 pound match, which saw Montini’s Dylan Duncan defeat Cadet freestyle All-American Justin Demicco 10-4 in a battle of sophomores, the match was tied at 26-26. In the next bout, fellow sophomore Austin Hiles gave Brecksville their last lead of the dual meet after a 12-0 major decision over Caleb Fortuna. Vincent Turk came up with a 6-2 victory over state placer Sonny Lucas in a battle of juniors at 138 pounds to cut the Montini deficit down to 30-29. Next, an 18-9 major decision from senior Chris Garcia -- a state champion last year -- gave the Broncos a 33-30 lead with one match to go. Junior Luke Fortuna came up with a match-sealing 5-2 victory over senior Grayson Davis in the match’s final bout at 152. In a dual meet where the teams split bouts 7-7, one that had six lead changes and a mid-dual meet tie, it was Dundee who upset nationally ranked Davison. It was a pair of pins from Danny Mandell and Ryan Heiserman to open the dual meet at 160 and 170 pounds for the Vikings. The Cardinals then responded with four consecutive victories, the last of which was a 3-2 tiebreaker win for Dakota Powers at 285 pounds, to take an 18-12 lead at the turn. A pin from Drew Mandell in 46 seconds at 106 pounds would tie the meet at 18-all. The squads would then trade vicotires in the next five matches, ending with a pin from No. 16 Justin Oliver at 138 pounds to give Davison a 32-27 lead with two bouts remaining. State champion Doug Rojem, with a 2-0 victory over two-time state placer Dominic Russ at 145 pounds; and state qualifier Sean Marogen, with an 11-9 overtime victory over freshman Brandon McRill at 152 would then give Dundee the bouts necessary to pull off the upset. In the fourth round of the day, the last one for the out of state squads, the Huskies would cap off their dominance with a 40-15 victory over Davison. The first six bouts of the dual meet set the tone, as the Huskies jumped out to a 23-3 lead. It started with a 15-0 technical fall from No. 9 Davonte Mahomes at 170 against freshman Jason Cooks and ended with a forfeit win from No. 6 Jason Renteria. Davison would win four of the next five bouts to cut the deficit down to 26-15 with three bouts remaining in the dual meet, which was the closest any team got to No. 3 Oak Park River Forest with a limited number of matches remaining. Key in that stretch was a 4-3 upset victory at 138 pounds by No. 16 Justin Oliver against No. 8 Isaiah White. However, No. 16 Larry Early was quick to restore order for the Huskies with a 15-0 technical fall victory over three-time state placer Matthew Miller at 145. A 3-0 decision over Matt Rundell at 152 and a 24-second pin by Kamal Bey at 160 would cement the OPRF victory. The other dual meet placing nationally ranked teams against one another in the fourth round saw No. 20 Detroit Catholic Central upend No. 11 Montini Catholic 44-25, as the Shamrocks won nine of the weight classes. Key to the meet was the starting four weight classes, as Detroit Catholic Central won all four matches and jumped out to an 18-0 lead. Notable victories in that stretch were earned by Nick Giese, 6-4 over state champion Anthony Ferraro at 195 pounds, along with the 7-2 decision win for Jimmy Russell over Junior freestyle All-American Edgar Ruano at 220. The last ten matches would be split at five-apiece between the two squads. Most notable in that stretch were a 4-2 overtime victory for Vincent Turk over Myles Amine at 138 pounds, and the pin in 1:35 for nationally ranked Nick Bennett over Chris Garcia at 145 to clinch the dual meet for the Shamrocks. Stanford, Ore. -- The No. 24 Oregon State wrestling team defeats No. 21 Stanford 21-14, winning the last three bouts to clench its first Pac-12 victory. Freshman Amarveer Dhesi (HWT) kicked things off for the Beavs, defeating Stanford’s Josh Marchok by an 11-4 decision, giving Oregon State an early 3-0 lead. Stanford would claim the next 10 straight points, giving them a solid lead. Evan Silver collected a 12-3 major decision over Oregon State’s Joey Palmer (125), while Stanford’s Ryan Mango and Peter Russo each claimed decisions over Drew Van Anrooy (133) and Joey Delgado (141). Seniors Scott Sakaguchi (149) and RJ Pena (157) got things back on track for the Beavers, earning six straight points. Sakaguchi defeated Donovan Halpin by a 10-5 decision, and Pena topped Bret Baumbach 7-3, cutting Stanford’s lead to just one. EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The seventh-ranked Mizzou Tigers (3-0) extended their winning streak to 13 dual wins over a 15-year period with a 40-0 victory over the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars (3-9) Saturday night. Redshirt freshmen Blake Pepper and Matthew Lemanowicz both won their collegiate debuts, posting back-to-back pins at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively. Pepper met up with SIUE's Karsten Van Velsor, who he defeated in the finals at the Joe Parisi Open earlier this season, 9-7. The two traded a flurry of points throughout the first period, as Pepper took Van Velsor down first before being reversed eight seconds later. Pepper regained the lead quickly though with a reversal of his own, and added a takedown halfway through the frame to take a 6-3 advantage after three minutes. The Mizzou redshirt freshman started on bottom in the second, and escaped before scoring another two-point takedown. Pepper held Van Velsor down, and finally turned him onto his back for a pin at 4:02. Immediately after at 157 pounds, redshirt freshman Matthew Lemanowicz followed suit with a pin of his own in what was his dual collegiate debut as well. Lemanowicz carried a 4-1 lead into the third period over Logun Taylor before reversing and adding two more on a takedown versus his SIUE counterpart. With under a minute to go, Lemanowicz rolled Taylor into danger, and at the 6:10 mark, the official smacked the mat and awarded the fall. The two pins increased the Tigers lead to 22-0 before a quick intermission. True freshman J'den Cox also added a pin at 197 pounds with a cradle over Chris Johnson with less than 30 seconds to go in the first period. Saturday's victory is the Tigers' third shutout in the past two seasons, as the Tigers blanked Old Dominion and Baker in 2012-13. The win also increases Mizzou's all-time record versus SIUE to 21-4, and marks the 13th straight victory over the Cougars over a 15-year span. The two squads have faced off the past four seasons, with the Tigers outscoring SIUE, 173-3. Following this non-conference victory, the Tigers are now slated for three conference battles, beginning on the road at Central Michigan on January 19. The Chippewas are 2-1 in Mid-American Conference action following a 24-15 loss to Northern Iowa on Saturday night. GUNNISON, Colo. -- The Air Force wrestling team posted a 4-0 record at the 24th-annual Tracy Borah Duals, hosted by Western State Colorado, on Saturday. The Falcons opened with a 26-9 victory over the Mountaineers, followed by wins over Embry-Riddle (37-12), Colorado Mesa (36-9) and Simon Fraser (51-0). With the dual victories, the Falcons improve to 7-2 on the season. Against WSCU, Air Force won its first seven bouts to stake a 26-0 lead before the Mountaineers came back to win decisions in the final three weight classes. Junior Jesse Stafford (Loomis, Calif.) led the way for the Falcons, scoring a technicall fall at 165 pounds, while Natrelle Demison (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif.), Josh Kreimier (Sr., Fort Collins, Colo.) and Konner Witt (So., Oak Harbor, Ohio) posted major decisions at 149, 157 and 174 pounds, respectively. In their second dual of the day, the Falcons won eight of 10 bouts, with Kreimier, Stafford and 197-pounder Jack Carda (Jr., Kimball, S.D.) registering falls to lead Air Force. Meanwhile, Air Force won eight straight matches to start its dual versus Colorado Mesa, before dropping its final two bouts. CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The Panthers stay perfect in duals after beating Central Michigan, 25-14, in their first home conference dual. No. 15 Joey Lazor made the most of his return to the dual lineup by notching the first fall of the evening in 5:10. Lazor’s pin came at the end of a string of wins from the Panthers. “It’s great when you take the chance to put a guy away,” said head coach Doug Schwab. “Bonus points will always be huge for winning duals. It’s good to get him back out there. We just need to get him on a roll. Sometimes one win can do a lot for a guy.” No. 7 Dylan Peters and No. 2 Joe Colon gave UNI the 6-0 lead with their decision wins. Colon beat No. 15 Joe Roth for his 19th win of the season. The win vaulted Colon into the all-time top 10 list for winning percentages for a single season. His current 0.950 makes him third on the list. “I am in the position to win a national title, and I want to keep it that way,” said Colon after his win. No. 11 Cooper Moore gave the Panthers another big boost with the only other fall of the night. “Joe, Dylan and Blaize Cabell set a high pace for our team tonight,” said Schwab. Cabell topped off the Panther team win with a major decision win. He had earned a major decision when he grabbed a last-second takedown to extend his lead. “When you come back and get a takedown with just five seconds, that’s what we want to see,” said Schwab. “That is going to be the best way to get to the next level.” The Panthers improve to 5-0 in duals and are ranked second in the Mid-American Conference. PITTSBURGH -- The No. 12 University of Pittsburgh wrestling team (5-1, 2-0 ACC) started with three victories by major decision and didn’t look back en route to a 27-7 win over North Carolina State (7-2, 0-1 ACC) in its ACC home opener at Fitzgerald Field House. Anthony Zanetta started the night off with a convincing 19-6 major decision over Micah Perez at 125 pounds. Zanetta used five takedowns, two three-point near falls, an escape and a bonus point for riding time to earn the victory. Shelton Mack followed Zanetta with a major of his own at 133 pounds over Chris Wilkes. Mack led by a mere 4-2 margin going into the third before pouring it on in the final frame. Mack started down in the third and quickly escaped to gain a 5-2 lead. A pair of takedowns less than 20 seconds apart sprung the edge to 9-3. With time running down in the match and riding time locked up, Mack scored on a go behind to earn the 12-4 major decision, giving Pitt an 8-0 lead. At 141 pounds, Edgar Bright pounced on Sam Speno early scoring a takedown a mere 15 seconds into the bout and riding Speno out for the remainder of the period. In the second, Bright started down and quickly escaped before scoring a pair of takedowns to lead 7-1 going into the third. A stall on bottom in the third pushed the lead to 8-1 and Bright was able to wrap up the major with an impressive 5:23 of riding time. Pitt picked up three more points at 149 pounds thanks to Mikey Racciato who earned a 15-13 decision over Brian Hamann. The two wrestlers exchanged takedowns, reversals and nearfalls in a back-and-forth match. With Hamann leading 13-12 with 30 seconds left, Racciato was able to roll through and score a reversal to take the 14-13 lead with a mere 13 seconds left. The NC State staff challenged the call but it was upheld and Racciato was able to ride out Hamann the rest of the way to secure the win. The Wolfpack got on the board with a decision at 157 pounds but Pitt quickly responded picking up decisions at 165, 174, 184 and 197 pounds. At 165, Geno Morelli used a second period escape and takedown and two near fall points in the third to take a 6-1 decision over Peter Santos. In the lone bout between ranked wrestlers on the evening eighth-ranked Tyler Wilps earned a hard fought 4-0 victory over No. 19 Peter Renda. Making his return to the dual lineup, Max Thomusseit looked solid at 184 pounds with an 8-4 victory over Michael Macchiavello. Nick Bonaccorsi rounded out the Panthers in the win column with his 10-5 decision over KaRonne Jones. Despite dropping the heavyweight bout, Pitt was able to win handily, 27-7, earning its first home ACC victory. The Panthers will return to action tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. when they host the nine-team Pitt Duals. Pitt will face off with Duke, Davidson and Buffalo on the day. Lincoln, Neb. -- The No. 8 Nebraska wrestling team completed a weekend sweep at the Devaney Center after notching a 30-9 victory over Penn in front of 2,746 fans on Saturday night during the “Tumble and Rumble” event. Ranked grapplers Jake Sueflohn (No. 6 at 149) and Robert Kokesh (No. 4 at 174) led seven Huskers who posted victories against the Quakers during the dual, which occurred simultaneously with the women’s gymnastics meet against Northern Illinois. Sueflohn pinned Andrew Lenzi in 4:53 in the sixth match of the dual to earn his third fall of the season. Kokesh picked up his eighth fall of the season, pinning Zach Agostino in 4:50 in the ninth match of the night. Prior to Sueflohn’s win, NU held a 10-6 advantage over Penn at the halfway point of the dual, winning three matches and falling in two. Collin Jensen (HWT), No. 9 Tim Lambert (125) and Shawn Nagel (133) strung together three consecutive Husker victories during that stretch.
