NORMAN, Okla. -- It was like déjà vu for the UNI wrestling team when they knocked off undefeated No. 4 Oklahoma, 19-17. Just as it did last season in the West Gym at UNI, the team win came down to the final match of the dual. UNI didn’t come out with the victory in heavyweight, but they had built a lead that Oklahoma was unable to overcome. UNI got out front 12-0 and Dylan Peters and Joey Lazor beat two highly ranked opponents before the Sooners could get on the board. UNI improves to 6-0 in duals. The Panthers are ranked second to Missouri in the Mid-American Conference. MATCH BY MATCH Redshirt freshman Peters got UNI off to a strong start by knocking of No. 5 Jarrod Patterson in the 125-pound match. No. 7 Peters earned a reversal off injury time and earned riding time to win 4-1. Joe Colon defended his top ranking in the 133-pound weight class and stayed perfect (6-0) in duals with a 7-5 win over No. 8 Cody Brewer. Just when it looked as if the Panthers would lose its first match of the day, No. 15 Joey Lazor flipped off his back to pin No. 10 Nick Lester in 2 minutes, 6 seconds. The Sooners’ Kendric Maple stopped the Panthers’ run. Tyler Patten couldn’t hold off No. 3 Maple in the final seconds, and Maple went on to get the final points needed for a major decision win, 10-1. An early takedown put Jarrett Jensen in the lead at 157 pounds, and he continued to dominate until the third period. A series of takedowns by No. 19 Justin DeAngelis tied up the score, where a takedown in overtime sealed the 17-15 win for the Sooners. At 165 pounds, Clark Glass held off No. 11 Cooper Moore early, but Moore took the match 6-2 to break the Sooners’ streak. Andrew Howe proved why he was ranked first in the nation at 174 pounds with a 22-8 major decision win over No. 16 Cody Caldwell of UNI. No. 5 Ryan Loder returned to the dual lineup to defend his perfect dual record and earn his second major decision of the season. He kept Danny Chaid scoreless, winning 13-0. UNI led 19-11 with the final two matches to go. Basil Minto refused to give up bonus points to No. 3 Travis Rutt, keeping the Panthers in the lead. However, Rutt would go on to win the 198-pound match, 6-3. It was up to Blaize Cabell to keep the Panthers in the lead. He kept the score close, but lost 5-4 to No. 18 Ross Larson. CAT STATS Four Panthers in today’s lineup remain undefeated in duals: Peters, Colon, Lazor, Loder. Peters is two falls away from making the list of top 10 Panthers with most falls in a single season. He has 13 pins total, with eight of them coming against a Division I opponents. Those eight falls put him sixth in the nation for most wins by fall. Colon is the Panthers’ first top-ranked wrestler since Dylan Long in 2003. Long went on to finish second at the Division I national championships in the 141-pound weight class. Colon is second in the nation for the most wins by technical fall. Colon hasn’t lost a dual since joining the Panthers in the 2011-12 season. His .952 winning percentage makes him third on the all-time list of highest winning percentages for a single season. Lazor has the second most career wins on the team. His win today was No. 75. Loder leads the team with 103. Loder has not lost a dual since the 2011-12 season. He has the fifth-highest career winning percentage (.817) of all Panthers with at least 50 wins. Prior to this season, UNI had not been ranked in the top 10 since 2003. NEXT UP The Panthers return home to host the conference favorite, Missouri. The dual is set for 7 p.m. Jan. 24. The 12th-ranked Virginia wrestling team captured a 20-12 dual win at Old Dominion Sunday afternoon at the Ted Constant Center in Norfolk, Va. Virginia (13-2) won six weight classes, highlighted by a technical fall by second-ranked Nick Sulzer (R-Jr., Cleveland, Ohio) at 165 pounds. That match was an aberration for the day though, as eight of the 10 bouts were decided by three points or fewer in a hotly-contested dual. “That’s a really good team we just beat,” Virginia head coach Steve Garalnd said. “I’m proud of our guys, not only for the individual efforts but the overall team effort as well. We know the ODU coaches and their wrestlers well and they have a lot of talented guys up and down their lineup. But we’re really starting to see what kind of team we have, and it’s exciting to see guys like Nick Sulzer go out and get bonus points for the team and others picking up big wins for the team.” Stephen Doty (R-Sr., St. Louis, Mo.), Zach Nye (R-So., Enola, Pa.), Ethan Hayes (R-So., New Lebanon, Ohio), Nick Herrmann (So., Amarillo, Texas) and Blaise Butler (R-So., Belvidere, Ill.) also won by decision for Virginia, which picked up its sixth straight dual victory. The match started at 165 where Sulzer, ranked second nationally, racked up six takedowns as well as three back points in cruising to an 18-3 technical fall over Dillon Geoghegan for the lone bonus points of the dual. Sulzer is now 24-1 this year, with 18 of his wins resulting in bonus points (two falls, four tech falls, 12 major decisions). Doty upped his record to 20-4 with a 4-1 win over Billy Curling at 174, giving UVa an 8-0 edge before the Monarchs (3-8) picked up their first win over the day when Jack Dechow scored on a third-period takedown to hand 19th-ranked Jon Fausey (R-Sr., Dalmatia, Pa.) a 3-1 defeat at 184. Nye scored his fifth straight win as he recorded a third-period takedown to snap a 1-1 tie in defeating Kevin Beazley, 3-2, at 197. Nye is now 14-6 on the year and has gone 7-2 since the start of the new year. Hayes earned his second win of the weekend with a 4-2 victory over Matt Tourdot in the heavyweight bout, and Herrmann followed with a 5-2 decision over Brandon Jeske at 125, giving the Cavaliers a 17-3 team advantage. ODU captured the next three weight classes, all in close fashion. Scott Festejo pulled away late for an 11-6 decision over Joseph Martinez (R-So., Platteville, Colo.) at 133 before fourth-ranked Chris Mecate outlasted No. 14 Joe Spisak (R-Jr., Boiling Springs, Pa.) 3-1 at 141. Mecate scored a third-period takedown for the lone offensive points of the bout. Chris Yankowich (So., Norristown, Pa.) fell 3-0 to Lenny Richardson at 149 as the Monarchs cut their deficit to 17-12, but Butler, ranked 13th nationally, led nearly the entire way in a 5-2 decision over Tristan Warner at 157 to seal the team win. UVa returns to ACC competition at 7 p.m. Friday when it travels to No. 13 Pittsburgh (9-1) for a key ACC match as the teams tussle for the first time as conference rivals. Pitt knocked off No. 5 Oklahoma State on criteria, 19-18, Sunday afternoon at home. Megaludis wasted no time taking an early lead, using a single leg to open up a 2-1 lead less than :10 into the bout. Megaludis continued to pressure White, working his shoulders to the ground and working his way behind the Wildcat for a takedown and a 4-2 lead after cutting him loose. Megaludis quickly tacked on a third takedown and then a fourth to break open an 8-4 margin. Megaludis continued his offensive work with a fifth takedown and a ride out to lead 10-4 with 1:02 in riding time after one. Megaludis chose top to start the second, White escaped and Megaludis quickly took him down twice. The Lion junior added three near fall points after the second takedown and led 17-6 at the 1:00 mark. Megaludis added one more three point turn and led 20-6 with 2:46 in time after two. White chose down to start the third period and Megaludis continued his strong work on top. Looking to cement a tech fall or pick up a pin, Megaludis worked White's shoulders to the mat, nearly picking up the pin. The three-point near fall gave the Lion a 23-6 tech fall at the 6:39 mark. 133: Red-shirt freshman Jimmy Gulibon (Latrobe, Pa.), ranked No. 15 at 133, took on Northwestern's Dominick Malone. Gulibon was the aggressor early, setting up his offense and forcing Malone towards the edge of the mat. Malone took his first shot off a reset and worked his way to a takedown and a 2-0 lead with 1:24 on the clock. Malone built up riding time with strong work up top but Gulibon escaped to a 2-1 score with :30 left in the opening period. Trailing 2-1, Gulibon chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 2-2 tie. Malone had 1:02 in riding time. Gulibon countered a slight Malone shot and quickly rolled behind him for a takedown and a 4-2 lead with 1:00 on the clock. The Lion freshman maintained control of Malone for the period's final minute, erasing the riding time and taking a 4-2 lead into the third period. Malone chose down to start the third period and Gulibon controlled the action once again from the top position. Malone was unable to work to his base as Gulibon first built up a 1:00-plus time edge and then forced a stall on the Wildcat. Gulibon then turned Malone for three back points and a 7-2 lead. A short ride out and Gulibon posted an 8-2 with 2:02 in riding time. 141: True freshman Zain Retherford (Benton, Pa.), ranked No. 2 at 141, wrestled NU junior Pat Greco. Retherford blew through an early takedown, taking the Wildcat down just :05 into the bout. The unbeaten Lion then began a dominating ride, keeping Greco bellied out for nearly a minute before the Wildcat escaped. Retherford continued to pressure Greco, taking multiple shots, forcing Greco into a stall warning and then turning a low single into a takedown and a 4-1 lead at the buzzer. Retherford chose down to start the second period, quickly escaped and then picked up his third takedown to lead 7-1 with 1:20 on the clock. Retherford cut Greco loose to a 7-2 score and turned right in for more offense. The Lion's furious offense allowed him to lead 7-2 with 1:36 in time after two. Greco chose neutral to start the third period and Retherford continued to force the Wildcat backwards. Retherford moved out to an 8-2 lead with a stall point at the 1:10 mark and then fought off a Greco shot for the next :20. He countered the move, rolled behind the Wildcat and took a 10-2 lead with a clinched riding time point at the :30 mark. A short ride out gave the Lion freshman an 11-2 major with 2:10 in riding time. 149: Red-shirt freshman Zack Beitz (Mifflintown, Pa.) took on talented Wildcat freshman Jason Tsirtsis, who was ranked No. 4 at 149. Beitz and Tsirtsis traded early shots in the middle of the mat. Tsirtsis gained control of Beitz's right knee and began working for a takedown. But Beitz was able to force a stalemate after :30 of wrestling and the score remained 0-0 at the 1:28 mark. Beitz nearly connected on a low single at the :40 mark, but Tsirtsis was able to back away to keep the bout scoreless after the opening stanza. Tsirtsis chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead. The Lion freshman matched the ranked Wildcat shot for shot for the bulk of the period. The Lion connected on a single leg and looked to get a takedown but the official ruled no takedown. The Penn State corner called for a video review and the takedown was given. Beitz led 2-1 at the :27 mark. Tsirtsis was able to tie the score with a quick escape and the bout moved to the third period knotted at 2-2. Beitz chose down to start the third period but could not break free of a strong Tsirtsis ride. Tsirtsis maintained control by holding onto Beitz ankle and worked his riding time over 1:00. Beitz escaped to a 3-2 lead at the :50 mark but Tsirtsis had 1:13 in riding time. Time ran out and Tsirtsis' riding time sent the match to sudden victory tied 3-3. Tsirtsis got in on a single at the :40 mark, working for a winning takedown. Beitz nearly fought off the move but Tsirtsis connected for a 5-3 sudden victory win. 157: Senior James Vollrath (Richboro, Pa.) met Ben Sullivan at 157. Vollrath quickly took control of the match with a takedown out of the gates. The Lion senior was strong on top, locking up a cradle quickly for three back points and a 5-0 lead with 1:30 on the clock. He continued to turn Sullivan, looking for a pin. Sullivan rolled through the move but the second three point near fall gave the Lion an 8-0 lead after one. Sullivan chose down to start the second period and Vollrath quickly cradled the Wildcat, picking up the pin at the 4:01 mark. 165: Senior David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio), ranked No. 1 at 165, took to the Rec Hall stage against No. 9 Pierce Harger of Northwestern. Taylor quickly took Harger down to lead 2-0 :30 into the bout. Harger escaped to a 2-1 score only to have Taylor connect on an ankle pick. Taylor then turned Harger for two back points and the Lion senior led 6-1 at the 1:15 mark. Taylor cut Harger loose with :25 left, used another quick pick and then tilted the Wildcat for three back points. The quick burst put Taylor up 11-2 after one. Harger chose down to start the second period only to be titled again by Taylor. Taylor picked up another three point near fall to move out to a 14-2 lead, reset, and titled Harger again to notch the 17-2 tech fall at the 4:45 mark. 174: Junior Matt Brown (West Valley City, Utah), ranked No. 3 at 174, faced off against Northwestern's Lee Munster, who entered the dual ranked No. 9. Brown scored quickly, taking Munster down for an early 2-1 lead. Brown then locked up a cradle on the edge of the mat, picking up the takedown before action moved out of bounds. Leading 4-1, Brown chose down on the reset after injury time and quickly escaped to a 5-1 lead. He then connected on a high single leg and led 7-1 with :50 on the clock. Brown rode Munster out and led 7-1 with 1:17 in time after one. Brown chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to an 8-1 lead. Brown added another takedown and took a 10- lead. He dominated the action from the top position before Munster took an injury default, giving Brown the win and putting Penn State up 29-3. 184: Senior Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.), ranked No. 2 at 184, took on Wildcat sophomore Jacob Berkowitz. Ruth scored quickly, taking Berkowitz down, gaining control of his arm and turning him for two near fall points and a 4-0 lead at the 2:10 mark. The Loin All-American then locked up a cradle, turned the Wildcat and picked up the pin at the 1:36 mark. 197: Sophomore Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calif.), ranked No. 7 at 197, faced off with No. 17 Alex Polizzi in a key match-up at 197. McIntosh scored first, taking Polizzi down to lead 2-1. The Lion sophomore then used a low single off a reset to take a 4-2 lead after cutting Polizzi loose with 2:00 on the clock. A throw by the Lion nearly led to a quick pin, but the takedown did give McIntosh the 6-2 lead. Polizzi notched his first takedown after an escape with :45 on the clock to cut McIntosh's lead to 7-5 after a McIntosh escape. The Lion, undaunted, used a low double for a late takedown to lead 9-5 after one. McIntosh chose down to start the second and quickly escaped to a 10-5 lead with 1:03 in riding time. Looking for bonus points, McIntosh bulled through a low double for a 12-5 lead at the 1:20 mark. Northwestern was deducted a team point with :50 on the clock for a second bench warning. McIntosh led 12-6 after two and Polizzi chose down to start the third. A quick escaped gave McIntosh a 12-7 lead with 1:35 on the clock and the Lion blew through another low double for a takedown and a 14-7 lead. Polizzi escaped to a 14-8 score and McIntosh looked to clinch a major with another takedown. McIntosh turned the trick with just :02 left and, with the final takedown and 2:08 in riding time, posted the 17-8 major. 285: Junior Jimmy Lawson (Tom's River, N.J.), ranked No. 12 at 285, met his second ranked foe of the weekend, facing off with No. 4 Mike McMullan in the heavyweight bout. The duo battled evenly for the first minute, with Lawson pushing off an early McMullan shot. McMullan gained control of Lawson's left leg, working for a takedown at the 1:20 mark. But Lawson was able to fight off the move until the :16 mark. McMullan took Lawson down on the edge of the mat and Lawson called quickly for injury time. The takedown and two near fall points put McMullan up 4-0 and the Penn State heavyweight was not able to continue, giving McMullan the injury default win.

PITTSBURGH -- The No. 13 University of Pittsburgh wrestling team (9-1) won a thrilling 19-18 dual over No. 5 Oklahoma State (4-4) this afternoon at Fitzgerald Field House. With his team trailing by three going into the final match, senior heavyweight P.J. Tasser was able to bring the crowd of 1,921 to its feet with an overtime takedown of OSU’s Austin Marsden to even the score at 18-18. The Panthers then were awarded the tiebreaking bonus point on criteria thanks to a pin from freshman Mikey Racciato at 149 pounds. Oklahoma State started out the match with victories at 125 and 133 pounds to take an early 7-0 lead before freshman Edgar Bright was able to knock off Anthony Collica at 141 pounds. Bright jumped on 12th-ranked Collica early scoring the match’s first takedown and not letting up adding three more takedowns, an escape and a bonus point for riding time to take the match 10-5. Racciato gave Pitt its first lead of the afternoon when he was able to pin eighth-ranked Josh Kindig at 149 pounds. Kindig scored the lone takedown in the match but Racciato was able to score a quick reversal and get Kindig to his back eventually completing the fall at the 1:23 mark to send the crowd into a frenzy. The Cowboys rallied to win the next three matches, including a highly controversial overtime bout at 174 pounds between Tyler Wilps and second-ranked Chris Perry, to take an 18-9 lead with a three bouts left to go. Max Thomusseit picked up a decision over Nolan Boyd at 184 pounds to start the Panthers’ comeback. Thomusseit and Boyd entered the third even at 3-3 when Boyd was able to turn Thomusseit for two back points to gain a 5-3 edge. Thomusseit kept his composure and scored a reversal to even the match. With a bonus point for riding time locked up, Thomusseit cut Boyd and was able to score off a high single with 20 seconds left in the match to earn the 8-6 decision. At 197 pounds, Pitt needed Nick Bonaccorsi to win in order to keep its hopes of a victory alive and the redshirt sophomore delivered with a decision over Kyle Crutchmer. After the two combatants exchanged escapes, the match went to overtime even at 1-1. Bonaccorsi was the aggressor in overtime and was able to get in on a leg quickly and work his way around for the takedown to secure the 3-1 win and get the Panthers within striking distance heading into the final bout of the day. Tasser stepped to the mat with the match on the line and his team trailing 18-15 giving up nearly 50 pounds to No. 14 Austin Marsden but the senior would not be denied when he capitalized on a double leg shot near the Pitt bench in the first sudden victory period of overtime to give him a 3-1 win and tie the match at 18-18, allowing the Panthers to win on criteria. Pitt will return to the mats on Friday, Jan. 24, when it hosts No. 12 Virginia (13-2, 2-0 ACC) in a key Conference dual at 7 p.m. inside Fitzgerald Field House. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman heavyweight Adam Coon (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville HS) used an overtime takedown to knock off two-time defending NCAA champion Tony Nelson and seal the No. 19-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team's 19-14 victory over No. 2 Minnesota on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 19) in front of 1,354 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines won six individual matches in the dual, improving to 3-0 in Big Ten Conference competition, while dealing Minnesota its first loss of the season. With just two points separating the teams, the dual came down to the final match, featuring the nation's top heavyweights -- No. 1 Coon and No. 2 Nelson. The wrestlers traded escapes in regulation and the first tiebreaker, neither riding for longer than 10 seconds. Coon got in deep on several shots earlier in the contest but scored his winning takedown off a counter attack in the second sudden-victory frame, turning the corner on a Nelson double leg to claim the match 4-2. He improved to 23-0 on the season. The Wolverines jumped out to a significant early advantage, claiming five of the first six matches to lead 16-3 entering Minnesota's gauntlet of ranked upperweights. Among the early victories, Michigan earned back-to-back upsets from fifth-year senior Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) and freshman Brian Murphy (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North HS) at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively, to put U-M in excellent shape at the intermission break. Grajales, ranked 12th at 149, took advantage of a big early lead to knock off No. 2-ranked Nick Dardanes, 6-4. The Wolverine senior struck first on an arm spin midway through the first period and rode out the rest of the period and all of the second. He added a penalty point in the third before giving up a pair of late takedowns in the waning moments that narrowed the final score. Murphy, ranked 15th, rallied from an initial deficit against eighth-ranked Dylan Ness at 157, scoring takedowns in the second and third periods to seal a 5-2 decision. After a scoreless first period, Ness grabbed the first lead with a quick escape in the second and subsequent low single-leg takedown. Muprhy escaped and shot in on a late single-leg attack of his own, limp-arming out of a whizzer to get the takedown at the buzzer. With the score deadlocked, Murphy choose neutral in the third and countered a late Ness single-leg shot to score the winning takedown in the final 10 seconds of the match. The Wolverines also earned early wins from sophomore/freshman Conor Youtsey (Parma, Mich./Mason HS) and senior/junior Steve Dutton (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point HS) at 125 and 141 pounds, respectively. Youtsey jumped out to a big early lead en route to a 12-6 decision against Sam Brancale in the opening match, scoring two takedowns and a pair of back points -- off a head scoop -- in the first period. He rode out the second and earned a reversal and three-point near fall in the third but gave up a late counter takedown and back points to lose the bonus point. Dutton also cruised in his 141-pound match against Josh Shupe, scoring three takedowns and eight back points, including a pair of three-point tilts, en route to a 16-3 major decision. Dutton appeared to have the technical fall in hand but had to take injury late, which cost him an escape point. Dutton, who made his Michigan debut last Friday at Illinois (Jan. 17), improved to 2-0 in the Wolverine lineup. Michigan came out of the intermission break with a win from fifth-year senior Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS) at 165 pounds. The Wolverine senior, ranked seventh, scored on two first-period takedowns and rode for 2:38 en route to a 7-5 decision over Brandon Kingsley. The Gophers won three straight matches at the upperweights, earning bonus points at 174 and 197 pounds, to pull within two points on the scoreboard and set up the Coon-Nelson finale at heavyweight. The Wolverines (7-2, 3-0 Big Ten) will return to competition next Friday (Jan. 31), hosting intrastate rival Michigan State at 7 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. Tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office. Results: 125 -- Conor Youtsey (U-M) dec. Sam Brancale, 12-6 U-M, 3-0 133 -- #9 David Thorn (UMN) dec. LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- A.J. Schopp and Vince Pickett recorded falls to lead Edinboro to a 37-3 win at Lock Haven on Saturday night in an Eastern Wrestling League match. It marked the 12th straight win for the Fighting Scots over the Bald Eagles. The victory boosted the Fighting Scots to 5-3 overall and 3-0 in the EWL, while Lock Haven is now 2-8 and 0-3, respectively. All told, the Fighting Scots picked up bonus points in five matches, with Dave Habat winning by technical fall and Kasey Burnett-Davis and Ernest James picking up major decisions. Kory Mines got the match underway with a 4-2 decision over Kaleb LeMaire at 125 lbs. The redshirt junior had the lone takedown of the match just 30 seconds in. LeMaire would knot the match at 2-2 with escapes in the first and second periods, but Mines would add an escape points in the third period and had 1:14 in riding time. Top-ranked Mitchell Port faced a stern challenge from Lock Haven's Dan Neff at 141 lbs. Port remained undefeated at 18-0 with a 4-1 decision over Neff, who fell to 21-7. Following a scoreless first period, Ports gained a 1-0 lead with a second period escape. With 15 seconds left in the period he made it 3-0 with a takedown. Neff picked up an escape point with 48 seconds remaining in the third period, but Port owned 1:12 in riding time for the win. Dave Habat boosted Edinboro's lead to 17-0 with an 18-3 technical fall at 7:00 over Mac Maldarelli at 149 lbs. Ranked 16th by InterMat and 18th by Amateur Wrestling News, Habat moved to 19-4 with the victory. He would lead 5-0 after one thanks to a takedown and three near fall points, and boosted the lead to 8-1 after two periods with an escape and takedown. In the third, Habat added three takedowns and three back points. Johnny Greisheimer, ranked 16th by Amateur Wrestling News and 17th by InterMat, posted his seventh win in his last eight bouts with an 8-2 decision over Billy Randt at 157 lbs. He finished with three takedowns while improving to 17-7. Kasey Burnett-Davis returned to the lineup at 165 lbs. and gave Edinboro a 24-0 win with a 10-2 major decision over Elias Biddle. The redshirt junior improved to 9-5 after trailing 1-0 early in the second period. A takedown and two near fall points made it 4-1 after two periods. He would add a similar combination in the third period. Lock Haven picked up its lone win in the evening at 174 lbs., as Dylan Caprio won a 3-2 decision over Patrick Jennings (7-8). Jennings used a second period reversal to grab a 2-0 lead, but Caprio would escape, then in the third period he used his own reversal for the winning points. Vic Avery, who has battled an ankle injury throughout the year, returned at 184 lbs. after missing last weekend's Virginia Duals. He faced a formidable opponent in Fred Garcia, who came in at 19-5. Avery, ranked 13th by Amateur Wrestling News and 15th by InterMat, registered a quick takedown in the match. It would prove to be the only one. Garcia's escape made it 2-1 after one, and he tied the with a quick escape to start the second. Starting down to begin the third period, Avery would escape 30 seconds in for the winning points. The redshirt sophomore is now 8-2. Pickett had a rough weekend at the Virginia Duals, losing all three of his matches. He boosted his record to 11-8 with his third fall, the end coming at 5:49 in his match against Jeff Pickel at 197 lbs. He led 11-0 when he finished the match. Ernest James, ranked 17th by Amateur Wrestling News and 19th by InterMat, finished off the big night with an 11-09 major decision over Cody Mason at heavyweight. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Three Black Knights posted bonus-point victories to help the Army wrestling team earn a 26-10 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) win over American on Saturday evening at Bender Arena. With the win, the Black Knights improve to 5-3 overall and 4-3 in the league, while the Eagles slip to 4-4 and 3-2. Seniors Paul Hancock (157 pounds) and Tyler Rauenzahn (141) and junior Chandler Smith (165) each notched bonus-point wins, with Rauenzahn pinning his opponent and Hancock and Smith each winning by major decision. The match began with the 174-pounds bout, where sophomore Brian Harvey tallied a 4-0 decision over American's Keithen Cast to give Army an early 3-0 advantage. The Black Knights extended their lead to 9-0 after senior Ryan Tompkins (184) won 7-2 and sophomore Bryce Barnes (197) defeated Daniel Mitchell, who stands ninth at 197 pounds in Intermat's national poll, by a count of 2-1. Junior Stephen Snyder fell by major decision in the heavyweight match before 11th-ranked David Terao used a 12-5 decision over junior Hunter Wood to bring the Eagles back to a two-point deficit at 9-7. In the 133-pound match, Black Knight freshman Logan Everett topped Esteban Gomez-Rivera, 5-4, to give his team a 12-7 cushion before Rauenzahn's pin made the score 18-7 with three bouts remaining. American's Mark Cirello won a decision over freshman Mark Marchetti at 149 pounds, but Army closed the match with consecutive major decisions, as Hancock and Smith topped their counterparts 8-0 and 12-4, respectively. The Black Knights are back in action on Sunday, Jan. 26, when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa., where they will face Penn at 1 p.m. and Drexel at 7 p.m. Match Notes: Army improves to 4-1 all-time against American ... ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The 2014 Alliance Top Gun Wrestling Tournament had as deep and balanced a field as has been assembled in the history of the event. Three nationally ranked teams were in attendance. Headed into Friday night's quarterfinal round, it was looking like all three teams would be fighting for the title until tournament's end. However, 1-8 record in that round for No. 29 Claymont would end their hopes. On the other hand, both No. 4 Clovis (Calif.) and No. 8 Massillon Perry advanced seven wrestlers each to the semifinals. Headed into day two competition on Saturday, the Cougars from almost 3,000 miles away held a 1.5 point lead, as they advanced all 14 wrestlers, while the Panthers had only 12. Early in Day 2, the overwhelming Clovis depth would rear its head, as the Cougars placed twelve wrestlers and took an 11.5 point lead headed into the semifinal round. Massillon Perry placed only two wrestlers in addition to those in the semifinals. However, the semifinal round yielded a major swing, as the Panthers would exit that round with approximately a ten point lead. Massillon Perry was 6-1 in semifinals and 2-0 in consolation, while Clovis went 4-3 in semifinals and 4-1 in consolation. However, depth came into play in the consolation semifinal round when Clovis would go 5-2 (as opposed to Massillon Perry's 2-1). As a result, the Cougars led by 12 entering the medal matches. Clovis freshman Justin Mejia won the title at 106 pounds (Photo/Tony Rotundo, WrestlersAreWarriors.com)Upsets in the first two championship bouts of the evening would all but seal the Top Gun team championship to Clovis. First, at 106 pounds, No. 11 Justin Mejia (Clovis) defeated No. 2 Tyler Warner (Claymont), 7-6. The score was closer than the match, as Mejia scored a takedown and near falls in the first period and then had a third period takedown to take a 7-2 lead with about a minute left. Warner would cut into that lead with an escape, a very late takedown, and a second stall on Mejia. This weekend marked a return to competition for No. 3 Jose Rodriguez (Massillon Perry) at 113 pounds, after sustaining an injury in the first round at the Walsh Jesuit Ironman. He advanced to the finals with two majors, a technical fall, and a pin. In the championship bout he faced No. 19 Hayden Lee (Marysville), who reached the final with three pins and a technical fall. Rodriguez had beaten Lee 6-3 during the first day of competition at the Super 32 Challenge. However, on this occasion, Lee would score a takedown at the edge of the mat during the first period, and get a second period escape. That would be enough for a 3-0 victory, as Rodriguez was unable to finish any of his attacks during the last two periods. With that tournament performance, Lee was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. By that point, Clovis had taken an 18 point lead in the team race, and it was a margin that could not be overcome. However, that is not to say Massillon Perry was not valiant in their efforts. The Panthers won four of their five remaining championship bouts. David Bavery scored an 8-3 dec. over Khristian Olivas (Clovis) at 126 pounds, rallying back from giving up a match-opening takedown; No. 15 Casey Sparkman beat Jeff Hojnacki (CVCA) by 15-5 major dec. at 152; No. 12 Tony Dailey became a repeat champion at the Top Gun with a 20-8 major dec. over Cody Pollitt (Olentangy) at 160, even though the first period was scoreless; and Isaac Bast scored the winning points late in the third period in a 3-2 victory over Russell Miller (Miami Trace) at 170. Wins in consolation medal bouts from Josh Hokit for third at 160 and Brody Brand for fifth at 170 assured Clovis would clinch the tournament, as the Cougars led by two (289-287) after the 170-pound weight class, which was Massillon Perry's last match of the evening. Clovis would add to that margin with pins in third place bouts from A.J. Nevills (182) and Matt Weiss (220), which gave the Cougars 33 pins on the tournament (Massillon Perry had 30). No. 1 in the nation Nick Nevills capped the tournament with a 12-3 major dec. over Logan Sharp (West Branch) at 28 pounds. Nevills had three first period pins and two major dec.s in cutting through the field. In addition to the four titles by Massillon Perry, and the two titles for Clovis, two other teams had multiple weight class champions. Joining Hayden Lee as a champion for Marysville was Austin Pfarr, who won the 220-pound weight class with a 4-3 victory over Alex Woicehovich (Nordonia) in a battle of state placers. Pfarr scored a takedown in the second and reversal in the third to counteract three escapes from Woicehovich. Akron SVSM had a pair of champions in Ryan Skonieczny (138) and Aaron Adkins (182). Skonieczny, a three-time state placer and returning state runner-up, upended Nick Steed (Massillon Perry) 4-3 in the final. Skonieczny scored an escape and takedown to take a 3-1 lead in the third period, from which Steed responded with a match-tying reversal. However, Skonieczny scored an escape to take the final lead, and Steed was unable to counter with a meaningful attack to rally back. Defending state champ Adkins scored his needed points with a first period takedown and second period escape in a 3-2 victory over returning Top Gun champion Nate Hall (Olentangy). Hall did respond with a third period takedown, but it fell into the too little, too late bucket. One of the most impressive tournaments was had by freshman Corey Shie (Cincinnati LaSalle), champion of the 120-pound weight class. Shie opened the tournament with a pin and technical fall, before getting a second pin in a Friday night quarterfinal victory over defending Top Gun champion Dustin Warner (Claymont); Warner entered the event ranked No. 12 nationally at 113 pounds. The barrage continued with a 15-0 technical fall victory in the semifinal round. Despite giving up an early takedown against fellow Cadet National freestyle All-American Alex Mackall (Walsh Jesuit), Shie would respond with much aplomb in the second period. After two escapes and a takedown, with a Mackall reversal in there too, Shie held a 5-4 lead and was able to hit a barrel roll to take Mackall to his back. That made it 9-4 after two periods, and the wrestlers traded reversals in the third. As a result, Shie won the match 11-6. The evening's most exciting ending came in the 132-pound final, which quite frankly was a snooze fest until the last 15 seconds of the bout. With the score tied 1-1, returning state placer Nick Boggs (Painesville Riverside) scored the go-ahead takedown at the edge of the mat. Even though two-time state placer Isaiah Hokit (Clovis, Calif.) would be let loose with an escape, it was a 3-2 Boggs win. Rounding out the weight class champions were returning state runner-up Zac Carson (Uniontown Lake), who beat two-time state placer Taleb Rahmani (Marysville) 4-3 in a battle of juniors; and state placer Tyler McClellan (CVCA), who beat Robert West (Trinity, Pa.) 3-2 at 195 pounds. Team Standings: (1) No. 4 Clovis (Calif.) 302, (2) No. 8 Massillon Perry 287, (3) No. 29 Claymont 189.5, (4) Uniontown Lake 129.5 (5) Sandusky Perkins 125, (6) Akron SVSM 124.5, (7) Marysville 124, (8) Fort LeBoeuf (Pa.) 116.5, (9) Delaware Hayes 115, (10) Olentangy 106 Finals Results: 106: No. 11 Justin Mejia (Clovis, Calif.) dec. MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Before a record-setting home crowd, No. 2-ranked Concordia proved its win over perennial national power Augsburg on Sunday was no fluke as they won eight individual matches against the Auggies and rolled to a 26-6 victory. The record-breaking crowd got to see a record-setting performance by the Cobbers as Concordia beat the Auggies at home for the first time in program history. CC beat Augsburg 21-15 last weekend at the National Duals in Des Moines, Iowa and did that one better by posting a 20-point victory. "It was a great team win," commented Concordia head coach Matt Nagel. "All 10 wrestlers stepped up and showed the work ethic they have put up in the room during practice. It was fun to see the hard work the team showed in practice this week pay off in the dual meet." Concordia, who is ranked second in the nation in the latest NWCA Division III poll, ups its dual-meet record to 9-2 on the year. Augsburg falls for the third straight time and is now 5-3 on the season. Cobber senior Kyle LeDuc set the tone for the entire match in the very first individual bout. After the coaches decided to draw for the start weight, LeDuc stepped on the mat and dominated his match at 157 and came away with a 10-0 major decision at 157. That would start a string of four consecutive wins to start the dual for the Cobbers. LeDuc, who is ranked 10th in the nation at 157, improved his season record to 19-7. Brandon Haluptzok, Sebastian Gardner and Chris Harrison followed LeDuc with wins. Haluptzok's win at 165 was one of the two key wins for the Cobbers. It was only the fifth match of the year for Haluptzok who spent the first semester studying in Australia. Haluptzok avenged a 4-1 loss to Justin Bowland six days ago and came up with a 3-1 overtime win. Gardner posted the only other "bonus point" victory when he scored an 11-2 win at 174. He nearly pinned his opponent but came away with the nine-point victory after beating Tyrell Martin in overtime last Sunday. Harrison completed the four-match win streak to open the meet by recording an 11-9 win at 184. His win gave the Cobbers a 14-0 lead. It was Harrison's 18th win of the year and improved his overall record to 18-5. Concordia dropped the next two matches but then sophomore Gabe Foltz put the crowd on its feet by scoring a 3-2 win over No.2-ranked Mike Fuenffinger. Fuenffinger entered the match with a 16-1 overall record with his only loss coming at the hands of Dylan Peters from Northern Iowa who is currently ranked seventh in NCAA Division I. Foltz battled through the entire three periods and was able to get an escape in the third period to earn the win. "I thought I could come up with the win," said Foltz. "Wrestling him in the duals (National Duals) gave me confidence. "It's great to come out of nowhere and get the win." Jacoby Bergeron, Yonas Gebreab and Jake Long finished off the match by posting wins at 133, 141 and 149. Bergeron entered the dual ranked third in the nation and had to battle until the final period to finally come up with a 6-2 win. He is now 19-6 this season. Gebreab also won his bout in the final period. He earned a 3-1 victory at 141 and is 19-10 for the year. Long almost ended the match in style as he had his opponent on his back in the first 30 seconds of his bout at 149. Long couldn't come up with the pin fall but never trailed in the match and got a 9-6 victory. He joined LeDuc and Bergeron in the 19-win club and is now 19-7. The Cobbers will stay at home and host Jamestown in a dual meet on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. Results: 125 – Gabe Foltz (CC) dec. #2 Mike Fuenffinger (AC); 3-2 (Concordia 17-6) 133 – #3 Jacoby Bergeron (CC) dec. TEMPE, Ariz. -- Same state, different day, different script. A day after falling to Grand Canyon University in a fashion that head wrestling coach Ben Cherrington could only describe as disappointing, Northern Colorado rebounded in a big way to defeat Arizona State Saturday, 24-15. "We had a great dual tonight," Cherrington said about the win against ASU. "They went out there, they believed in each other and they put together a solid team effort. And we won a dual that we weren't expected to win. That's what takes to you to the next level. As a coach, I'm as excited as I've ever been. Anytime you get a win like this, it's big for the program." In what turned out to be a drama-filled and closely contested dual, the last two matches were what decided it. Arizona State led 16-15 heading into the 197-pound match, where Northern Colorado's Cole Briegel (Burlington) won by flagrant default following an illegal hit from ASU's Wesley Moore. The disqualification gave the Bears six team points and docked a point from the Sun Devils' total, making the score 21-15. Heavyweight Henry Chirino (Brandon, Fla.) then capped the dual with a 2-1 decision against Chace Eskam for the final 24-15 margin. "Briegel had an interesting match. The kid he was wrestling kind of lost his cool and ended up getting kicked out of the match, which obviously helped, but Cole was right there in the match when it happened," Cherrington said. "Henry then went out and did what Henry does. He wrestled solid, wrestled his match and took care of business." Northern Colorado's Trey Andrews, wrestling about three hours away from his hometown of Safford, Ariz., got the Bears on the board first by recording a 4-3 decision over Ares Carpio at 125 pounds. This was Andrews' second win over Carpio this season after having beaten him via pin in two minutes, 42 seconds at the Southern Scuffle on Jan. 1. Andrews now has 16 wins this season. Sonny Espinoza (Pueblo) and Nick Adams (Monument) lost decisions 133 and 141 pounds, respectively, but 149-pounder Beau Roberts (Boise) tied the dual for the Bears with a 4-0 shutout of Preston McCalmon. "Sonny wrestled a very tough match -- probably his best performance. Even though he didn't get the W, that was his the best performance he's had in a couple months," Cherrington said. "Roberts had a positive match. That's his first win since we were out in Bloomington, and he went out and handled the kid. He got the first takedown and controlled the match the rest of the time." At 157 pounds, Mitchell Polkowske (LaJara) then picked up bonus points for the Bears with a pin of Joel Smith in 2:36, and Charlie McMartin (Boise) followed it with a 15-10 decision over James Brundage. "Mitchell just put the guy on his back and pinned him, and that's what we need from our best guys. We need them to score bonus points like that," Cherrington said. "Charlie probably had the most exciting match of the night. His guy came out and took Charlie down twice and thought he was coasting, and Charlie came back and nailed him with a big double-leg takedown and stayed wrestling hard after that, in what ended up being a big, big win for us in the dual." Josh Van Tine (Broomfield) and Nick Bayer (Maple Valley, Wash.) lost by fall and major decision, respectively, allowing the Sun Devils to take their final lead at 16-15. The Bears now return to Greeley to host their first home dual of 2014, a tilt with Cal Poly at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26. Results: 125 – Trey Andrews (UNC) def. LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Iowa wrestling team won seven of 10 bouts to defeat Nebraska, 22-9, on Saturday at the Devaney Center. The win was Iowa's seventh straight in the series. Thomas Gilman, Tony Ramos, and Josh Dziewa spotted Iowa a 10-0 lead with two wins and a major decision, but Nebraska kept things close with three wins in matches that featured ranked opponents. It was a stretch that got UI head coach Tom Brands' attention. "Those three matches - 149, 157, 174 - the whole country, or anyone paying attention to this dual meet, is talking about it, and we went 0-for-3," said Brands. "We won seven matches. I do not feel like we won seven matches. We left two major decisions off the board, but you have to keep moving forward." Gilman used a point for riding time to defeat No. 9 Tim Lambert, 2-1, at 125. Ramos scored five takedowns to record his team-best fifth major decision, 15-4, at 133, and Dziewa used two takedowns and two near-fall points to win 9-2 at 141. Nebraska (8-1, 2-1) closed to within 10-6 before intermission with a pair of wins at 149 and 157. Fifth-ranked Jake Sueflohn defeated No. 13 Brody Grothus, 5-2, at 149, and third-ranked James Green ended Derek St. John's 27-match win streak with a 9-7 win at 157. Nick Moore used three takedowns to win 8-2 at 165, but fourth-ranked Robert Kokesh closed the gap with a 7-3 win over No. 6 Mike Evans at 174. After Nebraska pulled to within 13-9, freshman Sammy Brooks swung the momentum back toward the Hawkeyes when he finished a single-leg with 17 seconds into the sudden-victory period to defeat No. 11 T.J. Dudley, 6-4, at 184. "We knew if I kept the pressure on him his level would go down, so I just tried to keep my pace as high as I could, even if I wasn't feeling good," said Brooks. "You just push through and wrestle hard." Brooks wasn't able to finish a number of shots in the first and second periods, but eventually caught Dudley on the edge and grabbed a 4-3 lead with 37 seconds left in the third. Dudley escaped to force overtime, but Brooks went right back to the leg, ending the match and earning his second straight win over a rated opponent. "He is an athlete," said Brooks. "He can explode out and (avoid) the takedown, so you have to get ready. Ideally you don't even let that happen. You pick him up and put him down hard and get the takedown, but in a match like this it's going to take more than one attempt." Brooks' win extended Iowa's lead to 16-9, and Nathan Burak (197) and Bobby Telford (285) closed with a pair of decisions for the final 22-9 score. Third-ranked Iowa (11-1, 4-0) returns to the mat Saturday, Jan. 25 when No. 2 Minnesota visits Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Tickets are available through the UI Athletic Ticket Office over the phone at 1-800-IA-HAWKS or online at hawkeyesports.com. The dual will be televised on BTN. "We have to get ready again. We have one dual this week and one dual meet the next week, and we have to put a lineup out there that is going to score," added Brands. "We have to use the whole clock. The whole seven minutes." Notes: Attendance was 3,946... Iowa won its seventh straight in the series... Thomas Gilman improved to 5-1 against ranked opponents... Ramos earned his fifth major decision of the season... St. John's winning streak was stopped at 27, a career long... Sammy Brooks won his third in a row and second straight against ranked opponents. LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell wrestling team posted a 2-0 record Saturday with wins over Brown and Clarion in Davis Gym. Both matches were in doubt entering the heavyweight bout, but Joe Stolfi posted pins in both matches to propel the Bison to the two comeback victories. Paul Petrov, Rustin Barrick and Tyler Lyster were also undefeated on the day. Bucknell opened the day with a 22-19 victory over Brown with back-to-back pins by Lyster and Stolfi at 197 and 285 erasing a 19-10 deficit. The Bison then trailed 18-12 in the nightcap against Clarion, but decisions by Rory Bonner and Lyster evened the score and then Stolfi recorded his 15th pin of the season to clinch the six-point victory for Bucknell (5-6, 2-0 EIWA). Clarion (6-10) and Brown also wrestled in between the two Bucknell matches and the Golden Eagles posted a 24-16 win against the Bears. The Bison had 10 individual victories on Saturday and five of them were by pin. Petrov added another bonus-point win with a major decision to open the day against Brown. Despite Petrov’s early victory, the Bison trailed Brown 19-10 with just two bouts to go. After a scoreless first period, Lyster scored five quick points on a reversal and a near fall midway through the second period. He followed immediately with a pin, his third of the season. Stolfi then took to the mat knowing a decision would tie the score, but he pinned Ryder Cavey in 2:34 after building a 4-1 advantage. Connor Lapresi and Barrick also posted wins by decision against Brown, which fell to 0-5, 0-4 EIWA. A comeback by the heavier weights was again needed in the nightcap as the Bison won four of the final bouts. They nearly won all five as 174-pounder Joey Krulock battled back from a 5-0 second-period deficit to force overtime against Ryan Darch, but Darch recorded a takedown in the first 20 seconds of the overtime period to give the Golden Eagles an 18-12 advantage. Rory Bonner got the comeback started for Bucknell as he won the 184-pound bout by a 6-1 score. He held a 2-1 lead at the end of the second period, but outscored Dustin Conti 4-0 over the final two minutes of wrestling. Lyster then captured his 13th win of the season with an easy 7-0 decision over Daniel Sutherland after a scoreless first period. Stolfi then followed with a second-period pin of Even Daley after building a 9-0 lead. It was Stolfi’s 15th pin in his 19 victories this season. He ranks second in the nation in wins by fall and is now tied for fourth on the program’s single-season pins list and seventh on the career ledger (24). Bucknell, which has won three matches in a row for the first time since February 2011, will continue its weekend homestand Sunday with a 2 p.m. match against EIWA foe Penn. The match will air live and free of charge on Bison Vision on the Patriot League Network. Bucknell 22, Brown 19 125: Paul Petrov (Bu) maj. dec. ITHACA, N.Y. -- With four nationally ranked starters sitting out among the first five spots in the lineup, few would have blamed Cornell head coach Rob Koll if he had trepidation about what the halftime score might look like in Saturday afternoon's Ivy League-opening dual against Harvard. The Big Red won three of those matches and entered the break with a 16-3 lead to set his mind at ease. In the end, Cornell coasted with its 59th consecutive Ivy League dual match win with a 33-6 triumph over the Crimson at the Friedman Wrestling Center. Without the services of nationally-ranked Nahshon Garrett (125), Mark Grey (133), Chris Villalonga (149) and Brian Realbuto (149), the Big Red was able to showcase its impressive depth. Bricker Dixon took a forfeit at 125 pounds, but even without it, the Big Red would have had a 10-3 edge. Harvard backup Ryan Osleeb won a 7-0 decision over Cornell's backup, Logan David, at 133 pounds to quickly get the Crimson back into the dual, but that was the lone highlight for the visitors. Mike Nevinger earned a dominant 1-0 decision win over Harvard's Todd Preston. Nevinger paced the match throughout and used an escape quickly in the third period to improve to 5-1 on the season. Without Villalonga, Conner David dominated his opponent at 149 pounds, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after the first period and never looking back. David used a late takedown to get Nicholas Stager on his back for three near-fall points and nearly a pin before the final horn. Taylor Simaz wrestled a great first two periods to earn a decision over former New York state champ Tyler Grimaldi, taking a 5-0 lead into the final period and holding on for a 10-5 victory to send the Big Red into the break leading 16-3. The second half of the dual was more of the same, as Dylan Palacio all but clinched the victory with a first period pin over Colton Peppelman, the younger brother of Palacio's teammate and training partner Marshall Peppelman. He took down Peppelman twice in the first 90 seconds and then was ableto get him to his back to earn the pin at 2:03. Duke Pickett earned a hard-fought 3-1 overtime decision at 174 pounds over Eric Morris, earning a takedown less than 15 seconds into the sudden victory period after both wrestlers earned an escape. Freshman Gabe Dean continued his dominant wrestling, knocking around Harvard senior Cameron Croy en route to a 21-5 tech fall in the third period. He nearly earned pins in the first and third periods, but overwhelmed his opponent with seven takedowns and a pair of three-point nearfalls. The Big Red lost at 197 pounds as James Fox earned a late takedown in the second and reversed Jace Bennett in the third to earn an 8-4 triumph. LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- 'The Four Hundred' is a 19th century term for the most exclusive or affluent social clique in a particular place. On Friday night, Rider’s Gary Taylor joined a most exclusive group of wrestling coaches with his 400th victory. “There are only a handful of coaches EVER who are above that number in the entire history of college wrestling,” said associate head coach John Hangey. “This is extremely significant. It puts him in a very exclusive club, and he deserves to be there.” The Broncs won six of the 10 bouts to win an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet with Bloomsburg Friday night. “Our kids just flat-out wrestled tough against a good team in honor of everything Coach Taylor has done for this university,” Hangey said. “You couldn’t have scripted it any better.” “We beat a very good team tonight,” said Taylor, who with the victory became just the second active wrestling coach to compile 400 wins at a Division I program. “I have a lot of respect for Bloomsburg. Our kids fought hard tonight and beat some good kids.” Taylor is now 400-226-4. University of Minnesota head coach Jay Robinson is the only active head coach to have 400 wins all at a Division I program with 411. For Rider (10-5, 4-1 EWL), ranked third in the EWL, sophomore Conor Brennan (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) upset 20-match winner Mike Dessino 3-2 with a late third period take down to give the Broncs a 17-9 lead. Sophomore Curt Delia (Mullica Hill, NJ/Delsea) won by tech fall to give Rider an 11-6 lead. Delia was the EWL Wrestler of the Week last week and is now 10-5 in dual meets. Rider freshman Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) won in an upset to give Rider a 14-6 lead. Junior Clint Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) won to give the Broncs a 20-9 lead. “Coach Taylor has probably forgotten more wrestling than what any other coach will ever know,” said Morrison, who has known coach Taylor for most of his life being that his father, uncle and two older brothers all wrestled for him at Rider. “I have been able to learn so much from him. We all have. He knows so much and it is so cool to have that knowledge in the wrestling room.” Morrison had been out of the line up due to injuries but was cleared recently. “I was itching to get back,” Morison said, “and it meant a great deal to me to be a part of this win for Coach Taylor.” Sophomore Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) won to give Rider a 3-0 lead. Deutsch, who is ranked 16th in the nation at 125.won for the eighth straight time and improved to 20-4 overall, 14-1 in duals and 4-1 in the EWL. Junior Chuck Zeisloft (Woodbury Heights, N.J./Gateway) improved to 16-10 with a victory at 133 for a 6-0 Rider lead. For Bloomsburg (4-5, 1-1 EWL), ranked second in the EWL behind #14 Edinboro,165 Josh Veltre, ranked 15th in the nation, won a close match with senior Ramon Santiago (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville) to cut the lead to 14-9. Huskie 197 Richard Perry, ranked fourth in the nation, won a major decision. Heavyweight Justin Grant, ranked 14th in the nation, won for the final score. Rider and Bloomsburg have now met 14 times, with Rider winning eight. All eight under Coach Taylor. A seven-time Conference Coach of the Year, Taylor has led Rider to 13 conference titles, with 96 individual conference champions, 152 NCAA qualifiers and 13 All-Americans. And now 400 victories. “I told them not to get caught up in that,” Taylor said. “These wrestlers are fighting for seeding in the conference and national championships. What was important was for them to handle their individual jobs. They wrestled their heart out and ended up winning the match. I’m very proud of them.” And they are of Coach Taylor. “Don’t get me wrong, it is nice getting the 400th win,” Taylor said. “It’s an accomplishment and I’m excited by it. I will probably look back on it more in the future.” In the immediate future Rider travels to Boston University January 25. Look for number 401. Results: 125 – Rob Deutsch-R dec. YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Northern Illinois University wrestling team scored their first Mid-American Conference win of the season Friday night in Ypsilanti, Mich., with a convincing 24-9 win against Eastern Michigan. The Huskies (5-6, 1-3 MAC) won seven of the 10 matches against the Eagles (8-4, 1-1 MAC), including big wins by Nick Harrison and Shawn Scott. "I'm really proud of our effort and fire tonight," said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. "We competed and scrapped for everything. That's the key to success. When we compete like that, good things happen." NIU was able to get off to a blazing fast start courtesy of Harrison. Facing Jared Germaine - the 15th-ranked 125-pounder in the nation - the redshirt sophomore from Stillman Valley, Ill., pulled one of the biggest upsets of the year, pinning Germaine with 38 seconds left in the first period to stake out the Huskies to a 6-0 lead. "Nick Harrison was a huge fire starter for us tonight with a pin over an undefeated opponent," Ludwig said. "He went out there to fight for everything and got rewarded." After the Eagles cut the lead in half with a 14-8 decision at 133, Tyler Argue pushed the lead back to six with a 9-4 win at 141 against Nick Barber. Rob Jillard pulled out a tight 4-2 win at 149 against Michael Shaw, putting the Huskies in control with a 12-3 edge. EMU again looked to stage a comeback with a win at 157. However, Shaun'Qae McMurtry closed the door quickly with a 9-5 victory against Dean Vettese at 165, while Matt Mougin went into overtime to pull out a 6-4 win against Jacob Davis at 174 and make it an 18-9 NIU lead. Needing wins in each of the final three matches, the Eagles got a tight 3-2 win at 184 to move within 18-9. Yet, Michigan native Shawn Scott scored one of his biggest wins of the season with a 7-5 overtime win against 2013 NCAA qualifier Nick Whitenburg at 197. Facing a two-point deficit entering the third period, the Holly, Mich., native got a last-minute takedown to force overtime, then got a quick takedown to take the win. Not only did Scott pad his postseason resume, but his triumph also clinched the dual win with the Huskies. In the heavyweight finale, Jared Torrence earned a 6-4 decision against Khodar Hoballah to account for the final points. The Huskies make a quick turnaround in two days, as they head to Ohio Sunday to face Ashland and #22 Purdue in the 2014 Wendy's Duals. The action starts at 11 a.m. CT against the host Eagles, while NIU faces the nationally-ranked Boilermakers at 1 p.m. CT. Mount Pleasant, Mich. -- It is not often that a 125 pounder gets the chance to secure a victory for his team. Redshirt freshman Corey Keener took advantage of the rare opportunity Friday night, scoring a key takedown 40 seconds into sudden victory to secure a key Mid-American Conference win for Central Michigan over preseason conference favorite No. 25 Ohio, 19-15. Keener and Kevon Powell were all square through regulation, but it was Keener who was finally able to finish one of his shots, getting in on a double-leg attempt and eventually earning the advantage to score a two-point takedown and earn a 3-1 decision. The redshirt freshman ranked 12th in the country at 125 pounds twice had Powell locked in on shots earlier in the match, but was unable to finish until the sudden victory. Keener also was able to erase Powell's riding-time advantage in the third period before an optional escape evened the match, 1-1. Senior Joe Roth opened the night for the Chippewas (7-5, 3-1 MAC) with a dominant 12-2 major decision over Kagan Squire. Roth scored an early takedown in the first period and scored pair of back points after his second takedown in the second period. Two more takedowns and over two minutes of riding time earned Roth his 13th victory of the season, moving him 11 shy of 100 for his career. CMU was able to extend the lead to 10-3 behind wins by No. 9 Zach Horan (141 pounds) and No. 20 Lucas Smith (157 pounds). Smith shutout Spartak Chino in a heated match between the two sophomores, but secured his 3-0 win and got the crowd on its' feet with a takedown with under 10 seconds left in the match. After a loss by redshirt freshman Nick Becker at 165 pounds that pulled the Bobcats (5-2, 1-2 MAC) within four, 10-6, junior Mike Ottinger extended the lead back to seven, 13-6, by defeating defending MAC champ and 2013 All-American No. 7 Cody Walters. Ottinger pushed the pace throughout the entire match, while Walters stayed patient and waited for the right opportunity to attack. The strategy didn't pay off for Walters however as he was called for stalling for a second time in the third period, allowing Ottinger to claim a 2-1 decision. Junior Craig Kelliher posted a 4-0 decision over Ryan Garringer at 184 pounds to extend the Chippewas' lead to 16-6, but back-to-back wins by ranked Bobcats, including a pin by No. 11 heavyweight Jeremy Johnson, forced Keener to pull off the heroics. The Chippewas will look for their second-straight win over a ranked opponent on Sunday when they host No. 7 Missouri. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team took advantage of a strong start, winning three of the first four bouts, to knock off No. 11 Illinois, 19-13, in its first true road dual of the season on Friday evening (Jan. 17) at Huff Hall. The Wolverines won six individual matches and earned a pair of bonus victories. Illinois earned a bonus point of its own with a major decision at 174 pounds -- the dual's opening weight class -- but the Wolverines rebounded with three straight wins at the upperweights. Freshman Domenic Abounader (Gates Mills, Ohio/St. Edward HS) initiated the Wolverine surge at 184 pounds, using a late second-period takedown to edge Nikko Reyes, 3-1. After a scoreless first period, Abounader earned a quick escape in the second and scored on a single leg -- sealed with a hard tomahawk finish -- in the waning seconds of the frame. Reyes escaped in the third but could not penetrate Abounader's defense as the Wolverine rookie picked up his second straight Big Ten dual win of the season. Senior/junior Chris Heald (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS) also took advantage of a strong second period to break open his 197-pound match against Jeff Koepke, scoring on a quick escape and late single-leg takedown -- with cradle finish -- before adding two more takedowns in the third to ice a 7-4 decision. Freshman heavyweight Adam Coon (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville HS) was forced to rally after giving up the initial takedown -- just the fourth he has allowed this season -- against Chris Lopez, but he did so in commanding fashion to roll to a 12-3 major decision. After giving up a contested single leg early in the first, he escaped and quickly shot in on a single leg, driving Lopez to his back for five points. He rode out the second period and scored on two counter takedowns to earn the bonus point and improve to 22-0 on the season. Illinois won back-to-back matches at 125 and 133 pounds, including a narrow 2-1 decision on a first-period illegal hold call from defending NCAA champion Jesse Delgado in the former bout. The 125-pound match also cost U-M a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Wolverines again surged ahead with consecutive wins at 141 and 149 pounds. Senior/junior Steve Dutton (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point HS) made his Michigan debut in the former, cruising to a 14-0 major decision over Dominic Olivieri on two takedowns, seven back points and 4:44 riding-time advantage. Fifth-year senior Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) followed with a strong 8-4 decision over 19th-ranked Caleb Ervin, rallying from an early deficit with a two-point tilt in the second and a takedown off an arm drag early in the third. The Fighting Illini claimed a tossup match at 157 pounds, where 14th-ranked Zac Brunson used a second-period rideout to earn a 2-0 decision over 15th-ranked freshman Brian Murphy (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North HS), to narrow the team score, but fifth-year senior Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS) iced it for Michigan, taking advantage of a quick start to knock off 12th-ranked Jackson Morse, 7-3. Yates, ranked seventh, scored on a pair of high-crotch takedowns in the first period and added another off a second-period front headlock. The Wolverines will return home to host No. 3-ranked Minnesota on Sunday (Jan. 19). The match is slated for a 2 p.m. start at Cliff Keen Arena. AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State (7-2, 1-1 Big 12) defeated Rutgers (9-3, 6-0 EIWA) by a score of 22-13 Friday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones won seven of the 10 matches in tonight’s dual against the Scarlet Knights. Kyven Gadson started things off with a bang at the 197-pound weight class, working to a major decision over Rutgers’ Hayden Hrymack, 14-6. The No. 2-ranked grappler from Waterloo came out aggressive, scoring two takedowns in the first period and lifting himself to an early 5-2 lead. After a quiet second stanza, Gadson scored on a reversal to start the third and added two takedowns to seal the victory. The win extends Gadson’s dual win streak to 23 consecutive matches, dating back to last season. The redshirt-junior improves to 16-2 on the season and is 8-0 in dual competition. An active first period helped 2013 All-American Michael Moreno to his 19th victory of the season. Moreno converted an early takedown into a two-point nearfall and added a second takedown to take a 6-2 at the end of the first period. From there, the Urbandale native added a reversal in the second stanza and a takedown in the third to earn an 11-5 victory. Moreno’s 19 victories are good for second-most on the team (Lelund Weatherspoon, 21) and the win moves him to 6-2 in duals. At 174, neither No. 12 Tanner Weatherman nor Phillip Bakuckas (RU) could generate much offense in the first two periods and the score was knotted at 1-1 with 1 minute remaining in the third. The Huxley native then went on the offensive, scoring a takedown and adding a two-point nearfall with 48 seconds left in the match. Weatherman finished out the 6-1 decision and rode Bakuckas for the remainder of the period, picking up a bonus point with 1 minute of riding time. The redshirt-sophomore improves to 18-9 on the season, picking up his fifth dual victory of the year. At 125, redshirt-freshman Kyle Larson earned his third dual victory of the season, picking up a 3-2 decision over Sean McCabe. Both wrestlers were very active throughout the match, but neither found much success on offense. Larson scored a takedown with 33 seconds left in the third period to secure the victory. The West Des Moines, native improves to 14-7 on the season and is now 3-2 in dual matches. Luke Goettl brought the Cyclone faithful to their feet in the 149-pound bout. Goettl trailed Rutgers’ Ken Theobold 4-2 entering the final stanza, but knotted the score on a takedown 10 seconds into the period. After an escape from Theobold, Goettl scored a huge takedown with 34 seconds remaining and rode out his opponent to pick up the decision. The Clarkdale, Ariz., native is now 11-9 on the year and 5-4 in duals. Shayden Terukina picked up his first dual victory of the year, earning a 3-2 decision over Vinnie Dellefave. Terukina used a quick escape in the third period after starting in the bottom position and managed the rest of the period en route to his fourth victory of the season. The 184-pound bout wrapped up the night’s action, as Boaz Beard picked up a 6-2 decision over Dan Seidenberg. Beard earned the victory behind two reversals and racked up a colossal 5 minutes and 23 seconds of riding time. The Cyclones return to the mat next Friday, Jan. 24, as the team travels to Stillwater, Okla. to take on No. 5 Oklahoma State. Results: 197: No. 2 Kyven Gadson (ISU) mdec. BLACKSBURG -- Behind major decisions from Chris Penny and Ty Walz to end the night, the 16th-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling team dominated the University of North Carolina Friday evening inside Cassell Coliseum, winning nine of 10 matches en route to a 29-3 win over the Tar Heels. Joey Dance got things off to a good start as he pulled out a 4-2 sudden victory win over 16th-ranked Nathan Kraisser at 125 pounds. Dance got a reversal in the third period to take a 2-1 lead over the 2013 ACC runner-up, but Kraisser escaped late to send it to overtime. After 55 seconds of hand fighting, Dance shot in and got the double-leg takedown with three seconds left to pull out the exciting win. At 133 pounds, Dennis Gustafson used four takedowns to roll to a 10-3 win over Troy Heilmann to give Tech a 6-0 lead. UNC got on the board at 141 pounds as sixth-ranked Evan Henderson used a second-period escape and fended off Erik Spjut late from the neutral position to win 1-0 and cut the Tech lead in half. That would be UNC’s only win of the night as the Hokies won the last six bouts. At 149 pounds, 17th-ranked Zach Neibert used a two-point nearfall late in the third period and rode Christian Barber the entire third stanza for a riding time point to pick up a 4-0 win, his 75th career victory. Moving to 157 pounds, Sal Mastriani rallied from an early 4-2 deficit to pick up three takedowns late and beat Jake Crawford 8-6 to give the Hokies a 12-3 lead at the break. Chris Moon got a reversal and two back points on a nifty combination early in the second period and then wiggled out of a potential nearfall situation late to beat John Staudenmayer 4-3 at 165 pounds. Down 2-1 after a period at 174 pounds, John Dickson rode Scott Marmoll the entire second period, turning him for three points late in the stanza. In the third period, the senior reversed Marmoll and rode him for another 90 seconds to pick up the 7-2 win. Nick Vetterlein, ranked 16th at 184 pounds, took care of business with three takedowns of Alex Utley to pick up a 7-5 win. In the final two bouts, Penny rolled to a 14-3 major decision over Frank Abbondanza at 197 pounds with four takedowns and a nearfall combination and then Walz put on a takedown clinic against Bob Coe at heavyweight, using eight of them and nearfall points to pick up the 20-7 major decision. Tech (12-2, 1-1 ACC) will be back in action on Sunday, hosting the University of Maryland at 4 p.m. Five seniors - Dickson, Neibert, Penny, Spjut and Vetterlein - will be honored before the match.
