  1. Willie Saylor has mentioned he has heard this from several sources. It definitely has legs.
  2. I meant retire from coaching. If this was the reason he couldn't coach then that doesn't bode well for Spencer Lee as the next Iowa HC.
  3. Cael is only 44. I don't think he's retiring soon. The Brands are 55 though...
  4. He was the #1 seed last year and didn't come close to winning it despite making the finals. I don't see him getting a more favorable seed and draw than last year, unfortunately. Seems like a great kid though.
  5. 70% of their lineup next year could be transfers. The days of winning with homegrown Iowa talent are long gone... 133 Teske 141 Woods 149 Voinovich 157 Franek 184 Caliendo 197 Ferrari HWT Steveson Could be 8/10 if Joey Cruz can win the 125 starting spot. May not be unrealistic given Ayala's injury history.
  6. 125 Ayala dec Steen 3-0 133 Nagao dec Teske 3-3 141 Woods dec Bartlett 6-3 149 Van Ness dec Voinivich 6-6 157 Franek dec Haines 9-6 165 Kennedy dec Messenbtink 12-6 174 Starocci dec Brands 12-9 184 Truax dec Calliendo 12-12 197 AJ Ferrari dec Brooks 15-12 HWT Kerk dec Cass. 15-15 TIE. (If Steveson, Steveon MAJ Cass. 19-12 Iowa wins.)
  7. With the addition of All-Americans Jared Franek and Michael Caliendo, both from NDSU, Tom Brands is doing the right thing. For years he refused to "recruit over" his own guys but now he sees that the game has changed and it's all about stacking talent, like Cael and Penn State have been doing. It wasn't enough to land the 3 Ferraris, or to have guys like Siebrecht, Kennedy, Brands and Assad already on the team. They went after elite, proven AA level talent in Franek and Caliendo. Let the best man win the spot, regardless of incumbent status, blood relations or other accolades. By making this move the Brands have ensured a true challenger to Penn State next year. It will be an actual race at NCAAs in 2023-2024. Bravo, Tom.
  8. Zain is great but he has also lost some headscratchers. Chance is wrestling the best he ever has. Zain has never beaten someone as good as Burroughs in such convincing fashion either.
  9. Very impressive how he essentially beat the GOAT Burroughs 3-0. I think he has actually has potential to do better than Zain Retherford this year in international competition.
  10. How has Byrd graduated from college already as a redshirt sophomore?
  11. Spiral ride is by the new rule stalling. You cannot turn someone or pin them with a spiral ride. Same with a claw ride, side or front headlock...
  12. You can't turn someone with a power half if both boots are in though. You eventually have to take 1 or both boots out.
  13. So by rule, double boots has to be stalling...
  14. Anyone else find Ferrari throwing the Penn State hat on the ground disrespectful? I get that Penn State wasn't one of his final 3 schools, but I'm sure he had some contact with Penn State and the Penn State coaches. I think it would have been disrespectful if he threw a VT or Rutgers hat on the ground before putting on the Iowa hat. I know if he had gone to VT or Rutgers and had thrown an Iowa hat on the ground the Hawkeyes fans would be howling about it... Anyway, seems weird to pull that stunt with a team that wasn't even in his final 3.
  15. This is the most obvious choice: But this may make just as much sense:
  16. As predicted by me, Iowa adds a 2nd Ferrari to its garage tonight. Make room for A.J.!
  17. If Iowa lands Ferrari #2 this will mean A.J. will go there too. Iowa + the purebred Italian horsepower of 3 Ferraris is the only way Penn State will be challenged next season, and perhaps the next season too. I predict Iowa WILL land Ferrari #2 tonight!
  18. Robbie Howard (if healthy) would be the starter. The problem is he's yet to be healthy a full season at Penn State. He has chronic shoulder injuries which seem to only get worse over time. At his best he is capable of being a lower AA level guy. He did take out Malik Heinselman at NCAAs the last time he was there. Gary Steen - 2x PA state champ, tries super hard but seems undersized. He's had a few years in the PSU room now so I have a hard time seeing him making a jump to a .500 level guy. Kurt McHenry - I remember him being a top level recruit who was neck and neck with Heinselman in high school. I think he had (and maybe still has) the same issue as Heinselman as not being big enough for 125. Hard to see him being a solid upgrade over Gary Steen even. I think Penn State needs someone else in the mix...a healthy, full-sized 125 pounder. Given the current room, a low level AA would have to be a favorite at being Penn State's starter at 125 this year. Any ideas?
  19. What was his ranking coming out of high school?
  20. Wright was a split second away in OT from being a 3x champ like Bo. Still, 4x AA, 3x finalist, 2x champ is pretty amazing for someone who wasn't really heralded as a top recruit out of high school.
