  1. Did you read about how ignorant you are or did you just continue to practice the same method that got you here?
  2. This is someone desperately trying to convince themselves that what they were told is true despite the lack of evidence to support it.
  3. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6354513/#:~:text=Appeal to ignorance is also, yet been proven as false. Surprises me, not in the least. Advise: Trust the crosswalk signs
  4. Don't need to. Admin saw the benefit in cutting ties. That they haven't gotten it right yet doesn't mean they shouldn't have still made the move.
  5. They can't prove that 'what they believe needs taught' is real. Where as the more we learn about the world/universe makes the gap that their friend lives in, smaller and smaller. Thus harder and harder to convince themselves that what they've wasted their time with is worth spending more time. Sunken cost can wreck your day.
  6. But also used that same fiction to preach to slaves to obey your masters even the cruel ones. Twisting yourself into a pretzel to make excuses for a being that should've seen all this coming and either didn't or chose to ignore it should make you question any/all of it. Then you're gonna say, 'but free will'. To which I will ask, 'which person, that has a financial stake in you retaining your faith, told you that?'
  7. Always comes back to accountability. You'll keep beating that horse till it bucks, won't you?
  8. I think having these conversations is exactly what was intended.
  9. Tell me one good thing that book advocates for that couldn't be found in another book? Also, would that book also have the bits about slavery and stoning and rape and incest and genocide? If I had to guess, no. If we can find the same message in any other book of fiction. Why not read that one so as to not have to deal with the other, incredibly immoral parts? Because to continually advocate for the reliance of the book or its message you are tacitly agreeing with the other parts.
  10. Yes. You were convinced of it as a child by people you trusted to lead you. Like Santa. But rather than casting that belief aside when kids around you started coming to their senses. You probably kept going to church or wherever and having the belief/faith reinforced. Also that your parents could not possibly be wrong about THIS because they are so smart and in charge and if you disagree with them there could be some bad ramifications. As kids we all picked up on the things we just shouldn't ask about. Getting spanked will do that. Now the sunken cost has kicked in and to question it now would mean unwinding a whole lot of stuff that you would rather not. Calling into question loved ones and the trauma that might bring up. So instead you decide to fight against it despite an itch in your mind that you probably don't have a leg to stand on. BTW, faith is what you say when you don't have a good reason or you'd just say the reason.
  11. I can appreciate that this is your opinion of how different people interpret and follow a work of literature. Please, stop saying that all these people do these things because it is something you feel to be true. They don't. Not all followers of a religion do x, y, or z or said religion. They still consider themselves as followers of religion. What you are doing is a 'no-true-Scotsman'. Trying to put a label on things that probably don't fit under that label. Why do you think you do that? Hint: its not because its true, because it isn't. Two commandments: The hell they do! The hate and vitriol on this site and many others would paint a much different picture. Little to no sympathy or empathy for our neighbors. Then the question is, who are our neighbors? To which I go back to the line from a previous thread. 'Its whatever I feel is right at the time!' So its arbitrary. Thus not universal. Established by blob: what does that even mean? That more people voted against 45 twice but we shouldn't follow them one of the times because laws of man supersede any others? That doesn't seem to make sense. Would love for you to square that circle. I have never argued against personal accountability. Just that I feel your emphasis on self reliance is a mask that you put up to avoid helping those that you feel are unworthy. Again for your own reasons and not of a higher power. Just that you don't want people to see your bias and call you out on it so you cloak it in 'personal accountability'. NDE would be better metrics under those circumstances. But how could you confirm anything 'seen' by a person whose brain is likely deprived of oxygen for a period of time. The beauty of a 'personal deity' is that it cannot be proven wrong. And that will continue to be the basis of the exploitation of religion until enough people become educated enough to figure it out. Which makes me wonder why the religious right is hell bent on tearing down public education in this country. Could it be that the one thing religion fears is a population with the guts and gumption to question the 'teachings' of the all time hide and seek champion.
  12. Not sure people think he's the worst. Just an unlucky/lucky series of events that led to wrong/less than ideal decisions being made. He flies under the radar at AU. Puts together a few good individuals. Puts a few on the same team at the same time. They punch through for 5th. All while the coach at OU is on his way out. Could not have happened at a 'better' time for Cody. But turns out his style doesn't translate to a larger program with a bigger spot light on it. Not that he's a bad guy or bad coach. Just didn't fit the situation at the time.
  13. That was a lot. I'm sorry that you needed to toss that last bit in there. Being wrong is the same as being right if you don't realize it yet. Easter is a pagan ritual. Why do you think it doesn't have a set day. So is Christmas, btw. Why do you think its so close to winter solstice? In order to stay relevant they coopted holidays from conquered lands. Along with not following large parts of the book anymore. Makes the religion easier to swallow for more people. But the numbers are fading again. I wonder what they'll do next? Accept LGBTQ+ and/or trans community.
  14. Why should anyone care about who you think is 'sad'? Maybe they are not. Maybe just being able to swim for the first time as the representation of the person they always felt they were, makes them very happy. I think that's the thing that bothers you the most(because you have only speculation of other things that could be bothersome). It usually does. That they could be happy doing something you feel should make them 'sad' or ashamed. I know at this point you've stopped reading because of psycho-babble stuff that you can't either; understand or are afraid is correct. I don't think you have any idea what 'indoctrination' really means. Its being forced to believe something without sufficient evidence. Which is exactly what you've done at every step in this conversation. Rather than trying to learn or gain more understanding. You've fallen back on your biased ideas of a thing and refused to acknowledge that you could be wrong or have been misled. Coming to the realization that you've been indoctrinated is difficult. But it seems as though you have the signs of someone who has. Thinking you are too smart to be tricked doesn't inoculate you from the possibility of being tricked. Just that you're too ashamed to admit it. 'Different then they are'? What kind of person is already trying to put kids in a box rather then allowing them to investigate, in a safe way, every conceivable possibility? Its because you're scared or jealous. Those are usually the reasons parents try to stifle their children. Because they are emotionally immature and would rather have the satisfaction of being 'better' than their kids rather than them find out the truth and beauty of what's really out there. Probably something you were not able to experience as a child. But what do I know, I'm a babbling psycho. It is in the open. Its not going away. People are going to be themselves without your permission and doing it right in front of you and likely they've done it without you knowing or being bothered by it. Regardless of how 'sad' or different you think it is. Until you, eventually, don't even think of it as odd. It will be at this point that we've won. You will have accepted this 'horrible thing' that you fought against so vehemently, that you won't even remember why. It'll just be another in a long line of infinitesimal changes that you cursed and feared but in the end made very little difference in your life. If for no other reason that you chose not to participate. It will be so subtle that it likely won't even register in your mind and when the next issue comes up you'll do this dance all over again. Your words, 'They are sad, depressed and have little hope of every getting out of that. They need counseling, they need help. They need understanding.' All things that you could say in the mirror and be spot on. You are so scared, I hope it doesn't lead you to do something that you'll regret.
  15. A vast majority of this country agree with him. As based on five of the last six general elections. That gap will only get wider. An 80 year old man came out in support for alternative lifestyles. Sorry you feel it outshined your imaginary friend. If they could be outshined by such a tiny effort, makes me wonder if they are as powerful as claimed. Totally worth it.
  16. Do you not see that you are trying to get a group of people, who obviously agree to act a certain way at a certain time and under very strict conditions, to abide by your narrow view of right and wrong? Bring it up in a meeting and vote for different people next time. Not much else I can suggest.
  17. Collection vs book is a distinction without a difference. Its one religion(not just one, but each one makes the claim) that claims it, all of it, as fact. Trying to separate one portion from the rest is not illegal but does call into question the truthiness of the whole work. I don't read those languages. But it doesn't matter. The oldest, no matter how close to the actual events, cannot be considered 100% accurate because there is nothing to compare. Considering the stories weren't written down until decades after some of the events. Would, again, call into question the accuracy of the events at all. Difference. I don't think it matters. Accuracy or truth of either hasn't been established. Once there are examples to compare rather than just opinions of a thing to compare then we can have that conversation. Slavery: From what I understand, the whole book is for christians. But since you asked, Leviticus 25:44-46. Ephesians 6:5-8. Numbers 31. If part of the book is immoral, how does that effect the rest of the book? If you can just decide which passages to follow as true are you not making up your own religion? Don't need bonus points. Not about winning.
  18. What does 'bitter' mean in this context? But those just sound like... days. Enjoy yourself. Gratitude it up! Streisand-effect: trying to divert attention from something. Inadvertently drawing WAY more attention than otherwise would. Maybe the juice wasn't worth the squeeze on this one.
  19. So you agree you can just not go and everyone will be just fine not seeing the thing they wouldn't want to see anyway? How is this purity culture BS not yelling at clouds? ! 'You should be ashamed to do that because I would be!' I'm sorry you were raised that way. They were wrong. Wrong about a lot of things. But you are allowed to express yourself in a way that best represents you. As long as you don't hurt anyone. Let your freak flag fly! That should be an emoji offered as a response!
  20. Uneducated people are easy to rile up by creating, often through fear, an 'out' group to blame for their situation. Violence and uncomfortable situations occur everywhere and for myriad reasons. We need people with the tools and the temperament to address them without the use of violence. As with all areas, the tiniest niche will be filled good or bad. Sometimes that niche is filled by someone(or someones) that feel a violent mob is their best means to live, thrive, and survive in the future. They will try to stoke it either by accident or on purpose. One could potentially be forgiven. The other cannot. My suggestion, to cover all the bases, is to not do it at all. But that is more complicated. We will need people with tools to think and reason better. So as to make better decisions about complicated topics. The 'it makes me feel icky' party, closely associated with the 'Leopards eating faces' party, at least recently, feel threatened for no reason and in so doing change the rules so that they are the minority of the people but hold the majority of power in several states and a few branches of federal government. They are parties(Icky and Leopards) of fear and division and will lead to violence because they don't have the tools to realize how wrong they are and have been and will continue to be. And we have decades if not centuries of evidence. But each person has to come to it themselves. Which is painfully slow considering if you don't get it in the 75 years or so that we get then you probably passed it on to another generation and it will take that much longer.
  21. The golden rule is a reflection of how you would like to be treated. Not a demand that others treat you a certain way or in accordance to a certain standard. If someone is in a parade or acting out as a supporter of the parade, they are abiding the golden rule. You don't have to stay. It seems is if you want them to treat you the way you want to be treated. Sorry that's not how it works. Don't go to the parade and you won't be 'treated' in a way that displeases you. If laws are broken they will be dealt with.
