Jocko Willink podcast with Bo Nickal
pokemonster replied to Threadkilla's topic in College Wrestling
Really good interview. Are parents allowed to just withdraw their kids from school, do no homeschooling, and just play sports for an entire year? Sounded like the sole goal of that entire year was to get an advantage at wrestling when he didn't even need it. Hopefully that's not a trend, lol. -
So here's an article on why it's being dismissed: https://www.stwnewspress.com/news/sexual-battery-case-dismissed-against-aj-ferrari/article_aaedc456-6493-11ee-be16-83d27698e540.html “The young woman who is at the center of this matter has endured in the last year vicious attacks on multiple forms of social media, continuing trauma, blame, harassment, ostracism and indirect threats to her career: a career she has just begun,” Thomas wrote in the motion to dismiss. “She has made the very difficult decision after consultation with her family that her further involvement is much less important than her health, a career that she loves and the ugliness and hatred that she encounters and suffers each time this matter progresses to the next step. The office of the District Attorney supports her decision to be relieved from this further participation in the prosecution of this case by dismissing this matter.” I wouldn't say it's a declaration of innocence by any means. Seems she's been harassed to the point where she felt it was no longer worth it.

Isn't the use of insider information illegal in Nevada? Just because people are unethical and cheating, doesn't mean the NCAA should open up their athletes to doing so. Are you saying if you woke up tomorrow and were the NCAA president, you'd decide to allow sports betting amongst college athletes? Seems like a monumental mistake to do so. You open the NCAA up to a ton of scrutiny for various reasons. Integrity of the game / institution, the fact that gambling generally goes against the mission of developing and safe-guarding student athletes, the fact it's a slippery slope for many many people and can lead to compromising games, the potential loss of trust in the games from fans, etc. It's simply in the NCAA's best interest to keep the rules as they are. Wanna gamble? Go gamble. You just can't do it as an NCAA athlete.

Should the Hawkeyes hire David Taylor as their HC?
pokemonster replied to peanut's topic in College Wrestling
Why did Cael want to be a coach instead of coasting through the rest of his life? Because they're extremely competitive individuals and want to win at the highest levels in a sport they've dedicated their entire lives to. Personally, I'd rather coast, but not sure these guys are built like that. -
What a complete moron for tweeting that out. No sympathy - if anybody on the team should know better, it's him. There are reasons athletes are barred from gambling on sports and if an athlete is dumb enough to jeopardize their entire career over a few quick bucks, then they deserve the punishment. For those of you saying it's too harsh, suspending him from a meaningless dual season where half the wrestlers sit out already is not a sufficient punishment. That'd be like Harbaugh's meaningless suspension.

2023 World Wrestling tournament...
pokemonster replied to D3 for LU's topic in International Wrestling
I completely agree it wasn't a fluke as well. I wonder how Sadulaev's coach plays into this - do you think he's going to help Sadulaev scheme against the youngin', or just let the guys figure it out on their own? -
Flo guys talked about this for a bit due to DT's interview saying he's the most dynamic and dominant ever (https://www.flowrestling.org/events/11049592-2023-senior-world-championships/videos?playing=11251509&limit=60), and Ben brought up that compared to 74 and 97kg, 86kg has been pretty weak. They mentioned outside Yazdani, the field basically rolls over and is most definitely worse than our domestic competition. I think that has some merit to it.

Apparently the word is that Sadulaev had an injured neck.... So I'm fully prepared for everyone to say it was a fluke because of that. But the way he handled everyone else... the only explanation is it wasn't a fluke or he was on PEDs. -
Who is your school's most hated rival wrestler?
pokemonster replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
One more to add... Brent Metcalf at Iowa vs. Lance Palmer. Palmer was always the underdog and Brent was so easy to hate on with his intensity and his reaction to his losses to Caldwell (who can forget him ramming into Caldwell mid flip?). -
Like the announcer said, the dude barely even cracked a smile after the win. Dude must be dialed in!

Oh man, I didn't realize he was committed to the Bucks but Googled it and it was confirmed in an article. I second the Ramos rivalry. He would always stare him down and be so cringe while with the Brands. I really like the guy now though. Might be the change of scenery. For me, Bo Nickal of PSU was one. I didn't dislike him, but the rivalry with Myles Martin was wild. Watching him flip Myles onto his back in the 184lb final and then rant and rave about Penn State winning titles... Oof that was a tough one to swallow. But again, love the guy when he's not facing OSU wrestlers. -
How would Yazdani do in NCAA D-1 wrestling?
pokemonster replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Good point. How many matches you reckon somebody like Yazdani has of actual competition per year? -

I was wondering the same, and Chance clearly schemed well to beat Jordan. I think if he had enough tape and feel for these international guys he could probably do the same and game plan well against them. But you simply can't discount Chance's ability in winning a tournament with Dieringer, Starocci, Marinelli, McFadden, etc. There's no way he simply spent 2 years focusing on Burroughs or he wouldn't have even made it through the Open. JB had months to prepare for Chance and didn't get it done. -
It looks like most of the highly sought-after recruits do not participate in meaningful degrees and instead get something along the lines of Tourism Management, Sports Management, Parks and Rec, Psych. etc. Do those degrees really matter if it says "UNC" or "Stanford" after it? Genuine question, btw. Edit to add: Just did some creeping on Penn State's team, almost all of them are enrolled in "RPTM" or Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management.
-
According to what I found online, 19% of all 4 star recruits coming out of high school get drafted to the NFL. Fairly decent shot.

Real estate agent and Enterprise Car Rental is also an option. Don't sell those guys short now.

Terry Brands applied for the UNC Head Coach job?
pokemonster replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Random question - but why is it in wrestling that only the greatest wrestlers are expected to be good coaches? You certainly don't see this in other sports (nobody assumes Michael Jordan would be the best basketball coach) and, with all the administrative bs required of coaching, why is being great even an advantage over others unless you are the one rolling with the wrestlers / teaching technique on the mat? -
Was he really intending to wrestling at 197? Seems like a pretty poor plan if so. I haven't been following his story, but if he's playing linebacker, I highly doubt the football coaches would even entertain the thought of him cutting down to 197lbs every offseason. He'd be shooting himself in the foot from a football perspective.
-
I'm curious what degrees the starting athletes are getting - from what I've seen based on watching the NCAA tourney, most of the successful wrestlers are getting Recreation Management, Communications, Psych, or Sports Management degrees. Every once in a while you'll see a guy who gets an Engineering degree like Adam Coon (impressive), but seems to be the exception rather than the norm. I know those universities mentioned are prestigious, but does a Sports Management degree from Stanford really stand out more than other schools?
