Really just depends on how you want to skin that cat. From an individual success standpoint, Coleman has been awesome. O’Connor is the best thing at UNC since TJ in the 90s. We’ve also had 3 all Americans pretty much every season and McNeil shows a lot of promise. The negative is from a team perspective, UNC has gotten worse every year. The team has had the same holes in the lineup for years now (125, 165, 197, 285 haven’t been competitive weights in years and recruiting hasn’t addressed it). We’ve been passed comfortably by NC State, VT, and Pitt making us the 4th best squad in a conference with only 6 programs. I’m just not the guy that’s going to use a post about our coach leaving to poo-poo on the weaknesses he’s had over the years lol. So yeah, hate to lose him and wishing him the best.

I wouldn’t rule out Kolat. He’s been around UNC’s program on and off for a while now. I absolutely hate to lose Coleman, but wishing him the best. I’m sure his dream job is Okie State and it looks like this is his chance.

Very bittersweet for this UNC fan. Beyond happy for O’Conner to get to go back closer to home and get paid to coach. A little disappointed he’s leaving UNC. I guess Illinois is my second favorite team now lol. Editing for clarity: originally he was planning to stay at UNC to coach next year, but I’m pretty sure it would’ve been a volunteer/grad assistant gig. Don’t blame him at all for going home and getting paid.

Come on, Flow. You're not even trying now.

It was at Oklahoma state (not at a B10 school) so Flo got streaming rights. -

I don’t have problems 99% of the time, but if you guys are telling me you didn’t have problems with the Oklahoma State Vs Iowa dual back in 2017 or 18 (it’s been a while) then you either 1) have memory loss 2) didn’t try to watch or 3) weren’t subscribed to Flo at the time lol. That was probably the biggest dual of the year and absolutely no one could watch for more than 3-5 second intervals before it went back down. I know, I know, old dual. But it was one of the marquee duals of the year and Flo was a huge debacle. Like I said 99% of the time I’m fine with the streaming. But that one always stands out in my mind as a huge Flo streaming failure. Edit: crap I should’ve read the rest of the thread lol. Just saw someone else commented this. Glad other people remember how bad that was -
His dad didn’t offer specifics. The lead into it was a little weird from Pyles. He basically said “you told me something off camera about Spencer’s mom not being here. Are you comfortable saying it on camera?” And Spencer’s dad said (paraphrasing here) the way their entire family were treated by fans in the venue and in the hotel was so harsh that it affected Spencer’s mom so deeply she said she won’t be attending events in person anymore.
-
Just listened to Spencer’s dads interview. The one thing that stood out to me is that his mom doesn’t want to go to events anymore because of how fans treated the Lee family in the venue and the hotel. That’s such a black eye to the community. I hope whoever did that to the Lee family are having the day they deserve. You can be disappointed in a result, but it should never spill over to the athlete personally and especially not the family.

Spencer Lee’s first interview since NCAAs
goheels1812 replied to bnwtwg's topic in College Wrestling
Really enjoyed how candid Spencer got with some parts of the interview and how he allowed himself to be vulnerable with KB and Jerry. I never realized the unfair standards Spencer had until he laid it out like that (especially when he mentioned Yianni almost losing a bunch of matches this year and not catching anywhere near as much flack as Spencer would catch for not pinning every opponent he faced). Hats off to him for a fantastic career, being a great ambassador of the sport, and cementing himself as an all time great. Looking forward to watching him work his way through the senior level next. -
Just came here to make sure someone mentioned Dake Taylor in the national championship. Thank you sir for your service.

I have a pretty robust background in working with infectious diseases and the anti-climactic answer is it’s impossible to know (especially without access to Peyton’s medical charts to get further insight into what the doctors were seeing and doing). Infections can get really unique in every individual and there are so many cases that don’t end up being “textbook” and easy to solve. I initially started typing a whole bunch of medical reasoning and then realized no one will want to read all of that to get a non-answer. I wish Peyton all the best in his recovery and am hopeful he can make a 100% recovery.

It’s funny to me the large contingent of “my body, my freedom, I’ll never wear a mask” folks that try to shame others for making their own personal choices. It’s hypocrisy. I’ve been wearing a mask on planes since about 2016. I had to start flying a lot for work and noticed that almost every single time I flew I got a head cold. Nothing serious or anything, but enough to be annoying. I popped on an N95 to fly and rarely got sick anymore. I still fly regularly for work and throw on a mask. I’ve had my fair share of snickers and comments about being a brainwashed libural, how I’m scared of a fake virus made up by the media, etc while all I’m doing is trying to avoid colds like I’ve done for almost a decade lol.

He does it on twitter too. He’s in every UNC tweet trolling. Best thing to do is not give him any attention (why I didn’t reply to his pointless “why are you a Carolina fan” thread.) If you don’t give trolls attention they get bored and move on because he has nothing meaningful to add to the board.

Love this. Thanks for the explanation!

Loving all of this data. It’s fun to look through. Curious the metric you used to say UNC was expected to have 2 AAs? Was your 2nd McNeil? I was pretty confident he’d AA as long as he got a reasonable blood round draw, but he was a 10 seed so not technically projected to finish top 8 using seeding.

Worst tactical mistakes of NCAAs?
goheels1812 replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Came here seeing 5 pages and thinking “wow there must have been a ton of tactical errors at the tournament!” Did not leave disappointed -
Dean Heil. Guy tried to pin himself from the crab ride more than anyone else I can ever remember.

Chandler spent 7 minutes trying to figure out when and how he could hit an assassin lol. He was fun to watch. I hate he didn’t get to wrestle in his final NCAA tourney, but oh well.

Where will AJ and Anthony Ferrari end up?
goheels1812 replied to AOCStallsLikeAMug's topic in College Wrestling
Calling AOC a stall merchant on every UNC post and then using the term manlet. Sir, I believe I have found your twitter account that you troll from. -
Just curious - where was Austin O’Conner?

70% bonus rate says hi. -
If it makes you feel any better AOCs only take down surrendered wouldn’t have counted if Coleman didn’t swallow his brick for 60 seconds and then decide to throw it significantly later. AOC very clearly had a 2 first from the tripod position and the ref was at a bad angle to see it. Then the refs told him “nah man that’s way too late” and wouldn’t review it lol. But kind of similar to the RBY thing.

I’m obviously biased, but I don’t know man. I’ve been in a college wrestling room and I can tell you right now it’s hard. It’s so hard to be your best in every match every year. I agree 157 wasn’t a juggernaut of a weight class, but not giving up a regular season takedown is absurd. You have to be perfect constantly against the best of the best that have a chance to be a starter at the next level. Based on what you’re saying, it would make sense for Alirez also not to surrender a takedown this year, which didn’t happen. That’s a very very difficult feat to accomplish.
-
Zerban is a really really good wrestler. Him getting the 32 seed was reasonable based on his record (which was something like 23-12 if I’m remembering correctly, along with a flurry of losses to finish the season). But he wasn’t a typical 32 seed. I figured he’d do well on the backside.
-
I figure that will be the big knock on him is the competition aspect. I’m pretty confident Humphrey’s was the 2nd best 157 pounder this year and AOC did knock him off in the semis (although it was a tight match) so I’m glad O’Conner saw him. His resume was 2 wins over Andonian (AA)including a major, win over Ed Scott (AA), couple wins over Vince Zerban (round of 12 from the 32 seed), win over Humphrey’s (placed 3rd) and then obviously the win over Haines. All you can do is beat the guys in front of you and AOC did that convincingly this year.
-
I would cast my vote for Parris in a normal year, but will vote for AOC this year because I’m a fan and think he’s earned it. 70% bonus rate. Only allowed 1 takedown and 1 reversal all year. Beat a ton of high level kids at his weight. When you talk about a season of dominance, AOC’s name has to be in the conversation at the very least.
