  1. I'm out of my element here but remember a documentary that said "senior" level sumo wrestlers can earn salaries well into six figures, but there are also intangibles like having lower-ranked guys in the stable serving you and not having to pay for food or lodging. IIRC the envelopes after the matches start at around $200 (each) with more envelopes and more money as the tournaments progress. Not bad for matches that usually run less than 30 seconds a pop. The catch though is that you really don't make a living wage until you are in the top two ranks (divisions?).
  2. Instead of thanking Jesus in post-match interviews, his wrestlers will be praising Xenu. What a refreshing change.
  3. I'm thankful he didn't say thrown to the lions...
  4. I admit to being critical of Brands but that's a pretty tight placement band on the graph. He has coached 90 AAs (100 if you count the Covid year) and averages close to 6 AAs per season. Plus his teams don't lose to ISU, so that helps to keep him off of the hot seat.
  5. Good call. It'll be interesting to see how conference realignment shakes things up with UNC and the ACC in the future. As for Terry, I think he'd be fine at a bigger or smaller program as long as it's not a place where the AD would keep him on a short leash. He will be successful if he has the space to do things his way and figure stuff out without a ton of guardrails, at least initially.
  6. So, no more VPN option. Looks like the site is live at https://uww.org/uww-plus Looks like a nice landing place for wrestling content but I'm wondering how the pricing will work for a global audience. There are three subscription tiers: pay per match, pay per day, and pay per tournament, but I can't get past the sign-up page. Maybe it's because I'm in the US.
  7. Sounds great. Some time ago I randomly stumbled upon a JUCO wrestling livestream, but I can't for the life of me remember who the streamer was. Do you know any streamer recommendations ? Would love to tune in.
  8. It's the offseason. Give it some time and we'll soon be enjoying Tbar's musings with a nice vintage wine from the south of France.
  9. I'm shocked that Kyven Gadson didn't go to Penn State
  10. I thought the other Penn State recruiting advantage was ice cream.
  11. water polo: soccer without the field lacrosse: soccer with too much gear gymnastics: soccer minus the ball but with very fancy flops wrestling: soccer except your opponent is the ball and the mat is the goal
  12. Good for Koll, I guess. Pretty rough news for Stanford whose athletics is already in a tough situation, and for Tony Ramos who I wanted to see run the program.
  13. Didn't Cris Cyborg almost die a couple of times from cutting weight? I don't keep up with MMA but remember the discussions on the old board about fighters making dangerous cuts in the UFC. I am curious if they have made any changes to their weight management rules & procedures.
  14. Interesting. I stress starve when I'm stressed or anxious, too. Just caffeine, water, and some sugar like I have to make weight in a couple of days. I wonder if it's a common thing that a lot of former wrestlers do.
  15. 141 might be fun, too. Was Echemendia's court case dropped?
  16. What's the story? What do you all think? Does this mean the free/VPN streams will be gone?
  17. Who qualified? I thought someone here mentioned that Russia had its own championship tournament this year.
  18. Let Ramos run with it.
  19. Didn't one of the upstart freestyle wrestling leagues back in the day schedule exhibition matches at NBA games during halftime? Disclaimer, I might have hallucinated this
  20. I'm down for whatever structure but at the end of the day it comes down to money and sponsorships. I thought AGON was an interesting concept and want to believe that it (and GCW and Realpro and others) were ahead of its time before streaming became ubiquitous and possible to develop an audience. Building off the RTC model here would be a nice way to kick start something without having to start from scratch. How do the pro leagues in India and elsewhere work? I remember some of our MFS/WFS won contracts to compete for a season but don't remember why we don't hear much about it anymore.
  21. Maybe they'll merge with the Western Athletic Conference and become the PACWAC. Adding UVU and Cal Baptist to the Pac might be good... maybe get GCU to restart wrestling!
