Agreed. Terukina's gains have been impressive while Ayala looks like he's stuck in neutral. I'm not sure what's going on but I trust that he will figure it out come March.

Yeah, it's going to be simulcast on both ESPN (tv and streaming) and ESPN+. Nice to see a hopefully tight Cy-Hawk dual again. It'll definitely come down to the toss-ups and bonus. I hope it's LOUD in Ames, that'll look good on tv. 125 - Terukina de Ayala 0-3 Iowa State 133 - Teske dec Frost 3-3 141 - Woods tf Eche 8-3 Hawks 149 - Swiderski dec VV 8-6 157 - Franek dec Chittum 11-6 165 - Carr maj Caliendo 11-10 174 - Arnold dec Gaitan 14-10 184 - Feldcamp maj Swafford 14-14 197 - Glazier dec Brode 17-14 Hawks 285 - Bastida maj Hill 17-18 Iowa State

True that. The UWW has put in some good rules to minimize stinginess!

I'd love to see what the modern era MFS/WFS version of this list looks like for Worlds and the Olympics. WIth the current pacing of international tournaments and the very high level of competition, stingy scoring makes more sense to me. If you can't pinfell or tech your opponent, you might as well exert as little energy as possible and do the bare minimum to advance since your next match could be in just 20 mins. But passivity rules, 5-point moves, and multiple-exposure laces/guts, etc. can complicate stinginess.
-
Wow! Does that make him the GOAT of stingy scoring? I've never heard of him, but that is impressive. What were the big differences in rules back then, aside from the lack of singlets? I now have a new appreciation for scoring efficiency. I mean give me a shootout where both wrestlers open wide up and run up the score, but there's something to be said for the rare champ who puts up points like they're being taxed on them

Jim Scherr, 1984. Quite the contrast from his twin brother Bill, who lit everyone up in his title run at that same tournament.

I'll say Megalaudis takes out Lee
CHROMEBIRD replied to Hammerlock3's topic in International Wrestling
"Coasting" is a fair description. He was never in danger of losing and didn't have to push himself more than he needed to in order to win, which might explain the lackluster defense against Mega's leg attacks. That ankle pick was pretty sweet, though. -
I was most impressed by Terukina's win over Barnett. I thought last year's win was a fluke but it looks like he's widened the gap. Nice to see that he's healthy. Very excited to see how he matches up with Ayala this week, (and live on ESPN).

Thanks for posting the vid. I disagree with an earlier comment that Lilledahl could've done much better if he made it to the second period. You could see that Lil Luke had nothing for Spencer's grown man strength. Megaludis too, he was getting to Spencer's legs but couldn't really finish. Mega is pretty slick with his scrambles, doing the splits and contorting himself, but Lee was too strong (but that first leg lace defense was impressive). Spencer completely owned his ground and didn't cede an inch of territory. -

Great analysis. How do are feeling about Zane's chances against Spencer next April? The gas tank strategy rings familiar. I didn't see Spencer compete today, so I can't tell if he needs to work on his conditioning or if he's still a little banged up (is that what #1 is referring to?). OTOH, Spencer has looked pretty jacked on social media lately (ADS too) so I like the potential of bigger stronger freestyle Lee. Similarly, people were saying Nolf looked out of shape today but he did just fine and I'm sure we'll see a far more improved version of what we saw today when trials rolls around. -
What the Hidlay?

That was quick. I was looking at the Trackwrestling mats and you posted the final before the feed could catch up. On to Bullberger, I guess

Wild to see Harbaugh and UM clap back at the B1G and get all litigious. My impression was that the conference stepped in and imposed penalties before the NCAA could come down with a heavier hand?
-
Thanks... I'm not watching and was going off of the scores. Sooo, not much of a threat-to-Dake vibe from either?
-
How are you feeling about Nolf-Kimmer? Looks like Kem has been lighting everyone up today.
-
Nice to see that Haley Augello is wrestling again. Where is she training these days? Did it look like she lost a step after retiring?
-
P4P based on what? Only the current season? All-time college record? Including freestyle? Including pre-college wrestling? SOS? Total # of bonus points? Let us know what you are thinking, man.

You'd still have enough to ding a ding dang your dang a long linglong afterwards!
-
That's probably right. Although sports betting has proliferated since the apps and crypto and what not make it frictionless and harder to trace. But it also begs the question, where students getting the money to gamble these days? School is so expensive and scholarship money is tight. NIL must be a real gravy train.

PSU - 165 Facundo to Olympic Redshirt - Mesenbrink Time!
CHROMEBIRD replied to Gus's topic in College Wrestling
Thanks... maybe I was thinking of SVN? I don't know why I remember him as a shorty -
That's too bad, I was looking forward to the big reveal that Gable Steveson won his Olympic gold competing for... wait, Gable is taking his singlet off and he has another singlet underneath... hold on, what countr-- what flag is that? You mean he was actually competing for North Korea????

Is he still growing? In my mind's eye Facundo was kind of short for 165. -
I heard on a podcast that a lot of college and freestyle wrestlers who go pro are usually pretty good about #1 and not getting injured themselves, but struggle with basic stuff like not having your back towards the camera during a move and slowing the pace of the action (not trying to do too much too quickly) so the audience can take it in and react. Not willing to put guys over makes sense too. That, and having the charisma to sell their persona which is a big challenge for all pro wrestlers. I'm not sure if the problem is Gable or the way WWE is developing pro wrestlers. Didn't Angle go through a long process learning all this stuff before making his debut on TV? Now it's more of a sink or swim model and Gable will need to figure things out quickly. Seems like a lot of WWE fans are hating on Gable. Why doesn't he lean into that and go full heel, make them really despise him? That would give him immediate attention and jumpstart his pro wrestling persona. Maybe he's already doing that, idk because I don't keep up with WWE.
