Agreed, and I understand it. It’s just that usually you don’t see it happen with a guy of his pedigree.
-
Surprised at this. RBY is a guy who I thought soon could be the top guy on the US team and a medal threat. Usually the guys that rep another country are lower on the ladder. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him beat the US guy, whoever it is.

Nice pickup for the Badgers, welcome Zan!

Koll is great, but he’d do it too if he could.

Actually he said “my undertook comes from the Holy Spirit, so it’s a little different from Yazdani’s”. When Pyles asked him again he said “God gave me these under hooks. I don’t know who gave those to Yazdani, maybe a club coach, um a long time friend”. He’s is pretty clearly insinuating that Yazdani’s beliefs are inferior. Most people think Starocci is the cocky one who opens his mouth too much. But Brooks is much worse because he presents himself as pious and humble but then throws these underhanded insults, constantly bringing up his faith and making sure everyone knows that he thinks other beliefs are beneath his. At least Starocci keeps it about competition.

I thought we are posting best, not worst wrestling stories.

Lopez to return seeking 5th Olympic title
BuckyBadger replied to fishbane's topic in International Wrestling
@LJB I generally agree with you that Greco is just not well understood and very under appreciated for its nuances and complexity in this country. But I probably differ in that most high level Greco guys will get schooled in Freestyle in the same way you describe Freestyle guys getting schooled in Greco. You might say that the physicality and brutality of Greco is at another level, but there is a trade off. There are so many more ways to get exposure in freestyle. It emphasizes a different skill set. They are simply different sports. Not an apples to apples comparison. -

2011 silver was to Kayaalp and when the tournament was in Istanbul. Hmmm, nothing suspicious there. -

A vein just burst in Kayaalp He’s got to be up there as one of the best to never win Olympic gold. -
Honest Opinions for 2023-2024 - Your Team Edition
BuckyBadger replied to nhs67's topic in College Wrestling
As others have said this is probably a best case type of scenario. While next years team could be decent to good, what’s concerning is what happens after? Things seem to be moving in the wrong direction. Rowley was a really good recruit and is transferring out. Two other future recruits from California just flipped (to Iowa and North Carolina). Maybe most concerning is Bono can’t get any of the top recruits in state, and Wisconsin has been putting out a number of very good recruits recently. -

There might an aspect of media prestige, but the Olympics is also held in higher regard by the wrestlers themselves. The year after the Olympics is consistently missing top guys who put everything into the Olympics and take the next year or two off before they prepare for the next cycle. Plus, basically anyone can enter the World Championships, the Olympics are tough to qualify for. I don’t discount the accomplishment of a world title, but it’s not the same as the Olympics.
-
Because it is that much better.
-
Bumping up to then have to face Yazdani is hardly avoiding competition. Given his accomplishments since then I seriously doubt any domestic losses are gnawing at him.

Starocci gives the best and worst interview in the same interview. Equal parts cringe and can’t take your eyes away. His interview after winning NCAAs when someone asked him about meeting Trump. “That’s pretty cool,” Starocci said. “I like watching his interviews because he’s a big personality. He has a set of big balls.” https://nittanysportsnow.com/2023/03/pretty-big-being-with-him-psus-carter-starocci-meets-with-former-president-donald-trump-after-national-title/

The other thing that is so impressive about what Taylor has accomplished is that he only started his run of World titles when he was 27. Usually if a guy is on the senior level 4-5 years, you don’t see them jump such levels when they are that old. I’m no PSU or Taylor fanboy, but I don’t think it can be overstated what he’s accomplished at the senior level.
-
Yes, if Taylor wins the next Olympics then I think he is right up there with best ever American wrestlers (Smith probably still leads the pack). What he’s accomplished is nothing short of amazing. He couldn’t beat Burroughs or Dake, decides to move up 26 lbs. He transforms his body, but maybe more importantly he figures out a way to beat Yazdani who was supposed to be the next once in a generation type of wrestler. I don’t know if people realize what a big deal that is. When all is said and done Taylor may have a more accomplished international resume than Dake, Burroughs or Yazdani. And before he moved up, he was not in the same conversation as them.
-
Amazing to see him beat Deiringer, who he was regularly beat by at OSU. What a story.
-
All so they can have a program with one All-American every 5 years? I don’t think big donors spend their money and accept less than mediocre results.
-
Nothing against Heflin, but it’s hard to see a scenario where the athletic department would get rid of Roselli because he wasn’t getting results and then turn around and hire the associate head coach who has been with the same underperforming program for over 5 years. Sounds like they really screwed this one up. Whoever mentioned earlier they should have waited until after the next Olympic cycle was right.
