  1. Ha, another DC wfh guy here too. Got quarterfinal mat cast on the tv and two mats up on my computer (switching back and forth to the matches I want to see up close). Work computer is off to the side, just to monitor email.
  2. Chittum gets majored by Askey.
  3. Given PSUs depth I wouldn’t be surprised if Nagao is out of the lineup after this year.
  4. When your mom tries to kick you out of the basement again.
  5. With that type of performance they could still win it.
  6. Jason Borelli seems like he has to at least be in the conversation.
  7. @CircleofTruth great post. I agree that those saying Bono can’t develop talent have some blinders on. His time at SDSU speaks to his ability to develop talent. But when you say Askren has no interest in helping UW because he is a Mizzou alum, I think that’s a bit different than actively discouraging his guys from going to UW. There are plenty of successful club coaches that go to school in a different state where they reside and plenty of their guys go to their state school. Askren seems to do everything he can to steer his guys away from UW. I remember an interview with Sinclair where he was asked where UW figured into his recruiting. His response was something like “There are 82 DI programs so UW is 83”. I’m guessing that isn’t coming from some bad experience he had with Bono and his staff. It’s obvious UW won’t reach their potential or even close to it unless they can keep most of the top in-state recruits and that isn’t happening, whether Askren is being fair or not.
  8. I can see how most athletic departments will disappear or be dramatically scaled down in the coming years, but why do you think what’s going on with athletics will lead to whole universities closing? Wouldn’t they just cut the fat instead (athletic departments, DEI offices, armies of administrators etc)?
  9. The financial end of universities as a whole or just university athletic departments?
  10. Maybe basketball can pull that off, even at Dartmouth. But wrestling? How do you think most ADs will take to money losing wrestling programs making collective bargaining demands?
  11. Lovett match from a few weeks ago is a good example. Last year at NCAAs against Parco is another. He tried to force a move right at the end of the period when he was either up or had choice. Got put to his back and spent the rest of the match taking risks to catch up.
  12. Gomez is a wild card because he often tries to force big moves and gets himself in trouble. But when he is on and not wresckless, it won’t be a surprise if he wins it all.
  13. I don’t disagree that Ben would be a great coach and elevate the program, I just don’t think UW would ever hire him.
  14. Completely agree, I really don’t get how Brands doesn’t weigh the risk higher in this risk reward scenario. Seems like a large chance of it blowing up in his face and little chance of elevating the program.
  15. I think the main issue for whoever is in charge, whether it’s Bono or someone else, is if they can tap into the AWA pipeline of recruits. Clearly, that’s not happening with Bono. I don’t know if it’s fair to say he isn’t a developer of talent. But if he’s only getting mid-level recruits, it might look that way compared to the upper echelon programs. If UW gets rid of Bono and Askren doesn’t like the new guy, it’s the same issue all over again.
  16. Respect to him for feeling a sense of loyalty and commitment to the program that showed interest in him before he became a big name. I just find it a bit puzzling that both Askren and Messenbrink senior probably know the college recruiting process/development at the next level better than 99%. It’s not like he was a kid with parents/coaches who haven’t been through this before. You’d think they’d have said something to him like it’s great that you want to be loyal but if it’s not the right place, don’t waste your limited years of development there. In any case, seems like he’s in the right place now.
  17. For those of us with no Twitter etc, can someone fill us in on what his recent announcement was?
  18. As an aside, why isn’t Yasguire in the lineup this year. He had a nice win over Hardy last year and I thought we’d be seeing more of him this year.
  19. Same issue with Max, he has no college coaching experience (or if he does it’s not recent), and no experience dealing with athletic department admin issues, alumni fundraising, etc. I just don’t see UW hiring either of them. But I’d be happy to be wrong.
  20. Would any DI program, not just Wisconsin, hire a new coach that has no recent experience coaching in college, and also working with administrators in a college athletic department? I think Askren would have the program competing in the top tier, and would love to see him get a shot but I don’t see a school like UW hiring someone who isn’t coaching in college right now. And this doesn’t even touch on Askren speaking/tweeting his mind on various issues, which would likely get him in trouble at UW.
  21. Is this his way of winning Iowa over so they let him enroll next year?
  22. Gerry Abas is another that doesn’t get mentioned too often. 3 time finalist losing to two greats in McIlravy and Fried.
  23. I believe Duane Goldman went 2-2-2-1, so he narrowly misses this list. If he had gotten 2nd all 4 years then I think he’d be the clear winner.
