Brands Advice To Suspended Iowa Wrestlers: 'Be Ready'
alex1fly replied to FanOfPurdueWrestling's topic in College Wrestling
Even though Iowa is a SWORN ENEMY lol I have sympathy. OSU has been boned by the NCAA several times in recent history on ridiculous charges - OSU basketball being the most recent victim. NCAA busted several schools for the same thing but levied far worse penalties on OSU basketball than on the other schools. Basically killed all the momentum the program had, which is now swimming at the bottom of the Big 12. NCAA likes to flex and isn’t accountable to anybody. Stinks. -

Cael/Carl wishes there was no dual season

Dustin Plott is looking beastly. Handled everything #4 Munoz had to throw at him. He's got Keckeisen this weekend... Keckeisen has looked like a NC contender since Day 1.

I don't know if I'm noticing it more this year, or if it really is worse but dang the subjective nature of stall calls and stalemates feels out of control. Anyways Pokes were a little flat but won close matches which is sure better than losing them. And they only gave up like 3 takedowns which is solid. Hoping to see Alvarez get in the rankings after beating #15 this week, beating #29 last week, and hanging tough with #9. I'm a little mystified to see Travis still ranked 18 since he beat Ed Scott who was ranked #4 and his sole loss was at 149.

Ref was so bad! Spratley was pinned several times before they called the pin. Bunch of scrambles that were clearly in progress were called as stalemates. Oregon State's 165 was on bottom and crawled from the center to the edge of the mat, how is that not fleeing the mat? At 141 neither guy took a shot until the 3rd period, no stall call. At 149 Alvarez took about 15 shots to his opponent's 2 shots, no stall call. Two Oregon State kids were on bottom and were called for stalling WHILE THEY WERE TRYING TO GET UP.

Trust me every OSU wrestling fan is hoping that Smith can adapt his views to look at the bigger picture. He’s shown signs of it this offseason and season. Got to put the best guy out there, not just who can perform well sometimes but completely flail other times.
-
Williams is not reliable (yet). And Smith has made some poor choices based on wrestle offs in the past few years.
-
If Williams can keep his head on straight he could be a real force. Kid has more raw talent and ability than I’ve seen in a long time. Needs to mature and take things a bit more seriously though before he can be relied on.
-
Yeah, I hope we see Alvarez again too. He's hungry for it. Jordan Williams may get there but doesn't seem to have the same go-get-em attitude. Alvarez has already beaten one ranked guy so if he can win against Singleton he may enter the rankings as well. Haas... guy currently has no offense and can't get out from bottom. Robb may be a 184 lb'er but he has good fight in him even at 197. Wonder if Olejnik will have a fire in him after losing last weekend.

I meant whichever year he lost to Suriano in the finals. I guess sophomore year.

Top Rated Matches / Best Match You Have Ever Seen
alex1fly replied to blueandgold's topic in College Wrestling
Piccinnini vs Lee was pretty epic. Picc was aggressive, Lee was patient but still so in control until the loudest pin(fall?) Gallagher Iba Arena has ever experienced! -
Is Mark Perry still coaching there? I don't see him listed on their page. Anyone know what he's up to now? My wrestling claim is fame is having Mark Perry whoop my butt. We were at a similar weight but thankfully he was wrestling high school when I was in junior high. I like to think I helped him succeed.

This explains a lot (lack of stall calls on top)
alex1fly replied to 1032004's topic in College Wrestling
And he wasn't called for stalling? That stuff is maddeningly inconsistent. I've found myself muttering to the tv during matches "better do something so you don't get a stall call". Should there be a "take x amount of shots per minute" metric or something to measure it? Perhaps two refs have to agree on a stall call? Or maybe you get two stall calls instead of one before they start giving your opponent points? -
So here's a link to last year's NWCA Dual Championships https://nwcaonline.com/news/2023/5/25/national-wrestling-coaches-association-nwca-national-dual-meet-championships-headed-back-to-the-uni-dome.aspx "The National Duals were last held in the UNI-Dome in 2011. In 2024, the National Duals will feature 96 programs from the following six divisions: NAIA Men, NAIA Women, NCAA D2 Men, NCAA D3 Men, NCAA Women, and NCWA Men." Was NCAA D1 Men ever a part of this?
-
Killed it? So it existed until when? I honestly don't remember Dual Championships being a thing even back in the 90s-00s.
-
Indeed. Doucet is hard to beat. That's a good quality to have. Not sure if/when he can develop beyond that. Probably depends on how Christian Carroll performs next year.
-
Sooooo what's the history of dual championships then? Does anybody care to share or do y'all just want to debate the best way to spell words. lol

A lot of great points here. Maybe it's pessimistic of me to picture everybody working for something like double boots and sitting on top. It's what I would do but maybe folks would get better at defending it. It is interesting though how mat wrestling is what gives folkstyle its signature style but there's considerable disagreement about how mat wrestling should go. I do maintain that stall calls are still amazingly arbitrary. If neither wrestler shoots for a whole period, why are there no double stall calls? If one wrestler takes a bunch of half-hearted shots that would never land, why does their opponent get a stall call? Why is "fleeing the mat" a stall call, but "taking a shot that will clearly land you both out of bounds" not? Some other random ideas on rule changes for mat wrestling. Just for fun - not a serious advocate of any of them. 1. Give more than 1 RT point, but let bottom wrestler up after X amount of time. 2. Give more than 1 RT point, but change the starting position of top/bottom wrestler. 3. Allow for 1 nearfall point. -
Seconded. He's one guy and a lot of people are involved in these decisions. However I honestly don't know the history of dual championships. Has there been one? If so, when/why did they stop? When discussions about a dual championship occur, who is in favor and who is against it?
-
I blinked and it was Doucet 3-0. Did he actually get a TD? Like all by himself? Without overtime?

I read your post above but I don’t see how it would lead to more action. That’s what I’ve been asking you to explain. If that is your explanation that’s fine, I just don’t see it. More riding time points means a strong top wrestler is going for boots, spiral, ankle ride, or similar every time so they can sit on top. There will be no action because the guy can’t get out. Currently that’s called as stalling for no action. Without stalling it’s a stalemate for no action. Several holds are just hard to get out of regardless of score or determination. In your scenario, Wrestler 1 gets an early 1st period TD, 3-0. They ride for 150 seconds, 8-0. Second period they choose top, stall their way to a ride out, it’s 12-0 to start the third period with one takedown in the match. More points, yes. But significantly changes the focus of folkstyle from takedowns to riding. And I don’t see how it would increase action overall.
