  1. bringing back the old stuff, nice
  2. Brandon Slay is the first Texas wrestler I remember ever hearing about
  3. besides both Brands brothers, a few more over the years that I can think of: DeAnna, Heffernan, Martin
  4. Metcalf's problem at Worlds was he would lose but beat the other guy up and that guy would lose next match and Metcalf was toast. I would have loved to see how he could have done in a true full bracket double elimination format.
  5. Yeah I know. Sounds like runner-up in trials then, so national team, but I’ve seen guys listed as alternate cause they were at the trials and nothing more. Heck I’ve seen a local guy’s fan swear he was an Olympian when all he did (which was impressive, but…) was make the trials.
  6. Saw that too after I posted. Not sure if alternate means national team or not. I’ve seen both terms used pretty loosely. But he was obviously very very good at a young age. Where’s my Easton or Lehigh people to clarify?
  7. going back, did Bobby Weaver make the national team in '76?
  8. The cattle prod story was part of a Flo feature I think not that old SI article. Apparently Cary wasn’t great at getting out from bottom at some point and dad utilized some….creative….methods to correct that.
  9. Now what I don’t know is if there was a generous weight allowance or what weight Bono wrestled his senior year. He might have been able to wrestle 135 at this event coming down from a heavier weight. But I don’t that for sure.
  10. Kolat and Bono wrestled at the Dapper Dan at 135. Same weight Cary won his 4th title. Cary went 140 at NHSCA tournament to go after Bono. Iirc Bono lost in quarters then Roger Chandler beat that guy in semis. Kolat then beat Chandler in finals. They would wrestle again in NCAA finals in ‘97. Vague recall of Bono beating Kolat one year at US open or trials, shortly after the weights switched from 138/152 (Kolat was in Olympics at 138) to 132/145.5 and they met at 145.5.
  11. Re Maryland wrestling - Lloyd Keaser was world champ in ‘73
  12. Kenny Monday is one. '88, '92, '96
  13. Someone on Iowa forum said it’s Donnie Vinson
  14. Gil Sanchez would like a word
  15. I count 5 transferring from GMU, ugh
  16. Slightly off topic but got me thinking, ‘86 started a bad run for Iowa at 118, particularly by their standards. No qualifier in ‘86, Regan seeded 5 but DNP in ‘87, then 3 years of Steve Martin = DNP in ‘88, 7th in ‘89, and DNP IN ‘90. 5 years and best to show is a 7th place. Abysmal during Gable era. Zap got it back on track the next 3.
  17. Matt Egeland. Placed 2nd at 118 in ‘85 from the 8 seed. Struggled the next year with the weight cut.
  18. was the scoring significantly different back in 1986? Iowa had 5 champs, a 2nd, a 4th, and a 5th. Scored 158 then. At a quick glance at bracket decent amount of bonus.
  19. Brothers And Brawlers - Sports Illustrated Vault | SI.com 'Dave spent one unhappy year at Oklahoma State, where he tried to cut too much weight, then transferred to UCLA to be with incoming freshman Mark and Horpel, then an assistant coach there.'
  20. guessing - to wrestle with his brother
  21. I tried to find info on that yesterday, I have vague recall that he was a transfer but can't find anything to verify.
  22. at least 5 for Bakersfield. I mentioned Joe Gonzales earlier, wrestled for Oklahoma before ending up at Bakersfield.
