Seeking Options to the Coin Toss
SetonHallPirate replied to davenowa's topic in High School Wrestling
I get that, Gimp, but we're discussing rules suggestions here, and the wording and parameters to make them work. This is why Secretary-Rules Editors exist at the college level, after all. -
Seeking Options to the Coin Toss
SetonHallPirate replied to davenowa's topic in High School Wrestling
Hadn't thought of what you suggested, but allowing "defer" actually might be a good idea to combat this sort of zugzwang (yes, that's a word...I didn't just make it up) scenario. As far as the back-to-back dual issue, my suggestion would be to waive the rest rule in that specific instance...although doesn't the rest rule specifically apply to tournaments and not duals as written? I'd have no issue with the rest rule being waived in this specific instance, as after the second match is over, you know the wrestler is getting a fairly long (at least the length of the dual) rest anyway. -
Seeking Options to the Coin Toss
SetonHallPirate replied to davenowa's topic in High School Wrestling
Here's my thinking (this may sound familiar to college fans, as it's the current rule): There's a coin toss, and the winner gets choice of either start weight or odd/even matches (lightest to heaviest). Loser gets choice of the other. Thinking is that in high school, choice of one won't be that substantial over the other. This differs from college, where I'd ideally like to get rid of an immediate coin toss, and have coaches "strike" weights alternately until two are left, and then flip from the two remaining weights. This is because the odd/even choice generally serves very little effect in college, and the start weight is a bit too overpowered. Interested in hearing your thoughts, Dave. -

D1 Tarleton State (TX) has a Head Coach?
SetonHallPirate replied to Tom formerly Tofurky's topic in College Wrestling
Texas A&M-Commerce is REALLY stretching the definition of metroplex there…might as well include Baylor and Tarleton State if you want to include TAMU-Commerce. -

Because...puppy defense? -
It’s been about 15-20 a weekend (I don’t have the exact numbers in front of me) so far between D-1 opponents. It’ll become fewer as the season goes on due to dual meets becoming more prevalent than tournaments later in the season, though.

If "snitches get stitches", I'll need to spend the entire gross domestic product of a mid-sized country to turn my skin into a mess consisting of more stitch than epidermis. Basically, I've been sending listings of matches every Monday that need to be changed from MFF to MFFL to the NWCA, as one of the two major software systems (Arena) doesn't have the functionality to log the countable medical forfeit, and I've seen the MFFL in a bracket on Track exactly once. In short, send all hate mail to me.

Women’s College Wrestling League Overview
SetonHallPirate replied to wrestle87's topic in College Wrestling
There are 75 teams, split into six regions (numbered 1-6, pretty similarly to how NCAA Division II is structured, but with some differences in the locations of teams...for example, Bluefield State is in Region 2 for women's, but Region 3 for D-2 men's). I believe, but am not sure, each team can enter 15 wrestlers into the regional tournament, and the top four from each region per weight qualifies for nationals. -

SetonHallPirate replied to Tom formerly Tofurky's topic in College Wrestling
UTEP is actually only a six-hour drive from Arizona State, believe it or not. (Heck, UTEP is closer to Arizona State than Tarleton State) -
Sure does...won't really matter in terms of qualifying though, as Hedges was not a Division I opponent.

"TWOOOOO" , when will it be "THREEEEEE"?

I’d direct you to the guy in charge of the NCAA when that decision was made, but given that he’s been dead since 2009, I don’t think he’s available for comment. -

D1 Tarleton State (TX) has a Head Coach?
SetonHallPirate replied to Tom formerly Tofurky's topic in College Wrestling
The number this VP quoted to me was more than that. But I suspect most A5 schools don’t want to start programs unless they have a shot at a national championship. Simply “existing” is not a goal for them. -
D1 Tarleton State (TX) has a Head Coach?
SetonHallPirate replied to Tom formerly Tofurky's topic in College Wrestling
Just pragmatic reality. Talked to an A5 University Vice President at the NWCA Convention over the summer and asked him what it would take to start a program at his institution, let’s just say the number they asked for was a kick-rocks number.
