  1. I would venture a guess that he might find luck sooner if there were still a 118 class. Hoping he can grow into the weight - some signs of that!
  2. Would be interesting to hear from the experienced wrestlers or coaches how you might guide a wrestler how to navigate a match with Lee. I cannot think of much. Maybe: do not choose down, better 1 than 2 if you are on top, and use your best control ties on your feet to slow him down and (in theory) work your own offense. Doubt any strategy works much better than: "try to have fun out there and stay relaxed!"
  3. I think it is up to the coaches and Levi and I will respect there decision. Guessing he is competing this year, but certainly a reason to let him have a redshirt year particulalry if he wants it.
  4. you Cornell guys are smart - I don't care what Lehigh fans keep saying about you!
  5. Quakers up 19-9 with two matches left. Some good action!
  6. Probably right - but sometimes the passion for a big match may lead to suprising decisions. Glory may want the sht at Vito and I bet Vito would welcome the challenge. Probably just my wish taht will not happen!
  7. Columbia might have its best team ever. Columbia just beat Princeton and Penn just beat Lehigh. Lineup possibilities from PennAthletics.com release (w records not updated for earlier weekend results): PROJECTED PENN LINEUP 125: #30 Ryan Miller (10-7) 133: #8 Michael Colaiocco (15-3) 141: Carmen Ferrante (11-8) 149: #11 Doug Zapf (14-5) 157: #12 Anthony Artalona (17-4) (was out Friday and Cole Spencer wrestled vs. Lehigh) 165: Lucas Revano (13-9) 174: #17 Nick Incontrera (16-5) 184: Maximus Hale (6-10), Connor Strong (6-1) 197: #33 Cole Urbas (11-8) 285: #32 Ben Goldin (12-9) PROJECTED COLUMBIA LINEUP 125: HM/32 Nick Babin (12-7) 133: HM/32 Angelo Rini (8-7) 141: HM/25 Matt Kazimir (11-5) 149: Danny Fongaro (12-8) 157: HM/26 Cesar Alvan (11-4) 165: 20/17 Joshua Ogunsanya (11-4) 174: HM/33 Lennox Wolak (10-5) 184: Aaron Ayzerov (11-5) 197: Javen Jovero (7-10), Jack Wehmeyer (6-5) 285: Danny Conley (8-9), Billy McChesney (10-9)
  8. If he wins EIWA tourney at 125 and is undefeated, I like his chances of at least a #3 seed which is moral equivalent of a #2 seed (which he probably gets). EIWA is not the B1G but pretty tough. As I have posted before, it is a slice of unfortunate foolishness to adopt seeding criteria that disregards the highly relevant results of a wrestler competing at an adjacent weight class. It is the kind of knucklehead thinking that has tended to plague NCAA seeding. For example, if Glory bumped up and beat Vito, that win should be disregarded entirely in seeding? Of course not. The people who made this rule should smack themselves thrice and quit tournament administration for good.
  9. 120, after placing in the (I think smaller school division) of the PIAA tourney at 106, and 113. https://www.statecollege.com/two-time-state-champion-gary-steen-flips-from-pitt-to-penn-state-wrestling/ "Steen — who projects as a 125-pounder in college — won the PIAA championship at 106 pounds as a freshman in 2018 and place third in 2019. Last year he moved up to 113 pounds and claimed his second Class 2A title with an overtime victory against South Park’s Joey Fischer. Wrestling at 120 pounds for his senior season, Steen is 12-0 on the year so far, including four pins and one tech fall. Steen, currently ranked No. 7 in the nation at 120 pounds by The Open Mat, joins Shayne Van Ness and Alex Facundo in Penn State’s 2021 recruiting class."
  10. He was a talented and accomplished schoolboy wrestler from PA and is a valauble asset in the PSU room probably best suited to develop being Howard for another year or two. Getting thrown to the B1G wolves now cannot be easy. I do not want to rush to any conclusions as to how he might develop. Some accomplished high school wrestlers get to a high level sooner and some later and of course some do not find whatever it takes to make it at the next level. Maybe he finds a way. It cannot be easy on him to be the one guy on the roster that the whole arena considers a success if he does not give up 6. I do not think it is a lack of character or commitment. Kid probably wants it as much as anyone. I feel a little bad for him watching him struggle. I think it is a noble struggle to keep trying in the face of tough odds in a sport where you are all alone and everyone is watching. So I wish him well and tip my hat that he is out there battling!
  11. Iowa has a chance if they get a few big breaks and make no big mistakes - but I think this is on PSU home mats. I think PSU finds a way.
  12. This is not crazy, but PSU wins one of the matches at 149 or 165 and maybe both. PSU gets bonus from at least one of 133, 174, and 184 and maybe in two of these matches. 197 and 285 could split, but lean slightly PSU. Pretty amazing that undersized Dean so often beats top full-sized 197lbers by bringing more whupass. Warner could find a way with a stallfest. The guys is a warrior but such a frigging bore to watch.
  13. Jimmy is being provactive, like a good pastry should! You should show Jimmy C some love for keeping us on our toes!
  14. Heard Columbia beat Princeton - nice to see some parity in the EIWA although everybody is chasing Cornell. Not easy to catch the Big Red wrestle machine.
  15. SVN, Bartlett, Facundo, and Haines - we've been watchng to see if they could be AA level and contenders and now it seem clearer that they could be at that level. The coaches probably have a good idea from the room, but the B1G dual schedule will further clarify. 7 or 8 AA's and multiple finalists and champs is a good strategy for NCAA team glory! Can't wait to see Jimmy C's Iowa prediction where the Hawkeyes take 6 of ten matches!
  16. What a fun dual with many contested matches! Is it clear that Haines will get the start? Bearclaw? Kerk has been mercurial and this will be interesting to see if he is at a new level. Nothing will surprise me in that match - hope they let it fly!
  17. Some good ones nominated above. A few more: Pentz 14th at 197 O'Malley 10th at 174 Zapf 11th at 149 At 149, I am not betting against Yianni, but I wonder if this might be the deepest weight overall. Yianni is something, the top 5 are very solid, experienced, and dangerous, and the next ten afer that has many guys that are close (top 15 has many spoilers). I saw the match between Parco and Johnson and they were both excellent. Millner at 9th says a lot - he is very tough.
  18. Not an easy thing to measure - but my sense as a fan is that Lee has been more dominant overall and his cumulative total on the NCAA whip ass scale is a bit higher. But Dake is an all timer as is Lee.
  19. I don't think it helps to post about who is the most arrogant. But there are some college wrestlers that are very confident! Yianni, Lee, Brooks, Starocci, and RBY are wrestlers (among others) that are confident. Winning NCAA titles is a good reason for the confidence. There is an art to how a confident wrestler communicates his confidence and remains very likeable and NIL marketable and it may related to avoiding the appearance of being arrogant - and some are better than others at this art. Probably should be a training program for this as NIL reaches college wrestling. Although there have been many other wrestlers who are excellent in conveying confidence without appearing arrogant, I thought the interview of Shane Griffith when he won the NCAA title and his program was on the chopping block was extraordinary. Might be good to use this video as a training tool to athletes on how to handle an interview.
  20. Nice tribute and well deserved. A good guy and his accomplishments have been extraordinary!
  21. I'd say Brooks is a little better at turning guys for points. Otherwise hard to say.
  22. Also, the claw, spiral, figure fouring the leg, tightwaist, cross wrist, Blair ride, double boots, arm bar, bottom leg turk, and half from the knees can cause discomfort and are keeping guys down - - should be banned!
  23. Is the plan to have Brooks bump up or recall Beard who is on loan from Lehigh? Can Carter bump up to cover 184, guessing he could.
  24. great matches - I think Cornell wins. But if V Tech can get one good upset and hold the line, they could do it.
