LACKSBURG -- The ninth-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling team used three bonus points to hold off 12th-ranked Virginia Sunday at the sold-out Moss Arts Center, winning 18-16 to claim its 10th win over the Cavaliers in the past 11 matchups. “I felt like we wrestled OK,” said Tech head coach Kevin Dresser. “I get it that it was a tough environment to wrestle in for our guys. They’ve been hearing about it and reading about it and seeing tweets and Facebook pictures and countdowns, so to be a little tentative and more tired than normal … that’s the way I would assess it. I think we got more tired in some situations than we normally do, but that come with nerves. I’ll take it, though. Any time you can beat the No. 12 team in the nation, I’ve got to be happy with it. I’m not 100 percent happy because we’ve got to take some steps in some weight classes. I feel like we didn’t charge enough, and this is a charging sport. We’ve got some work to do.” The match started at 174 pounds as the Cavs jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a 3-2 win from No. 7 Blaise Butler over No. 12 Zach Epperly. The Hokies took their first lead of the day at 184 when Austin Gabel rolled past James Suvak, picking up an 11-2 major decision. Zach Nye, ranked 18th in the country at 197 pounds, downed Tech’s Jared Haught 3-1 as UVa went back ahead. The Hokies then won two matches in a row to re-take the lead. Ty Walz, the No. 9 heavyweight in the country, downed Patrick Gillen 3-2 and then No. 4 Joey Dance cruised to a 14-4 major decision over Will Mason at 125 pounds. After the intermission, the Cavaliers took the next two matches as they went back ahead. No. 13 George DiCamillo defeated No. 19 Kevin Norstrem 4-0 at 133 pounds and then Justin Van Hoose beat Jerry Ronnau 8-4 at 141 pounds. The Hokies were wrestling without All-American and third-ranked Devin Carter, who suffered an injury during the week. Trailing 12-11, Sal Mastriani took the mat for the Hokies and the 12th-ranked 149-pounder dominated back-Chris Yankowich with a 19-6 major decision to give the Hokies the lead for good. Nick Brascetta, ranked fifth in the country at 157 pounds, returned to the mat after nearly three months missed due to an injury and picked up an 8-3 win over Andrew Atkinson to give Tech a six-point lead heading to the final bout. Nick Sulzer, ranked second in the country at 165 pounds, was able to pick up a 12-3 major decision over Chad Strube, but wasn’t able to get the pin he needed thanks to the three bonus points picked up by Gabel, Dance and Mastriani as the Hokies held on for the hard-fought win. “We knew coming in that we had our work cut out for us, and their stars shone brightly today,” Virginia coach head coach Steve Garland said. “That’s what won them the match – those bonus points. We’re a couple of guys down, but so are they. It was funny, this wasn’t one of those typical Virginia-Virginia Tech matches where you could predict it. This one was hard to predict. They had a last-second scratch, and we had two where it came down to last-second stuff. They definitely out-wrestled. It’s really simple. They deserved to win.” This match was presented by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of Virginia Tech Athletics. With a victory today from Virginia Tech wrestling, they have added a point for their school to the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash. The score for the Clash is now, University of Virginia 5.5 and Virginia Tech 2.5. Learn more about Virginia529 and this new competition at www.thecommonwealthclash.com. The event was held in the Moss Arts Center, a new performing arts building on campus and provided a unique experience for the teams and fans. “Our athletics directors and the people in our department did an awesome job of getting this thing ready to go from top to bottom,” Dresser said. “They’ve been on this thing. This is not just a media event, Virginia-Virginia Tech … this is a national event. People have been emailing me and Facebook-ing us that this is a cool thing, and so we want to keep it going. It was really cool from our perspective. I wish we would have gotten everybody a little louder. In the few situations where we got takedowns and then at the end when we had the match locked up in that last period, you could see the crowd really get into it. But we’ve got to start throwing guys on their back. When you get a chance to wrestle in a venue like this, you’ve got raise the roof, and we didn’t raise the roof enough today, I didn’t feel.” The Hokies (10-2, 1-0 ACC) will return to action at the Moss Arts Center next weekend, hosting No. 13 and defending ACC dual meet champion Pitt (7-4, 2-1 ACC) on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by NC State on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are still available for both matches and can be purchased online at vthoki.es/moss Results: No. 9 Virginia Tech 18, No. 12 Virginia 16 174: No. 7 Blaise Butler (UVa) dec. LARAMIE, Wyo. -- North Dakota State University 125-pounder Josh Rodriguez recorded his second straight overtime win over a ranked opponent, and 141 Mitch Bengtson and 149 Clay Ream each recorded pins as the Bison defeated 18th-ranked Wyoming 22-21 on criteria Sunday, Feb. 1, before 504 fans at the University of Wyoming Sports Complex. NDSU, which has won six straight duals, improves to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the WWC. The Cowboys drop to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the WWC. The Bison are scheduled to host Utah Valley University (2-6, 1-1 WWC) at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse. "It was a hard-fought dual against a talented and experienced team," said NDSU head coach Roger Kish. "We're getting better every week. We're a different team than we were in November and December. The energy has been picking up for us and that's what we've been seeing in the wrestling room." Rodriguez, a sophomore from Guadalupe, Calif. (Righetti H.S.), defeated 13th-ranked Tyler Cox 9-7 in tiebreaker-2 overtime. After a scoreless first period, Rodriguez recorded a takedown and near fall, while Cox countered with a pair of escapes and a takdown. The third period saw Rodriguez gain a takedown, but Cox rallied with an escape and a point awarded on NDSU stalling. The wrestlers were scoreless after the first OT period, and then each gained an escape for a 7-7 draw after a pair 30-second periods. Rodriguez recorded a near fall with 17-seconds left and held off Cox in the second tie-breaker. Rodriguez' win put the Bison ahead 21-17 heading into the final match. Rodriguez, who entered the weekend ranked 20th, posted back-to-back overtime wins over 9th-ranked Josh Martinez of Air Force and the 13th-ranked Cox. He has won nine of his last 11 matches to improve to 14-5 overall and 9-1 in dual action. Rodriguez is 4-3 against nationally-ranked opponents this season. "Josh (Rodriguez) had a little adversity. He was able to battle through it and get the win," said Kish. The dual started at 141 pounds where North Dakota State redshirt freshman Mitch Bengtson (St. Cloud, Minn.) started things with a fall over Wyoming's Cole Mendenhall at 4:54. Bengtson recorded his team-leading ninth pin. He is now 19-9 overall and 7-3 in duals. NDSU redshirt freshman Clay Ream (Wentzville, Mo.) followed with a fall over the Cowboys' Jake Elliott at the 5:50 mark to extend the Bison lead to 12-0. Ream, who has won 8 of his last 10 matches, improved to 20-9 overall and 9-1 in duals. He has seven pins on the season. "Both Mitch (Bengtson) and Clay (Ream) came out strong, stayed composed and were able to capitalize. They came out and scored big points for us," said Kish. Host Wyoming rallied to take a 13-12 lead after five matches with a pair of tech falls and a decision. At 157, Archie Colgan dispatched NDSU redshirt freshman Grant Nehring (Kimball, Minn.) 16-0 at 2:08, while 20th-ranked Dakota Friesth recorded a 18-2 tech fall at 6:12 over redshirt freshman Trevour Chavez (Bethel, Alaska) at 165. NDSU 174-pound senior Kurtis Julson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) lost a 4-1 decision to the Cowboys' 15th-ranked Andy McCulley. The teams went back and forth over the next three bouts. North Dakota State's 9th-ranked 184-pound junior Hayden Zillmer (Crosby, Minn.) started slow with a scoreless first period against 19th-ranked Ben Stroh, but built a 4-2 lead after two and posted a 10-4 decision. Zillmer improved to 26-4 overall and has won all 10 dual matches this season. Wyoming's 17th-ranked 197-pounder Shane Woods recorded a 12-1 major decision over redshirt freshman Tommy Petersen (Lakeville, Minn.), while NDSU's 15th-ranked Evan Knutson (Wausau, Wis.) held off Tanner Harms for a 6-4 decision at 285. That win put the Bison ahead 18-17 heading into the 125 bout. Knutson improved to 20-7 overall and 8-2 in duals this season. HEMPSTEAD, NY -- The Broncs won five bouts to defeat long-time rival Hofstra Sunday afternoon. “We’ve been banged up recently but we’re slowly getting people back into the lineup,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “Hopefully we’ll have everybody back soon.” For Rider (10-6, 1-1 EWL) freshman B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) won by fall in the final bout for the win. “It felt good to have BJ in that last match,” Taylor said of the deciding bout. “He did a nice job.” It was Clagon’s fifth pin of the season, improving to 19-7 overall, 12-4 in duals. Also for the Broncs, senior Donald McNeil (Plainville, Mass./Wyoming Seminary) returned from an injury, missing the last three matches, to win 12-6 at 197, giving Rider a 9-6 lead. “I knew we were not going to beat Hofstra if we did not have Donald and Conor (Brennan) back,” Taylor said, “and both of them did a good job doing what they needed to do to help the team.” Freshman Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) and junior Conor Brennan (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) also won, while junior Rob Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) won by forfeit. Rider and Hofstra were conference rivals from 1973-74 until last year, competing in the East Coast Conference, the East Coast Wrestling Association and the Colonial Athletic Association. “We’re in different conferences now but they are still an old rival so it is nice to defeat them,” Taylor said. This is the second year in a row that Rider has defeated Hofstra (5-9, 3-4 EIWA), but just the third time in the last 16 years. “Before last year they had our number for a while so hopefully we can have their number for a while,” Taylor said. Rider hosts former conference rival Drexel Friday. “Drexel has a good, balanced team,” Taylor said. “Hopefully we’ll be a little healthier for that match.” Results: 157 Chad Walsh-R dec. Conaway shot quickly off the whistle, getting in on a high single and turning it into a takedown and a 2-0 lead at the 2:28 mark. Rogaliner escaped to a 2-1 score and action resumed on the Spartan logo in the middle of the mat. Rogaliner then took a 3-2 lead with a takedown at the 1:30 mark and Conaway escaped to a 3-3 tie shortly thereafter. Conaway took a 5-3 lead with a second takedown at the :30 mark and then controlled Rogaliner from the top position for the rest of the period. Leading 5-3, Conaway chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 6-3 lead. He then quickly turned in to a low single, forced a scramble and finished off the takedown with :50 left in the period. After cutting Rogaliner loose, Conaway tripped the Spartan to the mat with a quick low double and led 10-4 after two. Rogaliner chose down to start the third period and escaped to a 10-5 score. Looking for bonus points, Conaway blew through Rogaliner's waist at the :48 mark and led 12-6 after cutting the Spartan loose. With a reset at the :17 mark and needing one more takedown for a major, Conaway looked to connect on a low shot but the Spartan was able to force a scramble and kill the clock. Conaway picked up a point on 1:36 riding time and grabbed the 13-6 win. 133: Sophomore Jimmy Gulibon (Latrobe, Pa.), ranked No. 9 at 133, tangled with Spartan Garth Yenter. The duo battled evenly for the first minute-plus until Gulibon connected on a high single. The Lion turned the shot into a takedown and a 2-0 lead. He then rode Yenter out to carry that lead, and 1:05 riding time, into the second period. Gulibon chose down to start the second period but was unable to break free of a strong Yenter ride. The Spartan controlled the action for over a minute before Gulibon escaped to a 3-0 lead. Trailing 3-0, Yenter chose down to start the third period and it was Gulibon's turn to control action from the top. Yenter was hit for a first stall warning at the :40 mark as Gulibon worked for a chance to turn the Spartan for back points. Gulibon got Yenter over for a one count by Yenter fought the effort off. Gulibon posted the 4-0 win with 1:33 in riding time. 141: Red-shirt freshman Kade Moss (South Jordan, Utah) wrestled Terry Turner at 141. Moss fought off an early Turner shot and then connected on his own high single, taking a 2-0 lead at the 2:11 mark. Moss then controlled the action from the top position for :38 before the Spartan escaped. Moss used another high single to take Turner down and led 4-2 after a quick MSU escape. Leading by two, Moss chose defense to start the second stanza and quickly escaped to a 5-2 lead. Acton resumed in the center circle where Turner tripped Moss to his back and picked up two near fall points to take a 6-5 lead. Moss escaped to a 6-6 tie with :05 left in the period. With the bout tied at 6-6, Turner chose down to start the third period. Moss was able to control the action on offense for :33 before Turner escaped to a 7-6 lead. Moss then retook the lead with a fast low single to takedown at the 1:14 mark, moving out in front 8-7. Moss was hit for a first stall warning at the :55 mark while trying to maintain control and then Turner escaped to an 8-8 tie with :37 left in the bout. Turner tried to connect on a single and Moss countered the move, working his way around behind the Spartan and finishing off the takedown with :05 left to grab the 10-8 win. 149: Sophomore Zack Beitz (Mifflintown, Pa.), ranked No. 18 at 149, took on junior Nick Trimble. Beitz looked to set the tempo early against the Spartan junior but Trimble was able to keep the Lion sophomore at arm's length and worked the clock under 1:00 still scoreless. Beitz snared Trimble's ankle with a low pick and then pulled the Spartan to him, finishing off the takedown to lead 2-0 with :53 left in the opening period. Beitz rode Trimble out and led by two with :53 in riding time after one period. Beitz chose down to start the second period and quickly worked his way around for a reversal and a 4-0 lead. Trimble escaped with 1:15 left in the period but Beitz was relentless, circling behind a Trimble shot for another takedown and a 6-1 lead with under a minute left in the period. Beitz led 6-1 with 2:11 riding time after two and Trimble chose neutral to start the third stanza. Beitz was unfazed, quickly taking Trimble down and cutting him loose to an 8-2 score with 1:20 left to wrestle. With the riding time point clinched, Beitz countered another low Trimble shot, whirling around behind the Spartan and finishing off a takedown on the edge of the mat. Beitz cut him loose on more time and then fought off a Trimble shot, scrambling his way to a final takedown and a 13-3 major with 2:28 in riding time. 157: Red-shirt freshman Cody Law (Windber, Pa.) took on MSU's Josh Pennell at 157. Law scored first, using a fast low single to take an early 2-1 lead after cutting Pennell loose. He continued his early offense, picking up a second takedown and cut to lead 4-2 with just under 2:00 to wrestle. Law had his offense working early, scoring on a third single leg to lead 6-2. He worked up :46 in riding time before cutting Pennell loose and then turned a low single into a fourth takedown and an early 8-3 lead. Law then rode Pennell out and carried that lead, plus 1:21 in riding time, into the second stanza. Law chose down to start the second period and worked his way to an escape and a 9-3 lead :30 into the period. He then worked a mid-shot into another takedown and cut to lead 11-4 at the 1:00 mark. Law tacked on one more takedown and cut before Pennell picked up a last second takedown. Trailing 13-7, Pennell chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped t a 13-8 score. Law was unfazed, however, and picked up yet another takedown to lead 15-9 after cutting Pennell loose. Law picked up another quick takedown and led 17-10 with riding time in his favor at the :45 mark. Law finished off the match with another takedown and rolled to the 22-11 major with 1:51 in riding time. 165: Red-shirt freshman Garett Hammond (Chambersburg, Pa.) tangled with junior Roger Wildmo. Hammond drew first blood, trying to connect on an early throw but settling for the takedown instead. The Lion freshman then controlled the MSU junior for over a minute, trying to turn him for back points during a strong ride. Wildmo was able to roll through each effort and escaped to a 2-1 score with 1:21 on the clock. Wildmo took a 3-2 lead with :40 on the clock, turning a low single leg into a takedown with :38 left in the opening period. Hammond quickly escaped to a 3-3 tie and then turned in to Wildmo trying to score in the period's final seconds. Wildmo held firm and the bout moved to the second stanza tied 3-3. Wildmo chose down to start the third period and Hammond was able to keep control, building up over 2:00 in riding time with a strong ride. Wildmo was able to roll through each turning effort and escaped to a 4-3 lead with :42 on the clock (Hammond had 2:06 in riding time). Hammond used a low shot to take a 5-4 lead with a takedown ad the :27 mark. Wildmo escaped to a 5-5 tie at the buzzer but Hammond had 2:27 in time. Hammond chose down to start the third and was hit with his third false start caution, giving Wildmo a point and a 6-5 lead. Hammond escaped to a 6-6 tie and had over 2:00 in riding time. Hammond forced Wildmo's shoulders to the mat and moved behind him for a takedown and an 8-7 lead after a quick Wildmo escape. The Spartan nearly scored at the :11 mark but action moved out of bounds. Hammond picked up one more point off 2:25 in riding time to post the 9-7 win. 174: Senior Matt Brown (West Valley City, Utah), ranked No. 3 at 174, met Nick Proctor. Brown scored quickly, using a low single to gain control of Proctor and work his way to a takedown and a 2-0 lead. After a bit of work up top, Brown cut Proctor loose and then quickly took him down a second time to lead 4-2 at the :50 mark. The Lion senior countered a Proctor shot, notched a third takedown with :25 left and cut him loose again. A fourth takedown at the :10 mark gave Brown an 8-3 lead after one. Brown chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 9-3 lead. Brown dominated the second period much like the first, adding three more takedowns in the first minute-plus. He then worked to turn the Spartan for back points over the last :30 and with just :06 left in the second stanza, got the fall at the 5:54 mark. The pin was the 30th of Brown's career, tied for 11th all-time at Penn State. 184: Red-shirt freshman Matt McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa.), ranked No. 17 at 184, battled senior John Rizqallah. The Lion freshman and the Spartan senior battled evenly for the bout's first two minutes before McCutcheon looked to score on a low single. Rizqallah tried to counter the shot but McCutcheon was able to continue to scramble, turning the single into a double and a 2-0 lead with :27 on the clock. A short ride out gave the Lion freshman a 2-0 lead after one period. McCutcheon chose down to start the third period but Rizqallah was strong on offense. McCutcheon was steady however, gaining control of Rizqallah's ankle, working his way around behind the Spartan and taking a 4-0 lead with a reversal. Rizqallah managed an escape but McCutcheon quickly turned shoulder control into a takedown on the edge of the mat and led 6-1 after two periods. Rizqallah chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 6-2 score. McCutcheon connected on a low single on the edge of the mat and picked up another takedown with :35 left to wrestle, upping his lead to 8-2. McCutcheon then rode Rizqallah out and posted the strong 8-2 win. 197: Junior Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calif.), ranked No. 5 at 197, met senior Nick McDiarmid. The veteran tandem battled evenly for nearly two minutes-plus with neither wrestler mounting a serious offensive charge. Action in the center of the mat consisted of hand fighting up top and the bout moved to the second period tied 0-0. McIntosh chose down to start the second period and steadily worked his way to an escape and a 1-0 lead. McIntosh tried to connect on a high single but McDiarmid was able to consistently back out of trouble to keep the Lion junior at arm's length. Trailing by one, McDiarmid chose down to start the third period and McIntosh was able to break the Spartan down on offense. McIntosh dominated action from the top position, building up over 1:00 in riding time while looking for a turning combination. McIntosh finished off the ride out and, with 1:35 in riding time, posted the 2-0 decision. 285: Lion senior Jimmy Lawson (Toms River, N.J.), ranked No. 6 at 285, battled Chris Nash. Lawson worked the middle of the mat, countering a Nash shot and then forcing his chest to the mat for a takedown and a 2-0 lead midway through the opening period. Lawson put together a strong ride, working Nash for a potential turning combination for over a minute before the Spartan escaped to a 2-1 score. Lawson once again forced Nash's shoulders to the mat and picked up a second takedown late in the period to lead 4-1 after one. Nash chose down to start the second period and Lawson continued to build up riding time. With over 2:00 in riding time, Lawson spent the latter half of the second period trying to turn Nash for back points. Nash escaped to a 4-2 score with :28 on the clock. Leading 4-2 with 2:58 in time, Lawson chose down to start the third period. A quick escaped gave the Lion senior a 5-2 lead with a clinched riding time point. Lawson tried to force the issue on offense but Nash was able to step back repeatedly to keep the Nittany Lion from picking up another takedown. Lawson added a final takedown at the :15 mark and, with a short ride out and 2:45 in riding time, posted the 8-2 win.

The No. 18 ranked Wyoming Cowboy wrestling team captured the final five matches of the night, including three falls by Dakota Friesth at 165 pounds, Shane Woods at 197 and Tanner Harms at 285 to record a convincing 32-10 home win over South Dakota State. Friday night marked the 100th dual during the seven years that Mark Branch has served as head coach of the Cowboys, and the victory was the 70th dual win for the Pokes during that span. The win was Wyoming's seventh consecutive dual victory this season and improved the Pokes' dual record to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the Western Wrestling Conference. South Dakota State fell to 8-7 and 1-1 in the WWC with the loss. Wyoming began the night with an 8-0 major decision by senior Tyler Cox, who is ranked No. 11 in the country at 125 pounds. That was followed by a 4-1 decision from Cowboy sophomore Drew Templeman at 133 to give Wyoming a 7-0 team lead. But South Dakota State fought back to win the next three matches. SDSU's Luke Zilverberg posted a 7-5 win over Wyoming's Cole Mendenhall at 141 pounds. Alex Kocer won by a 7-1 score over UW's Jake Elliott at 149, and the Jackrabbits' Cody Pack, who is ranked No. 6 in the nation, recorded a 12-2 major decision over Cowboy Archie Colgan at 157, moving the Jackrabbits into the lead by a team score of 10-7 at intermission. After the break, it was all Cowboys with senior Friesth winning by fall at the 4:30 mark of the 165-pound match versus John Nething. Friesth entered his match ranked No. 18 in the nation. Fellow senior Andy McCulley, ranked 15th in the country, won a close 5-3 match at 174 pounds to put Wyoming up 16-10. A 14-3 major decision by Wyoming's No. 19 ranked Benjamin Stroh at 184 followed. Senior Woods recorded the quickest fall of the evening only 1:47 into the first period of the 197-pound match over SDSU's Hunter Weddington. Woods entered the match ranked No. 15 in the nation. Cowboy junior Tanner Harms finished off the convincing win with a fall over the Jackrabbits' J.J. Everard 2:17 into the first period. After the dual, Branch spoke to the media about what he saw from his Cowboy squad. "We need to be more aggressive. Even in some wins I wasn't real happy," said Branch. "Obviously in the losses, I didn't think we wrestled with a lot of emotion. But then we saw some emotion in the second half of the dual, which is nice, and we saw some good performances. Pins are always good, so that got me in a better mood finishing with a couple pins. "If you could point to two guys, I think Tanner (Harms) came out aggressive against a kid who beat him last year. He came out in the first five seconds and took a nice shot and got the takedown. He was really a hammer on top, and got the pin. The second guy tonight was Drew Templeman. Drew has been right there, trying to break through and tonight he got a good win over a good kid. He's been in several matches like he was today, but he's lost a little discipline and not been able to close it out. Tonight it was good to see him close it out with a solid takedown in the third period. "There were some good things, but all 10 guys didn't come out and wrestle the way we're supposed to wrestle. We've got to get better, especially before Sunday." Wyoming returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 1 when they will host WWC rival North Dakota State at Noon in the UniWyo Sports Complex. Results: 125 pounds: #13/11/14 Tyler Cox, major decision over Isaac Andrade (SDSU), 8-0 / Wyoming 4, SDSU 0 133: Drew Templeman, decision over Brance Simms (SDSU), 4-1 / Wyoming 7, SDSU 0 141: Luke Zilverberg (SDSU), decision over Cole Mendenhall, 7-5 / Wyoming 7, SDSU 3 149: Alex Kocer (SDSU), decision over Jake Elliott, 7-1 / Wyoming 7, SDSU 6 157: #7/11/6 Cody Pack (SDSU), major decision over Archie Colgan, 12-2 / Wyoming 7, SDSU 10 165: #20/NR/18 Dakota Friesth, wins by fall (4:30) over John Nething II (SDSU), Fall (4:30) / Wyoming 13, SDSU 10 174: #15/17/17 Andy McCulley, decision over David Kocer (SDSU), 5-3 / Wyoming 16, SDSU 10 184: #19/NR/NR Benjamin Stroh, major decision over Brady Ayers (SDSU), 14-3 / Wyoming 20, SDSU 10 197: #17/18/15 Shane Woods, wins by fall (1:47) over Hunter Weddington (SDSU), Fall (1:47) / Wyoming 26, SDS 10 285: Tanner Harms, wins by fall (2:17) over J.J. Nick Moore pinned Brandon Kingsley to give Iowa a 6-0 lead after the opening match (Photo/Mark Beshey, The Guillotine)MINNEAPOLIS -- Iowa's Nick Moore set the tone early and helped jump-start his team in a big dual meet in front of a big crowd. The Hawkeye senior 165-pounder opened Friday night's dual meet against top-ranked Minnesota by pinning Brandon Kingsley, which helped propel Iowa to a 23-12 victory in front of 13,630 fans at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. After giving up the first takedown, Moore battled back to tie the match at 2-2 in the second period. He then countered a Kingsley attack and used a whipover to pin the Gopher sophomore at 4:27. "He got a dose of some heavy hips and then it just felt good when I locked it up," said Moore, who is ranked seventh at 165 pounds. "It was a good hold." The Hawkeyes carried the momentum to 174 pounds, where second-ranked Mike Evans remained undefeated on the season with a 3-1 win in sudden victory over fourth-ranked Logan Storley. The two Big Ten rivals traded escapes in the second and third periods. Then, 27 seconds into sudden victory, Evans shot a double leg and Storley attempted to counter by rolling through, but the Hawkeye senior was awarded the match-winning takedown. It was Evans' second straight win over Storley, who still leads their all-time series 3-2. "He tried to scramble out, but it's overtime," said Evans. "With the rules that got implemented over the past like two years, when you get put down, it's two. That's it. It's over, especially in overtime." Mike Evans scored off a double leg in sudden victory to defeat Logan Storley (Photo/Mark Beshey, The Guillotine)Iowa coach Tom Brands was pleased with Evans' win, but still expects more from his senior two-time All-American. "That's a big win for him," said Brands of Evans' victory over Storley. "That was probably the match of the meet, so good for Evans. But when you're taking a guy down there you don't relax even on a whistle. You wrestle that situation just like it's regulation. Keep your hips down." At 184 pounds, Iowa's Sammy Brooks stretched the Hawkeyes' lead to 12-0 by registering a 13-7 decision over No. 11 Brett Pfarr in a pivotal match. The eighth-ranked Brooks gave up the opening takedown, but responded with a takedown of his own in the first period and added two takedowns in each of the last two periods to pull away for a comfortable victory. Minnesota got on the scoreboard at 197 pounds when sixth-ranked Scott Schiller edged previously unbeaten Nathan Burak, 3-1, to cut the deficit to 12-3. With the match tied 1-1, Schiller scored the only takedown of the match in the final five seconds off a double leg. Iowa's Bobby Telford picked up a 6-4 over No. 13 Michael Kroells at heavyweight to extend Iowa's lead to 15-3 at intermission. The Hawkeyes came out of intermission strong as Thomas Gilman scored early and often in a 23-7 technical fall victory over true freshman Ethan Lizak at 125 pounds. "He's really offensive and getting to his best stuff, and it really doesn't matter if you scout him because he's fast, and I call that wrestling fast," Brands said of Gilman, who earned his 20th victory in 21 matches this season. Chris Dardanes takes Cory Clark to the mat in a 5-3 victory (Photo/Mark Beshey, The Guillotine)Minnesota seniors Chris Dardanes and Nick Dardanes earned wins at 133 pounds and 141 pounds respectively to cut the deficit to 21-9 with two matches remaining. Chris Dardanes used takedowns in the first and third periods to earn a 5-3 victory over No. 5 Cory Clark. Nick Dardanes opened up a 2-1 match in the third period against No. 5 Josh Dziewa with an escape and two takedowns for a convincing 7-2 win. At 149 pounds, Iowa's second-ranked Brandon Sorensen and Minnesota's Jake Short battled to scoreless tie after two periods. In the third period Sorensen earned an early escape and late takedown to win 4-0 with an additional point added for riding time. The freshman Sorenson is now 25-2 on the season. In the final match of the dual meet, top-ranked Dylan Ness of Minnesota, who has battling a sickness all week, earned a gutty, come-from-behind 11-9 victory over No. 15 Mike Kelly at 157 pounds. Kelly led 8-5 in the third period before Ness scored a takedown off a bear hug with two nearfall points to take the lead and then held on for the win to remain unbeaten on the season at 23-0. Dylan Ness came from behind to defeat Mike Kelly (Photo/Mark Beshey, The Guillotine)"Dylan Ness showed a tremendous amount of courage for what he did tonight," said Minnesota coach J Robinson. "If you go back and watch the match you can tell in about the first minute, minute and a half that it wasn't Dylan Ness. But that's a great example of a heart of a champion. "He's a thoroughbred. You give him a chance to run and he's going to run and he's going to do what he has to do. He did it for himself and he did it for his team. I think that's an unbelievable amount of courage for a guy this young to do that kind of thing." With the dual meet victory, Iowa improves to 11-0 overall and 6-0 in the Big Ten, which gives the Hawkeyes sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. However, it would be hard to tell that was the case listening to the winning coach after the dual meet. "Overall, we've got work to do," said Brands. "Even Gilman's got work to do. We've just got to keep putting an edge on these guys. I don't think it's a matter of putting a grade on it as much as it is to keep moving forward." Minnesota drops to 10-1 on the season and 6-1 in the conference. "We just didn't come out and wrestle the way we should have tonight," said Schiller. "We kind of started off on the wrong foot. It's hard to come out of a hole like that. In any match you definitely don't want to start off down in a hole like that, but we've got to find a way to win." It was the second-largest crowd ever to witness a Gopher/Hawkeye dual meet. "I was happy with the crowd, but I wasn't happy for the crowd," said Robinson, who is in his 29th season as Minnesota's head wrestling coach. "We didn't give them a show." BLOOMSBURG, PA -- The short-handed Broncs, with just five starters in the lineup, won six of 10 bouts to defeat Bloomsburg in an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet Friday. “I feel good getting a conference win,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “Anytime you can get a win with five guys out you have to feel good. It is tough competing at 50 percent.” For Rider (9-6, 2-1 EWL) freshman Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) won by fall, his fourth pin of the season, to improve to 22-6 on the season, giving Rider a 17-3 lead. Freshman B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) won a major decision to improve to 18-7 on the season. Senior Chuck Zeisloft (Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gateway) won in overtime to give Rider a 7-3 lead. “Chuck did a nice job of getting that takedown in overtime,” Taylor said. “That was a very close match.” Junior Rob Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) won a major decision to improve to 18-6 overall, 12-3 in duals and 3-0 in the EWL. “Rob really worked hard, him and BJ and Chad got bonus points for us tonight,” Taylor said. “That really helped us. It (being shorthanded) puts added pressure on them but thankfully they are guys who can handle that. They are capable of stepping up.” Junior Greg Velasco (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport) won for the final score. “We thought we would win at heavyweight and Greg did,” Taylor said. “The (substitute) wrestlers who were put in tonight fought hard,” Taylor said, “and that is all you can ask. They did a good job. They did what they could do.” Rider defeated Bloomsburg 20-16 last season, giving Coach Taylor milestone win number 400. Rider and Bloomsburg have now met 15 times, with Rider winning nine. Rider travels to former conference rival Hofstra Sunday afternoon. “Hopefully we can get a few of our wrestlers back for Sunday,” said Taylor, who now has 413 career wins. “Hofstra is solid again this year. They are a good team. It is going to be a tough match. If we don’t get a couple of our wrestlers back it is going to be a real tough match.” Results: 125 Jon Haas-B dec. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team won its 10th match of the season with a near-perfect 36-3 victory against Davidson. The Mocs were a one-point loss away from a shutout, while improving to 10-5 overall and 5-0 in SoCon action. The Wildcats drop to 4-10, 0-3 in SoCon matches. “Another good win for us today, stated head coach Heath Eslinger. “You are always going to have some error, we just hope we eliminate all of it by the time we get to the Southern Conference tournament and the NCAA Tournament. Regardless, it was a good day of wrestling and thanks to all of the faculty and staff who came out to see a lunch time dual.” Davidson forfeited at 125 and Chattanooga scored bonus points in four of the other nine bouts. That was more than enough to improve the Mocs all-time record against the Wildcats to 23-0. Sophomore Michael Pongracz (141) and freshman Jacob Murphy (149) both had major decisions while freshman Justin Lampe (165) and sophomore Jared Johnson (285) scored technical falls. Chattanooga held a 30-4 advantage in takedowns, with 11 of those put on the board by Lampe in his win over Patric Devlin. Lampe jumped out to a quick lead with five takedowns in the first period alone. He finished with a 23-8 victory to improve to 3-2 in SoCon matches. Johnson controlled his match throughout, getting nine back points in a 17-0 win over Will Cooley. He nearly had Cooley pinned twice before the buzzer saved the fall. Johnson is a team-best 25-6 overall and 5-0 in SoCon action. Senior Nick Soto scored career win No. 109 with an 8-3 decision over Anthony Elias at 133. He is now tied for sixth on UTC’s all-time wins list with Ben Reichel (109-37-2 - 1985-89). The Mocs hit the road next weekend for a visit to Appalachian State. UTC can wrap up at least a share of its third-straight SoCon regular season title with a win over the Mountaineers. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) in Boone, N.C. The Mocs have won 14 titles since the league starting recognizing a season champion in 1994. Chattanooga also has 28 tournament trophies since joining the SoCon in 1978. KENT, Ohio -- Kent State improved to 3-2 in Mid-American Conference duals with a 25-9 victory over Eastern Michigan Friday night at the M.A.C. Center. With over 2,000 in attendance, the Golden Flashes made it a Beauty & The Beast sweep for the third straight year as Kent State's gymnastics team defeated Pittsburgh. "One of our goals is beat all of the core MAC schools, and so far we're on track to do that," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said of the Flashes' wins over Eastern Michigan, Ohio and Buffalo. After splitting the first four matches, Ian Miller started a string of four straight Kent State victories with a 19-4 technical fall over Brandon Zeerip. Miller kept the gas pedal down throughout the third period, scored a takedown with under five seconds left and rode Zeerip out to secure the tech fall with riding time. "Ian just overwhelms his opponents," Andrassy said. "He and Tyler Small both worked real hard to get us extra team points." Small beat the final buzzer with a reversal to secure a 9-1 major decision. After a second period reversal, Small immediately locked up a cradle that turned into a three-point near fall for a 7-0 lead. Junior Tyler Buckwalter found himself in a back-and-forth battle that was tied 5-5, before pulling away with a 9-5 victory. Both wrestlers recorded three-point near falls in the first period. Junior Caleb Marsh had a huge first period in his 12-2 major decision over Kanye MacCallum. In his first match in over a month, Marsh turned MacCallum with a bow-and-arrow three times in the first, racking up nine near fall points. Scrappy redshirt freshman Jerald Spohn overcame a 3-2 deficit after a period to down Mike Curby 6-4. "Jerald still makes a lot of mistakes, but he works so hard, it wins him matches," Andrassy said. Sophomore Mimmo Lytle improved to 5-0 in MAC duals with a 9-3 victory over Gage Hutchison. Lytle broke things open with a third period reversal, before building up riding time. "Any time you can score nine points as a heavyweight, you're putting yourself in great position to win," Andrassy said. Junior Del Vinas started the night with a 6-4 victory against Blake Caudill. Vinas scored takedowns in the second and third periods, erasing a two-point deficit early in the second. "Del was still a little hesitant," Andrassy said. "I think he could have scored a lot more." Junior Mack McGuire suffered his first conference loss, a 4-2 setback to Vincent Pizzuto in overtime. Pizzuto locked up a cradle from the neutral position and scooted behind McGuire for the takedown. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A technical fall at 165 pounds by Bo Jordan and a major decision at 197 pounds from Kyle Snyder allowed fourth-ranked Ohio State to pull away for a 24-9 victory over No. 21 Purdue on Friday night in wrestling action at St. John Arena. Ohio State, winners of six straight, is now 10-3 overall and 6-1 in the Big Ten while Purdue falls to 8-6, 1-4. In addition to Jordan and Snyder’s wins, Ohio State also received a key 6-0 decision from 13th-ranked Mark Martin at 174 pounds and an 8-3 decision from No. 12 Kenny Courts at 184 pounds. He also racked up over a minute of riding time to earn the bonus point at the end of the third period. DiJulius, who moved to 21-2 on the year, scored his points on a takedown in the first period (2:15) and third period (0:47). Three-time national champion Logan Stieber kept his perfect 2014-15 record intact with a hard-fought 4-0 decision over Nick Lawrence at 141 pounds. Stieber scored points on a takedown in the second period, escape in the third and riding time. After Purdue won by decision at both 149 pounds and 157 pounds, Jordan earned a key momentum-swinging technical fall at 165 pounds to give the Buckeyes a 14-6 lead. He jumped out over Pat Robinson early, taking a 7-0 lead after the first period and then finishing him off with an impressive second period that saw six takedowns. Jordan, ranked fifth nationally, is 12-0 on the season and 35-0 in his career. Martin’s win at 174 pounds came thanks to a five-point third period and bonus point for riding time. Knotted a 0-0 headed to the third, Martin got a two-point near-fall (1:43) and three-point near-fall (0:30) while also racking up over two minutes of riding time. Courts continued the Buckeye winning streak with an 8-3 decision over Patrick Kissel at 184 pounds. Courts notched two first-period takedowns, a reversal in the third and another takedown just before time expired to earn his 17th win of the year. Snyder, a true freshman from Woodbine, Md., notched his 20th win of the year with a dominating 18-7 major decision over Tanner Lynde at 197 pounds. He jumped out to a 6-2 first-period lead and then quickly extended it with an escape and takedown early in the second period. Snyder added two takedowns in the period and two more in the third while also getting the riding time bonus point. The Buckeyes are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 1 when they travel to New Brunswick, N.J. for a noon tilt with No. 22 Rutgers at the sold-out College Avenue Gymnasium. Purdue, with their new coaching staff, prides themselves on being a team in top condition and with a lot of fight. Our guys that were aggressive and attacking were fun to watch.” Logan Stieber’s match “Credit for the kid. Logan has to find a way to break through that. He’s not feeling well but we needed him to compete so we wrestled him.” Preview of Rutgers and thoughts on Minnesota vs. Penn State “I was focusing on this. 13,000 people showed up and that is a beautiful thing for the sport of wrestling. I think we will have that many people at Buckeye matches sometime soon. Rutgers is similar to Purdue. They’re ranked and there are some weight classes that we are definitely going to face some challenges.” Redshirt freshman Bo Jordan On his match “After I got the second takedown in the second period, I felt his intensity go down. At the point I smelled blood in the water and kicked it up a notch.” On competing in the Schott “It’s going to be awesome. First time we wrestled here was Iowa and we got a ton of people here. I can’t imagine being in the Schott, I feel like we will get more of an awesome atmosphere. It will be Logan’s dual meet and Josh’s and Ray’s. Hopefully we will tear it up on Minnesota.”

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team won four of the first five bouts and six of ten to down No. 15 Michigan for a Big Ten dual meet win. Head coach Cael Sanderson's squad got big wins in the lower weights to post a 19-15 win in front of a sold-out Cliff Keen Arena crowd in Ann Arbor. The dual meet began at 125 where Lion junior Jordan Conaway (Abbottstown, Pa.), ranked No. 8, put Penn State up early with a hard-fought 3-2 decision over Michigan's Conor Youtsey. Penn State junior Jimmy Gulibon (Latrobe, Pa.), ranked No. 9 at 133, was dominant in a 9-3 win over No. 8 Rossi Bruno to give Penn State a 6-0 lead. Gulibon posted three takedowns in the bout. At 141, red-shirt freshman Kade Moss (South Jordan, Utah) notched his biggest win of the season today, using a reversal and two different two-point near falls to roll to a 6-3 victory over No. 17 George Fisher. Sophomore Zack Beitz (Mifflintown, Pa.), ranked No. 18 at 149, kept Penn State rolling with a 6-4 win over No. 9 Alex Pantaleo. Beitz used a last second takedown to post the win and put the Nittany Lions up 12-0. Penn State junior Luke Frey (Montoursville, Pa.) made his Nittany Lion dual meet debut at 157, taking on No. 13 Brian Murphy of Michigan. Frey battled Murphy tough through seven minutes before dropping a hard-fought 3-1 decision. With four wins in the opening five bouts, Penn State led 12-3 at intermission. Michigan's Taylor Massa cut Penn State's lead to 12-6 with a 6-3 win over red-shirt freshman Garett Hammond (Chambersburg, Pa.) at 165. Lion senior Matt Brown (West Valley City, Utah), ranked No. 3 at 174, halted Michigan's brief momentum with a convincing 12-2 major over Wolverine senior Jake Salazar. The win put Penn State up 16-6 and marked the dual's first bonus point. Michigan got right back into the dual, however, with a pin at 184. No. 10 Domenic Abounader got a second period fall over red-shirt freshman Matt McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa.), ranked No. 17. The pin came at the 3:52 mark and cut Penn State's lead to 16-12. Junior Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calif.), ranked No. 5 at 197, clinched the dual meet with a big win in the next match. The Lion used a third period takedown to post a 3-2 decision over No. 8 Max Huntley to put Penn State up 19-12 and secure the Big Ten dual meet road victory. Michigan closed out the dual with a win at 285 as No. 7 Adam Coon downed Penn State senior Jon Gingrich (Wingate, Pa.) 5-2. Penn State owned a slim 11-8 edge in takedowns in the closely contested dual and picked up its lone bonus point with Brown's major at 174. Penn State is now 9-2, 5-2 in the Big Ten. Michigan stands at 5-4, 3-3 in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions will trek to East Lansing to face the Michigan State Spartans on Super Bowl Sunday. Conaway drew first blood with a takedown at the 2:06 mark and led 2-1 after a Youtsey escape :35 later. The duo battled evenly for the next minute plus with Youtsey looking to control Conaway's shoulders and the Lion junior keeping things neutral on his feet. Trailing by one, Youtsey chose defense to start the second stanza and quickly escaped to a 2-2 tie. Conaway worked the middle of the mat, working for an opening but not finding any space. With the bout tied 2-2, Conaway chose down to star the final period. The Nittany Lion junior steadily worked his way to an escape and a 3-2 lead with 1:42 on the clock. With riding time not a factor, both men began looking for a critical and, perhaps, bout clinching takedown. Youtsey worked his way into control of Conaway's left leg, forcing a long scramble in the middle of the mat that ended in a stalemate with :27 on the clock. Conaway shot low at the :15 mark and but could not finish off a takedown before time ran out. Still, the move allowed the Lion to kill clock and post the 3-2 win. 133: Sophomore Jimmy Gulibon (Latrobe, Pa.), ranked No. 9 at 133, met No. 8 Rossi Bruno. The first two minutes of the match were contested in the middle of the mat with each man working from their feet. Gulibon used shoulder control with :49 on the clock to force Bruno's shoulders down and slid behind the Wolverine for a takedown and a 2-0 lead. Gulibon's strong ride allowed him to keep control for the rest of the period and lead 2-0 after one. Bruno chose down to start the second period and Gulibon was once again strong on offense. The Lion sophomore maintained control for the entire period, maintaining control while looking for a chance to turn Bruno for near fall points. Gulibon's strong ride sent him to the third period with a 2-0 lead and 2:49 in riding time. Gulibon chose down to start the third period and worked his way to an escape and a 3-0 lead at the 1:24 mark. As the clock worked its way to 1:00, Gulibon had the riding time point clinched. Gulibon tacked on one more takedown and cut Bruno loose at the :15 mark, gave up a quick takedown but quickly escaped and picked up a final takedown to roll to a 9-3 win (with 2:18 in riding time). 141: Red-shirt freshman Kade Moss (South Jordan, Utah) battled George Fisher, ranked No. 17 at 141. Moss was the aggressor out of the gate, looking to score on a couple early flurries. But Fisher was quick on defense and then began to mount his own charge in the late part of the opening period. Moss finished off the period in on a single leg, but Fisher fought the effort off and the bout moved to the second stanza scoreless. Fisher chose down to start the second period and Moss made the Wolverine pay with a standing throw for two near fall points. Fisher escaped at the 1:10 mark and Moss led 2-1. Fisher took the lead quickly with a strong takedown with :35 left in the period. Moss was unable to escape as the period ended and trailed 3-2 heading into the final period. Trailing by one, Moss chose down to start the third period. He steadily worked his way to a reversal and then tacked on two more back points to open up a 6-3 lead with just 1:10 left in the bout. Moss then dominated the action from the top position, winding out the clock with a strong ride to bring the clock to zeroes and post the 6-3 win. 149: Sophomore Zack Beitz (Mifflintown, Pa.), ranked No. 18 at 149, faced off against No. 9 Alex Pantaleo. The duo battled evenly early on with Pantaleo taking a 2-1 lead with a fast takedown at the 1:40 mark. Beitz had his next two shots stifled by Pantaleo, who was able to push back the Lion sophomore's efforts and hold onto the one point lead after one period. Beitz chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 2-2 tie. Beitz then shot low, using an ankle pick for a takedown and a 4-2 lead at the 1:10 mark. Pantaleo quickly escaped and Beitz led 4-3 with under a minute to wrestle in the period. Beitz nearly connected on another low single but Pantaleo was able to step out of trouble. Down 4-3, Pantaleo chose down to start the third period. He quickly escaped to a 4-4 tie with 1:42 left and action resumed in the center circle. After a reset at the :43 mark, Beitz shot low and Pantaleo countered. Beitz readjusted, countered around behind the Wolverine and notched the winning takedown at the buzzer. The final takedown gave the Lion the 6-4 win. 157: Penn State junior Luke Frey (Montoursville, Pa.) wrestled No. 13 Brian Murphy at 157. Frey was equal to the task early on, fighting off Murphy's early efforts while looking for an opening of his own. After two scoreless minutes, Murphy got in on a single leg, forcing a scramble that lasted nearly a minute. The Wolverine was able to finish off the takedown to lead 2-0 at the :13 mark. Leading 2-0, Murphy chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 3-0 lead. Murphy gained control of Frey's leg on a high single, forcing another protracted scramble. This one ended in a stalemate with :26 left on the clock. Trailing 3-0, Frey chose down to start the final period and quickly escaped to a 3-1 deficit. Frey upped the tempo in the middle of the mat, trying to force the ranked Wolverine's shoulders to the mat. But Murphy was able to stay on his feet and worked his way in on another shot, forcing another long scramble that ended in a stalemate with just :27 left to wrestle. Murphy shot low, Frey countered and had the Wolverine turned to his back. But no control was called and not takedown given as the buzzer sounded. The Penn State bench asked for an official review but the call stood as no takedown and Frey dropped the 3-1 decision. 165: Red-shirt freshman Garett Hammond (Chambersburg, Pa.) battled Michigan sophomore Taylor Massa at 165. Massa scored quickly, using a low double to open up a 2-0 lead. The Wolverine built up a :59 riding time edge before Hammond escaped to a 2-1 score. Massa quickly picked up another takedown and opened up a 4-1 lead. Hammond escaped to a 4-2 score with :25 left and action resumed in the middle of the mat. Trailing by two, Hammond chose down to start the second period. Massa controlled the action, however, building up over 3:00 in riding time before Hammond escaped with just :10 left in the period. Massa, with a 4-3 lead and a clinched riding time point, chose down to start the third period. Hammond worked form the top for 1:30 trying to turn the Wolverine but eventually cut him loose to a 5-3 score. With 1:59 in riding time, Massa posted the 6-3 win. 174: Senior Matt Brown (West Valley City, Utah), ranked No. 3 at 174, met Michigan's Jake Salazar. The Lion senior was steady from the outset, slowly working his way into position and taking a 2-0 lead with a takedown at the 1:46 mark. Brown then controlled the action from the top position for :50 before Salazar escaped. Brown countered a quick Salazar shot, working his way behind his opponent for another takedown and a 4-1 lead. Brown built up a 1:33 riding time edge with a ride out and led 2-0 after the opening period. Salazar chose down to start the second period and Brown spent the period trying to turn Salazar to his back. The Wolverine was able to fight off the near fall effort by Brown but the Lion's ride out gave him a 4-1 lead with a clinched riding time point (3:32) after two periods. Brown chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 5-1 lead. He then picked up a quick takedown on a low single, picked up another point on a Salazar stall and then cut the Wolverine loose. He quickly added another takedown and led 10-2 with :30 left. A final stall and 4:37 in riding time allowed Brown to post the convincing 12-2 major decision. 184: Red-shirt freshman Matt McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa.), ranked No. 17 at 184, took on No. 10 Domenic Abounader. The duo battled evenly out of the gates, with McCutcheon owning the inside position as Abounader worked the margins of the mat. Abounader used a quick shot in the center of the mat to take a 2-0 lead with :44 left on the clock. A ride out gave the Wolverine and McCutcheon trailed 2-0 after one period. The Nittany Lion freshman took down to start the second stanza and Abounader took advantage. The Wolverine steadily turned McCutcheon to his back with arm control and got the pin at the 3:52 mark. 197: Junior Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calif.), ranked No. 5 at 197, faced off against No. 8 Max Huntley. McIntosh and Huntley battled evenly for the opening three minutes with each wrestler trying to control the other from their feet. The bout moved to the second stanza in a scoreless tie and McIntosh chose down to begin the second period. A quick escape gave the Nittany Lion junior a 1-0 lead and action resumed in the center circle with 1:32 left in the second period. Huntley tried to connect on a high single with :40 on the clock, but McIntosh stepped out of trouble to keep his one point lead. Huntley chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 1-1 tie. McIntosh notched the bout's first takedown, turning a low single into a takedown and a 3-1 lead. Huntley escaped to a 3-2 deficit with :53 left and action was stopped for blood. With riding time not a factor, the wrestlers battled in the middle of the remainder of the period with McIntosh fighting off Huntley's shots to post the 3-2 win and clinch the dual meet. 285: Penn State senior Jon Gingrich (Wingate, Pa.), took to the mat against No. 7 Adam Coon of Michigan at 285. Each wrestler worked for control in the middle of the mat with neither wrestler breaking through for any offense. Gingrich was hit with an early stall warning at the 1:15 mark, however. Coon tried to connect on a high single that Gingrich was able to step away from and the bout ended the opening period in a scoreless tie. Coon chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead. Coon continued to pressure Gingrich and picked up a point on a second Gingrich stall to lead 2-0 with :38 on the clock. Trailing 2-0, Gingrich chose down to start the third period. Gingrich escaped to a 2-1 deficit with 1:10 left and riding time not a factor. The Lion senior dove low at Coon's feet and did not connect, allowing Coon to counter the shot and post a takedown to lead 4-1 with :35 on the clock. Gingrich managed a late escape but Coon, with 1:18 in riding time, was able to post the 5-2 win.
