  1. BROOKINGS, S.D. -- South Dakota State (11-7, 3-1 WWC) beat Stanford (11-4, 4-1 Pac-12) 17-15 in front of a record 918 fans in Frost Arena in the latter half of men’s basketball/wrestling doubleheader. The Jacks and Cardinal both won five matches, but #7 Cody Pack’s tech fall at 157 proved to be the difference. “We preach it every dual how important bonus point are and we saw it come to fruition tonight,” head coach Chris Bono said. “I’m proud of the effort our guys brought to the mat tonight.” Following an opening loss at 125, Brance Simms started a string of four straight Jackrabbit wins. “I put this dual on Bubba,” Bono added. “I told him if he wins, we win. He’s a tough kid and he performed.” The junior battled his way to a 6-4 win over #21 Connor Schram in sudden victory. Schram took a 3-1 lead into the third, but Simms escaped early and recorded a takedown with a little over a minute remaining in the third. Simms rode the momentum and scored the clinching takedown just over 20 seconds into overtime. Redshirt freshman Luke Zilverberg gave SDSU a 6-3 lead with a 7-2 decision over Mason Pengilly. Zilverberg struck first and added a reversal in the third for the 7-2 tally. #29 Alex Kocer and Garrett Schaner went back-and-forth in the first before Schaner recorded a takedown. Kocer scored a reversal and got two nearfall in the final seconds for a 4-2 lead. Following a scoreless second, Kocer escaped and added riding time in the third. #7 Pack dominated from the opening whistle and got his seventh tech fall of the year over Josh Lauderdale, 18-3. Pack recorded multiple takedowns in all three periods and added nearfall in the second and third. Stanford answered with three wins to close the team score to 14-12. #24 Nate Rotert got SDSU back on the board with a 4-3 decision over Garet Krohn, which was decided on riding time. Rotert got a takedown in the first and added an escape in the second before Krohn tied it up with an escape and takedown of his own in the third. In the 285-lb finale, Stanford’s Josh Marchok won in sudden victory over J.J. Everard, 6-4. SDSU closes out its dual season Sunday, February 22 against North Dakota State with the Western Wrestling Conference on the line. Wrestling is set for 2 p.m. “We got our rival in our arena with the conference title on the line,” Bono said. 2. BLACKSBURG -- The ninth-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling team claimed the ACC dual meet title with a 22-15 win over Duke Saturday night in Cassell Coliseum. Joey Dance, ranked fourth in the country at 125 pounds, led off the meet and cruised to a 22-7 (6:36) technical fall over Thayer Atkins after picking up three takedowns and back points in the first period. In the next match, Duke got on the board when Mitch Finesilver picked up a 12-6 decision over Kevin Norstrem. Devin Carter, ranked third in the country at 141 pounds, then picked up a 12-5 decision over Evan Botwin. With the win, Carter wrapped up his career with an undefeated mark in his home gym. Brent Waterman took the mat for the Hokies at 149 pounds in the place of the resting Sal Mastriani, but fell to Marcus Cain, 6-1. Fifth-ranked Nick Brascetta rolled to a 5-3 win at 157 pounds after controlling the pace throughout the match. In the most dramatic match of the night, Chad Strube picked up a 5-4 decision over Brian Dorsey. Strube was initially credited with a takedown in the closing seconds of the match, but after a Duke challenge, the call was reversed in favor of a Dorsey takedown, tying the match at 4-4. Then, with 13 seconds left after the Dorsey takedown, Strube escaped just before the buzzer to get the win to give Tech a 14-6 lead in the team score. Seventh-ranked Zach Epperly took care of business in dominant fashion against Randy Roden by way of a 17-2 (5:30) technical fall. At 184 pounds, Austin Gabel got out to an early 5-3 lead on Jasob Kasper before losing by injury default. He was taken down and re-injured his knee, having to take the deault. Duke’s best wrestler, No. 7 Conner Hartmann, earned a 7-4 win over Jared Haught at 197 pounds, but Haught fought until the end, picking up a take-down in the closing seconds. Eighth-ranked Ty Walz picked up the 5-2 decision in the final bout of the night after two big takedowns in the second and third periods to seal the win for Tech. The Hokies earned the dual meet victory, 22-15, clinching the ACC Dual Meet Title with one match to go. The title is the 19th ACC crown for Virginia Tech since joining the conference in 2004, the third for wrestling, but the first dual meet title as the other two were tournament titles. "We had some really bad energy tonight and I'm really embarrassed at the overall effort," said head coach Kevin Dresser. "I'm not happy." Virginia Tech has now won 32 of its last 35 ACC dual matches dating back to Feb. 16. 2008. Pittsburgh, in its first year in the league, won the inaugural ACC dual meet title last season, although the Hokies have won the past two tournament titles. Prior to the match, Tech’s three seniors, David Wesley, Chris Moon and Carter, were honored for their careers with the Hokies. Tech will wrap up its regular season next weekend, taking on North Carolina on Friday night in Chapel Hill and Hofstra Sunday afternoon in Hempstead, New York. 3. RALEIGH, N.C. -- Jumping out to a 15-0 lead after the first three bouts, the 25th-ranked NC State wrestling team didn't let up and pulled off a 27-12 upset of #14 Pittsburgh in ACC action Saturday night in Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack (15-5, 2-2 ACC) scored three pins during the dual, and defeated its seconds top-20 foe in just over a week after the Pack won 21-15 at #17 Old Dominion last weekend. "It was a very impressive win for us," said head coach Pat Popolizio. "We competed all night and it is a well deserved win over the #14 team in the nation. You probably have to go back quite a ways back the last time NC State upset a team ranked that high. Momentum is huge in any sport and for us to go up 15-0 after three bouts set the tone and gave us a great dual win." The dual started at 125 pounds, and NC State took each of the first three bouts - two bonus point wins. #26 Joe DeAngelo struck first for the Pack with a 4-2 defeat of #27 Dom Forys. DeAngelo improves to 3-1 in ACC action this season with two major decisions. The Pack then hit back-to-back pins by a pair of freshmen and jumped out to a 15-0 lead only three matches in. #30 Bryce Meredith pinned #32 Nick Zanette in 4:10 then classmate Kevin Jack pinned Ben Ross in 5:31. It was Jack's first dual of the season. Pitt scored decisions at both 149 and 157 pounds. At the halfway point, NC State was up 15-6. #22 Max Rohskopf came out after the intermission and scored a 3-2 at 165 pounds to push the Pack's lead to 18-6. Pitt cut into the lead with a pair of decisions at 174 and 184 pounds with their two top-10 ranked wrestlers, as the Pack held an 18-12 lead going into the final two bouts. Freshman Michael Boykin clinched the ACC win for NC State as he upset #19 Nick Bonaccorsi 6-1 at 197 pounds. For good measure, #1 Nick Gwiazdowski won his 46th straight match and pinned his fifth straight opponent, this time in just 1:56. Up Next: The Pack closes out its ACC dual season with a trip to #13 Virginia on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. NC State will host its final home dual of the year on Sunday, Feb. 22 vs. #7 Oklahoma State. 5. BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- No. 11 Lehigh overcame a sluggish start to win six of the final seven bouts as the Mountain Hawks rallied to defeat George Mason 27-9 Saturday in the regional round of the NWCA National Duals Saturday night inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks won seven of ten bouts overall, highlighted by junior Nathaniel Brown's first period pin over Daniel Mika at 184, which gave Lehigh the lead for good, heading into intermission. With the victory, Lehigh improves to 13-4 on the dual season. The Mountain Hawks are the first of eight teams to punch their ticket to next weekend's National Duals championship finals in Iowa City, Iowa. The win as also the 99th for Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro as the Mountain Hawks' mentor. "We definitely were flat and George Mason came ready to wrestle," Santoro said. "They were more excited than we were out there and that's a little bothersome right now. We don't have much time left in the season. We have to show up and wrestle hard for seven minutes. We weren't creating opportunities. The dual began at 149 with freshman Drew Longo staking Lehigh to a 3-0 lead with a 6-4 decision over Blake Roulo. Longo conceded the first takedown but led 3-2 after two periods behind two escapes and a penalty point for stalling. With the match tied 3-3 early in the third, Longo scored a takedown on the edge and proceeded to put on a strong ride to earn riding time advantage. The next two bouts did not go Lehigh's way as George Mason's Greg Flournoy rode a first period takedown to a 4-3 upset win over sophomore Mitch Minotti at 157. Patrick Davis then gave the Patriots the lead, collecting three takedowns in an 8-6 win over senior Marshall Peppelman at 165. While Peppelman was unable to secure a win on senior night, fellow fifth-year wrestler Santiago Martinez pulled the Mountain Hawks level at 6-6 with an 8-3 decision over Ryan Forrest at 174. Martinez used an arm-throw and then a bear hug for two first period takedowns and added a third takedown in the third period plus an escape and more than two minutes of riding time. Brown then gave Lehigh the lead back with his third pin of the season. After an early takedown, Brown threw both legs in on his ride and used a power half to deck Mika in just 1:49 to give the Mountain Hawks a 12-6 lead at intermission. In the first match after the break, sophomore Elliot Riddick was impressive in a 23-6 technical fall win over Derek Dwyer at 197. Riddick collected six takedowns across the three periods and nearly pinned Dwyer in the second, settling for a three point near fall. After reversing to open the third, Riddick closed the match with two takedowns and another near fall to end the match at the 6:52 mark. "It was good for Elliot to go out and score some points," Santoro said. "That was a big win for him last weekend and he has some good momentum right now." George Mason's final win came at heavyweight as Jake Kettler defeated sophomore Doug Vollaro 3-2 in the second round of sudden victory over Vollaro picked up his second stall warning. Freshman Scott Parker returned to the Lehigh lineup at 125 and posted an 8-1 win over Ibrahim Bunduka. Parker scored an early takedown and amassed more than two minutes of riding time in the first period. Leading 2-1 after two, Parker picked up an escape plus a takedown and two point near fall, plus 3:42 of riding time to narrowly miss the major decision. Junior Mason Beckman picked up Lehigh's third bonus point win of the night with a 13-0 major decision over Vince Rodriguez at 133. Beckman scored a takedown in each period and added an early two point near fall plus three penalty points for Rodriguez stalling and 3:23 of riding time advantage. The final bout of the dual went into overtime. Sophomore Randy Cruz gave up a third period takedown to Sahid Kargbo at 141 but finished regulation tied 2-2 behind a pair of escapes. After a scoreless sudden victory period, Cruz locked up a cradle and turned Kargbo for three near fall points in the first half of the tiebreaker before escaping in the second half to win 6-2. "Coming in we knew bonus points were going to be big," Santoro said. "There were a lot of tight matchups. We thought 133 would be a big matchup as would 157 and 165. We dropped two of those three. "There were some guys that did some nice things tonight," Santoro continued. "We have a big weekend next weekend and we have to be a lot sharper." Lehigh held an 18-6 edge in takedowns and limited George Mason to just one takedown in the final seven bouts. George Mason falls to 9-10 with the setback. Lehigh will wrestle a to-be-determined opponent in the quarterfinals Saturday at 1 p.m. ET at Iowa's Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The semifinals are set for Saturday at 4 p.m. ET while the finals and third place match set for Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The Mountain Hawks' quarterfinal opponent will be determined early in the week as the other seven regional matchups will take place on Sunday. 6. Laramie, Wyo. -- In a battle of two Top 25 ranked teams on Wyoming’s Senior Night, the No. 19 ranked Wyoming Cowboys fought back from a 14-3 deficit halfway through their match versus No. 17 ranked Oregon State to capture a thrilling 21-17 dual victory. First-period pins by Wyoming’s Andy McCulley at 174 pounds and Tyler Harms at 285 pounds fueled the Cowboy comeback. The win improved Wyoming’s dual record to 9-4 this season. It was the first dual loss of the year for Oregon State. The Beavers are now 11-1 on the year. “It was an exciting way to end a dual, and if you were here and you aren’t a wrestling fan now something is wrong with you,” said Wyoming head coach Mark Branch after the win. “Things were not going well early, I knew we could get ourselves back in it, but you don’t foresee getting two pins. It can be a crazy sport.” Wyoming senior Tyler Cox, ranked No. 15 in the nation at 125 pounds, began Senior Night for the Cowboys with a convincing 9-3 win over No. 10 ranked Ronnie Bresser of Oregon State to give UW a 3-0 lead, but the Beavers won the next four matches at 133, 141, 149 and 157 pounds to take a 14-3 lead at intermission. “It was an important win for Tyler (Cox),” Branch said. “He gave us a big spark to open the match. “But things didn’t go well for us after that. I was really disappointed in a couple of my guys. I felt they got out-wrestled and out-hustled. As excited as I am for our seniors and for us to get a good team win, I felt that after Tyler (Cox) gave us that spark we gave it up in the next four matches. The first match after intermission saw Wyoming’s Dakota Friesth, ranked No. 18 in the country, become the second Cowboy senior to record a victory on the evening, capturing an 8-5 win over OSU’s Seth Thomas at 165 pounds to pull the Pokes to within eight points at 14-6. Wyoming’s McCulley the continued the streak of Cowboy seniors to win, and he did it in dramatic fashion. Only 35 seconds into his match, McCulley recorded a fall over Oregon State’s Joe Latham at 174 pounds to narrow the Oregon State lead to only two points at 14-12. McCulley, who entered the match ranked 14th in the country, recorded his 99th victory as a Cowboy with his first-period pin. “I think of my senior night and all the emotions I had and when Andy (McCulley) came out like a caged animal it scared me,” said Branch. “But man what an animal he was tonight and gave us a great lift.” The 184-pound weight class was a matchup of two nationally-ranked wrestlers. Oregon State’s No. 7 ranked Taylor Meeks and Wyoming’s No. 19 ranked Benjamin Stroh faced off, with Meeks winning an 8-2 decision to build OSU’s lead to five points at 17-12. With only two weight classes remaining, the third matchup of ranked wrestlers was featured at 197 pounds. Wyoming’s No. 14 ranked Shane Woods and Oregon State’s No. 20 ranked Cody Crawford wrestled in a critical match. Woods recorded the only takedown of the match 26 seconds into the first period, but Crawford came back with an escape to end the first period with Woods up 2-1. Only 11 seconds into the second period, Woods recorded an escape of his own and the second period ended with Woods leading 3-1. The third period saw Crawford record a quick escape five seconds into the final period to narrow the lead to 3-2, but there would be no more scoring in the match as Woods notched his team best 27th win of the season and put the Pokes back within striking distance in the team score at 15-17. It then came down to Cowboy junior Tanner Harms to complete the Wyoming comeback in the final match of the evening in the 285-pound weight class. Harms was up for the challenge with a takedown 16 seconds into the first period. He then quickly put OSU’s Nate Keeve on his back and pinned Keeve 1:05 into the match, vaulting the Cowboys to a 21-17 victory. “I have seen Tanner (Harms) be that animal and when the opening whistle blew I knew Tanner was good,” Branch said. “I’m glad he could get the pin so we could wrap it up.” On a night when seven Cowboy seniors were honored prior to their final home match in the UniWyo Sports Complex, the four seniors who wrestled all recorded individual victories on way to the team win. “We got Tyler (Cox), Andy (McCulley), Shane (Woods) and Dakota (Friesth) and then you have the other seniors like Robert (Stroh), Brandon (Richardson) and Leland (Pfeifer). I can’t put into words how special these guys are, and they have helped change this program,” said Branch. Wyoming returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 15 when they will host Boise State at 2 p.m. at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs, Wyo. Sunday’s match will take place at Western Wyoming’s Rushmore Gymnasium. “I’m excited to head to Rock Springs,” added Branch. “It is a wrestling rich part of our state, and I’m always excited to introduce our team to fans who can’t get down to Laramie to see us. “It will be an exciting dual with a great crowd and hopefully the fans will walk away saying they love wrestling. “This will be a home dual. We are proud of Wyoming and proud of our fans, and we are going to go over there and do our best to showcase our program.” Results: 125: No. 15 Tyler Cox (Wyoming) Dec. #10 Ronnie Bresser (Oregon State), 9-3 – WYO 3-0 133:Jack Hathaway (Oregon State) Dec. 7. IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa wrestling team improved to 9-0 in the conference and captured the Big Ten regular season championship with a 22-9 win against 16th-ranked Michigan on Friday night. The win gave Iowa the outright dual championship for the seventh time since the conference started recognizing a dual champion in 1999. The Hawkeyes have won or shared the title in seven of the last eight years, but like in years past, it’s a trophy that is here today, gone tomorrow. "It's not what our ultimate goal is,” said junior Nathan Burak, "but like coach says, it's just another feather in our hat and that was what was ahead of us so we got it.” The Hawkeyes won seven-of-10 bouts and owned a 13-3 advantage in takedowns, but had more than a handful of slow starts, including six scoreless first periods, and split six matches against ranked opponents. "I don't think we wrestled to score points, I think we wrestled to hand fight and I think we wrestled to stay in there,” said UI head coach Tom Brands. "I think we wrestled to survive and I don't know if your best chance to win is to try to survive. Your best chance to win is to go out and score points and to put the energy into that simple task. We need to do a better job of that." Iowa won the first four matches and took a 13-3 lead into intermission. Fifth-ranked Thomas Gilman scored takedowns in the first and second periods and added 1:03 riding time to defeat 20th-ranked Conor Youtsey, 6-1, at 125. Sixth-ranked Cory Clark scored four first-period takedowns, added a reversal and three nearfall in the second period, and totaled 4:28 of riding time to earn a 14-3 major decision at 133. Sixth-ranked Josh Dziewa shutout George Fisher, 6-0, at 141, and second-ranked Brandon Sorensen extended his winning streak to 11 matches with a 2-1 win at 149. Sorensen and 13th-ranked Alec Pantaleo traded escapes in the second and third period, but Sorensen prevailed with 1:27 riding time. It marked his 11th straight win, a streak that includes six ranked opponents, but Sorensen found little reason to celebrate. "I didn't like the way I performed at all,” Sorensen said. "I was flat footed, I wasn't hitting multiple holds at a time, more single holds and it could have been a lot better. I could have gotten to my attacks and it could have been better." Michigan dented the scoreboard when 10th-ranked Brian Murphy defeated 13th-ranked Michael Kelly at 157. The Hawkeyes then pulled away with consecutive wins at 165 and 174. Ninth-ranked Nick Moore scored late takedowns in the second and third periods to win 6-1, and third-ranked Mike Evans scored three takedowns in the final 2:16 to win 8-3 at 174, extending the Hawkeyes’ lead to 19-3. Michigan closed the dual with two wins in the final three matches -- all bouts featuring ranked opponents. Eighth-ranked Sammy Brooks allowed a takedown with 21 seconds on the clock to drop a 3-2 decision to 12th-ranked Dominic Abounader at 184. The teams then split a pair of overtime matches at 197 and 285. Sixth-ranked Nathan Burak turned a double-leg into four points in the first sudden victory period to defeat eighth-ranked Max Huntley, 4-0, at 197. Seventh-ranked Adam Coon closed the dual with a reversal in the first tiebreak to defeat second-ranked Bobby Telford, 3-2, at 285. Iowa finished the dual season 14-0 and 9-0 in the Big Ten. The postseason begins Sunday against Virginia in the opening round of the EAS/NWCA National Duals. "We have a lot of work to do,” said Tom Brands. "It was not an inspiring performance for whatever reason. The stats that I looked at, I don't look at stats much, but the stats I looked at were not pretty.” Iowa hosts Virginia on Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT) on Mediacom Mat at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for youth 18 and younger. UI students and children five years old and younger are admitted free. NOTES: Attendance was 8,319… Iowa (14-0, 9-0) won the regular season title outright for the seventh time since the Big Ten started recognizing a dual champion in 1999… Iowa has won or shared seven of the last eight Big Ten dual championships… Tom Brands won for the 160th time as Iowa’s head coach (160-15-1), tying Dave McCuskey for No. 2 in program history… the Hawkeyes recognized seven seniors following the dual, including Josh Dziewa, Mike Evans, Jeremy Fahler, Matt Gurule, Michael Kelly, Nick Moore, and Bobby Telford. 8. Don't expect the greatest fight card ever this Saturday with the UFC's latest fight night installment. The main card features a middleweight fight that would seem more at home on a Bellator undercard, while a flyweight scrap between contenders Tim Elliot and Zach Makovsky is relegated to the prelims. The main event could be interesting, but Brandon Thatch, while and exciting prospect, has been out of action since 2013, and his opponent, Ben Henderson, is moving up to welterweight and doing so on short notice. Nevertheless, enjoy the breakdown. But at least no one on this card has tested positive for any performance enhancing drugs ... yet. Do you want to listen to a past episode? Access archives.
  9. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Michigan State wrestling team picked up a Big Ten dual win Friday with a 26-16 victory over Indiana on the Hoosiers' Senior Night at University Gym. The Spartans won the first three matches of the dual and the final three to earn the win. 10. KENT, Ohio – Seniors Tyler Small and Caleb Marsh gave themselves one final fond memory of the M.A.C. Center Friday night in Kent State's 27-6 victory over Northern Illinois. Eight Golden Flashes had their hand raised, including Small and Marsh on their Senior Night. In the third match of the night (141) Small gave the Flashes their first lead with a 12-0 blanking of Tyler Argue. Leading 2-0 after one period, a reversal that quickly turned into a cradle nearly flattened Argue and gave Small a commanding 7-0 lead. The major decision was the second of seven straight Kent State victories. "Tyler did a good job in some different situations," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "Hopefully he's starting to turn the corner and can continue going in the right direction." The bonus points kept on coming as Mike DePalma and Ian Miller each recorded major decisions at 149 and 157. DePalma used his 2-on-1 flip and tilt twice in the first period on the way to a 9-0 shutout of Austin Culton. Miller totaled five takedowns in a 15-4 victory over Andrew Morse. After his second takedown of the first period, Miller locked up a cradle and powered over the head of Morse for another three points. Junior Tyler Buckwalter scrambled his way to a clutch third period takedown and sealed up a riding time point in an 8-5 win over Shaun'Qae McMurtry. A two-point turn in the first helped Buckwalter jump out to a 5-0 lead. Marsh unleashed a pair of three-point turns in the first period on his way to a 10-4 victory over Trace Engelkes. "It's a really nice feeling to have both seniors come out and win their last match in the M.A.C. Center," Andrassy said. "Hopefully they have same feeling." The seventh straight win came from Jerald Spohn (184), who trailed 7-5 after two periods, but came away with a 9-7 decision. In wild, unorthodox fashion, Spohn continued to turn dangerous positions into points in the third. Starting from the top position, Spohn nearly gave up a reversal, before his constant movement suddenly created a cradle for three near fall points and riding time. The Golden Flashes streak began with a convincing 7-1 win for Mack McGuire over Jordan Northrup (133). McGuire finished off takedowns in the first and third periods and scored a reversal in the second. Sophomore Mimmo Lytle's aggressive approach earned him a 4-2 victory over Arthur Bunce. Lytle continued to push Bunce backward for a third-period stalling point that broke a 1-1 tie. 16. STILLWATER -- The Oklahoma State wrestling squad began its final home weekend with a dominating win over Clarion Friday, shutting out the Eagles 46-0. It was the Cowboys’ most lopsided win since last season’s 48-0 win over Northern Colorado. OSU (9-3; 3-0 Big 12) did not allow an offensive point in the dual, scoring 42 takedowns on the night in addition to its multiple nearfalls. "It's what we hoped for,” coach John Smith said. “We haven't had a to really score bonus points. We got exposed a little bit on how to pin people. We've been struggling for wins in tough dual meets and we get in the mode of takedowns and hard rides. We missed a few things tonight, but the takedowns and aggressiveness helped separate the score. That's what you like to see. We need to focus on building each period and getting a little bit better and tougher. I felt like we did that for the most part." The Cowboys earned nine bonus-point wins on the night, starting with ninth-ranked Eddie Klimara who defeated his opponent, Hunter Jones, with a 16-1 technical fall at 125 pounds. Klimara ended his bout early in the second period with only three takedowns. The Cowboy turned Jones for four sets of nearfall points. "We had to come out here and get going, especially with a big dual coming this weekend,” Klimara said. “The season is coming to an end pretty soon, so we need to step up and start pushing ourselves." True freshman Gary Wayne Harding kept the bonus points rolling with a dominant major decision at 133 pounds. The Cowboy was just short of a technical fall, surrendering only four points and racking up six takedowns en route to the 18-4 win. In the 141-pound bout, No. 15 Dean Heil put together a flurry of points with a reversal to start the third period, followed by two sets of back points to shut out John Pezze, 15-0. The redshirt freshman is now on a four-match win streak. "I think today’s win shows how much of a difference a week of improvement can be,” Heil said. “No college program is a bad program. Anybody can get beat on any given day. Going out and having almost every match get bonus points like that is a big deal. I think we can take from that and try to look at how we prepared this week for the dual and incorporate that into duals in the future." At 149 pounds, senior Josh Kindig was close the sticking Brodie Zacherl but ended the match early with a 22-5 tech fall in the third period. The Cowboy is now 13-1 in his senior campaign. In a match that started off slow, No. 18 Anthony Collica picked up the pace in the final period of the 157-pound match, scoring five takedowns. He went on to win the match 14-5. Top-ranked 165 pounder Alex Dieringer got the first pin of the night, sticking Slade Horner in the second period. Prior to the fall, Dieringer led the match 11-3. The national champion now has eight falls on the season as well as eight consecutive wins with bonus points to add to his perfect 23-0 record. Picking up another win at 174 pounds was sophomore Kyle Crutchmer, who bested Michael Pavasko, 9-5. Crutchmer sealed the win with a double-leg takedown in the final seconds of the match. Nolan Boyd, ranked 18th at 184 pounds, earned the fourth and final technical fall of the night, handling Daniel Sutherland, 17-2. Boyd led the first period, 7-0, and scored 10 more points in the second period to earn the win at the 5:52 mark. At 197 pounds, sophomore Luke Bean earned a 13-6 decision over Ryan Darch, giving him his first dual win as a Cowboy. Marsden capped the night with quickest finish of the dual, pinning Josh Davis in only 1:30 at 285 pounds. The Cowboys will finish their home dual season as they host four-time defending national champions Penn State on Sunday at 2 p.m. "It's big,” Smith said. “I think if the weather cooperates with us, it ought to be attended well, but a win would be much better. It would help, definitely. It's a tough match. The match-ups are tough, and it looks very competitive. When you get in these types of matches, you've got to do your job. If we do our job well, then we have an opportunity to win. That's what we're about. We're about winning big dual meets, and we've failed to do that this year. This is a big dual for us and it's important that we learn how to win them." 23. PELLA -- After roaring out to a 27-0 lead in the first five matches, the Central College wrestling team settled in for a 36-12 road win over Simpson Thursday. Central was out to a 12-0 lead before any matches even took place, courtesy of two Storm forfeits. Jahleel Vester (freshman, Oak Harbor, Wash.) found himself down two points at 141 pounds before turning Simpson’s Devan Berrian and earning a fall at 3:37. Mike O’Connor (sophomore, Lockport, Ill., St. Rita HS) was in an even more precarious position at 157 pounds. Down 7-0 at the start of the third period, O’Connor made the choice to start on top. Sixteen seconds later his decision paid off by pinning Jake Mize, earning his team-leading 11th fall of the season. “Both of those are younger guys who exemplify the heart and determination of our team,” coach Eric Van Kley said. “One was down by two and the other was done by seven and they both believed that the match wasn’t over. They kept battling and not only got wins, but got pins. That really set the tempo for the night and got a lot of momentum behind us.” Simpson earned victories at 165 and 175 pounds to close the gap to 27-9 before Tyler Lowy (senior, Phoenix, Ariz.) and Matt Seabold (sophomore, Burlington) slammed the door shut on the Storm. Lowy fought for a technical fall and Seabold used a late flurry to take a major decision. The nine-point swing ended any thoughts of a Simpson comeback. “It was good to see them open it and score a ton of points. It was a great way for Lowy to wrap up his dual career with a tech fall on the road. Seabold did a nice job of breaking the match open at 197. It was a 4-2 match at the start of third period before he finished it out with a major decision. Those are the bonus points that we’re looking for.” Central’s victory over the storm is the seventh-straight in the rivalry for the Dutch. The match also marked the end of the Iowa Conference dual season. Pending the results of tomorrow night’s dual between Loras and Wartburg, Central will likely finish in a three-way tie with Loras and Dubuque for fourth place. A fourth-place finish would be the highest finish for the Dutch since a third-place finish in 1995. A contingent of Dutch wrestlers will wrestle at the Jim Fox Invitational in Dubuque on Saturday in the final action of the regular season. The Dutch will then be off from competition for two weeks in advance of the NCAA Division III Central Regional in Dubuque on February 27 and 28.
