This is exciting news! I’m not really a DT fan, but it’s exciting for the landscape of college wrestling. Im hoping to see some competition and good rivalries in college wrestling again. I also think it will set the precedent too for other programs to take a chance on guys like JB, Dake, and Snyder. That would sure make things interesting.

In a different era Gilman would be the biggest star in America with his credentials. He’s gotten coaching perspectives from two of the top programs with starkly different philosophies. I think that makes him well-rounded, and it’s easy to see he’s matured a lot. He would be an excellent pick up.

If I remember right, it wasn’t NCAA that’s suspended him, was it? Either way, I would guess that UWW can’t ban them from NCAA competition, NCAA or their school could choose to enforce consequences

IF this turns out to be true about Brooks and he is ineligible, the right thing to do would be to hold a wrestle off between Hidlay and Taylor. Zahid would probably be better but he didn’t take third and he has no excuse for that. IMO it’s wrong to just give Taylor the spot because he didn’t beat anyone at the trials. But that’s probably what would happen.

This is a good question and I was wondering the same thing. It would make more sense to me if Carter went a more natural weight of 184 and was at his best than having him be a majorly undersized 197. I get the logic for freestyle and it worked for Brooks, but he was only going up one weight. Carter can wrestle 184 and be big enough for 86kg this year and then he could really bulk the following year… it’s likely a two-three year process for him to be a full sized 86 anyway. Only way 197 make sense this year is if it really helps the team.

I don’t think Mark Cody is a great example because he had a very successful coaching stint at American. But I get your point. Taylor could absolutely be a big bust as a coach. I think it’s pretty unlikely though and worth the risk. Winners win. The top 3 coaches I’ve seen in my lifetime are Cael, Gable, and Smith. The one thing they have in common is that they were all the biggest star wrestler of their time, and they all became head coaches early on.

I think OSU should hire Aaron Brooks instead In all seriousness, it’s worth the risk for a program to take a shot on one of our big name guys (DT, JB, Dake, Snyder). The only chance of overtaking Penn state is to lure in recruits with that type of star power. Obviously, they have to develop them too but that’s a chance you have to take. Sucks for Coleman, but I don’t think they could promise him anything. He knew he was taking a risk too and he was simply putting himself in the best position to potentially take over for Smith. If he loses out to someone like Taylor there’s no shame in that and some other program will be happy to have him.

I would think it’s just evidence that he can’t beat Mesenbrink or Haines (probably not Facundo either). I am glad he is transferring he deserves to be a starter and could be an AA.

I do remember that one. Impressive for sure and such a shame that concussions cut his career short. I am thinking it hasn’t happened in freestyle since Cejudo, and if you limit it to minors (under 18), I think Blaze may be the first to make the national team since Carr in 1972!

I think Marsteller for sure goes 79, not sure if Ringer can make it or not… he looked pretty big to me but I have no inside info there. I’m curious if Burroughs will make a run at 79 this fall? I thought he’d retire at trials, but I guess it makes sense that he worked so hard for this long that he may as well go for one more world title in few months. But he will likely have to go through Nolf and Marsteller to make the team, so I’m not sure if it’s worth it?

The incentive to throw is to score points. If someone is down by 4, I’m sure we will still see arm throws and other throws attempted as well. So forced par tarre really helps with that because it helps puts points on the board. You could actually argue that the slip rule decreases the amount of throws you see because when someone gets in a bad position, they can use that as a free way out. Take it away, and they fight through that bad position more and may end up getting tossed. Either way, I think the vast majority of slip throws are not legitimate attempts so I’d like to see it go away

Well, it was pretty anticlimactic. I was (wishfully) thinking he may announce there’s some progress to more weights, but he really just talked about why it is the way it is. It is not about medal count, so eliminating the double bronze would not help. It is all about overall number in the sport… I believe he said it’s like 480 wrestlers across all 3 styles. Overall Olympics is capped at 10,500 but they keep going over. With all the new sports they add, they are not going to add numbers to us. He did assure us that there are like 5 sports on the chopping block for 2028 but not wrestling and we are pretty safe as a core sport. As far as solutions… he said we could add weights if we reduced the number of wrestlers in the bracket at each weight. However, that’s not going to pass because no countries would ever vote for that except a few of the top dogs because they want to get their guys qualified. So essentially no viable solutions were given
