You grossly exaggerated how bad Zalesky was compared to Brands. Spin it however way you want, but on paper theyre pretty similar. Still I will concede with the edge going to Brands mostly due to longevity, a dual recruiting class with number 1 transfer Brent Metcalf (if Kirkvliet is considered a transfer then so is Metcalf), and landing Spencer Lee, a wrestler who would have been great no matter where he went. Spencer made Iowa better not the other way around. Spencer may credit his success to Iowa, but i call it cognitive dissonance. I didnt forget the 2021 title. I absolutely included it, however Tom Ryan also has a team title in 2015 and has more 2nd place finishes than Iowa. You want to claim a title for 2020? Fine, but that season PSU was ranked number 1 ahead of Iowa until Cassar got injured at US Nationals. Had he not been injured, PSU would have been the front runner and Seth Nevils would not have been in the line up. If you remember, the dual that season came down to heavyweight. Cassar does not lose to freshman Tony Cassiopi (the most successful version I might add.) Finally when the heck did the discussion turn to including if Gable had stayed? If Gable had stayed and his health allowed I believe the program would be in better shape! Penn States 6th place finish was a deliberate Punt season so its justified. Iowa has never deliberately punted. Using that as an example its purely disingenuous and you know it. Dresser's programs continues to improve. His wrestlers continue to improve. Its sad you refuse to give Dresser his due credit. I 100% whole heartedly believe Iowa would be better in Dresser's hands. l also whole heartedly believe ISU would not be where it is today if Brands was running the show there. Bottomline is under Brands the program will not have its return to glory days. Hes only getting older and his style is outdated. Iowa wrestlers are not dynamic, and they peak way too early in the season and their careers and end up battered and beaten. Spencer Lee's healthy was poorly mismanaged. Real Woods was expected to be head and shoulders ahead of the field yet declined. He "didnt look like himself." Seems to be an undeniable pattern over there. Kaleb Young goes from an NCAA semifinalist and AA while handling Ryan Deakin multiple times to not AAing as a senior as Deakin improves and wins an NCAA title. I wont mention Marinelli or Kemmerer. Too many examples to give here to support my stance of Brands NOT being the 2nd best coach in NCAA wrestling. Dint get me wrong, hes a great coach for sure, but not 2nd best. Finally, yes they lost starters due to the gambling scandle (which i agree is BS), but much of that loss was mitigated by 2 AA transfers so your whole "they lost 70% of their starters" comment is also disingenuous. If anything they were better off with Franek and Caliendo at 157 and 165, 2 guys they probably wouldnt have gone for had the scandle not happened. Abe Assad doesnt AA and is comparable to Kennedy at 174 (edge to Kennedy imo.) Nelson Brands, maybe AA. Cassiopi a lower AA (6th at best) but also probably loses to Yonger Bastida.

This is false due to the fact that Iowa has only placed 2nd behind PSU twice since 2011. tOSU, Okie State, Cornell, Minnesota all would have had titles during those years if PSU never came about. You cannot declare Iowa the perennial number 2 team, when they have not regularly been number 2.
-
You exaggerate grossly. Yes Brands had 4 championships, but 2 of them were before Cael came to Penn State and their run began. Furthermore yes Iowa has been top 5 for the past 17 years, however they always were in the top 5 so to act like thats the measuring stick for success is very disingenuous. Yes its easier to improve a poorly performing team, HOWEVER a team like Iowa should NEVER fall below those teams. NEVER, not even once so yes the fact that Dresser was able to out place Iowa with 2 different programs speaks volumes. With VaTech he rebuilt a gutted program and with ISU he did it with a team that lost a team point. You obviously are satisfied with Iowa and Brands performance in being a top 5 team, but go check out the Hawkeyereport. Many Iowa fans are not and have a much higher expectation than you. Since Penn States run began in 2011. Iowa has placed 2nd TWICE, yet you crown them as the 2nd best program.
-
Zalesky had 1 year where they placed 6th, youre exaggerating numbers. Zalesky, like Brands was consistently in the top 5. Ive stated facts. Dresser has done more with VATech and ISU than Brands has done with Iowa. If Brands was at ISU, they would not be close to what they are today. And yes I am giving a world of credit to Dresser for the 1 year because again he revived a DEAD and GUTTED program to bring it past Iowa only to have Brands do everything possible to not wrestle them. These are facts you refuse to recognize. Please take a look at where each program was when Brands and Dresser took over their respective teams and see where they are now. Dresser has improved his teams. Brands has come full circle and worse with his.

There needs to be a time limit for reviews
BIGTENFANBOY replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Theres needs to be irrefutable evidence to overturn a call. If it takes them more than 1 min of looking at the video replay the evidence is obviously not irrefutable. Refs are making these calls live and in realtime. The review team should not have virtually unlimited time to make these reviews. Call on the mat should stand. -
Is he really the second most success? Since the PSU run started in 2011 hes won 1 title, and finished 2nd twice. Its arguable that Tom Ryan has had just as much success as hes had more 2nd place finishes during the same time. I dont really understand how people say Iowa has consistently been the 2nd best team behind PSU, when theyve only finished 2nd twice behind PSU since 2011..

I am and 100% being consistent. PSU has more to work with NOW, because Cael built it up. He earned it and "you get what you earn" Brands has less than Cael because he has not built Iowa up. "Younget what you earn" He had a 3 peat run with his dual recruiting class after completely gutting VATech, then the fell back to exactly where they were under Zalesky. He had a brief run where he road the coattails of Spencer Lee and quite hinestly completely mismanaged his health. Lee would have been a 3x champ anywhere, and i mean that literally. Dresser resurrected 2 dead programs. Both VA Tech and ISU were better under Dresser than when he took over. They didnt waver and dip down to where they were when he started. Cannot say the same for Brands with Iowa. I never said Brands was better. In fact I'm saying Brands is not better. After Dresser rebuilt VAtech, Brands refused to wrestle them and politick his way out of wrestling thenpm at National duals because he knew Iowa would lose. So youre right, Dresser never beat Brands in a dual.
-
Dresser has had much less to work with than Brands. Hes revitalized 2 "dead" programs. Even at Iowa's worst, they have always been amongst the top programs. I would say flip the 2 scenarios, Iowa would be in a much better position than it is today. Dresser has never had a season that was worse than when he started. Brands has had 2.

So dont use PSUs funding as the reason why theyre great. The funding is great because theyre doing great.
-
Its good to know youre so knowledgeable about who who and what makes a good coach. You must be like the greatest athletic director in the universe. ,aybe Iowa should put you in charge of finding replacing Tom Brands. Youre right youre not my buddy, you are an arrogant pretentious punk.
-
Personally I love it. I think DC is hilarious and entetaining. He certainly does say some goofy stuff. I also think Rock Harrison talks a bit too much. Its great that he explains the rules and such but he uses way too many words and over explains when doing so.
-
I think theres some rule where youre not eligible to win it again after a certain number of years...
-
I always felt he should have been down at 125.
-
Someone certainly is salty. Cael is the best raw coach. Bottom line. Get over it buddy.
-
Yes i know, but he was writing off Dressers success at ISU, so i was pointing out he did it previously as well elsewhere.
-
Yes but the entire state of PA is not funding the PSU program. The general public doesnt know or care about wrestling, even in PA. Spencer Lee has gone on recordsaying , being a wrestler in Iowa makes you a semi celebrity. Furthermore again, Iowa has a longer deeper traditon of success when it comes to collegiate wrestling. One would think that with decades of wrestling success, they would have no problems with getting an overabundance of funding. Arent there any people who graduate from Iowa that go on to become filthy rich?
-
Definitely agree he was best as a freshman.
-
He did finish ahead of Iowa several years ago while at VATech.
-
And why do you think hes the best funded? Its a symptom of his success, not the cause. Really if it was all about funding, with Iowa's deep and rich history why cant decades of Iowa alumn generate the same level of if not a greater level of funding? I mean wrestling at PSU only started in the summer of 2009 right?

Forgot Vincenzo Joseph Stanford/ASU

I agree. His wife has a business there, DT has a thriving club, owns a farm and various businesses and is raising a family. Cael moving to PSU feels different. Did he and his wife have other obligations tying him to the area that he had to give up to take the PSU job? That being said, if DT were to take over at IOWA, I would probably become an Iowa fan overnight at he is my all time favorite wrestler, similar to how I like PSU. Im a Cael fan and if he ever left PSU, I would follow him wherever he went.
-
Funny, i found him saying what he actually thinks great! Nice to hear actual thoughts even if i disagree with certain points he makes.

Hall and Pearsall at UPenn, Ruth and Illinois. Mollinaro at Rutgers/ASU.

Is he really though? Since 2011 when PSU's run of team titles started his teams have finished 2011 3rd 2012 3rd 2013 4th 2014 4th 2015 2nd 2016 5th 2017 4th 2018 3rd 2019 4th 2020 Cancelled but presumably 1st 2021 1st 2022 3rd 2023 2nd 2024 5th So using imperfect science of removing PSU would have garnered them 2 more team titles than they currently have, mean while Cornell would have 2 titles, okie state, Minnesota, TOSU would all have a few team titles sprinkled in there.. its kind of tough to say hes consistently the 2nd best when theres only 2 2nd place finishes since 2011... and even if he is, i don't think hes that far ahead to say hes been definitively the 2nd best...

Hes definitely qwerky. Kind of like a 90s cartoon character
