Gable to Iowa questions!!
wrestlingest2010 replied to Alces Alces Gigas's topic in College Wrestling
Fix's suspension was super convenient. It was a flat year that started in the COVID year (where he was already redshirting) Effectively he couldn't compete that time but still was able to compete at Big 12s, NCAAs and Olympic trials. Just good luck. -

Assad's scenario is a moot point since I doubt he plans to redshirt 2 years and come back as a 7th year for Iowa. I'd be shocked if he isn't Iowa's 184 this year. 184 is pretty open this year, no reason he can't do a Max Murin and break through. Though I think Murin obviously showed way more before his senior year. Assad is in most matches as is. I heard ideas of moving Nelson to 184, which is dumb unless Caliendo can't make 165 and is better than him. A lot of what makes Nelson dangerous goes away at 184 since he's moved around a lot easier. Simply put, he doesn't have the frame to get that big. I think Iowa hopes for Ferrari at 197 (I think super long shot to get him eligible by January and that he still makes 197) but otherwise, they roll the dice with a Glazier or Franklin. I think they'll really miss and want to take some things said about Jacob Warner back if that's the case lol. -

Correct - that year just didn't happen for eligibility purposes. No redshirts needed. That's why I think you saw a lot of true freshman wrestled. Why Cael sent Bartlett at 149 and there was still discussion to redshirt him the following year. -

Don't know the exact list but Assad being an age medalist (Bronze at U17) qualifies him. -

Assad's scenario is: 2020 wrestled as true freshman 2021 didn't count and didn't need to use a redshirt as it was free 2022 wrestled 2023 wrestled As a result he has an ORS and regular RS. -

Question: Let's say Iowa wrestler A gambled and got a 30% season suspension, if he's a junior currently and olympic redshirted, would he lose his junior year? -
Shayne Van Ness Keeps the streak alive for Blair
wrestlingest2010 replied to flyingcement's topic in College Wrestling
Superb tournament he had. He was wrestling to the potential most PSU fans predicted early. Initially, it felt like he just got a really good draw (Paniro was a familiar opponent and Rooks was a gift quarters) but his matches against Parco and Henson I think sold everyone he was for real. Obviously he wrestled Yianni tough but I don't read much into that since Yianni is just a guy that plays with fire sometimes. Hopefully he continues the momentum. -

He has to portal but yes he can transfer whenever and whenever as he graduated from Minnesota. He doesn't even have to wrestle in the Fall. -
Iowa vs Penn State head to head next season
wrestlingest2010 replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Woods is the favorite next year, I think even if Bartlett jumps levels, Woods length (in addition to his massive skillset obviously) will always put Bartlett at a major disadvantage. I'm okay with saying Hardy should be above Bartlett to start but I think Hardy's style is something Bartlett can adjust to. The Bartlett that wrestled at US Open doesn't lose to Hardy though, I'd bet a ton on that. -
A Virginia Tech Football player snitched on himself and got 9 games (out of 12) instantly by the NCAA, which was reduced to 6 (through a neutral arbitrator, probably because it was such a small amount and he was honest but still half a season ultimately) This was for $400 total on NBA games through small bets. Iowa's best batter (Keaton Anthony) wasn't allowed to play the rest of the season before he is even technically found guilty of anything. This is a big deal.

Iowa vs Penn State head to head next season

Also - yes, I am okay taking a wait and see approach with Mesenbrink. His folk results senior year of HS weren't elite and his freshman year folk results at Cal Baptist were nonexistent basically. Go ahead and pencil him in as a non qualifier right now if you even want or Facundo's backup. Hell, maybe he'll be a career room guy who focuses on free (like Mason Manville) That being said, nonPSU fans hoping he's going to be average in folk might be setting themselves up for disappointment. -

People who are downplaying Beau Bartlett's free results are forgetting he wrestled free last summer also and didn't look anywhere near this good. He took Ls to D'Emilio, Lovett (getting blanked) at U23s. He did tech Kolodzik but that was a backside win, I am a believer in taking those with a grain of salt at the senior level. This summer, he beat Henderson, Parker (all legit senior guys on the winner side) and lost to Nick Lee controversially. I think Bartlett's issue is he will always struggle a bit against length but so many people downplayed his ability to AA even at 141 saying the weight drop alone isn't going to help him at all. -

I agree with your analysis (I think Ayala would tech fall him off takedowns since he isn't much of a turner I don't think) but there is no scenario Gary Steen is PSU's 125 next year IMO. Even if Howard isn't healthy, McHenry is significantly superior to him. I think Cael would borderline consider wrestling a freshman (Nasdeo, Davis) over Steen with how bad Steen looked last year. -
1. COVID was completely mishandled, 2021 should have counted after NCAA happened. 2. 2020 wrestlers who qualified for NCAAs should get the year back. Harsh but if you weren't the man entered at conferences and/or didn't qualify for NCAAs, your season was expunged anyways. 3. Greyshirting should not be a thing IMO. You can do it but your clock should start from graduating, not when your enroll. 4. It is WAY too easy to get an ORS and they're just used as an eligibility deferral. Candidly, the guys who are serious candidates for the Olympic team probably want the folk season if anything (Cox, Snyder, Gable, Spencer all wrestled) 5. Not a big fan of a 1 for 1 injury year. I think if you miss 2 years, sure, come back a 6th year.

Iowa vs Penn State head to head next season
wrestlingest2010 replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
The dual can be interesting especially if Iowa adds Gable. Even more if they have Ferrari (without him, Brooks would tech fall whoever they send at 197 with 3 point takedowns) Iowa would be favored at 125, 141, 285. 165 you have to say them but obviously a lot of that depends on how Mesenbrink looks (I think damn good) After that, they would just need one more upset to split 5-5 and Franek over Haines wouldn't be considered a huge one at all, especially in Carver. There are like so many moving parts: 1. Who's suspended for Iowa? 2. Can they feasibly add Ferrari on the roster? (I say no for next year) 3. Is Gable really going there? 4. Is Ayala healthy? He just got another shoudler surgery. 5. Does Cael go all in next year? If he senses Mesenbrink prefers 157 and is doing better than Levi, he can just redshirt Levi. -
Donors behind the Magnificent Seven?

I'm sure there is, it's no secret PSU has money. -
Donors behind the Magnificent Seven?
wrestlingest2010 replied to headshuck's topic in College Wrestling
Bob Nicolls is probably the most day to day (I think most "bags" offered by Iowa is his money) but I don't think he's even the biggest Iowa donor to the facilties (he's the 2nd) For PSU, it's allegedly Ira Lubert but if that's true, he's very behind the scenes. In the very least, he is not posting on the PSU forums (that we know of lol) -
A lot of parity. Meanwhile, both finalists from last year missed the podium the previous year. Very matchup dependent.

Iowa could have 7 transfer starters next year
wrestlingest2010 replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Honestly - academic eligibility should be the last of AJ's concern. The fact his family requested a trial shows the victim is all in on testifying against him and the prosecutor is not offering him any kind of favorable plea. Oklahoma Sex Crime laws are serious. I imagine the prosecutor isn't offering any kind of bargain that would keep him out of jail and not register as a sex offender (in which there is literally under a 0% chance Iowa would admit him) Obviously not the best source but if you want to believe Travis Mastro's snap, the victim immediately went to the hospital and got a DNA evidence and gave a statement to the police. AJ sister name dropping her and basically shaming her doesn't help their cause either (and probably motivates the victim to go forward with it all) If it does go to trial (big if here) I would be SHOCKED if it actually happens next fall, jury selection for someone of AJ's profile in that jurisdiction can take a while in itself. That date is probably just the earliest everyone was available. You need to find 12 people who show they know nothing about Oklahoma State sports and have absolutely 0 biases against athletes in any way (some people admittedly might think an athlete is immediately guilty because they have biases) There's a reason why Shawn Oakman's trial took years to actually start, and he was found not guilty in 45 minutes. (after his NFL career was long ruined) -
Caliendo is an upgrade over Patrick Kennedy?
wrestlingest2010 replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Yes - not a huge upgrade but you definitely have to call it one. AA'ed and has a better win than Kennedy (Shane Griffith) That being said, Kennedy is way more offensive and has more bonus potential. -

Next question then, can he make 197? He's 225 according to his Instagram. -
How long do Brands and Sanderson keep at it?
wrestlingest2010 replied to TwoPointsTakeDown84's topic in College Wrestling
My pure speculation is Cael doesn't coach to Brands age. He seems to be a very hands on coach. I think he'll hand the team off to DT after he gets to 16. But I would not be shocked if he takes a role with Team USA while remaining in State College (thus making State College a de facto training center also) -

Did not know about that, thanks. Also, I don't believe he finished classes his 2nd year at Oklahoma State after his car accident so that might further throw a wrench in things. This all assumes a favorable resolution to his trial obviously. The fact it's going to trial probably shows it's not ideal but there will be more pressure to prevent a jury trial. -

If there can be a resolution to AJ's situation (whether by charges getting dropped before trial, plea bargain to a non-felony, AJ acquitted completely), why can't he wrestle by January since it's tentatively scheduled for September? Obviously there is the issue of if it does go to trial that it will start on time (that's always an issue)
