At this point some of us are just wishing they could make it to a run, never mind the medium run. Everyone is too banged up (Spencer, Ayala, Siebrecht, Murin, Assad, Brands, Schriever, Kemerer, Clark, Marinelli, Eierman...)
Maybe? We don't know the full story yet, but what is known is that over 100 individuals across 5 sports have been implicated, 26 of which are current athletes, and an employee from the Iowa Athletics Department. The IBOR is involved and has recommended that the University bring in outside legal counsel to help manage an investigation into possible criminal conduct (related to sports betting) and NCAA violations, and avise the administration on navigating the process with the NCAA. The buck stops with Barta, so who knows if his job is safe.
It depends on how the punishment comes down. You assume it will be on the individuals, but since the infractions spanr multiple athletes and staff across multiple sports it's also likely that the NCAA punishes Iowa Athletics for a culture of noncompliance, which could lead to recruiting and postseason bans. If that looks to be the case, Barta will probably self-impose some sort of sanction on the offending sports before the NCAA makes a ruling. Not having a postseason could be really bad news and may affect recruiting, transfers, and NIL money.
What if... we had a training center... maybe even an Olympic training center for wrestling... an Olympic training center where high level resident athletes could train... together... and get coaching and instruction... from veteran World and Olympic level wrestlers...
Salary reporting can be tricky and is not always an apples to apples comparison, so grain of salt and all that.
• Sometimes the salary is fully loaded (benefits added), sometimes not
• Bonus structure is often not included but can be significant compared to base salary
• Performance based bonuses can fluctuate wildly from year to year
• Figures don't include outside money like camp income, paid sponsorships, and booster perks
Sure, just have those up and comers make the National Team. Selection criteria were created by a committee of folks from the USAW Olympic Committees, coaches, and current athletes. Those up and comers are also free to enter the Spanish Grand Prix, Deglane, Dan Kolov, Bill Farrell, Yarygin*, and other international tournaments through their RTC. Plenty of opportunities for younger guys to go out and compete.
What kind of odds do you give a Spencer Lee run at next year's Olympic team? I'd like to see it happen but think it'll too steep of a climb. Also I'm not sure he'll actually be 100% physically and mentally a year from now. 2028 might be more realistic with some World hardware along the way. I expect 57kg to clear out a bit over the next cycle (Gilman may retire or move up?) and Spencer will have some serious man strength over the younger Uxx guys coming up.
I believe it's because the NCAA has academic eligibility and residency requirements to transfer. NLIs bind the athlete with the school, not the coaches, so the institution would need to sign a release. See Metcalf and Va Tech. I know the rule was proposed for changes but I don't know where it landed.
A wrestler could simply not show up and go to the school or RTC he wants (or nowhere at all) as @Idaho suggests, but grayshirting wouldn't matter because his eligibility clock would have started anyway. So, a year lost.
Maroulis out. Burroughs cruising into tonight's finals. Macchiavelo wrestling for Gold. Hildebrandt, Molinari in the finals Parrish pulled into repechage, going for Bronze. Miracle going for Bronze.
I don't know about that. The NCAA puts out RFPs for all its divisions and sports championships, along with checklists and requirements for the facility, equipment, broadcast, promotions, lodging, accessibility, etc. NCAA pays for transportation, lodging, and/or per diems for teams and tournament officials & staff so location is a consideration but I'd be surprised if they target or only invite specific cities to submit a bid.
I think she'd make a good action movie star but it sounds like she wants to go out and "compete" without having to worry about cutting weight. Either way, she has a lot of options available.
