The Croatia (Zagreb) Open Ranking Series Tournament
PNWfan replied to ILLINIWrestlingBlog's topic in International Wrestling
Another loss for Snyder. This really makes me doubt how he can stack up against Tazhudinov and some of the best at 97kg. I'd think he has a good shot to medal in Paris, but gold is going to be tough. -

This is what Steveson did in the Olympic finals to get gold against Petriashvili. Knew he couldn't turn him, motioned to ref to go back up to feet which ref granted and the rest is history. -
The Croatia (Zagreb) Open Ranking Series Tournament

What if Gable makes a run for another gold in this summer? I'd assume at that point there is a more than decent chance he would face Zare or Masoumi, depending on who Iran's Olympic rep is. -

Masoumi hasn't seen Steveson's power and quickness. Steveson would need to be careful of those underhooks which gave Parris issues in today's match but I think Steveson beats Masoumi and/or Zare. -
AJ Sr. is where all these problems start. Enables the behavior from his kids and moves the family around every time there is a problem. The Lavar Ball comp is spot-on. As long as he is making the choices for those kids, nothing good will come from it.

Any sense if we will see Gable at the Olympic Trials in April to make another run at gold?

JB is heavy favorite in a 2016 Yazdani match. Yazdani’s comeback win against Geduev was blood filled and pretty miraculous.

Paris 2024 Olympic Freestyle Team

I would expect Gable to make a run at it too. Everything he has said up to this point indicates he wants that 2nd Olympic gold. Only thing I could see getting in the way would be WWE saying absolutely not (which is a possibility). -
A world champion at every weight in 2024?

Add O'Toole at 74kg. -
Totally agree. DT already said he was considering retirement after he won Olympic gold in 2021. I think what had him come back was knowing he still had some great years left as a competitor and that there were "only" 3 years until the next Olympics instead of 4. DT is also an entrepreneur and has a couple daughters that I am sure he would like to spend more time around. He mentioned previously that if he coached, PSU would be the preference, so maybe him and Cael could work something out once Cael is ready to ride off into the sunset.

Semis running one match at a time?

Month subscription works, though they make it tricky and appear as if the annual plan is the only one. Click the small "Change Plan" button and you can subscribe for a month for $29.99.

You could say this about a ton of different guys in freestyle. If ________ gets on top, watch out because they have a rib breaking gut wrench or an ankle breaking leg lace.

Sounds like you missed Parris performance at the Ranking Series tournament in July. Everything he did there indicated he is ready to take on the best in the world. Don't let a couple losses to Steveson at Final X make you think he can't hang with Petriashvili, Akgul, or Zare.
-
Parris wrestled at the ranking series tournament recently and took 1st place. USA Wrestling and Parris himself have been preparing for this possibility for well over a month. Preparation will not be an issue.
-
Gable officially out of World's. Disappointing but not surprising. Parris had an excellent showing at the recent rankings tournament and I think is a legit medal contender. He will likely get a crack at least one of the big three (Akgul, Zare, Petriashvili).
-
Agree, and I think he still plans to compete in the 2024 Olympics. Olympic gold is the highest peak in international wrestling, he realizes that and wants a shot at becoming a rare 2x Olympic champ from the USA. As cool as it would be for Gable to be a world champ, that doesn't hold the same marketing appeal within WWE as an Olympic gold. Also, if he were to lose at World's, that might take a little shine off his gold that he earned in 2021. That said, I think if he surprises us and laces the boots up for Serbia, he wins gold.
-
Are we sure Steveson is officially out? I had seen rumblings that WWE wouldn't let him go, but nothing beyond that.

Cornell. USA can't seem to quite the Iranian code at 65kg. Yianni came up short a couple times at the Sr. level, Mendez comes up just short today.

Carroll didn't look too impressive out there when we stepped on the mat with Masoumi. Needs some time in the weight room. To me, it seems like he is a fringe AA right now who could probably use a redshirt year to help his body develop.
-
You are probably right. Last year Feldman was completely outclassed against Masoumi. That said, if Carroll is truly the #1 P4P in the 2023 recruiting class, he should be able to hang tough. That said, Masoumi is a top 10 guy in the world right now and would be in that Iranian lineup if it were not for Zare.
-
Anyone else looking forward to Christian Carroll against Masoumi? Personally, I cannot wait for that match. Will be a great test for Carroll against a very tough Iranian who crushed Nick Feldman last year and also beat Zillmer at the World Cup.
-
Who is going to beat him? I share the question if Gable plans to still compete at WCs. I would assume yes given he already wrestled at US Open and Final X. If for whatever reason he passes, Mason Parris would make for a nice fill in who can likely compete with the top tier of international HWTs.

Gable to announce he's joining the Hawkeyes tonight
PNWfan replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Well, isn’t he technically doing both right now? And why would WWE be hyping up this announcement if he is going to say he plans to wrestle at Iowa and then take another shot at gold in 2024? -

I’m actually a little nervous he is going to announce he will be foregoing real wrestling altogether and will be going full WWE.
