Ness hammered Miller in the dual

Van Ness down 8-0 after the 1st

Fair enough. But if you root for Iowa, Penn State, Ohio State, etc., there is at least some accountability- if a top-20 wrestler simply disappears from the lineup, sooner or later the coach/program will need to acknowledge it in some way or another, if for no other reason than the sheer volume of questions. With the smaller programs, no such pressure exists. At least that's always been my take on it; I've listened in on too many Flo podcasts that spent huge amounts of time puzzling over various injury reports from the big programs, along with the affect they may have on the team situation.
-
I follow UMD pretty closely, and I have no idea. Smith disappeared from the lineup following the VA Duals, wrested vs Purdue on Friday, and was out again today. Terps also didn't wrestle the "other" Smith, North, or Best today. Sadly, unless you follow one of the big programs, we fans only get whatever info the coaches release- which in this case is nothing.
-
It was by fall, but late in the match- 3rd period, me thinks. Martin was up by 2 or 3 when he stuck Smith. But if your point was that they graduated the same year, then point taken.
-
-
You're right- I was thinking about 184.
-
Terps have a backup 197. He's a career .500 guy, but he's a far better option than a guaranteed 6. No idea why they didn't send him out.
-
No North or Smith, forfeit at 197. If the Terps intended to win this, giving away at least 6 isn't a good way to do it.

What's up with the little footballs?

Ohio State absolutely blasted the MD Terps, 38-6. Several ranked starters from both teams out of the lineup, including Heinselman, Ethan Smith, North, and Jaxon Smith. 149: No. 2 Sammy Sasso major dec. (12-1) No. 20 Ethen Miller (Ohio State 4, Maryland 0) Sasso dominated Miller from start to finish, and may have scored the fall if he had about 10 more seconds on the clock at the end of the match. 157: No. 19 Paddy Gallagher TF (22-5) Kevin Schork (Ohio State 9, Maryland 0) Gallagher looked like he was drilling against North's backup. 165: No. 8 Carson Kharchla dec. (7-2) John Martin Best (Ohio State 12, Maryland 0) Kharchla did not look sharp against a sub-.500 opponent, but he was never in any danger. 174: Issac Wilcox SV dec. (3-1) No. 33 Dominic Solis (Ohio State 15, Maryland 0) Low score, but lots of action. Solis took it to OT after a critical challenge and reversal, but it wasn't enough. 184: No. 4 Kaleb Romero TF (22-7) Chase Mielnik (Ohio State 20, Maryland 0) Romero toyed with Mielnik. 197: No. 18 Gavin Hoffman wins by forfeit (Ohio State 26, Maryland 0) No Jaxon Smith; not sure why MD didn't send out a backup. HWT: No. 14 Tate Orndorff dec. (3-1) No. 25 Jaron Smith (Ohio State 29, Maryland 0) Close match, but Orndorff had just enough to score a 3rd period TD. 125: No. 12 Braxton Brown fall (1:55) Brendan McCrone (Ohio State 29, Maryland 6) Brown was headed to a tech but scored a fall on his second cradle attempt. 133: No. 9 Jesse Mendez fall (2:30) Conner Quinn 2:30 (Ohio State 35, Maryland 6) Quinn has had a rough season. It didn't get any better tonight. 141: No. 15 Dylan D'Emilio dec. (6-3) No. 33 Kal Miller (Ohio State 38, Maryland 6) D'Emilio was never in any type of danger and was in control the entire match. The Terps have made progress, but the reality of the Big 10 came crashing in on them tonight. Upside: Standing room only in The Pavilion. Nice to see the support.

This. I doubt most fans realize just how bad a situation Clemson walked into. I would describe it as a train wreck, but that isn't fair to train wrecks- the program he took over was easily one of the worst in D1. Clemson inherited a lineup that contained maybe 3-4 legitimate D1 wrestlers; of the 30-odd wrestlers on the roster at the close of the 2019 season, 5 had winning records and 6 posted double digit wins- including redshirt seasons. Starter's records during McCoy's final year were as follows: 8-16, 6-21, 15-16, 14-9, 7-15, 11-19, 6-14, 9-19, 3-18, and 21-9. Of course, Hemida (21-9) and Bannister (14-9) both graduated, leaving not a single starter with a winning record. To take this utter sh!t show and turn it into a respectable, top-30 program in 3 seasons is little short of miraculous.

Wow... up 3-1 with literally 1 second on the clock, Ghadiali throws an elbow into the back of Smith's head. Ugly.
-
Unless Smith can pull a rabbit out of his hat, Campbell is going to beat the Terps...

Indiana vs Maryland on BTN+ at 6:30 PM EST
Natty Boh Army replied to flyingcement's topic in College Wrestling
Indeed he was, although he was fairly subdued. If one didn't know better, they would think he was a typical fan- albeit a moderately animated and loud one. Dude is up there in years; I don't know how old he is, but he was involved in Watergate (do the math). -
165- Park vs Cordio P1- Cordio shot attempt stalemated. Quick single by Park for 2. Cordio almost out but Park showing good control. Cordio flat and Park works for something- stall warning. P2- Cordio picks neutral. Cordio nice shot but Park shows nice funk for 2. Cordio flat and dinged for a stall point. Park riding high but Cordio unable to take advantage. 5-0 Park. P3- Park picks neutral. Cordio deep shot but can’t do anything with it. Another Cordio deep shot and he converts this one for the TD. Cordio cuts park. Yet another Cordio shot and Park funks to a TD. Cordio flattens for the final 5 seconds, and Park stands on top of him with both feet for potentially dangerous. Park wins 9-2 Maryland wins it 18-15.

157 Cerniglia vs North (The “Ultimate Battle”, according to the announcer) P1- Big scramble with both wrestlers on ankles, finally stalemated. Big double attempt by Cerniglia but North defends it. Noorth almost scores on a reattack but another scramble closes out the period. P2- North sits out and up for 1. North with a nasty front headlock abut can’t do anything with it. Announcer happily explains that riding time is not a factor. Fakes and tieups to end the 2nd. P3- Cerniglia down. North pushing hard for a turn. Not much on bottom from Cerniglia. North maintaining tight control with wrist control. North maintains control to lock up riding time to take it. North wins 2-0

149 Latone vs Miller P1- Latone quick and deep shot but Miller defends. Heavy hand fighting. Big double by Miller for 2. Miller rolls through tilt for 2 backs. 4-0 Miller. P2- Miller down. Miller almost out but Latone hanging on; he draws a stall call for pulling Miller out of bounds. Miller on his feet and out for 1. Single by Miller for 2. P3- Neutral to start the 3rd. Miller reattack for 2 more. Miller cuts Latone. Miller high single for 2 then cuts him again. Miller spins around a Latone shot attempt for another TD. Another cut with 40 secs left, Miller pushing for the tech. Another Miller single for 2. Latone flat and draws a stall point. Miller wins 17-4 MD up 15-12 with 2 matches left

141 Konderhandt vs Miller P1- Konderhandt deep shot; Miller tried to roll for an ankle but can’t get it, TD Konderhandt. Blood time. Miller out quick for 1. Nobody willing to commit to any shots to end the period. P2- Konderhandt down. Miller keeping control over 1 min in; not pushing for turns but keeping good pressure and burning time. Konderhandt catches an ankle and reverses Miller. 4-1 Konderhandt. P3- Miller down. Konderhandt working hard for breakdown, Miller not able to do much. Announcers have been talking about riding time for the last 2-3 minutes. Miller flat and gets banged for a stall call. Konderhandt pushing hard for a turn but unable to do so. Konderhandt wins 5-1

133 Hunt vs Cockrell P1- Deep shot by Hunt; Cockrell tried to defend but Hunt gets the 2. Big return by Hunt. More returns and good forward pressure from Hunt; Cockrell staying active on down but not able to get traction on anything. The announcer says Hunt is “trying to flip” Cockrell (?). P2- Cockrell choses neutral. Both guys exchanging fakes and shot attempts. Hunt lands a single to a big double for 2. Hunt smothering Cockrell to end the 2nd. P3- Hunt down. Announcers talking about riding time again. Good control by Cockrell, but not really working for anything. Hunt reverses for 2. Hint cuts Cockrell for 1, 6-1 Hunt. Cockrell trying to hold off the major and playing D. Cockrell lands a deep single and finally converts for the 2 with 2 secs left. Hunt wins 7-3

125 Treaster (?) vs Brown P1- Brown quick single for 2. Brown pushing hard for wrist control and applying good pressure, Treaster not able to do much. P2- From the comments of the announcers and the unmistakable voice, it appears that MDs infamous “Superfan”, Robin Ficker, is in the building. This is not necessarily a good ting for the Terps. Huge mat return for Brown; Treaster fighting off his belly while Brown stays behind- Brown hit with a stall warning. Brown over commits on a turn attempt and gives Treaster room for an escape. Brown lands another quick single for 2, then picks up 2 backs from a tilt. Brown riding like an anaconda, Treaster not able to do anything. Announcers back on the topic of riding time. P3- Brown scores a reversal 30 seconds into the period and immediately looking for a tilt. Treaster hit with a stall warning. Fairly sloppy tilt from Brown for 3 more backs. Brown gets even sloppier for another tilt attempt and almost gets reversed to his back as clock winds down. Brown wins 13-1

I had hoped to keep up with this in real time, but tough to do while watching a toddler. Notes on the first 4 matches: Match starts at 174. 174 Star vs Solis P1- Lots of shots from Solis but can’t get much traction on anything. Star defending well but not taking any shots of his own, hit for a stall call at the end of the first. P2- Solis out quick. Same as 1st period, shots from Solis- none are particularly good, but he is pushing the action. Commentator is utterly clueless. He keeps talking about how important the 11 seconds of riding time will be “if the match doesn’t end in a pin”. P3- Star granbys out in less than a second, score tied at 1-1. More defense from Star and he finally gets banged for a stall point. Star turns it up over the last 30 seconds and comes close to a TD, but Solis managedto keep his leg hooked for no call as the clock runs out. Solis wins 2-1 184 Key vs Mielnik P1- Key lands the first TD about a minute in. Announcer still fascinated with riding time. Key dominating from top, Mielnik fighting to avoid a turn. P2- Riding time still a huge topic of discussion; announcer openly puzzled by the fact that Key differed choice of position. Key working for turns and gets a 1 count on a tilt; Mielnik fighting them off, but eventually draws a stall call. 2-0 Key at the end of the 2nd with riding time locked up (much to the delight of the announcer). P3- Key on bottom, Meilnick with a nice mat return and almost locks a cradle. Meilnick cuts him with 10 secs left, but unable to get any shots off. Key wins 3-0 197 Koser vs Smith P1- Lots of tie ups and both guys pushing for shots, ankle picks, and sweeps. Smith finally lands an ankle pick to duck under for the TD + 2 backs. Good top pressure and big mat return from Smith. Koser out for 1. Smith gets another 2 on a shuck by. 6-1 Smith. P2- Smith kicks out for a quick 1. Very nice shot by Koser, but unable to finish. Good low single by Smith for 2. P3- Smith riding well with heavy pressure, Koser unable to get much moving until a nice roll for 1. Smith looking for picks and shucks, but Koser defending to end it. Smith wins 10-2. 285 Griess vs Smith P1- Smith moving well for a big man; hardly surprising for a guy who started at 174 and is now in his 8th (!) season with the Terps. Single by Smith for 2. Smith looking for tilts but not getting very close. Griess staying off his belly but not doing much else. Smith getting a tad careless and lets Griess go for 1. P2- Griess starts down and immediately hooks a leg and leverages around for the reversal; he almost gets backs. Smith belly down and Griess pushing for bars (a “hammerlock”, according to the announcer) and turns. Griess aggressive and far out to the side and Smith reverses for possible backs (MD challenge). Announcers discussing riding time during the challenge. No backs on the challenge, Smith in control with 5 secs left in the 2nd; Griess out for 1 with 2 seconds left in the period. 4-4 P3- 30 secs in Smith gets the 1. Smith stuffed on a double attempt and Griess almost locks a cradle; Smith gets himself out of back danger but gives up the 2. Smith tried to roll out with 10 secs left but unable to escape. Griess wins 6-5
