Coming out of the locker room, All-American David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio), ranked No. 1 at 165, posted a devastating 18-3 tech fall over Ohio State's Derek Garcia (6:20). Keeping the Lion train rolling, All-American Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.) ranked No. 2 at 174, pinned No. 8 Nick Heflin in the first period, getting the fall at the 2:05 mark.. Defending national champion Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.), ranked No. 2 at 184, then pinned Buckeye Craig Thomas at the 3:18 mark for Penn State's third straight bonus point win. Megaludis entered the bout ranked No. 8 while Dejulius was ranked No. 15. Megaludis gained control of Dejulius' right leg with a high single and steadily worked his way into a scoring position, getting the takedown for a 2-0 lead at the 1:20 mark. The true freshman then maintained control for :51 before the Buckeye escaped to a 2-1 Lion lead. Dejulius chose down to start the second period and Megaludis gained control of the Buckeyes arm, working to turn the Buckeye over for back points with an arm bar. A dangerous hold call stopped action with Megaludis still in control with over 2:00 riding time. Dejulius escaped to a 2-2 tie, but Megaludis continued to pressure the Buckeye, forcing him into defense for the rest of the period. Tied 2-2 but with 2:11 in time to his advantage, Megaludis chose down to start the third and quickly escaped to 3-2 lead. A quick low single led to another Megaludis takedown with :40 left, giving the Lion a 5-2 lead with a clinched riding time point. Megaludis then maintained control for the remainder of the match and rolled to a 6-2 win with 2:41 in riding time. 133: Nittany Lion sophomore Frank Martellotti (Pittsburgh, Pa.) took on Ohio State's Logan Stieber, who was ranked No. 3 at 133. Stieber got in on a quickly single leg and drove through for an early takedown and a 2-0 lead. He then worked his way into a pin, getting the fall over Martellotti at the 1:38 mark. 141: Penn State junior Bryan Pearsall (Lititz, Pa.) battled Buckeye Hunter Stieber, who was ranked No. 6 at 141. Stieber scored first, using a high single to take Pearsall down for an early 2-0 lead. Stieber put together a strong ride, trying to turn Pearsall for back points before cutting him loose at the 1:38 mark with 1:04 in riding time. Another quick high single led to a second Stieber takedown and a 4-1 lead for the sixth-ranked Buckeye. Stieber then rode Pearsall out and led 4-1 with 2:11 in riding time after one period. Stieber chose down to start the second period but could not break free of a strong Pearsall ride as the Lion junior maintained control for over a minute. But the sixth-ranked sophomore worked his way into a reversal at the :50 mark to take a 6-1 lead. But Pearsall answered the reversal to cut the lead to 6-3 as the period ended. The Lion junior took down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 6-4 deficit, but Stieber had 1:59 in riding time. Stieber took a low single and worked his way into a takedown and an 8-4 lead with a clinched riding time point at the :45 mark. Pearsall escaped to an 8-5 deficit and continued to pressure the Buckeye, looking for his takedown. Stieber held off a late Pearsall shot and posted the 9-5 decision. 149: Top-ranked Nittany Lion Frank Molinaro (Barnegat, N.J.) faced off against Alex Gordon at 149. The Lion senior pressured Gordon from the offset, forcing the Buckeye back on his heels. Molinaro connected on a head inside single to take a 2-0 lead with 1:558 left. He then turned Gordon to his back for three near fall points and a 5-0 lead. Molinaro reset himself after action moved out of bounds and maintained control of the Buckeye for the rest of the period to lead 5-0 with 2:03 in time after one. Molinaro chose down to start the second stanza and quickly escaped to a 6-0 lead. Another takedown with 1:20 left gave the Lion an 8-0 lead and another turn for two near fall points put him up 10-0. Down by ten, Gordon chose down to start the third period (Molinaro had a riding time point clinched). Molinaro spent the entire period trying to turn Gordon for more back points, picking up a stall point in the process. Molinaro posted a 12-0 win with 5:20 in riding time. 157: Red-shirt freshman Dylan Alton (Mill Hall, Pa.), ranked No. 7 at 157, met Ohio State's Josh Demas, who was ranked No. 20. Alton dove through a high double at the 1:37 mark to take a 2-0 lead, getting the takedown in front of the Buckeye bench. He then maintained control of Demas for over a minute, looking for a chance to turn his foe and forcing him into a first stall warning with :25 on the clock. Alton rode Demas out to lead by two with 1:41 in riding time after one period. Alton chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 3-0 lead. The Lion continued to pressure Demas, forcing the Buckeye backwards for the rest of the period. Demas, down 3-0 and giving up 1:38 in time, chose neutral to start and Alton quickly got in on a single. Demas once again worked his way towards the outside circle and forced a reset with 1:30 on the clock. Demas took a shot at the 1:00 mark of the third period but Alton nearly turned it into a throw. With the riding time point clinched, Alton rolled on to a 4-0 win to give Penn State a 10-9 lead at the break. 165: Top-ranked Penn Stater David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio) met OSU freshman Derek Garcia at 165. Taylor used a blazing fast low single to notch the first takedown at the 2:00 mark. Garcia got hit with a first stall warning quickly as the Buckeyes continued to belly out underneath. Taylor cut Garcia loose at the :30 mark and then worked his way for a second takedown even as Garcia worked to move out of bounds. Up 4-1 with :18 left, Taylor maintained control of the Buckeye for the ride out. Garcia chose down to start the second period and Taylor cut him loose. Garcia got in on a high single, but Taylor easily countered for his own takedown and a 6-2 lead with 1:25 on the clock. Taylor picked up a stall point before turning Garcia to his back. But the Buckeye was able to roll out of trouble without any near falls. Taylor cut Garcia loose, took him down against with :30 on the clock. A third stall gave Taylor a 10-3 lead and two near fall points put him up 12-3 after two periods. Taylor chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 13-3 lead. The Lion sophomore countered another Garcia shot, took him down for a 15-3 lead, and then turned him for three near fall points and the 18-3 technical fall at the 6:20 mark. 174: Second-ranked Nittany Lion Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.) took on Ohio State's Nick Heflin, who was ranked No. 8 at 174. Ruth shot quick out of the gates, turning a high double into a scramble on the edge of the mat. But Heflin was able to keep from giving up the takedown and the match remained scoreless. Ruth countered a Heflin shot and then nearly completed a cradle on the takedown. Heflin fought to his belly and the Lion led 2-0. Ruth reset himself, worked his way into a position for a cradle and locked it up. The Lion All-American finished off the eighth-ranked Buckeye at the 2:05 mark with the pin. 184: Second-ranked Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.) battled Buckeye Craig Thomas at 184. Wright quickly took the Buckeye down, taking a 2-0 lead just :30 into the bout. The All-American then began working for a chance to turn Thomas, steadily breaking the Buckeye down while building up a solid riding time edge. Wright got two near fall points before Thomas rolled over and out of trouble, giving the Nittany Lion a 4-1 lead at the 1:10 mark. Another high Wright double leg led to a 6-1 lead less than :20 after that and the Nittany Lion once again set to breaking Thomas down. He picked up a riding tim point and then added on two more near fall points to lead 9-1 with :11 on the clock. Wright chose down to start the second, quickly escaped and then caught Thomas in a shoulder throw, tossing the Buckeye to the mat and getting the pin at the 3:18 mark, just :18 into the second period. 197: True freshman Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calif.), ranked No. 12 at 197, met Ohio State's Andrew Campolattano, who was ranked No. 20. McIntosh gained control of Campolattano's left ankle and steadily worked his way to a 2-0 lead with a takedown at the 1:47 mark. The Buckeye quickly escaped and action moved to the center circle with McIntosh up by a point. Another low ankle pick by McIntosh led to a second takedown and a 4-2 lead after a quick Campolattano escaped. Campolattano chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 4-3 McIntosh lead. McIntosh continued to shoot low, working for a takedown, but an injury forced McIntosh to call for time out, allowing the Buckeye to choose down and escape to a 4-4 tie. With the score deadlocked heading into the third, McIntosh chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 5-4 lead. The ranked duo battled evenly for the bulk of the period, with the Nittany Lion freshman fighting off a late shot to hold on for a thrilling 5-4 win. 285: Nittany Lion senior Cameron Wade (Twinsburg, Ohio), ranked No. 6 at heavyweight, met Buckeye Peter Capone, who was ranked No. 16. Each wrestler took an early shot, with neither man breaking through to score early. The ranked duo battled through an even first period and action moved to the second scoreless. Capone chose down to start the second period and Wade quickly gained control of the Buckeye, working for back points. The Lion senior dominated action from the top, controlling Capone for the full two minutes. Tied 0-0 but with 2:00 riding time to his favor, Wade chose down to start the final period. Wade deftly reversed the 16th-ranked Buckeye for a 2-0 lead and then he once again went to work, turning the Buckeye for three near fall points and a 5-0 lead. After a reset, Wade picked up three more back points and posted a dominating 9-0 major with 3:00 in riding time.

KENT, Ohio -- Kent State (10-4, 3-0 MAC) put itself in the driver's seat for a Mid-American Conference regular season title Sunday with a 22-13 victory over Central Michigan (12-5, 4-1) inside the M.A.C. Center. The Golden Flashes took 7-of-10 matches against a Chippewa program that had won 70 of their last 73 conference duals. It was just the second win for Jim Andrassy against CMU in his nine seasons as head coach and the Flashes' first home victory over the Chippewas since 1996. Although the Flashes won the first four weight classes, drama had built heading into the 197-pound match. With his team leading 16-13, junior Keith Witt (Oak Harbor, Ohio) barely beat the final buzzer and finished off a takedown to claim a 3-1 win over Chad Friend. "I never want to take it down to last second," Witt said. "But that's kind of the way it's happened for me since I bumped up to 197. That's my best shot so I was pretty confident in it." Senior Brendan Barlow (Westerville, Ohio) then needed two sudden victory periods and two tiebreaker go-arounds to earn a five-second riding time advantage over Peter Sturgeon and a 4-3 victory in the day's final match. "I thought Brendan was the more aggressive wrestler today and he deserved to win." Andrassy said. The first pivotal match came at 133, when junior Stevie Mitcheff (Lorain, Ohio) overcame a third period deficit and topped Tyler Keselring 10-9. "Stevie's really come a long way and he's starting to build confidence," Andrassy said. "We're going to continue to tell him how much better he's getting and he's going to continue to work hard and work out with Nic Bedelyon, which has been helping." Freshman Ian Miller (Oak Harbor, Ohio) scored the only bonus points of the day for Kent State with a 13-5 major decision over Joey Kielbasa at 149. A more aggressive Miller collected five takedowns, an escape, riding time and a stalling point." "Central did a great job of slowing all of our guys down," Andrassy said. "They have a simple style of wrestling that's hard to beat. I thought we were the more aggressive team." After back-to-back CMU wins at 157 and 165, sophomore Brandonn Johnson (Middletown, Md.) claimed a 7-1 victory to give the Flashes a 16-7 lead. No. 5 Ben Bennett then made things interesting with a third period pin of Casey Newburg (Union, Ohio) to narrow his team's deficit to just three points. BLACKSBURG -- The 23rd-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling team defeated No. 25 Old Dominion, 22-12, on Senior Day in its final home dual match in front of 726 fans at Cassell Coliseum Sunday evening. Prior to the match, Tech honored seniors Nick Murray and David Marone for their contributions to the wrestling program. No. 19 Zach Neibert picked up his third overall and fastest pin of the season at 141 pounds as he earned the fall in 3:46 over Taylor Moeder to make the team score 10-0. A close bout followed at 149 pounds as Tech's Nick Brascetta was tied with Brennan Brumley 2-2 late in the third period. Brascetta was then awarded a penalty point because of stalling, but Brumley held the advantage in riding time and the bout was forced into a sudden victory. After a scoreless period, Brumley opened the scoring in the first 30-second tiebreaker period as he escaped from the bottom. However, Brascetta countered with a takedown and two back points later in the period and held on in the second tiebreaker period for the 7-4 victory. Old Dominion would get on the board as John Nicholson earned a 9-4 decision over Cameron Hurd at 157 pounds, but seventh-ranked Pete Yates answered for the Hokies at 165 pounds with a decision by a 9-2 count over Tristan Warner, which made the score 16-3 Tech. We now get a week or so off here and get ready for the National Duals and the past of the season.†With the win, Tech improves to 7-4 overall, while ODU falls to 11-8. The Hokies, ranked No. 23 in the NWCA/USA Today Coaches' Poll will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 12 when they travel to Ames, Iowa wrestle in the Midwest Regional of the NWCA National Duals. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team closed out the home portion of its 2011-12 schedule in dominant fashion, claiming seven matches en route to a 26-9 win over intrastate rival Michigan State on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 29) in front of 1,351 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines' three seniors were all victorious in their final appearance at Keen Arena, while U-M wrapped its home slate with a 4-1 record. MSU won two of the opening three bouts to keep the score close early, but the Wolverines surged ahead with three straight bonus wins after the intermission break. Fifth-year senior Justin Zeerip (Fremont, Mich./Hesperia HS) kicked off the dual meet with his second win over the Spartans' 11th-ranked Curran Jacobs this season, using takedowns in the first and third periods to secure a 7-1 decision at 174 pounds. Zeerip, ranked fifth, struck quickly on a snap-down and head in the hole and elicited a pair of stalling calls on bottom while riding out the remainder of the first period. He escaped in the second and tacked on a late takedown on another hard snap-down. Zeerip improved to 18-2 on the season. After the Spartans took their temporary and short-lived advantage with back-to-back wins at 184 and 197 pounds, Michigan won at the top and bottom of the lineup to carry a three-point lead into the intermission. Senior/junior heavyweight Ben Apland (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) used a pair of takedowns and 2:44 in riding-time advantage to cruise past No. 18-ranked Mike McClure. He rode out the period, escaped quickly in the second, and added an explosive double leg midway through the third. Junior/sophomore Grant Pizzo (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) reclaimed the Wolverines' advantage with a 7-4 decision over Eric Olanowski in a swing match at 125 pounds. Pizzo countered an early MSU shot to score on a first-period single leg and extended his advantage with another in the second. He rode a majority of the third period to seal the match and claim his third Big Ten win. Michigan picked up back-to-back major decisions out of the intermission from senior Zac Stevens (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS) and fifth-year senior Kellen Russell (High Bridge, N.J./Blair Academy) at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively. Top-ranked Russell extended his win streak to 15 straight matches with a 10-0 shutout against Brian Gibbs at 141 pounds. Russell scored the bulk of his points in the first period, finishing on a quick duck-under before using a pair of power halves to tack on six back points. He escaped early in the second and rode out the third to accumulate 4:16 in riding time and improve to 22-1 this season. Junior/sophomore Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) claimed Michigan's third straight bonus win with a quick first-period pin against Dan Osterman at 149 pounds. Grajales, ranked seventh, fought off an early and deep single-leg shot, scrambling for the takedown and immediately locking up a cradle to stick the Spartan wrestler at the 1:50 mark. It was Grajales' second pin and 10th bonus win of the season, and he improved to 14-3. The teams splits the final two matches as Michigan State's 12th-ranked Anthony Jones Jr. benefited from a stalling call in the tiebreaker to claim the 157-pound contest, 3-2, before junior/sophomore Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS) closed out the dual with a 6-0 decision David Cheza at 165 pounds. Yates scored on takedowns in the first and third periods and accumulated 1:19 in riding time to claim his second win of the weekend. LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Three bonus-point victories and seven total wins powered the University of Wyoming wrestling team to its fifth-straight dual win Sunday as the Cowboys took down conference rival Northern Iowa, 27-12. “I knew that we could be in a really tough battle, so to win seven matches and dominate the team score was good,†Wyoming coach Mark Branch said. “(Northern Iowa is) a good team. I don't think they get enough credit because they've wrestled a tough schedule. They've scrapped and wrestled some of the better teams in the nation, so I wasn't going to be deceived. I knew they were going to be a lot tougher team than they looked on paper.†The team score was tied at 9 after five matches, but four straight wins after that gave Wyoming (5-2 overall, 2-0 Western Wrestling Conference) an insurmountable lead heading into the last match. UW sophomore Pat Martinez paved the way for the win for the Pokes, and senior Joe LeBlanc sealed it. Martinez earned a pin of UNI's Onni Prestidge at the 4:44 mark at 174 pounds, and the first-ranked LeBlanc defeated sixth-ranked Ryan Loder in a 10-5 decision at 184 pounds. The nine team points gave Wyoming a 23-9 lead with just two matches to go, a margin UNI (5-4 overall, 3-1 WWC) couldn't close. “Pat came out with a whole different attitude. He looked like a beast,†Branch said. “He had that fire in his belly, and that was good to see. He got the fall for us, which was big, momentum-wise. “And Joe wrestled great… He did well on top, (wrestled with) a lot of effort and our younger kids can learn from that, with second, third and fourth efforts to ride him and bring him back down and it paid off. He controlled the pace of the match. (Loder) is a tough kid; he's given Joe some fits, but that was a big win to separate the (team) score a little bit.†Senior Michael Martinez put the Pokes on the scoreboard first with a gritty 6-2 decision over UNI's Cruse Aarhus at 125 pounds to give Wyoming a 3-0 lead. The Panthers, however, answered quickly to take a 5-3 lead in the team score. No. 12 Joe Colon beat Wyoming redshirt freshman Zach Zehner, ranked 17th, with a 22-4 technical fall at 133 pounds. Cowboy senior Chase Smith earned his first dual win of the year, beating UNI's Levi Wolfensperger in a tough 7-6 decision at 141 pounds. Smith's escape with just 34 seconds remaining gave him the victory and Wyoming took a 6-5 lead on the scoreboard. Wyoming redshirt junior McCade Ford stepped up to wrestle at 149 points, and earned a narrow 6-5 decision over Seth Noble for his first dual win of the season. But UNI tied up the team score at 9 when David Bonin defeated UW's Dakota Friesth at 157 pounds with a 13-3 major decision. Third-ranked Shane Onufer, a UW senior, gave Wyoming some breathing room with a dominant 15-0 technical fall over UNI's Riley Banach at 165 pounds to take the 14-9 lead heading into the 174-pound tilt. After LeBlanc's win, eighth-ranked Cowboy junior Alfonso Hernandez outworked Taylor Kettman in a 12-3 major decision to give Wyoming 27 team points. The nightcap featured two heavyweights, Wyoming's L.J. Helbig and Northern Iowa's Blayne Beale. Helbig battled, but Beale earned the 11-8 decision. The Pokes will hit the road for their next test, a WWC dual versus Air Force on Thursday in Colorado Springs, Colo. Matches begin at 7 p.m. Results: 125 pounds: Michael Martinez (UW) dec. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The 22nd-ranked Virginia wrestling team won at six weight classes in scoring a 22-14 upset victory over No. 13 Maryland Sunday afternoon in front of boisterous crowd at Memorial Gymnasium. In handing the Terrapins their first loss of the season, UVa earned a share of the ACC regular-season championship for the first time since 2006. Virginia (7-1, 4-1 ACC) took down their highest-ranked opponent in program history and, in doing so, defeated the Terrapins (13-1, 3-1) for the first time since Feb. 17, 2006, snapping a streak of five straight dual losses to Maryland. The Cavaliers have tied for the regular-season crown with Virginia Tech, while Maryland still has one match remaining. The Cavaliers got off to a strong start Sunday, winning the first five weight classes to jump out to a 16-0 advantage. UVa sealed the dual win at 184 pounds when Jon Fausey (R-So., Dalmatia, Pa.) reversed Ty Snook and put him on his back for the pin, sending the large Cavalier contingent into a frenzy. "Without question it's the biggest dual win in our program's history," Virginia head coach Steve Garland said. "Not only because this is the top-ranked team we have ever beaten, but the history behind it is even bigger. We had never beaten Maryland since I have been here as head coach. We've lost some crazy, close matches to them, so it's great to get that weight off our back. "We found a way to win today. It was the effort we saw from top to bottom - the best I've seen from any team here. I'm so happy and proud of our guys. I was amazed to see how in the zone they were. It was just a huge day for us." Virginia also scored bonus points at 149 pounds, where Gus Sako (So., Cleveland, Ohio) won by major decision, 10-2, over Ben Dorsay. The Cavaliers got a big upset at 157 pounds, as Jedd Moore (R-Jr., Mount Vernon, Ohio) knocked off No. 11 Kyle John, 5-3. The Cavaliers picked up three straight wins by decision to start the day. In a battle of ranked foes at 125 pounds, 10th-ranked Matt Snyder (R-Jr., Lewistown, Pa.) dominated in a 7-0 decision over No. 19 Shane Gentry of Maryland. Snyder (18-3) scored a takedown in the final minute of the first period, then built a 6-0 lead in the second after taking Gentry (13-4) down and later tilting him for the two-point near fall. Gentry was able to hold Snyder off in the third to avoid the major decision, although Snyder accumulated 2:35 in riding time to pick up another point. In another key match, Matt Nelson (R-Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) battled back after giving up a first-period takedown and defeated Geoffrey Alexander, 4-2, at 133. Alexander (19-9) built up 1:20 in riding time before Nelson (15-3) escaped late in the first. After choosing the down position in the second, Nelson reversed Alexander and maintained the advantage the rest of the period. Alexander chose down to start the third, but Nelson rode him the entire period and built up 2:19 in riding time to seal the win. Ninth-ranked Nick Nelson (R-Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up a solid 5-2 win over Frank Goodwin at 141 and improved to 19-2 before Sako (14-5) jumped out to a big early lead at 149, finishing the major decision with the riding time point after racking up 2:53 of riding time against Dorsay (13-9). Moore (16-5) claimed the big upset of the day when he outlasted John (18-9) at 157. Moore never trailed in the bout; he scored a first-period takedown and held a 2-1 lead entering the final period. John escaped to start the stanza, but Moore responded by taking John down with a minute left and then building 1:27 in riding time. John escaped with a few seconds remaining before Moore held him at bay to give UVa a 16-0 lead. The Terrapins won their first bout at 165, although it was a battle to the end as second-ranked Josh Asper remained undefeated and improved to 21-0 with a 4-3 decision over No. 14 Nick Sulzer (R-Fr., Cleveland, Ohio). Asper built up 1:12 of riding time in the first period after taking Sulzer (19-5) down, and maintained his advantage from the top position for 31 seconds in the second before Sulzer scored an escape point. Sulzer shot in just before the buzzer to take Asper down and grab a 3-2 lead. Asper was able to escape eight seconds into the third and held off Sulzer the rest of the period, clinching the riding time point to win, 4-3. The Terps made it two in a row when No. 15 Jimmy Shertock earned an 11-3 major decision over Vinny Waldhauser (Fr., El Dorado Hills, Calif.) at 174. Shertock clinched the major with the riding time point after accumulating 3:49 in advantage time. Fausey (17-3) picked up a takedown a minute into his bout with Snook, then rode him for the remainder of the period. After taking the down position to start the second, Fausey quickly reversed Snook, tilted him and got him on his back to seal the pin in 3:21. The win by fall gave UVa six points and a 22-7 lead while clinching the team win. Maryland finished strong by winning the final two classes. At 197 fifth-ranked Christian Boley (26-1) notched an 11-2 major decision over Ryan Malo (Sr., Georgetown, Mass.) before No. 8 Spencer Myers (18-5) earned a 6-1 decision over Derek Papagianopoulos (7-2) in the heavyweight class. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Jason Welch and Lee Munster made quick work of their Purdue opponents Sunday and scored key bonus points for Northwestern as the 'Cats hung on for a 21-18 victory over the Boilermakers. Welch and Munster both recorded first-period falls (Munster's came in 13 seconds, the fastest fall this season for any NU wrestler) while Pat Greco, Pierce Harger and Lee Munster also won their bouts Sunday. With the win, NU improves to 7-4 in dual action and 3-4 in the Big Ten. "Our guys will not celebrate this win," head coach Drew Pariano said. "We left a few victories out on the mat. Greco stepped up today and I'm proud of him. Welch and Munster were ready to go and it showed with both of them earning first-period falls." The first four matches were a back-and-forth affair as Northwestern took the 125 and 141 bouts, but Purdue came back to tie the team score at 133 and 149. No. 9 Levi Mele won his team-leading 22nd match of the season, shutting out Camden Eppert 6-0 at 125. Mele had two takedowns, an escape and 3:00 of riding time in the win. Purdue then evened the team score as Matt Fields defeated Jameson Oster 7-1 at 133, but Northwestern bounced back at 141. Pat Greco made the start Sunday and earned his first Big Ten dual victory, edging Nick Lawrence 5-4 at 141. Greco scored the first takedown of the match and had a 3-1 lead at the end of the second. In the third, Lawrence came within one point off an escape, but Greco scored another takedown for the 5-2 lead. Lawrence escaped one last time and was awarded a point for NU stalling, but Greco hung on for the 5-4 win. Once again, Purdue tied things up at 149 lbs. as No. 13 Ivan Lopouchanski came back to defeat Kaleb Friedley, 8-6. No. 2 Jason Welch then gave Northwestern a commanding six-point lead as he pinned Tommy Churchard in 1:12 and the 'Cats maintained their lead the rest of the match. With the win, Welch now is a perfect 17-0 on the season and has bonus points in 11 of his 17 matches. After the break, Pierce Harger scored the 8-3 decision over Kyle Moiser at 165 lbs. Harger jumped out to a 7-0 lead with a takedown, reversal and three nearfall points. He allowed Moiser to score a reversal and escape but had 2:54 of riding time in the victory. No. 13 Lee Munster got back on the winning track and gave Northwestern more key bonus points by pinning Drake Stein in just 13 seconds. Munster's pin was the fastest fall for any NU wrestler this season and extended the 'Cats lead to 21-6 heading into the final three bouts. Purdue would sweep the final three matches of the day, with a first-period fall of its own at 184 lbs., along with decisions at 197 and heavyweight, putting the final score at 21-18 in favor of Northwestern. Northwestern is back at Welsh-Ryan Arena Friday, Feb. 3, hosting nonconference foe Northern Illinois. DALTON, Ga. -- Liberty University took advantage of a forfeit late in its championship match and converted wins in the final three bouts into a national title as it topped Lindenwood-St. Charles, 25-15, to clinch the NCWA National Duals in its first year of eligibility. Liberty (Photo/Jason Heartsfield)The teams jockeyed through four lead changes in the first seven matches before Lindenwood's forfeit and six-point gift at 184 pounds gave Liberty the lead for good at 16-15. It also allowed Liberty to bump its 197-pounder, Nick Knowles, to 235 to take on Lindenwood's Spencer Daniels. Aaron Thompson of Liberty set up what would become the decisive match with a close 3-2 win at 197, then Knowles beat Daniels 7-2 to clinch the title for Liberty. Liberty's Andrew Wilson won the heavyweight match 4-2 for the final 25-15 count. Lindenwood-St. Charles, undefeated in its other matches, had to forfeit the 184 class throughout the two-day tournament due to injury. “We had scouted them and saw that they had been giving up that weight,†said Liberty coach Jesse Castro. “We felt it was our best bet tactically.†Liberty won seven of the 11 matches in the final, held at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center. Liberty, the top seed in the tournament, had been an NCAA Division I program before the school discontinued the scholarship program last year. The NCWA provided a home for the Flames' program and allowed them to keep their program alive and its wrestlers on campus. The Flames withstood a stiff challenge from Maryland-Baltimore County in the semifinals, taking a 25-21 win. “My hat's off to the UMBC team,†Castro said. “They made us compete with everything we were worth, and we did not anticipate that. It's a testament to this association, and the vision the NCWA has is real encouraging and inspiring.†It was the first NCWA competition of the season for Lindenwood-St. Charles, which was seeded No. 2. LSC is a former NAIA program competing within the NCWA during its transition seasons toward future NCAA Division II membership. Prior to the final the Lions stormed past the rest of the competition, with its closest match being a 29-point win over Grand Valley State (Mich.) in the semifinals. LSC's Blayne Shockley opened the championship match with a 16-0 technical fall over Liberty's Jeremy Beale. The Flames' Scott Clymer responded two bouts later with a 9-0 major decision over Jacob Janes that put Liberty back in front, 7-5. But LSC's Craig Chiles topped Peter Crawford, 3-0, to put the Lions back in the lead at 8-7 four matches in. There were no pins in the match. “I was impressed with the level of competition here,†said LSC coach Chad Smith. “We knew we were going to have to give up that weight due to injury, so it was up to the rest of them to pick up the scoring. I couldn't be prouder of how our guys wrestled here.†UMBC, seeded fifth, jumped ahead of Grand Valley State with a fall and a major decision in the first three matches, and beat the Lakers 31-10 in the third-place match. Kriss Dutt opened the match with a fall in 1:49 at 125 pounds, and Brian Samuels topped MattMorrill 8-0 at 141 for a 13-0 lead that wouldn't be challenged. Lindenwood-Belleville edged The Apprentice School 27-22 for fifth place. Lindenwood-Belleville is also in its first year of NCWA membership. The teams scored back-and-forth victories early on before Lindenwood-Belleville stretched its lead to 21-10 in the middle weights. But it took a 5-2 decision at heavyweight by Jacob Gregg to seal the win. In the inaugural high school division, Alabama's top-ranked team, Thompson, swept two duals from Bradley Central (Tenn.) and Grissom (Ala.). Thompson and Grissom are 1-2 in the most recent Alabama state poll. Grissom topped Bradley Central 42-21 in the other dual in the round-robin format. The multi-state high school division served as a springboard toward a vision of having an NCWA-sponsored high school national duals tournament in the future in which every state would send a duals champion to the event. Liberty and Lindenwood-St. Charles are among the favorites at the 2012 NCWA Championships, set for March 8-10 in Daytona Beach, Fla. Off the mat, the NCWA assisted the Dalton community with its 6:12 Project, in which the association's wrestlers perform service projects in the cities that host its championship events. NCWA wrestlers and staff served meals at Dalton's City of Refuge homeless shelter on Friday, and conducted a canned food drive on Saturday that brought in more than $1,000 worth of food for the shelter. “The community involvement of the NCWA was something new to us,†Smith said. “It's impressive, and they did a great job of drumming up community support for this event.†FINAL RESULTS (Jan. 28 at Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center) Championship Match results Liberty 25, Lindenwood-St. Charles 15 125 – Blayne Shockley, LSC, def. BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- The Navy wrestling team snapped a three-match skid on Saturday by scoring a pair of dual victories on the road against North Carolina and Campbell. The Mids earned a 25-12 win over North Carolina in Chapel Hill to open the day's action before routing Campbell in Buies Creek in the nightcap. Navy now stand 5-6 on the year which has featured a 4-2 mark on the road. “We competed hard in both matches today, but when you look back upon our performances we gave up too many points,†said Navy head coach Bruce Burnett. “Getting back out on the mat and getting a couple of wins certainly gives our guys some confidence, but we need to shore things up and wrestle to win. This next week is an important week as we prepare for the All-Academy Championship and there's no doubt Army and Air Force will be well prepared.†Four wrestlers closed out the day earning a pair of wins, including senior team captain Aaron Kalil (Salem, N.H.) at 133 pounds. Kalil opened the day by producing an impressive 7-1 victory over UNC senior Brock LiVorio. The two previously squared off at the Southern Scuffle at the beginning of the month and Kalil squeaked out a 2-1 victory. Saturday's match was completely different as Kalil wrestled one of his better matches of the season. Meanwhile, he narrowly defeated Campbell's Joey Rizzolino to cap off the night in a 4-3 decision. Kalil now stands 23-8 on the year and with his win over LiVorio became the 19th different wrestler in program history to join the 90-win club. He owns a 91-49 career record and is tied for 16th on Navy's all-time wins list. Meanwhile, Kalil is now 9-2 in dual matches this season. Junior Bobby Barnhisel (River Forest, Ill.) also walked away with a 2-0 mark, which included a huge victory at 157 pounds in the Mids' win over North Carolina. Navy trailed 12-10 heading into Barnhisel's match, finding itself down 6-0 straight out of the gate when Zac Bennett pinned Navy's Paul Rands (Cary, Ill.) at 197 pounds. Barnhisel not only gave the Mids the lead for good, he was able to pin the nation's 18th-ranked wrestler in the form of sophomore Corey Mock. For Barnhisel, it marked his second win over a ranked wrestler this season after dealing Oklahoma's Matt Lester, ranked 12th at the time, an 8-6 loss in early January. “Bobby gave us a huge lift with a big, big win over the Mock kid and it definitely got the guys fired up,†added Burnett. “Not only was it a big win in terms of turning the match in our direction, beating a ranked wrestler will pay off for him in the next RPI. On Friday night, Mock beat Kyle John from Maryland, 11-2, and John pinned Bobby a week ago. That tells you the quality of wrestler Mock is and how well Bobby performed.†Barnhisel completed his flawless night with an 11-9 victory over Campbell sophomore Nick Rex, 11-9. Senior 184-pound Luke Rebertus (Gloucester, Va.) captured a 2-0 win over UNC's Thomas Ferguson to start the day and capped it off with a 14-6 major decision over John Merickel of Campbell at night. Ranked 13th nationally, Rebertus has won six of his last seven bouts, including four straight. He stands 22-9 on the year and is just five wins away from 100 wins, a feat just 10 other wrestlers at Navy have accomplished. Meanwhile, he is eight wins shy of reaching the 30-win mark for the third time in his career. Finally, junior heavyweight Dan Miller (Berlin, Md.) looked back to form on Saturday, picking up a 9-0 major decision over UNC's Frank Abbondanza and following up with a 2-1 triumph over Joe Nolan. A triumph it was, as Miller gave up better than 30 pounds to Nolan who weighed in at 284.5 pounds. Miller has wins in five of his last six matches, including each of the last four. “Danny had a good weekend of wrestling,†said Burnett. “He stepped up and answered the call in the Carolina match after Paul was pinned. He got us a bonus point win and I couldn't ask much more out of him.†Three wrestlers - junior Mason Bailey (Fairmont, W.Va.), sophomore Joe Locksmith and freshman Peyton Walsh (Glen Allen, Va.) - turned in 1-0 marks. Bailey, who wrestled for just the second time since sitting out for nearly two months with a rib injury, turned in a solid 3-1 victory over the Tar Heels' Kyle Kiss but sat out in the evening bout. “I thought Mason wrestled a controlled match and I also let him know that it was good to see him wrestle to win,†said Burnett. “Last Sunday against (Scott) Winston, he was trying to control the match but was too conservative. He took a step in the right direction today.†Locksmith earned an opportunity to get back into the lineup and produced. The second-year standout from Kissimmee, Fla., dealt UNC's Jon Burns a 6-4 loss at 141 pounds. “I felt like Joe needed a chance to get back on the mat and wrestle. I also thought his styled matched up against Burns a little better than Peyton (Walsh). Speaking of Walsh, he took the mat in the nightcap where he picked up a 9-5 victory over Campbell's Mark Hartenstine. Finally, 125-pound Tyler Sackett (Omaha, Neb.), 149-pound Dustin Haislip (Inwood, W.Va.) and 174-pound Oscar Huntley (Stafford, Va.) pitched 1-1 marks for the Mids. The Midshipmen will use the next week to prepare for the 18th-Annual All-Academy Championship which will be hosted by Air Force next Sunday. Last season Navy crowned five title winners while sending three others to championship bouts as the Mids claimed their 10th team title. Overall, Navy placed nine of its 10 wrestlers among the top three of last year's championship. CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Army and Harvard split the 10 bouts right down the middle, but it was senior Daniel Mills' pin in the heavyweight matchup that sealed the Black Knights' 24-17 upset victory over the 25th-ranked Crimson in an EIWA dual match on Saturday afternoon inside the Malkin Athletic Center. Army (7-5, 4-1 EIWA) began the match with a 12-0 cushion as Harvard forfeited the 125- and 133-pound bouts. Freshman Scott Filbert (125 pounds) and junior Jordan Thome (133) were credited with victories. Black Knight junior Casey Smith extended Army's lead to 15-0 following a 6-2 victory over Patrick Hogan in the 141-pound matchup. Harvard (4-5, 1-3 EIWA) trimmed the Black Knights' advantage to 15-8 following major decision verdicts in the next two bouts. Eighth-ranked Corey Jantzen took down Army sophomore Ryan Bilyeu, 11-0, at 149 pounds, while fourth-ranked Walter Peppelman blanked Black Knight senior Jimmy Rafferty, 12-0, at 157 pounds. Army freshman Cole Gracey made it 18-8 after defeating Ian Roy, 8-2, in the 165-pound bout, but Harvard reeled off three consecutive wins to pull to within 18-17 heading into the final match of the contest. That set the stage for a winner-take-all heavyweight bout, and Mills wasted little time securing Army's fourth straight victory by pinning Davig Ng in 56 seconds. Army returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 5, when the Black Knights travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to compete at the 18th annual All-Academy Championships. Match Notes: Army improves to 23-11 all-time versus Harvard ... it marks the Black Knights' second victory over a ranked opponent this season ... St. Cloud, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University wrestling team proved once again why it is the top team in the nation with a 26-9 dual win over No. 3 ranked Augustana College Friday night in its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference home dual of the season. The No. 1 ranked Huskies (17-0, 4-0 NSIC) have now won 22 consecutive dual matches while avenging their last dual loss, which Augustana (9-2, 1-1 NSIC) handed them last January. St. Cloud State has posted dual-match victories against five of the nation's top 10 teams this season as SCSU started the match with a pin from junior and No. 1 ranked heavyweight Jake Kahnke (Monticello) and never looked back. Kahnke is now 25-1 on the season after pinning his opponent in 4:24 to set the tone early. Then sophomore Dylan Wright (Inver Grove Heights) handed Augies Cody Lensing his first loss of the season (10-1) with a 5-3 decision to improve to 13-9 on the season. BOISE, Idaho -- Mike Mangrum and Clayton Jack each won their 29th bouts of the season and Oregon State scored the final seven points in an 18-16 win over Boise State Friday night. Taylor Meeks teamed with Jack to win via decision and major decision at 197 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, to pull the Beavers out from a five-point deficit to a two-point win. Meeks was a 6-0 winner over Brent Chriswell which was followed by Jack's 15-5 major decision over J.T. Felix. The win was Oregon State's eighth of the season as it improved to 8-2. It also marked the Beavers' first season sweep of Boise State since 1999. Pat Rollins opened the dual with a 12-2 major decision over Landon Hartley at 125 pounds for the redshirt freshman's 22nd win of the season. That 4-0 lead was pushed to 4-3 when Shawn Jones defeated James Roberts, 4-2, at 133 pounds. The Beavers, however, jumped out to an 11-3 advantage on the strength of a Mangrum major decision over Josh Strait at 141, 15-4, and Scott Sakaguchi's 4-1 win over Steven Hernandez at 149. Oregon State lost its next four bouts – three decisions and a major decision – to allow the Broncos to jump out to a 16-14 lead. The lone bout featuring two ranked wrestlers on the night was a 9-5 win by No. 14 George Ivanov at 157 pounds over the Beavers' RJ Pena. Rashad Evans and Phil Davis (Photo/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) Event: UFC on FOX 2: Evans vs. Davis Venue: United Center (Chicago) Date: Jan. 28, 2012 The UFC Monster is on fire, going 8-1 for a profit of $480 on the UFC 142 card. Now, finally after seven years of making predictions against the betting line established by Las Vegas oddsmakers, I'm showing a total net profit of $135 as documented below. Generally, I make predictions on the UFC PPV fights only, but I want to strike while the iron's hot, so let's see how we can do on this superb fight card being shown FREE on FOX TV. The prelims are also being shown live, and for free on Fuel TV, if you can find that channel! Tonight's card is a showcase for wrestling fans. Some of the best pure wrestlers, All-Americans, and national champions will be pitted against each other in a night full of exciting Windy City fights. So let's take a look at the action and find some winners to pad our bankroll. The featured fight pits former light heavyweight champion (205 pounds) and Michigan State wrestler Rashad Evans (16-1-1) against unbeaten former Penn State four-time All-American and NCAA champ Phil Davis (7-0). Evans' only loss was to Lyota Machida, who took his belt away 2 .5 years ago. Injuries have delayed Evans' title shot again after three consecutive wins (Thiago Silva, Rampage Jackson, Tito Ortiz). A win here, and he will get a shot at former training partner, Jonny "Bones" Jones for the belt. Some reward. Davis has been impressive in his short career, and his wrestling skills may be the better of the two. But no title shot has been promised to him, and most likely, he will need a fight or two before getting anywhere near Bones Jones. Octagon experience, quality of opponents, and better striking will be the difference here, as the focused Evans won't be denied. This is a five-round non-title fight. It won't go the distance. Rashad has KOs in the UFC over Tito Ortiz (16-10), Forrest Griffin (16-10), Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell (21-8), Sean Salmon (18-18), and Jason Lambert (25-12). Davis has none. A third-round KO will end this, after Davis gives it his best shot, and controls much of the action on the ground. It just won't be enough. Lay the -175 on Rashad Evans. Two of the sport's biggest trash talkers meet when former Oregon AA, Chael Sonnen (26-11-1), and Brit Michael Bisping (22-3) tangle to determine who fights Anderson "Spider" Silva next for the middleweight (185 pounds) belt. Mark Munoz was supposed to meet Sonnen here, but is out with an injury. That's too bad as Munoz was a juicy 'dog to Sonnen. This is a pure wrestler (Sonnen) vs. striker (Bisping) affair. We know how those things usually end (wrestlers win, of course), but the betting line is steep here, and it almost puts me on the sidelines. Neither fighter is anyone I care for. They are both obnoxious promoters of a sport I love. Despite the ridiculous -400 price tag on Sonnen, I think he is the play here. Chael is one of the best pure MMA wrestlers out there. He should control the action and get his fair share of ground-and-pound in on the bewildered Bisping. Bisping is a quality striker, using both fists and kicks to do his damage. It is certainly possible that he catches Sonnen with a knee or punch, as he tries to defend the takedown, but my bet is that Sonnen will get his takedowns regardless and will earn a convincing three-round decision. Sonnen's Achilles heel is that he has been submitted eight times in his 11 losses. However, Bisping hasn't won by submission in almost six years, so that's not likely to happen. That leaves the Brit needing a KO to cash. I don't see it happening. Lay the -400 on Sonnen and watch him lay-and-pray. Brazilian middleweight Demian Maia (15-3 with 8 submissions) won his first six UFC fights by submission. Wow. But that was then and this is now. Maia is an improved striker, and is now concentrating on wrestling. His opponent is undefeated former Hofstra All-American wrestler, Chris Weidman (7-0), who is a late replacement for Bisping, who moved up to fight Sonnen. Strangely, they have made Weidman the favorite here despite the late, unexpected opportunity. I jumped on Maia immediately at +140 as I think he has the edge in striking, jui-jitsu, and overall experience. Weidman is a beast and could certainly win this, but I think the better value lies in Maia. I'm predicting a second round choke submission for the Brazilian. Take Maia and the +135, which is the current price. Now let's take a quick look at the undercard to be shown in its entirety on Fuel TV. Lightweight (155 pounds) Evan Dunham (12-2 with 6 subs) has jui-jitsu skills on a different level than his opponent, former Minnesota wrestler Nik Lenz (21-4-2 with 9 subs). The -350 price tag is high, but Dunham wins this one at on a second round rear-naked choke. Big heavyweight Jon Olav Einemo (6-2 with 5 subs) will give Mike Russow (14-1 with 8 subs) all he can handle. But Russow wins by submission in the first round and cashes at a reasonable price of -150. Tho' an Einemo submission wouldn't shock me. Extreme Couture fighter Cub Swanson (15-5 with 7 subs) looks to win this featherweight (145 pounds) fight by outworking his opponent, George Roop (12-8-1). He gets it done here, and wins a unanimous decision at odds of -120. The betting public is pounding Roop, but I like Cub. The Mexacutioner Joey Beltran (13-6 with 11 KOs) will go toe-to-toe, trading punches with former Strikeforce heavyweight, (265 pounds) Lavar "Big" Johnson (15-5) until one of them drops. My token is on Beltran at -215. I see a second-round KO ending this one. Lightweight Charles Oliveira (14-2) should have little trouble disposing of Eric Wisely (19-6), who is making his UFC debut. Oliveira wins by first round submission, ending his two fight losing streak. Former Oklahoma State wrestler Shane Roller (10-5) has lost two straight, but should get back on track here with a decision over Michael "The Menace" Johnson (9-6) in a lightweight match. ... and finally middleweight Muay Thai specialist Chris Carmozzi (15-5) is full of tattoos and confidence. He edges Dustin Jacoby (6-1) with a split decision. Lay the -170 on Carmozzi. Now let's take a look at what we can do with our fictitious $1000 bankroll. We will show no mercy on the bookmakers. Let's lay $175 to win $100 on Rashad Evans to KO Phil Davis. Let's lay $100 to win $25 on Chael Sonnen's wrestler vs. striker match-up. Let's lay $100 to win $135 on Demian Maia to choke-out Chris Weidman. Let's lay $175 to win $50 on Evan Dunham's jits technique. Let's lay $75 to win $50 on Russow over Einimo in the land of giants. Let's lay $48 to win $40 on Cub Swanson. Let's lay $48 to win $40 on Joey Beltran to get the better of Lavar Johnson. Let's lay $75 to win $15 on Charles Oliveira to get back on track. Let's lay $105 to win $50 on Shane Roller to roll ... Let's lay $65 to win $50 on Chris Carmozzi and his tattoos. In total we are risking $1004 to win $555. It won't be easy, but I think we can make a profit. Please only wager with money that you can afford to lose, or just sit back and enjoy the fights. I know I will. And, don't forget to give some of your winnings to your local youth wrestling program where tomorrow's champions are born. Good luck!
