PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Rutgers wrestling team won eight of 10 bouts to drop Princeton, 27-9, Saturday night at Jadwin Gym. The Scarlet Knights (6-2, 3-0 EIWA) took four of the first five bouts and never looked back, as redshirt sophomore Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) pinned the Tigers Cole Lampan in the first round of the heavyweight bout to seal the win. RU improved to 39-33-5 all-time with the win over the Tigers, winning for the 18th straight time. Redshirt freshman Phil Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.) won in exciting fashion at 174 pounds, earning a takedown with less than 10 seconds remaining to defeat Princeton’s Brett Harner. Redshirt senior Dan Seidenberg (Red Bank, N.J.) and redshirt junior Nick Visicaro (Long Branch, N.J.) also earned victories at 184 and 165 pounds, respectively. The Scarlet Knights entered the intermission with a 12-6 lead, winning four of the first five bouts while also gaining the riding time point in the wins. Highlighting the victories was a 5-0 decision by freshman Corey Stasenko (South Plainfield, N.J.) at 149 pounds, the first dual victory of his career. Redshirt sophomore Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) controlled the 157 pound bout, earning a 7-2 victory over Princeton’s Matt Gancayco. Freshman 125-pounder Scott DelVecchio (South Plainfield, N.J.), who wrestled at 133 pounds against the Tigers in the place of redshirt senior Vinnie Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.), scored a comeback win over Princeton’s Jordan Laster. DelVecchio trailed, 3-1, entering the final period, but used a pair of takedowns and escapes to capture an 8-5 win. Dellefave did not wrestle due to illness. Filling in for DelVecchio at 125 pounds was freshman Sean McCabe (Connetquot, N.Y.), who picked up his second dual win of the season with a 7-2 decision over Princeton’s Ryan Cash. RU is in action next on Jan. 3, 2014, when the squad welcomes Columbia to the College Ave. Gym for its second home dual of the season. CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The eighth-ranked Missouri Tigers wrestling program continues to crown champions this season, placing first in six of 10 weight classes at the UNI Open Saturday in CedarFalls, Iowa. In the final event of the 2013 calendar year, 10 Tigers advanced to the finals, and a total of 19 grapplers finished in the top-5 of their respective brackets. Mizzou has had six champions one other time this season, in early November at the Daktronics Open on South Dakota State’s campus. At 133 pounds, senior Eric Wilson simply never gave up. In his first match of the day, the Colorado-native trailed Drew Walker of Campbell University with little timeleft. But the senior battled and battled and eventually scored two points on Walker with seconds remaining. Wilson met with Northern Iowa’s Levi Wolfensperger In the finals, and again took the lead in the third after trailing for the majority of the bout. Wilson trailed 4-2 with two minutes remaining, but found a way to turn Wolfensperger for a three backpoints and an eventual 5-4 decision. Wolfensperger was nearly an All-American last year, falling to former Tiger Nathan McCormick in the All-American round via the fall. Two Tigers, Lavion Mayes and Trevor Jauch, advanced to the 141-pound final with Jauch edging out Mayes. As time ticked away in the third, Mayes escaped Jauch’s grasp to take a 4-3 lead, but the Tiger sophomore fired right back with another double leg, making the score 5-4 with under 20 seconds left. Jauch wrestled hard all day, tabbing two wins via major decision and a fall in the first round. Junior-captain Drake Houdashelt did what he does best on the mat Saturday, winning all five matches with bonus points, outscoring his counterparts 88-19, including the 21 points hescored in a pin over Jacob Colon. Houdashelt responded well after his firstloss of the season to Tywan Claxton of Ohio earlier this month. He ranks No. 3 in the nation at 149 pounds, a weight class that has been a game of musicalchairs in the top-5 so far this year. If one thing stood out on Saturday, it is that the Tigers continue to shine at 157 pounds this season. Not only do they have the sixth-ranked 157-pounder in the nation in Kyle Bradley, who took the title match, but freshman Joey Lavallee just keeps onwinning in open tournaments. The two combined have finished either first orsecond in six of seven open tournaments this year, with the exception beingLavallee’s fourth place finish at the Daktronics Open, his first collegiate wrestling tournament ever. The 165-pound finalalso showcased two Tigers in seniors Zach Toal and Jordan Gagliano. Toal only needed 2:14 to top his teammate by pin, his third of the afternoon. Toal, ranked No. 10, improves to 12-1 on the year with five falls. True freshman J’den Cox, ranked 12th by USA Today/AWN at 197-pounds, continued to dominate open tournaments with his third title in as many tries. Cox blew through the top of his bracket, posting four decision wins while never being taken down by his opponents. In the final, Cox faced off against Northern Iowa’s Basil Minto. Cox scored in the first few minutes of the match to lead 3-0, and was able to defend against an urgent Minto en route to a 3-1 win. He, like Houdashelt, responded well after falling to Ohio’s Phil Wellington last Friday. Mizzou dropped championship bouts at 125 and 184 pounds. Redshirt freshman Zach Synon lost a shootout to Northern Iowa’s Dylan Peters, 11-8. Synon struck first with a takedown early, but Peters responded with a reversal, escape and takedown of his own after Synon was pegged for a locked hands penalty. Mizzou’s 125-pounder battled hard on top in the third period but couldn’t find a way to turn Peters. Mizzou’s junior-captain Johnny Eblen lost his final match of the day to Minnesota’s Kevin Steinhaus, 3-1. Eblen held a 1-0 lead all the way into the third, but Steinhaus escaped the down position to start the period, and followed with a takedown at the edge of the circle. Steinhaus ranks as high as fourth in the nation for the Gophers. In addition, nine Tigers placed third, fourth or fifth. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Hoosier Wrestling made quick work of Manchester University (2-3) Saturday afternoon, dismantling the Spartans 52-0. No. 24 Indiana (7-1) tallied five pins and three technical falls, allowing just a pair of bouts to go the distance during a 57-minute match. Redshirt junior Joe Duca started the day off by blanking Alan Mock, 16-0, in the 125-pound bout. He wasted little time, taking down Mock in the first five seconds and gathering a 10-0 lead after the opening period. The second stanza began with Duca in the top position and ended after he turned the Spartan twice, completing his third tech fall of the season. True freshman Chris Caton took the mat next for IU, sticking his opponent late in the first period. He led 2-1 before nailing a nasty gator roll to put Kalib Jackson on his back. The smack of the mat came seconds later and the Hoosiers were out to an 11-0 edge on the team scoreboard. An early scramble on the edge of the mat put Ethan Raley in trouble at 141 pounds before the Hoosier ultimately came out on the right end for the takedown. He then sunk in a deep half nelson to bury Josh Juarez with a pin at the 1:33 mark. Joe Randazzo made the most of his last match of the 2013-14 season, posting a 7-3 decision at 149 pounds. The redshirt sophomore is scheduled to spend the spring semester studying aboard in Rome. Randazzo carded a pair of takedowns, a reversal and the riding time bonus point en route to his victory. Taylor Walsh (21-0), ranked fifth nationally at 157 pounds, needed just 29 seconds to flatten his foe for pin number 18 of the season; and 11th consecutive fall. That total leads the country and is already tied for the second most in school history (Kurt Kinser, 2008). The all-time Hoosier record is 19 by Rob Chamberlin in 1981. For his career, Walsh has accumulated 39 falls, good for fifth most in IU history. No. 22 Ryan LeBlanc kept the bonus points coming in the subsequent bout, majoring Dylan Lauffer 13-4. He racked up five takedowns and a reversal, capturing his team-leading seventh major decision of the season. LeBlanc entered the weekend ranking second in the country with 21 overall wins. He now sits at 22-4 on the year. Leading 12-4, Nate Jackson elected to start the third period in the top position and the aggressive choice paid off. Less than a minute later, Jackson turned Logan Floor and recorded a fall at 5:50. The Hoosier lead inflated to 36-0. No. 14 Luke Sheridan (20-3) registered Indiana's fifth fall of the match and fourth coming in the first period. He built a 6-2 lead prior to beating the buzzer and getting the pins at 2:49. Garret Goldman completely dominated his bout. The Bloomington native notched a quick takedown and flipped his abused adversary for a total of 12 near-fall points before the opening frame mercifully came to an end. It was a neutral start for the second period, setting up Goldman's takedown for the 16-0 tech fall and his fifth straight triumph overall. It was much the same for Hoosier heavyweight Adam Chalfant, cruising to a 19-3 technical fall of his own. Chalfant (15-1), ranked eighth nationally, picked an ankle and drove Ray Wajda straight to his back to begin the bout with a five-point move and never looked back. Time to get into that New York state of mind. There is always a feeling of hopelessness when a large bureaucratic body is left to decide to the future of a good-spirited, upwardly mobile organization. Wrestling, a sport with a reputation as a bottom-feeder among college athletic directors, has often taken the brutal end of the Louisville Slugger when it came to fortuitous moments. But this week our sport's fortune, and future, was changed forever. The NCAA, in a moment of financial brilliance has chosen the media capital of the world to host the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships. It's a publicity coup for the sport and in a crowded field of common bid cities. Instead of wallowing in a media no-go zone like Kansas City, wrestling will be on the Madison Square Garden marquee. There were leaders behind this push who in time will be recognized for their hard work, but in the meantime let's all bask in the glory of the achievement. Our community has shown loyalty and strength over the past year, and it's because of our passion and commitment to the sport we love that this type of accomplishment can be awarded to the sport. To your questions ... Wasn't it a disservice to Cael Sanderson for InterMat to drop Penn State from the No. 1 spot in the team rankings? Penn State is delicately managing their roster right now, and nobody better at doing that than Cael. Had the Hawkeyes really shown anything that indicated they will make up the 123.5 - 73 point deficit from last year's NCAAs? No, they hadn't, and after the debacle at Edinboro, InterMat rankings people have to feel a little sheepish, don't they? -- Cal Foley: I'm not on the InterMat ranking committee, but I'm sure they always feel sheepish and beaten down. Punks, right? Anyway, these wimps created an objective measurement for team rankings based on the current individual rankings of a team's wrestlers, and how many points that ranking would earn them at NCAAs. It's just numbers. On the non-ranking front, Penn State is still my favorite to win the NCAA title, but don't think for a moment that they have sealed the team race in December. Minnesota has three top-ranked wrestlers. Oklahoma looks incredible, and Iowa is Iowa. We are in for another classic NCAA tournament. Bonus points will matter, which makes Penn State a favorite, and every match, every round, meaningful. Q: What is your assessment of the sites picked for the next few NCAAs (through 2018)? All the buzz seems to be about NYC, but how would you breakdown the positives and negatives of each site? -- Jeff N. Foley: As you can tell, I'm pretty excited by the New York City event, however, there are two other cities that have earned bids. According to the details rumored to be in the package, the NCAA was guaranteed $500k by the state of Missouri for each event. St. Louis is a comfy spot for wrestling fans, and since the money was good the NCAA seemed to prefer it to also-rans like Louisville. I think St. Louis can be awesome, but there are some major flaws to the city hosting every season -- namely the lack of good late-night dining options. I once ended up at a White Castle, sober, at midnight. Nobody should have to endure that stomach bomb while attending their sport's biggest event. Cleveland gets a crappy rap for being depressed and awful. I don't LOVE Cleveland, but the food scene is pretty decent, downtown can be active and the hotels are class. The city is drivable from the Midwest, a very short jaunt for western Pennsylvania and the airport has enough flights from major hubs to ensure that we can all make the flight home. I'm willing, with cautious optimism, to endorse Cleveland, though I acknowledge that the NCAA did butter me up by giving us New York City. Q: Rob Koll and J Rob are both program builders. They did it with different platforms, one Ivy and one in the Big Ten. My question to you: Who is the next Rob Koll and J Robinson? -- Ben L. Foley: I got great news, there are many more than two program-building coaches ascending right now. My guy Steve Garland is building an army of blunt-faced wrestlers with good grades at the University of Virginia. Virginia Tech's Kevin Dresser has shown the skill to coach 'em from the crib and create massive publicity for his program. Mark Cody will have Oklahoma winning an NCAA title in the next five years. Stanford's Jason Borrelli has another top-ranked wrestler and the team is ranked No. 15 in the country. Northwestern's Drew Pariano has the top-ranked recruiting class in the country and a handful of wrestlers who could contend for the NCAA championship in 2014. Doug Schwab has taken Northern Iowa into the top 15. J Robinson is in his 28th season as Minnesota's coach (Photo/Simon Jimenez, WrestlersAreWarriors.com)That's a long list, but the point is that you should consider Coach Robinson and Coach Koll to be visionaries within college coaching. They have changed the idea of what is expected from a Division I wrestling coach. It's no longer good enough to just have hammers in your lineup. You need to be good at promotions and alumni relations. You need to be a priority of the athletic department, not dead weight. These guys are the new class and I expect that with more turnover in the coming years we'll have another few guys to add to the list. MULTIMEDIA HALFTIME Link: Wrestling at Sandy Hook "Imagination is actually a dream." #StopNow Princeton promotion Q: Your thoughts on the Ben Askren situation? Why do so many wrestlers get away from wrestling when they enter MMA? Askren does very little but wrestle. I have yet to see anyone stop his takedowns. Scrambling, mat awareness, and the "feel" can never be matched by people outside out sport and no amount of "cross training" will ever neutralize it. To say otherwise is the greatest insult to our sport. When are these guys going to realize that you train to compliment wrestling, not transform into something completely different. See my attached video. King Mo thinks he can box. He attempted no takedown. He was on the World Team. If he wants to plant someone no one in UFC could stop him (other than another wrestler). Tim, you were an All-American, can you honestly say that if a good athlete who cross-trained to do standups could actually get out from you? -- Frank C. Foley: You make an excellent point. Askren has realized that with continued improvement in his jiu-jitsu and striking, he can focus on his wrestling, not work to escape it. There are a million ways to win and lose a fight, but Askren minimizes those risks by smothering his opponents on the ground. Sure, he gets knocked around on occasion and has been forced to fight off deep submissions, but his wrestling, and his absolute laser focus on using it, has left him relatively untouched. I've been fortunate to train MMA in some major gyms and have found that if you're able to close the distance without getting your head knocked off, it's possible to take down almost any fighter who doesn't have a significant background in wrestling. Holding them there is also possible, though it's made more difficult by the gloves, which make it tough to lock your hands for mat returns and other control positions. There are always exceptions, but for the most part if you were a good top wrestler in college, there are very few non-wrestlers who should be able to earn an escape in the cage. Q: When's the next Backpoints podcast? Are you happy with the way homeland is closing the season? What's a Merkel or Merkle? Do you ever yell at the Student U broadcasters through your computer screen or TV? Is it me or all of a sudden freestyle seems more interesting than seven-plus minutes of 1-1 SV? Will Ed Ruth wrestle against Ohio State? Without him I see it five matches each? Wasn't the crowd at Iowa-Edinboro the way every match should be? -- CB Foley: Love the rapid-fire questions. Will answer in a similar fashion. Month? We are on hiatus as I travel. Haven't seen the last two episodes, but I liked the Navy Seal episode -- no spoilers! Haven't watched this year's broadcasts, but yes. More exciting in 2013, but I prefer NCAA wrestling. I think so. 6-4. Sure, but that requires a top five team, plenty of promotion, and Bruce Baumgartner's mustache. Q: What ever happened to the Living the Dream Medal Fund? Is it still active? I ask because I recently got calls from both DNC and RNC volunteers campaigning for donation in support of the 2014 mid-term elections. In my opinion, funding the dreams of our Olympic hopefuls can't be an "oh-its-an-Olympic-year-let's-raise-money" endeavor and should be treated with the same urgency in off years as in Olympic years. Not easy, I know, but we saw what happened when we, as a community, "dimmed the lights" on our sport. -- Dylan M. Foley: Yes. Our Olympic hopefuls are still being rewarded for their wins. Any perceived falloff in the fundraising campaign has to be attributed to the #SaveOlympicWrestling movement which mobilized much of USA Wrestling's fundraising operation. We will see a re-commitment to this effort, though it's unclear if the goals will be larger now that wrestling needs to show the IOC that it's not only worth its Olympic position, but that it can be profitable. To do that, we'll need to retain the best athletes. InterMat senior writer T.R. Juba, South Sudan -- The non-profit groups Wrestling Roots Foundation (WRF) and The Fetzer Institute have partnered to bring a peace-building wrestling tournament to the people of South Sudan. The two-day wrestling match will begin on Saturday, Dec. 14 and conclude on Saturday, Dec. 21 at Juba Stadium in Juba Town. Tribes from around South Sudan are meeting in Juba this week for wrestling matches and peace-building activitiesThe project builds on the idea that sport and competition can bring people together in a unique way, as Nelson Mandela described: "Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers." The peace-building initiative will feature wrestling teams from three of South Sudan's largest wrestling states; Central Equatoria, Lakes, and Jonglei. Each team consists of 15 wrestlers, three coaches and six entertainers. Lakes and Central Equatoria will meet on Dec. 14 for the right to face defending champions Jonglei in the finals on Saturday, Dec. 21. Wrestling Roots founder and executive director T.R. Foley says he believes that the tournament will help build a bond of friendship and repair many of the fractured relationships left after decades of conflict. "Wrestling has the unique power to unite people around a cultural activity that promotes their commonality and creates dialogue," says Foley. "Traditional wrestling in South Sudan works because the tribes involved in the competition share common values. Wrestling is defined by strength, control and balance -- not violence. Though a sport designed for the physically and mentally tough, wrestling helps deliver the message of peace." The WRF is partnering with the Fetzer Institute to bring the tournament to South Sudan. The Fetzer Institute works to foster awareness of the power that love, forgiveness, and compassion can have in our world. Located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the Institute was founded by broadcasting pioneer John Fetzer. Fetzer believes the wrestling tournament is a productive start for what could become a larger idea of improving communication and healing wounds through sport. Program Officer Michelle Scheidt said the project is a way to promote unity. "Wrestling for Peace can help us see the power of sport to bring people together across boundaries. The tournament offers common ground for groups who have suffered from bitter conflicts. Competing provides a way for the athletes to get to know one another and to discover their common humanity, developing personal connections that show the power of love and forgiveness to overcome division." In addition to competing in front of large crowds in the South Sudan capital, wrestlers will also be asked to engage in a discussion about love and forgiveness on Wednesday, December 18. Local politicians, school children and fans of the sport are expected to attend. The discussion will help draw out the deeper meaning behind the tournament and identify productive next steps. "We're not just having them wrestle and have fun together," says Foley. "We are interviewing the participants about their lives and recording what effects the week of wrestling and other events have on their understanding of each other. We want the idea of love and reconciliation to grow." NORTHFIELD, MINN. -- Coming back from a 12-0 deficit, the No.25 Central College wrestling team knocked off No. 22 St. Olaf (Minn.) 35-15 Thursday night. Both teams are ranked on D3wrestle.com, and coach Eric Van Kley is proud of the Dutch (2-2 overall) comeback and effort. “Overall, it was the best effort of the year,” he said. “It was a good dominant win against a ranked opponent.” Van Kley highlighted Tyler Lowy (junior, Phoenix, Ariz., Thunderbird HS) who claimed a last second win at 197 pounds. Lowy pinned his opponent with just one second to spare. “When we were down 12-0, Tyler’s win in 6:59 really gave us the momentum to head in the right direction,” Van Kley said. “He wrestled well and was big in helping us secure our team win.” Powered by Lowy’s victory, the Dutch seniors stepped up with wins by TJ Peretti (Auburn, Wash., Mountainview HS) at 149 and Keegan Overby (Modesto, Calf., Ceres HS) at 165. Peretti had a 14-6 decision win while Overby was victorious with a 17-4 major decision. “TJ may have had the best effort of the night,” said Van Kley. “He was avenging a loss from the weekend.
