EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State wrestling got a pin from Javier Gasca and a major decision from Logan Griffin to boost the Spartans to a thrilling 19-17 victory for MSU over Maryland Sunday afternoon at Jenison Field House for the Spartans' first Big Ten victory this season. With the win, MSU improves to 1-4 in B1G action and 3-6 overall, and bounced back from a heartbreaking, 23-21, loss at Northwestern Friday night. Maryland fell to 2-9 overall and 0-4 in B1G competition. MSU now holds a 3-1 series advantage, avenging last year's loss. The Spartans' two previous victories over the Terrapins were in 1968 and 1969. The win was also the first Big Ten victory for head coach Roger Chandler, who is in his first year as head coach. "It feels good, I'm happy for the guys. They've been working really hard and have bought into the process of competing for the full seven minutes. We still have some work to do there, but they've been working hard and it paid off today," MSU head coach Roger Chandler said. Michigan State got wins from redshirt-freshman Logan Griffin at 125 pounds, redshirt junior Javier Gasca at 141, redshirt freshman Austin Thompson at 157, redshirt freshman Logan Ritchie at 174 and redshirt sophomore Shwan Shadaia at 184. With the wins, Gasca and Thompson continue to share the team-lead for victories, now both with 19 on the season. Griffin picked up a 12-1 major decision over Maryland's Alex Vargas to improve to 2-0 on the weekend after a win Friday night at Northwestern. The Spartan improved to 16-7 on the year after his fourth major decision of the season and his 10th bonus-point win. Gasca pinned Jhared Simmons of Maryland in 5:59. It was Gasca's sixth fall of the season and 12th bonus-point victory, improving to 19-5 this season, winning seven of the last 10 as part of winning 27 of his last 33 regular-season bouts dating back to last year. "I just stayed true to myself and kept attacking, I wrestled for the entire seven minutes of the match and just tried to wrestle as smart as I could," Gasca said. Thompson collected a 5-2 decision over the Terps' Justin Alexander for his second win of the weekend, as part of winning nine of his last 13 bouts. With the win, Thompson improved to 19-9 on the season. Ritchie beat Sam Rowell of Maryland, 8-1, to pick up his sixth-straight win, but was his first dual win of the year, improving to 9-6 this season. The Spartan redshirt freshman has won seven of his last nine. Shadaia had perhaps the most exciting matches of the afternoon, earning a hard-fought, 3-2 decision over Maryland's Idris White as Shadaia came from behind after White scored the first two points of the bout. The match was 2-2 throughout but Shadaia controlled the action and earned the riding time point for the thrilling 3-2 decision. It was Shadaia's third win in his last five bouts, leveling his season mark at 8-8. The Spartans wrap up their three home events in a four-match stretch by hosting in-state foe Central Michigan on Friday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. at Jenison Field House as part of the annual "Tumbles and Takedowns" with the MSU gymnastics team. Bout-By-Bout 125: Logan Griffin (MSU) maj. dec. Alex Vargas (UMD), 12-1 Griffin controlled action in the opening period, but couldn't get any points, leaving the bout scoreless after one frame. The Spartan got a four-point near fall with less than a minute left in period two for a 4-1 lead before Vargas escaped for a point. Griffin added another near fall and got four points for it just before the second period horn and an 8-1 advantage. Griffin's advantage grew to 11-1 win an escape and a takedown and added the riding points for the 12-1 major decision. 133: Billy Rappo (UMD) dec. Austin Eicher (MSU), 2-0 The bout opened with back-and-forth action, but no score through the first period. Rappo got on the board escaping from the second period starting position and the score stayed 1-0 through the end of the frame. Eicher had control in the early going of the third period, but couldn't get any points and Rappo got the riding time point and the 2-0 decision. 141: No. 19 Javier Gasca (MSU) fall Jhared Simmons (UMD), 5:59 Gasca jumped into control early and didn't relinquish, scoring a near fall and adding takedowns for an 9-0 lead. A Simmons escape earned him a point and got on the board, but then a near fall and a take down opened up a 13-1 advantage. Gasca opened the third period with a takedown for a 15-1 lead and then pinned Simmons at 5:59. It was Gasca's sixth fall of the season and 12th extra-point victory. 149: No. 15 Alfred Bannister (UMD) dec. Nick Trimble (MSU), 6-5 Bannister opened a 3-0 lead with an escape and a takedown, before Trimble escaped to close to 3-1 after one period. Trimble scored another escape early in the second stanza to close to 3-2. A technical violation and a takedown gave Trimble a 5-3 lead before Bannister escaped and then added a takedown late in the waning seconds for the comeback decision. 157: Austin Thompson (MSU) dec. Justin Alexander (UMD), 5-2 Alexander took a 2-1 lead with a takedown and a Thompson escape and the 2-1 score held through the end of the frame and all the way through the second period. Thompson escaped from the opening period starting position to level the score at 2's. The Spartan scored a takedown with 30 seconds left in the bout for a 4-2 lead. The bout was stopped with 18 seconds left as the Maryland head coach Kerry McCoy challenged the call and the officials reviewed the takedown. After the review, the takedown call stood, leaving the score 4-2 and Thompson controlled the final seconds and added a point for riding time and the 5-2 decision. 165: Patrick Gerish (UMD) fall Drew Hughes (MSU), 4:43 Hughes got out to a 2-0 lead with a takedown, adding a four-point near fall and a 6-0 advantage after the first frame. Gerish closed to 6-2 with a takedown but then gained control and got Hughes on his back and pinned the Spartan at 4:43 for the upset. 174: Logan Ritchie (MSU) dec. Sam Rowell (UMD), 8-1 Ritchie jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a takedown and a two-point near fall, and held the 4-0 lead through the end of the first frame and into the second, adding an escape from the second period starting position for a 5-0 advantage early in the second stanza. The score remained 5-0 after two periods before Rowell earned a point by escaping after being down in the starting position. Ritchie added a takedown for a 7-1 lead and added the riding time point for the 8-1 decision victory. 184: Shwan Shadaia (MSU) dec. Idris White (UMD), 3-2 White scored a takedown with a minute left in the opening period and a 2-0 lead. Shadaia evened the score on a pair of escapes, first from a restart in the first period and the second from the period two starting position. The score remained 2-2 after two periods. Despite not scoring any points in the final period, Shadaia controlled the action and earned riding time for the thrilling 3-2 decision. 197: David-Brian Whisler (UMD) dec. Matt Okaiye (MSU), 3-2 Whisler got a takedown in the opening minute of the first frame, before Okaiye earned an escape to close to 2-1, and that score held through the end of the period. The Terp added an escape for a 3-1 advantage through two periods. Okaiye escaped from the starting position to close to 3-2, but couldn't get any more points and Whisler hung on for the 3-2 decision. HWT: Youssif Hemida (UMD) dec. Jacob Cooper (MSU), 5-0 Hemida scored a takedown in the opening minute of action for a 2-0 advantage, which held through the first frame. The Terp escaped from the second period starting position for a 3-0 lead and that remained the score through the middle period and into the third. LARAMIE, Wyo. -- On the strength of five bonus point victories, the University of Wyoming wrestling team earned a 32-14 triumph over Oregon State on Sunday afternoon in the UniWyo Sports Complex. “The start that we had this afternoon was what we were looking for,” UW head coach Mark Branch said. “It was great to see the way we started and that put Oregon State in a hole, which then makes it easier for our next guy up in the dual. We had a different attitude today and with that we looked like a different team. It wasn't our usual lineup but we wanted to throw a couple different guys out there to see what they could do. I was pleased with the effort and I hope it can continue.” Junior Archie Colgan, ranked No. 17 at 157, got Wyoming off to a fast start with a 16-1 tech fall over Abraham Rodriguez. Colgan used two takedowns as well as two four point near falls to get the comfortable win. The tech was Colgan's fifth bonus-point victory of the season. Redshirt sophomore Branson Ashworth made quick work of Rodney Williams in the second bout of the dual. Ashworth, the 15th ranked wrestler at 165, pinned Williams 1:37 into the match for his fifth fall of the season. Junior Kyle Pope then used momentum for a 17-2 tech fall of Weston Dobler. Pope recorded four total takedowns in the dominant win. The bonus-point win gave UW a 16-0 lead after three matches and was his team leading seventh tech fall this season. Lucas Lovvorn saw his first dual action of the year. The redshirt freshman followed suit for the Pokes and earned a 7-2 decision over Bob Coleman. Lovvorn quickly recorded a first period takedown and never looked back. Additionally, he added another takedown in the third to strengthen his lead. After two-consecutive Beaver wins, senior Drew Templeman added a major decision over Kegan Calkins for the Brown and Gold. Templeman never fell behind in the match and used a takedown and four point near fall in the opening period before adding two more takedowns to seal the victory. The 141 match which featured junior Bryce Meredith, the eighth-ranked wrestler, was a stalemate through the first period and much of the second. Meredith scored a reversal and added a riding time point for the 3-0 decision over Jack Hathaway. Redshirt freshman Ben Hornickle closed out the dual for UW. Hornickle sent the crowd to its feet with a first period pin (1:12) over Bryce Parson to cap off the 32-14 victory. It was the first dual action for Hornickle and also the fifth pin of the season. UW will be back in action on Friday at Cal Poly. The dual is set to begin at 8 p.m. MT. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Five bonus-point victories, including momentum shifting pins by Kollin Moore and Kyle Snyder in the final two matches - lifted fourth-ranked Ohio State to a 29-18 victory over No. 12 Illinois on Sunday in front of 3,279 at St. John Arena. The Buckeyes remain perfect on the year at 7-0 (3-0 B1G) while Illinois is 2-2 (1-2 B1G). THE SHORT STORY Trailing in the team score 18-13 with just three bouts remaining, sophomore Myles Martin started the Buckeyes' rally with an 11-3 major decision at 184 lbs. Moore then followed with a dual-clinching pin at 197 lbs. and Snyder finished off the afternoon with a fall of his own. In the most anticipated bout of the dual, second-ranked Nathan Tomasello controlled fourth-ranked Zane Richards, registering a 12-4 major decision. In all, Ohio State won six of 10 matches and had three falls. ILLINI WIN OUT OF THE GATE The dual started at 125 lbs. and Illinois' Travis Piotrowski scored seven second period points, added a riding time bonus point and picked up a major decision over Jose Rodriguez, 10-0. TOMASELLO MAKES A STATEMENT Trailing 4-0 in the team score, the Buckeyes watched as Tomasello came out scoring early and often in the first period against Richards. The redshirt junior from Parma, Ohio took Richards down three time in the opening three minutes and built up a 7-2 lead heading into the second period following a stalling call on Richards. Smelling bonus points, Tomasello scored one more takedown in both the second and third period while adding his riding time bonus point for the 12-4 major decision. He remains perfect on the year at 9-0 while picking up first third win of the year over a ranked opponent (first vs. the top five). PLETCHER, JORDAN REGISTER W'S True freshman Luke Pletcher improved to 19-2 on the year with his second victory over Mousa Jodeh in the past month (he also defeated Jodeh in the opening round of the Midlands Championships). Pletcher built a 6-2 second-period lead and eventually cruised to a 10-4 decision. In the next bout, Micah Jordan won his team-best 21st match of the year as he pinned Eric Barone is 6:19. Jordan led 6-0 after two periods, took Barone down after starting neutral to begin the third and then finished off the fall. It was also Jordan's team-leading 14th bonus point win and his fifth pin. ILLINI WIN AT 157, 165, 174 Illinois strung together three straight wins - all by bonus points - to surge ahead 18-13 following the 174 bout. At 157, Kyle Langendefer turned up the heat on Anthony DeCarlo in the second and third periods, scoring 12 points to win by technical fall, 18-3. In the next match at 165, two-time NCAA champion and No. 1-ranked Isaiah Martinez also picked up a technical fall, topping Cody Burcher 22-7. Finally, 12th-ranked Zach Brunson won by major decision over Justin Kresevic at 174 pounds, 19-8. TWO PINS, ONE MAJOR FINISHES IT OFF In the second bout of ranked wrestlers on the afternoon, Martin, ranked 10th nationally, controlled the pace against No. 13 Emory Parker and cruised to an 11-3 major decision. Martin scored six critical first-period points, taking Parker down and then turning him on his back for a four-point nearfall. With the win, Martin is now 19-3 overall and a perfect 7-0 in duals. Moore (18-2) clinched the dual when he pinned Andre Lee at 197 lbs. in 4:46. Moore led 11-3 at the time of the fall on the strength of five takedowns and an escape. Snyder (5-0) put an exclamation point on the dual with his fourth pin in five matches this year. He led Duece Rachal 12-6 after the first period on six takedowns and then got three more in the second. On the final one, he turned Rachal on his back and completed the fall in 4:17. WHAT'S NEXT Ohio State returns to the mat next Sunday, Jan. 22, when it takes on Maryland at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Md. LINCOLN, Neb. -- Tied 15-15 after seven matches, No. 5 Nebraska (9-1, 3-1 Big Ten) won each of the last three in a 29-15 victory over No. 13 Michigan during the Tumble N Rumble event at the Devaney Center on Sunday afternoon. During the final three bouts, No. 3 TJ Dudley (184) and No. 15 Collin Jensen earned bonus points, while No. 7 Aaron Studebaker (197) picked up his 100th career win. Dudley, a two-time All-American, pinned Ernest Battaglia in 1:06. Jensen won by technical fall over Dan Perry, 17-2, in the final match of the dual. Studebaker became the 26th wrestler to win 100 career matches at Nebraska with his 2-0 decision over Jackson Striggow. The milestone marked three consecutive weekends where Huskers picked up their 100th career wins. Dudley (184) accomplished the feat at the Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30), while Montoya, who spent his freshman season at Campbell, reached the milestone last weekend against Penn State. Nebraska put six points on the board after the first match with No. 5 Tim Lambert's win by forfeit at 125 pounds. No. 11 Colton McCrystal (141) and No. 3 Tyler Berger (157) also collected victories before NU's late surge. McCrystal topped Sal Profaci by a 7-4 decision, while Berger pinned No. 10 Brian Murphy in 5:25. Michigan managed victories at 133, 149, 165 and 174 pounds. No. 3 Eric Montoya (133) suffered his first loss of the season after an 18-0 start when he fell to No. 8 Stevan Micic, 13-7. PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Army West Point wrestling team used a four-match winning streak to pull ahead of the Penn Quakers, earning an 18-14 victory over its Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) opponent on Sunday afternoon. The Black Knights improve to 4-3 on the season and 2-1 in EIWA matches, while the Quakers fall to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in conference. ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES The Black Knights improved to 15-12-1 all-time against Penn. This was the first time Army defeated the Quakers since 2013-14 when it earned a 21-13 victory in Philadelphia. Head coach Kevin Ward earned the 10th dual win of his career and his team's fourth of the season, setting a new personal best at West Point. Army is currently on a three-match winning streak, its longest since winning four straight in 2013-14. Senior Samson Imonode notched his 16th win of the season, tying a single-season personal best set in 2014-15. Fellow firstie Trevor Smith notched the 12th win of his senior campaign, tying his single-season high from 2013-14 and 2015-16. Smith evened his career record to 38-38. Sophomore Conner Ziegler made his season debut in dual meet action and his first-career dual at 133 lbs. Ziegler documented the first dual victory of his career. MINNEAPOLIS -- Heading to the final match of Sunday's Border Battle dual, a 174-pound bout between familiar foes, Wisconsin had the momentum and the odds in its favor. The Badgers had won three straight matches to erase a nine-point deficit and tie the dual. That final pairing -- Chris Pfarr and No. 20 Ryan Christensen -- had twice wrestled last season and both matches had gone Christensen's way. Wisconsin appeared poised to snap Minnesota's four-match winning streak in the series. Then, in a matter of seven minutes, the home crowd at the Sports Pavilion rose in elation and showered an unlikely hero in cheers and applause. Pfarr, who finished 9-21 last season, gave up the first takedown to Christensen, but did not allow his opponent another. Pfarr scored three of his own, each one driving the volume inside the Pav to a higher level. His final points, scored on a takedown in the closing seconds, sealed a 7-4 win in his match and an 18-15 victory for the Gophers. "I actually didn't know the score of the dual. I knew it was close. Our coaches always say it doesn't matter what the score is, you have to go out there and do you job," said Pfarr. The crowd gave him a sense that his match was critical. "The emotion (in the arena), it was just huge. The crowd was into every second of the match. It was phenomenal." "I thought Chris did a great job at the end for us," said head coach Brandon Eggum. "Giving up the first takedown, that's going to happen in Big Ten matches. He stayed focus. Chris is a guy who is very well-conditioned and physical. The deeper he is into his match, the better it is for us. To stay focused and to keep pushing forward, that's how you win. That's how you contribute to the team." Pfarr was given the opportunity to contribute to the team in such a significant way thanks to four earlier victories for Minnesota, the most notable coming at 133 pounds, where No. 16 Mitch McKee pinned Eli Stickley, scoring the three bonus points that would be the difference in the final score. McKee set up his early pin with a strong shot in the opening seconds of his bout, getting both the leg and the head to cradle up Stickley as the two went to the mat. With more than two minutes remaining in the period, McKee continued to work his weight over Stickley's shoulders and, after nearly a minute of improving his position, pressed Stickley's shoulders to the mat for the pin and six big points for the Gophers. Not only was the pin McKee's first ever in dual competition, it was the first time in his rookie season McKee has scored bonus points in a dual for his hometown team. Personal milestones aside, the fall came at an important moment in the dual. The score was tied at six and 133 would be the last contest before the halftime intermission. The win gave the Gophers a 12-6 advantage and the match's momentum at that moment. "Getting the pin is one of those things you look to do to get the momentum on your side and keep it into the break," said McKee. "A win like that really gets the crowd behind you and keeps the team excited and ready to go." "McKee's dangerous. He's very explosive. He can score a lot of points and put them up there quickly. His win, and to get that fall, was huge for momentum," said Eggum. Minnesota also got victories from No. 2 Brett Pfarr at 197 pounds, No. 6 Ethan Lizak at 125, and No. 13 Tommy Thorn at 141 on Sunday afternoon. For Pfarr, the win was yet another ranked victory, his team-high seventh already this season. Dating back to last season when he bumped up from 184 to 197 pounds, Pfarr is now 22-5 against ranked competitors at his current weight class. He has not lost to a wrestler ranked outside of the top-four in the country during that stretch. Lizak and Thorn's wins were the first either has earned in a dual meet this season. "There were a lot of great matches today. We knew coming in that there would be some closes matches, some ups and downs for both teams. You always want to win the close ones. Today, we got a really nice win and that's always exciting, but we have to keep getting better, and we will," said Eggum. Now 4-2 (3-1). the Gophers continue their Big Ten season on Friday, when they will wrap up a three-dual homestand against Nebraska. YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Wrestling its third road dual in four days, No. 9 Mizzou Wrestling (8-2, 5-0 MAC) showed little signs of a rust in a 22-12 win over Eastern Michigan (5-3, 1-2 MAC) on Sunday at the Convocation Center. Four Tiger wrestlers earned major decision wins to lead Mizzou to the victory, its fifth Mid-American Conference dual win of the season and 26th straight MAC dual win overall dating back to the 2013-14 season. Following a close defeat at 125 pounds, redshirt sophomore 133-pounder John Erneste (Kansas City, Mo.) began the scoring on the day for Mizzou, earning a 17-4 major decision over Sa'Derian Perry. Erneste fell behind early in the first period following two takedowns from Perry, but the Tiger sophomore showed resiliency at the end of the opening frame, escaping each of the takedowns then scoring a takedown of his own and a four-point near-fall as time expired to take an 8-4 lead heading into the second period. He scored another takedown and four-point near-fall in the second, along with a takedown in the third and a riding time point for the 17-4 result. Redshirt freshman 141-pounder Jaydin Eierman (Columbia, Mo.) took the mat next for the Tigers, earning the second major decision of the day in an 18-8 win over Kyle Springer. Eierman scored three takedowns in the first period, one in the second and another in the third, followed by a four-point near-fall before the final buzzer to capture the major. Following decision wins at 149 and 157 pounds from redshirt senior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.) and redshirt junior 157-pounder Joey Lavallee (Reno, Nev.), Mizzou picked up back-to-back major decisions again at 165 and 174 pounds from redshirt sophomore 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) and redshirt freshman 174-pounder Dylan Wisman (Winchester, Va.). After scoring a first period technical fall on Saturday against Cornell, Lewis opened the scoring early again against Devan Marry. The Tiger sophomore scored a takedown 15 seconds into the match and added two two-point near falls and a four-point near fall to grab a 10-0 lead after the opening frame. A reversal in the third period yielded the 12-0 final score. After leading 4-0 after two periods against David Kasper, Wisman scored a reversal and a takedown in the third period, followed by a riding time point to earn the 9-1 major decision. The win finished the scoring for Mizzou in the dual, as Eastern Michigan recorded decision wins in the final three bouts. Mizzou will now return home for its final five regular season duals of the season, beginning with a MAC dual against No. 13 Central Michigan on Sunday, Jan. 22. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- South Dakota State won each of the first five matches by decision and went on to defeat Air Force, 28-6, in a Big 12 Conference wrestling dual Sunday afternoon. With the win, the 20th-ranked Jackrabbits improved to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in Big 12 duals. SDSU has won seven duals in a row since a loss to third-ranked Iowa on Dec. 2. Air Force dropped to 4-3 overall, 0-2 against league foes. Backup 157-pounder Logan Peterson returned to the win column for SDSU with a 7-6 decision over Dane Robbins to open the match. Luke Zilverberg followed with a 5-2 victory over Alex Lopouchanski at 165 pounds and David Kocer recorded a 6-0 shutout of Michael Billingsley in the 174-pound matchup. The Jackrabbit streak reached five as Martin Mueller scored a 7-4 decision over Zen Ikehara at 184 pounds and eighth-ranked 197-pounder Nate Rotert downed Parker Hines by a 10-3 count. Air Force's two victories on the afternoon came in successive matches, starting with Kerry Powers' 3-0 decision over Alex Macki in the heavyweight division. The Falcons' Drew Romero followed with a 12-6 decision over Ben Gillette at 125 pounds. SDSU finished the dual strong with three decisive victories. Arizona State placed third at the Virginia Duals HAMPTON, Va. -- After dropping an early semifinal match to No. 15 Oklahoma, No. 19 ASU rebounded in the nightcap with a close victory, 20-19, vs. North Dakota State to take third place at the Virginia Duals. "Overall, it was a good effort by the team," said head coach Zeke Jones. "We have another trophy coming home to Tempe, so that's good, still not the color [medal] we want, but we're making steps in the right direction. Duals are a collective effort and I thought, for the most part, we did that. Protecting bonus points on both sides, wins and losses, matters when it comes to a team effort." A third-place finish marks the Sun Devils' best placement since finishing third in 1997 and the sixth time ASU has finished in the top four. The other four top-four finishes were between 1988 and 1997 (1988, 1989, 1990, 1997), including three straight second place finishes from 1988-1990. A back-and-forth contest from start to finish, North Dakota State took a 13-0 lead through the first three weight classes following tech fall victories at 125 and 133. Christian Pagdilao scored ASU's first points of the match with a 8-6 decision over Mitchell Friedman before Clayton Ream increased the Bison lead, 16-3, with a decision at 157. Reigning Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week, Anthony Valencia, cut the Sun Devil deficit in half, 16-8, defeating Andrew Fogarty on a 18-3 tech fall at 165 before Jacen Petersen tacked on three points to bring ASU within five, 16-11. Creative coaching inserting Petersen into the order at 174 and moving Z. Valencia up was a gamble that ultimately paid off for the Sun Devils. Moving up a class from his usual place in the order, Zahid Valencia continued his undefeated freshman campaign, pinning Tyler McNutt at 4:25 at 184 lbs. to give the Sun Devils their first lead, 17-16. "We gambled and put Petersen at 174 and bumped up Zahid to 184 to try and win the dual. Just like going for it on fourth-and-10 with a minute to go in football or running a trick play. That was a huge gamble and it paid off." North Dakota State regained the advantage, 19-17, as Cordell Eaton posted a 5-2 decision at 197 vs. Sullivan Cauley, who wrestled heavyweight earlier in the day. Coming down to the final bout, Tanner Hall took care of business with a 4-1 decision, padded by the riding time point, to give the Sun Devils the 20-19 overall victory, capturing third place. In the semifinal vs. Oklahoma, Josh Shields scored the Sun Devils' first points of the day on a decision (157) before the Valencia's tallied back-to-back major decisions. Z. Valencia's 12-3 major decision brought the Sun Devils within two, 13-11, but the Sooners rallied with 12 straight points for the easy victory.

Virginia Tech claimed a Virginia Duals title HAMPTON, Va. -- A little more than a year after falling to Iowa State in the finals of last season's the Virginia Duals, the fifth-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling team is bringing the tournament championship back to Blacksburg as the Hokies rolled past No. 15 Oklahoma, 24-10, in the finals of the tournament 37th installment on Saturday evening. The Hokies (11-1, 1-0 ACC) topped North Dakota State, 22-15, in the semifinals earlier in the day that led to Tech's victory over the Sooners. Tech has won the Virginia Duals in three of the last four years. "It's always nice to win the Virginia Duals. We didn't win it last year so it's a much better feeling now than it was a year ago," said head coach Kevin Dresser. "Wrestling-wise we were very average today. Joey Dance at the bottom and Ty Walz at the top had great weekends but there were some other spots where we were up and down. We have some big ACC matches coming up next weekend so that's what week turn our focus to now." No. 5 Hokies 24, No. 15 Oklahoma 10 Senior Joey Dance was on his way to tech fall at 125 over Christian Moody but he wanted more. He picked up the pin at 5:49 that gave the Hokies an early cushion up 6-0. Redshirt junior Dennis Gustafson followed with a bloody 3-2 decision in two tiebreak periods that extended Tech's advantage to 9-0. After the Sooners took the bout at 141 pounds, redshirt sophomore Solomon Chishko, who had been fighting a stomach illness all weekend, picked up three match points with a 5-3 decision. Oklahoma would go on to claim the next two weight classes but the couldn't rack up bonus points. The lack of bonuses came back to bite Oklahoma as the heart of the Hokies' lineup took care of business the rest of the way. Redshirt junior Zach Epperly survived a scare at 174 but a takedown that also eliminated the riding time helped him defeat the Sooners' Matt Reed. Redshirt sophomore Zack Zavatsky, redshirt junior Jared Haught and redshirt senior Ty Walz all won their matches by decision that capped the title for the Hokies. Virginia Tech 22, North Dakota State 15 A 22-15 come-from-behind victory led by its upperweights helped propel the Virginia Tech wrestling team into the finals against North Dakota State earlier in the afternoon. Career win No. 100 for Dance turned out to be a critical victory for the Hokies. The Christiansburg product won a 5-3 decision in a top five matchup at 125 pounds against No. 4 Josh Rodriguez that were the only match points for the Hokies until the bout at 149. Chishko toughed out a 3-2 victory that cut the Hokies' deficit to three, 9-6 but the Bison extended their lead by picking up decisions in the next two matches that made it 15-6 heading into the heavyweights. Looking to score bonus points, Epperly delivered with a clutch technical fall, 18-3, with the final point coming from over two minutes of riding time. A 4-1 decision at 184 from Zavatsky set the stage for consecutive major decisions from redshirt junior Jared Haught and redshirt senior Ty Walz. Haught gave the Hokies its second lead of the match at 18-15 after his MD. The Hokies return to action on Friday, Jan. 20, when they face Pitt at 7 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum. CHAPEL HILL --- James Szymanski's late takedown of No. 15 Markus Simmons in the final bout of the night lifted the North Carolina wrestling team to a 20-17 win over visiting Iowa State Saturday evening at Carmichael Arena. With the dual tied at 17 and the match tied at 3, Szymanski scored with less than 15 seconds left to give the Tar Heels a thrilling win. Carolina (5-3) built a 17-5 lead thanks to five straight wins starting with No. 5 Joey Ward at 141. Ward dominated John Meeks 5-1 to get UNC on the board after No. 12 Earl Hall opened the dual with a first-period tech fall at 133. Troy Heilmann then gave the Tar Heels their first lead of the night with a 9-6 decision at 149 before Joey Moon's wire-to-wire win at 157. Moon had a pair of takedowns and a pair of reversals against Colston DiBlasi to put Carolina ahead 9-5. Jack Clark delivered his fourth tech fall of the season at 165, using three takedowns and a trio of near falls to beat Logan Breitenbach 17-2. At 174, No. 7 Ethan Ramos's third-period takedown secured a top-10 victory over No. 9 Lelund Weathersppon, putting Carolina up 17-5 with just four matches remaining. Iowa State (1-6) wasn't done, however, as the Cyclones went on a run to suddenly even the dual. WASHINGTON -- No. 8 Lehigh wrapped-up a 2-0 road weekend against EIWA opponents with a convincing 31-3 win over American Saturday night at Bender Arena. The Mountain Hawks claimed nine of ten bouts against the Eagles, highlighted by back-to-back technical falls that kicked off the second half of the dual. With the weekend sweep, Lehigh has now won four consecutive duals to improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 against EIWA opponents. "A lot better action (compared to last night)," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "We were looking to score points the whole time. We had some gutty performances like Ben (Haas) winning his match in the third period despite falling behind 4-0 early. Everybody wrestled much better tonight. We looked sharper." The featured bout of the dual was the first bout as eighth-ranked junior Darian Cruz met No. 16 Josh Terao at 125. Cruz led 4-0 after one period but was turned for four points early in the second period before scoring a reversal to go up 6-4. Cruz added to his lead with a third period takedown and a 3:27 riding time advantage gave him a 9-5 decision. The lone win for American (3-4, 0-3 EIWA) came at 133 but the Mountain Hawks were mere seconds away from a potential shutout. After a scoreless first period, freshman Joe Lobeck turned AU senior Esteban Gomez-Rivera for two points while riding out the second period. Gomez-Rivera stormed back in the third, with a penalty point for stalling plus three takedowns, the last of which came in the final seconds to earn a 7-6 decision, tying the dual at 3-3. Lehigh took control from there, winning the final eight bouts with the next three weights not decided until the third period. At 141, senior Randy Cruz got back on the winning track, using takedowns in the first and third periods plus riding time to defeat Jack Mutchnik 6-0. Sophomore Cortlandt Schuyler made his season dual debut as senior Laike Gardner was given the night off at 149. Schuyler broke open a scoreless match with an escape and takedown in the second period, and added two more takedowns in the third to defeat Michael Sprague 9-5. Freshman Jordan Kutler fell just short of a major decision, using takedowns in each of the first two periods plus a 3:20 riding time advantage to defeat Cole Moseley 7-0, giving the Mountain Hawks a 12-3 lead at intermission. After settling for four decisions in the first half of the dual, junior Drew Longo helped the Mountain Hawks create some separation, opening the second half of the dual with a 21-5 technical fall over Michael Eckhart at 165. Longo led 4-1 after one before putting up 13 second-period points to lead 17-5 after five minutes. A four-point near fall early in the third period ended the match in 5:13. Sophomore Ryan Preisch also contributed a technical fall in his return to action at 174. He used a takedown, a two point near fall and a pair of three point near falls to lead Joe Salvi 14-0 after one. Preisch granted Salvi an escape to open the second then took him down to close out the 16-1 technical fall in 3:24. The win gave Lehigh a comfortable 22-3 lead with three bouts remaining. "We needed that momentum," Santoro said. "We were so close. We were going for majors and not getting them. Those are things we have to work on for the end of the year, but the effort was there. It was better. We were trying to attack and trying to score points instead of hanging out and trying to coast." At 184, freshman Kyle Gentile built an early lead with a first period takedown and then cemented his win with a third period score in a 5-3 decision over Jason Grimes. Senior Ben Haas used a strong ride on top and a solid third period to rally for a 9-5 decision over Jeric Kasunic at 197. Kasunic scored an early takedown and two point near fall but Haas responded with reversals in the first and second periods to tie the match at 4-4.Haas took a 6-4 lead, winning a scramble for a third period takedown and added a two point near fall in the final seconds plus riding time to earn the victory. The final bout of the dual saw Santoro rest senior Doug Vollaro and give freshman Christian Colucci his first dual meet appearance. Colucci scored takedowns in the first and third periods to hold off Brett Dempsey by a 6-4 score. Lehigh finished with a commanding 23-4 edge in takedowns, with three of American's takedowns coming in the 133 pound bout. The Mountain Hawks improved to 7-0 all-time versus the Eagles. NEW YORK -- A fall by Paul Fox and an overtime win by Peter Galli propelled No. 15 Stanford to a 22-12 come-from-behind win over No. 20 Princeton, Saturday, at the New York Athletic Club. After dropping the first three matches, Stanford won six of the final seven bouts to improve to 4-1 on the season. The Tigers drop to 5-6. Trailing 12-6, Fox, a redshirt sophomore, pinned Mike D'Angelo in 4:16 at 157 pounds to knot up the score 12-12. It was the third fall of the year for Fox, who moves to 17-10 overall. A 12-2 major decision by 18th-ranked Keaton Subjeck over freshman Riley DeMoss at 165 pounds gave the Cardinal its first dual lead at 16-12. Subjeck posted four takedowns, two stalling points, an escape and three-plus minutes of riding time in the win. The redshirt junior is now 13-4 overall and 4-0 in duals this season. Galli sealed the win for Stanford by knocking off No. 16 Jon Schleifer, 5-3, in sudden victory. Leading 1-0 after two, Schleifer tied it up in the third with an escape. Galli then scored a takedown before a scramble resulted in a reversal for Schleifer, tying the match 3-3 at the end of regulation. Galli finished off Schleifer in overtime, being awarded a takedown after another good scramble.Galli is now 2-0 at 174 pounds this season and 16-4 overall. Redshirt junior Connor Schram, ranked 14th at 133 pounds, scored the first points of the dual for Stanford. He recorded a 3-2 decision over Pat D'Arcy to cut Princeton's dual lead to 9-3. Schram, who hasn't competed since Dec. .18, scored a first period takedown and led 2-1 after the opening frame. D'Arcy earned an escape to start the second, but Schram's escape at the beginning of the third earned him the win. Schram moves to 9-2 overall on the season and 3-1 in duals. In a match-up of top 5 opponents, Stanford's No. 3 Joey McKenna dominated No. 4 Matthew Kolodzik with a 4-0 decision. McKenna, who is now 19-1 on the season, scored a takedown in the first 22 seconds of the dual and finished the opening period with 2:42 of riding time. He notched an escape in the second and then rode out Kolodzik in the third to finish with 4:25 riding time. Redshirt senior Zach Nevills capped off the scoring for the Cardinal shutting out Ian Baker, 3-0, at 184 pounds. There was no score after the first and Baker chose down to start the second. Nevils recorded a reversal in the second and then chose top to start the third. Nevills rode out Baker for his first win of the season. Princeton jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the dual as No. 20 Josh Marchok fell in a 5-3 decision to 12th-ranked Brett Harner at 197 pounds. At heavyweight, No. 10 Nathan Butler was upset 3-1 in overtime by Princeton's Ray O'Donnell. Butler had O'Donnell on the edge with less than 20 seconds remaining in the third in what would have been called a takedown, but the referee called it out of bounds. The Tigers added to their lead at 125 pounds as Ty Agaisse held off No. 14 Gabriel Townsell, 3-2. Agaisse's takedown late in the first period proved to be the difference. Trailing 3-0 after two, Townsell earned the escape to start the third and was awarded a stalling point, but was unable to score a takedown in the final period. Princeton took a 12-6 lead in the dual after 17th-ranked Jordan Laster tallied a 9-2 decision over Tommy Pawelski at 149 pounds. Pawelski drops to 3-4 on the season. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) and Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) each won all three of their matches as the Rider University wrestling team (6-0, 2-0 EWL) went 3-0 at the University of Pittsburgh Duals on Saturday. The Broncs began the day with a 39-4 win over Columbia, before defeating West Virginia, 28-6. Rider wrapped up the three-match sweep with a 32-9 win over Brown. "We wrestled with energy and very aggressive today" said Rider Head Coach Gary Taylor while talking about the day full of dual meets. The Broncs kicked the day off with a very strong start, winning the first nine matches they wrestled against Columbia wrestlers to open up a 39-0 lead. An early win by Wert at 125 kicked the Rider wrestlers off in the right direction. "Wert wrestled well having just come off knee surgery" said Taylor. The Broncs would continue on with the wind at their back, taking the first eight matches of their second dual meet against West Virginia University. The Broncs would have the dual completely locked up by 197 pounds, leading 28-0. The final dual meet of the day would see more success for Rider, kicking off the match against Brown on yet another run, this time winning the first three matches to take a 15-0 lead. They would never look back, going on to take the dual 32-9. "Cefolo and Walsh beat two top notch kids from WVU," said Taylor. B.J. responded extremely well from the Midlands tournament and returned to his old form. Fidelibus continues to improve as a true freshman. Ryan Wolfe also wrestled well, with his only loss coming to the #6 ranked kid in the country 5-4." ITHACA, N.Y. – In a dual between two top-10 teams, No. 9 Mizzou Wrestling (7-2, 4-0 MAC) dominated No. 7 Cornell (5-2, 0-0 EIWA) in a 25-11 win on Saturday in Ithaca, N.Y. Mizzou won the first seven bouts of the day and did not yield a takedown until the eighth match of the day. Redshirt junior 125-pounder Barlow McGhee (Rock Island, Ill.) started the day for the Tigers, registering a 7-2 win over Noah Baughman. The match was close in the final period, but McGhee executed a takedown and got back points in the final minute to open the score and secure the win. Redshirt sophomore 133-pounder John Erneste (Kansas City, Mo.) followed, earning an 8-2 victory over Mark Grey. In the third bout of the day, redshirt junior 141-pounder Jaydin Eierman (Columbia, Mo.) posted the first Tiger bonus point win of the match, defeating Will Koll by way of a 15-4 major decision. Eierman led 9-2 heading into the third period and scored three more takedowns to earn the major decision. Next for Mizzou was redshirt senior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.), who posted the second straight major decision in a row, defeating Jonathan Furnas, 12-4. After a two match absence, redshirt junior Joey Lavallee (Reno, Nev.) returned to the starting lineup against the Big Red, earning a 5-3 win over Taylor Simaz. The dual meet will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network and streamed live on BTN2Go. The Cornhuskers cruised to a 28-11 victory over Wisconsin on Friday night in Lincoln. The Wolverines are coming off a decisive 25-16 victory over Maryland on Friday night. Below are five matchups to watch in the dual meet. 133: No. 3 Eric Montoya (Nebraska) vs. No. 8 Stevan Micic (Michigan) Montoya, a returning All-American, appears to be on track to contend for a national title this season. He won a Midlands title in December, beating Zane Richards of Illinois in the finals. On Friday he earned a 10-1 major decision over Wisconsin's Eli Stickley to improve his season record to 18-0. Micic, a three-time Indiana state champion, was one of the nation's top 20 recruits coming out of high school. He spent his first year at Northwestern before transferring to Michigan. The eighth-ranked Micic notched an 11-4 win over Billy Rappo on Friday, and comes into the match with a record of 11-3 and No. 8 ranking. 141: No. 11 Colton McCrystal (Nebraska) vs. Sal Profaci (Michigan) McCrystal has wrestled well against some of the nation's best this season. His most notable win came over returning NCAA runner-up Bryce Meredith of Wyoming in a dual meet on Nov. 20. He lost close matches to No. 4 Matthew Kolodzik of Princeton and No. 5 Joey Ward of UNC. After failing to place at the Midlands, McCrystal bounced back last weekend to beat Penn State's Jimmy Gulibon convincingly. Profaci comes in with a record of 8-6, but virtually all of his losses have come against ranked wrestlers. He has picked up some quality wins this season, including one over returning NCAA qualifier Mike Longo of Oklahoma. Profaci is coming off an 8-4 victory over Maryland's Jhared Simmons on Friday night. 157: No. 3 Tyler Berger (Nebraska) vs. No. 10 Brian Murphy (Michigan) This is one of the premier matchups in this dual meet. Both wrestlers reached the round of 12 last season. Murphy was an All-American in 2015, but injuries have slowed him about the last couple season, and his results have been mixed. Murphy is coming off a win against Maryland on Friday night, but has dropped four of his last five matches. Berger started this season by winning his first 20 matches. His first loss came to Iowa's Michael Kemerer in the finals of the Midlands Championships in tiebreaker. Last weekend he fell to top-ranked Jason Nolf of Penn State 15-7, but come back to earn a major decision over Wisconsin's Jarod Donar on Friday night. 165: Dustin Williams (Nebraska) vs. No. 2 Logan Massa (Michigan) Massa has been one of the nation's top freshmen this season. He ascended to No. 2 in the rankings after claiming a title at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, which included a victory in the finals over Wisconsin's Isaac Jordan, a returning NCAA runner-up and three-time All-American. Since Las Vegas, Massa has been nothing but dominant, picking up two wins by technical fall and another by major decision. Williams, a three-time Kansas state champion, has an up-and-down season. He was a runner-up at the Harold Nichols Open, but failed to place at the Midlands Championships where he went 2-2. It's a tough weekend of competition for Williams. On Friday, he wrestled third-ranked Isaac Jordan and lost 4-1. Now he will face the second-ranked Massa. 174: Micah Barnes (Nebraska) vs. No. 8 Myles Amine (Michigan) Myles Amine is one of several Amines who have wrestled for the Wolverines. His father Mike was an NCAA finalist and four-year letterwinner at Michigan (1986-89) and his uncle Sam also wrestled at Michigan (1988-90). In addition, his brother Malik and cousin Jordan are currently on the Michigan wrestling team. After redshirting last season, Amine has stepped into Michigan's lineup and made an immediate impact, winning 16 of 18 matches. He placed third at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and has climbed to No. 8 in the rankings. Barnes qualified for the NCAAs last season where he went 2-2. He has taken some expected losses this season, but still has a solid record of 15-9. In his last outing he hammered No. 20 Ryan Christensen of Wisconsin 8-1, so he will be riding some momentum into his match against Amine.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Powered behind a Jacob Morrissey upset and a Christian Brunner major decision, Purdue defeated Indiana 19-12 in Mackey Mayhem on Friday. Tyler Kral put an exclamation point on the Boilermakers' seventh straight win over their in-state rival by closing out the dual with a win in sudden victory. "This means a lot, especially it being my senior year and doing a neat event in Mackey Arena," Kral said. "My match was huge to me because my family was here. Getting the `W' at the end really put a stamp on the team score and helped Purdue get a point towards the Governor's Cup." Purdue lifted its record to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten Conference duals while taking a 3.5-2.5 lead in the Governor's Cup. The Hoosiers moved to 7-4 and 0-2 in the Big Ten. "I loved the atmosphere we had for Mackey Mayhem, I thought it was great," Purdue head wrestling coach Tony Ersland said. "Our guys soaked it up. No doubt in my mind we'd love to be back in here and keep building the crowds. It was an awesome event tonight." The dual was tied 9-9 heading into the 174 pound match. Indiana was building momentum after stringing together three straight wins and had 19th-ranked Devin Skatzka on deck. Morrissey excited the Mackey Arena crowd by exploding for seven points in the second period, nearly pinning Skatzka, on his way to a 10-4 upset. "Going into every match I know that if I keep wrestling hard and keep the pace up, it'll be in my favor," Morrissey said. "I know I work hard and I know that when I take someone into deep water like that, I can win, I know I'm never out of the match. The guy might look better on paper, but you go out to win." The 174-pounder took down a ranked opponent for the second time this season and moved to 9-6. "All the duals are important, but to me, this one was more fun from the atmosphere and crowd turnout," Morrissey said. Brunner provided the only bonus points of the dual, putting on a show in the third period for a 13-3 major decision over Jake Hinz at 197 pounds. The major decision was the fifth of the season for Brunner as he improved to 16-10 and gave Purdue a 16-12 lead heading into the final bout. Kral scored the winning takedown with seven seconds on the clock to defeat Fletcher Miller 3-1 in sudden victory. Each heavyweight had scored an escape for a 1-1 tie and forcing the winner-take-all 60-second session. "I didn't get caught up in the moment, I was excited," Kral said. "I looked over and saw my family and saw the guys jump out of their chairs. I was awestruck. I've been in a situation like this wrestling at state in high school. I love it, the atmosphere was great." The redshirt senior who hails from Crown Point reached the 20-win mark for the first time in his career. "Twenty wins is cool, but tonight it was about getting back to my style of wrestling," Kral said. "After the minor setback at Northwestern, I wanted to work hard all this week." The Boilermakers jumped out to a 9-0 lead thanks to decisions from Ben Thornton, Luke Welch and Kyle Ayersman. Riding time was the difference for both Thornton and Ayersman. OREM, Utah -- Tanner Orndorff and Dustin Dennison pulled out a pair of late crucial matches en route to leading Utah Valley University wrestling to an 18-15 victory over Big 12 Conference foe Air Force on Friday evening at Lockhart Arena. The Wolverines improve to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 Conference action on the season with the victory, while the Academy drops to 4-2 and 0-1 in league duals. "It was an exciting match and it's always good to win. The guys are headed in the right direction and definitely getting better," head coach Greg Williams said. "I knew that this was going to be a fun dual meet with a number of close matches. The crowd really made a difference for us in this one." With AFA holding to a 15-12 lead after eight matches, Orndorff managed to pull out a big 6-1 decision over Air Force senior Parker Hines to tie the team score at 15-15. After a scoreless opening period, the Wolverine redshirt freshman made his move with an escape followed by a takedown to take a 3-0 lead. Orndorff then followed that up with third-period takedown and an additional riding time point over his Air Force counterpart, who has been ranked as high 13th in the nation by FloWrestling this season, to record the win. The dual meet then came down to the heavyweight match, and UVU's Dennison was up for the challenge. Holding to a 2-1 lead after two periods of action, the Wolverine junior put the match away with a pivotal reversal followed to a takedown to seal a 6-3 decision and an 18-15 win for the Wolverines. The contest not only marked UVU's first Big 12 Conference victory of the season, but also its first in program history after going 0-4 in its inaugural season of competition in the renowned league last year. "Wins are definitely going to be hard to come by in the Big 12, so we better toughen up and continue to find ways to win," Williams added. In the opening bout of the contest, sophomore 125-pounder Mitch Brown got the Wolverines off to a solid start with an 8-4 come-from-behind victory over the 2016 NCAA qualifier Drew Romero. With AFA's Romero holding to a 4-2 lead in the second period, Brown scored a takedown to tie the match at 4-4. The Wolverine redshirt sophomore and former Air Force product then followed that up with a go-ahead escape, another takedown and an additional riding time point to give the Wolverines an early 3-0 lead on the scoreboard. Air Force's Dylan Hyder then gave the Falcons their first lead of the evening with a first-period fall over Jarod Maynes at 133 pounds. UVU senior Trevor Willson quickly responded with a 4-2 overtime win over John Twomey at 141 pounds to tie the team score at 6-6. With Willson and Twomey all deadlocked at 2-2 at the end of regulation, Willson managed to score the decisive takedown just 7-seconds into the opening sudden-victory period to pull out the contest. Utah Valley 149-pounder Grant LaMont then followed that up solid 6-0 decision over AFA senior Jerry McGinty to give the Wolverines a 9-6 lead, but Air Force's Dane Robbins immediately answered with a 4-1 decision of his own over Raider Lofthouse at 157 pounds to tie the team score at 9-all. Alex Lopouchanski then followed that up with another win for the Falcons to give his squad a brief 12-9 advantage thanks to an 8-2 decision over UVU freshman Koy Wilkinson at 165 pounds. The Wolverines didn't waste any time answering the score, however, thanks to a 7-3 decision victory from 174-pounder Kimball Bastian to even the team score at 12-12. With Bastian holding to a late 5-3 lead, the Wolverine redshirt freshman managed to turn a Michael Billingsley shot into a last-second takedown of his own to seal the 7-3 win. In a tightly contested 184-pound bout, Air Force's Zen Ikehara managed to secure a third-period reversal en route to winning a 2-1 decision victory over Will Sumner to give the Falcons a 15-12 lead with just two matches remaining. That's when Orndorff and Dennison teamed up to pull out back-to-back victories en route to leading UVU to the win. As a team, the Wolverines managed to win six of the 10 bouts on the evening. GREELEY, Colo. -- The Oregon State wrestling team snapped a three-match losing streak on Friday night with a convincing 31-15 victory at Northern Colorado. Back-to-back pins by junior Jack Hathaway (141) and senior Joey Delgado (149) enabled the Beavers (2-3) to pull away from UNC (0-5) for their first victory since a season-opening 22-20 triumph over Duke back on Nov. 12. Junior heavyweight Cody Crawford concluded the match with OSU's third fall. The Beavers also got a major decision by senior Joey Palmer (133) and decisions from junior Abraham Rodriguez (157), redshirt freshman Weston Dobler (174) and sophomore Corey Griego (197) to hand the Bears their fifth consecutive loss. The 149-pound match was pivotal. Delgado trailed 4-2 and opponent Ben Polkowske had 1:37 in riding time with less than 20 seconds remaining when Delgado got a reversal and a pin at 6:52, resulting in a decisive nine-point turnaround. LARAMIE, Wyo. -- South Dakota State swept the upper weights, including winning two matches by fall, as the 20th-ranked Jackrabbits remained undefeated in Big 12 Conference duals this season with a 33-11 road win at Wyoming Friday night. The Jackrabbits improved to 7-2 overall and 3-0 against Big 12 foes. Wyoming dropped to 1-5 overall and 1-1 against league opponents. With the dual starting at 174 pounds, David Kocer jump-started the Jackrabbits' dominating performance with a 22-3 technical fall over Chaz Polson. The SDSU lead grew to 17-0 through three matches with back-to-back pins by Martin Mueller and eighth-ranked Nate Rotert. Mueller trailed most of his 184-pound match against Kyle Pope, including 10-6 in the final minute, before putting Pope on his back with five seconds remaining. Rotert, meanwhile, needed only 1 minute and 51 seconds to stick Nate Shaw. Jackrabbit heavyweight Alex Macki added to the sweep of the upper weights with a 5-3 overtime decision over Brandon Tribble. EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern completed an incredible comeback to defeat Michigan State Friday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena, 23-21. The Wildcats needed bonus points in each of the final three matches of the night to guarantee at least a tie with the Spartans. With the 'Cats down 21-10, Mitch Sliga, Jacob Berkowitz and Conan Jennings were up to the challenge. They got the points they needed and then some. Sliga kicked things off with an 11-2 major decision over Wesley Maskill at 184 lbs. to cut the deficit to 21-14. Berkowitz then won by the same margin at 197 over Matt Okaiye to make it just a three-point match. It was the team-leading 18th win for Berkowitz, as he continues to climb in the national polls, reaching as high as 15th this week. He has won seven of his last nine overall. Heavyweight Conan Jennings finished things off with a dominant 15-0 tech fall of Jacob Cooper to give Northwestern its winning 23-21 margin. The win gave head coach Matt Storniolo his first Big Ten victory, and the team its first win in the conference since Feb. 23, 2015, a 26-18 win over Maryland. The Wildcats improved to 6-3 (1-2) on the season. Jason Ipsarides got the match started right for the Wildcats with a win by fall at 133 lbs. over Austin Eicher to make the score 6-3. ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team got the weekend started in dominating fashion, defeating the Adrian College Bulldogs 48-6 Friday night, Jan. 13, at Merillat Sport and Fitness Center in Adrian. The Eagles (5-2, 1-1 MAC) won all six bouts that took place by bonus points, that included one pin, four technical falls, and a major decision. The other four weight classes were forfeited, including Adrian (0-14) yielding 125 lbs., 174 lbs., and 184 lbs., while EMU gave up 149 lbs. to give the Bulldogs their only points. The dual began at 133 lbs. following the first forfeit, where redshirt freshman Sa'Derian Perry (Lakeland, Fla.-Lake Gibson) opened the evening with his fifth pin of the season, and fourth in dual action, this one coming in 2:09. The first-year starter is now 4-1 in duals with all four wins coming via fall. Redshirt sophomore Armando Torres (Lorain, Ohio-Elyria) made his 2016-17 dual debut wrestling up a class at 141 lbs. Eastern registered its second technical fall at 165 lbs. as redshirt senior Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson) cruised to an 18-1 tech fall in 3:56, his first of the year. After Adrian forfeited at 174 lbs. and 184 lbs., Eastern sat way out ahead with a 38-6 lead with two bouts remaining.
