CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Lance Runyon earned a statement pin over No. 11 Anthony Mantanona, Parker Keckeisen earned a 21-8 major decision in his dual debut and Brody Teske and Carter Isley stayed undefeated on the season to lead UNI to a 23-13 win over Oklahoma, Sunday at the McLeod Center. Teske started the dual with an impressive 12-3 win over Mason Naifeh. Naifeh recorded the first takedown, but Teske dominated the rest of the dual en route to the 12-3 win. Kyle Biscoglia picked up another impressive victory, earning a 3-1 win over No. 11 Anthony Madrigal with a third period escape and takedown. The Sooners responded with three-straight wins at 141, 149 and 157 to take a 10-7 lead. UNI needed a response and they got it from Patrick Schoenfelder. Schoenfelder earned a second period escape and takedown with a pair of impressive mat returns to earn a ride time point and earn a gutsy 4-1 win. It tied the match 10-10 and started off a 4-1 rally over the final five bouts. Runyon hit the mat at 174 against Mantanona and it was a thriller from the start. Mantanona earned a quick takedown followed by a Runyon reversal. Mantanona then earned an escape and another quick takedown to take a 5-2 lead. Runyon rallied, earned the escape before grabbing a takedown and a cradle which he turned into two back points to take a 6-5 lead. Mantanona kicked out of the cradle, but Runyon wasn't done, he adjusted and relocked the cradle before earning the pin to put UNI up 16-13. Keckeisen looked like a veteran in his first dual action, controlling the bout from the outset. He tallied nine takedowns to earn the 21-8 win. Oklahoma's Jake Woodley topped Tyrell Gordon 5-0 in the 197 bout to cut the lead to 20-13. Isley closed the dual with a 3-2 on the back of a first-period takedown. He is now 4-0 on the year. The win moves UNI to 3-1 in dual action and 3-0 in Big 12 duals. The Panthers return to the mat at the McLeod Center on Sunday, Jan. 24 to face Oklahoma State. SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Bernie Truax won matches by fall and technical fall and four other Mustangs earned a pair of wins as Cal Poly defeated Little Rock 33-8 and California Baptist 30-12 in dual meets Sunday inside Mott Athletics Center. Ranked No. 22 at 174 pounds by Trackwrestling, Truax improved to 5-1 on the year with a 20-4 technical fall over Triston Wills of Little Rock, then pinned Johann Steinforth of California Baptist in 6 minutes, 16 seconds. Also scoring two victories for the Mustangs were Antonio Lorenzo at 125 pounds, Lawrence Saenz at 141, Legend Lamer at 149 and Adam Kemp at 165. Lamer is a perfect 7-0 on the year. The redshirt freshman 149-pounder, ranked No. 25 this week, recorded a 15-2 major decision against Joseph Bianchi of Little Rock, followed by a 4-2 decision versus AJ Raya of California Baptist. The two Fresno State transfers both earned their first wins as Mustangs. Saenz, ranked No. 33, notched a 10-2 major decision over Conner Ward of Little Rock, then pinned Chaz Hallmark of California Baptist 11 seconds into the second period at 141 pounds. At 165, Kemp breezed to a 14-4 major decision over Alexander Hernandez of Little Rock, then picked up a 6-2 decision against Josh Grant of California Baptist. Lorenzo picked up his first two wins of the season with a pair of decisions -- a 5-3 sudden-victory nod over Khyler Brewer of Little Rock and a fall in 1:48 against Antonio Saldate of California Baptist. MADISON, Wis. -- Returning to the UW Field House to open their shortened home season, No. 25 Wisconsin upended No. 18 Purdue to earn the team's first dual victory in Big Ten competition this season. The Badgers (1-2 B1G) and Boilermakers (1-2 B1G) swapped leads through the first seven matches, but sophomore Eric Barnett turned a stingy back-and-forth tied battle into a sudden pin at 125 pounds. Barnett earned the upset fall of Purdue's third-ranked Devin Schroder late in the second period at 4:29 and picked up six team points for his team. Redshirt freshman Kyle Burwick collected an 8-0 major decision in the very next bout over Purdue's Nate Cummings to cement a dominating 22-10 lead for the Badgers with only one match left, eventually claiming the team dual victory 22-14. Joining Barnett and Burwick in victory on the mat, redshirt sophomore Drew Scharenbrock put the Badgers on the scoreboard first in the opening match of the dual. Scharenbrock earned a 9-4 decision over Purdue's Alec White. At 174 pounds, Jared Krattiger upset No. 20 Emil Soehnlen for a narrow 3-2 decision victory, while at 184 pounds Chris Weiler picked up a 4-2 decision victory for the Badgers over Max Lyon. Heavyweight Trent Hillger also earned a 3-0 decision against Purdue's Jamarcus Grant. Notably, the Badgers saw gritty performances in some of the losses, as Wisconsin's wrestlers kept Purdue's scoring out of major decision and higher scoring totals. Both Garrett Model (157) and Josh Otto (165) fought hard in their matches to prevent the opposition from larger victories, both earning only losses by decision and keeping the team score close. Full results are below for the Badgers, including several extra matches that didn't count in the team dual scoring. These matches do count for each individual wrestler for the season. Five Badgers earned victories in the extra matches, led by Trey Escobar's pin of Purdue's Bjorn Schroder in 1:01 at 141 pounds and an impressive 12-0 major decision win by Patrick Spray at 165 pounds over Elijah Davis. BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Posting bonus points in five matches, No. 11/17 Stanford opened the season with a 29-13 Pac-12 win at CSU Bakersfield on Sunday. The Cardinal won seven of the 10 bouts in the dual and was 5-1 in extra matches wrestled on the afternoon. The dual began at 157 pounds, where fifth-year senior captain Requir van der Merwe set the tone with a 13-5 major decision over Brock Rogers. Moving up a weight class this season, van der Merwe looked good on offense, scoring three takedowns and had two near fall points in the win. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Eischens, also wrestling up a weight class from last season, added to the Cardinal lead with a dominating 15-0 technical fall in 5:02 over Braden Smelser at 165 pounds. He opened with a takedown and had three turns in the first two periods for a total of 10 near fall points. Redshirt sophomore Shane Griffith remained undefeated as a Stanford wrestler, posting a 15-5 major decision over Albert Urias at 174 pounds. Griffith, who wrestled at 165 pounds during his rookie campaign, registered two takedowns, two four-point near falls in the win and accumulated 2:03 of riding time in the win. After fifth-year senior Jared Hill came up short in a 4-0 decision to Dominic Ducharme at 184 pounds, true freshman Nick Stemmet made his collegiate debut at 197 pounds. Stemmet gave up the first takedown of the match, but quickly recovered and turned on his offense. The Yorkville, Illinois, native tallied five takedowns, a reversal and racked up 3:41 of riding time. At a 125 pounds, Jackson DiSario fell behind early, but was able to tie things up with Eddie Flores to force overtime. Trailing 6-0 after the first, the sophomore took advantage of Flores choosing neutral to start the second, cutting into the lead with a takedown. After choosing down to begin the third, DiSario added an escape, another takedown and finished with riding time to take things to sudden victory. There, DiSario finished things off with his third takedown of the day to capture the win. At 133 pounds, true freshman Jason Miranda made a statement with a fall in 6:01 in his collegiate debut over Chance Rich. Miranda led 8-0 after two periods, but Rich cut the score to 8-6 before Miranda scored another takedown and was able to put Rich on his back for the pin. Redshirt freshman Jaden Abas, ranked No. 15 at 149 pounds, closed out the dual with a 13-6 decision over Kalani Tonge. Abas recorded a pair of reversals and eight near fall points in the win. In order to provide additional opportunities for wrestlers to compete in a shortened season, extra matches were held prior to the start and at the conclusion of the dual. True freshman Peter Ming made his collegiate debut at heavyweight, posting a 9-2 decision over redshirt senior Jarrod Snyder of CSU Bakersfield. The Elk Grove native scored a takedown in the opening period and turned Snyder for four near fall points to lead 6-0 after the first. He tacked on another takedown in the second and an escape in the final period. Redshirt freshman Logan Ashton also made his collegiate debut in an extra match before the dual. The 133-pounder turned in a 5-4 decision over Alex Hernandez. Ashton scored a takedown in the opening period, but gave up a reversal to start the second. Tied 2-2, Ashton gave up two stalling points to Hernandez on bottom, but was able to secure a reversal of his own and finished with 1:25 in riding time to seal the victory. Following the dual, four more extra matches were wrestled. True freshman Charlie Darracott shut out Josh McMillon at 157 pounds with an 8-0 major decision. The Flowery Branch, Georgia, native scored two takedowns and an escape, was awarded two points for stalling called on McMillon and rounded out the scoring with a riding time point. Sophomore Dawson Sihavong followed up with a 15-0 technical fall in 4:44 against Jacob Peralta at 149 pounds. Leading 7-0 after one, Sihavong chose down to start the second. After a quick escape, he notched another takedown and was awarded a point for stalling on Peralta. A four-point turn ended it in the second period. Eischens made his second appearance of the day and secured a first-period fall (2:00) over Hunter LaRue at 174 pounds. Ming gave up a 16-0 technical fall to CSUB heavyweight in the final extra match. Up next, Stanford travels to San Luis Obispo for a pair of duals at Cal Poly and against California Baptist on Thursday, Jan. 28. CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- No. 13 Iowa State's (4-1, 1-0 Big 12) matchup with No. 18 Oklahoma (2-2, 1-1 Big 12) came down to the final bout to determine a winner. With the Sooners leading 16-15 heading into the final match, senior Gannon Gremmel came away with a 5-4 decision over Josh Heindselman in TB1, lifting Iowa State to its fourth win of the season. How it Happened In the 285-pound match, Gremmel took an early lead, securing a takedown in the first period. After an escape in the second period, Gremmel brought a 3-1 lead into the third period. Heindselman briefly took a 4-3 lead, but Gremmel got to his feet to send the match into overtime. After a scoreless sudden victory period, Gremmel earned an escape in TB1 and rode out Heindselman to secure a 5-4 decision and a dual win for the Cyclones. Senior Ian Parker and freshman Julien Broderson also tallied big wins on the day. In a rematch of the 2020 Big 12 finals, Parker toed the line with Oklahoma's Dom Demas. Trailing 3-2 in the third period, Parker locked in a takedown with :30 on the clock and rode Demas out for the 4-3 victroy. A 4-3 decision was also the result of Broderson's match with OU's Anthony Mantanona, advantage Broderson. The Davenport, Iowa, native scored a takedown in the first and led 2-1 early. With the match tied 3-3 late, Broderson's pace forced a second stall call on Mantanona, awarding Broderson one point, which was enough to knock off the top-10 Sooner. Sophomore David Carr remained perfect on the year, defeating Justin Thomas by 4-0 decision. Carr used a takedown, an escape and nearly three minutes of riding time to push past Thomas. Like Carr, sophomore Isaac Judge also imposed his will on top in his match with Jake Stiles. Judge was in complete control, racking up 3:08 of riding time in a 4-1 victory at 165 pounds. At 125 pounds, freshman Kysen Terukina got the nod for the Cyclones on Sunday. The Ewa Beach, Hawaii, native was tied 4-4 with Mason Naifeh with under a minute to go in the match. FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Bucknell wrestling team excelled during its round-robin tournament with Sacred Heart, which was held on Sunday at the William H. Pitt Center. The Bison won 16 of the 20 bouts contested against Pioneer wrestlers, taking five by fall, three by major decision and one by technical fall. Kurt Phipps (141), Nick Delp (157), No. 9 Zach Hartman (165) and Vincent Andreano (174) all went 2-0 while Mason McCready (197) won a team-best three bouts. Hartman's pin of Will Schmidt came in just 1:51. David Campbell (141), Matthew Kolonia (149), Thomas Spirk (157) and Sam Barnes (184) accounted for Bucknell's other victories by fall. Notably, Spirk's pin represented the first win of his collegiate career. Coming off his upset of then No. 11 Tony Madrigal of Oklahoma, Darren Miller (133) rose as high as 14th in the national rankings. He was an impressive victor over Kyle Randall, posting a 21-4 technical fall. Andreano and Phipps secured their 2-0 records by topping Bison teammates. Andreano and Frankie Guida, Jr. went to sudden victory tied at 1-1; Andreano ultimately scored a quick takedown to emerge victorious. Bucknell next travels to Army West Point for a 2 p.m. dual on Sunday, Jan. 31.

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. -- With victories in nine out of 10 weight classes, Hofstra picked up its first win of the season in dominating fashion with a 38-4 result over Long Island Sunday afternoon from the Pratt Recreation Center. The win puts Hofstra at 1-1 on the year, while the Sharks slip to 1-2. Redshirt freshman Ross McFarland started the afternoon with a 12-2 major decision victory over James Langan at 174 pounds, the first of four wins by major decision for the Pride. Senior Charles Small followed up McFarland's major decision win with one of his own, posting an 11-3 result over Dan Shafran. Junior Trey Rogers won his match at 197 pounds via technical fall with a score of 24-9 against TJ Franden, and redshirt junior Zachary Knighton-Ward tallied a 12-4 major decision win over Tim Nagosky at 285 pounds. Junior Dylan Ryder scored the only win by fall of the afternoon with a pin of Bryce Cockrell at 3:43 of the 125-pound bout. Ryder, who is ranked No. 31 in his weight class by The Open Mat, carried a 2-0 lead on Cockrell going into the second period and scored three back points before earning the pin with 17 seconds remaining before the buzzer sounded. Deven Matthews scored a major decision win for the Sharks with a 11-3 score over redshirt sophomore Matthew Templeton at 133 pounds, but the Pride responded with wins in the next four weight classes. At 141 pounds, redshirt senior Vinny Vespa secured an 8-3 decision, and graduate student Greg Gaxiola scored his first win as a Hofstra wrestler with a 16-4 major decision over Anthny Dushaj at 149 pounds. Junior Holden Heller scored a win by technical fall over Rhise Royster at 157 pounds, winning the match with a 17-2 score, and in the final match of the dual meet, redshirt senior Ricky Stamm handled Kenny Cooper en route to a 9-2 decision at 165 pounds. There were also three extra matches that counted only towards the record of the individual wrestler. Sophomore Reece Heller at 174 pounds scored a quick win by fall at 1:06, and junior Corey Langner at 184 pounds recorded a technical fall win by score of 17-2. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 11 Ohio State won six of 10 matches, including the final two at 197 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, to edge Rutgers 19-14 on Saturday inside the Covelli Center. The Buckeyes improved to 2-1 on the season with the Scarlet Knights are 0-2. Saturday's dual started at 125 pounds where Malik Heinselman, ranked No. 14 this week by InterMat and No. 16 in FloWrestling, earned a 10-4 decision over 22nd-ranked Nicholas Aguilar. Heinselman scored two first-period takedowns and another as time expired in the second period. He added a riding time bonus point and improved his record to 3-0 on the season. Rutgers took the next two matches, getting bonus point wins from top-10 ranted wrestlers at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively. Top-ranked Sammy Sasso swung the momentum back in Ohio State's favor when he won 11-5 over Michael Van Brill at 149 pounds. Sasso, now 3-0 on the year, scored on four takedowns and a reversal while also getting the riding time point. Rutgers' Robert Kanniard gave the Scarlet Knights an 11-6 lead in the dual at intermission when he earned a 7-5 sudden victory decision over Elijah Cleary at 157 pounds. Tate Orndorff, making his Covelli Center debut after transferring to Ohio State from Utah Valley, clinched the dual with a 4-2 decision at heavyweight over Christian Colucci. The Bulldogs started the morning with a 32-10 victory over Presbyterian and followed it up with a 27-18 victory over Bellarmine. The Bulldogs improve to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in SoCon action. The Citadel is off to its best conference start since opening the 2014-15 season winning two of the first three matches. After the final buzzer, the alternate official called a locked hands foul, awarding a point to BU and sending the match into overtime. After a wild scramble, Burke came out on the wrong side of the takedown. The Citadel entered the final three matches trailing 18-14. Kyle Kretzer erased that deficit with a 12-4 major decision victory. Kretzer used seven takedowns throughout the match to get the four big points. Ben Stemmet gave the Bulldogs the lead with a 7-2 victory at 197 pounds. Stemmet controlled the match on the mat and did not allow his opponent to get any momentum. Michael McAleavey wasted no time in ending his match as he only needed 39 seconds to secure the fall. He shot in right away and put his opponent on his back. Michigan wrestles its home dual meets at Cliff Keen Arena (Photo/Sam Janicki, SJanickiPhoto.com) ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Under a Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) decision made Saturday (Jan. 23), the University of Michigan Athletic Department will immediately pause athletic activities in all sports, including games, team and individual training sessions, until further notice and up to 14 days. While U-M has worked diligently on testing and reporting within state and Big Ten Conference guidelines, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is mandating a more aggressive strategy for this B.1.1.7 variant, which exceeds current program efforts designed around the standard form of the virus. The mandate follows positive test results for the SAR-CoV-2 B.1.1.7 variant virus infections from several individuals linked to the U-M Athletic Department through its diligent testing regiment. The B.1.1.7 variant is thought to be approximately 50 percent more transmissible than the standard form of the virus, leading to faster spread of the virus, potentially increased numbers of cases, and additional hospitalizations and deaths. Therefore, a pause of all athletic activities and a closure of all U-M athletic facilities are being taken to strengthen the public health intervention. Team members (student-athletes, coaches, and team staff) must immediately isolate/quarantine effective Jan. 23 until further notice and up to 14 days (Feb. 7). "Canceling competitions is never something we want to do, but with so many unknowns about this variant of COVID-19, we must do everything we can to minimize the spread among student-athletes, coaches, staff, and to the student-athletes at other schools," said Warde Manuel, the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics. University public health officials are working closely with the Washtenaw County Health Department and Michigan Department of Human Health Services on additional mitigation strategies to address the COVID-19 B.1.1.7 variant in the university community. The university will be carefully considering additional mitigation measures. There are many unknowns that remain under investigation by U-M, local and state public health officials. No determination has been made on how the pause may impact scheduled games beyond Feb. 7.

OREM, Utah. -- The Wyoming Wrestling squad crowned five outright champions and two co-champions Saturday afternoon at the UVU Round Robin Tournament. Every Cowboy that earned champion status posted an undefeated record on the day. "Overall I think we saw some improvement, but there are still little details we need to work on" Head Coach Mark Branch said "Chase Zollmann had a really strong day and I liked the fact that he's started to find his offense. Picking up a fall to end the day was big for him." The 133-pound weight class would be ruled by Wyoming as Jake Svihel and Job Greenwood ended up as co-champions at the weight. For Greenwood, it was hard fought day picking up two wins by three points or less including an overtime win, his highlight victory was a 13-5 major decision victory over Kainula Estrella (UVU). After seeing limited mat time to start the season, Svihel had a breakout performance going 3-0 capping off his performance with a fall (4:28) over Sammy Heywood (UVU). After going 3-0 a weekend ago at Air Force, Zollmann would pick up where he left off running his win streak to five matches on his way to winning the 141-pound weight class. Zollmann started the day with a hard fought 5-2 win over Julian Chlebove (ASU) before securing champion status with a pin (2:41) against Nicholas Rino (UVU). At 157 pounds Jacob Wright would claim the weight class with a 2-0 record on the day. He started the day by pinning Brigg Hoopes (UVU) in 2:44 and then wrapped up his day with a 9-3 victory over Danny Snedicker (UVU). Cole Moody also improved his winning streak to five matches on Saturday while bumping his overall season record to 8-1. Moody had a workman's like performance on his way to winning the 165-pound weight class, outscoring his two opponents 19-5 on the day After not competing last weekend, Tate Samuelson was back in action and back to winning going 2-0 on the day and winning the 184-pound weight class. Samuelson started his day with a 6-1 victory over Ashton Seely (UVU) and would then secure champion status in style by pinning Hunter Morse (UVU) in 5:00. The final champion of the day for the Cowboys was Stephen Buchanan at 197 pounds. It was a simple and effective day for Buchanan as he wrestled once and won via a 20-5 tech. fall over Jacob Armstrong which was enough to secure the title. Up next the Cowboys return home on Saturday Jan. 30 to host a dual against Big 12 foe Air Force at 5 p.m. The dual is set to be hosted in the Arena-Auditorium.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Campbell remained unbeaten in Southern Conference duals, sweeping Saturday's matches against Appalachian State and Gardner-Webb at the Pope Convocation Center. Campbell moved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in SoCon matchups after the day's action, while Appalachian State fell to 3-2 on the season and 3-1 in conference duals. Gardner-Webb dropped to 0-7 overall, including 0-4 in SoCon duals. The Camels opened the day with a come from behind 21-17 win over App State, then defeated Gardner-Webb 38-6. The Mountaineers also topped Gardner-Webb 28-6. Down 17-3 through six matches, Campbell claimed the final four bouts against Appalachian State, including back to back pins at 184 and 197 pounds, to claim a 21-17 win over the Mountaineers. Benjamin Barton put Campbell on the board at 157 with a 5-4 decision over Cody Bond, and two matchups later, Austin Murphy's 5-4 decision brought the Camels within 17-6. Seven Huskers finished undefeated on the day as the Nebraska wrestling team earned wins over Northwestern and Maryland Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sport Center. The Huskers (3-1, 3-1 Big Ten) defeated the Wildcats (1-2, 1-2 Big Ten), 26-10, followed by the Terrapins (0-5, 0-5 Big Ten), 36-0. Starting at 125 pounds, Liam Cronin earned a 15-5 major decision win over Northwestern's Matt Vinci to set the tone for the day. Against Maryland, Cronin earned his first pin as a Husker, defeating Zach Spence by fall in 2:19. Alex Thomsen (133 pounds) picked up his first win of the season, defeating Maryland's Jackson Cockrell in a 6-2 decision. Thomsen finished 1-1 on the day, falling to Northwestern's Chris Cannon by major decision in his first match. Chad Red Jr. (141 pounds) put himself back in the win column with victories over Northwestern's Colin Valdiviez and Maryland's Danny Bertoni. Red earned three takedowns, two reversals and two riding time points on his way to improving to 3-1 in varsity duals this season. He also wrestled in the extra matches, beating Northwestern's Frankie Tal-Shahar in a 3-2 decision. At 149 pounds, Brock Hardy earned a 4-0 win over Maryland's Hunter Baxter, scoring two takedowns to record his second win of the season. The freshman fell to Northwestern's Yahya Thomas by 4-1 decision in his first match of the day. With a 5-1 decision over Maryland's Michael Doetsch, Caleb Licking picked up his first win of the season and his second career dual win. The senior earned two back points, a takedown and a riding time point to take the match. In his first match against Northwestern, Licking took Maxx Mayfield to extra time, but ultimately fell 6-4 in sudden victory. Peyton Robb (165 pounds) earned his first wins of the season, starting with an 8-5 decision over Northwestern's David Ferrante. He went on to defeat Maryland's Jonathan Spadafora by 11-5 decision to finish undefeated in varsity duals on the day. He also wrestled Northwestern's Ankhaa Enkhmandakh in extra matches, winning by major decision. He recorded eight takedowns over two varsity duals. At 174 pounds, Mikey Labriola maintained his unblemished season record with two wins Saturday. He earned his first major decision victories of the season, defeating Northwestern's Troy Fisher, 19-7, and Maryland's Philip Spadafora, 14-5. Taylor Venz (184 pounds) also finished unbeaten against Saturday's opponents, including a win in the extra matches, to improve to 3-1 on the season. He started the day with a statement win over Northwestern's Jon Halvorsen, earning 16 unanswered points for a technical fall victory in 4:57. The senior went on to pin Northwestern's Jack Jessen in extra matches before taking down Maryland's Kyle Cochran, 4-2. Eric Schultz extended his regular season win streak to eight matches with a 3-2 win over Northwestern's Lucas Davison and a 16-7 major decision over Maryland's Jaron Smith. With two wins, Schultz has won 70 total matches as a Husker, including 37 duals. Closing out each dual at heavyweight was Christian Lance, who earned his first wins of the season. COLUMBIA, Mo. -- No. 6 Mizzou Wrestling (9-0, 3-0 MAC) remained perfect overall and in Mid-American Conference duals with a 46-0 shutout win over Ohio, followed by a 24-12 victory over Northern Illinois on Saturday inside the Hearnes Center. Mizzou's victory over Ohio marked its first shutout triumph of the season. The Tigers' 46-point margin of victory was their largest since a 48-0 win over SIU-Edwardsville two seasons ago (Dec. 9, 2018). The Binghamton University wrestling team continued to build strong momentum to start the season, taking down No. 22 Army 23-10 Saturday afternoon in West Point. Ignited by a comeback victory by freshman Micah Roes, and capped off with a major decision by Cory Day over No. 17 Ben Sullivan, the Bearcats return home with a 3-0 record and their best start since the 2011-12 season. "That team effort was incredible," head coach Kyle Borshoff said. "What those guys did out there, it's hard to do. I need to come up with more adjectives because the only one that comes to my mind is just how incredible that was. I am so proud of our guys. There were four matches listed as "toss ups" and we were able to win all of them. Those added with Day's upset, leads to the final score you see." How It Happened Roes kicked off the match, and went down 6-0 early in the first. A momentous second period brought him back to 6-4, but time was not on his side late. A late takedown and hard earned rideout brought the bout to overtime, where Roes went on to grab a takedown and a 10-8 decision. 133-pounder Anthony Sobotker took control early in his matchup with Army's Mark Montgomery, leading 8-1 after the first period. Montgomery fought back, but Sobotker pulled out a 10-5 decision, improving to 3-0 on the season. With two close matches thus far in 2021, No. 22 Zack Trampe made sure to put his matchup away early. A takedown and four back points in the first vaulted him to a 13-2 major decision. Army fought back, winning the next two matches, but Brevin Cassella was able to putt an end to the Black Knights' streak with a gutsy 3-2 decision. A late escape in the second and a strong third period on top carried him to his third straight win. In an important matchup at 174 pounds, Jacob Nolan found himself down 2-1 (effectively 3-1 with ride time) after two periods. Despite the deficit, Nolan took control in the third with two takedowns to come away with a 6-3 decision. No. 4 Lou DePrez controlled his matchup from the start, building a 7-1 lead. DePrez was working for a major decision but came up one point short, getting the 10-3 decision. In the final matchup, Cory Day went up against No. 17 Ben Sullivan. MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The West Virginia University wrestling team overcame a 15-13 deficit to defeat Cleveland State, 18-15, on Saturday afternoon, at Woodling Gymnasium, in Cleveland, Ohio. With two bouts remaining, WVU (4-2, 0-1) desperately needed a pair of decisions to claim the team victory over CSU (0-1). No. 1 Noah Adams, a redshirt junior out of Coal City, West Virginia, answered the call for the Mountaineers, as he grinded out an 8-2 decision over Ben Smith at 197 pounds for the one-point edge in team scoring. However, West Virginia was deducted a team point due to an unsportsmanlike conduct call on Adams for throwing his head gear. With the match knotted at 15-all, redshirt freshman Michael Wolfgram turned it up in the heavyweight bout to claim a 6-3 win over John Kelby, as WVU walked away with the 18-15 team victory. "Today made for a crazy, but exciting match," third-year coach Tim Flynn said. "We got a lot of valuable mat time, and it was huge for Michael to come through with a victory for the team win." Redshirt junior Killian Cardinale, ranked No. 25 nationally via The Open Mat, started things off for the Mountaineers with a 9-1 major decision over Jake Manley at 125 pounds. Cardinale posted a trio of takedowns to put WVU on the board first en route to his first bonus victory of the season. At 141 pounds, redshirt freshman Jeffrey Boyd got back into the win column with a 10-4 decision over Joseph Caprella. Boyd started on bottom to earn the escape, followed by a takedown for the 3-0 lead in the second period. Caprella eventually escaped, but Boyd tacked on another takedown, as well as a reversal, for the 7-3 advantage heading in the final frame. Caprella quickly escaped to cut his deficit to three, but Boyd tallied his third takedown of the match and added on the ride time point at the end of regulation for the 10-4 win, as WVU took a 7-3 lead in the contest. However, CSU fought back and won two consecutive matches at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively, for the 12-7 advantage midway through the dual. Freshman Peyton Hall, ranked No. 24 nationally by FloWrestling, cut the Mountaineers' deficit to two with an 8-2 decision over Riley Smucker at 165 pounds. Sophomore Scott Joll followed suit with a hard-fought, 12-11 win over Anthony Rice. With the bout tied at 8-8 heading into the final frame, Rice decided to start in the defensive position and earn the escape. Joll registered a takedown to secure the ride time point, but Rice used a reversal with one second remaining to force sudden victory. However, Joll was awarded the win following a stall call on Rice in overtime, as WVU regained the lead at 13-12. Cleveland State then scored an 8-6 decision in a tie breaker at 184 pounds for the 15-13 match lead. However, it was West Virginia that closed out the dual with a pair of decision wins for the overall team victory. Clarion (2-2, 2-1 MAC) overcame the Cougars in a close bout, outscoring them 21-15, and followed with a rollercoaster 30-9 win over the Golden Flashes. The Golden Eagles were looking to respond to an 0-2 start to the season, and it was quickly apparent they were ready to flip the script as they came out loaded for bear. Kyle Schickel, Kolby Ho and Greg Bulsak were the three Golden Eagles to win both of their bouts on Saturday afternoon, with that trio helping Clarion to a narrow win over the Cougars and a larger win over the Golden Flashes. Tate Ortz made his season debut with a split on the afternoon, including a key technical fall against Kent State's Ian Senz that turned the momentum in the Golden Eagles' favor, and Ty Bagoly got off the schneid with a first period fall over the Golden Flashes' Jacob Cover. Clarion and SIU-Edwardsville split their 10 bouts evenly at 5-5, though the Golden Eagles were the beneficiary of a forfeit at 133 pounds that ultimately proved a difference in the match. Schickel won the first bout on the mat in that contest, outlasting Saul Ervin for a 4-3 decision at 141 pounds. Trailing 3-2 heading into the final moments of the third period, Schickel dropped Ervin for two points and rode him out for the win. Koleno followed with a tight decision of his own, defeating Cardeionte Wilson in a 6-5 decision to put the Golden Eagles ahead 12-3. The teams traded decisions at the next two weights, with Ho defeating Chase Diehl at 165 pounds to make it 15-6, but SIU-Edwardsville was not done. They took decisions at 174 and 184 pounds to cut the lead to 15-12, but Greg Bulsak sucked the drama out of the gym with a second period pin of Austin Andres at 197 pounds, clinching the match. The bout against the Golden Flashes was shaped by a number of momentum swings, as Kent State opened on a major decision at 125 pounds before being docked a team point. They added another decision at 133 pounds and seemed to have control of the emotional tide, even after Schickel defeated Avry Mutschly at 141 pounds. With Kent State leading 10-3 heading into the 157-pound bout, Ortz provided the spark that lit the Golden Eagles' fire with a 16-1 technical fall over Ian Senz. Ortz racked up 10 points in the first period with a pair of four-point near falls, and got the final takedown necessary for the tech fall near the end of the second period. Ho built off that momentum with a major decision over Mason Karpinski, taking Karpinski down just before time expired to earn the bonus points. There was a large swing at 174 pounds when nationally-ranked Andrew McNally was injured in his bout against Clarion's Caleb Hetrick, with the contender hurt on a takedown attempt early in the first period and unable to continue. Wohlabaugh and Bulsak notched back-to-back decisions to clinch the team win, setting the stage for Bagoly's heavyweight win. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team picked up two wins in Southern Conference action in Davidson, N.C., today. The Mocs opened with a 36-3 win over VMI, followed by a 37-6 victory against the host Wildcats. UTC improved its record to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in league duals, dropping only two matches overall on the day. VMI dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in league duals, while Davidson moved to 1-2 overall and in SoCon action. MINNEAPOLIS -- The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team extended its winning streak to 15 duals with a 35-6 win at No. 15 Minnesota on Friday night at the Maturi Sports Pavilion. The margin of victory was the largest in the series since a 44-2 Hawkeye win in 1992. Wrestling insertIowa piled up 34 takedowns and won the first nine bouts, scoring bonus points in five of them, and finished the dual with a 115-45 edge in match points and a 34-7 advantage in takedowns. The Hawkeyes scored bonus points in the first three matches and added two more major decisions after the break. Minnesota didn't record a takedown until the eighth match of the night, and didn't get on the board until the final match of the dual. "Good lopsided win," said head coach Tom Brands. "A lot of good things. A lot of hustle. But there is also things where I know we can score more points and maybe be a little more efficient." COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- No. 4 Oklahoma State moved to 5-0 on the season with a 33-6 win over Air Force in front of an empty arena in the Cowboys' Big 12 conference opener. "Boo stands out to to me," Oklahoma State head coach John Smith said. "Travis WIttlake looked pretty good and our three upperweights did a good job at the end to close the dual out." Trevor Mastrogiovanni won the first bout of the day with a hard-fought 2-1 decision. The freshman secured his fifth victory of the season by riding out Cody Phippen the entirety of the third period. Air Force took a 6-3 lead after wins at 133 pounds and 141 pounds where Dusty Hone made his season dual debut for OSU. Late in the third period up 4-2, Hone got taken down and looked to take the lead back with a reversal, but his points were deducted after review ruled the reversal took place after time had expired. The ruling gave Lenny Petersen the 5-4 advantage with riding time. Boo Lewallen put a stop to the Falcons' momentum and returned the lead in favor of the Cowboys with a 22-3 technical fall over Dylan Martinez. The No. 4 ranked 149 pounder in the nation picked up his third technical fall of the season, which is tied for the team lead. Lewallen gave the Pokes an 8-6 lead and OSU never looked back winning the final seven matches of the dual. Jalin Harper picked up his third-consecutive win in a 3-1 decision following his solid performance in Little Rock last Sunday. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- No. 7 Illinois edged out No. 13 Purdue in an exciting 19-17 win on Friday night, improving to 4-0 on the season. The Illini and Boilermakers each won five bouts, but the Illini picked up several key victories along the way to edge the Boilermakers. Lucas Byrd, Dylan Duncan, and Luke Luffman all secured wins to stay undefeated on the season. "It was ugly at times but we found a way," said head coach Jim Heffernan. DJ Shannon was outstanding as was Luke Luffman clinching the win. Lucas Byrd and Dylan Duncan deserve some credit as well getting bonus points. Good team win." Justin Cardani battled with Devin Schroder but ultimately fell short in a 2-0 decision as the junior 125-pounder was unable to score on Purdue's top wrestler. Picking up three takedowns in the first period, Lucas Byrd took a 6-2 lead into the second. The Illini sophomore notched several more takedowns in a dominant second period and won by fall (6:40) to put the Illini up, 6-3 after the first two bouts. Byrd is now a perfect 4-0 on the season. Dylan Duncan was in control during the entire 141-pound bout, securing multiple takedowns en route to a 11-3 major decision victory over Purdue's Parker Filius. The senior picked up his second win of the season and is now 2-0 after missing last weekend's tri-meet due to injury. Mike Carr finished a big takedown as time expired in period one, taking a 4-1 lead into the second period. The senior 149-pounder earned an 8-2 decision to extend the Illini lead to 13-3 over Purdue. DJ Shannon and Emil Soehnlen were knotted at 0 following the first period, but Shannon would start the second on bottom and earn the quick escape to go up 1-0. Shannon secured riding time in the first minute of a thrilling third period in which the riding time was the deciding factor in a 2-1 decision for Shannon. Illinois went ahead 16-11 following the 174-pound bout. Trailing 2-0 heading into the second period, Zac Braunagel started the second on bottom and came out with a quick escape. Purdue's Max Lyon would take a 2-1 lead into another exciting third period where Braunagel would earn a takedown to knot the score, but an escape late in the period from Lyon would give him the edge in a 4-3 decision. Another low-scoring and exciting match, Matt Wroblewski lost by decision, 5-3. The match loss would give Purdue a 17-16 edge and their first lead of the night. In the decisive 285-pound bout, Luke Luffman picked up a big takedown at the end of the first period to go up 2-0 heading into the second. Luffman would stay in control for the remainder of the match, ultimately picking up a 4-0 decision and giving the Illini their fourth win of the season. DURHAM, N.C. -- No. 14 North Carolina earned its fourth-straight ACC-opening match win against Duke on Friday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Coleman Scott's team posted a 29-9 win to open up conference competition. North Carolina found itself down 3-0 after the 125-pound match that featured Wil Guida. The freshman battled tough after finding himself down 6-1 in the first period. Guida found a way to pull within two, 6-4, but was unable to register a takedown in the back half of the third period and fell by two. Carolina tied up the match at three when Timothy Decatur went back-and-forth in the 133-pound bout through the first two periods against Parker Decker. RALEIGH, N.C. -- Powered behind a pair of top-10 upsets, and four ranked wins overall, No. 4 @PackWrestle stormed past No. 12 Pitt 27-6 Friday night in Reynolds Coliseum. The Pack (4-0, 2-0 ACC) won eight of the 10 bouts overall against the Panthers (3-1, 1-1), including the final six bouts of the night. The 21st consecutive Pack dual win was highlighted by freshman Isaac Trumble stepping in at 197 pounds for the first time this season and scoring a 6-1 win over No. 5 Nino Bonaccorsi. At 165 pounds, Thomas Bullard came away with a 4-3 win over No. 7 Jake Wentzel. The dual started at 125 pounds, and with bonus points for the Pack. No. 5 Jakob Camacho scored all five takedowns in the bout, including three in the third period, and scored a 13-5 major decision to open the dual. Pitt's first win was a No. 4 Micky Phillippi 4-2 decision over No. 16 Jarrett Trombley. The Pack came right back with a top-15 win at 141 pounds, as No. 11 Tariq Wilson stayed undefeated with a 7-5 OT win over No. 14 Cole Matthews. Matthews got a takedown in the final seconds to tie the score, but after a scoreless first 60 seconds of OT, Wilson got a reversal for the decisive points. Pitt once again answered with a decision at 149 pounds, as Luke Kemerer scored the bout's lone takedown with 10 seconds left to down Ed Scott, 3-2. No. 2 Hayden Hidlay got more bonus points, as he notched three four-point near falls in the second period at 157 pounds for a 19-2 tech fall win. The Pack led at intermission 12-6. NC State came right out and scored a top-10 win at 165 pounds. No. 17 Thomas Bullard used a second period takedown and third period reversal to score a 4-3 win over No. 7 Jake Wentzel. The Pack racked up a third straight win, as No. 12 Daniel Bullard used 3:08 of RT in a dominating 6-0 decision to up the Pack lead to 18-6. No. 4 Trent Hidlay made his Reynolds season debut and was dominate with a ranked win with all four takedowns in the bout and 2:29 of RT in an 11-4 decision over No. 16 Gregg Harvey. Making his debut in the lineup, freshman Isaac Trumble came out and scored a top-5 win, taking out No. 5 Nino Bonaccorsi 6-1. After a scoreless first, Trumble started the second on top and scored a four-point near fall as time expired. He then added an escape and 2:00 of RT came away with the upset win. The Pack closed the dual with its sixth straight win, as No. 18 Deonte Wilson scored a 6-1 win over previously undefeated Jake Slinger at heavyweight. BLACKSBURG -- In its ACC opener, Virginia Tech wrestling made it nine straight against Virginia Friday night with a 19-15 win in Cassell Coliseum. The eighth-ranked Hokies (5-0, 1-0 ACC) rode the momentum off two early bonus-point wins and never relinquished the lead for their 17th win out of the last 18 meetings with the Cavaliers (1-2, 0-2 ACC). Each team won five matches, but Tech's three bonus-point victories proved to be the difference. MATCH HIGHLIGHTS Kicking the dual off with a bang, No. 10 Sam Latona pulled out a technical fall over Sam Book in the last minute of the match. Latona led 7-3 with 45 seconds left when he secured a takedown and turned Book for two four-point near falls before the horn sounded. With riding time, the redshirt freshman opened the dual with an 18-3 tech. In the marquee matchup of the night, No. 8 Korbin Myers picked up a top-15 win over No. 12 Louie Hayes. The graduate student looked dominant in a 12-1 major decision, his first bonus-point win of the season, and racked up 3:42 in riding time. Also staying undefeated on the season was sophomore Bryce Andonian, who shut out his opponent Denton Spencer for an 8-0 major decision. Andonian, the No. 12 149-pounder in the country, was on top for over half the match, securing 4:15 in riding time. The Kirtland, Ohio product is now 22-6 in his career and 12-3 in dual matches. No. 1 Mekhi Lewis beat No. 15 Jake Keating in a top-15 showdown that saw Lewis increase his collegiate winning streak to 24 straight matches. Lewis' last loss came on Dec. 1, 2018 and he has yet to be taken down during that span. Second-ranked Hunter Bolen secured his fourth win of the season with a 10-4 decision over Michael Battista. The 2020 ACC Champion held on for 2:23 of riding time to extend Tech's lead to 19-9.
