WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Ohio State split a pair of matches at the tri-meet in West Lafayette, Ind., on Sunday afternoon. The Buckeyes lost 33-14 to No. 1 Iowa and then rebounded to beat host Purdue 23-12. Ohio State is now 5-2 on the season. Sammy Sasso and Ethan Smith were the stars of the day for the Buckeyes as they both went 2-0. Sasso pinned No. 5 Max Murin of Iowa to start the day and then thoroughly dominated Trey Kruse of Purdue in a 22-7 tech fall. Smith picked up his own tech fall of Iowa's Joe Kelly 18-3, and then claimed a major decision over Gerrit Nijenhuis of Purdue 15-5. Dylan D'Emilio also went 2-0 on the day. He started his afternoon by winning an extra match against Iowa, beating Carter Happel 3-1. He then wrestled in the 141-pound varsity match against Purdue and beat No. 28 Parker Filius by major decision 12-4. Elijah Cleary held on late for a solid 4-3 victory over Iowa's Bretli Reyna. Kaleb Romero battled No. 1 Michael Kemerer but dropped a tough 3-1 decision. Rocky Jordan also wrestled well against No. 8 Nelson Brands but fell in close match 3-0. Against Purdue, No. 21 Jordan Decatur picked up a win in the 133-pound match against Jacob Rundell, beating him 6-5. The wins by D'Emilio, Sasso and Smith pushed the Buckeye lead to 16-6 and then No. 17 Rocky Jordan defeated No. 18 Max Lyon 7-2 to make it 19-9 Buckeyes. Tate Orndorff then put a cap on the day with a very nice 10-1 major decision over Jared Florell, sealing the 23-12 win. The Buckeyes dominated the extra matches with Purdue, winning all six bouts. Brady and Dylan Koontz each claimed wins and so did J.D. Stickley, Bryce Hepner, Isaac Wilcox and Zach Steiner. Ohio State will remain on the road this week as it is scheduled to take on rival Michigan this Friday in Ann Arbor. The match will be televised by BTN. FARGO, N.D. -- No. 12 Iowa State (8-2, 3-1 Big 12) picked up a pair of Big 12 wins on Sunday, taking out North Dakota State (32-6) and South Dakota State (19-12). The Cyclones won 15 out of the 20 individual dual matches on the day with five bonus-point victories. NDSU Recap Iowa State opened up the day with a commanding 32-6 victory over NDSU. The Cyclones won nine out of the 10 bouts with four bonus-point victories. Making his return to the Iowa State lineup, Jarrett Degen won by 12-3 major decision over Jaden Van Maanen. Degen used a seven-point third period to score bonus-points over his Bison opponent. Marcus Coleman also made his dual debut on Sunday. He won by 19-4 technical fall over Owen Pentz in 4:22. The Ames, Iowa, native used three takedowns, a reversal and a series of nearfalls to top Pentz. David Carr and Julien Broderson scored a pair of major decision wins for the Cardinal and Gold at 157 pounds and 174 pounds, respectively. Carr took out Jared Franek by 17-5 major decision, while Broderson bested Riley Habisch by 8-0 major decision. Kysen Terukina, Zach Redding, Ian Parker, Joel Shapiro and Gannon Gremmel all secured wins by decision to help push the Cyclones past the Bison. SDSU Recap In the second dual of the day, Iowa State took out South Dakota State by a final score of 19-12. After a slow start, ISU went on to win six of the final eight matches over the Jackrabbits. Sam Colbray saw his first action of the year in the dual. He defeated Jacob Schoon by 6-2 decision behind two takedowns, an escape and a point for riding time. Carr picked up his second bonus-point win of the day, defeating Cade DeVos by 10-2 major decision. Carr took DeVos down four times in the match and racked up over three minutes of riding time. In the dual finale, Gannon Gremmel gritted out a 5-2 victory over Blake Wolters in TB2 to remain perfect on the year. After seven minutes of action, the score was tied 1-1. After 11 minutes of action, Gremmel outlasted Wolters, riding him out in TB2 and scoring on an escape and a takedown to ice the match away. Parker, Degen and Isaac Judge each won their matches by decision, aiding in Iowa State's win over South Dakota State. Next Up Iowa State returns home next Sunday, Feb. 14 to host a quadrangular dual with Arizona State, Northern Colorado and UNI. COLUMBIA, Mo. -- No. 6 Mizzou Wrestling (10-0, 4-0 MAC) defeated SIUE 35-3 on Sunday afternoon inside the Hearnes Center, finishing its 2021 dual season with a perfect overall and Mid-American conference record. Historically, the Tigers have now achieved four all-time unscathed dual seasons in program history. Three of those have occurred under head coach Brian Smith (2020-21, 2017-18 and 2014-15), while Coach Hap Whitney accomplished the other (1967-68). On Sunday's victory over SIUE… "There were some real good matches today. Keegan (O'Toole) and Rocky (Elam) really came out to wrestle. They scored a lot of big points and I really liked the way they wrestled. Zach (Elam) struggled in the period in his match, but produced three takedowns and got the win. That was big for him. WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana -- A quick start and strong finish keyed the top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team's 33-14 win over No. 11 Ohio State on Sunday at Holloway Gymnasium. The Hawkeyes ran out to a 17-0 lead behind two pins and a technical from Spencer Lee, Jaydin Eierman and Austin DeSanto, and after the Buckeyes closed to within three points, 17-14, Iowa finished the dual winning four straight to record its largest margin of victory in the series in 10 years. The Hawkeyes won seven of 10 matches overall, scoring bonus points in five bouts and winning two top-10 matchups. "You go out, you wrestle, and you do your job. That's what they did," said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. "There are different things thrown at you as you're going down the path to get ready to compete. Our guys responded well." Top-ranked Lee opened the scoring with his fourth consecutive first-period fall at 125. He led 14-0 before securing the pin in one minute, 32 seconds, and has outscored his four opponents, 38-0, in seven minutes, 12 seconds of mat time this season. DeSanto, ranked No. 4 at 133, extended the lead to 11-0, scoring three takedowns with two turns in the first period, and adding three more takedowns in the second before terminating his match leading 19-4 in the second. Eierman, ranked No. 1 at 141, kept it rolling with a second-period pin. He wrestled a scoreless first period before locking a cradle and ending the match in five minutes, 23 seconds. It was his third straight pin. "Eierman, big bonus points. Spencer Lee bonus points. DeSanto, averaging 20 points a match. That is a high pace. We have to keep it going," Brands said. Ohio State put together consecutive wins at 149, 157 and 165, totaling 14 team points with a fall, technical fall and decision. No. 5 Max Murin battled No. 2 Sammy Sasso to a 2-2 score heading into the third period, but Sasso turn a Murin shot in a cradle and won by fall in six minutes, 53 seconds. ATHENS, OHIO -- Kent State never trailed in Sunday's dual with the Ohio Bobcats and won back the Grudge Match trophy with a convincing 22-10 win over the rival Bobcats inside the Convocation Center in Athens. Jake Ferri ran his win streak to eight straight with a 5-2 victory over Oscar Sanchez. After a conservative first period, Ferri was able to take control and secure the decision. Brendon Fenton stayed perfect in 2021, winning his fifth match of the season with an 8-6 victory. Fenton won the back-and-forth match with a late score and getting the bonus point for riding time. Ohio got on the board at 141 with a major decision victory and cut the Golden Flashes lead to two at 6-4. Kody Komara won a tight defensive battle, getting the lone escape of the match with Alex Mosconi to win 1-0. Ian Senz fought hard but came up on the short end of a 6-1 decision. James Limongi returned to the lineup in a big way, getting a third-period near-fall to break open a defensive struggle with Nick Vestal and turning it into a 7-1 decision. John Mark Williams stunned Xavier Torres at 174, securing two points late in the third period to flip the script into a 4-3 decision in favor of the Bobcats. Tyler Bates got a pair of stall points against Mason Kroening and earned a take down as well. That's all Bates needed in a 4-1 victory to put Kent State on the doorstep of a victory with a 15-10 lead. Colin McCracken won the battle of Colins in a big way. McCracken earned his sixth victory of the season and secured the Grudge Match victory. McCracken got up on McNamara early and never let up getting the bonus point for the Flashes in a 14-4 major decision. Cover put the exclamation point on the win, getting a 5-3 victory over Jordan Earnest. The victory brings the Grudge Match trophy back to Kent State for the first time since 2017 and moves the Golden Flashes to 4-3 on the season in traditional duals. BETHLEHEM, PA - Senior heavyweight Ethan Laird (Waterford, PA/General McLane) stunned nationally-ranked No. 5 Jordan Wood with an 8-5 decision as the Rider University wrestling team upset No. 25 Lehigh, 17-15, Sunday afternoon at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. With the win, the Broncs' third-straight, Rider improves to 3-1 on the season. Lehigh is now 3-4. Lehigh built a six-point lead, 9-3, on a fall at 125 lbs. and a decision at 141 lbs. sandwiched around a R Richie Koehler (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) decision at 133 lbs. Rider kept the match within reach with sudden victory decisions at 149 and 165 lbs. from Wyatt McCarthy (Newton, NJ/Newton) and Jake Silverstein (Hauppauge, NY/Smithtown [Nebraska]), respectively. EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 9 Illinois took down Northwestern in a dominant 31-6 victory in Evanston on Sunday afternoon, improving to 5-2 on the season. The Illini won eight of the ten matches against the Wildcats, including five-straight matches to wrap up the dual. At 133-pounds, Lucas Byrd picked up his second pin and team-high sixth match win of the season in Sunday's victory. Justin Cardani found himself in another tight battle with Northwestern's Michael DeAugustino. The 125-pound bout to start the afternoon went down to the wire, as Cardani earned an escape with under 20 seconds to go in the third period, but DeAugustino would pick up a minute of riding time to earn the 2-1 decision. Lucas Byrd continued his impressive 2021 campaign, improving to 5-1 on the season after defeating Dylan Utterback by fall (5:15). The redshirt freshman notched his second fall of the season in the third period, pushing the Illini in front of the Wildcats, 6-3. Senior Dylan Duncan wrestled Colin Valdiviez for the eighth time in his career on Sunday afternoon. Duncan got off to a fast start, taking a 4-2 lead into the second period that he would quickly extend with several more takedowns. The senior notched his fourth victory of the season, a 14-4 major decision that extended the Illinois lead to 10-3. Mike Carr and Yahya Thomas had an entertaining 149-pound bout which ended in a 3-2 decision for Carr. The match had only one takedown in the second period, which ended up being the difference-maker in the low-scoring bout which extended the Illinois lead, 13-3. Johnny Mologousis was defeated in an 8-2 decision, dropping the 157-pound bout to Northwestern's Maxx Mayfield. Danny Braunagel returned to the mat after missing the last three duals as a result of a hand injury, and the redshirt sophomore did not miss a beat. Braunagel got off to a slow start in the first period, but ended up racking up 24 points in an impressive major decision victory for the Illini. Trey Sizemore impressed in his second start this season, earning a 4-3 decision and fifth win of the afternoon for the Illini. The tight 174-pound bout extended the Illinois lead to 20-6. Zac Braunagel secured the third straight win for the Illini at 184-pounds with another major decision victory to add on to the Illini lead. Braunagel was aggressive throughout the bout, notching 12 points en route to another victory for the redshirt sophomore. Matt Wroblewski won another match for the Illini at 197-pounds, his fifth match win of the season. The 8-0 major decision victory for the redshirt junior gave Illinois a 30-6 edge over the Wildcats. Luke Luffman and Jack Heyob wrapped up Sunday afternoon's dual with an exciting heavyweight bout, which Luffman would end up winning by decision, 7-2. WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana -- The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team used three pins and a pair of technical falls to defeat No. 18 Purdue on Sunday, 31-18, at Holloway Gymnasium-Hawkeye Arena. Wrestling insertThe Hawkeyes and Boilermakers split the first eight matches, but Iowa held a 22-15 lead in the team score thanks to pins from Jaydin Eierman and Michael Kemerer, and technical falls from Austin DeSanto and Max Murin. DeSanto put up 24 points at 133. He has now outscored his four opponents this season, 84-22. Murin put up a career-high 19 points in a technical fall at 149. Eierman and Kemerer both secured falls in the opening minute of the second period. Eierman's fall was the 40th of his career. The Hawkeyes closed the dual sweeping the final two matches, getting a ranked win from Jacob Warner at 197 and their third fall of the dual from Tony Cassioppi at 285. The win was Iowa's 17th straight overall and 22nd straight in the Big Ten. RIVERSIDE -- Four pins and three major decision victories led California Baptist University wrestling to a strong 39-9 win over Vanguard in its season finale on Saturday in the Van Dyne Gym. Dilan Ajtun, Anthony Loera, Caden Gerlach and Evan Bockman all won their matches with falls, while Christian Nunez, Chaz Hallmark and Max Hammond each had major decisions. Josh Grant added CBU's eighth win in the dual on a decision. CBU won two of its final three duals of the season, as it ended the year with a 2-5 record, while Vanguard suffered its first loss of the season (5-1). Ajtun got the momentum going for CBU with a pin in just 98 seconds at 125 pounds. Nunez and Hallmark then rattled off back-to-back major decisions on scores of 14-3 and 15-2 at 133 and 141, respectively. In his first dual start for CBU, Loera got the first-period fall with just 31 seconds left at 149 to up the Lancers' lead to 20-0. Hammond then put up a 15-4 major win at 157 before Grant got a 5-2 decision at 165 to give the Lancers six-straight wins to open the dual. Gerlach and Bockman then ended the dual with pins at 184 and 197, respectively. Gerlach got his fall in 105 seconds, while Bockman put his opponent's shoulders to the mat 1:08 into the second period. SENIOR DAY Saturday also served as Senior Day for the Lancers' lone senior, heavyweight Zach Schrader. He will always be remembered as the first wrestler in CBU history to earn a top-25 ranking in NCAA Division I after FloWrestling ranked him No. 25 at heavyweight last week. Schrader graduates ranking top-eight in CBU history, with 67 wins and 18 pins in his career. He also holds the NCAA Division I era record with 45 wins and 14 pins the last three years. He has earned two National Collegiate Open All-American finishes the last two seasons, and won the heavyweight title in 2019. EXTRA, EXTRA CBU also went 3-0 in extra matches on Saturday. Marcus Peterson (165) and Chris Island (heavyweight) got pins, while Arick Lopez (197) got an 18-1 technical fall. It capped off a perfect 4-0 season for Lopez.

CLINTON, S.C. -- Gardner-Webb picked up its fourth straight dual win Saturday afternoon, defeating both Presbyterian and Davidson in Southern Conference wrestling action inside Presbyterian's Templeton Center. The day opened against Presbyterian, with the Blue Hose taking the first two matchups of the dual to take an early 6-0 lead over the Runnin' Bulldogs. Gardner-Webb quickly answered, with Trevon Majette defeating Jacob Brasseur by a 20-4 tech fall in 6:17 at 141 pounds and Brandon Bright picking up an 8-3 decision over Reid Stewart at 149 pounds to give GWU a 7-6 lead. HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Redshirt senior Ricky Stamm went 3-0 on the day, including a win at a higher weight class, as Hofstra wrestling took on Bloomsburg and Drexel from inside the David S. Mack Physical Education Center on Saturday, February 6. The Pride won in a convincing 41-6 result over the Huskies of Bloomsburg, pushing Hofstra's dual-meet record to 2-1, while they won six of 12 matches against the Dragons. Junior Dylan Ryder scored the first points of the day for Hofstra with his second win by fall of the season at 125 pounds by way of pin at 5:19 of the match. Redshirt senior Garrett Lambert followed up Ryder with 13-4 major decision victory over Antoine Allen in the 133 pound match for his second win of the season. After a defeat at 141 pounds put the team score at 10-6, Hofstra reeled off seven straight victories, with three coming by way of major decision and two technical falls. Graduate student Greg Gaxiola picked up another win in a Hofstra singlet with an 8-0 major decision at 149 pounds, and junior Holden Heller scored a 5-0 win by decision at 157 pounds. Stamm bullied his opponent in the 165 pound match en route to a 26-10 tech fall win at 6:29 of the match, and again won decisively in an extra match at 174 pounds, scoring a second-period pin. Redshirt freshman Ross McFarland picked up his third win of the year with a pin just seconds into the third period of his 174 pound match. BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- No. 14 North Carolina topped Lehigh, 26-6, on Saturday to finish up a two-win weekend in Pennsylvania. Both Kennedy Monday and Austin O'Connor posted major decision wins to help Carolina to victory. After Lehigh took the match at 125 pounds, Joe Heilmann scored a 5-3 win at 133 pounds to erase the Lehigh lead in the team score, an edge that the Tar Heels would maintain for the rest of the way. No. 11 Zach Sherman had a tight match with Lehigh's Brandon Paetzell at 141 pounds, but used a gritty third period to win, 1-0, leading into the match at 149 pounds. There, top-ranked Austin O'Connor posted his second major-decision victory of the weekend. Against Jimmy Hoffman, O'Connor opened up in the second and third periods to win, 16-4. The Tar Heels continued their run at the middleweights with Josh McClure at 157 pounds. The Tar Heel redshirt senior topped Lehigh's Luca Frinzi, 5-1, to finish up a two-win weekend. At 165 pounds, Monday worked fast in the first period to open up a lead against Brian Meyer. He shot out to an early lead and never looked back, good for a 10-2 major decision - the second UNC bonus-point win of the night. LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Back-to-back pins by Sun Devil wrestlers senior Kordell Norfleet (197) and redshirt freshman Cohlton Schultz (HWT) led No. 7 Arizona State Wrestling (2-2, 1-0 Pac-12) to a 29-19 victory over No. 25 Wyoming (3-3, 1-1 Big 12) Saturday afternoon. "Overall it was a good day for our Sun Devils. I really liked how Crooks and Norfleet wrestled today. They came out with intensity, scored a lot of points, and pushed the action," head coach Zeke Jones said. "Getting bonus points was the difference as well. "Sometimes it can be difficult to win against a top-25 team without two starters and forfeiting a weight, but they decided to pick up the slack and that was the difference in today's dual," said Jones. Jacori Teemer and Trey Munoz were absent in the victory over the Cowboys. ASU and Wyoming began the match at the 174 pound weight class between Austin Clayton and No. 17 Hayden Hastings, with Hastings claiming a quick pin on Clayton. Senior Cade Belshay (184) stepped onto the mat against No. 22 Tate Samuelson for a scoreless first period. Belshay earned an escape point to put himself up 1-0, but Samuelson would answer right back in the third to tie. The two battled it out and ultimately, Belshay scored a two-point takedown before the referee would review his own call and reversed his decision, forcing the bout to go into overtime. An escape point was awarded to Samuelson in the remaining seconds of the match to give the Cowboys a second victory. Down by nine points in the team dual, the Sun Devils' momentum was at the helm of Norfleet and in 1:43 he silenced the crowd by pinning Cowboy Stephen Buchanan, putting up six points for ASU on the board. There would be no rematch between Schultz and No. 13 Brian Andrews, as Brooks Baker stepped onto the mat for Wyoming instead. Schultz earned a quick takedown to begin the bout and six minutes later he pinned Baker. The Sun Devils went on to win four weight classes after Schultz's victory. Transfers Michael McGee and Peter Lipari kept their opponents in close range before tacking points on in the third period. After Crooks, the Sun Devils forfeited at the 157 weight class, giving the Cowboys six points, cutting the ASU lead to 26-15. In the last match of the day, Valencia secured the team win with four takedowns in his 12-7 decision victory over No. 22 Cole Moody. The Nebraska wrestling team earned its first road wins of the season on Saturday, defeating Indiana, 47-0, and Michigan State, 27-10, in Bloomington, Ind. The Huskers improve to 6-1 on the season as they head into the final scheduled dual of the season against Illinois. The Huskers' shutout of the Hoosiers marks the first time since the 2011-12 season that that NU has held two opponents scoreless in a single season. The Huskers previously defeated Maryland, 36-0, this season. Mikey Labriola (174 pounds) and Eric Schultz (197 pounds) both went unbeaten on the day to remain undefeated through seven duals this season. Labriola defeated Indiana's DJ Washington and Michigan State's Nathan Jimenez while Schultz earned wins over the Hoosiers' Nick Willham and the Spartans' No. 5-ranked Cam Caffey. Schultz defeated Caffey in a 6-5 decision to extend his regular season win streak to 11 matches. The streak is a career-high for the Husker, who's previous streak ended at nine matches. Liam Cronin, who transferred to Nebraska from Indiana, finished undefeated in his return to Wilkinson Hall, defeating Jacob Moran, 4-2, and the Spartan's No. 13 ranked Rayvon Foley, 14-13. His win over Foley is his second win over a ranked opponent this season. Nebraska recorded bonus points in seven matches against Indiana, helping the team to the most points recorded in a dual since the Huskers defeated Nebraska-Kearney 47- -1 to open last season. INDIANA DUAL The Huskers dominated the Hoosiers in their first dual of the day, going unbeaten in all ten matches and earning bonus points in seven. Nebraska won three consecutive matches by fall against Indiana, beginning with Alex Thomsen in the 133-pound match. Thomsen was behind 10-0 in the second period, but would not let that hold him back, earning the pin with seven seconds left in the second period. Chad Red Jr. (141 pounds) took just one minute to pin Cayden Rooks and earn his 20th career pin. Brock Hardy followed with his first pin of his Husker career, earning the fall over Jonathan Moran in 0:51. Caleb Licking picked up his second win of the season, shutting out Matt Ortiz in a 6-0 decision at 157 pounds, and Nathan Haas (184 pounds) earned his second varsity win as a Husker in a 12-3 major decision over Drayton Harris. Peyton Robb (165 pounds) added more bonus points for the Huskers with a 10-2 major decision over Nick South. The 197-pound and heavyweight matches were decided by injury default with Eric Schultz and Christian Lance recording two more wins for Nebraska to close the dual. MICHIGAN STATE DUAL Notable wins for the Huskers against the Spartans came from Tucker Sjomeling and Ridge Lovett. Sjomeling earned his first varsity dual win of the season in a 10-4 decision over Jordan Hamdan. Lovett wrestled in his first varsity dual on the year, picking up a 13-3 major decision over Peyton Omania at 149 pounds. Chad Red Jr., Peyton Robb, and Christian Lance were three of six Huskers who finished 2-0 on the day. Lance added bonus points in the Huskers' final match of the day, defeating Christian Rebottaro. 12-4. Red Jr. earned his sixth win of the season in a 6-1 decision over Jaden Eriquez and Robb picked up his fourth consecutive dual win in a 10-3 decision over Caleb Fish. Jevon Parrish earned his first start of the year, but ultimately fell to Chase Saldate, 8-0. EXTRA MATCHES Eight Huskers wrestled in extra matches on Saturday as Nebraska finished 4-9 in those bouts. DEKALB, Ill. -- Brody Teske and Kyle Biscoglia earned pins to give UNI a 12-0 lead and the Panthers never looked back on the way to a 27-9 road win over Northern Illinois Friday evening in Dekalb. Teske continued his undefeated season with a dominant win at 125 to start the dual. He recorded five takedown and scored near fall points before earning a fall at the 6:33 point in the match. Biscoglia on the other hand came from behind. He trailed 4-2 after the first but grabbed the lead in the second with an escape, takedown and back points before earning another takedown in the third which led to his pin. Drew Bennett extended the Panther lead to 15-0 with a 7-4 win and Triston Lara won his bout at 149. The Huskies won decisions at 157, 165 and 174, but the Panthers rebounded in a big way at 184. Parker Keckeisen continued his stellar career start with another statement win against top-10 opponent and reigning MAC champion Brit Wilson. Wilson led 5-2 early in the second period before Keckeisen grabbed a takedown to cut the deficit to 5-4. He added an escape and a takedown in the third and added a ride time point for an 8-5 win. Keegan Moore earned an 11-3 major decision at 197 with a takedown and back points in the final period. Carter Isley moved to 6-0 on the year with a 4-1 decision at 285 to clinch the 27-9 win. For the second time in as many weeks, the 21st-ranked Navy wrestling team (4-1, 1-0 EIWA) shut out its opponent, dealing George Mason (0-3) a 44-0 loss Friday evening at Alumni Hall. Navy's shutout comes on the heels of its 37-0 victory over Cleveland State last Saturday. It's the first time Navy has recorded back-to-back shutouts since the 1962-63 season when the Mids blanked Hofstra 24-0 and followed up with a 30-0 win over Virginia Tech. The evening began with a special video tribute from the family members of Navy's 13 senior wrestlers and support members who made their final appearance at Alumni Hall. Senior 125-pound Logan Treaster set the tone for the Mids by capturing a 9-0 major decision over Josh Jones in the first bout of the night. Treaster was one of eight Navy wrestlers to record bonus-point victories en route to what marked the program's most lopsided win since defeating Delaware Valley 49-0 on Nov. 4, 2017. The Mids earned a pair of victories by way of decision, along with four major decisions and five tech falls, while senior Dean Caravela (174) recorded the team's lone pin of the night at 4:58 against Paul Pierce. Senior team captain Cody Trybus (141) and classmate Casey Cobb (149) remain unbeaten in dual action this season with a 5-0 record, while rookie David Key (184) is now 4-0 and Val Park (157) is 2-0. Navy, who has shut out George Mason in each of the last two matches wrestled in Annapolis (43-0 on Feb. 6, 2018), now leads the series against the Patriots 12-0. Sam Latona won in the final match to give Virginia Tech the victory (Photo/Virginia Tech Athletics) BLACKSBURG -- Virginia Tech wrestling defeated NC State 17-16, criterion 3.21.c after a takedown and near fall in the final seconds of the dual by redshirt freshman Sam Latona. With the No. 8 Hokies trailing the No. 3 Wolfpack 16-13 going into the final matchup at 125 pounds, eighth-ranked Sam Latona stunned the fourth-ranked Jakob Camacho at the buzzer to not only steal the match, but the night. Latona's takedown with seconds left tied the meet at 16, but it was the near fall at the very end that put the Hokies ahead on the third criteria, 49-48 in total match points. With the win, the Hokies clinch at least a share of the ACC Dual Meet Championship and are the only undefeated ACC team remaining. This is the second time in as many seasons that Tech has knocked off the No. 3 team in the country after defeating third-ranked Ohio State on Nov. 17, 2019. MATCH HIGHLIGHTS Latona's win over Camacho was the first of his career over a top-5 opponent. The Alabaster, Alabama native is now 7-0 on the season and is 2-0 against ranked opponents. In what is seeming automatic, Korbin Myers got a major decision win over a ranked opponent Friday night with a 13-5 victory over No. 13 Jarrett Trombley. The eighth-ranked 133-pounder in the country has now knocked off the No. 11, 12 and 13 wrestlers by major decision in three straight weeks. At 149 pounds, Bryce Andonian claimed an important decision over Ed Scott, winning 9-5 and grabbing three team points for the Hokies. The sophomore is now 24-7 in his career and 14-4 in dual matches. Mekhi Lewis kept his winning streak alive and pushed it to 27 straight matches in a 5-0 shutout over No. 15 Thomas Bullard. Lewis is the only Hokie at 8-0 on the season and now has three wins over ranked opponents on the year. In the highest-ranked matchup of the night, No. 2 Hunter Bolen defeated No. 4 Trent Hidlay at 184 pounds for the third time in his career. Bolen beat Hidlay 2-1 Friday night, same score as the 2020 ACC Championship, to move to 3-0 vs. Hidlay without surrendering a takedown. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 20 Virginia wrestling team (3-2, 2-2 ACC) closed out the home portion of its 2021 schedule on Friday (Feb. 5), picking up a 42-3 victory over Duke (0-4, 0-4 ACC) at Memorial Gym. Virginia got five bonus-point victories on the night, using four pins and a forfeit to power their way to the dual victory over the Blue Devils. In all, the Cavaliers won nine weight classes in the dual. The match started with a decision from Patrick McCormick (Poquoson, Va.) at 125 pounds before back-to-back pins from Louie Hayes (Orland Park, Ill.) and Brian Courtney (Athens, Pa.). Duke picked up its one victory over the night with a decision from Josh Finesilver at 149 pounds. Virginia then raced down the stretch, claiming the remaining weight classes, including pins from Jake Keating (Naperville, Ill.) at 165 pounds and Quinn Miller (Lilburn, Ga.) at heavyweight in conjunction with a Blue Devil forfeit at 184 pounds to help lock up the win. Virginia will close out the regular season on the road next weekend, traveling to face No. 14 North Carolina in a 6 p.m. dual on Saturday, Feb. 13. MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 10 Gopher wrestling team (5-2) won five of the last six matches to defeat No. 13 Illinois (4-2), 25-13, on Friday night at Maturi Pavilion. Fifth-year senior Owen Webster upset No. 7 Zac Braunagel at 184 pounds, while top-ranked heavyweight Gable Steveson pinned sixth-ranked Luke Luffman in just 34 seconds to close out the dual. Sophomore Patrick McKee gave the Gophers an early 3-0 lead with a 4-2 decision against No. 13 Justin Cardani at 125 pounds. Ranked seventh in the nation, McKee trailed most of the match, but used a takedown and two-point near fall with one minute remaining to erase a 2-0 deficit. The Illini responded with three straight wins from ranked wrestlers to take a 10-3 lead, but the duo of Brayton Lee and Andrew Sparks erased the deficit with back-to-back technical falls. Ranked sixth in the country, Lee racked up 10 takedowns in a 26-8 victory at 157 pounds. A true freshman from California, Sparks improved to 6-1 in his rookie season with a 22-7 win at 165 pounds. Junior Jake Allar extended Minnesota's lead to 16-10 with an 8-3 decision against DJ Shannon at 174 pounds, while Webster followed with his third straight win against a ranked foe. The Shakopee, Minn., native recorded the match's lone takedown in the second period and opened the third with an escape to deliver a 3-2 decision. After an Illini decision at 197 pounds, it was time for Steveson to continue his dominance. After recording the second-fastest pin in school history at 13 seconds on January 22, Steveson earned the second-fastest fall of his collegiate career in just 34 seconds. The junior from Apple Valley, Minn., is now 7-0 on the season with a major, two pins and four technical falls. The Golden Gophers will hit the road for the final time in the regular season when they face Wisconsin next Friday at 10 a.m. in Madison. CLEVELAND -- Never doubt the importance of bonus points when it comes to college wrestling. Central Michigan and Cleveland State split their 10 matches, but the Chippewas scored bonus points in three of their victories for the difference in a 21-15 Mid-American Conference dual victory at the Vikings' Woodling Gymnasium. The Chippewas improved to 3-2. Cleveland State is 0-3. It was the Chippewas' biggest guns who delivered. Fourth-ranked Drew Hildebrandt won on a first-period pin to open the dual at 125 pounds; 12th-ranked Dresden Simon posted a 16-1 technical fall at 141; and fourth-ranked Matt Stencel took a 13-3 major decision at 285. It was the first pin of the season for Hildebrandt, the first tech fall for Simon, and the first major for Stencel. "That's why we won the dual meet," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said, adding that while it's nice that all three won in dominant fashion, "we don't want to have to put those guys in that position that they have to do something out of character for the team to win. We want them to be themselves and wrestle their own match and not have to worry about that. They can take that on their shoulders, but it'd be nice if they didn't have to." Hildebrandt's win staked CMU to a 6-0 lead and the Chippewas never trailed. Their lead was 11-3 after Simon's tech fall and they were up 17-6 following Cramer's win. But Cleveland State won close decisions at 174, 184 and 197 to draw to 17-15 and make things interesting as Stencel, a two-time All-American, took the mat in the night's final bout. CMU also got close hard-fought decision victories from Johnny Lovett (157) and Alex Cramer (165). Both Cramer and Lovett earned a riding-time point in their victories, Cramer 3-1 and Lovett 3-2. In Lovett's case, the riding-time point was the difference. CMU's Jake Lowell dropped an 8-4 decision at 174 after trailing 8-1. Lowell rode his opponent throughout the third period and came within a whisker late in the bout of turning him and making things very interesting. "The nice thing about all of those matches is that Lovett, Cramer and Lowell were really good on top," Borrelli said. "(Lovett) won on a riding-time point and Cramer was good - really good - on top. Even Lowell, he was good on top; he rode the guy the whole third period and was close to turning him. That was the good thing. Those guys wrestled well on top and wrestled really good third periods." All five of the Chippewas' losses were close: Brock Bergelin (133) and Ben Cushman (184) each lost by one point; Landon Pelham (197) lost by two; and Corbyn Munson (149) lost by three. The Chippewas go to Buffalo on Sunday for a double-dual with the Bulls and Edinboro. It is CMU's final competition before the Feb. 27-28 MAC Championships. "I think they'll get better," Borrelli said of his wrestlers, who had not competed since Jan. 17. "It was a shock to the system tonight for some of them. I just felt like it was important for us to get a match in and get a really good blow in. We had guys that were exhausted. You can't simulate what you feel in a match. I felt like that was a pretty good challenge to overcome." In extra matches, CMU's Drew Marten (133) posted a pair of technical fall victories; Hunter Watts (141) captured a 7-4 victory; Mason Breece won two matches, one of which came on a first-period pin; Tracy Hubbard (157) posted two wins, including a 14-5 major decision; Sage Castillo (197) won by pin in 4:13; and Ryan Ringler (184) also posted a victory. PITTSBURGH -- No. 14 North Carolina defeated No. 15 Pittsburgh, 23-12, Friday night in Fitzgerald Field House. Top-ranked Austin O'Connor won via pin at 149 pounds, while senior Josh McClure posted a tech fall win at 157 pounds to help highlight Carolina's night. Pittsburgh started with a win at 125 pounds, with Colton Camacho posting two points against Wil Guida in the third period courtesy of an escape and a stall call, putting the Panthers on the board first, 3-0 in the team score. Pitt's No. 4 Mickey Phillippi posted a 4-1 decision over Carolina's Joe Heilmann at 133 pounds before UNC's No. 11 Zach Sherman put the Tar Heels on the board for the first time. The Tar Heel redshirt junior went back-and-forth with No. 17 Cole Matthews until late, but used a strong third period and a late takedown to win, 4-1. After three matches, Pitt held a 6-3 lead. At 149 pounds, No. 1 Austin O'Connor went back-and-forth with Pitt's Luke Kemerer early before securing a takedown and a fall in the second. In his third ACC victory of the season, O'Connor put Carolina in the lead, 9-6. Senior Josh McClure kept UNC's winning ways going at 157 pounds. He used an early takedown and a strong handful of back points to post a 17-0 tech fall, pushing Carolina's lead to 14-6. In an action-packed, back-and-forth match at 165 pounds, No. 11 Jake Wentzel used a third-period score to defeat No. 9 Kennedy Monday, 10-6. That cut UNC's lead in the team score to 14-9. At 174 pounds, Clay Lautt shifted momentum back in Carolina's favor with a 6-2 decision over Jared McGill. Tied 2-2 in the third, he notched an escape and takedown to help UNC carry a 17-9 team score lead into the 184-pound match. There, Devin Kane, in his first match wrestling up at 184, rolled to a gritty 6-3 win over Gregg Harvey. Kane scored late and finished on top to secure a 6-3 decision. After Pitt's No. 7 Nino Bonaccorsi defeated redshirt freshman Max Shaw at 197 pounds, Brandon Whitman finished up the night with a 3-1 win over Pitt's Jake Slinger at heavyweight. FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- In its long-awaited season opener, the Drexel University wrestling team opened its 2020-21 campaign on the road against the Sacred Heart University Pioneers on Friday, Feb. 5 in Connecticut, squaring off in a nontraditional dual matchup. There were 18 individual matches scheduled in Fairfield on Friday as the Dragons picked up wins in 13 of them. Bouts started at 165 pounds and Drexel was especially dominate from 125 pounds to 157 pounds, winning nine of 11 to close out the opener. Evan Barczak garnered the first victory for Drexel, a 19-0 technical fall, at 165 pounds. Michael O'Malley and Natty Lapinski kept the streak going at 174 pounds. O'Malley pinned SHU's Grant Horn in the opening 70 seconds while Lapinski turned in a 4-2 decision in sudden victory. In addition to O'Malley, six total Dragons picked up wins by fall on Friday. Bryan McLaughlin's (197) pin came in third period against SHU's Nick Fierro. Jaxon Maroney (133) needed 3:39 to pin Sacred Heart's Thomas Volpe. Julian Flores (149) took care of SHU's Vincent Milazzo in the opening 1:44. Gabe Onorato (149) turned in a late pin against Tommy Eboli of the Pioneers at 6:57. At 157 pounds, Max Livingston turned in the last win by fall for DU, pinning SHU's Jack Molloy in the first period. LEXINGTON, Va. -- App State wrapped up another strong regular season with a sweep of VMI and The Citadel on Friday. The Mountaineers posted a 33-12 victory against the host Keydets before winning 41-3 against the Bulldogs. With a 44-5 league record since the start of the 2014-15 season -- the fifth-best mark in Division I wrestling during that time -- App State has either gone undefeated or lost just one Southern Conference match in seven straight seasons. The Mountaineers closed the 2020-21 regular season at 7-2 overall and 7-1 in SoCon duals. App State won the first seven matches against VMI and totaled seven wins with bonus points to go along with Cody Bond's comeback victory via a 10-9 decision at 157 pounds. Mason Fiscella's pin at 197 pounds gave App State a 41-0 lead against The Citadel in a win highlighted by victories against ranked opponents from No. 19 Jonathan Millner (13-1 major decision against No. 27 Selwyn Porter at 149 pounds) and Julian Gorring (8-3 decision against No. 33 Kyle Kretzer at 184 pounds). Codi Russell (125), Millner and Will Formato (165) went 8-0 in SoCon duals this season, while Sean Carter (6-1 at 133) had the best record in his weight class and Bond (7-1) was one of two starters with just one league loss at 157. At 13-1 overall, the 12th-ranked Formato outscored his opponents 120-9 and didn't allow a takedown in his 13 victories. The postseason begins in three-plus weeks with the SoCon Championships on Feb. 28 at the Holmes Center in Boone, and the NCAA Championships are scheduled to begin March 18 in St. Louis. Extending its SoCon dual win streak to 16, Campbell (8-1, 7-0 SoCon) topped Bellarmine (1-8, 1-6 SoCon) 47-3 to open the day, then defeated host Chattanooga (7-4, 5-2 SoCon) 17-15 at McKenzie Arena. After posted a season-high 47 points against the Knights, CU overcame a 15-3 deficit to top Chattanooga, winning the final four individual matchups for the sweep. Chattanooga led 15-3 after Andrew Nicholson's 2-1 overtime win at 165 pounds, the Mocs' second win of the match in extra time. Josh Heil's 4-0 win at 141 pounds was CU's only win through the match's first six bouts. At 174 pounds, Austin Murphy jumpstarted the Camels with a first period pin (1:22), topping Carial Tarter, and Caleb Hopkins followed with a 5-2 decision for CU. Chris Kober tied up the team score for Campbell, working a third period takedown to win the 197 bout 4-3 over Logan Andrew, but CU was assessed a one point unsportsmanlike penalty, giving Chattanooga a one point edge heading into the final weight class. Taye Ghadiali sealed the 17-15 win for Campbell, topping Grayson Walthall 4-1 at heavyweight. All nine of Campbell's individual wins against Bellarmine came by bonus points, including five tech falls, three pins and a major decision. CU led 26-0 midway through the lineup after Benjamin Barton's 22-6 tech at 157. Zurich Storm at 125 (18-2), Gabriel Hixenbaugh at 133 (19-4), Heil at 149 (16-1) and Kober at 197 (24-7) also picked up tech falls in the win, while Shannon Hanna at 141, Hopkins at 184 and Ghadiali at heavyweight all registered first period pins. Murphy also notched a major decision at 174. Eric Beck's decision gave Bellarmine its only win at 165. Heil (4-0), Hopkins (7-0), Kober (4-0) and Murphy (7-0) all finished their 2021 SoCon slate undefeated, with Murphy (10-0) and Kober (4-0) also going unbeaten through the regular season. LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell wrestling team's home duals against American and Binghamton, scheduled for this Sunday, have been postponed. The postponement comes as a result of the University's shift to remote instruction from Feb. 5-12, along with restrictions in in-person gatherings during that period. Makeup dates will be announced at a later time, provided a scheduling opportunity can be mutually agreed upon by the institutions. Bucknell's next scheduled competition is a dual at Lehigh on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m., followed by the EIWA Championships at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Manheim, Pa., on Feb. 26.
