Eastern Michigan dominated the wrestling Saturday as the Eagles won all of three of their meets at Bowen Field House. EMU defeated Eastern Illinois 33-19 in the opener and came back later to beat Duquesne 37-9 and then Olivet College 21-9. The Eagles were led by senior Captain Chad Roush (157/165), junior Ahmed Joumaa (141/149), and sophomore Tony Lyssiotis (197), who all had 3-0 records for the day. Against Eastern Illinois, EMU jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead when Phillip Plowman pinned Tony Metzger at 133, following a forfeit win by Sean Clair at 125. After the Panthers got on the board at 141, the Eagles responded with three exciting victories. At 149, Ahmed Joumaa came back from an early deficit and pinned Jeff Tharp at 4:31. Freshman Quinn Guernsey took EIU's Chris Smith into overtime and the tie-breaker to win 6-5. Senior Chad Roush then pinned Andy Mangiaguerra in the less than a minute and a half of their match to give EMU an insurmountable 27-3 lead. Eastern dominated Duquesne, winning 8 of the 10 matches en route to a 37-9 victory. The visiting Dukes from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania won two matches in the meddle of the meet at 165 and 174 but the Eagles took all of the rest. At 125, freshman Sean Clair finished his perfect 2-0 day with a second period pin of Jonathan Bittinger. Phillip Plowman also had a 2-0 day with a 9-2 victory over Keith Pavlekovsky at 133. Ahmed Joumaa shut out Brad Cipriani 4-0 at 141. At 149, junior Nick Conklin defeated Dan Pauley 8-1. Captain Chad Roush then completed the string of five Eagles victories with a 10-0 major decision over Cody Midlam to stake Eastern to a 19-0 lead in the meet. After the two losses, redshirt freshman John McClure scored a big throw for a fall in the first period of his match against Mike Buczkowski. That started a string of three straight first period pins for Eastern. At 197 Tony Lyssiotis pinned Tim Frank in 2:08. Freshman Jake Wood then stuck Joe D'Orsie at 1:55 of their heavyweight match to end the rout. The closest match of the day for Eastern came against Division III Olivet (MI) College. The Comets are ranked 11th in the nation in Division III and had earlier in the day knocked off Duquesne by a 22-15 margin. Eastern however won 7 of the 10 matches and posted a 21-9 win for their third victory of the day. No bonus points were scored in any of the matches but the Eagles won the first six bouts. The premiere match up came at 149 where EMU's sophomore Jermaine Thompson, recently ranked 20th in Division I, faced Olivet's Jason Brew, who is currently ranked 6th in the nation in Division III. Thompson had been held out of the earlier matches with an injury but scored three big takedowns on his way to a convincing 8-4 decision over Brew. Earlier redshirt freshman Zach Beck got into the lineup at 125 and defeated Kyle Labrecque 6-5. Freshman Chris Jenkins stepped in at 133 and knocked off Kefentse Mandisi 8-3. At 141, Ahmed Joumaa completed his perfect day with a 5-2 victory over Rob Yahrmarkt. Quinn Guernsey got his second win of the day when he edged Mike Daubenmeyer 6-5. Senior captain Chad Roush then completed the string of EMU victories with a 2-1 win at 157 to give the Eagles an 18-0 lead in the meet. Tony Lyssiotis finished out the Eastern scoring with a 5-1 win over Aaron Stewart at 197 pounds. -

DAVIS, Calif. -- The Cal State Bakersfield wrestling team rebounded from a tough loss Friday night with one of its best showings of the year so far, downing UC Davis in a Pac–10 dual 20–19 Saturday night at Hickey Gym in Davis. The Roadrunners picked up big wins from unexpected sources to run their record to 3–4 on the season and 2–2 in the Pac–10. UC Davis, which entered the contest ranked third in the conference, dropped to 3–6 overall and 1–2 in conference. The dual went back and forth, with each team winning five matches. The turning point, however, came just after the midway point as sophomore Brandon Ceremello (Clovis HS) picked a good time for his first pin and second win of the season. Ceremello, who had wrestled tough against a number of the conference's top wrestlers in the last week, finally broke through with a win. With the Roadrunners trailing 12–8 entering the 184–pound match, Ceremello managed to quickly turn Tyler Bernacchi onto his back and record the much–needed pin in just 1:41. The victory gave Bakersfield a 14–12 edge and seemed to turn to the momentum of the match. After Davis opened with a technical fall at 141 pounds, the Roadrunners regained the lead with a pair of major decision victories. Brandon Doyle (Ramona HS) had little trouble with Shawn Haratani at 149 pounds, recording a 14–5 major decision. He was followed by Daniel Atondo (Sunnyvale/Fremont HS), who scored a major decision at 157 pounds, downing Jon Clark by a 17–7 count. The Aggies responded with a pair of wins to jump right back into the lead. At 165 pounds, Brian Busby (San Diego/Scripps Ranch HS) faced off against Frank Richmond in a battle of ranked wrestlers in the Pac–10. Richmond, however, got the better of Busby on the day, recording the 13–7 decision. That was followed by Ken Cook scoring a 13–5 major decision over Garth Wara (Madera HS) at 174 pounds, giving Davis a 12–8 lead. After Ceremello's victory, 197 pounder Colton Nichols (Poway HS) was unable to record back–to–back wins despite wrestling a strong match, eventually falling to Eliot Kelly by a 12–6 count and giving Davis a slight 15–14 edge. Heavyweight Eric Parker (Ramona HS) then took the three points back, continuing his hot streak with a 9–3 win over Broc Maffia. Freshman Brandon Zoetewey (San Ramon/De la Salle) then followed with what has been the best showing of his young collegiate career, scoring a decision over Marcos Orozco at 125 pounds, just missing out on a major decision with an 11–4 victory. The victory gave the Roadrunners a 20–15 edge heading into the 133 pound match. That match pitted UC Davis' Omar Gaitan, one of the best wrestlers at 133 pounds in the Pac–10, and Bakersfield freshman Thomas Kimbrell (Dawsonville, Georgia/Dawson County HS), who has been doing a good job replacing Tommy Vargas (Highland/Northwestern) while the senior has been out sick. Though Kimbrell struggled with the much more experienced Gaitan, he battled hard to avoid the tech fall or the pin, eventually falling by major decision, but preserving the Roadrunners victory with a strong showing. Bakersfield takes a bit of a break before traveling north to face Oregon and Oregon State on Friday (Jan. 27).

Portland State's 174-pounder Karras Kalivas extended his dual match win streak to five straight Saturday in Brookings, S.D. Kalivas' 8-2 win over Travis Gottschalk came a little too late however, as the Vikings lost 28-18 to the South Dakota State Jacks. With the loss, Portland State drops 1-12 on the season. Kalivas' victory continues his impressive showing in the month of January. Nebraska-Kearney's Paul Sutton, who faced Kalivas on Jan. 7, is the only dual competitor to beat the Bakerfield, Calif., native this month. Saturday's match began with two straight pins by the Jacks at 197-pounds and heavyweight before freshman Bricen Yakabe won by forfeit at 125-pounds. Freshman 157-pounder Shane Evenhus then followed three straight Viking defeats to take his first victory of the season, 3-1 against Brad Gregory. For the second straight season, the Vikings 184-pound wrestler, sophomore Sean Murphy, recorded his first dual victory of the season by pinning South Dakota's Levi Krehmeyer. NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 8/8 Oklahoma wrestling team defeated No. 20/20 Cal Poly, 36-8 Saturday night inside Howard McCasland Field House. The Sooners finished the day strong, defeating the Mustangs after putting away Fresno State, 50-0 earlier in the day. "I was very impressed and pleased with how aggressive we wrestled tonight," said head coach Jack Spates. "We scored a bunch of pins which I was very happy to see because we have been stressing that a lot in practice. I thought the National Duals last weekend was a good competition to help prepare us for this match." The Sooners led from beginning to end and the outcome was never in question. Sam Hazewinkel scored a fall on John Hanks in their 125 pound match at the 2:38 mark to begin the night. Also scoring a fall for the Sooners was Jake Hager in the heavyweight match against Arturo Basulto at the 0:39 mark. PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Junior 141-pounder Steve Adamcsik (Chester, NJ) and senior 184-pounder Rudy Medini (Colonia, NJ) accounted for two of the four Scarlet Knights victories on the evening; however, the Rutgers University wrestling team fell to EIWA opponent Brown, 19-16, on Saturday evening at the College Avenue Gymnasium. Sophomore 125-pounder Ryan Jablonski (Norristown, PA) opened the match for the Scarlet Knights by defeating Nate Myers of Brown by an 8-7 count. Unfortunately, RU dropped four of the next five matches to fall behind 13-8. Freshman Mike Whalen (Lake Hiawatha, NJ) defeated Brown's Matt Gevlinger by way of a 12-4 major decision and Medini followed him with his 18th victory of the season. However, the Scarlet Knights fell short by losing the final two matches of the night. With the victory, Adamcsik extended his personal unbeaten streak to 15 matches and improved his overall record to 20-3. The junior is also 10-1 in dual meet action, good for tops on the team. Rutgers head coach John Sacchi was disappointed his team lost, but explained that his young team is learning new things every day. "We're starting five freshmen and that is tough," Sacchi said. "They are learning, but they are learning slowly and we've got to pick it up. Adamcsik and Medini are carrying the team and the younger guys must feed off of their lead." With the loss, the Scarlet Knights fell to 7-4 on the season, including a 2-4 mark in EIWA Conference action. The win improved the Bears of Brown University to 1-1 in EIWA Conference action and 4-3 on the season overall. The Scarlet Knights will look to get back on the right track when they travel to Lawrenceville, NJ on Wednesday, Jan. 25 for a 7:00 p.m. showdown against the Broncs of Rider University. Eighth-ranked Augustana College picked up eight victories en route to a 34-9 win over instate rival Northern State University Saturday night in front of 523 fans at the Elmen Center. The Vikings improved to 9-2 in duals, while Northern State dropped to 2-3. Augustana had some misfortune at the outset of the dual. Chris Trampe, the Vikings 125-pounder, was leading 5-1 over Austin Johnsrud in the first period and in control of the match when he was forced to retire due to an injury. The injury default gave the Wolves a quick 6-0 lead. The lead was short-lived though as Jeremie Degen and Jordan Burmeister posted back-to-back major decisions at 133 and 141 pounds to give Augustana an 8-6 edge. Degen defeated Logan Hayman 13-3, while Burmeister picked up a 9-1 win over Mark Burkart. Ryan King, ranked No. 6 at 149 pounds, kept the winning ways going for Augie. After a scoreless first period against Jesse Wood, King turned up the pressure in the final two periods to record a 10-5 decision. Matt McDougall then boosted the Viking lead to 14-6 with a 9-4 decision over Dana Dargatz at 157 pounds. Northern State picked up its other victory at 165 pounds where Matt Englund upset No. 7 Cody Henriksen 7-1. Englund led 2-0 after one period and 3-1 after two periods. He then scored an escape early in the third period to go ahead 4-1. A late takedown and 2:56 of riding time accounted for the final score. The Vikings dominated the upper weights. At 174 pounds, Dusty Wilking was leading Spencer Rocker 8-0 when Wilking pinned Rocker at the 4:09 mark. That made the score 20-9 in favor of Augustana. Following a forfeit at 184 pounds, Tim Boldt, ranked No. 2 at 197 pounds, used 9 takedowns to pick up a 20-7 major decision over Todd Naasz. Heavyweight Cris Bietz wrapped up the dual with an 11-3 major decision over Jess Hockley. The Vikings return to the mat on Friday, January 27, when they travel to Mankato, Minn., to face No. 2 Minnesota State University in a 7 p.m. dual. ALAMOSA, Colo. -- The University of Northern Colorado Bears, led by now 2-time 197-pound champion Reece Hopkin, squeaked out a narrow 4-point victory and their sixth all-time title at the Colorado Collegiate Invitational held Saturday in Adams State College's Plachy Hall. UNC had seven total placewinners and narrowly edged defending champion Air Force with 86.5 points in the 21st annual tournament. The 4-point margin of victory was the closest since 1995 when Western State edged Air Force by three points. The host Grizzlies went 4-0 in the championship finals and finished fourth with 56.5 points. The Grizzlies were without three normal starters, including two returning NCAA Division II All-Americans, because of injuries. Western State went without a champion but had seven place winners to finish third with 70 team points. Colorado Mines had one third place finisher and finished fifth with 11.5 team points. The Central Oklahoma Bronchos, ranked fifth in NCAA Division II, and the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys also competed in the 7-team tournament. Both of those schools were not figured in the team scoring. However, both teams fared well with the Bronchos claiming a tournament-high 11 placewinners, including four champions in Earl Jones (133), Shea Timothy (149), Cort Petersen (165) and Josh LeadingFox (Heavyweight), all nationally-ranked wrestlers. New Mexico Highlands had one third place finisher in heavyweight Charles Saguil. 174-pound junior James Reynolds (Monte Vista, Colo.), one of Adams State's individual champions, was named as the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler after a vote of the competing teams' head coaches. Northern Colorado's Jack Maughn was named as the Colorado Collegiate Coach of the Year after leading the Bears to their first title since 2003. Northern Colorado had seven total placewinners and was in a battle with the Falcons throughout the later rounds of the tournament. They did not clinch the title until the closing stages of the night as Hopkin defeated 2005 champoion Brenden McLean of Air Force. In the battle of two nationally-ranked wrestlers from the Division I level, Hopkin cruised to a 13-0 major decision win, the ultimate difference in the team scoring chase. Hopkin had pinned McLean in the second period of the 2004 final in Greeley. Hopkin, ranked 19th in this week's Intermat/NWCA Division I rankings, improved to 18-4 on the year and posted two major decision wins and a semfinal win by fall over Central Oklahoma's Heath Jolley. McLean, ranked 17th in this week's rankings, suffered his first loss of the season in the championship, falling to 6-1. Adams State seniors Rob McCabe (Nucla, Colo.) and Scott Cleve (Escondido, Calif.) each defended their state titles at 125 and 157 pounds, respectively. Grizzly junior Brian Pitts (Rio Rancho, N.M.) also won a second career title. He scored a 7-4 decision over Northern Colorado's Richard Lohr in the finals. Pitts had won the 125-pound title as a true freshman in 2002. Air Force was paced by 184-pound champion Zane Hershey. Seven of the top-seeded wrestlers claimed titles while Hershey won as the second seed. Pitts was a third seed while Reynolds proved to be the upset winner as the fourth seed. He scored a thrilling 6-4 win over Western State redshirt freshman Charlie Pipher, seeded third, in the championship finals. That win avenged a 13-5 major decision setback to Pipher in a dual meet on Jan. 12 in Gunnison. Reynolds had defeated 2005 runner-up and top-seeded Shawn Hart of Northern Colorado in the semifinals.

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Patrick Simpson and Jon Anderson each won an individual title to lead Army's wrestling team to its third straight team crown at the 37th annual New York State Championships at Oswego State University's Max Ziel Gymnasium Saturday evening. The Black Knights racked up 152 points, and outdistanced the field by 17.5 markers. Simpson, a senior from Nashville, Tenn., completed his dominant run through the 149-pound bracket with a pair of overwhelming victories. The team captain, who was the top seed at 149 pounds, earned a 19-4 technical fall over Nassau's Frank Meringelo in the semifinals, before scoring a 13-2 major decision triumph versus second-seeded Pat Lloyd of Buffalo in the championship final. Simpson, who cashed in a pin and a technical fall during yesterday's action, is a team-best 21-5 on the season. His victory over Lloyd–the 75th of his career—gave Simpson his second straight individual title at the New York States, after winning the 141-pound championship as a junior last year. Simpson was recognized as the tournament's "Outstanding Wrestler" following his superb two-day effort. Anderson, a senior who hails from Virginia Beach, Va., pinned Cornell's David Post in 2 minutes, 9 seconds in his first match of the day. The four-year performer then finished his championship run with a 6-5 decision over Columbia's Dustin Tillman in the finals. Anderson, who authored a perfect 3-0 mark this weekend, is a sterling 15-3 on the season. William Simpson, Frank Baughan, Brian Rowan and Charles Martin all chipped in with runner-up finishes in their respective weight classes. Simpson, an up-and-coming freshman 125-pounder, upset second-seeded Jon Spinner of Oswego with a 6-1 decision to reach the championship final, before dropping a tough 6-2 decision to top-seeded Jeff Sato of Columbia in the final bout. Baughan qualified for the title bout at 133 pounds with a 14-1 major decision over Joe Jewett of Oswego. In the final match, the Army junior fell to Buffalo's Mark Budd, 8-7. Rowan, the No. 4 seed in the 157-pound draw, upset top-seeded John Cummings of Buffalo, 8-2, to reach the finals, where his run was halted by third-seeded Jad Duca of Ithaca, 5-2. Martin finished runner-up at 197 pounds. The senior downed RIT's Zach Greenberg, 3-1, in his first bout of the day, before falling to Kyle Cerminara of Buffalo, 14-5, in the championship match. Elsewhere, freshman Michael Sprigg, who was the No. 4 seed in the heavyweight draw, placed third by defeating third-seeded Arkadiy Levitin of Hunter, 5-3, in the consolation final. Sprigg has won five of his last six bouts and stands at 11-9 on the season. Army head coach Chuck Barbee was pleased with his team's effort throughout the weekend. "I thought our guys competed hard for two straight days," commented the Black Knight mentor. "We fought all weekend long, and we got a couple of outstanding performances out of Patrick Simpson and Jon Anderson. It was a solid team effort all the way around with two champions and four guys placing runner-up." OSWEGO, NY -- Despite a tournament-high three individual championships, the University at Buffalo wrestling team had to settle for second place to Army for the second straight year at the 37th Annual New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships at SUNY Oswego's Laker Hall on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls, who placed seven wrestlers at the tournament, came to the frindge of the championship the year, making a mad charge through the finals, winning three of their first four championship bouts, but thanks to a stalling call in the third period of the heavyweight finals, the Bulls not only lost the match, but the tournament, finishing with 134.5 points to Army's 152. Cornell (109.5), Columbia (97) and Ithaca (91) rounded out the top five in the 17-team field. Still, Buffalo earned three individual championships to increase its tournament record to 57 champions, as senior 197-pounder Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) and junior 133-pounder Mark Budd (Orrville, OH/Orrville) won their second titles and senior 184-pounder Garrett Hicks (Chautauqua, NY/Chautauqua Lake) wrapped up his first. The NWCA/InterMat/NWMA's seventh-ranked Cerminara dominated en route to his 30th straight win and sixth tournament title of the season, as he routed Army's Charles Martin, 14-5 in the finals. His earlier matches were much the same story, as he posted a 21-5 technical fall of Hunter's Brian Scher to begin the tournament. He followed with a 16-4 rout of Cornell's Taylor Moore and reached the finals on the strength of a 17-6 whitewash of Ithaca's Nick Calandrino. Fifteenth-ranked Budd ran his record to 28-3 overall, winning an 8-2 decision against Columbia's Eric Amstutz and then winning a hard-fought 8-7 decision in the finals against WrestlingReport.com's Atlantic Region's 17th-ranked Frank Baughan in the finals. He posted an 18-1 technical fall of RIT's Julian Nichols to advance to the quarterfinals where he took a 9-6 decision from Cornell's Nick Bridge. Photo of Garrett Hicks Garrett Hicks Hicks, who is in the midst of a career-best 10-match winning streak won a 10-9 decision against Hunter's Terry Madden in the finals. To begin the tournament, Hicks beat Cornell's Mike Moore, 6-2, then pinned Alfred State's Justin Stewart at the 4:43 mark to earn a bid to the semis, where he pinned Ithaca's Robert Stubbs in 5:47. Senior Harold Sherrell (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) finished second, losing a heartbreaking 3-2 decision in the finals to Division III's sixth-ranked Pat Bennett of Brockport, thanks to a disastrous stalling call in the third period. He beat Oswego's Jake Taylor, 9-2, in the first round, then beat Cornell's Matt Pollock, 2-1, in the quarterfinals and then earned his 73rd career win to enter the top 15 in UB's career history as he beat Army's Michael Sprigg, 2-0, to reach the finals. Junior Pat Lloyd (Middletown, NY/Valley Central) beat Cortland's Jason Chase, 6-1, in the quarterfinals and then beat Oswego's Dane LaPlante, 2-1, in overtime to reach the 149-pound finals, where he fell to Army's Patrick Simpson, 13-2. Two Bulls, 141-pound senior Cliff Smith (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) and 157-pound junior John Cummings (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore), took third to contribute to the team points. Smith, who has entered the starting 10 for the first time this year, responded with four wins, beating Nassau Community's Al Iaquinta, 4-1, in the first round before posting a 14-1 win against Oswego's Phil Gordon in the quarterfinals. He fell to Cortland's top-seeded Paul LaBlanc, 5-1, in the semis, but rebounded with a 7-5 win over Columbia's Dean Kinports and an 8-2 win over RIT's Luke Baum in the third-place match. Cummings also earned four wins, as he Oneonta's Dave Ballard and then winning a 15-0 technical fall against Oswego's Eric Dicapua on day one before losing to Army's Brian Rowan in the semis. After winning a medical forfeit, he beat RIT's Nate Bachmann, 3-2, in the third-place match. LARAMIE, Wyoming -- Utah Valley State picked up two wins Saturday at the Cowboy Duals on the campus of the University of Wyoming. The Wolverines topped Western Wyoming 29-21 in the first match before knocking off Wyoming 26-19 to earn the sweep. Several wrestlers came up huge for the Wolverines, none more so than freshman heavyweight Dallin Norton. Norton had the weight of both matches on his massive shoulders, picking up two falls to help UV to the victory in both duals. "Dallin came through," said Utah Valley coach Cody Sanderson. "That's the way he likes it too. He wants the match to come down to him. He likes the pressure." Erkin Tadzhimetov also earned two falls on the day, while Talon Vickers, DJ Meis and Ivan Bigney also picked up two wins apiece. Against Wyoming, Vickers opened up the scoring at 125 pounds scoring a 6-3 decision over Cody Grant. Tadzhimetov then broke his own school record when he pinned Tyson Shatto just 35 seconds into the 133 pound match. His previous record came in January of 2004 when he pinned Garrett Eller of the Colorado School of Mines 38 seconds in. "He knew we needed those extra points and he made it look really easy," said Sanderson. "He's just wrestling better and better all the time. His emergence as a team leader has been great too." The two wins for Tadzhimetov extend his winning streak to nine and also add to his school record for wins in a season, giving him 25 victories so far in 05-06. 141 pounder Daniel Polkowske had his way with Shay Lawrence, scoring an 11-3 major decision to give Utah Valley a 13-0 lead. The Cowboys would fight back though when Carter Downing topped Justin Rawle by major decision 11-1, Dan Clum pinned Tanner Cowan (4:31) and Gary Dack scored three points in the final minute to beat Devin Siddoway 5-3, knotting up the team scores at 13. At 174 pounds, Meis outscored Dan Barrone 5-1 in the third period to win 7-4, regaining the lead for the Wolverines at 16-13. "DJ came through huge for us. He was the underdog but he wrestled smart and his patience paid off," said Sanderson. Bigney used two near falls in the third period to give himself a 15-6 major decision over Preston Pavich at 184 pounds, giving UV a 20-13 advantage. "Ivan wrestled really well. He wrestled smart, he wrestled patient. Compared to last season he is just a different wrestler," said Sanderson. A forfeit by Utah Valley at 197 pounds put all the pressure on the heavyweight Norton, who scored his second fall of the day when he pinned Dusty Hoffschneider (1:56) to give Utah Valley State the 26-19 win. "This win is probably the biggest win we've had as a team in our two and a half years," said Sanderson. In the opening dual against Western Wyoming, the Wolverines split the 10 matches, giving up a forfeit a 197. All five wins by Utah Valley earned bonus points, with four falls and one technical fall. Vickers, Tadzhimetov and Norton each pinned their opponents less than 1:20 into the match, while Meis earned his first win as a Wolverine by pinning Craig Mock early in the third period. Bigney scored a tech fall over Colt Reese to round out the wins by Utah Valley over Western Wyoming. Up next for UV will be Adams State next Saturday night in Alamosa, Colorado. The next home dual for the Wolverines will be the following week, on February 4th against South Dakota State.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland Terrapin wrestling team earned bonus points in five matches on its way to a 26-15 victory over VMI Saturday afternoon at Comcast Pavilion. Jerry Afari won by fall and Alex Krom picked up a technical fall as the Terps won their second consecutive dual. "The guys really worked hard and tried to build on their leads and score points when they could - wrestling is fun when you are on offense and scoring points," head coach Pat Santoro said. "The kids are doing a good job and we'll try to use this momentum into the big ACC weekend next week." With the win, the Terps improve to 3-7 on the year. VMI drops to 1-5-1 this season. James Knox got the Terps started with an 11-3 major decision over Lam Ly in the 125 bout. Knox led midway through the third period, but aggressively pursued bonus points in the third. He started the period out with a reversal, and then quickly cut Ly. He then registered three more takedowns in the final period and with the bonus point from riding time earned the major decision. In the 133 bout, Brandon Stillo scored a reversal and two nearfall points as time expired in the final period to rally past Brendan Byrne, 10-6. The Terps responded with Alex Krom taking the mat as he continued his dominance, picking up his second-straight technical fall with a 15-0 win over Jochen Granja at 141 pounds. Krom came out strong in the first period scoring a takedown and two, three-point nearfall counts for an 8-0 lead. He picked up two more takedowns, was awarded a penalty point for stalling on Granja and racked up over three minutes of riding time for the 15th point and the technical fall. The Keydets countered with a decision at 149 by Sam Alvarenga over Andrew Schlaffer to make the dual 9-6. In the match, Alvarenga managed three takedowns on Schlaffer and allowed only one to take the 9-5 victory. The Terps stretched their lead in the dual in the next three weights, starting at 157 pounds with another bonus-point victory as Adam James recorded the major decision against Tommy Cunningham. In what was an even first period, James converted an explosive five-point move when he threw Cunningham to his back near the end of the period. He scored an escape and a takedown in the second period and converted a takedown in the third to secure the major decision for Maryland. Adam DeCosmo also used a big five-point move in his 12-4 major decision over Chris Hardy. With 12 seconds left in the first period, DeCosmo hit a cradle that he nearly converted for a fall but time expired. DeCosmo stayed on the offensive in the second, recording a reversal and a takedown to take a commanding 9-1 lead. He then tallied a takedown in the final period, but allowed a reversal as time expired. However, with a 1:07 riding time, DeCosmo earned the final point necessary for the four-point major decision. Dominic Buckman came out victorious in one of the closest bouts of the day, defeating Dustin McCabe 4-2 at 174 pounds. Buckman's takedown in the first minute of the match stood up as the only offensive points and proved to be the difference in the victory. The Keydets won a close match of their own at 184 pounds as Corry Murray edged Luke Stauffer, 6-4. Holding a narrow 4-3 lead in the closing seconds of the third period, Murray countered a shot by Stauffer to get the match-deciding takedown to close the gap in the dual to 20-9 in favor of Maryland. Afari stifled any Keydet rally, though, by pinning Kyle Elgert at the 3:22 mark. Afari had already built an 11-3 lead in the first period, and when Elgert started the second on the bottom, Afari was able to tilt him for the fall. In the final bout of the day, Scott Buhman won by injury default over Maryland heavyweight Bryan Reiss. Buhman led the match 8-1 in the third before a scramble on the edge of the match resulted in an injury to Reiss, making the final score 26-15. The Terps will be back in action next weekend with three ACC duals at Comcast Pavilion. NORMAN, Okla. -- It took the No. 8/8 Oklahoma wrestling team only 59 minutes to dispose of the Fresno State Bulldogs in a brutal 50-0 beating Saturday inside Howard McCasland Field House. The Sooners had the upper hand to begin the dual with Fresno State forfeiting three matches at 157 pounds, 165 pounds and 174 pounds. Add to that three falls and two major decisions by the Sooners and you have your outcome. "I thought we wrestled very well today," said head coach Jack Spates. "I am very pleased to be getting pins not just wins, and I thought we were focused and aggressive. Sam (Hazewinkel) was a little sloppy but he turned his match around at the end and came through with a victory and Jake (Hager) was in a tough match and pulled away at the end and that's what you like to see." Hazewinkel led off for the Sooners by defeating Cory Borges by a decision of 9-6. Teyon Ware scored the Sooners first fall at the 4:06 mark in his 141 pound match defeating Garrett Spooner of Fresno State. Matt Storniolo followed that up with a fall at the 2:37 mark against Dustin Rocha in their 149 pound match. At 184 pounds Justin Dyer notched a major decision of 14-5 against Greg Gifford. Joel Flaggert made quick work of Brandon Halsey scoring a fall in the first period at 0:56 seconds in his 197 pound match. Heavyweight Jake Hager dominated Cody Parker taking home a major decision 11-3 to close out the day. "Were going to have to step it up in tonight's match because it's going to be a lot stiffer competition. I think were going to come out ready to wrestle and I'm excited to see it," continued Spates. Oklahoma hosts Cal Poly tonight at 7 p.m. in the nightcap of their double header. Fans can have their picture taken with mascots Boomer or Sooner before the match from 6-7 p.m and the first 200 fans will receive a free OU t-shirt. The Sooners are home again next weekend Sat. Jan. 28, when it hosts Iowa State at 4 p.m. inside the Howard McCasland Field House.

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Oklahoma State won seven matches and Jake Rosholt and Steve Mocco finished off Missouri with back-to-back falls as the Cowboys toppled the Tigers, 29-10, at the Hearnes Center in Columbia, Mo., on Sunday afternoon. OSU improved to 12-1 on the season and 2-0 in Big 12 matches, while Missouri dropped to 8-4 and 0-1 in conference action. The dual started at 125 where Coleman Scott got OSU rolling with a 10-3 decision over Austin Devoe. Nathan Morgan followed with a decision over Tyler McCormick to put the Cowboys up 6-0. Chris McCormick put Missouri on the board at 141, but it was all Oklahoma State from that point on. The Cowboys won the next three matches, including major decisions by Zack Esposito and Johny Hendricks. Hendricks defeated fifth-ranked Matt Pell to make the dual score 17-3. At 174, Missouri's top-ranked Ben Askren was relieved to see Chris Pendleton would not be his opponent but rather redshirt freshman Brandon Mason. Mason came close on some shots but Askren showed what he does best and scrambled out of them for three first period takedowns. Askren continued to dominate Mason from his feet and scored three more takedowns to give Missouri a major decision and tighten the score up at 17-7. It was 17-10 after the 184-pound match when Raymond Jordan scored a late takedown to beat OSU's Rusty Blackmon heading into the final two weight classes. The Cowboys proved to be too strong for the Tigers as defending national champions Jake Rosholt and Steve Mocco both recorded falls over out manned opponents. ALAMOSA, Colo. -- The nation's fifth-ranked University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos used a 165-pound pin and a 184-pound forfeit to propel them to a 25-15 non-conference wrestling dual meet win over the host and ninth-ranked Adams State College Grizzlies Friday evening in Plachy Hall. The highly-anticipated dual lived up to its billing as three matches went into overtime while seven of the nine wrestled matches featured wrestlers ranked in the top eight of their respective weight classes according to the Jan. 11 NCAA Division II National Wrestling Coaches Association Coaches Poll. UCO, visiting Plachy Hall for the first time since 1989, had a slight 6-4 advantage in match wins, including the forfeit, and improved to 9-2 in duals. The Grizzlies, who picked up two of the overtime victories, including a thrilling 133-pound pin from sophomore Raymond Dunning (Nashville, Tenn.), fell to 1-2. Both teams will compete in the 7-team Colorado Collegiate Invitational starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Grizzlies never led but challenged the highly touted and 6-time NCAA Division II National Champion Bronchos throughout the evening. UCO, boasting four returning All-Americans in the lineup, started the dual with an 11-0 major decision win by seventh-ranked Shea Timothy over ASC senior Dave Welanko (Clarkston, Mich.). Timothy, now 14-5 on the year, scored an early takedown and tilted Welanko, now 1-2, before riding him out for the entire first period. The Broncho junior, who finished seventh in the 157-pound bracket at last year's national championships, scored another takedown in the second period and followed that up with a third period near fall from the top position while holding a 5:49 advantage in riding time. The Grizzlies then closed within 4-3 as 157-pound senior Scott Cleve (Escondido, Calif.) overcame a 2-1 first period deficit to take a 4-3 lead over UCO's Jason Leavitt in the second period. Called for an illegal hold at the end of the period, Cleve went into the third tied at four before giving up an early escape. He then retook the lead with a takedown before Leavitt got out to force overtime. Cleve, a 2-time national championship qualifier, then improved to 3-3 on the year with his sudden victory takedown, which gave him an 8-6 win over the Broncho sophomore, who fell to 14-7. One of the most highly anticipated bouts of the night ended more than a minute early as UCO's Cort Petersen took a 7-1 lead after two periods before pinning ASC sophomore Evan Copeland (Las Cruces, N.M.) 44 seconds into the third period of the battle of returning All-Americans and nationally-ranked grapplers. Petersen, ranked fourth, improved to 19-6 while Copeland, ranked fifth, fell to 9-9 after wrestling for the first time in two weeks because of nagging injuries. Petersen had defeated Copeland 11-5 in a dual in UCO's Hamilton Field House last January but finished seventh at the national championships, four placers lower than Copeland. Up 10-3, the Bronchos went for more as junior Jared Hess overcame an early takedown by Grizzly junior James Reynolds (Monte Vista, Colo.), ranked seventh in the nation, to post a 7-3 win at 174 pounds. Taking a 3-2 lead after one with a first period takedown of his own, Hess kept Reynolds down throughout the second period before building a 4-2 lead with an escape in the third. Hess then scored another takedown and accumulated more than two minutes of riding time while allowing just one more escape to improve to 24-6. Reynolds, a returning national qualifier, fell to 10-12. UCO freshman Kenny Meredith then received a forfeit at 184 pounds because ASC's Josh Vialpando (Walsenburg, Colo.) suffered an injury in practice this week. That win allowed Meredith to improve to 17-13 as the Bronchos took a commanding 19-3 lead in the dual. The Grizzlies then closed the gap at 197 pounds as junior Casey Woodall (Morenci, Ariz.) picked up his 10th win of the season in one of the more interesting matches of the night. After a scoreless first period, Woodall scored the only reversal of the night against Heath Jolley to take a 2-0 lead before Jolley escaped to cut the gap in half. Jolley, now 17-10, then escaped to begin the third before a Woodall takedown in the final minute gave the Grizzly a 4-2 lead. Jolley cut the gap with his third escape before Woodall secured the 6-3 win with a final takedown to improve to 10-7. ASC senior heavyweight Heath Soderstrom (Englewood, Colo.) nearly pulled the upset of the night in the longest match of the dual. Escaping an apparent takedown by returning All-American and fourth-ranked Josh LeadingFox, Soderstrom scored one of his own at the edge of the mat to take a 2-0 lead before going into the second period with a 2-1 cushion. He then escaped early in the second to go up 3-1 before LeadingFox tied the match with an escape and stalling point in the third. After a scoreless sudden victory period, Soderstrom escaped just six seconds into the first 30-second tiebreaking period before LeadingFox got out eight seconds into the second. The two wrestlers then went into a second 1-minute sudden-victory period, in which LeadingFox claimed an 6-4 win to improve to 15-5. Soderstrom, a returning national qualifier, fell to 9-10. Down 22-6, the Grizzlies closed the gap again as senior Rob McCabe, won his fourth straight match, with a 6-2 decision over UCO sophomore Shane Caruthers at 125 pounds. McCabe scored the only takedown of the first period and built up more than two minutes of riding time. Caruthers then chose to remain neutral but could do nothing against the eighth-ranked Grizzly in the second two minutes. McCabe, who finished fourth at last year's national championships, then chose the neutral position to begin the third stanza before Caruthers tied the match with his only takedown. McCabe quickly got out and scored a match-clinching takedown later in the period improving to 12-8 overall. Caruthers fell to 12-7. McCabe had defeated Caruthers by the same 6-2 margin in last year's dual. The unquestioned match of the night then came at 133 pounds as Dunning and fifth-ranked Earl Jones battled to a scoreless tie through seven minutes. Jones, who wrestles with just one full leg, was able to ride Dunning for the entire two minutes of the second period before Dunning was able to do the same in the third. Going to the sudden victory period, Dunning got a takedown and was then able to pick up his team-leading fourth pin of the year in the ensuing flurry as the Grizzlies claimed three extra team points as they closed to within 22-15. Dunning, who finished sixth in the nation last year, improved to 14-6 while Jones, a 2-time National Junior College Champion while at Labette (Kan.) Community College fell to 19-6. UCO sophomore Kyle Evans, ranked second in the nation after a sixth place finish at last year's national championships, then posted a 6-4 win over 2002 All-American Brian Pitts (Rio Rancho, N.M.) in the 141-pound finale. Evans, now 22-4, took the opening 2-0 lead before Pitts came back to take a 3-2 lead after one with an escape and takedown of his own. Evans scored the only points of the second period on an escape and takedown to go up 5-3 before trading an escape for a riding time point in the third to close out UCO's win. Each team had 11 takedowns in the match while the Bronchos picked up all three near falls of the dual.

Stanford, Calif. -- Stanford (4-3, 1-0 Pac-10) posted a 27-14 victory over Cal State Bakersfield (2-4, 1-2 Pac-10) tonight in the Ford Center. It is the Cardinal's third win ever over the Roadrunners and the first since the 2001-02 season. "We're very happy," commented Stanford head coach Kerry McCoy after the dual. "This was a very good way to start the Pac-10 season, and now we have to get ready for Fullerton on Monday." The Cardinal started the night with six straight wins, including two pins to mount a 24-0 lead. In each of the seven Stanford victories tonight, the Cardinal wrestler came out strong, scoring the first takedown of the bout. The match started at 149 pounds, where Stanford sophomore Josh Zupancic captured a 10-4 victory over Bakersfield's Brandon Doyle. Scott Loescher was the next Cardinal wrestler on the mat, but he did not stay out for very long, pinning Daniel Atondo at the 2:20 mark. Next up were Ray Blake and Brian Busby at 165 pounds. Busby, the fourth-ranked wrestler in the Pac-10 was looking to defend his spot against Blake, the fifth-ranked wrestler in the conference. But the Cardinal co-captain wanted to win his 31st match of the year tonight and scored three takedowns and captured riding time to earn the 7-5 victory. At 174 pounds, Luke Feist took an early lead over Garth Wara, but the Runners knotted the bout at 2-2 in the second period. Feist chose to start the third period on bottom and quickly escaped to take a 3-2 lead with riding time still in his favor. Feist added a takedown and secured the 6-2 victory. Stanford co-captain Ryan Hagen kept the Cardinal momentum alive, winning his first dual match of the year after an early season injury delayed his training. Hagen scored early in the first and picked up back points to take a 4-0 lead and build over two and a half minutes of riding time. He started the second period on top and rode Brandon Ceremello long enough to guarantee his bonus point. In the third period, Hagen added an escape and captured a 6-3 victory. At 197 pounds, junior Ian Bork built up a 7-1 lead in the first period and then started on top in the second. Bakersfield's Ryan Bergman picked up a reversal, but Bork did not relent and scored a reversal of his own en route to pinning Bergman at the 4:44 mark. The Roadrunners got their first win of the night at heavyweight, as Eric Parker notched his 19th win of the season, but Stanford rebounded with a 7-1 decision from ninth-ranked Tanner Gardner at 125 pounds. The win is the 25th of the season for Gardner, and the sophomore improves to 6-1 on the year in dual matches. Bakersfield ended the night with a pair of wins at 133 and 141. Stanford will be back on the mat in three days, as the Cardinal hosts Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. on Monday night in Burnham Pavilion. The top-ranked Golden Gopher wrestling team (14-0, 2-0) defeated No. 7 Iowa (7-4, 1 -1), 25-9 in front of 6,695 fans on Sunday afternoon at Williams Arena. It is the biggest win for Minnesota over the Hawkeyes since a 23-6 victory in 1941. The Golden Gophers defeated four higher ranked wrestlers highlighted by true freshman Dustin Schlatter's 4-1 win over top-ranked Ty Eustice at 149 pounds. The Hawkeyes won their first of three matches at 125 pounds as Lucas Magnani defeated Travis Lang, 9-5. Magnani broke a scoreless tie with a takedown with seven seconds to go in the first period. Lang took a 4-2 lead in the second period, but Magnani countered with a reversal. He added two more third period takedowns in the win. From there, it was all Minnesota. Sophomore All-American Mack Reiter earned a 10-2 major decision against Daniel Dennis at 133 pounds. Reiter dominated the senior from St. Paul, Minn. Dennis was penalized for stalling on three separate occasions. Reiter improved to 21-2 on the year. At 141 pounds, Manuel Rivera defeated Alex Tsirtsis, 4-3 (photo courtesy of TheGuillotine.com).141 pounds marked the first of four upsets as 19th-ranked Manuel Rivera defeated No. 12 Alex Tsirtsis, 4-3.With the match tied at two, Rivera scored the deciding takedown 39 seconds into the third period. Tsirtsis cut the lead to 4-3 with an escape, but Rivera held on for the win. He is now 20-9 on the year. Schlatter followed with his second victory over a top-ranked wrestler in the past two weeks. Ranked second in the country, Schlatter dominated Eustice as he rode him the entire second period. In the third, Schlatter took a 1-0 lead with an escape and then scored a takedown moments later. He finished with nearly two minutes of riding time as he improved to 28-1 on the year. Schlatter's older brother, C.P., then defeated fifth-ranked Joe Johnston, 12-7, at 157 pounds. Johnston defeated Schlatter twice last season. With Johnston leading 7-6, Schlatter took the lead for a good with a takedown near the edge of the mat. He also earned a three-point near fall as time expired. Schlatter is now 25-4 on the season. Following intermission, Minnesota extended its lead to 19-3 as 10th-ranked Matt Nagel defeated Eric Luedke, 8-3, at 165 pounds. Nagel was never threatened as he took a 4-1 first-period lead. He finished with 2:16 in riding time. Nagel is now 21-6 on the year. Iowa cut the lead to 19-6 as fourth-ranked Mark Perry returned from injury to defeat No. 8 Gabriel Dretsch, 6-2, at 174 pounds. Following a takedown by Perry, the pair traded reversals. After Dretsch rode Perry the entire second period, Perry put the match away with a takedown 45 seconds into the third period. Minnesota got back on track as ninth-ranked Roger Kish upset No. 6 Paul Bradley, 4-1, at 184 pounds. Bradley had won the previous two meetings between the duo. Kish led throughout as he took a 2-0 lead with a takedown just seven seconds into the match. The pair traded escapes in the second and third periods. Kish finished with 1:14 in riding time as he improved to 24-3 on the year. After Iowa's Dan Erekson defeated Mitch Kuhlman, 6-3, at 197 pounds, top-ranked heavyweight Cole Konrad dominated sixth-ranked Matt Fields at heavyweight. Konrad led 10-1 in the third period, but on a takedown, Fields injured his knee and was unable to finish the match. Minnesota was awarded six points for the injury default. Konrad remains unbeaten with a 26-0 record. "We told our guys they had to wrestle with more emotion than did on Friday (against Northwestern)," head coach J Robinson. "To their credit, they showed up ready to go today. I thought Manuel's win gave us a spark. That gave Dustin a lift and then Dustin gave C.P. a lift. We weren't favored to win a lot of these matches." The Golden Gophers will hit the road next weekend for a pair of Big Ten dual meets. Minnesota will face Ohio State on Friday night and then meet No. 12 Penn State on Sunday afternoon. STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State rebounded from a tough loss to Minnesota by dominating 20th-ranked Cal Poly, 36-8, and Fresno State, 44-3, in front of 3,367 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena on Friday night. Coleman Scott started the double dual with a technical fall in the first match of the night. It was all OSU after that as the Cowboys won 14 of the 17 matches wrestled. "It was hard to tell how we responded," head coach John Smith said afterward. "I can give you that answer after we wrestle Missouri on Sunday. I did like the effort from Nathan Morgan and Zack Esposito wrestling better. I also like the fact that we scored bonus points and got to use different wrestlers. It was good to see Ethan Kyle get a win tonight." The highlight of the evening came in just the second match of the night when OSU's fourth-ranked Morgan met high school teammate third-ranked Darrell Vasquez of Cal Poly. Morgan got on the board first with a takedown in the first period. Morgan's lead was 3-1 heading into the third period. Morgan was aggressive from the top position riding Vasquez for much of the third period to assure him of a riding time point. With eight seconds left in the match, Vasquez escaped and got a takedown which sent the match into overtime. It was Morgan who showed the superior takedown skills in the sudden victory period by shooting a double leg takedown and securing the victory with 15 seconds left in the period. "He (Morgan) has been solid for us," Smith said. "This is just a rollover from the way he has been wrestling. Obviously, he let up with 10 seconds left, but it would have been easy to drop your head in overtime. He didn't and picked up the takedown to win the match. It was pleasing to see." Esposito put the Cowboys up 14-4 in the dual with Cal Poly with a first period fall over Jeff Owens. Kevin Ward and Johny Hendricks both followed with major decisions and Brandon Mason added a technical fall in 3:59 to put the Cowboys up 27-4. Jack Jensen added a decision and Steve Mocco closed out the dual with a fall to make the final score 36-8 over Cal Poly. The dual with Fresno State was uneventful as the Bulldogs forfeited three matches to Oklahoma State. Zack Esposito and Jake Rosholt recorded falls as OSU cruised to a 44-3 dual victory over Fresno State. It was the most dual points the Cowboys had scored this season. The Cowboys will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Columbia, Mo., to wrestle Missouri at 2 p.m. The dual will be televised live by CSTV or can be heard via the internet at okstate.com. ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio wrestling team lost a Mid-American Conference dual to No. 23 Northern Illinois 29-9 Friday evening in the Convocation Center. The Bobcats (5-5, 1-1 MAC) got decisions from Terry Jackson at 133 pounds, Jake Frerichs at 157 and Brian Cesear at 184 for their nine points in the meet. The Huskies (5-4, 2-0 MAC) got wins from all five of their nationally ranked wrestlers - #19 Joe Sapp at heavyweight, #10 Pat Castillo at 125, #11 Josh Wooton at 141, #13 Mike Grimes at 149 and #20 Danny Burk at 174 - in addition to a pair of victories by Derick Hunsinger at 197 and Johnny Galloway at 165. The meet started with a 7-5 decision by Hunsinger over Ohio's Nick Terbay who was competing for the first time since injuring his knee on Dec. 29 and undergoing surgery on Jan. 4. The Bobcat junior from Dayton, Ohio, scored an early takedown and was leading 4-2 following a second-period escape but a three-point near fall in the third period sealed his defeat. "Nick went out there and took a bunch of shot early but got tired and ran out of gas," said Ohio head coach Joel Greenlee about his 197-pounder. "I'll take the blame on that one because we should have wrestled Larry (Reichard). I thought Nick had a good week of practice and maybe knee-wise he was ready to go out there but conditioning-wise he wasn't." In a close heavyweight bout, Sapp registered the first points with a reversal of Bobcat junior Marcus Adelman with only six seconds remaining in the second period. Adelman, the preseason MAC heavyweight favorite from Alliance, Ohio, managed an escape in the third period but a takedown by Sapp with 11 seconds left gave the 19th-ranked heavyweight in the country a 4-1 victory. At 125 pounds, Castillo showed why he is ranked 10th in the nation by scoring a 13-4 major decision over Ohio sophomore Caleb Metcalf (Waterville, Ohio). The Huskie sophomore was leading 5-0 before performing a takedown-and-release routine for the duration of the third period. The Bobcats finally got on the board with a 2-0 decision by Jackson at 133 pounds. After a scoreless first period, the redshirt freshman from Uhrichsville, Ohio, managed to ride NIU junior Andy Hiatt for the entire second period. An escape early in the third period gave him his first point and riding time resulted in a 2-0 decision. "I knew going into the match that (Hiatt) was tough because he placed at Midlands but I just went out there and got in his face and wrestled my match," said Jackson, who improved to 7-4 this season, including 5-0 in duals and 2-0 in the conference. "I planned on beating him on my feet but unfortunately I didn't get a takedown in the first period. In the second period, I just rode him out, stayed tough on him and beat him mentally." At 141 pounds, Wooton took it to Ohio redshirt freshman Albert Madsen (Strongsville, Ohio). The defending MAC champ led 8-1 following a second-period reversal and two-point near fall. He recorded two more takedowns in the third for the eventual 14-2 major decision. Grimes followed that up with another major decision for the Huskies in the next match. In a feisty contest against Bobcat junior Aaron Gomoll (Bay Village, Ohio), the 13th-ranked 149-pounder led 5-0 before Gomoll scored an escape late in the second period. A series of takedowns and releases in the third resulted in the 12-4 final score. In his first match in exactly six weeks, Frerichs bounced back from a knee injury to defeat Huskie 157-pounder Kalen Knull. The Ohio redshirt freshman from Uniontown, Ohio, used a three-point near fall in the second period and a reversal early in the third to cruise to a 6-2 decision. "It felt really good to be back on the mat," said Frerichs, who upped his record to 8-3 and 6-1 in duals. "I thought I should have got a takedown in the first period but every shot I hit was out of bounds. I gave up a stupid reversal at the very end but I've been out for so long that I was just happy to be back on the mat." At 165 pounds, Bobcat true freshman Kent Smith (Bowling Green, Ohio) suffered a 21-6 technical fall to Galloway, who earned the bonus points with a late takedown, two-point near fall and riding time. In Ohio's final shot at defeating one of NIU's ranked wrestlers, sophomore 174-pounder Ryan Knapp (McConnelsville, Ohio) recorded an early takedown and was tied with Burk at 4-4 in the second period when both grapplers took a shot at the same time and knocked heads. The collision opened a cut above Knapp's right eye that required stitches. After waiting for over 15 minutes to see if the procedure could be performed just off the mat, Greenlee decided to have Knapp injury default when swelling became obvious. "Right above his eyebrow, he split about a three-inch gash in his head," Greenlee said about the injury. "It was pretty deep but I thought if we could stitch it up right away, he could wrestle. After about 10 minutes, though, it became too sore and swollen." In the night's final match, Cesear improved his record to 15-8 and 8-2 in duals with a 6-3 decision over Huskie 184-pounder Nick McClone. The junior from Amherst, Ohio, scored an early takedown but gave up a reversal late in the first period. After an illegal hold call gave him a 3-2 lead in the second period, Cesear registered an escape and takedown in the third to pull out the win. After jumping from No. 7 to No. 2 in the rankings this past week, true freshman Dustin Schlatter put on a clinic in a 17-1 technical fall against Jimmy Kim at 149 pounds. Schlatter needed just six seconds to take a 2-0 lead with a takedown. He then scored three near falls to take an 11-0 first-period lead. Schlatter added two more takedowns in the second to end the match in 4:41. He is now 27-1 on the year and will face top-ranked Ty Eustice of Iowa on Sunday afternoon. Schlatter's older brother, C.P., followed with a 9-4 decision against Greg Hagel at 157 pounds. Schlatter led 4-1 in the first period, but Hagel cut the lead to one with a reversal. Schlatter responded with a second-period takedown to collect the win. He is now 24-4 on the year. Following intermission, senior Matt Nagel made the score 18-3 with a 3-1 decision against 17th-ranked Will Durkee at 165 pounds. Nagel's first-period takedown held up as he improved to 20-6 on the year and 8-5 in duals. The Wildcats narrowed the gap to 18-7 as second-ranked Jake Herbert collected a 13-3 major decision against eighth-ranked Gabriel Dretsch at 174 pounds. In the third period, Tamillow was penalized a pair of points for clasping his hands. With the win, Kish improved to 23-3 overall and 10-3 in duals. After Northwestern's Matt Delguyd defeated Justin Bronson, 13-2 at 197 pounds, top- ranked heavyweight Cole Konrad defeated ninth-ranked Dustin Fox, 4-0. Konrad's first- period takedown proved to be the difference as he improved to 25-0 on the year. Konrad has now won 54 of his last 55 matches.
