Thanks for that info, CHROMEBIRD! I saw a listing of salaries last year for the top guys around that range, but I couldn't remember for sure.

Now that I'm hooked on Sumo, they've taken away my supply. Cold chills. Sweat. Itching. Wild eyes. It seems that NattoSumo has been completely scrubbed from YouTube and Twitter. Anybody with suggestions? To get me through the morning, I watched a replay of the Kirishima versus Hokutofuji match from yesterday. Kirishima is an Ozeki (2nd-highest rank) while Hokutofuji is the guy I call the Chubby Accountant. In the match, you can see the violence inherent in the system, as face slaps and head-butting are legal. Additionally, at the end of the match, the Gyoji (ref) gives a stack of envelopes containing cash to the winner (at 4:38). I'm not sure. I know each of the upper ranks will get something akin to a base pay, and then there are incentive payments. It's certainly not USA baseball or football money. Haha! I have no idea if they get much from endorsements. Also, at the end of many of the upper division matches (like those in the video above), the gyoji (ref) will give the winner a stack of envelopes containing money. It's supposedly not much in each envelope, but some of those stacks can be pretty big. And, @gimpeltf, I've seen a few videos about their diets, and they eat like dinosaurs. Then, when they retire, many shrink by a hundred pounds or more.

Despite a Yokozuna out with injury, and despite the loss to surgery of the impudent upstart Hakuoho (who almost won the last tournament as a complete rookie), the September basho started out very strong with a loud crowd in Tokyo. There are a number of storylines that provide interest. The top storyline has to be the two Ozekis (second-highest rank below Yokozuna) who are kadoban. That means they have to obtain a winning record in their 15 matches or lose their lofty rank. This is day three, and they have both lost a match. Oh my! They are each 2-1. Another major story is the rise of Hokutofuji. This fellow looks like a chubby accountant, but he is the ultimate pro. In fact, he reminds me of a slick shortstop with his crisp, clean movements (even in his pre-match routine). He is now 3-0, and he is responsible for defeating the two Ozekis. Hokutofuji challenged for the title during the last basho, and he is only looking stronger. A story that I'm very interested in is my favorite wrestler Hoshoryu, also known as the Golden Boy. He is another Ozeki, and he's already lost twice in three bouts! Not optimal. There has been an Ozeki curse for some time now, and I hope that Golden Boy doesn't fall under its spell. And finally, if you follow sumo or have read the reports here about the last tournament, you know that a fellow going by the name of NattoSumo has been putting the tournaments up on YouTube even though they are the property of the Japanese Sumo Federation and the Japanese TV giant NHK. Well, he's already had a couple videos removed in the last few days, so he's changed his name to JustinBeiberwrestling, apparently because YouTube would never ban Justin Beiber. These are today's matches, which went on YouTube a few hours ago. The video might not last long. Haha! That's Golden Boy, the Mongolian Ozeki in the picture. I also wanted to give you an action shot at 7:50 of the video showing the excitement of sumo. What you see below is Sadanoumi pushing Kotoshoho off of the elevated ring. Kotoshoho is flying out, while Sadanoumi is simply flying:

Thanks for posting. Cheers for that! As for hiding it like this, **** the UWW. Just **** them! They have had an official entries link on their front page, and instead of updating that like they've done the past week or two, they chose to back door the ******* Russians. I'm furious. But a reminder: The IRTC, Coach Medlin and Zane Richards have a great relationship with Russian wrestlers and coaches. I'm sure they hoped that they would be allowed entry. I am not an official anything when it comes to the ILLINI or IRTC.

Agreed. I was going to explode but went to the UWW site, and there are zero Russians added to the official entrants list. Additionally, in the "news" section of the website, there's no mention of any Russian additions or any final disposition of the Russian question. If it comes out that UWW didn't update their entries (like they have for other reasons i.e. Gable Steveson) because they wanted to avoid protests before Worlds, then I will have a life-long grudge against the organization. I can't believe they'd slip the Russians in by the back door, though, as that would be so ******* cowardly.

Our Moneyball look at the chief competition for Zane Richards at 57 kg is up at The ILLINI Wrestling Blog and Forum and Beyond here. Zelimkhan Abakarov and Zavur Uguev are takedown specialists who rarely turn anybody who's any good. Rei Higuchi has a small takedown repertoire, and, frankly, his attempts seem pretty slow, but he's dynamite with the leglaces and leg turks. All of these guys are experts at interlocking fingers. Finally, we've included a special UWW/Russia section. What the **** is going on? There's still no definitive word on that front, but we've compiled some evidence.

There's some additional clarity on the situation in the tweet attached below. Sidakov, Sadulaev and Uguev attended a large rally in Russia in support of the Special Military Operation in Ukraine. That should end the matter. On top of that, there's the stupidity of the President of the Russian Wrestling Federation telling reporters this: “If they want to see us in the Olympics as a team of refugees, we have to go to Paris in tanks. There’s no other option,” Mamiashvili told RIA Novosti Sport, a state-owned Russian news media.

Just found an article stating that the Ukrainian parliament sanctioned a total of 55 athletes "for showing support for the war." This is the passage relevant to wrestling: "Eight wrestlers feature in the form of Roman Vlasov, Musa Evloev, Alexander Karelin, Abdulrashid Sadulaev, Zaurbek Sidakov, Artur Taimazov, Dzambolat Tedeev and Zaur Uguev." Was the information that informed the decision of the Ukrainian parliament made available to UWW? Did the UWW investigation seek out and include this information?

Sidakov is for certain. He wrestles for the actual RUSSIAN ARMY club. As for the others, the information needs additional confirmation or proof contrary in my mind. Can you provide either?

Yet, the Russian athletes weren't included on the list of entrants. And while that list has been amended in the case of Gable Steveson, it hasn't been amended for any of the Russian freestylers. I did a little more digging and found that Sidakov wrestles for Central Sports Club of the Armed Forces (CSKA). It's on his Wikipedia page. Years ago, he won a Military World Championship. On the other hand, Sadulaev and Uguev don't belong to a club run by the Russian army. However, there is this: "Against this background, the United World of Wrestling (UWW) listed athletes Zavur Uguev, Zaurbek Sidakov and Abdulrashid Sadulaev among athletes admitted to wrestling competitions, registering them as neutral athletes. Zavur Uguev (ensign) and Abdulrashid Sadulaev (junior lieutenant) are members of the Russian Guard, and Zaurbek Sidakov is a sergeant of the Russian Armed Forces." This article is from back in August, and it is on a website of uncertain legitimacy. Moreover, it doesn't explain how these athletes were "admitted to wrestling competitions" and yet left off the official list of entrants. So, still kinda murky. We do know that at least those three have connections to the Russian military.

Corby is reporting this on Twitter just now: UWW has posted an updated participation list for Worlds. Gable is no longer listed. Lucas Davison is listed at 125 kg. No 57 Uguev, 74 Sidakov or 97 Sadulaev listed for Russia . Also no 86 Kurugliev (injury) I have asked him where he got this information, as there is nothing I can find on the UWW or USA Wrestling websites or their Twitter feeds. If this is true, then there will be major repercussions. There needs to be some resolution of this matter. I had sent a tweet to UWW just a few minutes before Corby's that read as follows:

Although the topic may have seemed frivolous to some, it has now taken a deadly serious turn. We at The ILLINI Wrestling Blog and Forum and Beyond have officially petitioned the Mayor of Buffalo, the Honorable Byron Brown, for a city-wide proclamation heralding November 1, 2023 as National Singlet Day. As brother @bnwtwg has noted, the Freestyle preseeds are out for the World Championships. I personally believe that the best three wrestlers at the weight who will be wrestling in Belgrade are not included in UWW's seeds. Top four if you include Thomas Gilman. There is certainly a case for Abakarov being in the top four, though. He's seeded #2 and deserves it as returning World Champion. The wrestlers not included in the top eight seeds are Zavur Uguev of Russia, Rei Higuchi of Japan and Zane Richards. There's an interview of Higuchi posted on the UWW website that I think is pretty revealing. In my mind, he was going over his top threats. He had this to say: "But a lot has changed at 57kg since he last wrestled internationally at this weight class. Most of the wrestlers have changed weight classes or have retired. Zaur UGUEV is the defending Olympic champion. Zelimkhan ABAKAROV (ALB) is the world champion. Two youngsters are champions in Europe and Asia. Iran has lost its stronghold on the lightest weight. But Higuchi is updated. 'I don't care about the World Championships,' Higuchi says. 'I watched Final X and Zain [sp] RICHARDS (USA) winning it. AMAN (IND), Abakarov, Uguev, Aliabbas RZAZADE (AZE). I watched them all.'” Except for Rzazade, but including Higuchi himself, I think that his list contains the names of everybody who can win the Gold Medal. So excite!

This is almost exactly my story, except I only had to drop to 155.

This is a good time to talk about this ... before the kids start losing weight for the high school and college seasons. I had major problems making 155 my sophomore year in high school. No more diets for me after that! Too many nightmares.

That was not indicated. All that that human said was what I quoted. I wrestled heavyweight in college even though I weighed 190 to 200 at most. I could still lose 9 pounds in an afternoon if I wore plastics. What the NCAA does regarding weight loss is pretty solid in my mind, but I'd like to hear from people who have recent involvement in the process. What the UFC does is insane, and I think somebody is going to die because of it. Still, probably better than the Subway diet.
