What happens next year for Cornell Seniors?
jdalu75 replied to feet2back's topic in College Wrestling
Fernandes was the only one listed on the Cornell roster in 2020-21. So right there that suggests that if any of them move on, he's the one. Cardenas entered the NCAA transfer portal, as a graduate student, on August 21. So right there that suggests that if, yada, yada. Ramirez is, as BigRedFan posted, the only one of the four listed as a junior on the current Cornell roster. So right there that suggests that if any of them stay another year, he's the one. Now that those situations have been straightened out, what happens with Foca is anyone's guess. -
Another #1 Ranked 125 pounder losses to a HS kid

Luke was wrestling unattached, so maybe the Lehigh staff wasn't permitted to consult with him. My advice, in a situation like that, is not to look in the rearview mirror. -

It's more impressive than that. Forrest is a sophomore. Class of 2026. I was one of those on the Lehigh Sports Forum insisting that Stanich should have med forfeited in the finals. Had he won, he would have gained nothing, except to prove that he hadn't ducked a high schooler -- in essence, winning a lot of flame and air (Man of La Mancha reference). Had he been injured .... well, at least his redshirt hasn't been blown for this season, so he'd still have four seasons available to him. But losing -- Forrest is now the winter favorite for an NCAA title in 2027, and if Stanich finishes in the top few at NCAAs then the sports world knows that a high school kid could likely beat the best in college. -
So is the NFL going to cancel the halftime show they have planned and let Taylor do it? They could double their ticket prices.
-
At least it didn't cost Brown the dual. In 1999-2000, Army and Navy wrestled to a 16-16 draw. I'm pretty certain one of the Army wrestlers threw a fit after his loss and cost his team a point. How'd you have liked to be that wrestler on the ride back to the Point from Annapolis?
-
Sounds like those two teams are just going to love competing in a six-team Ivy tournament going forward.
-
True enough. But why then would you enter the portal before the window opens?
-
WS calls it "Unofficial Transfer Portal". My guess is that they're posting potential transfers, maybe guys who have dropped off rosters prematurely. I don't think the official portal opens for wrestling until March.
-
Some teams seem to be trying to limit their wrestlers' bout totals. I've heard coaches complain about the number of unrostered wrestlers entering open tournaments; if their guys wrestle, they want the bouts to count towards conference seeding and NCAA qualification. IMO, anyway.

Limiting the number of matches - any negative consequences?
jdalu75 replied to AgaveMaria's topic in College Wrestling
Ferere and Day are a lot better than average. The miracle is that Hendrickson faced six Div I opponents at F&M, not a bunch of prep and RTC guys. All six bouts count for him. -
The earlier version (overwritten by the update) had the cutoff date as Feb 18th. It was adjusted by a week.

Blind Athletes - which sports offer opportunity?

Fishing has competitive events, right? I would think sight is helpful but optional. -

Sounds like what's got the Princess of Wales in the hospital ....

That's an awful lot of matches to leave out of today's Coaches' Poll rankings, don'cha think?
-
That's a relief.

Would streamline matters if we had only one thread on this issue.

So ...... are they going to continue this practice and not count the results of the final duals weekend?
-
Begs the question: Why?

Penn State wrestled Michigan State yesterday. WrestleStat shows Starocci at 6-0, Truax at 7-1, Brooks at 8-0, and Kerkvliet at 7-0. Eight matches at weight are needed for a CP ranking, so it appears that Truax and Brooks qualify. So it appears that the coaches didn't vote on rankings in the middle of the night, and Sunday's results (at least) weren't counted. In previous years the rankings were released on Thursdays; I was surprised to see them this morning. There's a chance we see revised rankings later in the week.

Check again, though I could be wrong. They originally used last year's calendar and scheduled the final day of results for tournament qualification a week early, on 2/18/2024. A couple of weeks ago the schedule was modified and now shows 2/25/2024 as the final results date. Everything backs up from that date. The original grid was overwritten: https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/championships/sports/wrestling/d1/men/2023-24D1MWR_QualifierAllocationCriteria.pdf These are the dates that I'm using -- Thu, Jan. 25th: First Coaches' Panel (CP) Rankings released Sat, Jan. 27th: Beginning of 30-day period for 3rd CP Rankings Thu, Feb. 15th: Second CP, first Rating Percentage Index (RPI) Rankings released Sun, Feb. 25th: End of 30-day period for 3rd CP Rankings; pre-allocated spots based on matches through this date Thu, Feb. 29th: Third CP, second RPI, NCAA pre-allocated spots announced F/S, Mar. 8th-9th: EIWA tournament Thu, Mar. 14th: At-Large bids released (on or before this date) Thu, Mar. 14th: NCAA Brackets posted; Fourth CP, third RPI released Thu, Mar. 21st: Replacement deadline -- one alternate at each weight class on standby at weigh-ins (two alternates are selected in each weight class) T/F/S, Mar. 21st-23rd: NCAA tournament The rankings released on Mar. 14th will be used to determine the At-Large bids.

Four times, but the 4th is after conference tournaments so nobody notices that one. The 2nd one is in mid-February. But I'm kind of expecting that we'll see a revised 1st set in a day or two -- Penn State had two upperweights wrestle their 8th match yesterday but they're not ranked, which means yesterday's results weren't counted. There's a reason that these rankings have been released on Thursdays in the past; gives time for the coaches to look at all the results.

If you want more falls, then falls need to be worth more. So a fall is worth 6, a tech fall is worth 4, there is no major (too easy with 3-point TDs), and a decision is worth 3.
-
Beard beat Stout by major, 18-8, at the Princeton Open in November; then tech falled him at Midlands. Beat DePrez by MD last Friday, 12-1. Beat Cardenas 10-3 the following afternoon. The matches will be tougher for the other guys.

BS. MS in 1980, after working three years. When I was younger than some guys still wrestling.
