  2. As Fargo-week winds down, we have a newly-minted set of Junior freestyle national champions to add to the list of all-time greats in our sport. 3. On Wednesday, Team Pennsylvania captured its first Junior Men’s Freestyle title since 2016. By most metrics, fans and media members alike can universally agree that Pennsylvania is the “best” state for wrestling. Collegiate accolades and depth, high school performance and rankings-wise, Pennsylvania is consistently number one. You have to start calculating per-capita population numbers to start to find a way to start knocking PA. The one exception, of late, for Pennsylvania, has been the Junior division at Fargo (and National Duals). It seems as if the mentality has been that Pennsylvania brings a strong team to the U16 division, they make a name for themselves (or reaffirm rankings) and then they don’t necessarily “need” to come back to Fargo. Winning/placing at the PA State Tournament and in-season tournaments provide enough competition and exposure for college coaches to take notice. Now, the argument from Pennsylvania fans has been, “Well, we didn’t bring our best team.” While it’s true, it’s kind of a lame retort as other states brought strong squads. This year we don’t need to have the “didn’t bring our best team” debate as Pennsylvania was able to win the Junior freestyle title. How were they able to do it? It was a total team effort. Most of the time, your stars determine large, major tournaments. This time, Pennsylvania had a pair of champions, which is always a great number for a tournament of Fargo’s caliber. At the same time, Illinois and Iowa matched that number. All three paled in comparison to runner-up Wisconsin, who had five! Wisconsin had six total finalists, which was double Pennsylvania and Illinois’ total. Where Pennsylvania separated itself from the rest of the was in the consolations. After their six finalists, Wisconsin only had two other All-Americans. Third place Oklahoma had ten total AA’s. Pennsylvania finished with 19. Drilling down even further, the tournament was won (or could have been lost) in the Round of 12 or the bloodround. Pennsylvania was lights out in the all-important, make-or-break, All-American round. Its wrestlers went 13-2 in the bloodround, which is a remarkable number no matter the tournament or age group. It's perhaps the most pressure-filled set of matches, Pennsylvania responded in a ridiculously great fashion. Taking it a step further, of those two losses in the bloodround, one came in a match that featured two wrestlers from Team Pennsylvania competing against each other. It was at 220 lbs when Calvin Lachman downed Zach Evans via disqualification. Those consolation wins, combined with titles from Jax Forrest and Vince Bouzakis, gave the unofficial “best wrestling state” an official title for the summer of 2023. It should be noted that Pennsylvania’s 16U boys and girls team both captured titles in Fargo. The boys title was the third consecutive, while the girls title was the first of any kind, at any age. With girls high school wrestling now officially sanctioned in Pennsylvania, I’d expect that trend to continue for PA girls. Below are the Junior freestyle All-Americans for Pennsylvania’s national championship team. Champions 126: Jax Forrest (Bishop McCort) - Class of 2026 152: Vince Bouzakis (Wyoming Seminary) - Class of 2025 Runner-Up 113: Aaron Seidel (Northern Lebanon) - Class of 2025 Third Place 145: Pierson Manville (State College) - Class of 2024 170: Adam Waters (Faith Christian Academy) - Class of 2026 Fourth Place 100: Kole Davidheiser (The Hill School) - Class of 2026 113: Davis Motyka (Wyoming Seminary) - Class of 2024 120: Nathan Desmond (Bethlehem Catholic/Wyoming Seminary) - Class of 2025 Fifth Place 132: Dalton Perry (Central Mountain) - Class of 2025 170: Holden Garcia (Notre Dame-Green Pond) - Class of 2023 195: Tucker Hogan (Daniel Boone) - Class of 2024 285: Nick Pavlechko (State College) - Class of 2024 Sixth Place 100: Alexander Diaz (Council Rock North) - Class of 2023 152: Collin Gaj (Quakertown) - Class of 2025 160: Nick Kunstek (Pottsville) - Class of 2024 Seventh Place 120: Gauge Botero (Faith Christian Academy) - Class of 2025 195: Dillon Bechtold (Owen J. Roberts) - Class of 2024 132: Tahir Parkins (Nazareth) - Class of 2025 Eighth Place 220: Calvin Lachman (Quakertown) - Class of 2024 Round of 12 113: Ayden Smith (Notre Dame-Green Pond) - Class of 2025 220: Zachary Evans (Chambersburg) - Class of 2023
  4. Leaders and Legends was the name of the Divisions that the B1G chose to represent the two halves of their football conference. With teams being added, and conference expansion being a big thing, it appears these two Divisions are about to be shuffled around and we have the risk of losing the names of the Divisions. I aim to have them live on in my coverage of the B1G. First of all, with emerging Badger leader Dean Hamiti. I remember Dean Hamiti immediately jumping onto the scene two years ago for the Badgers at 165. It was interesting because he appeared to be the brown-haired version of the tall, thin, 165 that they had previously. This is not meant to be a negative comment towards either of those athletes so please don’t read it with any hidden agenda. Simply remarking on their physical resemblance and that they both wrestled for the University of Wisconsin. That being said, Dean quickly had everyone learn his name, and distinguish himself as his own person and a presence on the National scene at that weight. Another place where Dean had a quick and lasting impact, was within his own wrestling room. After placing sixth in the country at 165 as a freshman, Dean was named one of the captains in just his sophomore season with Wisconsin. Dean backed that preseason honor up by winning a B1G Title and getting back on the podium at 165 in what was arguably the deepest weight class in the country. With Dean entering this third season with the Badgers, and transitioning into those “upperclassmen” years, I wanted the chance to talk with Dean about what being a leader means to him. We also talk about who has had an impact on him in his career, as a coach and a teammate. Also, I wasn’t going to finish this conversation without talking about competing in the B1G and his style. I was a captain of my high school team as a senior (one of three captains, nbd), and I remember talking with my coach and co-captains about what that meant. I was always a lead-by-example sort of a guy, and I was going to go to all of the optional workouts, pick people up to make it to those workouts and drop them off if they needed rides. It was just how I lead. I had never considered other ways to have an impact on my team and to help everyone get better. So since then, I’ve always enjoyed learning about how other people can have impacts (positively or negatively in some cases) on the people they’re around. Having and cultivating leadership skills is not as common as I would have thought growing up, so I feel there’s a responsibility to use them for good. It turns out Spider-Man’s uncle was right. With great power comes great responsibility. So back to Dean. After introducing him to why I wanted to do this, I got right into it and asked him about the best leader he has been around in his career. “Definitely Coach (Jon) Reader. He’s awesome, has a great attitude, he’s always there when you need him, and he brings his full effort every day. He supports us through anything, not just wrestling. He’s one of the best leaders I’ve had throughout my career.” This is no surprise to me, based on his frequency of inspirational tweets every day. Not to mention having interviewed him in the past, he’s just as consistent as they come. Let’s play two truths and a lie. One of these things isn’t true regarding Jon Reader: 1. He once ran a 50-mile race. 2. His High School team had 3 eventual NCAA Champions on the same team at one point. 3. He went base jumping, despite a fear of heights. The lie was 1, because he has once run a 50-mile race, and another time run a 100-mile race (so I guess technically that’s three 50-mile races, but one of them back-to-back). Fortunately for us, in my attempt to confirm these details, I was able to get a quote from Coach Reader on Dean Hamiti as a leader. “He’s an incredible leader that leads by example EVERY SINGLE DAY! His passion and relentless pursuit of becoming the very best version of HIMSELF are both contagious and inspiring to his teammates. I’m very proud of him and honored to be in his corner.” The quote was in a text, so I kept the all caps in. Regarding #2 above, the NCAA Champions were Brent Metcalf (Iowa), and Paul Donahoe (Nebraska), to go along with Jon when he won at Iowa State. Anyway, back to Dean. Next, I wanted to know which of his teammates has displayed strong leadership skills. “Eric Barnett has been an awesome teammate for me through everything. Wrestling-wise, advice-wise, and just as a friend. He is always there supporting us, motivating us before workouts, after workouts, telling us to do the right things and keeping us accountable throughout our season and off season.” That is a nice transition to the accountability piece. That’s a piece that routinely comes up whenever I speak to college coaches, and certainly something that has such a lasting impact, depending on the degree to which athletes are remaining accountable. So we are in agreement on the fact that accountability is a key component of being a strong leader, but I wanted to know which other characteristics are important for strong leaders to have and display. “Discipline for sure, because if you say you are a leader, but you aren’t disciplined then that one’s really hard to listen to. Motivation, being able to stand up there and talk and motivate your teammates is a really good one. Being open-minded also. Someone might not do things the same way as you, so you kind of have to adapt to their style and make sure that you can still help them in their own way. Those three are discipline, motivation, and having an open mind.” At the risk of sounding redundant, Dean has had a strong impact right away with his B1G Freshman of the Year award, and being named a captain as a sophomore, and winning a B1G title. Other than that though, I wanted to learn from Dean what he wanted his lasting impact to be on the team with how he leads. “When I first got there it was really, led by example, through hard work and having the other guys see me. I want to start to be more vocal during practice. So right now we are really working on technique and perfecting areas with our wrestling. So I want to step up and show my teammates my style, so they can pick and choose things that I can offer and have them use in their styles also.” I’m tall and thin and 165. I feel like I could pick up a thing or two from Dean’s technique. It’s a fun style not just to watch, but to wrestle I’d imagine. Now onto the competition discussion. It’s easy to say “The B1G is tough” at any weight, but in particular, 165 was very tough this season. You had returning All Americans in Hamiti along with Amine (Michigan), and Kharchla (Ohio State). Additionally, you had highly regarded newcomers Patrick Kennedy (Iowa), and Alex Facundo (Penn State), entering their lineups. That’s without even bringing up a guy like Caleb Fish (MSU) who finished in the Bloodround at NCAAs. It’s safe to say anyone seeking out competition like this is excited to have such a tough schedule, but I wanted to know who he really gets up to compete against. “Iowa matches for sure. Kennedy this year, Marinelli last year, those are ones that people like to show up to because they know it’s going to be a grind match every single time. Every single match is always hard also. This year in particular our Field House was basically full, and a couple upsets and tough matches, but that’s always fun to wrestle.” Are you wondering if Dean is working on anything specific in these technique sessions? Me too! So I asked him. “For me, mat strategy is a big one. I am the kind of guy who goes out there and tries to throw everything at you right away. I just do weird stuff and try to scramble around, so breaking down when I wrestle the top guys, to pick and choose where I want to attack more. Being a little less careless when I go out there.” Natural follow-up question, because I love watching Dean wrestle (successfully I might add) with this whole approach that he has seven minutes to score more points than the other guy. He’s constantly looking for turns and ways to break the match open, which is just a blast to watch. I wanted to know when he started to approach the sport with that philosophy. “As far back as I can remember. I’ve always been focused on cardio and conditioning. I don’t want to just go out and hold onto a guy for seven minutes, I want to have fun while I wrestle. I think that's always been part of my style to just have fun. Just wanting to move around and do flashy things.” It’s a funny thing having the opportunity to talk with people I admire so much. Leadership is interesting like that. Strong leaders can be older than you, younger than you, friends of yours, or simply someone you’re aware of. In speaking with Dean, it was clear to me that not only is this responsibility something that he takes seriously, but something he’s put a lot of time into thinking about how to get better at it. I found myself relistening to our conversation and taking a lot of great things away from it myself. He’s clearly a leader in the Wisconsin Badgers wrestling room, and now will have an impact as a leader on a 37-year-old in West Michigan. Here's hoping that the ripple effect continues.
  5. Wednesday evening marked the conclusion of the freestyle portion of the 16U/Junior National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. As we’ve stated multiple times in the lead up to the event, Fargo is a place where tomorrow’s stars either emerge or shine brightly. That was undoubtedly the case with the 2023 tournament. Later in the week, we’ll document exactly which colleges “won” Fargo; however, before getting to that point, let's take a look at how everyone did. 8. The semifinals in men’s freestyle, at the 16U and Junior divisions, have been set! Up-and-down both age groups, there are plenty of great matchups. Ranked-versus-ranked matches all over the place. For those unranked, they’ll likely make their way in the rankings after this tournament! While every matchup you’ll see Wednesday morning is worth watching, we’ve singled out 15 of the top “must-watch” bouts, with a brief explanation, as well. 16U 100 lbs - Cameron Sontz (New Jersey) vs. Caleb Noble (Illinois) MatScouts latest rankings dropped seniors from the Class of 2023 and included incoming high school freshmen. Two of those are Cameron Sontz and Caleb Noble, currently ranked 16th and 17th, respectively, at 106 lbs. The pair met in the UWW U17 World Team Trials and Sontz prevailed for fifth place. 16U 113 lbs - Konner Larkin (Arizona) vs. Isaiah Harrison (Colorado) We’ve got another talented Larkin brother in Konner, who is following in the footsteps of older brothers Kaleb and Kyler. Konner made the semis after racking up four techs in five bouts. His only non-tech was a seven-point victory over seventh-ranked Carter Pearson (Iowa). His opponent is Isaiah Harrison, who is fresh off of an 11-7 upset over #3 Lincoln Sledzianowski (106 lbs). Earlier in the tournament, Harrison needed less than 90 seconds to down Class of 2026 Big Board’er Titan Friederichs (Minnesota). 16U 138 lbs - Blue Stiffler (Georgia) vs. Mason Wagner (Pennsylvania) Blue Stiffler, not ranked overall or in the Class of 2025, made a name for himself and pulled off a huge upset in the quarters when he edged Thomas Verrette 3-3 on criteria. Verrette was the top seed after placing third in freestyle and winning the Greco stop sign in 2022. Next, he’ll have to contend with Mason Wagner, who was part of a talented contingent of freshmen at Pennsylvania’s Faith Christian Academy. Wagner was fifth in PA’s AA state tournament in 2023. 16U 195 lbs - Dreshaun Ross (Iowa) vs. David Calkins (California) A returning 16U freestyle champion and the top-ranked wrestler in the Class of 2026, Dreshaun Ross should breeze through the field and win title number two, right? That’s certainly possible seeing as Ross has made the semis with three techs in three matches and has yet to surrender a single point. His opponent tomorrow, David Calkins, has been every bit as dominant as Ross. Calkins has four techs and has shut out each of his opponents. Both wrestlers just finished their freshman year in high school. Ross ended with an Iowa state title, while Calkins was eighth in California. Junior 113 lbs - Jake Knight (Iowa) vs. Christopher Kiser (Oklahoma) Jake Knight moves up to the Junior level for the first year and knocked off one of the favorites in the quarterfinals as he put up six points in the second period to down #9 Mack Mauger (Idaho). A match prior, he had taken out #4 Ayden Smith (Pennsylvania). He’ll attempt to make it three top-ten wrestlers in as many matches with Michigan recruit Christopher Kiser in the semis. Kiser has generally been dominant with a seven-point win over Johnny Green (Ohio) in the quarters representing his closest match. Junior 120 lbs - Beric Jordan (Oklahoma) vs. Isaiah Cortez (California) It’ll be two of the top-six 120 lbers in the country doing battle as #3 Isaiah Cortez meets #6 Beric Jordan. Cortez is always in contention with third-place finishes in both styles last year at the 16U division. Earlier this year, he was third in both styles at UWW’s. Jordan is looking to post his third ranked win of the tournament after downing #12 Gauge Botero (Pennsylvania) and #17 Cam Stinson (North Carolina). Junior 120 lbs - Leo DeLuca (New Jersey) vs. Ethan Rivera (Florida) The other half of the Junior 120 lb bracket contains two top-ten talents with Leo DeLuca and Ethan Rivera. Currently, DeLuca is ranked fifth and Rivera ninth. During the high school season, DeLuca was a National Prep champ at 113 lbs, while Rivera was seventh at 120 lbs. Last year, DeLuca won the 16U freestyle title at 113 lbs and Rivera was eighth at 106 lbs. Junior 126 lbs - Brady Roark (Missouri) vs. Jax Forrest (Pennsylvania) One of the most impressive performances from the first two days of the tournament(s) have come from graduated senior Brady Roark. The future South Dakota State Jackrabbit has a handful of quality wins and might be considered a surprise semifinalist. The stakes are even higher in the semis as Roark will take on 2022 U17 World silver medalist Jax Forrest. Though just entering his sophomore year of high school, Forrest is one of the top pound-for-pound high schoolers in the country. He’ll serve as a great litmus test for the impressive Roark. Junior 132 lbs - Kale Peterson (Iowa) vs. Dalton Perry (Pennsylvania) Could this be a preview of things to come in college with Kale Peterson on his way to Iowa and rising junior Dalton Perry already committed to Penn State? We have plenty of time before the two could square off representing their respective home-state powers, so you may as well enjoy this one. The top-seeded Peterson was finally scored on in the quarterfinals and had to pull out some late-match heroics to topple Matthew Botello (Massachusetts) last match. A pair of scores in the last :15 seconds pushed him into the semis, 9-6. Perry breezed through the quarters but was in an entertaining shootout against Dmitri Alarcon (Colorado) in the Round of 16 earlier in the day. Both have been pushed to the brink so far this tournament, so I’d expect points to be scored by both parties. Junior 145 lbs - Kannon Webster (Illinois) vs. Jaxon Joy (Ohio) Kannon Webster is looking to put himself into elite company by making his third Junior freestyle final and winning his second title. Everything we’ve seen this week leads one to believe that another Webster win is inevitable. Webster was finally pushed a bit in his quarterfinal match against Christopher Coates (Indiana) after a series of one-sided matches leading up to that point. Jaxon Joy hasn’t even had that one “close call” yet. He’s posted six techs and only surrendered points in one of those contests. The most recent win came at the expense of #13 Layton Schneider (Oklahoma). Joy’s semifinal appearance has already locked up a placement higher than his in 2022 (7th). Junior 152 lbs - Collin Gaj (Pennsylvania) vs. Grigor Cholakyan (California) It’s an intriguing East Coast/West Coast matchup at 152 lbs between Collin Gaj and Grigor Cholakyan. Both were third in Fargo in 2022, with Gaj doing so at the 16U level and Cholakyan as a Junior. Gaj is currently ranked fifth in the country at 145 lbs and #15 overall in the Class of 2025. Cholakyan, a Stanford recruit, is #36 in the Class of 2024 and #11 at 152 lbs. In his last match, Gaj teched a wrestler ranked above Cholakyan at 152 lbs, Paul Ognissanti (Maryland). Junior 182 lbs - Justin Rademacher (Oregon) vs. Orlando Cruz (Indiana) It can be a rare sight for top-notch graduated seniors to compete at Fargo these days, so it’s fun to see a pair of Big Board’ers in the mix at 182 lbs with Justin Rademacher and Orlando Cruz. Both will stay in-state for college as Rademacher is heading to Oregon State and Cruz will be a Purdue Boilermaker. Rademacher has had little resistance in securing his second Junior freestyle All-American honor. In his last match against future Pac-12 rival Cole Han-Lindemyer (Minnesota/Stanford), Han-Lindemyer scored the first four points, but Rademacher stormed back to win 17-7. Cruz’s biggest test came in the Round of 16 when he downed Jarrel Miller Jr., one of the top wrestlers in the Class of 2025. Cruz also came back from an early deficit (6-0) to get his win. Junior 195 lbs - Jersey Robb (Oklahoma) vs. Karson Tompkins (Texas) A member of Oklahoma State’s top-ranked recruiting Class of 2024, Jersey Robb’s win in the quarters clinched Fargo AA honors for the first time. Robb has yet to be tested, or even scored upon, during his run to the semifinals. A neighbor to the south may have something to say about that as Karson Tompkins has been extremely impressive in his own right. Tompkins has teched Class of 2023 Big Board’ers (Kingsley Menifee and Justin Griffith) in each of his last two matches. Tompkins is currently ranked #72 overall in the Class of 2024, but that could change with his strong tournament thus far. Junior 220 lbs - Cole Mirasola (Wisconsin) vs. Jay Henderson (Utah) Last year’s 220 lb 16U national champion, Jay Henderson, has stepped up to the Junior level and will get his stiffest test of the tournament thus far with 2022 fifth-place finisher Cole Mirasola. Cole is one of seven Wisconsin wrestlers in the Junior freestyle semis, which has them in first place heading into Wednesday. Mirasola had four straight techs before getting by Coby Merrill (California) 8-4 in the quarters. Henderson’s closest call came against Hudson Skove (New Jersey) in the Round of 16, when he prevailed, 8-5. Junior 285 lbs - Navarro Schunke (South Dakota) vs. Koy Hopke (Wisconsin) The heavyweight bracket in Fargo has some excellent semifinalists. Graduated senior Aden Attao is up top leaving #1 Koy Hopke and #4 Navarro Schunke on the bottom half and on a collision course for Wednesday morning. In 2021, both wrestlers were double 16U champions in Fargo, Hopke winning at 220 and Schunke at 285 lbs. Both have made the semis on the strength of four-straight techs along the way. This is one we hoped to see, so don’t leave early before the big guys take center stage!

  15. Today, Austin Gomez was a topic of conversation as it was announced that he will be headlining the Stalemates “Street League” 4 card with a bout against DII national qualifier Cayden Henschel. While Gomez wasn't able to specifically talk about the Stalemates match, he does discuss his move to the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club, including long relationships with Sean Bormet and Kevin Jackson. Gomez and Dysen Gould also discuss why Gomez chose not to use his seventh-year of eligibility and the injuries he dealt with during his final year at Wisconsin. For the full interview, check out InterMat’s Rokfin Page (no paywall).

  19. Wrestling fans and coaches rarely come to a universal consensus; however, one topic that everyone hates (and for good reason) is forfeits. Especially at the collegiate level. Forfeits stink. Nothing takes the air out of a good dual meet like a forfeit wedged in between some high-quality matches. Luckily, last year’s NCAA rule changes that allowed true freshmen to compete attached in a limited number of dates is one piece of legislation that should help diminish the number of forfeits. In years past, a coach may have to choose between burning a wrestler’s redshirt or forfeiting a weight class. Today, with the help of Dan Seifring and our friends at WrestleStat, we’ve looked to see which schools have had the fewest number of forfeits over the last decade (in dual meet competition). There are plenty of different teams at the top of this list; Service academies, traditional powers, and smaller schools all have representation on this list. The following schools have averaged one forfeit (or less) per year, for the last decade: As you can see, only Navy can say that they’ve gone the entire period observed without surrendering a single forfeit. While coach Cary Kolat (and Joel Sharratt before him) have the luxury of a large roster, unforeseen circumstances happen from time to time. Now a decade is a long time, the following schools have gone through the last five years without a forfeit. Army West Point, Clarion, Iowa, Michigan State, Navy, NC State, Oklahoma, and Virginia Tech. The following head coaches have not given up a forfeit during their tenure at the current institute: Cal Baptist - Derek Moore (1 year) Cornell - Mike Grey (2 years) Illinois - Mike Poeta (2 years) Navy - Cary Kolat (3 years) Schools that have gone through the entire decade without giving up more than one forfeit in a season are: Clarion, Navy, NC State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Rutgers For those that are curious, the highest ten-year totals during this time were: Duke - 104 Davidson - 85 SIU Edwardsville - 68 Bloomsburg - 60 Northwestern - 55 The highest single-season forfeit number during the period observed was from Campbell in 2015 (40). They did right the ship and saw seven-straight forfeit-free years before having six in 2023. We are generally headed in the right direction forfeit-wise, as a whole. 2022-23 marked the first non-Covid year where there were less than 100 total forfeits combined, by all DI schools. The total number, per year, during this time period has been: 2023 (99), 2022 (147), 2021 (63), 2020 (188), 2019 (159), 2018 (158), 2017 (116), 2016 (162), 2015 (182), 2014 (155).
  20. Arizona State’s coaching staff is one of the top crews in the country. The Sun Devils added another key component with Eric Thompson on July 1. “Anytime you can get a promotion at work, it’s exciting,” Thompson said. “It feels good that they are recognizing your hard work and you're an asset to the program.” Thompson was added as a volunteer coach in August 2021 to help coach and spar with the heavyweights in Tempe. Since the NCAA Division 1 Council eliminated volunteer coaches, teams were allowed to add a handful of coaches as full-time assistants. “With the new rule change, it has been on the docket,” Thompson said. “It was great to find out when ASU said they were offering it to me. We built a community for myself and my family and we enjoy it. It was a no-brainer to take on a bit more.” Thompson’s responsibilities are fairly similar to the previous years at Arizona State. However, Thompson has a new responsibility added to his plate this upcoming season. “I can do home visits and go to tournaments and evaluate wrestlers,” Thompson said. Thompson is excited to meet the families of potential Sun Devil wrestlers and get some great home-cooked meals down the road. “I was telling Cohlton, I wish I could have come to your home visit because I know your parents are cooking good food,” Thompson said. “It will be nice to meet the family because I don’t always meet the brother or sister or aunt and uncle.” Although his role has changed, Thompson’s goals on the mat are the same. “I just want to help carry on the tradition of Sun Devil Wrestling and keep this team in championship contention every year,” Thompson said. In Thompson’s two seasons as a Sun Devil, he has developed Kordell Norfleet and Anthony Montalvo, worked with Cael Valencia and was in the corner for Schultz’s run to the NCAA final in 2022. In the back of Thompson’s mind, he has thought about becoming a head coach one day. However, he does not see himself leaving the desert anytime soon. “I don’t see any reason to change what I’m doing now,” Thompson said. “I enjoy where I'm at and for my wife and I, as long as we are having fun, there is no reason to leave.” While Thompson stays at Arizona State, he has a final goal for each Sun Devil wrestler. “I am trying to help these guys reach their goals and help them become well-rounded adults,” Thompson said.

  22. In our previous Fargo articles, we’ve repeatedly stated how the 16U/Junior National Championships are a showcase for the stars of tomorrow. That’s been the case in the previous iterations of the tournaments and will continue to be the case for the foreseeable future. Last week, we presented the Fargo credentials for the 2023 DI All-Americans. Now, we’ll flip it around and look ahead to the future. As you’re following the tournament, from the FargoDome or from your couch, here are wrestlers that have committed or signed with DI programs, who plan to compete at the 16U/Junior National Championships. If there is no year noted by a particular recruit, he is from the Class of 2023. 23. Before we get going here, I just want to say a few things. Break a little kayfabe if you will. If you’re familiar with my online personality then you probably know that I have a knack for picking a random enemy to troll for a couple months or so here and there. I just want to apologize to those few who I have gone after over the years. It’s not who I am in real life and not who I want to be in fake life. Sometimes we forget that there's still a human being behind the social media name and nobody wants to be harassed daily. The wise philosopher Thor once told Loki that “life is about growth and that he seems content with just staying the same.” I don’t want to be a Loki. I want the power of Thor. So, I’ll try to turn over a new leaf. Will it work? I doubt it, but I will try. Also, turning over a new leaf is a stupid phrase. Why would you turn over a new leaf? You should be turning over the old leaf that has the ugly side showing. A new leaf is just a new leaf and we don’t know what it means. Anyway, I'll try to be more cordial from here on out and see if it works. Unless it’s Seton Hall Pirate. Shane Sparks and I will get our revenge for that Abacus debacle. Ok, I think there are some questions that vaguely reference wrestling down here. Shane Sparks was tweeting about the lightning-like atmosphere at the 2018 PSU/OSU dual. That Friday night big time matchup on BTN was a lot of fun. What dual this year will light Jag’s cigarette in regards to the dual schedule? Jkos11 I try to put the kibosh on hating and you ask me to look up schedules in July? This love-fest crap ain’t gonna be easy. The short answer is Iowa against everyone but specifically against Iowa State. I always look forward to that one and the storylines between the teams are growing more than Adam Fellers’ hat brim. That’s it. That’s the only dual I care about this year. Jagger, you’ve been noticeably silent about the issue of Crocs. We need you on record. Footwear essential or footwear faux pas? Tsabolov Brands I actually saw the largest pair of Crocs I’ve ever seen the other day and immediately thought of how you’d be in shambles over it. I swear these things had to be a size 16. My take on Crocs? They’re hideous to look at. Have I worn them? I’m scared I’ll fall in love with them because they’re probably comfortable. I dealt with this once with Zubaz in the early 90’s. How did it turn out you ask? Lil’ Jagger’s sixth-grade class picture is drenched in striped parachute pants for all of eternity. I won’t make that mistake again. What local food item would you pick to have them sell at the arena where Rutgers wrestles? Mat Jerms Media You mean Jersey Mike’s Arena? I feel like Jersey Mike’s subs would make sense. I think they even have one already, but I don’t go walking around the place to see. It’s usually straight through the door to find my guys Dan Seifring and Brian Miller and we watch the Knights put up another victory because as we all know Rutgers has never lost with Jagger in the building. Seven wins and counting! Thinking about the Zuckerberg-Musk MMA fight. Who had a better chance of making the lineup? Zuckerberg 2002-2004 Harvard or Musk 1995 Stanford. Mickadelphia I would appreciate it if you stopped thinking about it. It’s bad enough that we are caught in the middle of a social media war between these two bozos and don’t need to give them any more attention. One guy carves up and botches a perfectly fine working service and the other one creates a new one that sucks just as much. I hope Tom from Myspace runs in and hits them both with a chair. I’m going on a second-first date to WWE Smackdown this Friday. What are your predictions for Friday night’s matches? Rachel Gallardo A second first date? Is that like repeating eighth grade for dating? Speaking of repeating, Bianca Belair gets a rematch with Asuka for the title she recently lost to The Empress. Will Iyo Sky cash in her briefcase and try to steal the strap? I assume she makes her presence known, but barring Asuka getting knocked out by Charlotte Flair, I don’t see it happening. The Bloodlines are in shambles at the moment with Jey Uso in line for a title shot, but don’t be surprised if the man they call Goldberg shows up and nudges his way into SummerSlam; which will probably be your third-first date. Any hope for the Mets heading into the second half? Hopefully, my Buccos can get it together. Dysen Gould Son, there’s no hope for us. At least not for me but I’m used to it. I’ve been hardened by the years of losing. Someday you will, too. I told you not to gloat to Earl after beating the Nationals in April. Now you pay the price. Well friends, its another Friday is in the books. It’s the height of Summer. And that means it’s Fargo time. They have beach wrestling! In North Dakota!

  25. “It is a brotherhood. Everyone on the team has a shared goal and a shared mission. We’re all trying to accomplish it together,” said United States Merchant Marine Academy Assistant Coach Daniel May. The United States Merchant Marine Academy is the only Federal service academy with a civilian option and is located in Kings Point, N.Y. USMMA, which is renowned for its rigorous curriculum, demands more credits than any other federal service academy for a baccalaureate degree. Each wrestler will graduate debt-free with a Bachelor of Science degree, a U.S. Coast Guard license, and an officer’s commission in the U.S. Armed Forces. Every year, most of the students in each incoming class are among the top 20% of their high school cohort. Students that enroll in rigorous curricula such as honors, advanced placement, international baccalaureate, and dual-enrollment courses are given special consideration. Candidates must have successfully finished their high school education at a recognized secondary school or its equivalent in order to be appointed to the Academy. At least 15 units of credit must have been obtained by them: three English units, three mathematics units (from algebra, geometry, and trigonometry); one laboratory-based physics or chemical unit. Candidates are strongly advised to complete four years of mathematics, including calculus, as well as physics and chemistry, according to the Academy. They must have undertaken a full academic course load. The recruiting process for USMMA is similar to other schools in college wrestling. They look at the state placers, and their grades, and get a feel for their college plans or career plans. If your GPA is on the lower side, a military academy is most likely not going to be the best fit for you, even if it is a free education. The Academy's Sea Year program, which gives midshipmen the chance to gain practical, real-world experience aboard operational commercial or military vessels traveling to ports across the world, complements this rigorous academic program. The wrestlers spend about 330 days out at sea going all over the world. “It makes wrestling a different experience here. It takes a special type of kid to be successful here,” said May. During the Sea Year, the midshipmen have the opportunity to see an average of 19 countries. USMMA wrestlers have an off-season like all college programs, but many things make the experience at USMMA different. USMMA does not have semesters, they have trimesters. The wrestlers are taking around 19 credits a trimester. There are only one-to-two elective classes in four years. The classes are chosen for them. Plebes last term took classes such as Statics, Physics 2, and Chemistry. Most classes lean towards the STEM side. The “Deckies” took classes such as Terrestrial Navigation and Integrated Navigation. USMMA is a small school, so the wrestlers will often have the same classes and the same teachers. “It is a very nice program, but it is pretty unforgiving,” said May. Wrestlers can make up to $100,000 starting if they go into the maritime industry. If they choose active duty, they will be making six figures at their five-year mark. USMMA has had a few wrestlers after graduation join elite special warfare units like the Navy SEALS. “There are a lot of opportunities to do great things,” Coach May explained. “Because you have so many options, it is pretty hard to not find a career path that works for you.” May also stated, “We were a younger team this past season, but our upperclassmen keep us solid.” Division III NCAA qualifier, James Cruz, has already had multiple job offers upon graduation. Senior captain Nate Johnson was the Valedictorian of his class and is currently completing a Master's Degree in engineering before he heads off to flight school. “Hard-working guys like our team make me excited to go to work every day,” May asserted. The team feeds off the hard worker chain. Vincent Renaut (2010) and Daniel Twito (2011) have both won National Champion titles for the USMMA. There have also been 11 All-Americans. There are about six guys on the team going to Leatherneck, the opportunity to explore Marine Corps Officer Development. Midshipmen are assessed on their military prowess, leadership qualities, and physical fitness throughout the month-long course. At USMMA, it serves as the main evaluation method for Marine Corps hopefuls. Some of the wrestlers will be entering the Air Force and flight school for the Navy. Thirty percent of the wrestlers will be going on active duty after graduation. “Our guys have their challenges, but it makes them stronger. Instead of having a coach responsible for you and holding you accountable, they have to hold themselves accountable (at sea),” explained May. When the wrestlers are out at sea during their designated times, they are not guaranteed to be together. There are instances where they could be the only athlete on the ship. The ship schedule has been adjusted so the wrestlers are not coming back late. They do not get their whole summer to train their junior year, but their sophomore year they do. The trimester before the season starts their senior year, they are out at sea. USMMA is preparing wrestlers for success in their post-graduation lifestyles. If wrestlers are not doing well academically, they are not thinking about competing athletically. The wrestlers are driven so there is little opportunity for error. The team has a buddy system. The third classman will take a plebe under his wing and go over his academics with him because he has already taken said class. A lot of the wrestlers have taken the same classes so the veterans make sure the younger ones have the resources they need to be successful in and out of the classrooms. “It is definitely like a family because everyone is watching over each other,” observed May. USMMA is a great opportunity for wrestlers who want to continue to wrestle and want to go into the Maritime industry or the military. Wrestlers have the opportunity throughout the years at the Academy to explore different areas of the military instead of going to a specific Academy and picking one choice and having to stick with it. This can help prevent team turnover for wrestlers who have a general idea of what they want to do in the military, but still want to explore the options. Attending the Academy is a way for wrestlers to wrestle, serve their country, and at no cost. May stated, “The student-athletes have to want to want this.” The USMMA Wrestling team brought in 15 new plebes, including a former PIAA AAA state placer on July 7, 2023. The regiment, the upperclassmen, return on July 23 for classes.
