AMES, Iowa -- Minnesota piled up points in Ames on Sunday, winning the dual's first five matches and producing seven bonus-point wins to run up a season-high scoring total in a 40-7 win over Iowa State. The 33-point win is an emphatic finish to a 7-5 (5-4) regular season that included an undefeated run on the road (5-0). The undefeated road record is the first for Minnesota since 2012-13. “The guys were really aggressive all day and that's exactly what we want to see from them,†said Head Coach Brandon Eggum. “We did a lot of things well today. A lot of positives, like scoring bonus points when we had those opportunities. Momentum is always such a big thing and this can help us create some momentum heading into Big Tens.†The key to Sunday's one-sided performance from the Gophers may have come in the day's opening bout, their only victory not to produce bonus points. At 174 pounds, Chris Pfarr controlled his contest against returning All-American and tenth-ranked Lelund Weatherspoon, not allowing a single takedown while scoring four of his own in a 10-4 decision. â€Chris Pfarr's win at 174 was key today. He upset a top-ranked wrestler at his weight class and our guys were pretty fired up after that. That was big. It got us on a roll,†said Eggum. Minnesota's momentum only grew with another unexpected win at 184 pounds. With regular starter Bobby Steveson nursing a minor injury, the Gophers turned to Brandon Krone for his first dual match of the season. Krone made the most of the opportunity, earning a 10-2 major decision to further build the Gophers' confidence. Following those early wins, the three Gophers who have produced the most bonus-point wins for the Gophers so far this season delivered again in the next three matches. That began at 197 pounds, where one of the only things missing from No. 2 Brett Pfarr's resume this season was a pin. Despite six major decisions and seven tech falls, Pfarr had not yet pinned an opponent. His match Sunday didn't initially appear it would be his first, as Marcus Harrington scored an early takedown and popped ahead, 2-0. Pfarr responded aggressively, escaping quickly and scoring 11 points in fewer than two minutes before settling in for the pin. Eighth-ranked heavyweight Michael Kroells followed with three, four-point tilts in the final 30 seconds of the first period against Quean Smith. Early takedowns staked Kroells a 6-2 advantage and the series of tilts before the end of the opening frame gave Kroells an 18-2 tech fall. Turning back to the lightest weight class, seventh-ranked 125-pounder Ethan Lizak started slowly against NCAA qualifier Kyle Larson, picking up a takedown two minutes into the match to go up, 2-0. In the second, Lizak again picked up a takedown late, but this time sunk in a half-nelson and pinned Larson just before the end of the period. Sunday was the third time in the past five duals that the trio of Pfarr, Kroells and Lizak have each produced a tech fall or pin. The day's most-anticipated match opened the second half of the dual and, in what has become a hallmark of No. 17 Mitch McKee's matches, there were more points put on the board between he and No. 10 Earl Hall than any other match Sunday. McKee picked up an early two on Hall, but a reversal and near-fall put Hall on top. McKee repeatedly challenged Hall, closing to within two points and later one point, but was unable to catch the two-time All-American, dropping the match, 16-9. Any chance that Hall's victory could spark a second-half run for the Cyclones was quickly snuffed out by No. 11 Tommy Thorn in his 141-pound match against John Meeks. Thorn picked up a takedown fewer than 30 seconds into the match and, by the 1:54 mark, had picked up his first pin of the season. With three matches remaining, Thorn's pin gave Minnesota a new season-high with 30 team points. After Ben Brancale fell at 149 pounds in his first career dual appearance for the Gophers and No. 8 Jake Short capped off a 9-1 major decision at 157 thanks to an early hip toss that became a six-point move, No. 18 Nick Wanzek capped the dual for Minnesota with yet another pin, this one coming almost immediately off the second-period whistle. Wanzek sank in a cement mixer on Logan Breitenbach and earned the pin 18 seconds in the middle frame. Full match-by-match results are available at: z.umn.edu/wrisurec Wanzek's pin was the fourth of the day for Minnesota, something the Gophers had not accomplished since a 2012 match against Itasca Community College as part of the Bison Quad. Minnesota's run of seven bonus-point wins were the most for the program since a 2014 dual against Indiana, a match where the Gophers earned two falls and five major decisions. Against that same Indiana program earlier this year, Minnesota picked up four straight bonus wins, something they did again on Sunday. Prior to this season, the Maroon and Gold hadn't had such a run since 2015 against Maryland. Those superior individual results led to a noteworthy team score as well. The Gophers put up 40 or more in a dual for the first time since a 2013 contest against Wyoming and won a dual by more than 30 points for the first time since a 2014 contest against Michigan State. Today's dual was the last for Minnesota this season. The team will have next weekend off to prepare for the Big Ten Championships, which will be held in Bloomington, Ind., on March 4 and 5. PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel wrestling team came from behind to defeat Penn by a 26-13 margin on Sunday afternoon and maintain ownership of the Abner's Cheesesteak Trophy. The Dragons trailed by 10 points halfway through the dual, but won out the remainder of the matches to close out the regular season on a high note. The dual began with the 157 match and Penn scored first as May Bethea defeated Willie Davis by major decision. The Quakers' Joe Velliquette defeated Austin Rose at 165 and then No. 13 Casey Kent took a 4-0 decision from Ebed Jarrell at 174 to put Penn up, 10-0 early. At 184, Alex DeCiantis was able to get the Dragons on the board as he edged Joe Heyob, 3-2 with a takedown in the closing seconds of the match. However, the Quakers' No. 19 Frank Mattiace came back with a win over Joshua Murphy at 197 to give Penn back its 10-point advantage as the dual reached its midway point. The Dragons' rally began as No. 17 Joey Goodhart came out of halftime with a 14-3 major decision over Tyler Hall in the heavyweight match. Tanner Shoap then picked up a 9-4 win over Jeremy Schwartz at 125 to bring the Dragons within three, 13-10. Drexel got its first lead of the day after a strong performance from No. 11 Kevin Devoy Jr. resulted in a technical fall over Carl Antrassian at 133. David Pearce then extended the Dragons lead with a technical fall of his own, putting the Dragons ahead 20-13 with one match to play. No. 18 Matthew Cimato won by injury default at 149 which wrapped up the day's competition and allowed Drexel to walk away with a victory over Penn in the Battle of 33rd Street for the second year in a row. The Dragons finish the regular season with a 13-6 overall record and a 8-3 mark against conference opponents. Penn ends the year at 6-8 overall, 4-7 EIWA. Drexel Wrestling will go on to compete in the EIWA Championships that will be held at Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa on March 3 and 4. ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior Brian Realbuto beat top-ranked Bo Jordan at 174 pounds and No. 1 Gabe Dean defeated defending NCAA champion Myles Martin at 184, but it was sophomore Jeramy Sweany's victory at heavyweight that lifted Cornell to a 19-18 upset win over No. 4 Ohio State on Sunday afternoon. The eighth-ranked Big Red closed its regular season with a 13-2 record after knocking off the Buckeyes in the NWCA National Duals Championship Series. Ohio State fell to 11-3 on the year. Realbuto, a two-time NCAA All-American and 2015 national finalist, upset the unbeaten Jordan thanks to a first period takedown just 16 seconds in. That was the difference, as both earned escape points at the change and scrambles in the late second and third resulted in no scoring, much to the chagrin of Ohio State's coaching staff that requested a video review on one. The call was upheld, and Realbuto defended a shot late to pick up the win, his 111th in a Cornell singlet. Dean was just as impressive against the reigning champion at 174 pounds, controlling the center against Martin throughout. Dean used four swipes in the third as he locked in a cradle for a six-point move in the third, but the very near pin wasn't called and the two-time defending champion at 184 pounds improved to 27-0 on the season with a 10-5 victory. Trailing 18-16 heading into the heavyweight match and with Buckeye Olympic gold medalist Kyle Snyder sitting the dual out, Cornell's Sweany picked up the lone takedown, earned an escape and a riding point for the clinching 4-0 win over Josh Fox, igniting the crowd and giving the Big Red its win over a top five team for the first time since knocking off fourth-ranked Minnesota 19-17 at the 2015 National Duals. It was the program's first home win over a top five squad since a 21-16 victory over the third-ranked Gophers in 2011, also at Newman Arena. Sweany ended the match right, but it was freshman Noah Baughman's dominant 4-0 win of his own over 16th-ranked Jose Rodriguez at 125 pounds that set the tone. Cornell closed strong, winning five of the final six matches to overcome Ohio State's bonus points and take a 7-6-1 lead in the all-time series. The Buckeyes led as much as 14-3 after Micah Jordan's pin at 149, but that lead would be cut over the final six matches before being overcome at heavyweight. Sophomore Brandon Womack won of those swing matches, using a third period takedown to claim a 4-2 win over Cody Burcher at 165 pounds. Ohio State got in deep on a shot midway through the third, but Womack was able to lift him into a cradle, before scoring with 30 seconds left. Burcher was able to escape the cradle and back points, but Womack rode him out for the victory. The Buckeyes showed their strength at the top, as top-ranked Nathan Tomasello earned a technical fall at 133 and Micah Jordan, No. 5 at 149, earned a third period fall to give Ohio State key bonus points. Luke Pletcher added a hard-fought 5-2 win over Will Koll at 141 to build its 11-point lead heading into 157. Senior Dylan Palacio changed the momentum with a thoroughly dominant 19-8 win over Anthony Decarlo. With dual meet season over, Cornell will look to earn its 11th consecutive EIWA title and qualify wrestlers for NCAAs during the two-day tournament at Bucknell from March 3-4. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Northern Illinois University wrestling team capped off their regular season on Saturday, with two victories in a tri-dual against Cleveland State and Gardner-Webb at Woodling Gymnasium. "It's nice to close the regular season with two team dual wins. For the most part, we did what we went out there to do," said head wrestling coach Ryan Ludwig. "We made some errors in the first dual, but we are closer to our peak performance as individuals and that's our goal heading into the MAC championship." Gardner-Webb The Huskies defeated the Runnin' Bulldogs, 22-18, and remain undefeated against Gardner-Webb. The Huskies made a strong statement from the start, with a first-period pin from true-freshman Brock Hudkins (Danville, Ind./Danville) at 125-pounds, giving NIU an immediate 6-0 lead over Gardner-Webb. At 141-pounds, Angel Velasquez (Modesto, Calif./John H. Pitman) returned to action for the Huskies and captured a victory in a 9-4 decision, increasing NIU's lead to 9-3. Following Velasquez's win, Steve Bleise (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) came out and recorded a second-period technical fall at 149-pounds. That is Bleise's second technical fall in as many duals and his fourth of the season. The Runnin' Bulldogs strung together back-to-back wins at 157 and 165, making a run at the Huskies and closing the gap, 14-12. However, Trace Engelkes (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) answered back with a dominant 10-2 major decision win over Austin Trott. Following suit, redshirt senior Shawn Scott (Holly, Mich./Holly) recorded his 101th win of the season, a 10-1 major decision, to help secure the Huskies' win. Cleveland State After Cleveland State and Gardner-Webb faced off, the Huskies returned to the mats to take on Cleveland State and emerged victorious in a 36-9 dual. Brock Hudkins recorded his second pin of the day against CSU's John Martin and, once again, gave the Huskies a 6-0 lead coming out of the gates. Alijah Jeffery (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) allowed just one point from his opponent in his technical fall victory over Andrew Coghill, at 133-pounds. Similarly, Steve Bleise notched another technical fall, 19-4 -- his third in his last three bouts. Recording the Huskies' third pin of the day, Caden McWhirter (Pratville, Ala./Pratville) pinned Ryan Montgomery in 2 minutes and 31 seconds. Continuing the momentum, Trace Engelkes held his opponent scoreless and won by technical fall, 16-0. Shawn Scott went 2-0 on the day as he pinned the Viking's Collin Kelly in 2 minutes and 48 seconds, extending NIU's lead , 33-9. Heavyweight Caleb Gossett (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central), rounded out the Huskie's lineup with a 4-1 win by decision, adding three points to the Huskies' final team score. The Huskies improved to 8-8 and 2-6 in the MAC following the tri-dual. The team will take a short break before heading to Cedar Falls, Iowa for the Mid-American Conference Championships March 4th-5th. PHILADELPHIA -- The Drexel wrestling team earned a 20-12 victory over Maryland on Senior Night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Saturday night. The Dragons won six of the 10 matches on their way to their 12th dual meet victory of the season. Seniors No. 11 Kevin Devoy Jr. and No. 18 Matthew Cimato secured wins in their last career appearances on their home mat. Maryland started things off with a win in the 125 match, as Michael Beck defeated Tanner Shoap by a 6-2 decision. Devoy came out next and secured a 6-1 victory over the Terps' Billy Rappo to even the score at 3-3. In the 141 match, Ryan Diehl took a 6-1 decision from David Pearce to put Maryland ahead again, 6-3. Cimato gave the Dragons' their first lead of the night with a 10-1 major decision over Maryland's Adam Whitesell. Although Justin Alexander took a win in the 157 match to put the Terps up again halfway through the dual, the Dragons would take the next four matches to go ahead, 20-9. Austin Rose defeated Patrick Gerish at 165, 3-1 and then Ebed Jarrell followed with a 14-2 major decision over Josh Ugalde in the 174 match. Alex Deciantis was able to edge Idris White, 2-1 at 184 and then in exciting fashion Joshua Murphy battled David-Brian Whisler to the second set of tiebreakers and walked away with a 6-3 victory. No. 17 Joey Goodhart also took his opponent to overtime in the heavyweight match, but dropped a 4-2 decision as Maryland's Youssif Hemida secured a takedown in sudden victory. The late effort from the Terps was not enough to overcome the deficit the Dragons had created. Drexel was able to walk away with a 20-12 victory and has now secured wins in five of its last six outings. With the win, the Dragons improve to 12-6 overall and remain 7-3 against EIWA opponents. Maryland moves to 2-16 on the season and are 0-9 against Big Ten opponents. Drexel returns to action tomorrow, when it will close out the regular season with a dual down 33rd Street at Penn. The Dragons and Quakers will battle for ownership of the Abner's Cheesesteak Trophy with matches beginning at 1 p.m. at the Palestra. PITTSBURGH -- In its final regular season dual, the 24th-ranked Pitt wrestling team dominated ACC-foe Duke, 28-9, Saturday night in the Fitzgerald Field House. The dominate win was highlighted by redshirt junior Ryan Solomon taking down No. 3 Jacob Kasper at 285 pounds. Boosting the Panthers to victory were redshirt freshman Taleb Rahmani at 165 pounds and sophomore TeShan Campbell at 165 pounds, who recorded back-to-back falls in less than three minutes, respectively. With the win, Pitt finishes the regular season 11-5 overall and 2-3 against conference opponents. In his final home dual as a Panther, senior Mikey Racciato started things off for Pitt at 149 pounds. Racciato gave the Panthers a 3-0 lead in the dual after a strong third period, resulting in a 11-9 decision over Duke's Xaviel Ramos. At 157 pounds, Rahmani recorded his 10th fall of the season over Jake Faust in 2:34. Rahmani led 4-1 after two takedowns before pinning Faust. Campbell carried Rahmani's momentum to 165 pounds as he also pinned his Duke opponent, this time in 1:40 over Michael Wright. The Blue Devils claimed the following two bouts at 174 and 184 pounds. At 197 pounds, senior John Rizzo picked up a win in a 5-0 decision with all of his points coming in the third period. In one of the most anticipated matches of the night, No. 19 Ryan Solomon topped No. 3 Jacob Kasper in a 4-3 decision at 285 pounds, snapping Kasper's 20-match win streak. Solomon struck first, taking down Kasper in the opening frame but the Blue Devil quickly escaped. Kasper opened the second starting in the bottom position and escaped again to tie it 2-2 for the lone point of the period. Solomon started final period on bottom and reversed Kasper to take a 4-2 lead. Kasper eventually escaped, but it wouldn't be enough. Sophomore LJ Bentley returned to the win column after a 3-1 decision over Thayer Atkins. Bentley's points came in the form of an escape, misconduct point and tacked on the final point with riding time. With the dual in favor of Pitt 24-6, junior Dom Forys improved to 17-1 on the year after picking up a 14-3 major decision over Cole Baumgartner. Forys used six takedowns to secure the win with one escape and riding time. The Blue Devils claimed the final bout of the night as redshirt junior Nick Zanetta dropped a 6-1 decision to Zach Finesilver at 141 pounds. The Panthers head to the 2017 ACC Championships Saturday, March 4, on the campus of NC State in Reynolds Coliseum. Results: 149: Mikey Racciato (UP) dec. VESTAL, N.Y. -- The Binghamton wrestling team finished off their regular season with a 46-0 shutout over Bloomsburg Saturday evening in the West Gym. The win marks the largest margin of victory the Bearcats have earned over a Division 1 program. "I'm proud of the way the guys recovered after last night," head coach Matt Dernlan said. "We had a short turnaround where we were able to show a lot of maturity. We put in good effort top to bottom with all ten guys today." Steven Bulzomi set the tone for today's dual earning himself a pin 4:22 into his match against Willy Girard. With a forfeit at 133 against Audey Ashkar, the Bearcats took a quick 12-0 lead. Dylan Caruana, who was recognized before the match for a senior day ceremony, dominated at 141 earning close to two minutes of ride time. His opponent, Grant Bond, avoided pin by kick-out for most of the third period. Caruana won by a 6-0 decision, increasing the lead to 15-0. From there, Binghamton took four straight bonus point wins over the Huskies to clinch the dual. At 149, Parker Kropman had another outstanding performance. The freshman took control early leading 9-2 through the second period. Accumulating a total of 3:05 in ride time, Kropman earned a 12-3 major decision over Nate Newberry. Tristan Rifanburg followed suit at 157, coming out of the gate strong with an 11-2 lead after the second period. Tacking on four back points in the third period and a point for over two minutes of ride time, Rifanburg finished the match with a 16-2 major decision. Jake Einbinder wrestled a tough match at 165, going point for point through the first period. Fighting to get a seven point lead through the second, Einbinder accumulated over 2:01 in ride time for the win. Earning a 16-4 major decision over Kevin Laubach, the redshirt freshman bumped the Bearcats lead to 27-0. Anthony Lombardo added onto his performance from last night, earning four back points and a reversal early in the first period. The redshirt sophomore added up 2:40 in ride time for a 14-2 major decision and back to back match wins. No. 15 Steve Schneider controlled his match from the start, racking up over three minutes in ride time through the second period. The junior took a 4-0 decision at 184 over Kyle Murphy for his 29th win of the season. Bloomsburg forfeited again at 197, before Connor Calkins stepped on the mat and almost simultaneously pinned his opponent. Just 39 seconds into the match, the pin was the fastest in his career and his first in a dual this season. With the win, Binghamton improves to 9-7 overall while the Huskies fall to 4-17. The Bearcats will have a week off before they head to Bucknell March 4-5 for the EIWA Championships. LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- "This is a very special day. This is a special team. And it's all the teams leading up to here that built the history and the quality of this program," said Rider Head Coach Gary Taylor talking about the Rider wrestling team's come-from-behind victory over the Maryland Terrapins. The Broncs won 23-20 on the strength of two pins in the middleweights. The Broncs received wins from J.R. Wert (Christianburg, VA/Christianburg), B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South), Dean Sherry (Brick, NJ/Brick Township), and Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, DE/Caravel Academy), along with a pair of pins from Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic), and Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional). The match began at 125 with an early 6-1 victory by Wert over Michael Beck to give the Broncs a 3-0 lead. They would then fall behind quickly, with Anthony Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park Regional [South Dakota St.]) losing a tight 5-3 sudden-victory match, and Evan Fidelibus (Easton, PA/Easton Area) and Gino Fluri (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren Regional) getting pinned to give Maryland a 15-3 lead through four matches. The Broncs would get back on the winning track, starting with Clagon defeating Justin Alexander, 3-0, to push the score to 15-6 for a brief moment. The Broncs would be penalized one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct after the end of the match. Walsh would then strike out of nowhere in what seemed like a fairly slow match, scoring the fall in 6:06 over Patrick Gerish. At 174, Sherry would fight hard on the way to a 7-3 decision over Josh Ugalde of Maryland. The match would end up tied at 14 when Maryland was penalized a team point of their own at the end of the 174 pound match. Stinson would then strike in the heroic moment of the match, wrestling up a weight class at 184 and getting the fall in 1:46 to give the Broncs their first lead since 125 pounds, 20-14. “I might as well go for it,†said Stinson about the big move. “I put him right on his back, and I knew I had to get the pin because it was huge for the team.†In an end fitting only for the script of a Hollywood movie, Wolfe would come out to wrestle at 197 knowing that a victory would secure Coach Taylor's 442nd and final dual victory. He did so in workmanlike fashion, defeating David-Brian Whisler, 8-3, to clinch the match, 23-14. “I was happy to be put in that position, knowing that I could win for Coach Taylor, myself and the team,†said Wolfe about being put in position to clinch the match. The Broncs would forfeit at 285 pounds and take home the 23-20 victory. “EWLs are what we've got next, and we'll be going into training for that. We've hit this thing pretty well over many years, and coming out of EWLs are the NCAA Championships. This is an incredible team, and I've been amazed by them,†said Coach Taylor in regards to the next step for the season. The Broncs will next compete at the Nelson Fieldhouse on the campus of Bloomsburg University in the EWL Championships, looking to add conference titles and national qualifiers to the history of Rider Wrestling. Report: Dresser accepts head coaching position at Iowa State

Kevin Dresser was named NWCA Coach of the Year in 2016 (Photo/John Sachs, Tech-Fall.com) Virginia Tech head wrestling coach Kevin Dresser appears to be headed to his home state of Iowa to become head coach at Iowa State. Dresser, a native of Humboldt, Iowa and former University of Iowa wrestler, has accepted the position at the Ames, Iowa school, the Iowa State Daily student newspaper reported Saturday afternoon. The paper cited a "source close to the wrestling program" but did not name the source. The Iowa State head coaching position became available when current coach Kevin Jackson had announced January 31 that he would be leaving at the end of the season. The Cyclones are 1-11 this season. Despite recent hard times, Iowa State ranks third in terms of number of NCAA team titles with eight, behind only Oklahoma State and the Iowa Hawkeyes. With the news of Jackson's impending departure, three top recruits -- Austin Gomez, Jake Allar, and Ethan Smith -- had announced they were seeking release from their commitments. Dresser would have limited time to have them stay with their original decision to wrestle at the Big 12 school. Dresser would finish out the season at Virginia Tech, according to the Iowa State Daily. The 54-year-old Dresser would be returning to somewhat familiar territory, having been born in Fort Dodge, Iowa -- about 40 miles northwest of the Iowa State campus -- and raised in nearby Humboldt, hometown to Frank Gotch, early 1900s professional wrestling champ whose popularity is credited with the growth of amateur wrestling in mid-America. Dresser was a two-time Iowa high school state champion, compiling an overall record of 112-11-1. Dresser continued his athletic and academic career at the University of Iowa, wrestling for Dan Gable. He was a two-time Big Ten champion and 142-pound titlewinner at the 1986 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. That same year, Dresser was presented with the Mike Howard Award as the most valuable wrestler for the Hawkeyes that season. After graduation, Dresser stayed at Iowa, serving as an assistant coach under Gable. He then set off on his own as a high school coach in Virginia, first at Grundy High School, then at Christiansburg High. Dresser took the helm of the Virginia Tech wrestling program in April 2006. During his time in Blacksburg, Dresser has guided the Hokies to a 142-50 record, with two ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) team championships. In recent years, Virginia Tech has sent at least eight wrestlers to the NCAAs. The program is currently ranked No. 5 by InterMat in both the tournament rankings and dual meet rankings. Wisconsin drops Michigan State to cap Big Ten dual season
InterMat Staff posted an article in Big 10
MADISON, Wis. -- It was an exciting night at the UW Field House, as the No. 18 Wisconsin wrestling team put on a show marking a 26-12 victory over Michigan State on Friday night to put a cap on its Big Ten dual season. Wisconsin (6-5 overall, 4-5 Big Ten) suffered an early setback as Michigan State's Drew Barnes pinned Santonio Cathery (157), which gave MSU a 6-0 lead. However, the Badgers immediately turned the tides, winning the next five bouts. Connor Medbery (HWT) had a standout performance for the Badgers, adding five points to the board with a 15-0 tech fall. The victory was Wisconsin's lone bonus-point win of the night. In the second match, Hunter Ritter got the Badgers back on track. He came out strong with two takedowns in the first period and kept control throughout to finish the 5-4 decision. Ricky Robertson (197) continued the Badgers successful rhythm starting with his first takedown in the first period. He attacked late in the second to take a 4-0 lead into the second period. He was taken down early in the third after escaping, but retaliated with a reversal at the last second to close the 7-2 decision. The Badgers' winning ways continued through Medbery's win to defining decisions at 125 and 133 by Johnny Jimenez and Eli Stickley, respectively. Andrew Crone ditched his "Comeback Crone" persona and attacked first for a 2-1 edge after the first period at 149. He slipped out of Trimble's grasp more than halfway through the second and then tacked another takedown. Trimble hit Crone with a reversal late in the third, but the Badger escaped and held off to clinch the 6-3 decision. Seniors TJ Ruschell and Isaac Jordan both came away with victories at 157 and 165, respectively, -and secured the 26-12 Wisconsin victory. Ruschell defeated Austin Thompson, 8-4, and Jordan dropped Drew Hughes with a tight 3-2 decision. The Wisconsin wrestling team returns to the UW Field House on Sunday to host Central Michigan. The dual is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. (CT). UW's esteemed senior class will be honored in a ceremony before the start of the dual. MATCH POINTS -UW won eight out of 10 matches on the night, marking the fourth time Wisconsin has won five-or-more matches in a dual and also marking the most bouts won in a dual this season. -The Badgers recorded their third-straight win headed into the final dual of the season. -For the second-straight year, UW ended Big Ten dual season with a win. The Badgers trumped Northwestern last season, 38-3. -Wisconsin improved to 27-17-2 in the all-time series with Michigan State and 14-8-1 in duals in Madison. -Hunter Ritter claimed his third-straight victory over a Big Ten opponent with his 5-4 decision. -Isaac Jordan eclipsed the 20-win mark with his 3-2 decision. -Connor Medbery matched his career high for Big Ten wins in a season with nine. -Sunday's dual will serve as senior day honoring one of the most decorated groups of seniors the Badgers have ever had. Santonio Cathery, Jarod Donar, Isaac Jordan, Rylan Lubeck, Connor Medbery, TJ Ruschell and Ryan Taylor will be honored at the match. MAT TALK "Overall, I'd say we did pretty good. We won eight out of 10 matches, so that's always good. We're always looking to go 10-for-10, so we're not quite where we want to be at, but it's something to improve on and we're looking forward to Sunday. Hopefully we can capitalize on the matches that we didn't win today and get big wins against a good team in Central Michigan." - Junior Ricky Robertson "I told my coach before the match that I'm going to make sure I don't give up the first takedown. It's kind of been a little bit of a problem, starting kind of slow, and I can always put some pace up at the end because I'm in pretty good shape. It was definitely good to get out to a good start this match and not really have to come back for a third." -Andrew Crone "We beat a Big Ten team. We won eight out of 10 weight classes. I felt like we saw a lot of the things we've been working on in practice and there's things that are recurrent issues that stopped us from maybe building on our leads or finishing matches the right way, things we've been talking about for a month now. It's time to straighten those out. We're going to talk about it tonight, talk about it tomorrow and come out ready Sunday against Central Michigan." -Associate head coach Trevor Brandvold Results: 125: Johnny Jimenez dec. BROOKINGS, S.D. - The final match of the dual tied it, but it was the first match that gave Purdue the edge to upset No. 17 South Dakota State on its home mat 20-19 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals Championship Series presented by Theraworx and the United States Marine Corps. With both teams winning five bouts, the 19-19 tie was broken using the second criteria and Ben Thornton's pin at 125 pounds. The Boilermakers concluded the dual season with a 9-7 record while defeating a ranked opponent for the first time this season. Thornton's pin, a 3:33 stick of Ben Gillette, was the first of the season for the redshirt sophomore as he pushed his record to 24-12. A 5-0 shutout from Kyle Ayersman at 141 pounds gave Purdue a 9-5 lead after three matches. The next four matches shifted the lead the Jackrabbits' way and their lead ballooned to 19-9 with four wins in the middle of the lineup, two of which were major decisions. At 174 pounds, a reversal by SDSU's 16th-ranked David Kocer with just seconds remaining in a match that appeared to be headed to sudden victory broke a 4-4 tie with Jacob Morrissey to deal the Boilermaker a tough 6-4 setback. The Boilermakers' upper weights then went to work. A six-point move in the final period earned Tanner Lynde a 13-3 major decision of Martin Mueller. The 184-pounder's third major decision of the season narrowed the lead to 19-13. A top-10 upset came in the ensuing match with true freshman Christian Brunner's impressive 8-3 showing against seventh-ranked Nate Rotert. Brunner, unranked at 197 pounds, defeated his second nationally ranked opponent in as many matches by scoring a trio of takedowns. Two of the takedowns came in the third period, one of which was originally not called on the mat, but successfully challenged by Purdue head wrestling coach Tony Ersland. "Christian never gets too high and he never gets too low," Ersland said. "He understands there is a process that we are after and he stays committed to what we are asking him to do." The win was the 20th for the East Dundee, Illinois, native, who knocked off No. 11 Ricky Robertson of Wisconsin 4-1 in his last match. "The game plan was to go out with a high pace and have fun out there," Brunner said. "It was fun, that's the best way to look at it." With the dual score at 19-16 in favor of SDSU with one bout to go, Purdue needed a decision to tie and that's what Tyler Kral delivered, blanking Alex Macki 3-0. Kral's win, the 21st of his redshirt senior campaign, sets a career high after winning 21 combined matches in his three previous seasons. The shutout was also a team-best seventh of the season. "I like how the back half of the dual went," Ersland said. "Even though we lost the match at 174, Jacob Morrissey fought for everything and represented himself well. That got our bench back into it. It got everybody involved, especially when we were quiet in the middle of our lineup. I was happy that even though Jacob lost, he competed better and got our team going. Certainly Ben Thornton's win will stick out because he had the fall and that was the criteria that we won on, so it was very big for Ben to come out and get that pin." NORMAN -- The No. 19 Oklahoma wrestling team dominated Oregon State, 29-7, in its last dual of the season on Friday night inside McCasland Field House. The Sooners (11-6) used three bonus-point wins, including two technical falls from seniors Clark Glass and Matt Reed, to cruise past the Beavers on Senior Night. "I thought we did a really nice job" OU head coach Lou Rosselli said. "It was the first time I saw, on all ten of the matches, that our effort was really good. Their attack rate was really good. I thought that, for the most part, everybody competed to the best of their ability, and I think that's a big part of it. We're coming down the stretch, and I think it's important to compete hard and go out there and expect to win and take control of the match." Christian Moody was a catalyst for the Sooners, securing a 9-5 decision over Oregon State's Kegan Calkins in the 125-pound bout. Moody connected for two takedowns early to hold a 4-2 lead after the opening period. The redshirt freshman tacked on an escape and two takedowns over the next two periods for the win. In the 141-pound matchup, Mike Longo downed Jack Hathaway by 13-2 major decision. Hathaway struck first, but Longo countered with an escape and a takedown to lead 3-2 after the opening frame. Longo had a big second period, adding an escape, a takedown and a 4-point nearfall and tacked on another takedown in the third for the bonus-point win. At 149 pounds, No. 13 Davion Jeffries registered a 5-3 decision over Joey Delgado. The bout was scoreless after the first period, but Jeffries escaped and recorded a takedown late in the second for a 3-0 lead. The sophomore added another takedown in the third to hold on for the win. In his final match in McCasland, No. 11 Glass recorded a 17-0 technical fall in 4:52 over Abraham Rodriguez in the 157-pound bout. The redshirt senior owned two takedowns, two 4-point nearfalls and two 2-point nearfalls to put the Sooners up 15-4 midway through the contest. In the 165-pound contest, No. 14 Yoanse Mejias secured a 9-4 decision over Rodney Williams. Mejias connected for two takedowns in the opening period. The junior tacked on two takedowns and added the riding-time point in the final frame. At 174 pounds, Reed kept the momentum going for the Sooners with an 18-1 technical fall over Bob Coleman. Reed secured three takedowns, two 4-point nearfalls and a 2-point nearfall in 4:35 to put the Sooners up 23-4. Hayden Hansen downed OSU's Seth McLeod by 4-3 decision in the 174-pound contest. Hansen secured a late takedown in the first and added an escape in the second to lead 3-0 entering the final period. McLeod countered with an escape and a takedown of his own, but Hansen secured the riding-time point for the win. At heavyweight, No. 18 Ross Larson registered a 4-3 decision over Cody Crawford to cap off a big night for the Sooners. Entering the second frame scoreless, Larson registered a reversal to hold a 2-1 advantage through two periods. The redshirt senior connected for a last-second takedown to hold on for his last home win. "I think the way the guys competed, the way they operated today, was a sign of their potential and that we can have some great things happen for us down the road here in the postseason," Rosselli said. "Again, it's really how you operate. It's not always the winning and losing. It's how you operate, how you make weight, how you handled your match, how you competed, every second out there. We were teaching that all year, so I'm glad to see that a lot of them are competing the way I think we should compete." Freshman Dalton Duffield dropped a 19-6 major decision to Joey Palmer at 133 pounds, and in the 197-pound bout, OSU's Corey Griego beat Brad Johnson by 10-8 decision in SV-1. The dual marked the final of the season for the Sooners. OU will return to the mat for the beginning of postseason on March 4-5 in Tulsa for the Big 12 Championship in the BOK Center. BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- In its final dual of the season, No. 11 Lehigh took seven of 10 bouts from visiting Rutgers to defeat the 12th-ranked Scarlet Knights 23-10 Friday inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall as part of the NWCA National Duals Championship Series. Junior Darian Cruz and senior Mitch Minotti posted wins by major decision, but it was an overtime win from freshman Andrew Price at 184 that helped Lehigh clinch its 10th win and avenge a three-point loss at Rutgers last season in the same National Duals Championship Series event. With the win, Lehigh closes the dual meet season at 10-4, clinching the Mountain Hawks' 18th consecutive season with at least 10 dual meet wins. Rutgers heads into the Big Ten Tournament with a 12-5 dual season. "It was a really good Rutgers team and they came to wrestle tonight," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "There were a lot of really good matches and our guys just fought really hard. I was really pleased with the way we wrestled. A lot of guys grew tonight." Lehigh claimed the first two bouts on the night and five of the first six to build a 17-3 advantage through 165, then won overtime matches in two of the final three weight classes to close out the dual campaign. 2/17/2017 Wrestling vs. Rutgers, 2/17/17 Wrestling vs. Rutgers, 2/17/17 Darian Cruz opened the dual with an 18-4 major decision over Brandon Paetzell at 125. Cruz scored three first period takedowns plus a two-point near fall to lead 8-2 after one period and hit a cement mixer in the third, nearly pinning Paetzell. He opted to cut Paetzell loose late in the third and couldn't pick up the one takedown that would have given him the technical fall. Sophomore Scott Parker made it two straight wins for the Mountain Hawks, using a third period pancake to take down Scott DelVecchio to break a 1-1 tie at 133. A 1:29 riding time advantage resulted in a 4-2 victory for Parker. Rutgers posted its first win at 141 as fifth-ranked Anthony Ashnault defeated 16th-ranked senior Randy Cruz 4-0 in a battle of All-Americans. Ashnault escaped in the second period and added a takedown in the same frame plus 1:08 riding time for the scoring in the bout. A pair of similarly-ranked fifth-year seniors met at 149 and after yielding the first takedown, Lehigh's Laike Gardner battled back for a 7-3 win over Ken Theobold. A late first period score had Gardner up 3-2 after one. He led 4-3 after two on the strength of a penalty point for stalling and then reversed Theobold early in the third and rode out for the victory. Junior Drew Longo gave Lehigh a 13-3 lead going into intermission with a come-from-behind 2-1 decision over No. 17 John Van Brill at 157. Trailing 1-0 in the third, Longo scored a reversal and then rode out, erasing Van Brill's riding time advantage to hold on for the one point victory. "Drew's such a leader on our team," Santoro said. "That's why he's one of our captains. We talked about it a month ago. He wanted to do the drop. He felt it tonight, but Drew has been there a thousand times and he can keep wrestling when he's in that situation." Minotti's second major decision in as many duals extended Lehigh's lead to 17-6 as he downed Willie Scott 13-5 at 165. An early cradle resulted in a six-point move for Minotti who added three more takedowns in his bout, yielding just an escape in each period plus a takedown in the final seconds with the major already secured. The Scarlet Knights gained hope towards a comeback following an upset win at 174 as Jordan Pagano knocked off fourth-ranked sophomore Ryan Preisch 10-4. Preisch led 2-0 early but a surprise headlock from Pagano stunned Preisch for two-and-two. Pagano kept Preisch at bay with takedowns in the second and third periods to hand Preisch just his third loss of the season. Within 17-6 with three bouts remaining, Rutgers bumped up No. 13 Nicholas Gravina to 197 and sent out Phil Bakuckas to face Price at 184. The match was low scoring and had minimal scoring attempts with the bout tied 1-1 through regulation with Price receiving the only warning. After a scoreless sudden victory period, Price rode Bakuckas, who had recently moved up from 174, out in the first half of the tiebreaker and then escaped early in the second half of the period and used solid defense to close out the clinching victory. "He did a great job," Santoro said of Price. "Things happen in dual meets. We've seen that over the years. Everybody came out and wrestled extremely hard, to a man. We were really pleased with that. It's a good way to finish up the dual season with a win like this." Gravina picked up the only bonus win for Rutgers, claiming an 11-2 major decision over sophomore Thomas Murray at 197. Senior heavyweight Doug Vollaro closed the dual with a 3-1, sudden victory win over Rahzonn Gross. "Any time you can get a win over a team like Rutgers it's a great win," Santoro said. "They're doing a great job. It was a fun dual. It was really good to finish with a good Big Ten team and now we move forward with our eyes on March right now." Lehigh will now shift focus towards the 113th EIWA Championships, March 3-4 at Bucknell's Sojka Pavilion. Results: 125 - Darian Cruz (Lehigh) major dec. The Class of 2017 came into the Princeton wrestling room four years ago determined to build a winning culture. They did so by never experiencing a losing season. For the first time in 30 years, a Tiger senior class posted four straight .500-or-better seasons, although it took until the final dual of their careers to clinch that milestone. Princeton brought an 8-8 record into Lancaster, Pa., but a quick start led the Tigers to a 28-9 win at EIWA rival Franklin & Marshall. While head coach Chris Ayres rested his NCAA Championship-qualifying senior trio of Brett Harner, Jordan Laster and Ray O'Donnell, it was classmate Max Rogers who helped Princeton finish the season with a 9-8 dual record. Rogers picked up his 10th win of the season with a 12-2 major decision at 149, which helped Princeton race out to a 15-3 lead. Starters Ty Agaisse and Pat D'Arcy opened with decisions, while sophomore Mike D'Angelo added a 17-0 technical fall at 157. Ayres was able to see three of his younger wrestlers close the dual, starting with a 9-1 major decision for Kevin Parker. Carlin Powell moved up two weights and gutted out a 2-1 win at 197, while freshman Christian Araneo closed the match with a first-period fall at heavyweight. Princeton will be off next weekend, but it will return to the mat in two weeks to compete in the 2017 EIWA Championships at Bucknell. This is the fourth straight year the Bison have posted double figures in victories, and the third consecutive season they have recorded at least 12 wins.
