Devin Winston defeated Abe Assad at Who's Number One (Photo/Juan Garcia) EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- SIUE wrestling Head Coach Jeremy Spates received commitments from two top-level competitors. Devin Winston, of Park Hill, Missouri, is eligible immediately after transferring from Minnesota. Austin Cooley, of Piedmont, Oklahoma, will join the Cougars in the fall of 2020. Spates said both wrestlers will strengthen the team's depth in the upper weights. Winston, who will compete at 184 or 197 pounds, is a two-time state finalist in Missouri, including a state title in 2017. "He's pretty long and lanky for his weight class," said Spates. "He does some different things on his feet and does well on top. He's from a good club and high school as well so he knows how to wrestle in most areas." Winston was ranked No. 1 at the 182-pound weight class by FloWrestling coming out of high school. He placed third at the Ironman and won the Kansas City Stampede. Cooley is a two-time state placewinner with a third-place finish in the state of Texas and a second-place finish in Oklahoma. He figures to step in at 197 pounds. "Austin is tough," said Spates. "He went to Fargo and won a lot of matches. He has a lot of potential and is a great athlete. He trains hard and wrestles hard so we think we'll see some big things from him. I think he's just scratched the surface of what he can do."

UNI's Jacob Schwarm is the third Division I wrestler to reach 10 falls (Photo/Tony Rotundo, WrestlersAreWarriors.com) INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA has released updated standings for the 2020 NCAA Wrestling Awards that will be awarded in March at the respective Division I, II and III Wrestling Championships. The inaugural NCAA Wrestling Awards were presented at the 2012 wrestling championships. The three awards, given in each division, honor the Most Dominant Wrestler as well as the student-athletes that have accumulated the most falls and the most technical falls throughout the course of the regular and postseasons. For falls and tech falls to be counted for the awards they must come against opponents in the same division (i.e. Division II vs. Division II). Ties in the two categories are broken based on the aggregate time. Northern Iowa 125-pounder Jacob Schwarm has moved up the leaderboard for Division I falls with a pair last week over Northern Colorado and Air Force. He is the third wrestler in the division to reach 10 falls and sits third behind leader Ben Darmstadt of Cornell with 11. Central Michigan heavyweight Matt Stencel also has 10 and holds second place via his quicker aggregate time. Tiffin 174-pounder Hayden Bronne continues to lead Division II with 11 falls, while Fort Hays State heavyweight AJ Cooper is the big mover to second with falls over Central Missouri and Ouachita Baptist to become only the second wrestler in the division with double-digit falls. Johnson & Wales (Providence) 149-pounder Marvin Cunningham picked up four falls to win his weight class at the NEWA Open to take over first in Division III with 16 falls. New England College 149-pounder Evan Fidelibus picked up three falls in duals against Norwich, Southern Maine and Bridgewater State to take over second with 15 falls. Six additional wrestlers are on their heels with 14 falls. No change in Division I tech falls with George Mason redshirt senior Alex Madrigal holding a commanding lead with 10, three more than second place Pat Glory of Princeton. Iowa 125-pound national champion Spencer Lee has begun to make a run at the award with tech falls in each of his last three matches to move into third with six. The St. Louis metro area features the top two in tech falls in Division II as McKendree 197-pounder Ryan Vasbinder and Lindenwood (Missouri) 125-pounder Carlos Jacquez lead the way with five. Vasbinder holds the tiebreaker with a time of 23:36, eight minutes quicker than Jacquez. The race for the award is far from over as 10 wrestlers are one back with four techs. Four wrestlers have surpassed double digits in tech falls in Division III, led by Roger Williams 149-pounder Tyler Gazaway with 12. Gazaway picked up tech falls in duals over Western New England and JWU (Providence) last week to move one ahead of York (Pennsylvania) 125-pounder Jared Kuhns. Stephen Maloney (Messiah) and Thomas Poklikuha (Stevens) round out the double-figure tech fall group in Division III. The initial Most Dominant Wrestler standings will be released later this season to allow wrestlers to achieve the minimum number of matches required to be eligible for the standings.

MINNEAPOLIS -- JROB Intensive Wrestling Camps and Trackwrestling have announced a partnership to co-host a DI Wrestling Championships kickoff party on Wednesday, March 18, at 7 p.m. at The Barn at Cowboy Jack's Saloon and Restaurant in Minneapolis. Event proceeds will be donated to TakeDown Cancer, an initiative of the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund. The event, known as 7 IN 7, will feature seven high-profile guests with connections to the wrestling community, including businesspeople, entertainers, athletes, and coaches. The full lineup of featured guests will be revealed via JROB Intensive Wrestling Camps and Trackwrestling social media in the coming weeks. Shane Sparks, Trackwrestling and Big Ten Network wrestling commentator, will serve as the event emcee. "This is an exciting new event that will tell stories of the life-changing impact wrestling has had on all of us," said J Robinson, the three-time NCAA national champion head coach and founder of JROB Intensive Wrestling Camps. "We are proud to partner with Trackwrestling and TakeDown Cancer to help find a cure for a disease that has touched so many." For Trackwrestling, the event is an opportunity to further expand its wide-reaching presence during the championship weekend. "We are thrilled to work with JROB Intensive Wrestling Camps, a long-time partner of Trackwrestling, in an effort to bring the wrestling community together to celebrate our great sport and support an important cause," said Travis Shives, Vice President of Sports, SportsEngine and Trackwrestling. "The wrestling community is special and we can't think of a better opportunity to come together and make an impact off the mat." "All of us at the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund would like to take this opportunity to thank J Robinson for partnering with TakeDown Cancer," said Randy Shaver, KARE 11 news anchor and founder of the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund. "Each dollar raised makes an impact on the lives of Minnesota's Cancer Community! Thank you to J Robinson." Donna Strobel and Greg Strobel at National Wrestling Hall of Fame Honors Weekend in 2012 (Photo/Larry Slater) Funeral services have been announced for Donna Strobel, wife of former Lehigh University wrestling coach Greg Strobel and active leader in the sport in her own right, who died Sunday, January 12 at age 67. A Celebration of Donna Strobel's life will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at Packer Memorial Chapel on the campus of Lehigh University, 18 University Drive, Bethlehem, Pa.. The family will receive relatives and friends from 11:00 a.m. until time of the service. Friends may share memories and tributes at the Long Funeral Home website. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Donna Strobel's memory to The Sandye Caruso Memorial Endowment Nursing Scholarship Fund. Address: St. Luke's Hospital c/o Development Office, 801 Ostrum Street, Bethlehem, PA 18015. In its tribute to Donna Strobel, USA Wrestling described her as "a longtime employee for the U.S. Wrestling Officials Association and a leader in the sport" as well as "wife of Hall of Fame inductee Greg Strobel, a past USA Wrestling staff member and currently USA Wrestling's Second Vice President." Rick Tucci, president of the U.S. Wrestling Officials Association, said this of Donna Strobel's contributions to the organization and its members: "She was so close to the officials. She ran the organization for so many years. She was always respected. Donna and Greg have always been a part of my life. It is hard to put into words what she meant to the organization and to me. When I heard about it, it was like losing a member of my family. Donna knew wrestling. She knew people. She always had an open mind. She allowed me to express my thoughts, frustrations and concerns. She would give me the most valuable advice I could get. It was based upon my love for her and her love for me. I am going to miss her." Bruce Baumgartner, USA Wrestling President, and, before that, four-time Olympic medalist wrestler, said, "I knew Donna and Greg since 1982. I babysat their kids back in Stillwater, Okla. when they worked with USA Wrestling. Greg was one of my coaches in my corner when I competed. My wife Linda and I have known Donna and Greg for so long. She was loved in the wrestling community and was involved for so many years. It was a shock to me. It is sad to lose someone who meant so much to so many people." In announcing Donna Strobel's passing and how she will be honored, USA Wrestling shared this statement from Rich Bender, the organization's Executive Director: "Our thoughts go out to Greg, his daughters Christina and Jennifer, and their entire family. Donna's passing was a huge loss to the entire wrestling community. Her contributions throughout the years have been significant, both as a USA Wrestling staff member and a leader with the U.S. Wrestling Officials Association. The wrestling community will miss her joyful presence. Donna was a dear friend to many of us in the sport, and we are all saddened by her loss." Born in Portland, Oregon on Jan. 25, 1952, Donna M. (Chandler) Strobel was the daughter of the late Leo and Barbara (Graham) Chandler. She was a 1970 graduate of Marshall High School in Portland, Oregon who went on to attend Oregon State University. Donna Strobel leaves behind her husband of 45 years, Greg; two daughters, Christina and Jennifer; a brother and a sister; and four grandchildren. -

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Purdue wrestling team posted its 10th consecutive dual victory over intrastate rival Indiana on Monday, winning 7-of-10 matches en route to a 23-9 win on the road in Wilkinson Hall. The Boilermakers improved to 9-2 overall on the season and 2-1 in conference duals, while the Hoosiers remain winless at 0-5 (0-4 B1G). Indiana got the crowd excited early with an upset at 149 pounds, however the momentum would be short lived for the hosts. The Boilermakers quickly righted the ship as they took the next six matches to squash any hopes for the home team and put the win to bed. Freshman Kendall Coleman started the streak with an 8-6 overtime win over Fernie Silva, scoring early and late to pick up his 22nd win of the season and first in conference action. Sophomore Tanner Webster followed suit at 165 pounds for the Old Gold & Black, picking up his first career Big Ten dual win with a 6-4 decision over Dillon Hoey. Webster scored two takedowns in the first and cinched the win with another score in the third to make it 6-3 Purdue. Senior Dylan Lydy took things into deep water against No. 25 Jacob Covaciu, heading to overtime for the sixth time this season tied 1-1. The fourth-ranked Boilermaker got the job done again, winning his 22nd of the season and sixth in OT to continue Purdue's run. Junior Max Lyon and senior Christian Brunner notched back-to-back major decisions at 184 and 197 as Lyon posted a 12-4 win over Jake Hinz and Brunner dominated a 10-1 victory over Nick Willham. Lyon racked up five takedowns in his win, improving to 2-1 in the Big Ten, while Brunner earned his 21st win of the season and first in conference with a takedown in each period and over four minutes of riding time. Freshman Thomas Penola finished up the streak at heavyweight, using strong second and third periods on his way to a 6-1 win over Jake Kleimola. IU picked up wins at 125 and 133 to cut into Purdue's lead, but only took decisions to lock up the Boilermakers' team win as they went into the final match of the night. Sophomore Parker Filius finished the night on top, scoring takedowns in the first and third on his way to a 7-4 victory over Eddie Bolivar. The Boilermakers remain on the road next weekend, heading east to Maryland and Rutgers on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Friday's match at Maryland is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at the Xfinity Center, while Sunday's match vs. Rutgers will begin at 1 p.m. at the RAC. Results: 149: Graham Rooks (IU) def. South Carolina state placer Brandon Proveaux killed in crash
InterMat Staff posted an article in College
Brandon Proveaux, White Knoll High School heavyweight who placed fourth at the 2009 South Carolina state wrestling championships, was killed in a three-vehicle crash Saturday. He was 29. The wreck happened at 6:40 a.m. on Highway 90 near Old Highway 90 not far from Myrtle Beach. According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell, Proveaux was in a 2018 Nissan Armada traveling east on S.C. 90 when he went left of center, striking a dump truck in the opposite lane. The dump truck then went across the center line and hit a 2006 Ford F-150 traveling behind the Armada, Tidwell said. Proveaux died at the scene of injuries from the crash, according to MyrtleBeachOnline.com. The drivers of the other vehicles were transported to nearby hospitals. Proveaux's wrestling coach at White Knoll, Kevin Emily, shared the tragic news on his Facebook page Sunday. "Got a text early this morning. It was one that no one wants to receive. One of my most fearsome wrestlers passed away in a car accident yesterday. Please pray for his family. "BP (Brandon Proveaux) was a monster on the mat and the backbone of my White Knoll team. He was ranked #1 in the state and ended up taking 4th place. After graduation he continued to grow into a really exceptional young man who I was so very very proud of." Emily, who is now head wrestling coach at Midland Valley High School in South Carolina, shared his memories of his one season of coaching Proveaux. "He was a senior when I came to White Knoll," Emily told InterMat. "The general consensus was that he could be a state champion. He was a tough guy. I was the one who wrestled him in the room." "I saw something in him ... I helped him gain confidence. He beat the number one kid in the state at a regular-season tournament -- that guy's only loss. Brandon beat another top-ranked kid a bit later. Then he got mono just before state, and ended up placing fourth (at 215 pounds)." "He was elected to a North-South All-Star list," coach Emily continued. "Got a scholarship to Newberry College." At the time of his death, Brandon Proveaux worked for Capital Vacations in North Myrtle Beach. He leaves behind a wife and two children. Funeral services for Brandon Proveaux will be held Saturday, Jan. 25 at 11:00 a.m. at Conway Goldfinch Funeral Home, 606-610 Beaty Street, Conway, SC. -
PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team returned to The Palestra for the first time in 2020 and graced The Cathedral with a pair of dominating EIWA victories. In the season's home opener, Penn won 17 of the doubleheader's 20 duals with nine of those duals adding bonus points. The Quakers opened the day with a 31-6 victory over Binghamton and closed things out with a 41-3 win over LIU. NOTES *The Quakers totaled 41 points in the day's second match. With the win and a 48-3 win over Duke, Penn has now eclipsed 40 points in multiple duals for the first time since the 2009-10 season. That season, Penn defeated Sacred Heart, 46-9 and Harvard, 41-11. *Penn wrestlers pinned four Sharks in its dual against LIU. *No. 17 Doug Zapf won both of his matches today, moving his dual meet record to 6-1. Overall, he is 18-5 and is now 9-0 against EIWA wrestlers. *Carmen Ferrante won both of his duals today, earning a major decision in both bouts. He has now won each of his last four dual matches. *Cole Urbas also won both of his bouts today. After starting his collegiate dual season 0-2, he has won five consecutive matches with a pair of tech falls. *Ben Goldin won both of his matches today and capped off the day by pinning LIU's Lawrence Horl 59 seconds into the match. *Cam Connor won his match against Binghamton today, which moved his dual record to 4-0. *Jake Stefanowicz made his dual debut against LIU and marked it with a 6-3 decision. *Daniel Planta earned his first victory of the season in Penn's win over LIU. He kicked things off at 125 pounds with a pin. Binghamton Recap Penn started the day in style, earning its first EIWA victory of the season with a dominating, 31-6 win over Binghamton. Penn had three starters out, but it didn't matter much as the Quakers won eight of ten matches -- four of which earned bonus points. After dropping a narrow, 8-3 decision at 125, the Quakers responded with four consecutive victories to develop a 14-3 lead. Carmen Ferrante got things going with his third consecutive dual victory, defeating Tomasso Frezza with a 10-1 major decision. Ferrante jumped in front quickly with a first-period takedown and carried that momentum through to the second period. Two takedowns in the second period as well as a heavy riding time advantage set up the major decision, and a final third-period takedown clinched it. The decision moved Ferrante to 12-9 on the season and evened his dual record at 3-3. Zapf kept things going with more bonus points at 141. He immediately developed a commanding lead in the first period with four takedowns. With seconds left in the period, he pushed Binghamton's Kevin Kelly on his back to tally four back points and develop a 12-3 lead. Zapf pushed for the tech fall but came just one point short as he took a 19-5 decision. At 149, Lucas Revano got Penn's third straight victory. The freshman earned his first dual decision of the season with a 10-6 win over the Bobcats' Alfonso DeRosa. Revano quickly jumped in front with a takedown and back points for a 4-0 lead. Two more takedowns and a pair of escapes clinched the victory. Cam Connor rounded off a streak of five consecutive wins for Penn, rolling to a 6-1 decision. A takedown and back points were enough for Connor to earn his fourth dual victory of the season. The win gave the Quakers a 14-3 lead at the midway point of the dual. The Bobcats would fight back out of the intermission, earning their second victory of the day with a win at 165, but it would be their last victory in the dual. Neil Antrassian got Penn back on track in a high-scoring bout. The sophomore earned his first dual victory of the season and all but clinched the dual with a 15-10 decision over Alex Melikian. The victory at 174 led right into a Binghamton forfeit at 184. Cole Urbas stormed out of the gates at 197. Within the blink of an eye, Urbas had a 10-0 lead after a takedown and two four-point nearfalls. Six more backpoints in the second period wrapped things up as he took home a 16-0 tech fall. Ben Goldin wrapped things up with a 5-2 decision over Joe Doyle. The two wrestlers were tied at 2-2 in the final period. Goldin had nearly clinched riding time, but iced the dual with just seconds remaining as he evaded an attack from Doyle and locked the Bobcat up for a takedown. LIU Recap Things started quickly in Penn's first dual against LIU. The first four duals were finished in just 16 minutes, as the Quakers tallied three falls and a major decision. As a whole, Penn won nine matches and locked up bonus points in six. Daniel Planta started the match and his second dual start with a fall just over a minute into the match. Ferrante kept it going, storming to a 12-0 major decision with a surplus of back points. The pins continued at 141. Senior captain A.J. Vindici developed a 10-0 lead with a takedown and two four-point near falls before pinning LIU's wrestler to the mat in a minute and 16 seconds. Jon Errico battled thoughout the first period and got a period with 40 seconds remaining. He tilted Rhise Royster onto the mat for the fall with just six seconds remaining in the period. Connor made it a fifth straight bonus-point win, rolling to an 8-0 major decision at 157. The Sharks would get on the board with a narrow, 4-3 decision at 165, but Penn got back on track and won the final four matches. Stefanowicz earned his first dual victory with three takedowns for a 6-3 decision before Neil Antrassian -- who wrestled at 184 -- also battled to a 6-3 decision. The two victories gave Penn a 32-3 lead. Urbas earned his second victory of the day and fifth in a row with a 7-2 decision over Mark Malico. Despite Malico getting on the board first with a takedown, Urbas stormed back with a pair of takedowns, two escapes, and riding time. Goldin capped off a quick dual with Penn's fourth pin of the day, just 59 seconds into the bout. UP NEXT The Quakers are off next week and will return to action on the road against Harvard and Brown on February 2.

PHILADELPHIA -- The Drexel wrestling team won seven total bouts and scored a pair of technical falls in a 28-9 win against Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association foe Binghamton on Sunday evening at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Sunday's victory snapped a 12-match losing streak against the Bearcats. Drexel last topped Binghamton in Dec. 2006, a 30-15 triumph for the Dragons. An entertaining dual was bookended by a pair of overtime bouts. Antonio Mininno got the proceedings started with a 3-1 win against Tommaso Frezza in SV-1. The grapplers traded escape points in the second and third periods to send the match to overtime. Mininno needed 40 of the period's 60 seconds to take down Frezza and give the Dragons (6-5, 2-1 EIWA) a 3-0 edge. Chase Shields looked to attack from the outset and parlayed that aggressive outlook into a 7-5 decision victory at 133 pounds. Shields took down Carson Sauriol three times in the first period to build a 6-3 lead. He started the second period in the down position and earned an escape but was later taken down. A scoreless third period locked in the three points for Drexel. Tyler Williams won big at 149 pounds with a 16-0 technical fall against Kevin Kelly. The true freshman led 10-0 after the first period on the strength of one takedown and eight near fall points. InterMat Staff posted an article in Big 10
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State wrestling used three bonus point wins to secure a 36-0 shutout victory over Maryland on Sunday afternoon inside Jenison Feild House on Alumni Day.The shutout marks the first for the Spartans over a Big Ten opponent in 36 years, last coming against Illinois on Jan. 20, 1984. (44-0). 20 former Spartans were in recognized at today's match for Alumni Day, including Hall of Fame coach and the all-time wins leader at MSU, Grady Peninger. Peninger, who coached the Spartans to a national championship in 1967, was joined by Don Behm from the class of 1967 along with 18 other Spartan coaches and wrestlers. "I was talking to the guys back there in the locker room after the meet," said Chandler. "I've never been part of a Big Ten shutout. This is a special day for these guys. They are the ones that did it, and at the end of the day you have to go out there and wrestle your best and wrestle in all positions for seven minutes and good things typically happen. Our guys did that, and because of that they got a shutout today and they are going to enjoy this." Michigan State started out at 125 pounds for just the second time in four bouts. Redshirt senior Logan Griffin tallied his 15th win of the season in the opening bout, winning a close 4-3 decision over Brandon Cray. Grffin tallied two takedowns in the bout for the win. The Spartans picked up where they left off in the second frame, grabbing two bonus point wins at 184 and 285 pounds. Redshirt junior Drew Hughes once against showed his dominance on top, riding out a 5-1 win over Kyle Cochran, highlighted by a takedown and a two-point nearfall. NORMAN -- Oklahoma defeated No. NR/23 West Virginia, 22-18, Sunday afternoon in McCasland Field House. The Sooners (3-2 overall, 1-1 Big 12) capitalized on three bonus-point victories to pull ahead of the Mountaineers (3-8 overall, 0-2 Big 12). "I think every time we took a little bit of a setback, somebody stepped up and did their job," said OU head coach Lou Rosselli. "I think that's really important as a team ... That's why you compete." Oklahoma built an early 8-0 lead to open the dual, courtesy redshirt senior Christian Moody and sophomore Anthony Madrigal. Moody claimed an 8-4 decision over West Virginia's Joey Thomas, followed by No. 18/23 Madrigal's 20-4 tech fall victory over Lucas Seibert. Madrigal racked up 14 points in the first period alone, tallying four takedowns, a two-point nearfall and four-point nearfall. The Oak Park, Ill., native added six more points in the second period to secure the tech fall and a season-high 20 match points. Madrigal sits at second on the team with four victories via tech fall, only behind Dom Demas (5). The Mountaineers responded in the 141-bout, as Caleb Rea pinned the Sooners' No. 6/7 Demas in the first period. The upset cut the Sooners' lead to 8-6. It was just Demas' third loss of the season (16-3) and his first to a Big 12 opponent (4-1). At 149 pounds, No. 24/NR Jacob Butler put together a stellar match to earn OU another key bonus point. Leading 2-0 after the first period, the redshirt freshman eclipsed three minutes of riding time midway through the second before adding a four-point nearfall to close out the period. With another escape and the riding time point, Butler closed out the 10-0 shutout and added four points to the Sooners' total, extending the lead to 12-6. It wasn't the first time Butler has been a key to OU's success this season, as he's been able to put together an impressive campaign and find his way into national rankings. "He's wrestled a lot of top-tier guys, and I think he's starting to believe now that he can really compete," said Rosselli. "I think now he's got a belief system, and he's expecting himself to win. That's always good." No. 20/17 Justin Thomas took yet another 157-pound bout to the wire, eventually pulling out a 7-5 decision. Deadlocked at 5-5 late in the third period, Thomas took down WVU's Alex Hornfeck with just 12 seconds remaining to take the advantage that would hold. The clutch finish gave Oklahoma a 15-6 lead and the momentum heading into the break. West Virginia cut into its deficit when No. 25/27 Nick Kiussis pinned Sooner freshman Sam Dover in the 165-pound match. With just a three-point lead, the Sooners looked to No. 10/16 Anthony Mantanona to pull away, and the redshirt sophomore delivered. With a 5-0 lead and riding time accumulating late in the third period, Mantanona recorded a clutch takedown to extend his lead to 7-0. Finishing with nearly six minutes of riding time, the extra point pushed the bout to an 8-0 major decision and gave the Sooners a critical bonus point, extending the OU lead to 19-12. It was Mantanona's fifth dual victory on the season, making him and Thomas the lone Sooners still 5-0 in dual action. At 184, Darrien Roberts secured Oklahoma's final win of the day with a 7-3 decision against Mountaineer Jackson Moomau. The true freshman, who has become a mainstay in the Sooner lineup, improves to 3-2 in dual matches and 9-6 on the season. In a matchup that could return with Big 12 and national implications later in the season, West Virginia's No. 5/2 Noah Adams got the best of No. 13/11 Jake Woodley with a 6-1 decision. While he dropped the bout, Woodley was successful in preventing a bonus-point victory, putting the score at 22-15 with one bout remaining and securing the Sooner victory. Josiah Jones and WVU's Brandon Ngati took the heavyweight bout, the dual's final match, to a tiebreaker period, where Ngati was able to pull out the 2-1 decision and make the final score 22-18. The victory improved the Sooners' record to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in Big 12 action, while West Virginia drops to 3-8 and 0-2 against conference opponents. UP NEXT The Sooners take a road swing through the Dakotas, opening next weekend with a 7 p.m. dual at North Dakota State on Friday in Fargo, N.D. OU then heads south for a matchup with South Dakota State on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Brookings, S.D.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team kept on fighting until the end, winning four of the final five bouts, to claim a 22-15 comeback win over No. 11 Minnesota on "Queen Day" Sunday afternoon (Jan. 19) in front of 2,764 fans at Crisler Center. The Wolverines won six bouts in all, earning bonus points in two, to secure their third straight Big Ten Conference dual win. The Golden Gophers took a 12-6 lead into the intermission break, after earning bonus points in each of the preceding two bouts. After the break, junior/sophomore Jelani Embree, ranked 17th in the latest InterMat poll at 184 pounds, took advantage of a second life -- a last-second Minnesota takedown was waved off in the third period -- to win in overtime, defeating 15th-ranked Owen Webster, 3-1, and swing some momentum back in the Wolverines' favor. Embree, who just missed on a leg attack late in the second, wrapped up Webster in a bodylock and, after missing on an inside trip, dropped him to the mat. Fifth-year senior Jackson Striggow, a Minnesota native, won a crucial swing match at 197 pounds, earning a 6-4 decision over Hunter Ritter to even the team score, 12-12, with Michigan strongly favored in two of the final three bouts. After a scoreless first period, Striggow finished on a pair of takedowns in the second and added a reversal midway through the third. Sophomore Mason Parris and sophomore/freshman Joey Silva earned bonus at heavyweight at 133 pounds, respectively, to slam the door on the Golden Gophers. Parris, ranked No. 2 nationally, secured his third straight pin -- and seventh of the season -- at the 3:55 mark against Garrett Joles. Parris scored five takedowns and transitioned right to a half off the fifth to put Joles on his back midway through the second period. Parris improved to 19-0 on the season. Silva also stayed unbeaten with an 11-3 major decision against Brent Jones to clinch the dual victory in the final bout. Silva scored four takedowns, including two in the first period, and added points in the third for illegal-hold penalty, an escape and 1:24 in riding-time advantage. He is 3-0 since making his season debut last week. Michigan earned two wins over the first half of the dual with senior/junior Kanen Storr and sophomore/freshman Will Lewan securing back-to-back decisions at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively. Both broke through after scoreless first periods. Storr scored a quick reversal in the second and followed with four takedowns -- two apiece in the second and third -- and rode for 1:14 to beat Jake Bergelend, 11-4. Lewan used double underhooks and a trip to score the winning takedown early in the third period in a 4-2 win against Ryan Thomas. He rode for much of the third period to accumulate 1:02 in time advantage. The Wolverines will hit the road next weekend for the first time this season in dual competition. Michigan will face Northwestern at 7 p.m. CST on Friday (Jan. 24) in Evanston, Illinois, before traveling south for a 1 p.m. CST slate against Illinois on Sunday (Jan. 26) in Champaign. Mizzou is now 52-3 all-time in MAC competition. Dack Punke got Mizzou started with a dominant 7-3 decision over Tomas Gutierrez. The 133-pound bout was close until late when Kent State Tim Rooney caught Mizzou's Allan Hart in a compromised position and pinned him with just 16 seconds remaining in the bout, giving the Flashes a 6-3 lead. But Grant Leeth helped Mizzou rebound quickly, picking up a pin over Raphael Rodriguez in just 2:28 to give Mizzou the lead back. Brock Mauller then grinded out a 6-4 decision to Kody Komara to improve to 18-1 on the year while extending Mizzou's lead to 12-6. Jarrett Jacques then made quick work of Conan Becker, earning an 18-1 technical fall win in just 4:21 as Mizzou opened a 17-6 lead midway through the dual. At 165, Connor Flynn made it two straight technical falls for Mizzou, needing just 3:16 to post a 15-0 win over Kade Byland. Kent State's Andrew McNally then stopped the bleeding for the Flashes, stopping a string of four straight wins – three with bonus points - for Mizzou with a pin of the Tigers' Jeremiah Kent in just 2:56. That cut Mizzou's lead to 22-12 heading into 184 pounds. At 184, Dylan Wisman won a hard-fought bout over Shane Mast, 6-1, to get Mizzou back in the win column. Wyatt Koelling posted a 3-2 win over Colin McCracken to extend Mizzou's lead to 28-12 moving into heavyweight. LANCASTER, Pa. -- Sunday wasn't for the faint of heart in Mayser gymnasium as Franklin & Marshall split a pair of memorable Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) doubleheaders. The Diplomats (4-3, 1-2 EIWA) dropped a heartbreaking 18-17 match to Sacred Heart that was decided by the third tiebreaker criteria, before toppling Brown by a 21-19 score. The triumph over the Bears marked F&M's first win in the series since the 1964-65 season and snapped a 24-match winless streak against Brown. Against Sacred Heart, the match began at 174 pounds and saw the Pioneers storm ahead by an 11-0 tally after the 197-pound contest. Cenzo Pelusi (285 pounds) stole the momentum with a thunderous takedown in the first tiebreaker period to claim a 4-2 decision and get the Diplomats on the scoreboard. Jose Diaz followed at 125 pounds with a clutch 11-8 decision to make the team score 11-6 before Sacred Heart extended the advantage back to 14-6 with a decision at 133 pounds. F&M continued to fight back as Wil Gil delivered a huge 20-4 tech. fall at 141 pounds to pull the Diplomats within three. Each team traded decisions to make it a 17-14 contest heading into the final matchup at 165 pounds. Emmett LiCastri came through for F&M, earning an 8-3 decision and tying the overall score at 17-17. However, the tiebreaker came down to the third criteria (Total match points scored only from decisions, major decisions, and technical falls) and favored the Pioneers by a slim 65-64 margin. Against Brown, F&M got off to a quick start with Diaz's second win of the day, a 7-5 decision at 125 pounds. A Bears' major at 133 temporarily put a hold on F&M's momentum before Gil answered at 141 with a commanding pin at 5:35. Brown once again brought the overall score within one at 9-8 with an 8-0 major at 149 pounds, but Noah Chan's 12-6 decision, followed by a key pin by LiCastri at 3:48 extended the Diplomat lead to 18-8 with four matches remaining. Three straight wins by Brown, including a pair of majors, gave the Bears a 19-18 lead heading into the final bout of the night. Pelusi led the 285-pound matchup by one after the first period and picked up an escape in the second to pull ahead 2-0. A momentous takedown in the third helped stave off a late escape from Brown as Pelusi prevailed with a 4-2 decision to seal the team score for F&M. The Diplomats continue their homestand on Thursday, Jan. 30th with a contest against Bucknell at 8:00 p.m. in Masyer. MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- An outstanding start and a timely momentum-shifting win late helped the Central Michigan wrestling team to a 25-15 victory over SIU Edwardsville in a Mid-American Conference dual on Sunday at McGuirk Arena. The win lifted CMU to 3-4, 3-2 MAC, and it helped the Chippewas bounce back from Friday's disappointing 25-13 loss to perennial MAC-champion Missouri. "It was pretty disappointing losing to Missouri because we all felt that we could beat them, but we all bounced back (on Sunday), we all wrestled tough," CMU junior Dresden Simon said. "We didn't let that (loss) affect us today." How It Happened The Chippewas got off to a hot start, getting a pin from Drew Hildebrandt (125 pounds), a technical fall from Drew Marten (133), and then a major-decision victory from Simon (141) in building a 15-0 lead. The Cougars, 1-8, 0-5, struck back with four-consecutive victories including a pin at 157 to forge a 15-15 tie with three matches remaining. The Chippewas won all three, beginning with Ben Cushman's solid 4-0 victory over Austin Andres at 184. It snapped a four-match losing streak for Cushman, a redshirt freshman, who last won at the Midlands Championships in late December. Cushman got a takedown in the second period in seizing a 3-0 lead, and then rode Andres for the entire third period to earn the riding-time point as he picked up his first dual-meet victory of the season. "That's the first time Cushman's won in a little while so that was a really important win for him and for the team," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "It was huge for the team. Somebody had to stem the tide when they started getting the momentum. Cushman did that." Closing it Out Cushman's win put CMU ahead, 18-15, and then Landon Pelham posted a 15-2 major-decision win at 197 and Matt Stencel won, 7-2, at 285 for the final margin. It was Pelham's first major of the season as he improved to 14-8. Stencel, who is ranked 12th nationally, improved to 21-4. Hot Start Hildebrandt, who is ranked 12th, posted a second-period pin to put the Chippewas up 6-0, and then Marten followed with a 17-1 technical fall. It was his second technical fall of the season. Hildebrandt (23-3) posted pins in both of the Chippewas' duals on the weekend, giving him five on the season as he improved his dual-meet record to 7-0. Marten (15-10) had lost four of his previous five matches. Simon, who is ranked 13th, led Saul Ervin, 2-1, after one period, and then hit the gas in the second period, getting a reversal, a takedown and a four-point near fall to increase his advantage to 10-2 after two periods. It was Simon's second major of the weekend as he improved to 21-7 with 10 majors. He entered the meet ranked second nationally in major-decision victories. "I remember as a freshman coach talking about trying to score 10 points every match," Simon said. "That's kind of what I try to do, score 10 or more points every match; just keep scoring. I try not to settle. "A lot of times in the past I would be up by a certain amount of points, maybe five points, and I'm like, alright, this is good enough, and I haven't really felt like that this year. I don't want to wait around for the guy to score on me or lose a match because I'm settling for something." Next The Chippewas will hit the road in two weeks for two MAC duals, the first at Ohio on Jan. 31 and the second at league-newcomer Cleveland State on Feb. 2. "Anytime you have success it's helpful," Borrelli said. "I wouldn't say that we don't have things to work on. That's a good thing, it's what you're looking for when you compete; it's a lot better to have things to work on when you've won than when you've lost. "We can do a lot of work this week on improving, getting healthy, maybe work on our conditioning some. We have two pretty tough matches in the conference. We just have to have a good week of practice and make sure we're healthy." BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- For the second straight dual, the Golden Eagle wrestling team's victory hinged on wins in the final two bouts of the day. And just as on Friday night against Buffalo, Greg Bulsak and Ty Bagoly delivered, bringing Clarion back from a 15-10 deficit to a 16-15 win over Bloomsburg on Sunday. That marked the eighth straight dual win for the Golden Eagles, the longest streak since winning nine straight between the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons. The last time Clarion won as many as eight straight in a single season was during that 1993-94 season, when they opened with 10 straight wins. The two teams split the 10 bouts on the mat, meaning the fact that Clarion (8-3, 5-2 MAC) earned the sole bonus point of the match was truly the difference. Brock Zacherl continued his undefeated streak in MAC competition with a major decision over Aaron Coleman, working Coleman over in the third period to secure a 14-5 win. Another key moment came in the 174-pound bout, with Max Wohlabaugh quickly taking down Anthony Vetrano during the sudden victory period for a 5-3 decision. Cam Butler also earned his second straight MAC win, holding off Christian Gannone in the 125-pound bout to put his team on the scoreboard. The Huskies still led the dual 15-10 heading into the last two bouts of the day, with the Golden Eagles needing wins in each to lock up the win. Bulsak grappled in a low-scoring bout with perennial nemesis Kyle Murphy at 197 pounds, at one point quickly escaping from a reverse and fighting off a shot to finish with a 4-2 decision. Bagoly very nearly took bonus points from Jarrett Walters at heavyweight as well, tilting him for a two-point fall and riding him throughout the bout for a 6-0 decision. Results: 125 - Cameron Butler (Clarion) over Christian Gannone (Bloomsburg) (Dec 6-5) 133 - Josh Mason (Bloomsburg) over Seth Koleno (Clarion) (Dec 15-11) 141 - Marlon Argueta Diaz (Bloomsburg) over Alex Blake (Clarion) (Dec 3-0) 149 - Brock Zacherl (Clarion) over Aaron Coleman (Bloomsburg) (MD 14-5) 157 - Alex Carida (Bloomsburg) over Avery Shay (Clarion) (Dec 4-2) 165 - Nate Newberry (Bloomsburg) over Mike Bartolo (Clarion) (Dec 4-2) 174 - Max Wohlabaugh (Clarion) over Anthony Vetrano (Bloomsburg) (SV-1 5-3) 184 - Trevor Allard (Bloomsburg) over Luke Funck (Clarion) (Dec 5-0) 197 - Greg Bulsak (Clarion) over Kyle Murphy (Bloomsburg) (Dec 4-2) 285 - Tyler Bagoly (Clarion) over Jarrett Walters (Bloomsburg) (Dec 6-0)

Columbia completes exciting comeback to beat American in home opener
InterMat Staff posted an article in College
NEW YORK -- Down by four points heading into the final match at 133 pounds, Columbia Wrestling (2-2, 2-1 EIWA/0-1 IVY) needed at least five to lock up the win, and first-year Angelo Rini was up to the task, doing just that, recording a 22-7 technical fall win to push Columbia to a 21-20 complete team win over Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association foe American (2-5, 2-3 EIWA) in the home opener at the University "Blue" Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. The Lions collected wins from first years Kyle Mosher (157), Lennox Wolak (174) and Rini, along with wins from junior Riley Jacops (165) and sophomore Sam Wustefeld (197) to power past a competitive and tough American side to lock up the big win. Big bonus points came from Rini's tech fall, a pin by Wolak and a major decision from Wustefeld, with every point making the difference in the final score. "It is just a good team win," said Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Zach Tanelli. "And while Angelo [Rini] is responsible for some of it, other guys played just as big a role. Up and down our lineup guys found ways to win, and even in our losses we were able to turn some things around. "Even at 184 pounds with Joe Franzese, who had been pinned early in the season by the same guy, was able to save two points for us by not getting pinned and taking the major decision and that was big, because it is a victory within the victory that is important. And overall it was just a real team effort against a really solid team in American." HOW IT HAPPENED: The match opened up at 141 pounds, with sophomore No. 24 Matt Kazimir falling by a 5-1 decision to No. 27 Sal Profaci to give American a quick 3-0 lead in the match. At 149 pounds, first-year Andrew Garr lost via fall (2:27) to No. 11 Kizhan Clarke, pushing American ahead 9-0 after the first two matches. But it was the next three matches where Columbia would put its foot down and fight right back into the match. It started with a big win from Mosher, who worked hard to get a 10-7 decision of Ethan Karsten, to get Columbia on the board at 9-3. Next up came the momentum swinging match of the day, when at 165 pounds, Jacops, down late in the match, hit a reversal at 23 seconds to take a 5-4 lead and he would go on to win via 5-4 decision over Anthony Wokasch, bringing the score to 9-6. Ridding the momentum wave set in motion by Mosher at 157 pounds, Wolak next put the hammer down against Ben Root, recording a win via pin at 5:17, pushing Columbia into the lead, 12-9, as the match hit the midway point. During the midway point of the match, the Lions took the time to welcome back and honor a large collection of alumni, and it gave everyone a chance to collect their thoughts as the action over the next five matches would decide the bout. Coming out of the break, No. 16 Tanner Harvey won via major decision (19-6) over junior Joe Franzese at 184 pounds, pushing American back in front 13-12. But again, the Lions had an answer, with Wustefeld taking down Will Jarrell in a dominating performance that resulted in a 13-4 major decision victory to lock up big bouns points for the Lions, putting the score at 16-13 with three bouts remaining. American would take the next two matches, with sophomore Danny Conley falling via a major decision, 9-1, to Niko Camacho, and sophomore No. 31 Joe Manchio, falling in a tough match to No. 24 Gage Curry, via decision 10-5, giving American a 20-16 lead heading into the final match at 133 pounds, and putting Columbia in a position, due to criteria, where the only road to victory was via a major decision or win via fall. Rini, facing Daniel Kidd, knew the situation and from the second the whistle blew Rini went to work. He scored quickly, and began a strategy of cutting Kidd lose, then working the takedown, and with seconds remaining, and ridding time locked up, Rini nearly pinned Kidd to lock up six points. But the clock hit zero just before the pin, but Rini had already locked up the technical fall victory, 22-7, and his big five points gave the Lions an exciting and team-earned 21-20 victory over American.
