  1. U.S. Lieutenant Colonel Ian H. McBeth A GoFundMe page has been set up for one of three U.S. firefighters killed Thursday when their C-130 Hercules aerial tanker crashed while fighting the wildfires in Australia. The fundraising page was created Friday to help the family of U.S. Lieutenant Colonel Ian H. McBeth, 44, who resided with his wife and children in Montana. "Lieutenant Colonel Ian H. McBeth lost his life tragically when his C-130 Hercules aerial tanker crashed while fighting the wildfires in Australia," according to the text at the GoFundMe page established in his honor. "Though he will be missed dearly, Ian gave his life as he lived it, in service to others and his sacrifice will not be forgotten. "Ian was a loving husband and father to three amazing children. Let us honor Ian's sacrifice by showing his family that they will forever be held in our hearts. "This GoFundMe campaign is dedicated to the benefit and future of the McBeth family. All proceeds will go exclusively toward their immediate needs and the future education of Ian and Bowdie's three children." Ian McBeth leaves behind a wife, Bowdie, and three children, Abigail, Calvin and Ella. According to multiple media reports, Ian McBeth was a multiple-sport athlete at Wray High School in northeast Colorado, a few miles west of the Colorado-Nebraska border. In addition to participating in football and track, McBeth was on the Wray wrestling team. While he was in high school, McBeth also worked as a ranch hand in Nebraska. McBeth served in the Wyoming Air National Guard while a student at the University of Wyoming and later joined the Air National Guard in Montana, where flags were ordered lowered in his honor on Saturday. Montana Gov. Jared Polis released a statement on Thursday night, "My deepest sympathies go out to the family of firefighter Ian McBeth who lost his life volunteering in Australia to fight the wildfires when an aerial water tanker plane crashed in New South Wales Thursday. Ian was a graduate of Wray High School in 1994. Rest In Peace." Ian McBeth's father Bill told the Associated Press his son was "determined, tenacious and tough" and was the most "capable and competent person" he knew. Along with Captain Ian McBeth, also killed in the C-130 crash were first officer Paul Hudson and flight engineer Rick DeMorgan, Jr., according to the Australian Broadcasting Corp. All three worked for Coulson Aviation, a Canadian-based company which had sent firefighters and aircraft to Australia to help extinguish bushfires which have destroyed thousands of acres in the southeast portion of the country.
  2. MINNEAPOLIS -- The Ohio State University wrestling team marched into the Maturi Pavilion and pillaged a 22-13 win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Three bouts featured a pair of top-10 competitors squaring off, all of which went in favor of the Scarlet & Gray. According to the rankings, Minnesota was expected to win six of 10 bouts. Ohio State flipped the script, however, with a half dozen victors. The fourth-ranked (in the NWCA Coaches Poll) Buckeyes improve to 8-2, 4-1 B1G while No. 14 Minnesota drops to 7-5, 2-2 B1G despite a top-5 standing in the tournament-based predictions. Luke Pletcher, Kaleb Romero and Sammy Sasso were responsible for the top-10 triumphs while Ethan Smith, Jordan Decatur and Kollin Moore all accumulated bonus points over their unranked opposition. The evening began at 157 pounds where Ryan Thomas snuck past Elijah Cleary, 3-2. Smith immediately snagged the lead at 165 pounds though, fighting for bonus points from start to finish. He recorded takedown No. 1 right off the whistle to jumpstart the bout before rattling off three third-period takedowns for a 12-4 major decision. Romero's decision for a neutral start versus No. 7 Devin Skatzka out in Vegas last month didn't pay off in a 1-0 setback. He came away without a takedown Sunday night after making the same decision in Period 2. Scoreless heading to the third period with Skatzka's chance to start on bottom once again, the Twitter trolls emerged questioning Romero's decision. The Mechanicsburg, Ohio native muted them in the end though, finishing off his patented blast double late in the period for the bout-winning takedown. Minnesota then secured another one-point decision at 184 pounds, cutting the dual deficit to 7-6. Moore did what Moore does at 197 pounds, banking more bonus points for his Buckeyes. He tech'd Hunter Ritter, 19-3, for his 16th bonus-point performance as a 20-0 senior. Gopher wins in the next two bouts shifted the lead to Minnesota momentarily, 13-12. Ohio State then scored 10 unanswered to leave no doubt with three wins in a row. Decatur ignited the flurry by putting on a takedown clinic and disposing of Jake Gliva, 16-6. Pletcher kept it coming at 141 pounds, moving his season record to 20-0. More than half (11) of those wins have come against top-25 adversaries, including Sunday's 12-6 decision over No. 3 Mitch McKee. Pletcher fell behind 2-0 before securing 12 of the bout's next 16 points. Sasso provided an exclamation point, putting on quite an encore to his unseating of No. 1 Pat Lugo Friday night in Iowa City. Sasso once again flashed elite defensive prowess, fending off fourth-ranked Brayton Lee's offensive advances. The pair of freshman phenoms are quite familiar with each other, splitting two previous collegiate folkstyle meetings (both 6-4 decisions) and clashing several times on the freestyle circuit. Sasso starred in the latest chapter, recording a dramatic 4-2 winner to close out the dual. Results: 157 lbs | Ryan Thomas (MINN) def. 3. Aaron Pico (Photo/Bellator) Former amateur wrestlers Aaron Pico and Darrion Caldwell came out on top in their respective fights at Bellator 238 at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. Saturday night. Pico scored a knockout of Daniel Carey in the opening seconds of the second round of their featherweight (145-pound) bout ... while Caldwell earned a first-round submission over Adam Borics in the Bellator Featherweight World Grand Prix. Aaron Pico's KO "The evolution of Aaron Pico continued on Saturday night as the 23-year-old prospect got back in the win column with a vicious one-punch knockout over Daniel Carey," MMAfighting.com reported. "The end came at just 15 seconds into the second round after Pico demolished Carey with a left hook that rendered him unconscious almost immediately after it landed." "Touted as one of the best prospects in MMA history, Aaron Pico's career has not panned out as hoped thus far, but he sure started off 2020 with a bang," is how Yahoo! Sports opened its coverage of Pico's preliminary-card bout at Bellator 238. "The 23-year-old Pico used his wrestling to control the opening round against Daniel Carey, then went to his boxing to close the show very early into round two. A clubbing left hook whacked Carey on the neck, and down he went," according to Yahoo Sports. Pico made a name for himself as a high school wrestler (winning a state title) and earned medals in international freestyle events but bypassed college competition to launch his pro MMA career in June 2017. He now has a 5-3 MMA record. Corey, 30, is now 7-4. The Wolf makes quick work of his prey "Darrion Caldwell gave unbeaten contender Adam Borics a mean dose of reality as he tormented the Hungarian before quickly dispatching him," according to Sherdog.com. Yahoo Sports weighed in, stating, "Darrion Caldwell took 'The Kid' to school. The Redlands 145-pounder took the fight to undefeated Adam Borics, putting his strength against his weakness to earn a first-round submission win." "Left hands and elbows had the helpless Borics moving his head about, and as he lifted his head, Caldwell pounced on his exposed neck and sunk in a rear-naked choke. Borics had no alternative but to tap out in 2:20." The 32-year-old Caldwell is now 15-3 in his pro career dating back to September 2012 ... while Borics suffers his first loss and drops to 14-1. Prior to launching his MMA career, Caldwell was a two-time NCAA All-American wrestler for North Carolina State. The Wolfpack mat star scored a stunning upset of defending 149-pound champ Brent Metcalf of Iowa in the title bout at the 2009 NCAA Division I championships in what the late amateur wrestling historian Jay Hammond considered to be one of the three biggest upsets in NCAA finals history. Caldwell was named Outstanding Wrestler for that tournament.
  4. PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- When Purdue wrestling sophomore Parker Filius' teammates needed him most he came through, gutting out a 4-2 overtime decision to seal a 20-18 dual victory over Rutgers at the Rutgers Athletics Center on Sunday. Filius' win was 1-of-6 for the Boilermakers on the day as they improved to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in Big Ten Duals on the season. The win marks the third straight road dual victory for head coach Tony Ersland and the Boilermakers in six days and was their first over Rutgers in program history. It was only the fifth meeting between the two schools (fourth since Rutgers joined the Big Ten), and Purdue has now beat 12 of the 13 other conference opponents in a dual. Senior Nate Limmex got things going for the Boilermakers at 149 pounds, using takedowns in each period to knock off Gerard Angelo 9-6, and eighth-ranked freshman Kendall Coleman followed suit at 157 pounds for Purdue, scoring in the first and the third for a 6-2 victory over Mike Van Brill. Purdue's 6-0 lead was wiped with a fall at 165 pounds, but No. 4 senior Dylan Lydy righted the ship at 174 with his 24th win of the season. Lydy turned up the heat in the third period, scoring a trio of takedowns to secure an 11-3 major decision and give the Boilermakers a 10-6 lead. Rutgers picked up back-to-back wins at 184 and 197 as No. 23 Billy Janzer struck in overtime to edge Max Lyon 3-1, and No. 5 senior Christian Brunner was forced to injury default in the third period to No. 18 Jordan Pagano, despite leading 1-0 with a significant riding time advantage and only 1:11 left to wrestle. The nine-point swing pushed Rutgers ahead 15-10 with only four matches left in the dual. No. 25 freshman Thomas Penola started the climb back for the Boilermakers, rallying in the final minute to force overtime and then sealing a 6-4 victory over Matthew Correnti in the extra period. Correnti held a 3-1 edge with riding time late in the third, but Penola escaped and then put the pressure on the Scarlet Knight, scoring a takedown and nearly adding back points before time expired. The pressure continued in overtime as Penola picked up the takedown and the win to make it a 15-13 Rutgers lead. No. 6 junior Devin Schroder tacked on another bonus point win over a ranked opponent at 125 pounds, scoring three takedowns and a reversal in his 9-1 major decision over No. 14 Nic Aguilar. Schroder posted two takedowns in the first, another in the second and reversed Aguilar in the third to hit the 20-win mark on the season and put Purdue back on top 16-15. Rutgers answered at 133 and regained the lead with a 6-0 decision for 10th-ranked Sammy Alvarez over Purdue freshman Travis Ford-Melton, leaving the match in the hands of the respective 141-pound wrestlers for the two teams. Rutgers rookie JoJo Aragona struck first, scoring a first-period takedown to take a 2-1 lead after the first period against Filius. Filius knotted the score in the second with another escape point, leaving the match tied 2-2, but holding a 1:05 riding-time disadvantage as Aragona took the bottom position in the third. Filius put together a monster ride in the third, keeping Aragona on the mat for the full two minutes and forcing the match into overtime. From there Filius kept on the attack, hitting a single-leg shot and then outscrambling Aragona for the finish, the individual win and the team victory. Purdue opens a three-match home stretch Friday, hosting Minnesota in Holloway Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. ET start. The match will air live on BTN+ and FloWrestling. Results: 149: Nate Limmex (PUR) def. 5. Oklahoma State's Nick Piccininni won by major decision at 125 pounds (Photo/Mark Lundy, Lutte-Lens.com) AMES, Iowa -- No. 8 Oklahoma State wrestling (8-2 overall, 4-1 Big 12) closed out its weekend in Iowa with a 23-9 victory against the 16th-ranked Cyclones on Sunday afternoon inside Hilton Coliseum. The outing marked OSU's 13th consecutive dual meet victory against Iowa State. Cowboys Reece Witcraft and Joe Smith collected upset wins for the Cowboys en route to the team's fourth conference victory of the season. At 133 pounds, Witcraft notched a tight 9-8 decision over Iowa State's No. 15 Todd Small. The true freshman scored an escape, a takedown and two-point nearfall to come from behind in the third period and top the Cyclone in only his second win against a ranked wrestler this season. "We did a good job at 133 pounds and other weights where the matches were tight," coach John Smith said. "We did a good job of just following through and getting strong with each period. I thought we did a good job of that today. It was a good team effort, and several individuals gave us some great examples of what we're looking for." Senior Smith won his first dual bout of the year over ISU's 11th-ranked Sam Colbray. With no score after a period, the Cowboy scored the escape quickly in the second and then picked up a pair of takedowns to top Colbray, 5-2. Also garnering a quality win for the Pokes was 125-pounder Nick Piccininni. The senior faced his third ranked opponent on the year in No. 12 Alex Mackall. He picked up a first-period takedown and two-point turn and capped the bout off in the same fashion, winning a 10-2 major decision and his 14th bonus point win this year. Boo Lewallen maintained his perfect record in a bout where he amassed more than five minutes of riding time. The Cowboy scored a pair of takedowns and nearfalls in the match and collected a 13-1 major decision. Ninth-ranked Travis Wittlake advanced to 10-0 in dual action with a 9-4 decision over Cyclone Chase Straw. Joining him with a decision of his own was redshirt freshman Anthony Montalvo. Montalvo took out Marcus Coleman, 6-2, at 184 pounds for the Cowboys. Dakota Geer followed up that win with a 21-8 major decision over Francis Duggan. Geer added to his team-leading 21 takedowns with seven in the bout, including four in the third period. Iowa State freshman David Carr claimed a 14-6 victory at 157 pounds (Photo/Mark Lundy, Lutte-Lens.com) The Cowboys dropped matches at 141, 157 and 285 pounds. Dusty Hone came up short against No. 6 Ian Parker, 5-2. Wyatt Sheets lost a major decision to No. 3 David Carr, and in his second dual outing of the year, Cornelius Putnam dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 14 Gannon Gremmel. 6. BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Redshirt freshman Angelo Martinoni picked up an 11-8 win in the deciding bout, as the CSU Bakersfield wrestling team outlasted Northern Colorado 20-16. The Roadrunners won six of the meet's ten bouts, bouncing back well from a disappointing performance at Wyoming. The win gives the `Runners a split of their weekend trip to the Rocky Mountain region and improves their dual meet record to 3-4 on the season. "This was an important win for us," said Head Coach Manny Rivera. "It was great to see some guys make key adjustments and overall execute much better than we did at Wyoming. We got off to a fast start, which gave us some momentum and seemed to put UNC and their home crowd back on their heels." Bakersfield won the first three bouts of the day to jump out to an early 11-0 lead. Senior Russell Rohlfing continued his dominant weekend, handling Northern Colorado's Ethan Leake from start to finish to earn a 17-0 technical fall victory. Rohlfing scored a takedown and a pair of nearfall points in the first period, before he put the match away in the second with a reversal and six more nearfall tallies. He posted four more points in the third and the match was eventually called with 1:16 remaining. "Every point counts in dual wrestling and this ended up being an especially close dual," noted Rivera. "Russell stepped up for us and scored some critical extra points. He was dominant." Rohlfing finishes his weekend with a pair of wins, outscoring his two opponents 23-0. Wyatt Gerl and Jacob Thalin each posted wins by decision as CSUB took its early advantage. Gerl trailed 2-1 heading into the final frame of his bout. He dominated the third, however, reversing UNC's Nathan Moore and keeping him on the mat the rest of the way for a 7-2 decision. Thalin also trailed by a point entering the third period. He escaped to begin the frame, before scoring a critical take down at the midway point. He buried his opponent, Macoy Flanagan, for the duration of the match to score the ridetime point and pick up a 4-2 victory. The `Runners also received hard-fought wins from Dominic Ducharme and Jarrod Snyder. Ducharme was bloodied early, but still managed to score consistently racking up four take downs in his match with UNC's Seth Bogulski. Snyder needed extra time to pick up the win in an evenly contested contest with Robert Winters Jr. Each wrestler picked up an escape in regulation to send the match to the sudden victory frame tied at one. A scoreless sudden victory stanza set the stage for Snyder to grab his second escape, the eventual bout winner, in the first overtime period. In the second overtime period, he rode Winters for the entire frame to pick up the win. The Bears closed the gap when Jace Koelzer defeated Alex Hernandez-Figueroa at 125 lbs and #10 Mosha Schwartz pinned Chance Rich early in the second period. Bakersfield held a slim 17-16 lead heading into the tenth and final bout of the day at 141 lbs, setting the stage for Martinoni's heroics. Martinoni fell behind in the first period when Northern Colorado's Christopher Sandoval took him to the mat twice for a 4-2 lead. Sandoval chose to start the second period in the neutral position and CSUB's redshirt freshman made him pay with a quick take down and a long ridetime advantage that led to four nearfall points. "Martinoni won on the mat," Rivera concluded. "He turned his opponent and really went to work on top to separate the score in the second." Sandoval picked up two third period takedowns, but Martinoni posted three escapes of his own and won the match by an 11-8 final score. CSUB is back in action next Sunday when they head north to take on their valley rival the Fresno State Bulldogs at 2 p.m. Bakersfield's next home dual is scheduled for Feb. 7 against Pac-12 rival Oregon State. 7. GREEN RIVER, Wyo. -- In front of a raucous crowd of over 1,000 in Green River, the Wyoming wrestling team put on a show during their outreach match, recording four falls while taking care of business over Utah Valley, 37-9. The win makes it a clean weekend sweep for the Pokes in their home-opening duals of the season. Five of the first six matches in the dual ended in pins with four of those belonging to the Cowboys. Jake Svihel (125), Trevor Jeffries (141), Dewey Krueger (157) and Cole Moody (165) earned the falls in the win for the Pokes. "I thought it was great, very thankful for everything that Green River did to put this thing on," said Head Coach Mark Branch. "They packed the gym and it was a great crowd and atmosphere. We got a lot of pins, which was great, especially early on. Bonus points are really important in setting the tone. It gives you some breathing room and allows the guys to feel like they can just go out and wrestle and don't have to worry about the team score." Svihel got things going in his victory, pinning Will Edelblute partway through the third period. Svihel got off to a slow start, falling behind in the bout 6-0 in the first period, before rattling off seven straight points of his own before getting the fall. After Montorie Bridges fell to No. 19 ranked Taylor LaMont to tie the team score at 6-6, Trevor Jeffries pushed the Cowboys back in front with a fall early in the third period over Isaiah Delgado. At the time of the fall, Jeffries was in control of the bout, 12-2. Jaron Jensen was next up and was able to sneak out a 1-0 win over Cameron Hunsaker to put the Cowboys up 15-6. Jensen scored the only point of the match with an escape in the second period. Krueger got the pin party going again at 157 as he stopped Jerry Rubio just 2:09 into their contest. Krueger got to work early in the win with a takedown and two nearfalls to begin the first period before ending things to put UW up 21-6. Moody at 165 made it back-to-back pins as he got the win in just 4:05 over Grant LaMont, to make the team score 27-6. Moody was ahead 9-4 at the time of the fall. After No. 10 Hayden Hastings lost a heartbreaker in Sudden Victory to ninth-ranked Kimball Bastian, 12-5, Tate Samuelson got the Cowboys back on track with an 11-2 major decision over Ashton Seely. Samuelson was able to score seven points in the third period alone to stretch his victory into bonus points. At 197, Stephen Buchanan got a top-20 win as he outlasted No. 19 Tanner Orndorff, 8-3. Buchanan broke a 3-3 tie in the third period with five points in the final period, including a takedown and two-point nearfall in the closing seconds to put the Cowboys up 34-9. Lastly, Brian Andrews was able to control his way to a 4-0 win over Chase Trussell. Andrews got a takedown in the first and then an escape and the riding time bonus point in the third period to close out the dual for the Pokes. "Overall, it was a great dual meet. It hurt to lose a couple of those but it's a learning experience. It was a good conference win and the team's looking better each time we go out and we just have to keep building on it," continued Branch. The Cowboys return to action as they return to the road Jan. 31 at Oregon State for an 8 p.m., MT dual against the Beavers. 8. LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell wrestling team cruised past Sacred Heart, 36-3, and Drexel, 27-2, on Sunday afternoon at Davis Gym. For the second- and third-straight duals, the Bison (6-3, 5-1 EIWA) won nine of 10 bouts to emerge victorious. Darren Miller (133), David Campbell (141), Matthew Kolonia (149), Jaden Fisher (157), Vincent Andreano (165) and Drew Phipps (197) all went 2-0 during the double header. Against the Pioneers (4-3, 2-2 EIWA), Bucknell picked up bonus points in six of its victories, highlighted by a pin by Andreano in his first collegiate dual start. The freshman brought J.C. Broems's shoulders to the mat in 4:30. Geo Barzona (125) staked the Bison an early 5-0 lead, dispatching Sean Faraon by a commanding 18-3 technical fall. By the intermission, Bucknell held a formidable 19-0 lead, bolstered by back-to-back major decisions by Kolonia and Fisher. Drew Phipps and Eric Chakonis (285) closed out the dual with commanding major decisions. Fisher (5:35), Phipps (3:24) and Frankie Guida, Jr. (2:59) all exceeded two minutes of riding time while Miller (1:52), Kolonia (1:33) and Chakonis (1:07) also earned the riding time point. Against the Dragons (6-6, 2-2 EIWA), all but one bout was decided by decision. Of those nine decisions, five were decided by two or fewer points. Fisher accounted for the lone bonus-point victory. The freshman registered eight back points in the third period to dispatch 2019 NCAA qualifier Parker Kropman by a 14-2 major decision; in addition, he rode Kropman out for the entire second period to accumulate an impressive 3:01 of riding time. After ceding the 125-pound match, the Bison proceeded to win the next nine bouts. Miller got the ball rolling with an impressive 7-2 decision over Chase Shields; after Campbell pulled out a gritty 8-5 decision over Tyler Williams, Kolonia made the Davis Gym crowd erupt by posting a takedown and six points in the first minute of his match; those early points proved to be the difference in his 8-3 decision over Jared Donahue. Andreano was an 8-2 victor over Mike Manley. By riding Michael O'Malley out for the entire third period, Mitch Hartman (174) pulled out a 3-2 decision in a chippy, back-and-forth bout. Using the riding time point and a late second period takedown, Kyle Inlander (184) downed Anthony Walters, 8-6. Phipps and Brandon Stokes (285) both won in dramatic fashion to put an exclamation mark on a successful day at Davis Gym. Phipps scored a takedown late in the third period to edge Bryan McLaughlin, 7-5, while Stokes defeated Sean O'Malley in the first sudden victory period, 5-3, on a quick takedown. As they did against Sacred Heart, the Bison racked up plenty of riding time against Drexel. Andreano (3:16), Fisher (3:01), Miller (2:57), Hartman (2:05) and Campbell (2:03) all exceeded two minutes of riding time while Inlander (1:32) also secured the riding time point. In their most recent dual before their double-header routs, the Bison won nine of 10 bouts to drop Brown, 31-3, on Jan. 19. 9. South Dakota State came up with four bonus-point victories to defeat Oklahoma, 23-16, in a Big 12 Conference wrestling dual Sunday afternoon at Frost Arena. The Jackrabbits, who entered the week 24th in the Intermat dual rankings, improved to 7-4 overall and 4-1 against league foes. Oklahoma dropped to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12. Each of the first four matches of the dual resulted in bonus points, with each team winning two. The Sooners got things started as Justin Thomas, ranked 19th at 157 pounds, opened with a 16-3 major decision over Colten Carlson, while 10th-ranked Anthony Mantanona followed two bouts later with a pin of Cade King in the 174-pound bout. SDSU knotted the dual at 10-all behind a pin from 165-pounder Tanner Cook and a 10-0 major decision by 16th-ranked Zach Carlson at 184 pounds. Cook's pin, which came 40 seconds into his match against Jose Lao Cooper, was his 11th of the season, including his sixth in dual action. Carlson's victory, his team-leading 17th of the season, starting a four-match winning streak for the Jackrabbits. Tanner Sloan gave SDSU additional momentum and the lead for good heading into intermission by posting a 4-2 decision over 14th-ranked Jake Woodley. Sloan, who entered the dual ranked 19th at 197 pounds, avenged a loss to Woodley in December at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Heavyweight Blake Wolters opened the second half of the dual by outlasting Josiah Jones, 4-3, in a match that was decided in tiebreakers. The two wrestlers ended regulation tied at 1 before recording escapes in each of the two tie-breaking sessions. Wolters was awarded the decisive point for having a riding-time advantage of 29 seconds in the extra frames. Danny Vega pushed the SDSU lead to 20-10 with the fourth — and final — bonus-point win of the afternoon by the Jackrabbits. Vega raced out to an 8-0 first-period lead via a takedown, four-point near-fall and two-point near-fall against Christian Moody before cruising to a 13-4 major decision. Oklahoma pulled to within 20-16 as two more of its ranked wrestlers notched wins by decision. Anthony Madrigal, the No. 17 wrestler at 133 pounds, shut out the Jackrabbits' Zach Price, 6-0, while seventh-ranked Dom Demas posted an 8-2 victory over Clay Carlson at 141 pounds. The Jackrabbits secured the dual victory with their second win of the day in a matchup between ranked wrestlers. Tenth-ranked Henry Pohlmeyer of SDSU and No. 25 Jacob Butler were tied at 2-all early in the second period before Pohlmeyer grabbed the lead with a reversal later in the stanza. In the third period, Pohlmeyer was awarded a point for stalling and scored on another reversal to record a 7-2 decision. UP NEXT The Jackrabbits begin a stretch of four consecutive duals away from home by traveling Friday to nationally ranked Oklahoma State. 14. CLARION, Pa. -- The Old Dominion wrestling team (6-8, 4-2 MAC) wrapped up its weekend trip to Pennsylvania with a 25-9 win over Clarion (8-5, 5-3 MAC) on Sunday afternoon. Junior 285-pounder Will Hilliard capped off the Monarch victory with a ranked win, taking down No. 27 Ty Bagoly in a 9-3 win by decision in the final bout of the dual. Hilliard jumped ahead of the ranked Golden Eagle early with a takedown and a four-point near-fall less than 30 seconds into the match, giving him a 6-0 advantage. The heavyweight Monarch registered another takedown in the period to hold an 8-1 lead after one frame. Hilliard managed to hang on to his lead, allowing just two more points to Bagoly, to give him his first ranked victory of the season. "We wrestled well today against a tough Clarion team," head coach Steve Martin said after the Monarch win. "The highlight of the day was Hilliard's victory over a nationally-ranked opponent." To start the dual, the Monarchs jumped out to an early 10-0 lead after three bouts, as No. 18 Killian Cardinale, Shannon Hanna II and No. 18 Sa'Derian Perry each earned victories at 125 pounds, 133 pounds and 141 pounds, respectively. Cardinale earned bonus points in his win over Cam Butler, taking a 14-5 win by major decision in the first match of the day. Hanna managed to earn a 5-1 win by decision, earning all five of his points in the third period against Clarion's Jake Gromacki. Perry defeated Brayden Palmer in a 7-1 decision, only allowing an escape point in the third frame of the bout and tallying two minutes and 45 second worth of riding time. At 149 pounds, No. 10 Brock Zacherl got Clarion on the board with a 5-2 win by decision over Kenan Carter, but in the very next bout, No. 14 Larry Early pinned Avery Shay after four minutes and 46 second of action in the 157-pound battle. The pin, Early's second of the season, gave the Monarchs a 13-point lead over the Golden Eagles. After intermission, Shane Jones took a 3-2 lead with a takedown of Mike Bartolo with four seconds remaining in the first period, and never looked back. The senior 165-pounder earned three more points to earn a 6-3 win by decision. At 174 pounds, Max Wohlabaugh managed to get the better of Freshman Alex Cramer, 12-6, bringing the overall score to 19-6. In the 184-pound bout, Antonio Agee earned two takedowns, a reversal and a riding time point to earn an 8-5 win by decision over Christian Sequete, clinching the conference-dual victory for the Monarchs. At 197 pounds, Timothy Young was tasked with facing No. 15 Greg Bulsak. The top-15 wrestler earned a 15-2 major decision victory over the Monarch senior for Clarion's only bonus points of the match. After the Hilliard victory at 285 pounds, the Golden Eagles were docked a point due to an unsportsmanlike penalty, bringing the final score to 25-9. In total, the Monarchs held a 16-12 takedown advantage and earned 14 escape points in the dual. "Cardinale, Hanna, Perry, Early, Jones and Agee all went 2-0 in our two matches this weekend and had consistent performances," Martin said of his wrestlers after an impressive weekend. Up Next After winning their two Mid-American conference (MAC) matches in Pennsylvania against Edinboro and Clarion this weekend, the Monarchs return home next week to take on Virginia Tech on Sunday, February 2 at 1 p.m. The Hokies are currently ranked No. 3 in the nation, according to the National Wrestling Coaching Association (NWCA). 20. Logan Treaster (Jr / Newton, Kan.), Casey Cobb (Jr / Kuna, Idaho), Cody Trybus (Jr / Elkton, Md.), Jacob Koser (Fr / Dillsburg, Pa.) and John Birchmeier (Fr / Ashburn, Va.) each won individual titles to lead the Navy wrestling team to the 2020 All-Academy Championship crown Saturday at East Gym in Colorado Springs, Colo. It marked the Mids' 16th overall All-Academy Championship victory and their third in a row. Trailing 114.5-108.0 with two matches remaining, Navy rallied behind the efforts of Koser and Birchmeier. Koser, who not only went 3-0 on the day, but he did not give up a point, got the Mids to within two points following his 16-0 tech fall over VMI's Zach Brown in the 197-pound title match. Birchmeier, who has twice secured dual victories for the Mids this season (Maryland and Bucknell), sealed the team victory by way of his 10-4 win over Air Force's Kayne Hutchison in the final match of the evening. Navy (117.5) won the team crown by ONE point over second-place Air Force (116.5), who had three wrestlers win individual titles. VMI placed third (48.0), followed by Coast Guard (47.5), The Citadel (34.0), Merchant Marine (18.5) and Norwich (12.5). VMI and Coast Guard both crowned an individual champion. Koser was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler, while Treaster was the recipient of the Most Pins in Fewest Amount of Time Award with two in 2:15. "I am very proud of the team and its performance today. The character and resiliency our wrestlers showed bout after bout in tonight's medal matches was incredibly impressive," said sixth-year Navy head coach Joel Sharratt. "The team came together and knew we had only seven in the finals, but five of those where important head-to-head bouts. Starting out with three strong wins really set a great tone for the big guys to follow. It took all 10 guys to get today's title and many of the names out there today weren't familiar to our casual fans. We really had the NEXT MAN UP guys step in and perfrom well for the team and overall team score." The Highlights • Navy has been the dominant team, winning 16 of the 26 championships including 13 of the last 17. • The Mids have won 103 individual crowns in All-Academy Championship history, including 77 of the 170 titles over the last 17 years. • The Mids won the team title in 1995, `97, `99, `04, `05, `06, `07, `09, '10, '11, '12, '13, '14, '18,'19 and '20, while they claimed five or more individual titles in 1997, `99, `04, `05, `07, `08, '10, '11, '13, '17, '18, '19 and '20. • Four of the five Mids who claimed individual titles were first-time All-Academy Championship winners - Logan Treaster (125), Cody Trybus (141), Jacob Koser (197) and John Birchmeier (285). • Junior Casey Cobb (133) earned his second All-Academy Championship in as many appearances. He is the 24th Navy wrestler to win at least two All-Academy Championship titles. • It was the first appearance at the All-Academy Championship for six Navy wrestlers - Logan Treaster (125), Wyatt Long (149), Jack Stanton-Taddeo (157), Andrew Buckley (184), Jacob Koser (197) and John Birchmeier (285). • Jacob Koser (197) and John Birchmeier (285) are just the 10th and 11th freshmen in Navy history to win an individual title at the All-Academy Championship and the first since Jared Prince in 2017. It's the first time Navy has had two freshmen win in the same year. It's also the first time a Navy freshman has won at the two heaviest weights. • A remarkable 13 of the 25 individual victories by Navy today were bonus-point matches. Jacob Koser (197) earned bonus points for all three of his victories - one by fall and two by tech fall. More from Coach Sharratt • Cobb (133) and Trybus (141) are finding their stride at the right time and they make an impressive start to every competition. I felt like the All-Academies was a great showcase of their talent tonight. • Koser (197) being named the Outstanding Wrestler of the All-Academy Championship is a testament to the competitor he is on the mat every time he steps out there. He continues to improve each week and that's being recognized in results and national spotlight. • Treaster also had an impressive performance with dominating victories to the finals and a battle against two of the highest ranked wrestlers in the field. • Birchmeier opened up and was extremely driven to put points on the board to seal the team victory. His roll through cradle and strong position leg attacks combined with his agility make him a big threat in competition. What's Ahead • Navy returns to dual action next weekend when it faces EIWA foes American and Drexel on back-to-back days. • The Mids travel to Washington, D.C. on Friday, Feb. 31 to battle American (7:00 pm) and then make the trip on Saturday to Philadelphia, Pa. for a 4:00 pm match at Drexel. • Navy will also send a handful of wrestlers to compete at the Edinboro Open on Saturday, Feb. 1 (9:00 am). Quotes & Notes "It's a great class. When you have that many kids in your senior class, you're doing something right in your program. Eight kids out of that – and hopefully we get two of them back next year with an extra year with Jesse and with Pete – but it speaks to the volume of those kids. That they've bought into the program, that they've put the program on their back, that they've done all the right things for the longest time and they've contributed to make this program as successful as it's been, credit to them. It's always hard to lose senior leadership of that nature. But hopefully they pass their lessons on to the younger kids and, as it's their turn, they are ready to duplicate the success and demeanor of captains and seniors." – Rider Head Coach John Hangey - With the win, the Broncs now lead the all-time series with George Mason, 17-1, including wins in each of the last 11 duals. - Prior to the match, the Broncs honored their eight-member senior class, consisting of Dellavecchia, Dinmore, Sherry, Cloud, Lipari, Anthony Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park Regional [South Dakota State]), Gino Fluri (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren Regional) and Jim Brady (Egg Harbor City, NJ/St. Augustine Prep). - Rider returns to action on Friday, Feb. 7, when it travel to Lock Haven and the Thomas Fieldhouse for a dual set to begin at 7 p.m. Results: 157: #4 Jesse Dellavecchia (RID) dec. 23. COLUMBIA, Mo. -- No. 24 Mizzou Wrestling claimed its ninth consecutive conference championship after defeating Cleveland State, 20-12, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 25) in the second of a dual doubleheader at the Hearnes Center. The Tigers are now 10-5 on the season and a perfect 7-0 in MAC competition. At 7-0, Mizzou is the only remaining unbeaten in the conference and has clinched a share of the MAC Championship, its eighth straight since joining the league. Only Rider (5-1 MAC) can share the title with the Tigers. Should Mizzou defeat SIU-Edwardsville in its MAC finale on Feb. 12, it will win the title outright. "I don't keep count of those things," head coach Brian Smith said of Mizzou's 21-dual win streak in the MAC and the program's ninth straight conference title. "It's nice that we keep doing that stuff. It's something that we expect to happen, we are going out there and competing. It's good because it gets media to write about it. It's fun to see that for the kids, but we just need to keep working. We've won a couple matches in a row – I want to see us keep improving and getting better." Mizzou's streak of conference championships began with a tournament title at the 2012 Big 12 Championships during the school's final year in the league. Since joining the MAC, the Tigers have won the last eight championships. The MAC Tournament will be held March 7-8 in Dekalb, Ill. Looking at the Cleveland State dual, it opened with a hard-fought 12-10 loss at 125 pounds by Cameron Valdiviez to CSU's Logan Heil. But Allan Hart got Mizzou back in the win column as he completed a perfect day at 133 pounds with a 6-1 win over CSU's Justin Patrick. Hart tallied 4:11 of riding time in the bout as he was dominant for all seven minutes.
