The Spartans used bonus-point wins by redshirt junior Alex Hrisopoulos and redshirt freshman Layne Malczewski en route to the victory. With the win, the Spartans improve to 8-9 overall and 6-2 in non-conference duals, while Cleveland State falls to 9-6 overall. "The guys took care of business today," said Spartan wrestling head coach Roger Chandler. "That's a much improved Cleveland State team that what we saw last year. There is no doubt we left some points out there but I know our guys will adjust and be ready to go next week for our final dual of the year. Redshirt senior Logan Griffin started the dual for the Spartans against Cleveland State's Logan Heil at 125 pounds. Griffin fought back from a 2-1 deficit after one to take a 4-2 lead after two periods with a takedown and two escapes. Heil started the third period with a takedown to tie the match at four and tallied a four-point near-fall on his way to a 9-4 win over Griffin. At 133 pounds, redshirt senior Garrett Pepple put the Spartans on the board with a decision over Justin Patrick. Pepple and Patrick wrestled a defensive first period, with Pepple taking a 1-0 advantage into the second period after and early escape point. After a scoreless second period for both, Pepple registered another escape to jump out to a 2-0 lead 15 seconds into the third period. Pepple fought off a couple late shots by Patrick to secure the 2-0 decision. Redshirt junior Matt Santos took on Evan Cheek at 141 pounds. Cheek, who leads the team with 31 wins, recorded three early takedowns in the first frame to take a 6-2 lead over Santos after one. Cheek grabbed the only points in the second period with an escape to push his lead to 7-2 after two. With an early takedown to begin the dual, Hughes took a 2-1 lead over Smucker after one. No score after two kept the score at 2-1 in favor of Hughes and he rode out the third in the top position on his way to a 3-1 decision with the riding time point. Malczewski gave the Spartans a 19-6 lead with his second fall in as many matches. Malczewski rushed out to a quick 4-1 lead after one period with two takedowns . With the win, Malczewski improves to 21-11 on the season with five falls. "I'm really happy with the mindset that Layne Malczewski is competing with right now," said Chandler. "He's looking to dominate matches and he is doing that because he expects that out of himself." At 184 pounds, Cam Caffey reeled off his ninth-straight win on the season and the fifth in a row on the day for the Spartans with a narrow 6-5 decision over a scrappy DeAndre Nassar. Nassar struck early and gained the lead on Caffey through three minutes, but Caffey answered with a takedown and escape of his own in the second period to lead 4-3. Nassar tied it at four at the beginning of the third with an escape and Caffey countered with a late takedown to secure his 24th win of the season. 12. PHILADELPHIA -- Drexel wrestling sent out its seven-member senior class in grand fashion with a 27-15 win over nearby rival Penn in the Battle for the Cheesesteak Trophy. Saturday night's win at the Daskalakis Athletic Center is the fifth in a row against the Quakers. Prior to the action, Drexel paid tribute to departing grapplers Dakota Greene, Brendan Hasson, Michah Watson, Henry Williams, Owen Brooks, Nick Widmann and Ebed Jarrell. It was an inauspicious start to the night for the Dragons (7-10, 3-5 EIWA) as the Quakers (5-8, 4-5) scored a pair of major decisions at 141 and 149 pounds to jump out to an 8-0 lead. However, Drexel called Penn and raised its opponent in a big way. Parker Kropman put the Dragons on the board with a fall against Jon Errico. The 33rd-ranked 157-pounder executed a single-underhook throw from standing to put his opponent in a vulnerable position and eventually squared Errico's shoulders to the mat with just three seconds left in the opening period. Down 8-6, No. 18 Jarrell sent Drexel ahead for good with a first-period fall of his own. Like Kropman, Jarrell finished the match in a flash, going from a neutral position to a winning one in one fell swoop. With double underhooks, he tossed Jake Lizak to the mat and stuck his shoulders to the ground with just under one minute remaining in the first. In a night to remember for the redshirt-senior, Jarrell notched the 74th victory of his career and his 21st win by fall, moving him into a two-way tie with Jason Staso (1999-02) for the ninth most in program history. Sticking to script, 27th-ranked Michael O'Malley shot out of the gates at 174 pounds, hunting another bonus-point victory. As is often the case, the redshirt-freshman took down Neil Antrassian early then went to work on the ground. Only this time, O'Malley could not turn his foe and settled for a 2-0 lead after the first period. The grapplers started on their feet in the second period, but neither side could score. O'Malley tacked on an escape point in the third and collected the riding time point for a 4-0 decision and his 16th win of the season. John Stout stopped Drexel's run with a decision victory at 184 pounds. After six bouts, the Dragons' lead was 15-11. The Dragons earned a pair of hard-fought decisions at 197 pounds and heavyweight to shut the door on the Quakers. 17. Last Sunday's win over Cornell ended a long skid against the Big Red, a long drought without an Ivy League title, and Cornell's 92-match, 18-year Ivy League winning streak. Saturday in Dillon Gym, the Tigers arrived knowing they'd have at least a share of the Ivy League title, but a win over Penn would mean that title would be all Princeton's. The Tigers went right to work in taking care of that outright title, winning the first seven matches on the way to a 33-6 victory. Right after, Princeton turned around to complete a sweep of Philadelphia's two Division I programs, knocking off Drexel 22-16. The Penn win and the 5-0 sweep of the Ivy League gave Princeton its first perfect Ivy League season since 1986, which was also Princeton's last Ivy title year. With the Ivy and Philadelphia sweeps in hand, Princeton will look for a New Jersey sweep for the first time since the 1982-83 season when Rutgers visits Jadwin Gym. Tickets are available here. "Chip (Kainalu) was inspirational for us. To go out and pin a tough opponent like that was huge and I'm very proud of him for going out doing exactly what we wanted him to do. "I was also pleased with how our seniors wrestled -- with Kimball and Tanner both picking up extra points for us -- as well as how Taylor was able to make a great adjustment to beat another top-20 opponent tonight." Filling in for UVU on the night and in his first dual match of his collegiate career, 141-pound redshirt freshman Estrella got the Wolverines off to a strong start by coming through with a second period fall over UNC's Brody Lamb to give UVU a 6-0 advantage. With the Hawaii native Estrella holding to an 8-5 lead in the second, the Wolverine redshirt freshman put the match away with a throw and a quick pin (4:41) to give UVU the early lead. The Bears then answered back with a trio of consecutive wins by decision from No. 10 Andrew Alirez (149), Jimmy Fate (157) and No. 31 Austin Matthews (165) to take a 9-6 advantage in the team score. Both Jed Loveless (157) and Koy Wilkinson (165) attempted to make a couple of late comebacks in their bouts, but in the end their opponents managed to hold on to record respective 5-3 and 9-7 decisions. In his final home match of his stellar career, the two-time NCAA qualifier Bastian struck back for the Wolverines with an 11-2 major decision over Billy Higgins to give UVU a 10-9 lead. With Bastian holding to a 7-2 lead midway through the third, the ninth-ranked senior made his move with a stall point, followed by his fourth takedown of the match and an additional riding time point to earn the major decision and improve to 12-6 on the season. Then in a tightly contested match at 184-pounds, UVU's Ashton Seely looked to score the upset over No. 23 Alan Clothier but in the end Clothier managed to escape with a 7-6 decision. Trailing 7-3 in the third, Seely recorded a takedown and a late stall point to pull within one but Clothier managed to hold on to give the Bears a 12-10 lead. Then in senior Tanner Orndroff's final match at home, the 19th-ranked UVU three-time NCAA qualifier too earned a bonus-point win with a 14-4 major decision over UNC's Xavier Vasquez to give Utah Valley a 14-12 advantage. Up 6-2 in the final period, Orndorff earned the major with three more takedowns, a stall point and an impressive tally of 4:00 minutes of riding time to improve to 11-8 on the year. UVU then added to its lead at heavyweight thanks to a 2-0 decision from No. 4 Tate Orndorff over UNC's Robert Winters. After riding out Winters in the second stanza, Orndorff followed with an escape and riding time in the third to improve to 15-2 on the season and give the Wolverines a 17-12 lead on the team score. A 14-1 major decision from UNC 125-pounder Jace Koelzer then made it 17-16 heading into the final match of the night between No. 11 Taylor LaMont and No. 18 Mosha Schwartz. Schwartz struck first in the 133-pound marquee match with an early takedown, but the UVU 2018 NCAA qualifier LaMont answered with an escape and a takedown to pit the match at 3-3 at the end of the opening period. Later knotted at 6-6 in the second, LaMont then got in on a couple of shots to take a 10-7 lead at the end of two. Schwartz then recorded a reversal in the third to make it 10-9, but LaMont responded with an escape to hold on to win by a score of 11-9. LaMont improves to 12-5 on the year with his third victory over a top-20 opponent in the last three weeks. "All day today I was thinking about how this would be my last match at home, and it's been kind of bittersweet. But to come out win my final home match and have my team perform this well was just sweet," 174-pound senior Bastian said. "I got kind of emotional there during the nation anthem, but it felt good to come out and take care of business in front of my family." The contest marked UVU's final home match of the 2019-20 season and snapped a 10-match skid for the short-handed Wolverines that have been without returning NCAA qualifiers Matt Findlay (149) and Demetrius Romero (165) all season due to injuries. UVU will now head on the road next week for their final two regular season duals of the year. The Wolverines will first face Ohio in non-conference action on Friday, Feb. 21, before facing Big 12 foe West Virginia in Morgantown on Sunday, Feb. 23. The 2020 Big 12 Championships will then follow on March 7-8 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. 22. Loras defeated Wartburg to claim the A-R-C championship (Photo/Loras College Athletics) WAVERLY, Iowa -- In a rematch of last years American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) championship , the No. 3 Loras College Duhawks made history Friday night by capturing the program's first conference title, defeating No. 1 Wartburg 19-17 in a thrilling back-and-forth dual. The Duhawk victory snapped Wartburg's run of 27-consecutive conference titles that dated back to 1994 and also handed the Knights their first loss ever at Levick Arena. Head Coach TJ Miller, who wrestled for Wartburg and was coached by his father, put a high emphasis on the importance of what the win means for Loras College. "It means a lot to Loras College. I told my team that at some point the streak has to be ended, so why not us" said Miller. "My father started the streak a long time ago. It's been tough to break. I feel relieved, it means so much to not just our guys, but our alumni, boosters, faculty, staff and administration. It's awesome". The A-R-C championship started on a sour note for the Duhawks, who trailed 7-0 heading into a battle of top grapplers at 141-pounds. Senior and two-time All-American No. 6/4 Clint Lembeck put the Duhawks on the board by defeating No. 4/6 Brady Fritz in a tightly contested match. Facing a 2-0 deficit in the third period, Lembeck used a series of near-fall to complete the third-period comeback with a 5-4 victory at 141-pounds. Continuing the momentum for the Duhawks was Daniel Ruiz who scored a thrilling overtime victory over former National Champion Brock Rathbun at 149-lbs. Locked at two points each after three periods, Ruiz claimed the deciding takedown midway through the overtime period to come away with the 4-2 decision. Senior All-American No. 4/2 Brandon Murray silenced the Knight crowd by recording a third-period fall over Shea Hartzler at 157-lbs. Murray used a plethora of points to build an early lead over Hartzler before pinning his opponent in the third. The fall put the Duhawks in the lead 12-7, yet Wartburg closed the gap by securing a victory at 165-pounds. After suffering a first-period takedown, returning All-American No. 5/5 Jacob Krakow battled back to claim an 8-2 decision over Warthburg's Paul Calo. The win for Krakow put the team score to 15-10 for the Duhawks. Following a setback at 184 lbs., senior and the No.1 ranked 197-lbs. wrestler in the country Guy Patron Jr. kept his undefeated senior campaign intact by cruising to a major decision over No. 3/4 Kobe Woods at 197-lbs. A Wartburg decision at heavyweight closed the gap but it was too little too late for the Knights, who's 27-year reign over the conference was put to an end courtesy of the Duhawks by a score of 19-17. After locking up their first conference title in program history, the Duhawks will take two weeks off before kicking off the postseason at the NCAA Lower Midwest Regional. 24. DEKALB, Ill. -- The Northern Illinois University wrestling team posted a dramatic come-from-behind victory over Mid-American Conference foe Buffalo in Victor E. Court Friday night. The Huskies (12-4, 7-2) scored a 19-16 victory over the Bulls in a contest that featured four overtime matches, three bonus point wins and went down to the final match. With the match tied, 16-16, headed into the final bout of the night, reigning MAC West Wrestler of the Week Max Ihry scored the match-clinching victory when he defeated Nolan Terrance, 3-2, at 285. After wrestling to a 0-0 tie in the first period, Ihry and Nolan exchanged escape points to force overtime. Neither wrestler could score a point in the first overtime period, so Ihry took a 2-1 lead after an escape in the second overtime session. Terrance returned the favor in the third overtime with an escape of his own. After Ihry scored an escape in the first tiebreaker, Terrance chose neutral and Ihry was able to stay on his feet to score the win. "When you get into these conference dual meets, these are hard-fought scrappy battles," said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. "We knew that coming in. Quite frankly, we didn't have the start we wanted. We had to respond and come out of that locker room in the second half with renewed attitude and renewed spark and energy." NIU dug themselves and early 10-3 hole after dropping two of the first three bouts of the night, one by maj. dec. and the second by fall. McCoy Kent stemmed the tied when he earned a 6-4 victory at 149 in overtime to cut the Buffalo lead to 10-6. However, Mason Kauffman dropped his match at 157 and the Huskies went into halftime trailing, 13-6. Izzak Olejnik set the tone in the second half with a 5-3 victory over Troy Keller at 165. Olejnik's victory sparked a Huskie run. A third-period surge by Kenny Moore proved to be the difference in his bout at 174. "Kudos to Izzak for getting arguably the biggest win of his year thus far," Ludwig said. "Keller was highly-ranked and a returning MAC champ. He got us started. That was a huge momentum shift for us." Moore jumped out to a 2-1 first period lead, however, Bryson Alsteen tied the match with a second period escape. Moore asserted himself in the third peiord. After an escape he earned a takedown and two nearfall points to take a 5-2 lead. His riding time gave him an extra point after the match. Brit Wilson was solid at 184, earning the Huskies their lone bonus-point victory of the night. He scored a 9-1 victory over Peter Acciardi. Bryce West gave NIU a 3-0 lead when he scored a 7-1 decision over Buffalo's Jordan Reyes at 125 in the first match of the night. The Huskies return to action Friday, Feb. 21 when NIU welcomes Drexel to Victor E. Court for Senior Night. The match begins at 7 p.m. and will be shown on NIUTube on NIUHuskies.com. 25. NORMAN -- Oklahoma used three major decisions and wins from all five of its ranked wrestlers to defeat Air Force, 24-10, inside McCasland Field House on Friday night. The win snapped a four-match losing streak for the Sooners (4-6 overall, 2-5 Big 12), who took the lead after the third bout of the night and never looked back, as the program improved to 5-0 all-time versus Air Force (4-6 overall, 1-5 Big 12). "Overall, I'm pleased because college wrestling is tough," head coach Lou Rosselli said after the win. "We have a lot of young guys in there. I was glad to see some people getting some bonus points. We still have to build our leads, and still have some things we can work on. There was a lot of good things and it was a good win." The dual got started at 165 when Air Force's Vincent Dolce earned a major decision victory over Elijah Joseph to put the Falcons up 4-0, but the Sooners got the ball rolling after the opening bout. At 174, No. 12 Anthony Mantanona got his eighth win of the dual season when he defeated Cody Surratt via 10-3 decision. Mantanona held a 2-1 lead after two periods, but turned it on in the final frame, as he secured a trio of takedowns, an escape point and a bonus point for riding time. Up next on the mat for the Sooners was freshman Darrien Roberts at 184. As the final seconds of the second period ticked away Roberts collected a takedown of Air Force's Jake Thompson to take a 4-2 lead that held for the remainder of the bout. Roberts' win moved him 5-5 in dual action this year and 11-9 overall. More importantly, it gave the Sooners a 6-4 lead that they wouldn't surrender. "What's impressive about Darrien's win is that he is a true freshman and every win you get is a big win." Rosselli said. "There was a clip in that match for about 30 seconds where he just fought. If he had stopped wrestling, he could've lost, but he just kept fighting and so he won. Good guys find ways to win, so I'm really pleased with him." At 197, No. 15 Jake Woodley controlled his bout with Casey Jumps from the start en route to a 16-5 major decision. The bonus point victory was Woodley's third of the season, as he joined four other Sooners with seven wins in dual action. The Sooners dropped the next bout at 285, after Collin McCoy suffered a tough 8-7 defeat to Kayne Hutchinson, bringing the score to a 10-7 OU advantage at the break. When the teams returned to the mat, Christian Moody took the floor for Oklahoma at 125. The redshirt senior earned his 58th career victory via a 13-4 major decision. The major decision was the Collinsville, Okla., native's first of the season as he improved to 3-5 in duals this year. Moody's win marked the start of three straight victories for the Sooners, as OU looked to finish the Falcons. No. 15 Anthony Madrigal took care of Air Force's Jared Van Vleet at 133, via a 7-2 decision to put the Sooners up 17-7 with just three bouts left on the card. Madrigal was followed up by a 11-5 decision from No. 7 Dom Demas, clinching the OU victory. The reigning Big 12 champion took down Air Force's Lenny Petersen five times in the bout, as he improved to 21-3 on the year and 9-1 in duals. At 149, Jacob Butler dropped a close bout to Air Force's Dylan Martinez, 4-2. The two wrestlers were tied at 2-2 heading into the final frame, but Butler was taken down midway through the final frame and ran out of time to tie it up, giving Air Force the decision. The final match of the dual featured the most dominating performance of the night as No. 22 Justin Thomas blanked Air Force's Trey Brisker en route to a 10-0 major decision. Thomas has been on a tear over the past two months, going 7-1 in those bouts and winning the last four by either major decision or fall. The victory finalized the score at 24-10, giving the Sooners their second Big 12 win of the season. UP NEXT The Sooners are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 16 when they travel to Stillwater for the second Bedlam dual of the season. The dual starts at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU. "They've got a good team, we've got to be ready to compete." Rosselli said of the Cowboys. "There are some really fun matchups, and we'll see who comes ready to wrestle and who wants to fight for seven minutes. It's another opportunity to compete." Oklahoma will then wrap up its regular season on Sunday, Feb. 23 when it hosts Fresno State at 2 p.m. inside McCasland Field House. Tickets for Oklahoma's last home dual can be purchased online or by calling the OU Athletics Ticket Office at (405) 325-2424.
