  1. Dana jumped out to a 10-0 lead after two matches and then hung on to edge Augustana 20-17 wrestling victory in a battle of the Vikings Friday night at the Elmen Center. Dana, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA national rankings, improved to 15-1-1, while Augustana, ranked fifth in NCAA Division II, fell to 9-4. Burke Barnes and Jimmy Rollins got Dana off to the good start. Barnes scored a 20-10 major decision over Chris Trampe and Rollins, ranked No. 2 in NAIA, pinned Mike Long in 4:18 to stake the visitors to a 10-0 lead. Augustana then turned to seniors Andre VanderVelde and Ryan King and both delivered key wins. VanderVelde, ranked No. 6 in Division II, trailed No. 7 Terrence Almond 2-1 after one period, but then turned up the heat in the final two periods to record a 26-11 technical fall. With Almond fatigued, VanderVelde scored a series of takedowns to build his lead. King, ranked No. 2 at 149 pounds, kept Augie close with a dramatic 7-5 overtime win over No. 6 Anthony Haukenberry, the defending NAIA national champion. The score was tied 5-5 at the end of regulation. In overtime, the two wrestlers locked up in a spot where either wrestler could score the winning takedown. Eventually, King got the takedown with 30 seconds left on the clock to pick up his 98th career victory and draw Augie to within 2 points at 10-8. Danas Scott Taylor then edged Augies Aaron Haddorff 11-6 at 157 pounds before Cody Henriksen downed Ben Henderson 9-5 at 165 pounds to make the score 13-11. After that the Sooners scored big wins from No. 10 Matt Storniolo, No. 12 Wes Roberts and No. 13 Justin Dyer. Storniolo scored a major decision, 8-0, over Pat Payne in the 149 pound match. Roberts defeated Chris Resmen by a technical fall, 19-3, in the 174 pound match. Dyer also scored a technical fall, 21-6, over No. 8 C.B. Dollaway at 184 pounds. "The last few weeks have been really tough, but I had a good week of practice," said Dyer. "I was able to get in and watch a lot of film with the coaches this week and that made a big difference." Also scoring for the Sooners was No. 4 Joel Flaggert defeating No. 10 Ryan Bader by a decision of 8-1 in their 197 pound match. "Joel wrestled exceptional tonight and it was the best I have seen him wrestle all year," continued Spates. "Justin was very impressive against a quality opponent (No. 8 C.B. Dollaway), overall I was very pleased." Next up for the Sooners is a trip to Columbia, Mo. on Sunday to face No. 12/14 Missouri for a 1 p.m. match at the Hearnes Center. 3. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- With the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team trailing by five points entering the final bout, fifth-year senior captain Greg Wagner (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider HS) earned a fall at heavyweight to secure a narrow 18-17 victory over No. 3 Illinois on Friday (Feb. 3) at Huff Hall. Wagner's bonus points proved the deciding factor as the two squads split matches at five apiece. The Wolverines' fate has come down on Wagner's shoulders three times this season, and the U-M heavyweight has pulled out a victory on each occasion. Squaring off against the Fighting Illini's Matt Weight in the final match of the contest and needing a fall to pull out the Michigan win, Wagner controlled from start to finish after gaining the initial advantage with a takedown late in the first period. Starting the second frame on the mat, Wagner scored quickly on a reversal, and, as Weight worked up to his feet, the U-M heavyweight swept out his leg to dump the Illini wrestler to his back, posting his fourth fall of the season at the 3:51 mark. The lead went back and forth between the two teams throughout the meet. Illinois struck first with a victory at 125 pounds as Kyle Ott scored a 18-6 major decision against freshman Michael Watts (Riverton, Utah/Riverton HS). The Wolverines rallied, however, earning three straight victories at the subsequent weights to steal away the lead and build up a five-point advantage nearing the midway point. Senior/junior Mark Moos (Lorain, Ohio/St. Edward HS) initiated the early charge, taking immediate control of hsi 133-pound bout against Gabe Flores, scoring on a takedown just 14 seconds into the match and cruising to a 9-3 decision. Moos added a pair of second-period reversals and another takedown in the third and accumulated 3:19 in riding time to claim his ninth straight dual victory. Junior/sophomore Josh Churella (Northville, Mich./Novi HS) had similar success against the Illini's Casio Pero at 141 pounds, breaking open the match in the second period en route to an 8-2 win. After a scoreless opening frame, Churella struck first midway through the match with a quick second-period reversal and takedown. He registered another two takedowns in the third and earned 1:16 in riding-time advantage. Junior/sophomore Eric Tannenbaum (Naperville, Ill./North HS) persevered through a battle against Troy Tirapelle at 149 pounds, posting a solid third period to earn the final 8-6 edge. Tannenbaum lead early in the match behind a pair of first-period takedowns, but Tirapelle controlled the second period to sneak back into the match and knot things at four points apiece. Starting the third frame in the down position, Tannenbaum earned a quick escape and took the lead for good with a takedown late in the frame. He gave up a reversal following a scramble in the closing seconds but netted an escape point to hang on for victory. Illinois won at 157 pounds as top-ranked Alex Tirapelle earned a 7-1 decision against sophomore/freshman Steve Luke (Massillon, Ohio/Perry HS) in a rematch of the Cliff Keen Invitational championship bout won by Luke. Fifth-year senior captain Ryan Churella (Northville, Mich./Novi HS) re-established the Wolverines' five-point lead with a close 7-6 overtime victory over Mark Poeta at 165 pounds. Churella scored twice in the first period to take an early advantage, but Poeta neutralized the score with takedowns in the waning moments of both the second and third frames to force overtime. Poeta was in on a double leg late in the extra period when his hand got wrapped up in Churella's kneepad, resulting in an illegal hold call and a point awarded to Churella. The Wolverines wrap up the weekend road series against Purdue on Sunday (Feb. 5) in West Lafayette, Ind. 4. STILLWATER, Okla. (http://www.okstate.com/) -- Brandon Mason recorded the biggest win in his young Cowboy career defeating third-ranked Jacob Klein, sparking second-ranked Oklahoma State (13-1, 4-0) to a 27-15 victory over fifth-ranked Nebraska (11-4, 1-1) inside Gallagher-Iba Arena on Friday night. Brandon Mason defeated Jacob Klein.Mason avoided being ridden out in the second period by reversing Klein to put the first points on the board. Klein got too aggressive in the third period trying to tie the match and Mason countered to scored the takedown to seal the match. "I knew I had to get out," Mason said afterward. "His gameplan was to pick feet in the third and ride me out in the second. The reversal changed the complexion of the match. "This is a stepping stone for me. Every match I am trying to get better. Nothing matters until Big 12s or nationals anyway. I am just trying to get better and improve myself so that I am ready to go at nationals." Rusty Blackmon followed Mason's big win with an upset of his own. Blackmon defeated 10th-ranked Vince Jones with an 8-4 decision. Blackmon dominated Jones from the top position riding out the entire second period and collecting three near fall points in the process. Blackmon was so dominant from the top position that he used his option to take top. Jones managed to score a reversal late to make the score appear closer. "There were some good matches tonight and it was good to see some fire in our belly at 174 and 184," head coach John Smith said. "It seems like we have not had one of those where somebody step up and get an upset and they both got it done tonight." The Cowboys were in control at this point leading the dual 15-3 after five matches. Zack Esposito started things off with a technical fall at 149. Chris Oliver won a decision over Kevin Ward and Johny Hendricks added a major decision over Marc Harwood. The most anticipated bout of the night was at 197 where second-ranked Jake Rosholt No. 5 B.J. Padden. Rosholt was the aggressor early scoring a quick takedown 20 seconds into the match. Padden gave up a penalty point for an elbow but quickly tightened it up with a reversal. Padden added another reversal in the second period and the match was tied after a Rosholt escape. The Match turned screwy in the third period. Rosholt escaped and took a shot and a scramble ensued. Each wrestler had a leg with no control but Rosholt was on his head and rolled onto his shoulders and official Jim Rimirez slapped the mat signaling a fall. Steve Mocco pinned Jon May.Steve Mocco got it back for the Cowboys with a fall in 42 seconds over Jon May, and the two sophomores Coleman Scott and Nathan Morgan continue to win each recording decisions. Dominick Moyer closed out the dual with a second period fall over Justin Porter who was wrestling up a weight. Head coach John Smith was pleased with his team's performance afterwards, but was disappointed the Cowboys gave up 15 points after allowing just one takedown for Nebraska. Nebraska's lone takedown was a foot sweep by 133-pounder Patrick Aleksanyan that caught Nathan Morgan off guard just six seconds into the match. "I was disappointed that we gave up 15 points and they only got one takedown," Smith said. That tells me we are flipping and flopping on the mat way too much. We got pinned in two matches where we did not give up a takedown. Those are mistakes that you can go back and correct. The Cowboys will return to the mat on Friday when Hofstra visits Stillwater for a 7 p.m. dual. OSU will then look to avenge its only loss at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City on Sunday against top-ranked Minnesota in a dual televised by ESPNU. With Northwestern cruising, No. 18 Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) faced Ohio State's Nathaniel Augustson at 165 lbs. With Northwestern leading 22-3, sophomore All-American Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) took the match for the 'Cats and dominated from beginning to end. Herbert notched his first takedown not even 30 seconds into the match versus OSU's 19th-ranked Blake Maurer. Eleventh-ranked Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) came close, but fell to OSU's Alex Picazo. After tallying an early takedown, Tamillow ended the first period with a 2-1 lead. He extended his lead to 3-1 by earning an escape to begin the second, but Picazo came back with a third-period escape to make the score 3-2. With under 20 seconds remaining, Picazo tallied a takedown and three-point nearfall to edge Tamillow 7-3. With Northwestern still comfortably in the lead, No. 12 Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) notched his 100th-career win versus Ohio State's Corey Morrison at 197 lbs. After a scoreless first period, Delguyd tallied an escape seven seconds into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Just moments later Delguyd took a 3-0 lead after he tallied a takedown at match's edge, but Morrison responded with an escape to make the score 3-1. Morrison cut Delguyd's lead to one by earning an escape with 1:15 left in the third, but Delguyd responded by slamming Morrison to the mat for a takedown, increasing his lead to 5-2. Delguyd rode Morrison for the remainder of the match and came away with a 6-2 victory due to 1:59 of riding time. In the final match of the day, Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) faced No. 20 Kirk Nail. Fox notched a double-leg takedown midway through the first period to take a 2-0 lead. 6. LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Taking four bouts from the No. 17 team in the nation gives the Lock Haven University wrestling squad (4-10, 0-1 EWL) reason for optimism at the beginning of Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action, a 21-12 loss to No. 17 Edinboro University (8-0, 2-0 EWL) tonight at Thomas Fieldhouse. "We got some great effort out there tonight, and I can't say anything but praise for our guys," said LHU head coach Rocky Bonomo. "We turned around some decisions from earlier this season, and I loved our hustle in these matches." Facing their seventh ranked team of the 2005-06 season, the Bald Eagles nearly stole a win from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Champion Fighting Scots. LHU got wins from sophomore Obenson Blanc (Naples, Fla./Lely) at 125, sophomore Brian Ellis (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) at 141, junior Seth Martin (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) at 157 and junior Carlos Ponce (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah Miami Lakes) at 174. The night started at 125, a rematch of Blanc's bout with No. 20 Ricky Deubel at the Southern Scuffle. On Dec. 30, Deubel got the better of Blanc to the tune of a 16-0 tech fall, but Blanc wasted no time turning the tables tonight. Heading into the second period up 2-1, No. 15 Blanc picked up the pace with a 4-2 period, eventually getting the 12-6 win, Blanc's third over ranked opponents this season. At 133, sophomore Casey Moore (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) drew a tough assignment in No. 1 Shawn Bunch. Bunch earned bonus points with a 12-4 major decision. Ellis put the Bald Eagles back up 4-3 with an 8-5 decision over PSAC runner-up Rick McLaughlin. The deciding period was the second, 5-1 in Ellis' favor. In another bout featuring two ranked grapplers, No. 8 Gregor Gillespie picked up more bonus points for the Scots with a 15-0 tech fall over No. 17 Joshua Medina (Las Vegas/Pima C.C.). No. 17 Martin evened the match at 9-9 with a 4-3 win over Matt Hill at 157, and did it in an exciting fashion. Up 2-1 entering the third period, Hill chose down, getting an escape in the first 25 seconds. Hill, with a 3-1 lead, didn't bring the fight to Martin, and gave up a stalling point with 24 seconds left to make it 3-2. Martin made a late shot near the edge of the circle that failed, but skirted around Hill and grabbed control for a takedown with one second on the clock for a dramatic 4-3 win. At 165, freshman Jacob Lauffenburger (Russell, Pa./Warren) met the Scots' Deonte Penn. Fresh off a PSAC title in which he pinned all three of his opponents, Penn had all he could handle with Lauffenburger, nearly getting pinned on a pair of occasions in the first period. Lauffenburger ended the first period up 6-4, but Penn rallied for the 7-6 win on a riding time point. The Bald Eagle 174-pounder Ponce got his revenge on Eric Ring for a 4-2 defeat last week, taking down Ring in the last 17 seconds for a 4-2 win of his own. The win brought the match to a 12-12 tie, but EUP would get the final three matches for the win. Junior Derrick Morgan (Media, Pa./Athens) battled No. 17 Alex Clemsen for the first time this season, dropping a 6-1 bout. At 197, junior Michael Metzger (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) moved up a class to face Edinboro's Joe Fendone, a 10-6 loss to the PSAC Champion. Senior heavyweight Tim Meyers (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) dropped a 7-2 decision to Jeremy Mosely for the 21-12 final. Bonomo, Blanc, Ellis, Martin, Ponce, Moore, Medina, Lauffenburger, Morgan, Metzger, Meyers and the rest of the Bald Eagles are back in action tomorrow, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m. when they host Cleveland State University (5-4, 1-0 EWL).

  8. EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Senior captain Darren McKnight wrestled an inspired match against ninth-ranked Doug Withstandley at 149 pounds as the Michigan State wrestling team (3-5, 1-2 Big Ten) dropped Purdue, 22-11, for its first Big Ten win of the season Friday night, Feb. 3 at Jenison Field House. "We wrestled a terrific dual as a team tonight, which is what we have been looking for all season," head coach Tom Minkel said. "Everyone wrestled hard, and we had some guys step up big at a few weight classes. Darren's match was really the marquee one of the dual. It was as good of a college match as I have seen in a while." The Spartans stole the early momentum, with junior Tony Greathouse taking the 157-pound match to start the dual. Greathouse gave up an early takedown, but took Jake Murphy down in the closing seconds of the first period, in addition to holding him down the entire third period, to claim a 4-2 decision. Greathouse now stands at 13-9 on the season and evens his dual-meet record to 4-4. One of the top bouts of the night came at 165 pounds where MSU's Greg Goidosik won a thrilling match, 5-3, in the second sudden-victory period against Dan Bedoy. Tied at two after seven minutes, neither wrestler scored in the first overtime session and they exchanged escapes in the round of tiebreakers, which puts both wrestler in the down position. Goidosik countered a Bedoy shot in the closing seconds of the second overtime to pick up his 11th victory of the season. R.J. Boudro picked up his 20th victory of the season at 174 pounds, defeating Purdue's Barry Jackson by major decision, 13-4. Boudro took a 6-1 lead into the third period, where he tallied three takedowns and a riding-time point to extend Michigan State's lead to 10-0. The win surpassed the Richmond, Mich., native's total from last season, setting a new career high in victories. Purdue's Ben Wissel showed why he is ranked third in the nation at 184 pounds, defeating MSU red-shirt freshman John Murphy by major decision, 15-5. Wissel tallied six takedowns and a reverse in the victory. The second overtime match of the night went Purdue's way, as No. 20 Nathan Moore claimed the sudden-victory decision against senior Jeff Clemens, 3-1. Clemens took his chances on a quick ankle pick to start overtime, but was countered, leading to a Moore takedown. Senior Max Lossen put the Spartans back on the board at 285 pounds, scoring his 11th victory of the season, 5-3, against Aaron Keough. A stalling point was awarded to Keough late in the third to tie the match at three, but Lossen scored the match-clinching takedown in the closing seconds to even his dual-meet record to 4-4. Junior All-American Nick Simmons remained undefeated on the season for the Green and White, as he defeated Brandon Tucker, 8-4, for his 23rd win of the season at 125 pounds. Simmons fell behind 2-0 on a high-risk move early, but scored the next five points and added a reversal late in the second for the win. No. 6 Chris Fleeger put Purdue back on the board, defeating MSU's Jeff Wimberley by major decision, 16-3, at 133 pounds. The two-time All-American outscored Wimberley, 10-1, in the opening period and held on to narrow the Michigan State lead to five at 16-11. No. 5 Andy Simmons secured the Spartans their first Big Ten win of the season, defeating Jake Patacsil at 141 pounds, 4-2. Simmons scored takedowns in the first and third periods to claim his team-leading 24th win of the season. The Williamston, Mich., native is now 7-1 in dual meets. Withstandley and McKnight, ranked 15th, rounded out the evening in the most highly anticipated match of dual, with the MSU 149-pounder coming out on top, 13-6. McKnight came out firing on all cylinders, taking the Purdue senior down three times in the opening period, and sealing the deal with a takedown and two near-fall points in the closing minute. The win broke a four-match losing streak against ranked wrestlers for McKnight, and improved his record to 18-9 on the 2005-06 campaign. The Spartans return to action Sunday, Feb. 5 when they take on the seventh-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes at Jenison Field House. 9. State College, Pa. –– The No. 9 Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team, under the guidance of head coach Troy Sunderland, grabbed an impressive 21-12 win at No. 7 Iowa in a key Big Ten wrestling dual. The Nittany Lions won six of ten bouts, including a key pin from sophomore Tim Haas (Camp Hill, Pa.) at 125, to stay perfect on the road this season. The dual began at 157, where Nittany Lion Nathan Galloway (State College, Pa.) met up with Iowa's Joe Johnston in a battle of ranked grapplers. Galloway entered ranked No. 14 while Johnston entered ranked No. 7. The first period was scoreless for the first minute and a half before Galloway scored the first takedown. The Penn State junior turned the favored Hawkeye quickly after a stoppage and added three back points to take a 5-0 lead and rode Johnston out for the remainder of the period to carry a 5-0 lead and a 1:33 riding time edge into the second period. Galloway chose down to begin the second and was cut loose by Johnston. Galloway, up 6-0, turned a quick Johnston shot into two points of his own and silenced the Iowa crowd with an 8-1 lead with a minute left in the second. Johnston scored his first take down with :30 left in the second and would begin an amazing comeback, cutting the lead to 9-3 after a Galloway escape. Galloway got hit with two stalls in the period but still led 9-4 entering the third. The Nittany Lion junior received injury time before the third period started as he was hit with cramps in his legs. Johnston took Galloway down to begin the third and forced Galloway into another stall and within seconds, cutting the lead to 9-8. Johnston took a 10-9 lead with another quick take down and added three back points to take a 13-10 lead with :30 left. Neither grappler would score again. The 13-10 come-from-behind win gave Iowa an early 3-0 lead. Galloway fell to 10-9 on the year while Johnston improved to 17-5. At 165, Nittany Lion freshman David Erwin (Urbana, Ohio), ranked No. 12, battled Iowa's Eric Luedke. A furious start with both wrestlers having a chance to score early resulted in an Erwin takedown and a 2-0 lead. Erwin cut Luedke loose and held a 2-1 lead, which is how the second would end. The Nittany Lion freshman took down to begin the second. Luedke rode Erwin for the bulk of the second period, picking up a stall warning in the process. Down 2-1, Luedke chose down to begin the third and quickly escaped to tie the score at 2-2. Erwin would counter a Luedke shot to take a 4-2 lead. After a Luedke escape, Erwin would fight off a last second Iowa scoring attempt to secure a 4-3 win and tie the team score at 3-3. Erwin moved to 20-5 with the win while Luedke fell to 13-10 Nittany Lion junior James Yonushonis (Philipsburg, Pa.) battled Iowa's Ben Stedman at 174. Yonushonis, ranked No. 11, could not score on the Hawkeye reserve (Iowa's No. 7 Mark Perry was out with an injury) in the first period. The Nittany Lion took down to begin the second and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead and got the bout's first takedown with 1:10 left in the second. Stedman escaped in good time to cut Yonushonis' lead to 3-1 with :50 left. With just :05 left, Stedman tied the score with a late take down, sending the bout to the third knotted at 3-3. Stedman escaped to begin the third period and took an unlikely 4-3 win. But Yonushonis would quickly get a take down to tie the score at 5-5 after a Stedman escape. With :35 left, Yonushonis took a 7-5 lead with a solid take down and began to work Stedman from the top position, holding onto his lead while not allowing Steadman out. The Philipsburg native held on for a 7-5 win and gave Penn State a 6-3 lead. Yonushonis improved to 15-4 with the win while Stedman fell to 8-10. Top-ranked 184-pounder Eric Bradley (Plaistow, N.H.) met No. 7 Paul Bradley in another battle of the nation's best. The first period began with each wrestler working hard on each others arms, with the only work for the scorekeeper being a stall warning on each wrestler. In a match-up of top ten wrestlers, the first three minutes were scoreless. Eric chose down to begin the second period and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead. Paul got in on a single leg but Eric quickly crawled back, circled in on the right side, and turned it into a take down of his own. Leading 3-0, the Nittany Lion All-American rode the Hawkeye for the remainder of the second period and carried that lead into the final period. Paul took down to begin the third period and, already facing a :50 riding time deficit, needed to get out early. Eric was hit with a second stall warning, cutting his lead to 3-1 and Paul escaped to a 3-2 deficit. Eric, however, maintained a 1:01 riding time edge. The Penn Stater began to dictate the action as the third period progressed, driving in and forcing Paul off the mat. Paul took one final shot but Penn State's top-ranked Bradley would hold on to a 4-2 win (adding the riding time point). Bradley's win increased Penn State's lead to 9-3 and kept the Penn State senior undefeated at 6-0. Iowa's Paul Bradley fell to 7-4. Sophomore Phil Davis (Harrisburg, Pa.), ranked No. 6 at 197 for Penn State, took on Hawkeye freshman Dan Erekson in the next bout. The Penn State All-America took a 2-0 lead with 1:20 left in the first with a take down. Erekson escaped quickly to halve the lead. The remainder of the period was scoreless and Davis took a 2-1 lead into the second. Davis took down to begin the second. Erekson got hit with an early stall warning as Davis struggled to get loose from the bottom position. Davis reversed Erekson with :41 left in the second and took a 4-1 lead. The Harrisburg native rode Erekson out and carried the 4-1 lead into the third. Erekson chose neutral to begin the final period but Davis quickly took Erekson down to up his lead to 6-1. Keeping Erekson flat underneath, Davis worked for a turning combination up top managed to control Erekson for the remainder of the third period. Davis grabbed a 7-1 win and upped Penn State's lead to 12-3. Davis improved to 13-3 while Erekson fell to 13-8. At heavyweight Penn State's Joel Edwards (Upper Darby, Pa.), ranked No. 18, took on Iowa's Ryan Fuller. Fuller got the first takedown with a solid trip midway through the first, nearly putting Edwards to his back. Edwards escaped easily to cut the Fuller lead to 2-1 with 1:30 left. Edwards got hit with a stall warning as Fuller continued to work the under hook, trying to use his weight advantage up high. The first period ended with Fuller leading 2-1. Edwards deferred his choice in the second and Fuller chose neutral to begin the second. Fuller quickly upped his lead to 4-1 with another take down as the second period began with Edwards escaping to eat into that lead a bit. Edwards had each of his offensive thrusts countered by Fuller and could not score in the second. Trailing 4-2 entering the third, Edwards chose down. Edwards escaped quickly to cut the lead to 4-3 and began forcing the offense. Edwards got hit with another stall and fell behind by one more, 5-3. He nearly scored on Fuller with 1:00 left but the Hawkeye forced a stalemate on the attempt with :43 left to wrestle. Fuller would counter an Edwards shot as time wound down to clinch the win and grab a 7-4 win. The upset victory cut Penn State's lead to 12-6 and dropped Edwards to 11-4. Fuller improved to 6-4 on the year. At the top of the line-up, Nittany Lion, Haas up for the upset at heavyweight with a blisteringly quick pin of Iowa's Lucas Magnani at 125. Haas scored a takedown with less than a minute gone and quickly turned the Hawkeye junior (getting the fall at 1:01) for the critical six team points. The win moved Haas to 14-6 and upped the Lion dual lead to 18-6. Magnani fell to 9-10. Penn State freshman Jake Strayer (South Fork, Pa.) put his No. 9 ranking on the line against Iowa freshman Daniel Dennis at 133, looking to win and secure the road dual victory. Stayer took an early lead with a quick take down and amassed a 1:04 riding time edge before Dennis escaped. Strayer continued to set the tempo, getting a fall and three near-fall points as the period wound down to carry a 7-1 lead into the second. Dennis chose down to begin the second, but Strayer would pressure the Hawkeye freshman and build up more than 2:00 riding time before allowing him to escape. Strayer, leading 7-2 with 2:28 riding time, began the third on the bottom. He quickly escaped to an 8-2 lead and began looking for a major decision. With the riding time point assured, Strayer got caught with a low ankle pick, taken down and nearly pinned in what would have been a stunning turnaround. Strayer fought off the pin but not before giving up a three-point near fall. The Nittany Lion freshman escaped and posted a dual clinching 10-7 win. The victory, which gave PSU a 21-6 lead, upped Strayer's mark to 16-2. Dennis fell to 13-11. In yet another battle of ranked men, Penn State senior DeWitt Driscoll (Connellsville, Pa.) met Iowa's Alex Tsirtsis at 141. Driscoll entered ranked No. 10 while Tsirtsis entered ranked No. 14. The Penn Stater got the first take down in the heated bout and nearly got back points in the process of working up more than a minute's worth of riding time. Tsirtsis would escape, but Driscoll would lead 2-1 heading into the second. The Nittany Lion senior chose down to begin the second and worked hard for a reversal but Tsirtsis fought off the strong Driscoll effort. Tsirtsis rode Driscoll for the entire second period, erasing a huge Driscoll riding time edge. Tsirtsis chose down to begin the final period and scored a big reversal to take a 3-2 lead. The Hawkeye added two near fall points to up his lead to 5-2 with a minute-plus riding time edge. Driscoll could not manage to get loose from underneath and Tsirtsis went on to post an impressive 6-2 upset win. The upset loss dropped Driscoll to 11-6 while Tsirtsis improved to 13-8. Penn State's lead was also cut to 21-9. The final dual of the night put Penn State senior James Woodall (Dupont, Pa.), ranked No. 11, up against No. 2 Ty Eustice of Iowa at 149. Eustice got the first period's only take down and carried a 2-1 lead into the second period. Woodall chose down to begin the second and quickly escaped to tie the score at 2-2. The Nittany Lion senior applied the offensive pressure during the second but could not find an opening against the Hawkeye senior. No scoring in the second meant the bout entered the final two minutes tied 2-2. Eustice chose down to begin the third and was allowed up by Woodall, grabbing a 3-2 lead. Eustice had a solid scoring attempt as the third period got underway and, after Woodall fought him off for a moment, turned it into a take down and a 5-2 lead. Woodall escaped, cutting into the lead, but could had his offensive charge turned into a Eustice take down with :25 left. The second-ranked Hawkeye rode Woodall out to post an impressive 7-3 win in the hard fought match. The loss dropped Woodall to 6-4 while Tsirtsis moved to 16-1. Still, the Nittany Lions posted the impressive 21-12 dual victory. Penn State improved to 10-3 with the victory, 2-3 in Big Ten action. Iowa fell to 9-5, 3-2. The win snapped a seven-dual losing streak to Iowa and was the first win against (or at) Iowa since a 25-17 win at Iowa on Jan. 3, 1998. Penn State is now 7-3 vs. ranked teams this season with four of those wins coming on the road. The Lions are 3-2 vs. the top ten as well. The Nittany Lions are now a perfect 5-0 on the road this year, four of those wins coming against top 25 teams. "I knew coming in we'd have to be ready to go the full seven minutes in each bout," Sunderland said. "I thought we came out in the early stages each time very well, but we didn't close out some match-ups today. Still, we're very happy to get out of Carver-Hawkeye Arena with a win. But we have to take some lessons from this on how hard we have to finish. We beat a good Iowa team tonight but we have room to improve and will need to get better to win at Iowa State on Sunday." Penn State will put its perfect road record on the line this Sunday with a dual at Iowa State. The Nittany Lions and Cyclones will tangle at 1 p.m. Eastern. After this weekend's swing through the state of Iowa, the Nittany Lions will visit Indiana next Saturday in a 7 p.m. bout in IU's Assembly Hall. 17. Columbia, Mo. -- Wrestling the final home dual of the season, the No. 14 Missouri wrestling program will face off against No. 10 Oklahoma Sunday, Feb.5, at 1 p.m. CST in the Hearnes Center. Four graduating Tigers will be recognized for their contributions to the Missouri program, including Jeff Foust, Chris McCormick, Austin DeVoe and Jed Lewis (Norfolk, Neb.). Missouri Head Coach Brian Smith owns two wins over the Sooners in the past three years, although the Tigers came up short last year, losing 18-14 in Norman, Okla. In 2003 and 2004 Missouri was victorious, beating their rivals from the South 25-20 and 21-15, respectively. Each team enters the dual 0-2 in the Big 12 Conference, with both squads dropping a dual to defending national champion No. 2 Oklahoma State. Austin DeVoe (125, Columbus, Kan.), Chris McCormick (141, Leawood, Kan.) and Jeff Foust (197, Blue Springs, Mo.) have been making an impact on Tiger wrestling since they entered the University of Missouri in the fall of 2001. Not a season has passed since that time that at least one of them has not been a member of the starting lineup. Each member of the trio faces a tough task Sunday, taking on former NCAA All-Americans in the final home starts of their careers. DeVoe, ranked 18th in the nation, will face off against No. 2 Sam Hazewinkel, a two-time third-place finisher at the NCAA Championships. DeVoe carries a 25-11 mark into the match and looks to be the first wrestler to upset the undefeated Hazewinkel this season. McCormick is matched up against No. 2 Teyon Ware, a two-time national champion at 141 pounds. Facing off against a competitor who took fourth place at the NCAA Championships one year ago, Foust will shake hands with No. 5 Joel Flaggert at 197 pounds. Ranked No. 1 in the nation at 174 pounds, Ben Askren (Hartland, Wis.) continues to cement his place in Tiger annals as one of the best grapplers ever to put on a Missouri singlet. Last week Askren pinned No. 3 Jacob Klein of Nebraska in 4:29 to pick up his 33rd straight victory, the longest active streak in the nation. The victory was also the 99th win of Askren's career, giving the junior a chance to reach the 100-win plateau against No. 12 Wes Roberts this Sunday. With a raised hand against Roberts, Askren will become the fastest Tiger to reach 100 wins and the only grappler to reach the mark in his third season as a starter. Rounding out the list of battles between ranked wrestlers, junior Matt Pell (165, Luxemburg, Wis.) and redshirt freshman Raymond Jordan (184, New Bern, N.C.) will both square off against top competitors. Ranked No. 5 in the nation, Pell faces a familiar opponent in No. 14 Jarrod King. The two competitors met in the championship bout of the Missouri Open Nov. 20, with Pell taking the match by injury default. The No. 15 competitor in the country at 184 pounds, Jordan steps into center circle against No. 13 Justin Dyer, a junior who qualified for the NCAA Championships a year ago. In the midst of a stellar opening season as a member of Missouri's starting lineup, Jordan has defeated six ranked opponents on his way to a 27-8 mark. The 1 p.m. CST dual against Oklahoma will also serve as Fan Appreciation Day, at which free tickets to Missouri sporting events and free hair cuts at Cost Cutters will be given out

  24. Stanford, Calif. -- Stanford (5-4, 2-1 Pac-10) will close out the home season this weekend with three matches in 24 hours, as the Cardinal takes on Oregon at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oregon State at 7 p.m. on Friday and wraps with Portland State at noon on Saturday. Stanford will honor its eight seniors (Ray Blake, Brennan Corbett, Ryan Hagen, Zack Hensley, Juston Johnson, Miguel Matta, Larry Ozowara and Brian Perry) on Saturday in a pre-meet ceremony. "Oregon has two returning Pac-10 champions in their lineup and also a few guys who are ranked highly in the conference this season," noted head coach Kerry McCoy. "It is an important match because we need to bounce back after last weekend and it is the first of our last three home matches. Next up, we have Oregon State, which is another important match. They have guys highly ranked in the conference as well as in the nation. It will be important for us to finish the day on a positive note. Our last home match of the year is against Portland State --and it's senior day, so it will be key to finish our homestand strong and also to recognize our seniors for all the hard work and dedication they put in during their years here." After a disappointing road trip to Davis last weekend, the Cardinal is looking to defend its home mat, which will be the site of the 2006 Pac-10 Championships later this month, Feb. 26-27. First up will be Oregon. The Ducks are 6-4, with a 4-3 record in the Pac-10, but they have won five of their last six matches, with Oregon's only loss being a 23-21 decision at Arizona State. The Cardinal will then match up against Oregon State. The Beavers have won four straight dual meets and seven of its last eight en route to a 10-2-1 overall mark, with 5-1 record in conference action. 25. The top-ranked Golden Gopher wrestling team will honor head coach J Robinson and senior All-American Matt Nagel this weekend at the Sports Pavilion. On Friday night when Minnesota takes on Wisconsin, the Golden Gophers will honor Robinson prior to the match for his 20 years as head coach. On Sunday afternoon against Indiana, the Golden Gophers will honor their lone senior. Hired by former Athletic Director Paul Giel prior to the 1986-87 season, Robinson replaced the legendary Wally Johnson who spent 34 years as head coach of the Golden Gophers. In his tenure, Robinson has led Minnesota to a pair of NCAA Championships and four Big Ten titles. This past summer, he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Nagel came to the University after a prep career, which saw him win a record five state titles at Frazee High School. Nagel redshirt his first year as Minnesota claimed its second straight national title in 2002. Four years later, he is now a senior captain on the nation's number-one ranked team. An All-American a year ago, Nagel is currently ranked ninth in the nation with a 23-6 record at 165 pounds. Minnesota will look to finish its home schedule unbeaten for the fifth time in Robinson's tenure. Friday's match against the Badgers will begin at 7 p.m., while Sunday's dual against the Hoosiers will begin at 2 p.m.
