Because world medalists at non-Olympic weights get a bye to the semi-finals of Olympic Trials, or at least they did for 2020(1).

Look at the contenders of both weights:

74 - Dake, Nolf

70 - Retherford, Pantaleo, Oliver, Deakin, Berger

I would also go the 70 KG route if I could and my goal was 2024 74 KG Olympics.

The same reason if I am the other Hidlay aiming for 86 KG - Go 92 KG this Freestyle season.  Moore, Jackson <<<<< Taylor, Valencia
