Arizona State - What’s going on?

ASU lost this evening to Cal Poly. Obviously not a great look, but it made me think about the long term outlook on the program. What in the world do they plan on doing at 133 and 174-197 over the next couple years? Valencia has been a disaster, and as of now they have no in house solutions after this year (Unless you think Chlebove is one). On top of that, outside of Nicco Ruiz (165) they have been silent when it comes to big name recruits. Is this the beginning of the end of ASU being a top 5ish team?

I keep watching expecting it to go down in flames but the more I watch it looks like perhaps all is going to be just fine.  🤔

Not a good month for ASU.  Very uninspiring. Figs gets the start in a conference dual - does that mean something? Norfleet and Schultz still out of the lineup. Truax also missing.

Not sure if him getting the start means much, but Ramos beating Barnett does. If I had to bet on the direction they’d go, I’d say Figueroa at this point.

They have Ysaguire at 133/141 red shirting this year. Still have Montalvo at 184. Cael looks terrible. Looks in terrible shape and uninterested. Have Schunke and Messenier at the upper weights red shirting. Larkin is also coming in next year in the middle weight mix. Guess he would red shirt.
The BIGGEST problem. Losing Pendleton. You can see now by what he is doing at OSU how much he meant to the team.

Pump the brakes on the Zeke hype train

Zeke is great for the program, great for AZ wrestling, great for Sunkist kids. Not sure he’s that great as a college head coach. The program looks to me like it has gotten casual, like during the Sean Charles years.

Ysaguirre looks like he may be too big for 133, and Montalvo looks like a shell of his OSU self. Schunke and Meissner are interesting, but aren’t guys that are expected to score big points, if any at NCAAs. Do you expect to see changes to the staff? I’ve liked the development I’ve scene from McGee, Parco, and to some extent Vasquez since bringing Molinaro on board. I think the bigger issue is bringing in difference makers at those upper middle weights.

I don’t foresee any coaching changes. Norfleet didn’t come in as a top recruit either. I think guys at upper weights have a shot to follow his trajectory. They were top 10 guys in their weight class coming out of HS. Chlebove has been wrestling very good. If guys move up a weight and Yas wrestles 141, I think Chlebove could surprise people at 133.

I am somewhat surprised that Chlebove has stuck with the program this long, but kudos to him that he might finally get his shot. Although Norfleet wasn't a top recruit, people were very high on him, especially since he had a good deal of success his first two years, being ranked fairly high and qualifying for the NCAA tourney. Most people thought he would be a top 5 guy by now.  They did get Schultz back into the lineup against Stanford and Negron only lost to Griffith 4-2... so I guess those are some positives.  On a separate note, guys who look like a shell of their old selves,  Abas has not looked good for a long time.

I too am surprised that he has stuck it out. There must be a temptation to get closer to home.

What about Zain Coleman? How is he doing?

Others are better at timelines than me but doesn’t Zeke sort of have a track record of quick success and then long term disaster? Brandon Slay gets credit for the RTC development and Zeke got credit for getting out of his way.

I think Zeke had moved on from Penn wrestling before the PRTC even began and long before Brandon Slay came to the PRTC.   They probably know eachother from USA wrestling though.  When I look at ASU, I think of it as successful.  They have a lot of real butt-kickers and are in the frigging Desert.  Arizona - not exactly a hot bed of wrestling.  Almost every program has room for improvement - even PSU has its critics.

They've gotten a team trophy the past two seasons. Very hard to say he is not a great college coach.
