NCAA Winter Convention Rules Changes

Idaho

Recommended Posts

NCAA Winter Convention is going on this week... started today. Not sure what was approved and not approved - @Husker_Du tweeted awhile ago about this.  Below are some articles about proposals and the transformation committee. I know one proposal was to eliminate maximum number of official visits for recruits. Some rules may be by division.

Thanks for sharing the 2nd article there.

The voting on NCAA rules changes for DII and DIII will be on Saturday morning, so that's when the season change stuff would be determined for DIII. DI uses a different process where it seems like the various committees make more of the decisions. Two DI changes worth noting from a wrestling standpoint

1. The DI Council voted to eliminate the voluntary coach designation across Division I, instead including those coaches within a new limit for countable coaches in each of the applicable sports. Wrestling will now have four allowable coaches (1 head + 3 assistants). https://www.ncaa.org/news/2023/1/11/media-center-division-i-council-modernizes-rules-for-coaching-limits.aspx

2. Tennis is doing a two year experiment where the individual championships happen in the fall and the team championship happens in the spring. It's the closest thing to a dual/individual championship situation some have angled for in the wrestling world. https://www.ncaa.org/news/2023/1/11/media-center-di-committee-approves-2-year-pilot-program-for-tennis-championships.aspx

From @Husker_Du

What I'm hearing though not confirmed... 1) Removal of minimum # of sports to be DI 2) No volunteer assistants but a fourth full-time coach 3) No partial scholarships (although it's unclear if this applies to wrestling, i fear it is b/c why clarify it; FB and BB already have it) twitter.com/SCC_wrestling/… - THIS WAS TABLED.

Any idea what the THIS in THIS WAS TABLED refers to?

Probably #3 ... the part about scholarships.... which is a huge issue when it comes to wrestling and the fact that programs use  partial scholarships almost exclusively.  The issue was tabled... for how long? I don't know.
