Starrocci is the returning champ and leader of the pack at this weight. Tier 1 includes Starrocci, Labriola & Lewis. Is Foca making a case to enter into tier 1? He was looking like someone who could push for a high podium spot last year before the concussions. This year he has beat everyone put in front of him not named Mekhi Lewis.

Tier 1 is Starocci.

Tier 2 is Labriola, Lewis, and Foca.

Starocci beat Labriola 6-1 last year.

I don’t think they are on the same level.

This.

It is perceivable to put Foca and Labs as Tier 3.  I know Labriola beat Lewis, but my view on tiers are as follows:

Aside for an injury, illness, or a (near) lucky deck, you can defeat those one above your tier, in your tier, and one below your tier.

Ergo...

1 - Starocci

2 - Lewis

3 - Labriola, Foca

4 - Plott, O'Malley, Smith, Romero

5 - Lautt, Mocco, Ruth, Brands

There are others, but this is about

FIFY. Plott lost 9-4 to Aaron Olmos (#39) fro Oregon St.

Foca gave Starocci a tough match. Not as tough as Mehki, but tougher than Labriola.

Starocci's ability to ride like glue puts him in a class by himself at 174.

Can you really put Starrocci in his own tier when he went to tie breakers with Mekhi last year and beat him on a riding time point this year? Starrocci is great and certainly the favorite but I am not going to give him his own tier based on those results.

Did you see the match?

Also did you see my disclaimer?  'injury, illness, or a (near) lucky deck' applies here.

Yes.  Lone wolf.

Agree to disagree. I think Spencer (I know he just got thrown to his back) is the only lone wolf tier guy this year.

Tier 1

125 - Spencer

133 - RBY, Fix, Vito (maybe)

141 - the top 15 guys

149 - Yianni, Gomez

157 - Robb, O'Connor, Andonian (could add more possibly)

165 - O'Toole, Griffith, Carr

174 - Starrocci, Lewis, Labriola, Foca (maybe)

184 - Brooks, Hidlay, Keck

197 - the top 12 guys

HWT - Kerk, Parris, Cass

I am comfortable with him at his own tier because he is 2 for 2 at NCAA's and on a 36 (37) match win streak that includes 1 (2) wins over Mekhi Lewis. Last year he beat the second, third, and seventh place finishers on the way to his title. (Nick Lee, Keegan O'Toole, Aaron Brook, and Gable Steveson also beat 3 ultimate AA's - everyone else beat 2). The year before as the 3 seed he beat the 2 seed and 1 seed.

Would a third win over Lewis be enough to put Starocci in his own tier?

I did ... mat side.... did not appear injured...Olmos did not get "lucky" for  a near deck or back points... good old fashion doubles. As for sick, who knows.

Olmos perplexes me. Was he injured or coming off injury/sickness for OSUw vs PSU?

He's had a very rough season in his personal life... his dad passing away being a big part of it. I t think he is finally settling in with wrestling right now. Great kid.  The funny thing about the Plot match, was that he had been sick for awhile and had only practiced a few days before the Ok State dual. He's definitely a kid you want to root for.

I think Plott tweaked his shoulder in the Mocco match and we are seeing a mental block on his part.  The mind game is the most difficult to win.

Yes. Plott was never close to scoring. His 4 points were all releases by Olmos. Olmos on the other hand scored 4 perfectly clean takedowns and could have easily had 2 more that he was in deep on. If there were no uniforms on these guys you would have said Plott was the #29 guy.

Labbs is definitely not tier 3. You could make an argument (I would) for tier 1 but he's at worst tier 2.

The guy beat Lewis, tier above him.  Absolutely conceivable.

You telling me a guy who lost to Smith at B1Gs last year, ThugMassa G twice, and Nachohouse - all should-be 165lbers should be Tier 1?

He had nothing for Starocci when they last met and placed 7th last year, and has one quality win this season in Lewis... a match that I would bet on going the other way next time.

He is Tier 3 with Foca.

Labbs is for sure not tier  3. AA every year. Beat Kemmer easily last year, has taken starocci to one of his toughest matches ever, beat lewis. Tier 1 or 2. Nor e

Two years ago.

Got pretty thoroughly dominated last year. By a guy with a broken hand.
