Why is a quorum not required for the presidential election?

Why are voters allowed to vote by mail for the presidency but not for the speaker?

What is the reasoning behind the difference in policies?

Presidential election is ceremonial and only useful for grandstanding rather than practical matters.   Additionally - members can only have meetings with donors, lobbyists and other revenue sources after they are sworn in, so that is job one.

The longer they wrangle on this, the less shenanigans go on.   Let them fight about who should be speaker = less damage they can do.   With the vast majority of votes (203 out of 218 needed) in his favor, is it reasonable to think McCarthy will eventually not be speaker?

I think McCarthy is toast.

What happens after that is wide open.

Despite a long evening and morning of negotiations with Republicans, McCarthy was unable to move a single vote in his favor. In fact, with Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN) voting “present,” McCarthy actually lost one vote.

It’s also worth noting that Trump’s endorsement of McCarthy had no effect on votes.

The GOP leadership is also unable to pass an adjournment resolution.

This has no apparent end.

I want to know the net worth of every house member and how it has grown since their time in office.  We can't have another Pelosi type.

I liked what Jim Jordan said yesterday but his net worth is an unnatural $20+ million.

Most, if not all, have their tax returns online. Histories should be available as well.

It is now painfully obvious electing leadership is a nontrivial congressional duty, rather than a ceremonial one.  How can they do it without being sworn in?

It's almost the only thing that they are allowed to do until the speaker is sworn in.

Oh But I think we can and I think we will.  This current House majority may only last 2 years.   Anything can happen, especially in DC.

I want a simple-to-access, centralized list, published on a government agency website, with annual updates.

People in hell want ice water!! 😂

Seriously, archiving these things should be a journalism project somewhere.

So I was looking at https://caknowledge.com/jim-jordan-net-worth and it said $21M, but the prices for cars do not match reality, about page indicates India, and it doesn't match the formal financial disclosure forms at https://disclosures-clerk.house.gov/PublicDisclosure/FinancialDisclosure.

This looks like a decent representation.

After a fifth round of voting, the House failed once again to elect a speaker.

The vote totals for the fifth round:

  • Hakeem Jeffries – 212
  • Kevin McCarthy – 201
  • Byron Donalds – 20
  • Other – 0
  • Present – 1

Once again, McCarthy was unable to move a single vote in his favor.
