Guys -- there are many very good candidates every year and the voting is often controversial, for sure. As the creator of the Dan Hodge Trophy, I am sometimes disappointed in the outcome too, but I understand there are different viewpoints. You may be interested to know that Dan Hodge was very supportive of Emmett Willson's selection when we discussed the candidates and he learned that Emmett had won Vegas, the Midlands and the All-Star Classic.  -- Mike Chapman

For NCAAs? Of course. Each conference had two coaches vote in a preseeding tally. Not as scientific as now but they did have one. And when I started working them in '87 it was my job to tally those votes and produce the data. So there was a committee in '87.

Yes. From the WIN article:

Hodge was a prolific pinner who never surrendered a takedown in his three collegiate seasons.
Hodge, who votes on the committee, wholeheartedly felt Willson should win the award.
“This just proves that the most dominant wrestler can come out of any division and that anyone is eligible to win the award,” he said.

One more aside for you.

In the 10 weight era it has happened only 6 times out of 66 tournaments (9.1%), but 4 of them happened in a 10 year period (40%): 1963, 1988, 2000, 2004, 2007, 2009. It also happened in 1932 when there were only 8 weights.

And the tournaments in the 10 weight era with the fewest teams taking the spoils were 1972 and 1997, when only 5 teams won the 10 titles.

Can't always easily see the subject of thread and that comment sounded like complaining about NCAA seeding but obviously not.
